As a doctor, I always advice my patients to drink lots of water as there are more health benefits in it. I felt good to see Brainfeed has a detailed coverage in the health column. Children can follow some tips mentioned in it to stay hydrated. I request the teachers and the parents to monitor the children at school and home to drink lots of water. Dr. Parmjeet Singh, Delhi
LISTEN
WATCH
Now you can read as well as listen to your favourite article and also watch videos on education, career, sports, skill building, entertainment and a lot more. Brainfeed magazine started presenting a new concept – that is you can listen to your favourite article being read by experts while you go through the article. And also watch videos of your interest from the list of videos given in the magazine. This is how it works • A QR code sign will be given along with the article or the video. • All you need is a QR code scanner or QR code reader app on your Smartphone.
My Mission Thank you Brainfeed team for publishing my achievements and my interview in the July issue. This was indeed a great platform for me to express my views to the younger generation to protect our nature. I hope many students will go through this article and join my expedition to know their effect of their everyday life on Mother Nature. Arjun Vajpai, Noida, Uttar Pradesh
Working of Touch Screens Many of us are familiar with touch screens, but it is true that many of us do not know how the touch screens work. The article in Big Question about touch screens has clearly explained about the types and working of touch screens. Now I am confident that I can explain the difference between the resistive touch screen and capacitive touch screen. M. Manasi, Tiruvananathapuram
• Download the app from Google play store or Apple app store.
Inviting reports from schools
REPORTERS
• Open the application, focus and hold the camera on the QR code of the article or the video you want to listen to or watch. • Then the QR code will lead you to the audio file of an educational expert, read the article for you or to the video that you wanted to watch. Don’t you think this is cool – so go on, read like an expert reader by just listening to an expert reader, read an article for you or watch a video to learn about an issue or topic or to learn a new skill.

Expert Talks
Mr. K.V. Pradeep Actor, Motivational Speaker
that the attention of the entire audience is immediately inclined towards you completely and comprehensively. It is this reason; to enthrall, fascinate and subject the audience to an immersive experience that the opening needs to be electrifying and attractive.
EFFECTIVE
PUBLIC SPEAKING
(This is the second in the series on ‘Effective Public Speaking’.) hy should there be an electrifying opening? It is believed that if one cannot captivate the audience in the first 60 seconds of a speech, we may lose their attention completely. Remember, it is the attraction of a speech that captivates the attention of an audience. In this light, one should not begin a speech straightaway by addressing members on the dais, or with a point of the main subject matter directly. Such a start may be deemed as a frequently used cliché and may not captivate or hook the audience.
W
Instead, imagine being a speaker and starting with an appealing and exciting human story or experience, or by posing a thought provoking question, or a real life example, and maybe even with a shocking news or a humorous joke; you will definitely notice
10
After the introductory account, one has to bridge the opening to the main content with a common element linking the subject saying something like; “… why I am saying so...” or “…similarly in the context of ...” etc. before moving on to the articulation of the subsequent subject matter.
At the end of a speech, i.e. in the last 10% of the time which has been mentally allotted for the conclusion or closing, it is desirable to recap or summarize the content and make an appeal: “…so I request you to…” or “…let’s all pledge from this day that…” or “…lets stand behind the people who are suffering…” etc. This facilitates the conclusion of a speech, having sowed the seeds of progressive and positive thought into the minds of the audience to achieve the manifestation of a desired action.
After preparation of the content, it is beneficial to rehearse the speech with the help of cue cards. Designing cue cards helps as a memory reference not only in the pre-speech preparation timeframe, but also during the actual rendition of the speech where they enable the enhancement of one’s confidence levels. To be continued

DEFORESTATION POLICY
N
orway has announced a complete ban on deforestation, making it the first country in the world to commit to a zero deforestation policy. Products that contribute to deforestation will not be used in the country. The pledge comes two years after the country issued a joint declaration with Germany and Britain at the
UN Climate Summit committing to “promote national commitments that encourage deforestation free supply chains, including through public procurement policies to sustainably source commodities such as palm oil, soy and timber.”
f all sports, swimming brings into play all the muscles in the human body. Apart from this, moving in the water helps us to get a perfect balance between the left and right sides of the body improving our co-ordination, the way the different parts of our body work together. This is why swimming is ideal for people who need to get back the use of a part of the body weakened for any reason.

Is patriotic fervour missing among the youth of India?

Mrs. Archana Nigam Principal, DPS Kalyanpur Kanpur, UP
1
Sixty Nine years of independence, India is still reeling under the shackles of slavery, terrorism, corruption etc. The very fabric of the definition of the word, “Patriotism’, has been changed. One’s patriotism is judged by the comments in Social Media. The feeling of being proud of the country’s diversity and the achievements which our fellow country men have earned, adds on to our definitions of being patriotic.
12
Young India is all enlightened and is raring to go places. Youngsters have become vocal of their thoughts towards different social issues and governance rules. Patriotism is inherent to every child, who is born in this country, and should never be challenged for proof, as far as one’s patriotism is concerned.
3
Youth, when equipped with proper education and mentoring can contribute positively to the developmental process of a society. Young India should be an asset for its country. Talent should be constructively utilized and retained by our country.
4
The stories of struggle of Independence needs to be enacted as short play by the students, so that, they start associating themselves with true patriots. Every class must have a monthly discussion

on various aspects of freedom. Feeling of patriotism should be instilled by inviting some eminent speakers from Indian Army / Air Force or Para military forces, who would share their enriching experience with the students.
5
Every voice whether loud or not, should be listened to • Freedom to express and voice one’s opinions cannot be denied. • Remedial measures should be in place for the ‘astray – children’ of our motherland. • Secularism was, is and will be our constitutional right and hence cannot be denied. Students should be involved to plan and celebrate the national festival and we must allow them to organize it. Motivational speeches by prominent people can enlighten the minds of the youth.

ndia is a land of diversity with rich cultural heritage, different languages, religions, arts and so on. In a secular country like India it is patriotism that brings us to be together and united. Patriotism is the love for one’s country and desire to make it better. It is our attachment towards our country and a noble feeling of our minds to devote ourselves to the prosperity of our country.
I
Whether young or old, being patriotic towards our country is our responsibility. We all have an immense sense of feeling that we belong to this country and the country belongs to us. So, the sense of patriotism needs to be infused and cultivated in the young
4
How can patriotism be developed in students? What initiatives can the schools take to infuse patriotism among students?
minds right from the childhood. Teachers and parents play a significant role in moulding and shaping the mindset in children. Children should be taught the value of independence and freedom. They should know about the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives to achieve freedom for our country. If the parent understands the value of attaining freedom, and do their bit for the country, they would be setting an example for their children themselves. Many feel that the spirit of patriotism is lost with time, especially in youth but the truth is different. The youth believes that it is the integral part of the duties. Youth say they don’t blindly believe

in being patriotic by following the normal practice of love for the country instead they say for them patriotism means to own up, to take responsibilities seriously and show love by developing the nation better in whatever way they can. Youth really play a major role in the nation’s development. The views differ as different people have different opinion. Please read on……

How can the mindset of youth and people be changed regarding national festivals?
We are proud to be Indians but any opportunity abroad does not keep us back in this materialistic world. freedom struggle, has been a lot of degeneration in our passion towards our nation.

Ms. M. Hussain Teacher, DPS Kalyanpur Kanpur, UP
1
Patriotism is an emotional attachment to a nation which is missing especially among the youth of today. We are proud to be Indians but any opportunity abroad does not keep us back in this materialistic world. We are all aware of the fact that due to change in our lifestyle, our present education system and the distance of the present day generation from the days of
2
Youth bring new ideas and energy to the pool of knowledge that currently exists. They lead to new discoveries and developments that can benefit society. So why can’t they express their feeling for patriotism and bring about a change in the youth of today. The ability of that youth to fully participate is inhibited by two main factors - education and religious position. The better educated the person is more likely to participate in civilized society.
4
It is the need of the hour that children who are the future of tomorrow be groomed in such a way that they
develop a feeling of patriotism and this is possible when children are exposed to the history of the country to develop a feeling of patriotism and by developing in them a sense of gratitude for those who sacrificed their lives.
5
A nationalistic feeling can be strengthened by bringing about an all round change in the country may it be education or elections. The people in power should be the role models for the youth.
6
People should celebrate the festivals with the same fervour or zest as in the past. Celebrating national festivals connects citizens to important moments of the nation and brings out the message of love tolerance and understanding. august 16

How can the youth contribute for the development of our society and thereby express their patriotism for the country?
1
Is patriotic fervour missing among the youth of India?
2
3
I do not agree with it. Youth who join the Armed forces are ready to sacrifice their lives for the nation, that too with a meagre remuneration. Patriotism is at its pinnacle during cricket matches and movies with patriotic fervour are great hits. The recent anti corruption drive by Anna Hazare attracted youth indicating that we need to channelize their energies in the right direction but probably they lack an ‘ICONIC LEADER” who can lead them.
2
Ms. Punam Gupta Principal, Maharaja Agarsain Public school Ashok Vihar, New Delhi
1
Nowadays, Patriotism is evident in the form of flag hoisting for a week around Independence Day and Republic Day. Although the love for our country becomes predominant during the testing times, the whole nation joins hands by contributing in form of cash and all possible ways to help the needy. So in today’s context patriotism is the love towards one’s country which evolves during adverse conditions.
3
Youth are the makers of tomorrow and we need to educate them with good morals and values to handle conflicts in a positive way. Youth must fearlessly take up politics, to give new dimensions to it, give sense to it and provide what the society really needs so as to achieve the dream of making India a superpower by 2020.
How can the youth contribute for the development of our society and thereby express their patriotism for the country?
4
We need a good educational system which not only educates the students but also inculcates national and cultural values. It is Each Teacher's Duty to Teach Patriotism. Teachers should initiate debates on various important issues, discuss the current problems faced and ways to overcome these problems, so that children develop questioning minds and also know the ways to find the solutions.
5
Good Education with Moral Values rooted in Indian culture at a young age is the only solution to develop and strengthen the nationalistic feelings.
6
National festivals have become holidays for all of us. We celebrate them only in schools and colleges. We can make these festivals ‘Happening’ by organising various competitions for children, community participations for elderly, not only in academic institutions but all over the country in working places.
1
The nation building effort of every individual is necessary for a developed nation and youth in particular have a major role to play. We, as youth can contribute for the development of our society and express our patriotism for the country by doing little things like just being helpful to people, voicing our thoughts as well as of those who are unable to and should work on to make things right.
2
It has almost been 70 years since India became independent and the feeling of duty towards the nation and patriotism that the generation at the time of independence had is not there among the youth of today. But I’d agree to disagree that the patriotic fervor is missing among the youth of India. The youth today doesn’t want to die for the nation but to live for the nation and contribute to its development. Though there has been a decrease in the patriotic fervor, patriotism still runs in our veins.

3
Being a student is no small job, the future of the country rests in our hands. In order to be a devoted citizen, besides studies, we have innumerable responsibilities. Education is the tool that gives us the power and make everyone around us aware of the happenings. We need to promote a green and clean environment and make our voices and our ability to question our power. These tiny steps from students can help to develop our country. Prageet Goel

How can the youth contribute for the development of our society and thereby express their patriotism for the country?
Is patriotic fervour missing among the youth of India?
As a student what do you propose to do for the development of our country?

How can patriotism be developed in students? What initiatives can the schools take to infuse patriotism among students?
5
Considering prevalent volatile condition in the society, how can the nationalistic feeling be strengthened?
3
Patriotic fervor is visible only when Team India plays with Pakistan or when there is a terrorist attack.
4
Nisha Gupta PGT English, Maharaja Agarsain Public school Ashok Vihar, New Delhi
1
Broadly speaking, patriotism is national pride. In the present day context with the stress on globalization, patriotism has lost much of its meaning.
2
Yes, without doubt. While movies like ‘A Wednesday’, ‘Airlift’ generate patriotic feelings, ‘patriotism’ itself is Oh – so ‘down market’. The youngsters see only the dirt and squalor, corruption and the non – existent law and order system.
1
Only commitment to give back to society can help achieve that. The government and the authorities need to work hand in hand with the youth, involve them actively in nation building. They are the ones with the energy, enthusiasm and the passion to change the world, so they can definitely help develop the society. It is fine teaching them about Bhagat Singh, Rani Lakshmi Bai and others of their ilk. For the young, that’s HISTORY. How about a lesson on Nandan Nilkeni – a man with an inherently Indian perspective or Verghese Kurien or the trio of Satya, Shiv and Sundar? -Inspiring stories would sway and drive the young and build national pride.
5
6
How can the mindset of youth and people be changed regarding national festivals?
Nationalistic feeling can be strengthened when the youth feels good about the nation. The youth is disillusioned and disgusted with the present scenario. Let us teach our young the virtue of patience, forbearance and forgiveness. Let us highlight them all the good around us. Exhibitions showcasing the grandeur and glory of Indians would generate pride and a feeling of honour. Here I would like to mention ‘Shauranjali’ that commemorated 50 years of the Indian Army, was a huge hit and filled each visitor with pride and gratitude for just having those brave souls around.
6
National Festivals are no more than national holidays. Yet, celebrating them in schools or the community is imperative. Celebrating them does produce a feeling of national pride. We need to reinvent ourselves so that people, especially the youth could relate themselves to these festivals.
I believe that the youth posses unlimited power to change the world. As responsible global citizens, it becomes our utmost responsibility to respect our culture and tradition alive and help preserve it.
2
Mahima Yadav Class XI, Maharaja Agarsain Public school Ashok Vihar, New Delhi
There is a great need to stir up patriotic fervour in the youth of the country as we are drifting away from our rich culture and history under western influence. Love for one's own country is essential for the society and the nation as a whole
3
The youth form a powerful workforce which should work towards national goals. Thousands of young people in the country are running successful operations for the betterment of India and setting an example for the youth to strive for. These people reflect the patriotism, youth have towards the country. Be it gender equality or poverty alleviation, such projects and operations should continue in order to enkindle the love for the country in the hearts of youth. august 16

Decorative Art (FLOOR DECORATION) hruti and Sudha were gearing up for Inter-House Rangoli competition to be held in their school on the eve of Independence Day. Everyday after coming home from school, in the evening, they were practising on the paper as well as on the floor. One evening during their practice session, Shruti said, “I wonder how has this art originated?” Sudha said, “I know a best resource person who can give us information about this.” Shruti asked who the person was.
S
Sudha replied, “My grandmother.” She has all the information. “Let’s go to her and find out!” The two went to the grandmother
and asked about Rangoli. The grandmother was very happy that these girls showed interest in knowing the history of the artRangoli. Her grandmother said India had rich cultural heritage with abundance of art forms including “RANGOLI”. It is a Sanskrit word signifying creative expression in colours. Rangoli is Indian traditional or folk art created on the floor on festive occasions. It is also considered as a symbol of ‘Good luck’ and hospitality. “Atithi Devo Bhava”, beckons at entrance of Indian homes. Rangoli welcomes the guests. This art originated in Maharashtra and gradually spread to all other States. It is known by different local names in different states of India, RANGOLI in Maharashtra RANGAWALLI in Karnataka MANDANA in M.P. & Rajasthan KOLAM in Tamilnadu MUGGU in Andhra and Telengana
The grandmother said that behind all the tradition and culture there was a story. The girls were eager to know the story about Rangoli art form. The grandmother continued.... Once a king and his kingdom was in great sorrow at the death of the high priest’s son. All, including the king, offered prayers to Brahma the ‘Creator of Universe’, to bring him back to life. Moved by their prayers, Brahma asked the king to paint a likeness of boy on the floor. Then Brahma put life into the portrait. Everyone was happy. Thus this art was born. Now, on every festive occasion this art is used to decorate the floors. Rangoli has not lost its charm even in modern days. Shruti and Sudha are now very confident, because they know the information to answer the judges on the competition day. The grandmother wished them best of luck and blessed them for success.

THE IMPORTANCE OF
Learn English e should know how important it is to follow the punctuation marks in the English Language.
W
A comma is one of the most frequently used punctuation marks. The use of comma in a sentence indicates a brief pause. The meaning of a sentence changes if the comma is not placed in a correct position.
18
‘COMMA’ IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Here is an interesting story… A man had a quarrel with his friend and killed him in anger. Realising his mistake, he confessed and surrendered before the king. The king ordered for his imprisonment. His date for execution was fixed. In the mean time, the king observed the man’s good behaviour and ordered his minister to write a message to stop his execution. His words were as follows: “SPARE HIM, NOT KILL HIM.” But the minister was careless with his punctuation. He wrote the message as follows: “SPARE HIM NOT, KILL HIM.” The message was misinterpreted and he was executed. Thus a precious life was lost because of the wrong position of the ‘COMMA’.
ACTIVITY TIME Place commas appropriately 1. Let’s eat grandma. 2. No smoking food or beverages permitted in the clinic. 3. We are going to learn cut and paste kids! 4. Learn how to cut marinate and cook friends.
Some of the rules to use comma 1. At the beginning of a conditional clause a comma is used. Eg: If I go to school, I can learn new things.
2. When you start a sentence with a dependent clause, use a comma after it. Eg: If you are not sure about your work, let me know now.
3. When the items are listed out, then comma is used. Eg: I went to the stationery to purchase a pen, a pencil, an eraser and a book.

INTELLIGENT and HARD WORK Always Pays
What do you attribute your success to? A lot of factors came together and made things happen-the constant moral support of my family, perseverance and round the clock support of my teachers, lots of optimism, self-confidence and a fair bit of hardwork on my part did the trick.
More than 11 lakhs students wrote the Joint Entrance Examination conducted by CBSE this year. It is a dream for each candidate to get All India Rank. Deepanshu Jindal from Delhi topped the JEE (Mains) and secured AIR 53 in JEE (Advanced). A student of SD Public School, Pitampura, Deepanshu scored a whopping 98.6% in his CBSE Class XII exams. It is amazing to know that even in his tight routine; he spares time for sports and social media too. Deepanshu shares his experiences to the Brainfeed readers. Read on..... In 1975, IIT Bombay started its annual cultural festival called ‘Mood Indigo’, which is deemed as Asia’s largest cultural festival.
You have opted to pursue Computer Science Engineering. What are your future plans? I plan to take up entrepreneurship in research and development after the studies. The picture isn’t very clear right now but I expect it to get over the years. Frankly speaking, I am still not sure about all this, I like to keep the options open and do things taking into consideration the practical circumstances and viability.
How did you make your study plan managing attending school and coaching classes? Even I have no idea how I managed to pull this off! I simply did what I felt was the right thing to do at the moment and what my heart said. I guess it is important to distribute time equally between the school, JEE preparation and also other activities. I always followed a flexible routine which varied according to workload and my mood. Things started becoming easier once studying science became fun-well it always was!
It is learnt that you have balanced your study without missing your regular sports and social media. Please comment. Yes, I guess what you have known is right. As I said, I did what my heart said (with a little bit of monitoring and discretion by parents) and once you enjoy what you are doing, it all becomes fun. Playing with my friends helped me bond and relax, and also all being with me in the quest for JEE, we ensured that things were in moderation. It’s important to de-stress after studying and let everything sink in. (That’s also a nice excuse for Too explaining Much of my excessive Anything use of social is a Bad networking :) )
Thing. What is your advice to the IIT aspirants? Obviously, all the aspirants would have already gone through lectures about time management and the need for smart work over hard work, so I will not elaborate upon that. Both of these are really important, apart from these my advice to those appearing for the exam would be: • Never be rigid with the schedules-Go with the flow. • Always introspect and prioritise – as one always knows what’s best for him/her • And also never follow everyone’s advice blindly (not even mine)practice your own discretion.

Self Belief and Hard Work
Leads this Jaipur Boy to Success In the highly competitive examination, JEE (Advanced 2016), on basis of which admissions to the prestigious IITs and ISM Dhanbad are granted, the first position was grabbed by the Jaipur boy, Aman Bansal. A meritorious student from Jayshree Periwal High School, Jaipur, Aman scored 96.2% in Class XII. Known as ‘Math Aficionado’ in his school for his keen interest in Mathematics, Aman never bothered about rankings and suggests students to take pressure positively. His long lasting dream is to make software and mobile apps related to education. Aman Bansal shares his experience to the Brainfeed readers…. Read on….. What is the success mantra for your preparation of any competitive exams?
(e) Maintaining proper concentration and patience during the exam.
(a) Regular studies – completely avoiding distractions as far as possible
Many students feel that they are burdened with the syllabus. What is your view?
(b) Proper and timely revision of the syllabus (c) Clearing every doubts by the help of friends or teachers (d) Practising good quality questions
The syllabus is actually very large considering the syllabus which we had to follow in our lower classes (till class 10th). The difference is very significant and hence
20

many students face breakdown when they follow such a large syllabus. But actually it is a matter of interest. When you have an interest, then studying this large syllabus doesn’t seem to be a burden. You have opted to pursue Computer Science Engineering. What are your future plans? My short term goal is to study hard in IIT Bombay and develop good engineering skills. After IIT, I would like to do something for my country, particularly in the field of education by the help of softwares. I have seen that there are many students who are not able to afford facilities like coaching, study materials etc, I want to do something for them so that they can get access to such thing like study material or mentorship. Whom do you attribute your success to? The support and motivation of my family, teachers, friends and blessings of God had a great influence in my success. My family motivated me at every aspect of my life and never let my confidence down. Whenever I used to score less, my family
especially my grandmother used to motivate me. Teachers always used to mentor me how to study and proceed so as to achieve success. My friends always used to maintain a competitive environment which helped me develop my skills and propel me forward in my preparation. What suggestions would you like to give to the IIT aspirants? (a) Always study in a relaxed way without any pressure or stress in your mind else you would not be able to make the best out of your time. (b) Have faith in your teachers and follow their guidance properly. (c) Learn the proper way of managing time during the exam, do not spend too much time in a single question. (d) Avoid social media except for discussion of questions or concept. (e) Stick to the syllabus of JEE and do lot of time bound practice.

Remembrance
Karuna Raj LISTEN
Nidhi, a student of class VIII of Navodaya vidyalaya, Delhi, was given the responsibility of delivering a speech on Independence Day. She was worried and was nervous. She sat to prepare the speech, wrote several times and cancelled it. She didn’t want to speak on the same beaten track. She wanted to present in a different way. Ultimately she decided to speak about the contributions of some unsung heroes of the freedom struggle. Here is her speach. On each Independence Day we remember great leaders, freedom fighters and the most popular personalities, but there are a few names which have been forgotten over the years in spite of their important contributions in the freedom struggle.
PINGALI VENKAYYA: He was an authority in Geology, Agriculture and he was also an educationist. He was known as Diamond Venkayya for his knowledge on diamond mining. His major contribution to the freedom movement was the designing of our National Flag, which was modified and adopted as the flag of Indian National Congress and later modified again to be the National Flag.
RANI GAIDINLU: Was a Naga spiritual and political leader. She led a revolt against British and tried to drive the British away from Manipur and Naga regions. She was just 16 years, when she was arrested and put into life-imprisonment by the British. Pt. Nehru gave her the title of ‘Rani’. She was awarded with Padma Bhushan.

TIROT SINGH: He was one of the Chiefs of Khasi people. He resisted the British from taking control of Khasi hills and sacrificed his life.
GOPAL KRISHNA GOKHALE: He was an outstanding intellectual, admirable leader and master politician. He was famous for his budget speech. He contributed significantly in annual budget debates. He protested against the evils and injustice meted out in financial policies by the British.
BHIKAJI CAMA: She belonged to Parsi community and was one of the great Indian patriotic women participating in Indian freedom movement. Her sacrifices are forgotten. She was a philanthropist and an active social worker She emphasized to establish equality between men and women. She went to Germany as an Indian ambassador in 1907 to hoist the Indian National Flag at the International Socialist Conference. She donated her assets and property to an orphanage for young girls. august 16

KORFBALL The Only Mixed Team Sport In The World Originated in the Netherlands, at the beginning of the twentieth century, Korfball not only gained popularity in its homeland, but also in surrounding countries. It was represented as a demonstrative sport at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp. In Belgium, The International Korfball Federation was formed in 1933, whose main goal was to expand korfball in all meridians. Korfball International Federation was officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee, in 1985 and was represented at the World Games. Korfball World Championships are held every four years, and only two teams had the honour to be up on winning throne. The Netherlands is six times a world champion and Belgium once.
Team
Field
Korfball is played by two teams of eight (four men and four women). The field is marked into two zones—defense and attack—each occupied by two men and two women from both teams, their movement being restricted to their zone.
Korfball is played in the open or closed field. It is played indoors on a rectangular field 131 feet long and 66 feet wide and outdoors on a field that is 197 feet by 98 feet. At either end of the field, a short distance inside the end line is a goalpost supporting a cylindrical basket (“korf”) open at both ends, with the rim of the basket 11.5 feet above the ground. The korf is about 16 inches in diameter and 10 inches high, and the ball is about 13.6 inches in circumference 425–475 grams in weight.
38
Rules • Two men and two women from each team occupy each zone, one team attacking, one defending. The ball is passed from person to person with the aim of trying to make the defenders dizzy and create a shooting chance. • Attackers can’t shoot if a defender of the same gender is within arm’s length, between them and the post. • It is forbidden to run with the ball and dribbling. • The player who receives the ball is obliged to stop the ball and pass it to his teammate or throw to the basket. • Kicking, punching, handing off, and running with the ball are illegal. Although no body contact is permitted. • A penalty shot at goal from a penalty mark 13 feet away is awarded to the victim of a major violation of rules. Points Points are obtained by inserting the ball through the opponent’s team, cart. After two goals, players move to the next zone: defense to attack, and attack to defense. Thus, players are thrust into a variety of playing situations. Time An indoor game consists of two 30-minute halves; an outdoor game consists of two 35-minute halves.

Write Right HANDWRITING SECRETS - 04 Y. Mallikarjuna Rao Director National Handwriting Academy, Hyderabad Email:handwriting56@gmail.com
Inside Your Handwriting
When you go to school or college or workplace, you wear decent, professional and formal attire. Can you imagine going to bed or for a morning walk in the same dress? Be professional and avoid careless strokes when you write for your teachers or to your superiors. It is a common practice that when you are in a hurry, there are few common mistakes which happens quite often. It leads to irritation and you are put little down in the view of reader. So, let us rectify all those issues and let us impress others with our written communication. It is observed that most of the times, because of bad sitting posture or poor pen holding style or weak support underneath the paper or book you are writing on, results in poor writing performance. In order to avoid this, sit with proper back support, keep your spine straight while writing; keep your books or paper on a table or on a stiff writing board; slant your book slightly towards left if you are right handed and vice versa; keep both your feet flat on the floor. These factors play an influential role to start correct writing. SPACING among the letters, among the words, among the sentences and before and after the punctuation marks matters a lot in creating very legible hand on a piece of paper.
August 13 is International Left Hander’s Day. Some famous left handers: • Narendra Modi • Sachin Tendulkar • Ratan Tata • Amitabh Bachchan • Bill Gates • Barack Obama • Prince Williams and many more.
BF HIGH AUG 16_Inner_Kala.indd 27
STRIKE OFF’S will either make or break your handwriting. It is always suggested not to make even a single strike off. But as it is humanly done, it is quite natural to get mistakes and you also get an idea to correct it immediately after making a wrongly spelt or written word/ sentence. This is the time one must be bit conscious while repairing the same. 1. Do not cut with too many lines and patterns. Just make a line or two on a wrong word and simply rewrite the entire word.
2. Never try to ‘DELETE’ or ‘INSERT’ a letter or word as you have those facilities only on your electronic devices, not on your manual presentation.
Time your mind a little in advance prior to writing, regarding the slant you have to use for your writing style. It is always up right for a non-cursive/print style and you slant a bit towards right side, if you are going ahead with cursive style. And never go for a left slant for either styles.
After all, it is your writing style, your spellings, and the kind of vocabulary you use and the content in it which makes people judge you. Meditate for a moment before you put your answers or thoughts on a paper, prepare all those factors psychologically first and start manifesting all those ideas in a right way and the world would put you high, always. august 16

Big Question

W h y Do W e Feel Dizzy W h en W e Spin?
to the brain that the brain is still spinning, which makes us dizzy. Eventually, this endolymph slows down and we return to normal. Now a question will arise in your mind that how ballerinas spin without any sign of dizziness? Ballerinas (ballet dancers) awe us by performing breathtaking spins without showing even slight signs of dizziness.
We have fun when we spin. Isn’t it? But after slowing down we feel dizzy and uncomfortable. Have you ever experienced it? Let us see why does this happen. n addition to hearing, the ears do another important job. Dizziness is controlled by the vestibular system in upper inner ear that is responsible for maintaining the balance of our bodies. Through this system, our body senses whether it is upright or lying down, or whether it is in motion or standing still.
I
In the labyrinthian structure of the inner ear, there are three semicircular canals arranged at right angles to one another. These canals are filled with a fluid called endolymph, which sloshes around as our body moves. This endolymph resists changes in motion, and due to the inertia of rest, lags behind, which stimulates the nerve cells. These nerve cells come in the form of small hairs, which transmit the messages to the brain. Now, when a spinning motion is initiated, the endolymph lags behind at first, and then continues to move at the same rate of
40

BF HIGH AUG 16_Inner_Kala.indd 28
motion. As soon as we stop, due to inertia, the fluid keeps on moving for a while. For that period of time, the nerve cells send messages
The trick is simple. They keep their eyes fixed on one point, followed by whipping their heads around rapidly when their necks cannot turn anymore. While the rest of the body keeps spinning, their eyes trick their bodies into thinking that they are standing still. In this case, the endolymph doesn’t have a chance to move around and alert the nerve cells to tell the brain that the head is spinning, so they don’t feel dizzy.
Facts In 2003, Lucinda Ruh, a former Swiss national figure skating champion, set the world record for the most spins conducted on one foot. She spun 115 times smashing the previous record of 60 spins set by Britain’s Neil Wilson in 1997. Ballet dancers use Pointe shoes that are handmade. Their toe boxes are painted or “blocked” with glue, then baked in ovens to stiffen and strengthen them. Some professional dancers can go through 20 pairs of ballet shoes a week; in fact, some can wear out a pair of pointe shoes in one hour. On average, England’s Royal Ballet troupe goes through 15,000 pairs of pointe shoes a year!
ACTIVITY Find out how figure skaters or ice skaters manage to spin with greater speeds.

ALLERGY ANXIETY onday morning Class Ten Tulip and Daffodil sections of Vidya Niketan School were hustling and bustling with excitement. Boys were the most excited and were eagerly waiting for Saturday as they were to play cricket match. Girls were discussing which team to support and cheer. Ganesh the Head boy was Tulip team captain and Kartik the Sports Captain of Daffodil team. Both teams were equally competent. Finally after much waiting and weeklong vigorous practice, the day arrived. The captains of the two teams called their team members to discuss the game plan. Ganesh was very upset and disappointed as the fast bowler of his team Venkat was absent, as usual due to sickness. Venkat would frequently suffer with stomach cramps, vomiting, face swelling etc.
M
Ganesh was worried as Venkat was an expert in taking wickets, he thought his team would lose the match. But fortunately Jatin the boy who played in Venkat’s place, proved marvellous. They won the match. After two or three days when Venkat came to school they all pounced on him for missing such a crucial match. Venkat was upset too ,but he couldn’t help. He said his parents were worried too by his frequent illness and took appointment with a doctor. Doctor diagnosed that the illness was due to food allergy. The Principal of the school thought that frequent absenteeism is becoming very common among students due to frequent sickness and so he invited a panel of expert doctors to give some health tips to children. The facts presented by them were astounding.

DESIGNING From Ideas to Reality
ewellery holds a very special significance especially in India since the beginning of the civilization. Women have always had an affinity towards jewellery and Indian women have adorned herself with precious jewellery, to enhance her feminine beauty. Jewellery these days is exclusive and contemporary. People not only want jewellery as a representation of financial security but to make a fashion statement and also as trends wear that suits different occasions. India is the biggest consumer of gold with 20% of world gold consumption and this industry gives employment to millions of people. How to enter the field? To join the Diploma course, the students need to have a pass in class XII from any discipline. Numerous short term courses are offered to students after they complete their class X. Prior to joining this course, a student has to pass an aptitude test followed by an interview. Career Prospects The students after completing the course can find excellent career options in jewellery designing house, export house, fashion house, freelance designing or at the same time opening their own production house.

Farah Khan Ali, CEO, Farah Khan Fine Jewellery Pvt Ltd, Mumbai, responded to the questionnaire sent by Brainfeed. What is jewellery designing all about? Please highlight about this course?
3D and graphic software is a very good platform to allow you to execute your design but before that, it is extremely important to know how to draw and sketch. It is also important to know how to visualize in 3D before using the software’s to create them. The graphic software allows you to gage actual diamond and gold weight thereby helping costing a particular product. 3D software also makes it easier to incorporate any changes at all stages and is definitely a boon in the industry.
Jewellery design is a course that involves putting together precious gemstones with precious metal and to design a piece that is not only beautiful, but outlives its wearer and goes down generations in time. There is a lot of hard work involved in this course with creativity, skill, dedication, focus and above all great passion. The current boom experienced by this industry has commercialized this art and opened new boundaries for job seekers. What lucrative career does it open to? To most outsiders Jewellery design seems very glamorous because it involves beautiful gemstones that dazzle and shine, but the fact is very different and this course requires great knowledge of gemstones coupled with manufacturing skills as well as distinguish between synthetics and simulants in the trade that are rampant these days. Besides that one needs to interpret the paper design into a three-dimensional life form because everyone’s interpretation of the same design can be very different. In the sense a designer may be seeing a certain form with a certain curvature, height and thickness, but the craftsmen see it differently. It is then the duty of the designer to sit with the craftsmen and explain what he or she sees. Also this line involves a lot of technicality, because great design is not about how it looks, but how it feels,
so manufacturing and finishing become a very important part of this profession.
The trend of the people is changing every day. How can the jewellery designer identify the consumer needs?
Trends are born through consumer needs. It is important to listen to your client and observe This course of study requires what people are wearing around a particular skill. What you. JUNO’S SPACE
After an almost five-year journey to the solar system’s largest planet, NASA’s Juno spacecraft successfully entered Jupiter’s orbit during a 35-minute engine burn.
ODYSSEY TO JUPITER Launched in August 2011, Juno completed an odyssey of billion kilometers to reach its destination, swinging once around the Sun and flying by the Earth to boost its speed before the long journey into the dark outer solar system past the orbit of Mars and the Asteroid belt to reach the King of the Gas Giant – Jupiter on July 4, 2016.
NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) confirmed Juno’s successful orbit insertion tracking data monitored at the navigation facility. The burn of Juno’s 645-Newton Leros – 16 main engines began on time decreasing the spacecraft’s velocity and allowing Juno to be captured in orbit around Jupiter.
2.8
The fifth rock from the sun and the heftiest planet in the solar system, Jupiter, what’s known as the gas giant - a ball of hydrogen and helium – unlike rocky Earth and Mars, is with its billowy clouds and colourful stripes! Jupiter is an extreme world that is likely formed first shortly after the sun.
46
Unlocking its history may hold clues to understanding how Earth and the rest of the solar system developed. Named after Jupiter’s cloud piercing wife, Juno is only the second mission designed to spend time at Jupiter. Galileo, launched in 1989, circled Jupiter for 14 years beaming back splendid views of the planet and its numerous moons. It uncovered signs of an ocean beneath the icy surface of Europa, considered a top target in the search for life outside Earth.
Juno’s Mission: To peer through Jupiter’s cloud-socked atmosphere and map the interior from a unique vantage point above the poles. Among the questions: How much water exists? Is there a solid core? Why are Jupiter’s southern and northern lights the brightest in the solar system? There’s also the mystery of its Great Red Spot. Recent observations by the Hubble Space Telescope revealed the centuries old monster storm in Jupiter’s atmosphere is shrinking.
Juno’s principal goal is to understand the origin and evolution of Jupiter. Juno will investigate the existence of a solid planetary core, map Jupiter’s intense magnetic field, measure the amount of water and ammonia in a deep atmosphere and observe the planet’s auroras. The mission also will let us take a giant step forward in our understanding of how giant planets form and the role these titans played in putting together the rest of the solar system. Jupiter also can provide critical knowledge for understanding the planetary systems being discovered around other stars.

Leisure LISTEN
There may be none who has not read or heard this famous story of the Aesop Fables. But how many of you have learned morals other than “Slow and steady wins the race”. Here, you have a new version of the same old fable with a twist to inspire you with novel lessons of hard work, consistency and teamwork.
The tortoise and the hare, by this time, had become pretty good friends. So the tortoise and the hare decided to run the last race again as a team this time.
The TORTOISE and the
HARE
They started off; the hare carried the tortoise till the riverbank. There, the tortoise took over and swam across with the hare on his back. On the opposite bank, the hare again carried the tortoise and they reached the finishing line together. Both the tortoise and the hare felt a greater sense of satisfaction than they had felt earlier.
Unbeaten
nce upon a time a tortoise and a hare had an argument about who was faster. They decided to settle it with a race. They both agreed on a route and started off. The hare shot ahead and ran briskly for some time. Then seeing that he was far ahead of the tortoise, he thought to relax for some time but fell asleep. Meanwhile, the tortoise overtook him and emerged as the undisputed champ.
O
We have all grown up with this version ‘slow and steady wins the race’. The more interesting version goes… The hare was disappointed at losing the race and he did some soul-searching. He realized that he had lost the race only because he had been overconfident and lax. So he challenged the tortoise to another race. The tortoise agreed. This time, the hare ran without stopping. He won by several miles.
The moral being fast and consistent will always beat the slow and steady. The story doesn’t end here too. Now the tortoise designed a different route and challenged the hare to another race. The hare agreed. The hare ran at top speed until he came to a broad river. The finishing line was on the other side of the river. The hare sat there wondering what to do. Meantime, the tortoise trundled along, swam to the opposite bank and finished the race.
The lesson learned- know your strengths and take on your competitors in areas of your core competency.
Yes, teamwork
is always effective. It is good to be individually brilliant; but unless you’re able to work with a team and harness each other’s core strengths, you’ll always perform below par. In life, sometimes it is apt to work harder and put in more efforts. Sometimes it is appropriate to change strategy. And sometimes it is relevant to do both.
The story still hasn’t ended.

The 1982 Asian Games that were held in Delhi were a prestigious event for India. I had to draw on every bit of my energy to regulate the traffic.
I was out on the roads every morning by 8, in my white Ambassador, which was fitted with a wireless set and a loudspeaker.
I held a microphone in my hand, to give instructions whenever needed, while being driven around the city.

10 During this period I worked 19 hours each day. I would return home exhausted and collapse on my bed.
13 As the police department had no cranes, I hired all those available in the city to watch the roads and tow away wrongly parked vehicles.
16 A Sub Inspector fined the driver and towed away the car, not caring that it belonged to a VIP. In fact, it happened to be Prime Minister Indira Gandhi‛s car.
11 In the morning, I would get up fresh and full of energy, ready to make my best effort again.
14 These moves sent shivers down the spines of all the drivers. They hurried into parking lots, as they were scared that ‘Crane Bedi‛ might come.
17 In spite of this, I gave all my support to the Sub Inspector for performing his duty.
12 It became a common sight for the people of Delhi to see me on the roads every day, clearing traffic jams. People loved it and welcomed the change.
15 One day, a car belonging to a VIP was found parked on the wrong side of the road. The driver was waiting for the car to be repaired.
18 This incident made headlines the next morning. There were many protests, but at the end, people respected me for being fair. The End august 16

Into the Land of the Unicorns As each chime sounds, Cara climbs faster up the steep bell tower. Eleven! She must be on the roof when the next bell tolls. Twelve! With a deep breath, and only half believing she will survive, Cara jumps off the church roof and into Luster, land of the unicorns. In Luster, Cara meets many wonderful creatures, but the most magnificent of all is Lightfoot, a rebellious young unicorn. Cara’s band of friends comes to include a hairy creature named the Dimblethum and the monekey-like Squijim. Together, they set out to reach the Unicorn Queen before the mysterious man who is following them does - to prevent the destruction of all unicorns forever.

Dog mania By Sally Trowbridge What is the number one favourite pet in the UK? If you think the answer is ‘dogs’ – you are wrong. There are 8.6 million cats and 8.3 million dogs in Britain according to recent figures. But experts predict that there will be more dogs than cats next year as dogs become more and more popular. Dogs as accessories We like to spend time with our pets. The Queen is famous for her corgis and is often photographed with them. Nowadays some dog owners are more extreme – a few TV celebrities even take their dogs shopping or to restaurants. Chihuahuas are especially popular as ‘handbag dogs’ because they are so small. Dog holidays People are also giving their pets holidays. Many UK hotels and holiday parks now welcome dogs as guests. What about owners who go abroad? They can leave their pets at a dog hotel or dog spa while they are away. Some even provide their canine guests with a TV. Dogs are for life

Victoria Sitwell is the host of the popular TV programme called ‘It’s me or the dog’. In the show Victoria helps dog owners with their pets’ bad behaviour. She tries to find solutions to problems such as a Dalmatian who thinks he owns the house and won’t let the family sit on the sofa, dogs that will only eat ice cream and biscuits and even a bulldog who uses the owner’s bed as a toilet. Yuck!

The British charity, Dogs Trust, finds homes for thousands of lost and abandoned dogs every year. Their famous slogan ‘A dog is for life and not just for Christmas’ was created in the 1970s to teach people about the responsibility of owning a dog. Dogs Trust told British people not to give dogs as gifts or treat them like toys.
