CORE VALUE OF THE MONTH
DIVERSITY MAKES US STRONGER
The beauty and potential of our learners lie in their diversity. We respect, value, and celebrate differences in race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, abilities, backgrounds, and experiences, as well as perspectives and opinions. As a community, we strive to be reflective and representative of the learners we proudly serve. It is through rich diversity that we will together achieve greatness.
For the month of February, we are putting a special emphasis on the Core Value "Diversity Makes Us Stronger." Below you will find examples provided from the Community Week session and from other community conversations of how your colleagues are intentionally incorporating the Core Values into their work. ~
Here are the ways YOU are committing to this Core Value in your work:
Committing to understanding our student population
Encouraging students to share their stories and celebrate their differences
Reviewing inclusive language in all course documents
Learning how to better delve deeper into student issues that may make me feel uncomfortable
Having compassion and respect for where people are coming from
Participating in ongoing campus events to meet and engage co-workers and students from all different backgrounds
Seeing all perspectives of potential for our student population with branding and marketing

INTRODUCING THE BAY PATH UNIVERSITY GOLDEN COMPASS AWARDS
In December 2022, Bay Path University awarded our first-ever Core Values Award, celebrating a member of our community who fully embodies our values through intentionality and mindfulness, working diligently to bring the Core Values to fruition in their daily interactions and work. We all know that taking our values off the page and into the everyday fabric of our institution is a year-long, 365-day commitment that each of us undertakes. The intentional work we are all weaving into our daily interactions is worth celebrating more than once a year.
The Bay Path Golden Compass Award is a monthly award, presented at our Community Luncheons, that highlights a small but mighty act of working to bring our Core Values to life. The nomination process is simple - consider it a virtual comment box for your coworkers. All community members able are encouraged to submit a peer they want to commend for being intentional with applying the Bay Path Core Values to their work and relationships. See someone exemplifying “We Pledge to Foster Inclusion and Belonging”? Drop a note in the virtual nomination box letting us know. Notice someone making an active choice to promote diversity or innovation? Drop a note in the virtual nomination box letting us know. The form is quick, fast, and requires minimal information. We hope you’ll use it often.
We know that the good work is underway, and the nomination form is officially open. Who have you noticed living our Core Values?

UNDERSTANDING STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH DIAGNOSES DISCUSSION
On Wednesday, January 25th, nearly 50 faculty, and staff members joined together to debrief on the professional development training webinar Understanding Student Mental Health Diagnoses facilitated by Tanya ColesDailey, Assistant Director of the Health and Wellness Center, and BaoChau Heiskala, LICSW from New Path Counseling.
The discussion centered around helping participants navigate the balancing act between student well-being and academic integrity. Below are some key takeaways from that discussion.
Explore implementing mental health days for students and emphasize that no explanation for that absence is needed.
Include a statement of empathy in course syllabi. Students have different comfort levels, and backgrounds, and have different lived experiences. Matters of mental health should be handled on an individual basis and not generically.
Recognize that mental health issues for one student can impact the entire classroom when a matter of conduct comes into play.
Listen for warning signs and triggers. Be a safe space for students to feel open to sharing as reaching out for help is one of the biggest challenges that students with mental health issues face.
Ensure that students feel heard and seen. Show empathy and flexibility by changing deadlines and giving days off. Make sure that students do not feel a sense of anxiety when it comes to catching up on coursework.
Help fight the stigma of mental health diagnoses and be mindful of the intersectionality between social culture and ability
Give students accommodations and support when needed while also encouraging independence to prepare students for the workforce as they develop executive functioning skills.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Black History Month is a dedicated time to recognize and celebrate the integral role and many achievements that African Americans have had in United States history.
Years following the abolition of slavery by the 13th amendment in 1865, Carter G. Woodson and Jesse E. Moorland founded a group called the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History whose mission was to promote the great milestones and achievements made by African Americans.
February was chosen as it is the month where both Abraham Lincoln, the President that approved the Joint Resolution of Congress submitting the proposal of the 13th amendment, and Frederick Douglas, a national leader of the abolitionist movement, were born.
What was previously Black History Week, evolved into Black History Month when President Gerald Ford urged the American public to, "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history" in 1976.
Every year since 1976, it has been made a tradition that the current President of the United States choose a theme for each Black History Month. This year, President Joseph Biden chose "Black Resistance" to prompt reflection on the countless ways African Americans have resisted oppression and racial terrorism.
As Frederick Douglas once said, "We have to do with the past only as we can make it useful to the present and the future." Let us reflect on where we have been to have a clearer vision of where we as a country need to go.
THE ALVIN CARTER PROJECT
Don't miss an unforgettable performance by the Alvin Carter Project, a jazz trio, at this year ' s annual Black History Month Luncheon!
