ABSTRACT THIS PROJECT IS AN ENDEAVOR FOR PROPOSING A SOLUTION FOR ACCOMMODATION PROBLEMS OF ELDERLY CITIZENS. THE PROJECT AIMS TO IMPROVE THE HOUSING AND WELL-BEING OF ELDERLIES. THE ‘‘GROWING HOUSE’’ PROJECT INTRODUCES CONCEPTS AND WAYS TO USE COLLECTIVE SPACES FOR INCREASING INTERACTION, COLLABORATION AND QUALITY OF LIFE OF ITS INHABITANTS. THE COMBINATION USE OF THE NATURE, LIGHT AND MATERIALS MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO MERGE THE PRIVATE AND PUBLIC LIFE IN A SENSE THAT HABITANTS GET THE BEST OUT OF THE BOTH. MIXTURE OF PRIVATE AND PUBLIC PROGRAMMES WITHIN THE BUILDING ALLOWS ELDERLY WITH LIMITED MOBILITY TO EXPERIENCE THE RICHNESS OF SOCIAL URBAN LIFE. THE PROJECT GIVES A NEW LIFE TO AN OLD HISTORICAL BUILDING LOCATED IN AMSTERDAM CENTER THROUGH OUT USING NOVEL MATERIALS, SPATIAL CONCEPT AND OVERLAPPING THE PUBLIC, PRIVATE AND IN-BETWEEN SPACES. THE BUILDING CONSISTS OF COURTYARDS, GREENERIES, INTERNAL STREETS AND FLEXIBLE SPACES THAT CREATE A DIVERSE ENVIRONMENT FOR ITS RESIDENTS.

HOUSE FOR AGING TOGETHER THE IDEAS OF LIVING TOGETHER AND HELPING EACH OTHER ARE OLD AS A WORLD. TODAY’S SOCIETY BECOMES CENTERED ON INDIVIDUAL NEEDS AND PEOPLE ARE LESS AWARE OF THEIR SURROUNDINGS. THE HUMAN CONNECTION IS GRADUALLY DISAPPEARING. KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCES CAN’T BE SPREAD WITH THE LOST CONNECTIONS. IN ORDER TO CREATE A SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY LIFESTYLE CONNECTING PEOPLE OF LIKE-MINDED AND SHARED VALUES SOUNDS NECESSARY. THIS PROJECT TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THE ‘‘LIVING IN COMMUNITY’’ CONCEPT TO DEVELOP SOLUTION TO CONNECT VARIOUS GENERATIONS. THIS MAY PRESERVE THE KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCES AND TRADITIONS.

HOUSE FOR GROWING TOGETHER THE ‘‘GROWING HOUSE’’ IS A PLACE WHERE YOUNG AND OLD WITH SAME INTERESTS LIVE TOGETHER, HELP EACH OTHER, COMPLETE EACH OTHER, EXCHANGE IDEAS AND CONNECT THROUGH ART, NATURE AND ARCHITECTURE. IN ‘‘GROWING HOUSE’’ PEOPLE HAVE A CHANCE TO GROW AND AGE TOGETHER.

HOUSE OF SENSES USING DIFFERENT MATERIALS, LIGHTS AND SHAPES WOULD CREATE VARIOUS ATMOSPHERES, EVEN IN A VERY SAME LIVING SPACE. THE WISE COMBINATIONS OF THESE ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS HELP TO CREATE SPACES FOR COLLECTIVE ACTIVITIES WHILE PRIVACY IS CONSIDERED.

HOUSE OF CYCLES THE ‘‘GROWING HOUSE’’ NEVER DIES. USING INTELLIGENT MATERIALS, WHICH CAN BE RECYCLED, REUSED OR DEGRADED IN DIFFERENT CONDITIONS TRANSFORMS THE HOUSE EVERY DAY, EVERY SEASON AND EVERY YEAR. THE HOUSE CHANGES THE PEOPLE AS THE PEOPLE CHANGE THE HOUSE.



SOCIAL AWARENESS “THE OLD PEOPLE ARE SO OFTEN FORGOTTEN AND LEFT ALONE IN MODERN SOCIETY, THAT IT IS NECESSARY TO FORMULATE A SPECIAL PATTERN WHICH UNDERLINES THEIR NEEDS. OLD PEOPLE NEED OLD PEOPLE, BUT THEY ALSO NEED THE YOUNG, AND YOUNG PEOPLE NEED CONTACT WITH THE OLD.” - CHRISTOPHER ALEXANDER

OFTEN, THE CONTEMPORARY SOCIETIES ISOLATE SENIOR CITIZENS. EVERY DAY THE OLD AND YOUNG DISCONNECT MORE THEN BEFORE. ON ONE HAND, YOUNGS SEEK FOR OBTAINING KNOWLEDGE FROM THE OLDS, AND THE OLDS SEEK FOR INTERACTING WITH THE YOUNGS. THE ROOT OF THIS DISCONNECTION COMES FROM VARIOUS SOURCES. ONE OF THOSE IS TRADITIONAL ELDERLY HOUSES. USUALLY THEY ARE LARGE SCALE BUILDINGS FAR FROM URBAN LIFE. THESE LARGE FACILITIES WOULD REDUCE COMMUNICATIONS AMONG ELDERLIES AND THE REST OF THE SOCIETY, TAKES AWAY MOST OF THEIR INDEPENDENCE AND DECREASE QUALITY OF THEIR LIFES. A COMMUNITY HOUSE WHICH SATISFIES THEIR DAILY NEEDS WHILE OFFERS PARTIAL PRIVACY CAN BE A SOLUTION FOR IMPROVING ELDERLY WELL-BEING.



FUTURE OLD IS US LIVING AND STUDYING IN AMSTERDAM MADE ME NOTICE THE AGEING GENERATION PROBLEMS. HIGHLY INCREASING POPULATION OF ELDERLY PEOPLE IN AMSTERDAM, SOCIAL ISOLATION AMONGST ELDERLIES, CHANGING ECONOMY AND NOT ADEQUATE SUPPORTING HEALTH CARE SYSTEM MAKE THE FUTURE FOR OLD PEOPLE EVEN MORE INSECURE. GROWING IN COLLECTIVE ENVIRONMENT ENCOURAGED ME TO PROMOTE THE IDEA OF COMMUNITY LIVING. DURING MY YEARS LIVING ABROAD I NOTICED THAT PEOPLE IN MULTICULTURAL SOCIETIES FACING DIFFICULTIES TO KEEP AND DEVELOP RELATIONS AND CONNECTIONS. THE FUTURE ELDERLY IS US. THE WAY OUR GRANDPARENTS ARE AGING IS DIFFERENT FROM THE WAY OUR PARENTS WILL AGE AND OUR GENERATION IS GOING TO AGE EVEN MORE DIFFERENTLY. IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE, WE NEED TO START PREPARING AND CHANGING NOW. WE SHOULD RETHINK HOW WE WANT TO AGE?

LONELINESS CAN BE TWICE AS UNHEALTHY AS OBESITY, ACCORDING TO RESEARCHERS OF UK UNIVERSITY WHO FOUND THAT FEELINGS OF ISOLATION CAN HAVE A DEVASTATING IMPACT ON OLDER PEOPLE. THE SCIENTISTS TRACKED MORE THAN 2,000 PEOPLE AGED 50 AND OVER AND FOUND THAT THE LONELIEST WERE NEARLY TWICE AS LIKELY TO DIE DURING THE SIX-YEAR STUDY THAN THE LEAST LONELY. COMPARED WITH THE AVERAGE PERSON IN THE STUDY, THOSE WHO REPORTED BEING LONELY HAD A 14% GREATER RISK OF DYING. THE FIGURE MEANS THAT LONELINESS HAS AROUND TWICE THE IMPACT ON AN EARLY DEATH AS OBESITY.

BUT THAT’S PROBABLY NOT THE BEST IDEA.” “WE FIND PEOPLE WHO CONTINUE TO INTERACT WITH CO-WORKERS AFTER RETIREMENT AND HAVE FRIENDS CLOSE BY ARE LESS LONELY. TAKE TIME TO ENJOY YOURSELF AND SHARE GOOD TIMES WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS. A NEIGHBOUR BUILDING IS LOCATED VERY CLOSE TO ONE OF ITS SHORT SIDES, WHICH IS REACHABLE THROUGH A NARROW PATH. ANOTHER SHORT SIDE IS SURROUNDED BY A PARK.

BY KNOWING A LADY WHO LIVED ACROSS THE PARK I HAD A CHANCE TO KNOW ABOUT THE RICH HISTORY OF MY SELECTED LOCATION. I GOT INSPIRED BY FACINATING STORIES ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO LIVED AND WORKED IN THIS BUILDING DURING THE DIFFERENT PERIOD OF TIME.

EACH PRIVATE UNIT IS CONNECTED TO THE OUTDOOR SPACES WITH THE VIEWS NOT TO MAKE PEOPLE FEEL LOCKED AMONG THE WALLS. THE LAUNDRY ROOM, KITCHEN, DINING AND LIVING ROOM WILL MOVE TO COLLECTIVE/SHARING SPACES. PUBLIC SPACE IS A KEY TO THE HEALTH OF A COMMUNITY. ACCESS TO PUBLIC SPACE PROVIDES THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE AROUND OTHER PEOPLE. THE VALUE OF PUBLIC SPACES TO INDIVIDUALS AND THE COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE IS UNDENIABLE. COMPLEMENTING PUBLIC SPACE IS THE PRIVATE SPACE. HISTORICALLY PRIVATE SPACE HAS BEEN CONSIDERED AS SMALL AS A BED OR AS LARGE AS A CASTLE. PRIVATE SPACE OF YOUR PERSONAL BEDROOM IS QUITE DIFFERENT THAN THE PRIVATE SPACE OF AN OPEN PLAN OFFICE. MATERIALS OLD VS. NEW WORK WITH EXISTING MATERIALS IN LOCATION AND BRING IN NEW INTELLIGENT MATERIALSS WHICH SUPPORT THE ECOSYSTEM.



MYCELIUM MYCELIUM IS THE VEGETATIVE PART OF A FUNGUS, CONSISTING OF A MASS OF BRANCHING, THREAD-LIKE HYPHAE. IT IS SAID THAT THE MUSHROOM, AND ESPECIALLY MYCELIUM HAS THE POTENTIAL TO REPLACE ALL SORTS OF HARMFUL MATERIALS LIKE PLASTICS AND BATTERIES. IT IS A ’NEW’ BIO-MATERIAL AND HAS A POSSIBILITY TO BECOME A THERMO MATERIAL. IF BACKED IN 150 DEGREES THIS MATERIAL BECOMES FIREPROOF AND CAN BE USED FOR THE BUILDING INSULATION. AS WELL, IT CAN BE AS A BRICK OR ANY OTHER DESIGN MATERIAL. IT IS 100% COMPOSTABLE IN A BACKYARDS. ONCE THE BRICK DRIES IT BECOMES SUPER HARD AND SURPRISINGLY LIGHTWEIGHT, WATER AND FIRE RESISTANT.



MYCELIUM IN USE THIS NEW MATERIAL WILL BE USED IN THIS BUILDING AS A WALL INSULATION, TO BUILD ELEMENTS SUCH AS TEMPORARY WALLS, STORAGES, STAIRCASES AND SOME OF THE FURNITURES. PROCESS: 1-ELDERLY USE ORGANIC WASTE FROM THEIR OWN, NEIGHBORHOOD AND FROM ARTIS ZOO 2-PASTEURIZE AND ADD MYCELIUM TO THE WASTE 3-BAG IT IN A SHAPE 4-KEEP IT FOR 1-5 DAYS, DEPENDING ON SIZE (EG. BRICK SIZE SAMPLE TAKES ABOUT 5 DAYS TO DRY) 5- REMOVE FROM THE MOLD 6-DRIE IT TO STOP GROWTH AND PREVENT IT FROM PRODUCING MUSHROOMS OR SPORES 7-DECOMPOSE IT IN GARDEN

WATER A PART OF A NATURAL CYCLE THE ORIGINAL SHOWERS (WATERFALLS) WERE NEITHER INDOOR STRUCTURES NOR MAN-MADE, BUT THEY WERE COMMON NATURAL FORMATIONS.[THE FALLING WATER RINSED THE BATHERS COMPLETELY CLEAN AND WAS MORE EFFICIENT THAN BATHING IN A TRADITIONAL BASIN, WHICH REQUIRED MANUAL TRANSPORT OF BOTH FRESH AND WASTE WATER. ANCIENT PEOPLE BEGAN TO REPRODUCE THESE NATURAL PHENOMENA BY POURING JUGS OF WATER, OFTEN VERY COLD, OVER THEMSELVES AFTER WASHING.



SHOWERING A MOMENT OF PRIVACY BATHING IS THE WASHING OF THE BODY WITH A FLUID, USUALLY WATER OR AN AQUEOUS SOLUTION, OR THE IMMERSION OF THE BODY IN WATER. FOR EXAMPLE, A RITUAL RELIGIOUS BATH IS SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS IMMERSION, THE USE OF WATER FOR THERAPEUTIC PURPOSES CAN BE CALLED A WATER TREATMENT OR HYDROTHERAPY, BATHING IN THIS BUILDING IS THE MOST PRIVATE AND CUSTOM SPACE. IT IS RITUAL SPACE WITH THE HIGH CEILING AND A ROOF LIGHT COMING THROUGH. EACH BATHROOM IN THE HOUSE HAS A NATURAL DAYLIGHT SOURCE.

THE BUILDING IS COLLECTING RAIN WATER AND REUSING IT FOR GARDENS, GREEN HOUSE PLANTS AND TOILETS. IT USES SOLAR ENERGY FOR LIGHTING AND WATER HEATING. IT COVERS THE ROOF WITH GREENS TO COMPENSATE FOR THE LAND USED FOR THE BUILDING.

ART THE ‘‘GROWING HOUSE’’ USES ART AS A TOOL TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO EXCHANGE KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM. THE ART CORRIDORS ARE INTRODUCED TO THE BUILDING AS A SEMI PUBLIC SPACE. THE OUTDOOR ROUTES ARE ACCESSIBLE FOR VISITORS AND GUESTS ALL THE TIME. HOWEVER, THE INDOOR ROUTE IS WITH LIMITED ACCESSIBILITY DURING THE YEAR.

IT LINKED PLANTAGE WITH THE LEIDSEPLEIN. 1-WOODEN STABLE AOM 1874-1878 THE LONG, MOSTLY WOODEN BARN WITH BRICK SIDE WALL IS ON PLANTATION MUIDERGRACHT. 2-STONES STABLE AOM 187 7 3-ARTISTS ATELIERS ‘‘PLANTATION MUIDERGRACHT 105” TO 107 ARE SOME OF THE FEW PLACES IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD THAT RECALLS PLANTAGE ATMOSPHERE. HERE SEVERAL SCULPTORS HAD THEIR WORKSHOPS SUCH AS HILDO KROP, JAAP KAAS, KAREL KNEULMAN, ANDRÉ SCHALLER AND MIEKE KLEINENDORST.


BLOCK ACCESS 1 WAS THE FIRST ENTRANCE TO BUILDING ‘‘A’’. ACCESS 2 IS ENTRANCE FOR BUILDING ‘‘B’’. IT USED TO BE FOR BUILDING ‘‘A’’ AS WELL. ACCESS 3 IS EXISTING PRIVATE ENTRANCE TO THE INNER COURTYARD OF BLOCK. FROM THERE BUILDINGS ‘‘A’’ AND ‘‘B’’ COULD BE ACCESSED AS WELL. THIS IS ONLY GATE THROUGH WHICH CARS CAN COME INSIDE THE BLOCK. ACCESS 4 IS THE ENTRANCE TO COURTYARD AND TO THE BUILDING ‘‘A’’ DURING WORKING HOURS THROUGH THE OFFICE AND MUSEUM BUILDINGS. CONSIDERING THE LIMITED MOBILITY OF ELDERLIES AND AIM TO CREATE MORE INTERACTION BETWEEN INHABITANTS OF THE BLOCK ENTRANCES 1,2 AND 4 WILL BE KEPT OPEN.

BLOCK ALL THE BUILDINGS HAVE ENTRANCES FROM OUTSIDE THE BLOCK EXCEPT WOODEN AND STONE STABLE. THEY ARE ACCESSIBLE FROM INSIDE THE BLOCK. FROM ALL THE BUILDING JUST FEW OF THEM HAVE ACCESS TO THE INNER COURTYARDS. TO STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY ACCESS FROM BUILDING TO INNER COURTYARD FOR ALL THE BUILDINGS HAS BEEN CREATED.

EACH ROUTE IS CREATED TO CONNECT PRIVATE, ART AND WORK FUNCTIONS. THE ROUTES ARE OVERLAPPING AND PROMOTING INTERACTION AMONG DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS IN VARIOUS PLACES. THEREFORE, THE TOOLS MENTIONED BEFORE WILL BE USED TO STRENGTHEN AND CONNECT DIFFERENT PARTS OF ROUTINGS, SO THE INTERACTION AMONG INHABITANTS AND VISITORS WOULD BE STIMULATED.
