emaining positive can be difficult when there’s so much doom and gloom in the media. But if there’s one thing fashion indies are remarkably good at, it’s providing customers with respite from the everyday stress of life. One indie that’s creating a safe haven for shoppers is Stick and Ribbon, which has just moved into new premises in one of Nottingham’s prime city centre locations. For owner Sally Longden, who runs the store with her 23-year-old daughter Ellie Philpott, it marks an exciting new era for the business. Inside she aims to offer shoppers an uplifting experience whether they’re buying a £300 dress or £25 tee. And with the likes of Flannels, Hugo Boss and Paul Smith’s flagship in the local vicinity, the move is already proving to be a hit with the area’s droves of fashion fans. Turn to page 69 for the full interview. The promise of sunshine, Jubilee parties and summer events have also provided an extra boost to fashion sales. Data released by the Office for National Statistics reveals that shoppers bought more clothes in April compared to March, despite the cost-of-living crisis. With this in mind, this issue is full of new ideas to make the most of the season. We pick out some modern occasionwear pieces on page 28 to inspire your special event edit. Plus, we highlight

There are six categories up for grabs for independent retailers, including Womenswear Independent of the Year and Social Media Strategy of the Year. There are so many advantages to being shortlisted and entering is completely free. We outline 10 top reasons to take part in this year’s competition on page 44 and also share some top tips to help you create a winning entry on page 46. t’s been a turbulent couple of years for the industry. But while the pandemic has been a testing time for many, it has also allowed brands and retailers to reinvent their businesses and come out the other side stronger than ever. Today’s fashion businesses need to stand out from the competition. And one way of setting your business apart is being shortlisted – and possibly winning – a prestigious industry award. Launched in 2019, the Boutique Star Awards is back this year after a two-year hiatus. It’s the industry’s most exciting competition - created by the only trade publication in the UK dedicated to independent fashion and lifestyle retailers. Entering will give you the chance to be recognised at national level as an industry leader. Those making the shortlist will see their business profile raised among peers and suppliers. Meanwhile, winners will receive a gold star trophy alongside a winner’s email signature logo and website banner in honour of their excellence.

This year there are 16 categories for boutiques and suppliers to enter from Womenswear Independent of the Year and Independent Group of the Year to British Brand of the Year and Occasionwear Brand of the Year. Here are 10 reasons to submit an entry for a chance to win a trophy…

1. Set yourself apart

Winning an award is always good for business. And winning a Boutique Star Award means suppliers, customers and your team will know you’re officially the best in the industry (if you didn’t know that already). Plus, it will add extra kudos to your brand, service and product offering among potential customers too.

2. Free marketing

There isn’t a lot that comes for free these days. However, being able to call yourself an award-winning boutique or brand is probably the best marketing tool that money can’t

Stick and Ribbon moves to prime city centre location Nottingham womenswear independent Stick and Ribbon has moved its popular bricksand-mortar boutique to a new prime city centre location. Now situated on the recently revived Bridlesmith Gate, the 12-year-old retailer sits alongside high-end fashion stores such as Flannels and Hugo Boss as well as fellow indies 18 Montrose and Keishi Jewellery. Owner Sally Longden, who runs the business with 23-yearold daughter Ellie Philpott, says the location boasts high footfall, which is helping to raise brand awareness: “We already have a strong customer base, but we’ve always been hidden away from the busiest areas. It’s been really exciting to see so many people walking past and coming into the shop. We’ve only been open for a few days, but sales have been really strong. I’d say around 90 per cent of shoppers on our first Saturday were new customers, which is

brilliant. We’re really excited to be part of the regeneration of Bridlesmith Gate.” Stick and Ribbon has been promoting the new store launch on social media and recently held two VIP shopping events for its most loyal customers. The opening has also garnered attention from local press, with articles appearing in the Nottingham Post and new local indie magazine project Everyday INC. Read our exclusive interview with founder Sally Longden starting on page 69.

Former Liberty boss Ed Burstell to headline Pure London’s content programme Pure London is set to return to Olympia this summer and visitors will be able to hear retail leadership insight from two industry legends. Organiser the Hyve Group has announced former Liberty boss Ed Burstell and Kara MD Alan O’Neill will headline the show’s “editoriallyled content programme,” which will also be delivered across its digital channels. Under its new ‘Empowering Change’ theme, it says the line-up will be full of insight, newness and trends to help retailers 12 | boutique. | JUNE 2022

see change in its most positive form. Burstell will take to the stage to discuss fashion expansion, growth and bounce back drawing on his near-decade experience at Liberty, which saw double-digit year-onyear growth driven by a renewed focus on young British designers. Meanwhile, O’Neill will share his experience supporting iconic brands such as Selfridges, Fenwick, Primark, Ann Summers and Harrods in growing their physical store sales.

Clothing sales strong in April, reveals latest ONS data Shoppers bought more clothes in April than the month before, with sales volumes rising by 1.3 per cent. Fashion had a strong month, particularly online, as consumers began preparing for summer holidays and special events. The Office of National Statistics (ONS) reports a 1.4 per cent rise in retail sales in April overall, but said the jump was largely driven by supermarket sales. Food store sales volumes rose by 2.8 per cent last month, with alcohol and tobacco sales notably increasing. However, in the three months to April 2022, retail sales volumes fell by 0.3 per cent when compared with the previous three months – continuing the downward trend since summer 2021. Clothing now has one of the biggest proportions of sales taking place online compared to other sectors, with 26.2 per cent of transactions made via e-commerce in April. Online sales overall rose from 25.9 per cent in March to 27 per cent in April – remaining substantially higher than its prepandemic level of 19.9 per cent.

British papermaker turns pre-loved jeans into luxury retail packaging Sustainable papermaker James Cropper is giving old jeans a new life by transforming pre-loved denim into luxury retail packaging. The Lake District-based firm, which supplies high-end brands including Selfridges and Burberry, says denim has never been used before in modern papermaking – marking a significant step forward for the circular economy. Its new Rydal Apparel paper is made from 20 per cent postconsumer denim fibre and 80 per cent recycled fibre from sources such as used coffee cups. This not only makes the paper 100 per cent recycled, but also globally recyclable. Its new range includes 350gsm and 220gsm paper in Denim White, which can be used for small boxes, garment tags, gift cards and retail carrier bags.

Cotton is the purest form of natural cellulose, and is a renewable resource often used for its archival qualities in papermaking. “Cotton fibres are strong yet soft and make beautiful paper. Although modern papermaking relies heavily on pulps made from wood fibre, we are reviving the use of cotton rag in our portfolio as part of our ongoing commitment to fibre innovation and creating value from waste.”

DJV Boutique celebrates 10-year anniversary Ipswich womenswear independent DJV Boutique is celebrating its tenth birthday this month with a series of in-store celebrations and sales promotions. To mark its decade in business, the store is offering a 10 per cent celebratory discount on all products while shoppers are invited to enter a prize draw. DJV Boutique first opened in 2012 after founder Mandy Errington spotted a gap in the market for an alternative to high street fashion multiples. The first store was located on the outskirts of Ipswich before it moved to larger premises in the town centre in 2018. 14 | boutique. | JUNE 2022

The indie’s core brand is French Connection, while Errington also selects unique pieces from her favourite short order suppliers to create an individual edit. The owner says the business has faced several challenges over the last decade but has remained agile. “We’ve adapted to a lot of change over the years and have overcome many challenges,” she says. “The competition seems greater now somehow as you need to work very hard to meet the demands of customers and ensure you respond to their requirements in the right way. Fortunately, we’re considered a shop of choice as people

Our resilience has been essential and will hopefully encourage success for many more years to come.”

Autumn newness

TAKE IT SLOW THIS AUTUMN WITH BY BASICS’ TIMELESS WARDROBE ESSENTIALS

T

he ethos behind Danish brand by basics is slow fashion. So moving into a new season is all about encouraging customers to re-use their favourite pieces while updating their wardrobes with a few new tones and styles. Ready for when the weather turns cooler, by basics is placing a strong focus on its blusbar range, which offers everyday basics crafted in mulesing-free merino wool. Its designers have created 12 new styles so buyers can now choose from more than 100 different pieces. And, like always, the new designs are not just added for one season they’re in the range for good. With by basics there are no seasons or ever-changing collections. The brand adds relevant new pieces twice a year and trims its range simultaneously to ensure it contains the exact styles and colours buyers need. It's one collection in a world of colours and slow fashion at its best. Commenting on the new styles, by basics CDO Anne Dorte Thøger explains: “We are currently experiencing crises which we have no influence over - and we must accept that the world has changed and will change. The disruption has been going on long enough for some of our new ways of living to become habits. In fashion, we see nostalgia in many guises. Elements from the past are reviewed and used to create a new image - an image that reflects our desire to navigate into a better future.”

MEET BY BASICS This July, by basics will present its latest styles at Scoop in London. Find the brand at the show’s Danish section to feel the quality of its garments and hear more about its 360-approach to ethical fashion.

INSIGHT FOR FASHION INDIES BOUTIQUE STAR AWARDS 2019

Celebrating indies

T

he Boutique Star Awards are back for 2022. We delve into why you should enter your business (and reveal some top tips on standing out if you decide it’s the year for you)… JUNE 2022 | boutique. | 43

DOWN TO BUSINESS

10 reasons to enter the Boutique Star Awards FROM SETTING YOUR BUSINESS APART TO BOOSTING TEAM MORALE, HERE’S WHY YOU SHOULD ENTER THE INDUSTRY’S MOST EXCITING COMPETITION

I

t’s been a turbulent couple of years for the industry. 44 | boutique. | JUNE 2022

DOWN TO BUSINESS

BOUTIQUE STAR AWARDS 2022 RETAILERS Womenswear Independent of the Year Independent Group of the Year Creative VM Independent of the Year Social Media Channel of the Year NEW: New Independent of the Year NEW: Sustainable Independent of the Year SUPPLIERS British Brand of the Year International Brand of the Year Fashion Agency of the Year Fashion Distributor of the Year NEW: Black-Owned Brand of the Year NEW: Accessories/ Footwear Brand of the Year NEW: Sustainable Brand of the Year SPECIAL AWARDS Newcomer Lifetime Achievement buy. Those that make the shortlist receive free logos and marketing content to use on websites, adverts and social media channels while the winner of every category also receives a beautiful glass trophy for their cabinet.

3. Increased credibility

You’re undoubtedly very well-known and respected in your local area. But gaining a place on the shortlist will also put your boutique on the map among industry insiders and suppliers. So, if you want to bag an exclusive brand, entering a national competition is a great way to boost your credibility.

4. Boost sales and loyalty

The prestige and free marketing that comes with being shortlisted for an award can attract new customers and build loyalty. Not only will it help raise brand awareness but being selected for the shortlist – or ultimately winning – will cement your position as a truly outstanding business.

5. Only indies can enter

The Boutique Star Awards are only open to independent businesses – meaning you won’t be competing with huge corporations with colossal budgets to get shortlisted or win a trophy.

6. It’s free

You don’t have to pay to enter the Boutique Star Awards. Retailers and suppliers can enter as many categories as they are eligible for and won’t have to pay a penny (although if you are shortlisted, you may want to attend the ticketed winners’ party – more on that later).

7. The awards are credible

All entries are scrutinised by an independent judging panel made up of industry insiders who are passionate about indies and want to reward the most deserving businesses. Entries will be judged fairly and impartially, meaning any retailer and brand has a chance of winning an award.

8. Entering is good for team morale

Industry awards are a great way to recognise and celebrate the fantastic work of your team. Submitting an entry will show your employees how much you truly value and respect their hard work. And if you’re selected for the shortlist, the excitement (and prospect of accepting the trophy at the winners’ party) can provide a real morale boost. It’s also a great way to stand out as a leading employer when attracting fresh talent for your team.

9. We all need an excuse to celebrate

This year’s Boutique Star Awards winners’ party will take place on Tuesday 8 November at the May Fair Hotel in London. Everyone is invited and we can guarantee fizz, delicious food, good company and an after-ceremony dance party (more details to follow soon).

10. Networking opportunities

Of course, the winners’ party is much more than a good old knees-up – it’s also a great place to find inspiration and network with other like-minded business owners. So, what are you waiting for? Enter now at boutique-magazine.co.uk/submit-an-entry JUNE 2022 | boutique. | 45

DOWN TO BUSINESS

Winning moves

IF YOU WANT TO WIN A BOUTIQUE STAR AWARD, YOU’LL NEED TO CREATE AN OUTSTANDING ENTRY. HERE ARE OUR TOP TIPS FOR SETTING YOUR BUSINESS APART…

Carefully read the criteria

Before planning your entry, visit the categories section on our website to read the entry criteria. This will not only help you decide which awards your business is eligible to enter, but it will also give you key points to highlight when writing your entry.

Don’t do it all at once

Putting a winning awards entry together is going to take time and consideration, so don’t expect to be able to do it all in one go. You can copy and paste the questions from our website into a Word document so you can fill in your answers over an extended period of time. That way, if your broadband goes down, you know you have a back-up too.

Sell yourself and shine

Your written awards entry is a chance to really sell your business – so don’t hold back. Include every detail you can think of that makes your store or brand stand out from the crowd and proves you’re a worthy winner. While we often don’t like to ‘blow our own trumpet’ in real life, this is your chance to shine…so really go for it! 46 | boutique. | JUNE 2022

Show your personality

An entry that’s upbeat and interesting to read is sure to catch the judges’ attention. So, when outlining your business’s strengths and achievements, try to put your personality across too. The judges are looking for outstanding businesses, but anything that makes them smile (or cry) is bound to be memorable.

Back up your claims

Don’t just say you go the extra mile for your customers, explain how. Likewise, you can include graphs and data to prove your business is commercially successful. The images you submit are also an important part of your entry as they give the judges a visual guide to your boutique and website. Your store images don’t have to be professional photographs – Instagram shots are perfectly acceptable – but ensure they show off your business at its best.

Ask for help

Your biggest fans are your loyal customers – and they’ll no doubt have lots of reasons why they choose to shop with you. Asking for feedback, whether it’s simply in-person or with a detailed

questionnaire, could unveil some positive points that you may not have considered for your entry. Likewise, your staff are likely to be invaluable in putting your entry together, so involve them in the process too.

Enter more than one award

There’s no limit on how many categories each boutique or brand can enter, so check to see which awards you’re eligible for and enter them all. That way you’ll have even more chances of winning or scooping several categories across the board.

Check and recheck your entry It may sound pretty basic, but you should put as much effort into proofreading your entry as you would a job application or CV. The odd typo is forgivable but sending an entry that’s littered with mistakes will make the text difficult to read and the judges may question your professionalism and commitment. So if you know you struggle in this area, it’s definitely worth asking someone to read your entry before you hit the submit button.

Don’t leave it until the last minute

Most of us work better under pressure but giving yourself plenty of time to put your entry together will make the process less stressful and probably yield the best results. The deadline for this year’s entries is Friday 1 July, but our best advice is to start working on it as soon as you can. Enter now at boutique-magazine. co.uk/submit-an-entry

FOLLOWING ITS MOVE TO LARGER VENUES IN MANCHESTER AND LONDON, JUST AROUND THE CORNER IS RAPIDLY GAINING MOMENTUM AS A MUST-ATTEND SHOW

J

ust Around the Corner (JATC) has sold out of exhibitor space for its upcoming Manchester edition as the number of brands on its roster surpasses 150. The event is set to take place at Freight Island this 2-3 August followed by a second edition at East London’s T1 and T2 spaces inside The Truman Brewery Complex (7-9 August). The fashion trade show, which offers both womenswear and menswear, first launched its North England edition in January this year following the success of its London show. In March, organisers announced its move to larger venues in both cities. Founder Juls Dawson comments: “The momentum and response that January’s show created has taken us aback and clearly displays a gap in the show calendar we have been happy to fill. Our focus is to increase the international footflow with our friends in Ireland in particular, for whom Manchester has easy access and is a path well-travelled for buyers.” This summer will see the introduction of dedicated premium womenswear section The Edit as well as a new Lifestyle zone. The show will also extend its presentation of fashion-forward sustainable labels following a successful introduction last season. Finally, Manchester attendees will see new outdoor networking spaces with bars and seating zones offering views across the surrounds of Mayfield Park – the first park to be built in Manchester for over 100 years.

Revenue streaming HOW ELISA HELPS MAKE LIVE STREAM SALES AN EASY AND PROFITABLE PART OF A BOUTIQUE MARKETING STRATEGY

S

ince the beginning of the pandemic, live streaming has become a popular way for retailers to interact with their customers. And shoppers are embracing the technology, as recent data suggests 70 per cent of consumers in Europe have already explored or are open to trying live commerce. Many womenswear indies in the UK are reaping the benefits live shopping brings, streaming regular videos on social media to showcase new products and drive online sales. For shoppers, watching live streams is a way of connecting with their favourite shops without leaving the front door. Viewers can ask questions during broadcasts and the person hosting the event can react directly, creating a personalised experience that’s akin to an inperson interaction. But despite its benefits, live stream shopping isn’t always a seamless process. For the retailer, keeping up with answering numerous questions from viewers and then processing manual orders can be a tall order – especially if you have a small team. Shoppers, meanwhile, can quickly lose the momentum to buy if they’re directed to a homepage, inbox or telephone number that doesn’t allow them to make an instant purchase. Luckily, new UK launch ELISA offers a viable solution that makes live sales easy for both the retailer and consumer. Its ‘comment selling robot’ automatically sends product links to your live video viewers, CONTACT: elisa.io E: hey@elisa.io 64 | boutique. | JUNE 2022

creating a seamless experience for shoppers and simplifying the process for you. And it can be used for live streaming or shoppable videos on Facebook and Instagram. Set-up is simple: retailers click a button to connect their social media channel to their ELISA account before setting up the products and offers they want to promote. Throughout the live stream, ELISA keeps track of viewer comments and automatically adds orders to customers’ baskets while watching inventory levels, so the retailer doesn’t over sell. Customers can choose their delivery method and pay online while they’re still watching or after the live stream has finished. This means there’s less work for the retailer and a more cohesive buying journey for consumers. There are already hundreds of retailers using ELISA all over Europe – and they are reaping the rewards. After each live event, ELISA says its customers are experiencing increased sales - both online and in their physical stores. The majority of its users have reported a 10-100 per cent increase in revenue six months after implementing live shopping as part of their strategy. Plus, 95 per cent are pulling organic traffic from their social channels to their websites with the help of ELISA, meaning they’re saving costs on paid advertising. Research suggests that brand engagement is higher for live stream sales compared to other marketing and sales channels. Danish data

indicates that 85 per cent of viewers expect to make a purchase after watching a live event. Success stories include Danish plus-size fashion specialist PlusPige, which turns over £1.3 million each year on live sales alone. The independent retailer uses ELISA’s creative graphic overlays during its live Facebook videos to highlight key products and prices. Each of its live streams pulls in around 25,000 views and 17,000 comments, which, for a team of 14 people, wouldn’t be possible to manage without ELISA. STICK AND RIBBON

A new era

F

ollowing the regeneration of Nottingham’s famous Bridlesmith Gate, Stick and Ribbon has joined several other indies in its move to the prime city centre location. We catch up with owner Sally Longden to find out how she feels about entering a new phase for her 12-year-old business... JUNE 2022 | boutique. | 69

Moving on up

WITH A NEW STORE IN A PREMIUM CITY CENTRE LOCATION, NOTTINGHAM’S STICK AND RIBBON IS THRIVING. GEMMA WARDS MEETS OWNER SALLY LONGDEN TO FIND OUT HOW THE MOVE SIGNIFIES A NEW ERA FOR HER 10-YEAR-OLD BUSINESS

C

ity centre retail is notoriously tough for indies. With high rates and rents alongside long leases, the most premium retail destinations are often unrealistic for small fashion businesses. But as the landscape of our city centres evolve, more independents are finding themselves trading alongside the major players – and pulling in their footfall, too. One such business is 12-year-old womenswear indie Stick and Ribbon, 70 | boutique. | JUNE 2022

which recently relocated to one of Nottingham’s most famous retail streets. The boutique has previously occupied three other city centre units over the years, but owner Sally Longden says it has always been hidden away down an alley or arcade: “We have built quite a large customer base over the years, but it’s not always easy running a business that’s tucked away,” she says. “We’re excited to have moved to somewhere with more of a buzz.”

Style revival

Stick and Ribbon’s latest incarnation now sits on the city’s Bridlesmith Gate – a prime history-rich location known for premium fashion and high-end retailers. The cobbled city street took quite a hit following the closure of nearby shopping centre the Broadmarsh, which brought a lot of passing trade. It lost a number of stores in 2019 – including Pretty Green and American Apparel – followed by even more throughout the pandemic.

SHOP TALK

But thanks to a new landlord buying 11 properties last year with a vision to regenerate the area, Sally says it’s quickly returning to its former glory: “Bridlesmith Gate has been given a real boost and it’s creating a lot of excitement in the city. A reduction in rent and a bit of movement on the leases means more indies have been able to move here. It’s like a mini high street within the centre and it’s a great feeling to be part of its regeneration.” Stick and Ribbon has taken over the former premises of indie gift shop The Tokenhouse, which traded there for 45 years. It is now flanked by a range of independent retailers including Sneakrverse, the brainchild of a local 19-yearold entrepreneur; premium multi-brand fashion boutique 18 Montrose; independent jeweller Keishi Jewellery; craft coffee shop BARiSTA and local estate agent Pygott and Crone. “We also have Flannels, Fred Perry, Hugo Boss, Reiss and Paul Smith in the vicinity,” says Sally, who runs the boutique with her 23-year-old

daughter Ellie Philpott. “Then there’s Fat Face and Joules down the road, so there’s already a strong fashion customer base.”

New home

Stick and Ribbon’s new 1,200 sq ft shop floor is “bigger, fresher and more exciting” than its former home, with large windows for showcasing its impressive line-up of brands. Core labels include Essentiel Antwerp and Pom Amsterdam while it has also recently introduced US denim specialist Paige. Sally says affordable dresses by Grace and Mila are also strong sellers alongside NOS basics from Coster Copenhagen. Increased space means they’ve introduced new categories too, such as till-point Candier candles and sunglasses. Sally and Ellie designed the store’s interior themselves – even fashioning countertops using Ikea furniture from their home. They decided to split the space into two sections: a dedicated denim area offering an eyecatching display of jeans – its bestselling category - as well as a sofa for shoppers (and their partners) to relax.

They’ve also covered some interior and exterior walls with artificial plants, which they plan to switch up each season. The owner says the shop refit was a mammoth task, partly because they wanted to use local businesses and do a lot of the work themselves. “Anyone who’s wanted any building work done recently will know how tough it is to get tradesmen,” says Sally. “It took around five weeks to complete the refurb in total, with Ellie and I working some 15-hour days. Our local window cleaner is also a handy man, so he put our rails up. Then we got an electrician by chance because he was walking by. In the end it almost became a joint local project and everyone was excited to be a part of it.”

Spreading the word

The new shop has garnered attention from the local press, with the Nottingham Evening Post publishing a feature on its grand opening. Sally also got involved in local magazine project Everyday INC, whose debut issue features 50 local Nottingham independents and is distributed for JUNE 2022 | boutique. | 71

free across the city. “We really like to support our fellow indies and try and visit new businesses and post about them on our Instagram account,” says Sally. “We’ve also made new connections after being involved with the magazine. For instance, local café Yolk gave us a jar full of tokens for free coffee to give out to our customers.” Support from other indies has come from further afield, too: “We’ve had so many messages congratulating us from other boutique owners around the UK – some have even sent flowers. It can be a tough old world so it’s so nice to feel like there’s a community of fashion indies that genuinely want to see other small businesses doing well.” Stick and Ribbon also hosted two VIP events in the lead up to its official opening, inviting regular customers to bring a friend to peruse its latest collections. “The pre-opening events were really successful,” says Sally. “But when we opened to the public on a Saturday it was unbelievable. There really was so much footfall outside, we couldn’t believe it. I’d say around 90 per cent of sales were from new customers that day.” 72 | boutique. | JUNE 2022

Buying selection

Sally says the store’s line-up is carefully curated to appeal to a wide audience, with some shoppers buying dresses for £300 and others spending £25 on a tee. “We don’t want to alienate anyone with our products and price points,” she says. “There’s something for everyone across the age range.” Although the store attracts a varied demographic, the owner says its new location and addition of her daughter on the pay roll is helping to attract a younger audience. “Even having a younger person on the shop floor seems to be bringing in a more youthful customer,” says Sally. “But Ellie has a lot of input in everything from our social media to the buying, so that has had quite an impact too.” Looking forward to the rest of the year, Sally says she’s focused on establishing Stick and Ribbon in its new home. “I’d also like to think we’ll be able to introduce our own capsule collection at some point, offering styles we often get asked for but can’t always find,” she says. But for now, Sally says she’s thrilled to be entering this new era for the business, especially after such

a tough couple of years trading in the city during the pandemic: “We’ve worked really hard - it feels like it’s our moment to reflect on what we’ve achieved and how far we’ve come,” she says. “We couldn’t have done this as a new start-up – it’s a considerable size business now and we’ve done it the right way, building our customer base and acquiring brands that fit the local market. Now we can work on growing with it.”

GROW YOUR BUSINESS THE SMARTER WAY WITH CITRUS-LIME’S CLOUD POS LOYALTY PROGRAMME

D

iscounting lines at your boutique is understandable; you want to please your customers and provide an incentive for them to

come back and shop with you. But doing so eats into the profits you make. If you can sell your lines at full price and give your customers a reason to buy from you again, it presents an

opportunity for you to make extra profit. Citrus-Lime’s Cloud POS Loyalty can help you do this. By offering customers a better deal on everything they buy from you after their first purchase, they will always have a reason to come back to your boutique. You don’t have to offer hard discounts because the customer will be getting money off their next purchase from you anyway. Meanwhile, you benefit from a repeat purchase, so everyone’s a winner. Cloud POS Loyalty is easy to implement and enables you to build a loyal customer base. It also lowers your customer acquisition costs because it reduces the prospect of ‘one time only’ shoppers. Using Cloud POS Loyalty to encourage customers to keep buying from you increases your sales by 20 per cent - making it a smarter way to grow your business.

THREE SOFTWARE’S PAUL FULLALOVE ON BOOSTING IN-STORE AND E-COMMERCE PROFITS

“D

id you know that 54 per cent of consumers go in-store before completing their purchase online? Conversely, 53 per cent research products online prior to purchasing in a physical store. In the UK, e-commerce now accounts for over a quarter of total retail sales. And this is set to rise to a third by 2024. The data really highlights how retailers need a good e-commerce presence so they don’t miss out on sales. There needs to be a link between the channels and retailers need to offer a great service to both in-store and online customers and

cross market between them. This means getting online shoppers to visit your physical store and your in-store customers to buy online. To do this the technology you use needs to be integrated. It’s paramount that any retail solution you use has a single stock view and a single product file. This means you need to involve your EPoS solution in online sales and vice versa - and both solutions need to truly understand fashion. Three Retail offers many options from a low cost one-size-fits all solution to a peak performance system we use for larger operations. Retailers such as DV8 and Jonzara in Ireland

take the best of breed solutions and integrate them, using our Retail 3 solution combined with IRP Commerce. This is proving to be a phenomenal match that really increases sales and profits. Isn’t it time you used the latest retail technology to grow your business?” Paul Fullalove is a former fashion retailer and managing director at Three Software.

“Bira’s message is to embrace technology and make it work for your business. A small investment can save a lot of time and generate more income” ANDREW GOODACRE, CEO AT BIRA, ON INVESTING IN NEW RETAIL TECHNOLOGY

“T

here never seems to be a day go by when I do not receive some form of communication about new technology. There is no escape from it whether it comes via e-mail, Facebook, or linked-in and all this new technology claims that it that will make my life easier and improve my business. Over the past few months, I’ve taken part in a panel debate at an event called Retail without Borders and also attended the Retail Week Live event in London. While these were different events, both were dominated by companies presenting new technology and new ideas for retailers. “We’ve all seen the impact of technology in society and for businesses. I have to say that much of it is very interesting and I am always impressed by the imagination and vision of these technology specialists – they see retailing in a way that I can barely imagine. At the Retail Week event the main focus seemed to be on communications and managing data. It was mainly aimed at the large chain retailers where data management has taken on a whole new level of meaning. The development of Artificial 76 | boutique. | JUNE 2022

Intelligence (AI) to analyse data has enabled large businesses to interpret huge amounts of customer information from the use of things like store cards, visiting websites and purchases. Much of it is used to better understand the consumer and improve the shopping experience. There is a huge focus on ‘personalisation’ to establish the relationship/ connection between the consumer and the retailer or brand. “It all makes sense, but it comes at a price and often requires significant investment. Small retailers may well believe that ‘big technology’ is not relevant to them – but that would be a mistake. It is always possible to learn from what others are doing. For instance capturing and using data is important, starting with a simple digital database of customers to improve communications. If you are using a website, Google Analytics is freely available to help you understand the traffic visiting your website and its popularity. “These are just examples of relatively simple ways to use technology to improve business and consumer understanding. The main barriers to small business owners are time, finance and skills. We have raised this issue

with the government department for business and they have set up a fund to help businesses with digital growth (visit gov. uk/business-finance-support/ help-to-grow-digital-uk). While we disagree with the eligibility criteria, it is worthwhile checking it out as it could well help many small businesses take those first steps to introduce technology. “Bira is a traditional, conservative organisation. But even we have recognised the importance of technology. That is why we have developed online trading platform Neartoo to help smaller retailers move into hybrid/ digital retailing. We have also launched an app for retailers to use when ordering stock through our buying group, which all about convenience, ease of use and relevance. “Bira will keep introducing new technology to directly help our members. We will also find the right technology partners for retailers because it is hard for individuals to find the best solution with so much choice. Above all else, our message is to embrace technology and make it work for your business. A small investment can save a lot of time for owners and staff while it can also generate more income.”

SHOP TALK HARROGATE FASHION WEEK

“The best way for brands to show their new collections to buyers is in-person” HARI KRISHNADASAN, MD AT CAPRI LONDON, ON THE RETURN OF TRADE SHOWS THIS SUMMER

“W

e have all been ‘living with covid’ for some time now and the major trade shows are all set to go ahead this summer - and not just in the UK, but across Europe and the USA too. With 95 per cent of regular exhibitors preferring physical shows to virtual events, it’s clear the best way for brands to show their collections is inperson. It means we can connect with buyers on a more personal level while our clothing can be touched, tried on and seen ‘in the flesh.’ “Businesses that use trade shows as part of their marketing strategy were surveyed as to how they were affected during the lockdowns - and the results aren’t all too surprising. Over half (54 per cent) saw a reduction in new business, 31 per cent had 78 | boutique. | JUNE 2022

difficulty in reaching new markets, 26 per cent noticed a reduction in brand recognition and 14 per cent found it difficult to keep up with market trends. Although businesses rely on online channels for marketing as well as market research, trade shows clearly still have value for exhibitors as shown by these negative effects during the pandemic. Getting people from the industry together under one roof remains an excellent way to keep the conversation going. “Despite a seismic shift in many business practices caused by the pandemic, it seems that trade shows are here to stay. In the same survey, 65 per cent of businesses said in-person trade shows were an invaluable part of their marketing strategy. However, 35 per cent of respondents said that these

industry events needed to change to stay relevant, such as reducing exhibition costs, making set-up and transport to the venue easier and maybe working with local hotels and hospitality venues to give a discounts to attendees and exhibitors. “The pandemic has changed many business practices, including the growth in the e-commerce sector as well as popularising remote working. But it’s clear from the survey results that trade shows remain vitally important to exhibitors’ marketing strategies, with a loss of benefits being felt when they were cancelled due to covid. While it’s clear that trade shows need to adapt to stay relevant, they still have a part to play for many businesses looking to attract new customers and break into new markets.”
