epartment of Science and Technology GOI and Vibha (Vigyan Bharati) has come up with a unique website www.scienceindia.in for the popularisation of science among school students of class 6-12.

One of the salient features of the website is to provide a mentor to each student. Students from across India can register with the website free of cost. Each mentor will register to the website with specific area of expertise (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and Environment Science). Mentor module will be like Facebook where a student will send a request to a mentor and the mentor can review the student’s background and accept the request. Then both of them can communicate. he official statement issued by the health ministry informs that from May 2018, the aspirants planning to obtain a medical degree from foreign universities should have to clear the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test). Only those students who have already taken admission under current regulations to pursue medical course by taking Eligibility Certificate from MCI (Medical Council of India) are exempted from qualifying NEET. The aim of this proposal is to avoid the dull medical aspirants from getting a degree from foreign medical colleges on the basis of money or recommendations.

T

he Scientific and Engineering Academy Award at Oscars Scientific and Technical Awards 2018 was awarded to Vikas Sathaye, an Indian engineer. He along with his team was presented with this award for their contribution towards designing, engineering and implementing the ‘Shotover K1 Camera System’ that is used for aerial filming. The awards are conferred on three levels: Technical Achievement Award (certificate), Scientific and Engineering Award (bronze tablet) and Academy Award of Merit (Oscar statuette).

new class of antibiotics, Malacidins, was discovered by the scientists from The Rockefeller University in New York. The antibiotic is produced by microorganisms living in soil and dirt and comes from molecules present in large variety of soils.

It is capable of killing off several antibiotic resistant pathogens. To understand about how new class of antibiotics is

orld Radio Day is observed on February 13 every year. To mark this day, India’s first radio festival was held at the UNESCO House in New Delhi on February 13, 2018. With an aim to bring radio professionals, podcasters and other digital audio programmers together this festival was organised by International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT) in partnership with United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). Based on the theme ‘Radio and Sports’, it included discussions of expert panels, exhibition and live performances.

fter bilateral talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, India and Iran signed nine agreements, including one on connectivity related to strategic Chabahar Port and on double taxation avoidance. The bilateral talks focused on boosting cooperation

Chandrayaan-2 to be launched in April 2018 site in semi-autonomous

handraayan-2, India’s second mission to the moon that is to be launched in April, is a challenging mission as for the first time it will carry an orbiter, a lander and a rover to the moon.

This will be ISRO’s first interplanetary mission to land a rover on the moon’s South Pole. As decided by the group commands, the six wheeled rover would move around the landing

mode. Instruments on the rover would observe the lunar surface and send back data. This data would be useful for analysis of lunar soil. Weighing around 3290 kg, the total cost of the Chandrayaan 2 mission is about Rs 800 crores.

The payloads would collect scientific information on lunar topography, mineralogy, elemental abundance and lunar exosphere.

n February 16, 2018, the Supreme Court had ordered the Karnataka government to release 177.25 tmcft (one thousand million cubic feet) of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, reducing the quantum specified by the panel in 2007.

The Supreme Court has also announced in clear words that water is a national asset and no one state can claim a monopoly over it. There are controversies galore between the two states.

Perhaps, this is a prelude to the fact that the future war could be due to water.

The World Water Day is observed on March 22 every year. Many organisations are taking a new route to inculcate a sense of responsibility in people by stepping up campaign on water conservation.

Several initiatives were take in the past on the sensible use of water, but most of the campaigns were limited to either a ministry or a state.

For the first time ever, the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation is preparing a nationwide ‘Water Conservation Campaign’. The campaign, which is to start in May this year, aims to promote Israel’s water technology in India to preserve and conserve water in the country.

urged various research bodies to help in innovating in areas of water conservation and sustainable management of water resources.

Considered as the future citizens, the present younger generation needs to bear four important things in mind: water conservation, water management, safeguarding ground water from different kinds of pollution and developing water resources.

Saving water for future

According to researchers at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), more than half of the world population will live in waterstressed areas by 2050. Water needs to be accurately treated to its value. If not, we will have to start planning for the realistic scenario where we turn on a tap and nothing comes out.

How can we incorporate the idea of water conservation in students’ minds?

Small steps taken in the school to conserve water to inculcate the habit in children can extend the practice to home and live with them lifelong. We may have activities and discussions to look carefully at how we use water to make them realise how much we waste. Brushing teeth while keeping the tap open for 2 minutes could be physically measured and shown. Water collected from a dripping pipe for few hours could be visibly measured. The students can be encouraged to create exhibits for “Water saving modern city” addressing areas of water wastage and simple ways to tackle it. They can also be sent as “Water ambassadors” to public places, nearby cities and villages to spread awareness about conserving water.

Life is impossible without water and that is why human civilization was cradled on the banks of rivers. Though 75% of the earth is filled with water, it is salt water. Only 2% of water is fresh and that flows into rivers, ponds, tanks, wells. Nature can very well handle the balance of total moisture on earth in an intelligent way; we cannot let it manage all the chaos created by man. Water binds all of us together, we humans should preserve forest and create more to welcome rain to fall onto our landscape and not flow into oceans to get wasted.

Have you ever developed any innovative idea for conserving water?

Toilets consume a huge quantity of water every day. My friends and I developed a ‘bio-toilet’ that is cost-effective, eco-friendly and above all, consumes one-third the normal amount of water required by a traditional ceramic toilet!

Less water is required for flushing since the bio digester tank creates a partial vacuum that makes it easier for the waste to get flushed.

If the bio-toilet can replace traditional toilets, in at least public places, then the quantity of water saved is phenomenal. Humans have devised enough techniques to conserve water but are reluctant to try them out. The need of the hour is to spread awareness on encouraging the conservation of water.

Who is to be blamed for the current situation for scarcity of water?

We have a kind of apathy towards water conservation. In fact, we are more concerned about safety of our things like house, cars, mobile phone etc. We forget the fact that water is quintessential for life. We, human beings, are responsible for the current situation. Our false notion of development and modernisation has led us to this.

What could be the best way for conserving water?

There can be 100 ways to conserve water, but the most important thing is planting more and more trees. It should be mandatory for every student of India to plant and nurture at least 5 trees in his school days. He/ She should not be graduated from High school unless he/she has 5 fully grown trees to show. We must have rain water harvesting equipment on every roof top. Children at schools must be taught Water Manners. Water recycling process should be made easy so that every home can have one. Above all, government should ban flush toilets as so much water is wasted due to its usage.

What will the world look like without water?

Firstly, humans, animals, plants and even most micro-organisms would not exist. Beautiful and useful forests that support life, provide fruits, wood, rubber and shade would vanish. The hot deserts will be hotter, and the cold tundra, even colder. The oceans would be dry. Instead of being brilliant blue bodies of water, the oceans would be impressive rock formations rivaling even the Grand Canyon. Only organisms like trilobites that could survive on even an asteroid and not more than the size of bacteria would roam our planet.

Yes, I agree with the statement. Scientists predict that the earth will face a major water crisis after 30 years and this will surely lead to a war. World’s super powers will dominate the poor or underdeveloped countries.

Reusing Greywater - Very minimal treatment is needed to make the greywater usable. Greywater released into rivers and lakes pollutes them, but the same greywater is valuable fertilizer for plants. Systems can be built to treat this water and make it reusable for household needs.

Rainwater Harvesting - This provides an independent water supply during regional water restrictions, and in developed countries, is often used to supplement the main supply. It also provides water when a drought occurs. These systems are not complex and are relatively easy to setup.

Richard Damania, a lead economist at the World Bank, has predicted that without adequate water supplies, economic growth in most stressed parts of the world could decline by six per cent of the GDP. His findings conclude that the most severe impacts of climate change will deplete water resources.

It is a self evaluating system where we understand the actual water requirement for us and our family and how much we waste. n January 16, 2018, she scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a medal in the international skiing event. She bagged a bronze at the Alpine Ejder 3200 Cup, organised by the Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS) at the Palandoken Ski Centre in Erzurum in Turkey. It was not an easy win for Aanchal Thakur as there is no culture, or even infrastructure, for winter sports in India and there is hardly any support from the Union Sports Ministry as well.

The 21-year-old Manali girl even represented India in skiing event at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics that took place in Innsbruck, Austria. She says that skiing is an expensive sport and it badly needs greater recognition to take off in India. It is the first time that the Winter Games Federation of India has won a medal in more than 30 years of international competitions.

Brainfeed interacted with this skiing champion of India. Excerpts: You have become the first Indian to win a medal at the Alpine Ejder 3200 Cup, an international skiing event held in Turkey. Your feelings on that?

I felt very great. When I received the medal, I wasn’t able to believe myself. At that moment, I didn’t realise that I was the first Indian, to win this medal in this sport.

Why are winter sports not given much recognition in India?

The snow in India is only in limited parts and that too only for two

months. The infrastructure also is not good for winter sports here.

73 percent of the Himalayan range is in India. So what is holding back winter sports?

We are so lucky that we have the Himalayas where we can make proper resorts for youngsters to train at. Winter sports are not an affordable prospect. The equipments cost at least `5 lakhs.

More than that the training for this sport is also expensive. Rather than going abroad for training, if we can do that here in India it will

be beneficial. The cost will come down drastically.

When did you start training for this sport?

I started it at the age of 5.

He is the chairman of Tarun Bharat Sangh that is known for doing ecological research and land development to provide clean and fresh water to people.

Reviving the tradition of Johad O

n the night of October 2, 1985, I got down at the bus stop at Bheekampura, Rajasthan, with four of my friends. We had a single agenda, which was ‘to fight injustice against the people’. So we started a literacy drive.

But, the people there suffered from a severe scarcity of water.

The region that once sustained the eco-system of the ‘Aravalli’ had become barren.

Women trudged long distances to fetch a mere pot full of water. Crops failed regularly, lack of vegetation led to soil degradation; monsoon runoff washed away the topsoil. Barely 3 per cent of cultivable farmland was irrigated.

One day, Mangu Patel, the wise old man of this village told me, “We do not want your literacy, we want water.” But where was the Water? I did not know anything about water.

Mangu explained me about the rich tradition existing in this region of building ‘Johads’, the inexpensive simple traditional technology that was quite remarkable in terms of recharging groundwater of the entire region.

‘Johads’ are simple mud and concave shaped barriers built across the slope to arrest the rainwater runoff with a high embankment on three sides while the fourth side is left open for the water to enter. It is based on simple and cheap technology with locally available resources.

On Mangu Patel’s advice, we became a catalyst to building ‘Johads’. The local authorities were totally against us as we by-passed all bureaucratic channels and dealt with the people directly to fulfill their requirements in the manner they decided.

The first ‘Johad’ took three years to build, in the fourth year we built 50 ‘Johads’, in the fifth we built almost 100. In 2001, we built around 1,000 water structures and in total we have built nearly 9,000 water harvesting structures in more than 1,000 villages. When we started working, our area was classified by the government as ‘dark zone’, it means with severe water shortage and the water level had receded to difficult depths.

The same area after 10 years was classified as ‘white zone’, which means underground water level is satisfactory and it does not need attention from the government.

More water meant better crops, better conditions of soil, time for the girls to go to schools, and rich community life. It helped forestation in the area and development of wildlife. Ruparel, Bhagani and Jahajwali have become perennial.

Since 1940s, the Arvari River had been degraded to be a mere monsoon drain, witnessing only brief and strong flows of muddy water. We had been building these structures over the years without realising that we were in fact recharging the river through percolation underground. Now, the water is clear and flows gently throughout the year.

The Arvari River is the lifeline of prosperity for 72 villages situated along its bank.

The 21st century is a dangerous landscape. The year 2017 witnessed 10 times more drought and eight times more floods in the country. In present times, we need right to water.

The water, which belongs to all, has been converted into Rs 50,000-crore business of packaged mineral water bottles. About 72 per cent of underground aquifers are over drafted. Arsenic and fluoride, polluting ground water has been increasing.

Small steps make a difference.

Students need to dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to fight for it and tackle all issues from encroachment to pollution, and the result would soon be obvious.

e was born on November 9, 1999; just a day after Sachin Tendulkar smashed his way to 186 against New Zealand at Hyderabad, to become the highest ODI score by an Indian.

Following in the footsteps of the Master Blaster, at 14, he shot to prominence when he scored 546 off 330 balls, an innings that contained 85 fours and 5 sixes, for his school Rizvi Springfield in the Harris Shield, a minors’ cricket competition in Mumbai in 2013. It was then the highest score in school cricket.

He also has the unique record of scoring a century in both his Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy debuts. He was part of the India Under-19 squad that won the youth Asia Cup in Sri Lanka.

His love for cricket and his outstanding performances made him the captain of India’s Under-19 squad for the 2018 World Cup. An upcoming young prodigy, a right hand batsman and right arm off spin bowler, Prtihvi Shaw has been hyped up as one of India’s batting stars.

Now, Prithvi is part of the Delhi Daredevils team for the 11th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He is looking forward to the experience of competing in the high profile tournament.

I along with my team used to sit before the matches and discuss the positions, their strong points and weak points and accordingly I used to plan the strategies. It was quite easy for me to handle the team as I had experience of leading the cricket team in my school days.

Your feelings on winning the World Cup. Were you confident that you will lift the WC trophy for our mother land?

It was really good to bring laurels to our mother land. We created some good memories in New Zealand. The entire team put on the best efforts for the last 14 months.

On February 3, 2018, we played against Australia and defeated them by 8 wickets. It was a jubilant time for me and my team.

How was your bonding with your coach Rahul Dravid?

Yes, I am. My trainers give me a time of one and half hour every day to develop and maintain my fitness.

How do you balance academics and your matches?

From the past two years till the World Cup, it was a great journey for us with Rahul sir. I really enjoyed his monitoring and guidance. He shared his national and international cricketing experiences and was like a family member for us. He never uses technical language. He is very supportive and prepares us mentally.

His playing experience in New Zealand helped us in the successful U-19 World Cup campaign as we had the opportunity to ask him about the weather conditions. It was due to his guidance, and the

continuous effort from our team, we won the World Cup.

My dad used to love cricket. It was he who motivated me to play this game and supported me throughout my journey.

Right now I am practicing for Ranji Trophy. I had to appear for my Class XII board exams this year, but due to lack of preparations I am skipping it. I will appear for the exams either in October this year or in the next academic year.

he is 72. Still, she is one of the most prolific dam builders in the world and a woman who fights drought. She is the one who brought water to hundreds of villages in Rajasthan and other parts of India. She has transformed the villages by using traditional water harvesting techniques and by building check dams. Now people grow twothree crops a year, rear cattle and also access clean drinking water, thanks to her. With water available throughout the year, villages that were having less than 20 per cent of arable land are now able to cultivate in 80 per cent of total land and are able to witness a drastic change in their economic conditions. The credit for this drastic change goes to Amla Ruia, who is considered as the ‘water mother’ of India.

How did you get the idea of water harvesting?

How did you start your journey?

In the late 1990’s, there was a sever famine in Rajasthan.

By chance, in Mumbai I was looking at the pitiable photographs of the famine. The government and NGOs were sending food grains and water tankers, so did my father-in-law, who ran a Trust.

Suddenly an inspiration dawned that I must find a permanent solution for this problem. It became my passion that I have to do something for the rural community of my country; I owe it to our farmers.

I felt lost in the vast scenario so I decided to start from Ramgarh (Rajasthan) which was our ancestral village. Along with a water expert from Mumbai, I went to Ramgarh to analyse the situation and find a solution. We made a report and but that needed verification. Hence I visited some NGO’s and then came up with the idea of making check dams.

However, due to the land being completely flat in Ramgarh region, it was not possible to make check dams there. Our ancestors in the Shekhavati region of Ramgarh had built drinking-water kunds which are semi submerged water tanks with their own catchments and Pucca Johads that looked

like huge swimming pools.

These had dried up and required restoration. We started from Ramgarh, restoring the drinkingwater kunds. The rain water from the catchment area would flow to the semi-submerged tanks and get stored; this water served as a source of drinking water for the villagers as well as animals. At that time we constructed/ restored 200 drinking water kunds which continue to collect 2 crore litre of fresh, naturally distilled rainwater to the immense benefit of the villagers.

Explain about the check dam projects?

A check dam is a small dam constructed across a waterway to check flow of water and counteract erosion. In 2006, we built the first check dam at Mandawar in Alwar, Rajasthan.

Over 100 people were involved in constructional activities of the project. Aakar Charitable Trust invested 60% and the remaining 40% was being contributed by the villagers of the area, by collecting stones, gravel and water required for the construction, as well as

in the earthen labour work. We provided cement, JCB, tractor, wages of the mason and twothird of labour charges. Once the project was completed, we handed over the maintenance of the dam to the villagers. We have so far made 276 dams and currently, 26 check dams are under construction. I have decided to scale up my work from 30 check dams to 90 per year. I feel that before I leave this world, with Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grace, I must transform around 3,000 villages.

How many villages have benefitted from your water harvesting techniques?

Q

115 villages with a population of 1.56 lakh got totally transformed. Now, they have enough water to maintain their crops and cattle as well.

Tell us about Aakar Charitable Trust?

With the support of my family, I began this Trust with the idea of developing the villages. The other area that we work on is education. We would like to make the village atmosphere pleasant for everybody.

How do you manage to collect funds for your initiatives? Did you receive any support from the government?

We have our own CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiative.

Lots of likeminded people, family, and friends support us.

The Australian high command also gave `10 lakhs. The media has really respected my work.

The government has not shown much interest in our work, neither have they supported nor recognised our initiatives.

What challenges do you face in your work?

Do you think that we will have enough water for our future?

There are lots of negative energies in every village. It was a tough job convincing the farmers when we told them about their contribution and our contribution. However, once they were convinced, they usually kept their word, but once in a while, villagers would back out from their commitments in the middle of the construction and Aakar Charitable Trust had to bear majority of the costs. Many a times the intervention from the government and NGOâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also created hurdles in the operations.

Skillful execution of check dams could be the answer for having sufficient water in future. Check dams cannot be made everywhere as the terrain has to be suitable for them. If a 3rd World War is to happen, it could conceivably be on the issue of water, such is the gravity of the situation. I would want more and more people to be involved in water harvesting.

Unless the younger generation comes forward, this problem will not be solved. Water is scarce, so use it wisely and preciously.

I have roped in all my children and grand children, and have given them areas of work so that they can take care of my initiative after me. march 18

ut of over 3,000 entries, the artwork of two students from Tamil Nadu found a place in NASA’s 2018 Commercial Crew Program Calendar Art Contest. From over 193 countries across the globe these students sent their artwork to the International Space Station. Children aged 4 – 12 participated in this contest and twelve entrants were chosen to have their artwork printed in the 2018 calendar.

Vasantha Sevanan Principal, Shree Vidhya Mandhir, Pushpathur Five students from our school participated in the contest and each of them chose to work on a different topic. Our school has an exclusive arts and crafts class called ‘Tactile Land’ in which we train students to develop an interest for arts. The contest was a result of the tie-up that the school has with Imageminds, a digital media training institute that has over 35 centres across the country.

I selected only few children to participate in the contest. These children show interest towards art and work hard to get the best output. I selected the topic ‘What would you take from home?’ I gathered ideas and drew the picture but struggled for oil pastels colouring. It was difficult for me as I am familiar using colour pencils. Our Imageminds Coordinator, Ms. Mounika guided me about the combination of colours. I completed my painting and sent it to NASA. I was very happy, when I came to know about the selection of my painting. My parents were also very happy. I was so excited to see the media at my school as it was the first time I was addressing the media. In future, I would like to become a bus painter. I developed my interest in drawing and painting from class 3.

After selecting my topic, with the help of Mounika ma’am, I gathered some ideas; drew it on A4 sheet first and later made a fair copy of it. I took 2 days to complete this drawing.

Once the results were announced, and when I came to know about the selection of my drawing, I was very happy and thought how they selected my drawing. My parents were very happy. I received a certificate and calendar from NASA. I learnt drawing from class 3. My parents and my grandparents motivated me to draw.

In future, I would like to become an artist. I would like to make paintings, exhibit and sell them. I felt very happy when media people came to my school.

In future, I would also like to do something for our country, but till now I haven’t decided what to do next.

Hope Mars Probe, also known as Emirates Mars Mission is set to orbit Mars in July 2020. It will reach the planet by 2021, which will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the founding of the UAE. The spacecraft will be launched from Japan using a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries launcher. The probe will orbit the Red Planet until 2023, with an extended mission until 2025. It will send back more than 1000 GB of data to be analysed by

The spacecraft will study the planet’s atmosphere at different times of the day and during different seasons that includes the weather phenomena such

I walked away from his cabin, fuming with anger.

Who was he to say all this to me? Being my boss didn’t give him the authority to insult me.

I rushed into the cabin, and slammed the door.

There was no way I couldn’t be angry at what he said. Greedy?

He called me greedy?

I was definitely not self-centred. It was my confidence in my skills that made me achieve greater heights and not my greed. I chose to throw whatever he said to me into the dustbin, and not think about it anymore.

But the next day, due to the altercation, there was tension between me and the boss. Of course, there would be! He had mocked me, one of the leading game designers of the world. Every gaming company wanted me and knowing this fact, he dared call me greedy.

I went home early that day. We had been working 15-day non-stop on the launch of the new game, “Mortal Beings”, and had finally finished it.

GREED A month passed, and Mortal Beings soon became the number one Game of the year, thanks to me, but he still didn’t apologise to me for what he said. I went about my daily business like usual though.

With the popularity hike of the game, my popularity went up too.

Different companies started sending me e-mails on packages they were ready to offer me, but I really wasn’t in the mood to take any of them.

True, the boss said some unpolite things, but this gaming company was like family.

Everyone here loved and respected me. The boss, not withstanding his philosophical attitude, had a nice heart and would give me leaves most of the times I asked. Also, I received quite a high salary.

But the next day, something miraculous happened. I got e-mails from two different gaming companies“Ninten” & “Tendo” who wanted to recruit me. They were offering

me the same amount as I received here, and also didn’t mind me working for both of them simultaneously.

That means my salary could be ‘doubled’. Also, these companies held the No.1 & No.2 spot in the gaming industry respectively.

I was definitely going to take up this offer. But they wanted me to first resign from my current job if I wanted to strike a deal, which was rather odd, but I guess big companies have their own way of working.

Now, I would show the boss.

Next day, I walked to the boss’s cabin with a resignation letter and told him everything.

“See, my talent has made me reach such heights. Do you see now how mistaken you were to badmouth me back then?”

Gotham just smiled, “I wasn’t badmouthing you. I was just advising you on being content with what you have. You have a great job here, and don’t you think it’s a

little odd that they want you to resign before they give you an appointment letter. I think you should stay here.”

I was enraged. “You jealous being! Just because I am going to work for the best, you are envious of me, and it’s not odd at all. They must be knowing about the next game we are releasing this December and didn’t want me to finish it as it would lead to the downfall of all their profits.”

“Oh yes, must be,” he said. “ I would have been glad if you had stayed, but now that you are leaving, I won’t let you re-apply here again”.

I threw the resignation letter at him and just walked away.

Just one day before I was going to join Ninten& Tendo, the newspaper had a big headline of the closure of these two companies. I read the article and was devastated. Apparently, these two companies had been stealing ideas from a small scale company “Videogamz”, and therefore were blacklisted.

I held my head, my heart ready to break down. The boss’s words had been right. I had such a nice job, but due to my greed, I lost it. I should have been contented with what I had. Also, I realised one of the biggest lessons of life- “A bird in hand is worth two in bush” march 18
