The popsickle stick book mark is an interesting and useful activity. Making innovative and creative book marks is a great fun. It is a good idea for presenting handmade gifts to our friends. I wish Brainfeed brings out more such interesting ideas. Navya Reddy, VII Std, Chalapathy School, Bodhan

LISTEN

WATCH

Now you can read as well as listen to your favourite article and also watch videos on education, career, sports, skill building, entertainment and a lot more. Brainfeed magazine started presenting a new concept – that is you can listen to your favourite article being read by experts while you go through the article. And also watch videos of your interest from the list of videos given in the magazine. This is how it works • A QR code sign will be given along with the article or the video. • All you need is a QR code scanner or QR code reader app on your Smartphone.

Prevent Reusing the Disposable Bottles We purchase water bottles, drink water and crush the bottle and throw it. The video ‘How to Prevent Reusing Disposable Bottles’ is really an eye opener to everyone. I was dumbfounded to see the people filling water in those used crushed bottles. The solution shown in the video, if followed by everyone, will really stop people from misusing the used bottles. T. Vishwasai, X Std, Ryan International School, Mumbai

Hot Wheels I have a hobby in collecting information about different types of cars. I was excited to see the article hot wheels and the details about the 5 best cars in the world. It was interesting to know the cost of each vehicle and the number of cars manufactured and sold. The lay out for the article is an added advantage for it. Vijaykrishnan, IX Std, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Chennai

• Download the app from Google play store or Apple app store.

Inviting reports from schools

REPORTERS

• Open the application, focus and hold the camera on the QR code of the article or the video you want to listen to or watch. • Then the QR code will lead you to the audio file of an educational expert, read the article for you or to the video that you wanted to watch. Don’t you think this is cool – so go on, read like an expert reader by just listening to an expert reader, read an article for you or watch a video to learn about an issue or topic or to learn a new skill.

Dear children, Brainfeed High is opening a new column exclusively for young student reporters. FOLK DANCES

OF INDIA ndia, a well defined geographical entity with rich diverse natural art and culture, reflects her diversity in different dance forms. All these dances are expressions of joy and gratitude. The onset of monsoon, harvest festival, Dassehra, Diwali, Ganapathi festival, wedding, or any happy occasion are celebrated with pomp and gaiety. Folk dances are off-shoots of these occasions. Both men and women perform these dances. The following are some of these dance forms:

I

BIHU DANCE

BHANGRA DANCE

Bihu dance of Assam is performed during Bihu festival. It is a joyous, energetic and rhythmic dance by both men and women with brisk steps, rapid hand movements and rhythmic swaying of the hips. They wear traditional clothing - dhoti, gamocha and chadar mekhala.

Bhangra of Punjab is generally performed during the vaisakhi festival to celebrate the good harvest with great pomp and fervour. It’s energetic, lively and equally vivacious. Bhangra was started by farmers of Punjab in the fifteenth century to celebrate good harvest but now it is performed on all occasions all over the world.

DANDIYA Dandiya raas of Gujarat is performed during Navaratri festival to pay homage to nine incarnations of Goddess Durga. Dandiya is performed in the nights for nine days in colourful attire, with coloured sticks. In two circles one moving clockwise and the other anti-clockwise with fast pace. Earlier it was performed only on traditional and devotional songs but now the modern version of pop music is also played.

KOLI DANCE The Koli dance of fisher folk of coastal Maharashtra devoted to sea god for better catch and protection. The dance reflects the distinct identity and life style of the fisher folk. It helps unwind a day’s hard work and forget the hardships of their occupation. The dancers form a single line or in pairs showing the movements of rowing the boats, waves and catching fish. Women wear green sarees draped to their knees and men wear lungi around their waist in a triangular shape.

10

KAIKOTTIKALI Kaikottikali of Kerala is an extremely popular and elegant dance, mainly performed on the occasion of Onam. Young and old women perform with ease and elan in typical traditional Kerala style, gold- bordered traditional two-piece cloth called Mundu and Neriyattu. The dance is performed in great co-ordination of clapping in unison sometimes moving clockwise and sometime anticlockwise, bending sideways, moving around intricatelydecorated flower rangoli with a traditional brass lamp placed in the centre.Rythmic movements are important than the mudra. Songs are sung in praise of king Mahabali.

Hillary became interested in mountaineering while in school. In his first major climb in 1939, reached the summit of Mount Ollivier. He served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force as a navigator during World War II. Hillary had been part of the British reconnaissance expedition to the mountain in 1951. As part of the Commonwealth TransAntarctica Expedition, he reached the South Pole overland in 1958. He subsequently reached

You can be just an ordinary chap, sufficiently motivated to reach challenging goals. Devoted to helping the Sherpa people, Hillary founded the Himalaya Trust which built schools, hospitals and transportation hubs in Nepal. He served as New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Nepal, India and Bangladesh from 1985 to 1988. New Zealand’s five dollar currency note features Hillary’s image. with a Mission

t is rightly said that a person with true determination will always achieve success in life. The same is the case with the India’s most active mountaineer. An adventure sports enthusiast right from his childhood, a motivational speaker and a nature lover, Arjun Vajpai, became the third youngest Indian to climb Mount Everest at the age of 16 on May 22, 2010. This enthusiast mountaineer continued

his expedition scaling different mountains achieving records. He attributes the Everest climb to his own dream, the drive of his father and encouragement of an experienced mountaineer and family friend. Arjun says, “I went on a mountain climbing trip when I was 10 during a vacation to the hilly outback of Pune in Western India to meet my grandmother.” An hour-long trek up a small

mountain and the sight of the sunset from the top made him wonder about gazing setting sun from the summit of Mount Everest. During his attempt to Tibet’s Mount Cho Oyu in 2012, Arjun’s left hand and leg paralysed due to bad weather but his determination towards his challenges led him to speedy recovery. On May 23, 2016, in his fourth attempt, he became the youngest Indian to scale Mount Makalu, the fifth highest mountain in the world and the sixth most difficult to scale with a death toll twice that of Mount Everest. He started the expedition on April 6, 2016 and succeeded to reach the peak on May 23, 2016. The Chief Minister of UP Mr. Akhilesh Yadav, congratulated him for becoming the youngest Indian to scale Mt Makalu, one

Cover Story Congratulations on your achievements. Please highlight your achievements as a mountaineer. I climbed Mount Everest and became the youngest climber in the world at age 16. In a year gap I climbed, the world’s 4th highest mountain Mount Lhotse and later on the youngest in the world to climb Mt Manaslu. I had three attempts to Mount Makalu, but couldn’t reach the peak. It was during my fourth attempt I succeeded to reach Mount Makalu.

spread more and more awareness about climate change and I want to motivate as many as individuals I can for this cause, to curb this. This is not only the problem of our generation but the problem of coming generation too. I have collected lots of data related to climate change. It is quite a radical situation about what will happen in the next 30 years. Now, I invite the young enthusiastic generation all over India to come and join me in August 2016, in this expedition, so that they will come to know about what is their effect of their everyday life on Mother Nature. A team of mountaineers went to Mt. Makalu. What was your experience with them and what did you learn from them?

You succeeded climbing Mt. Makalu in your 4th attempt. How was it different from Mt. Everest? Makalu is world’s fifth highest mountain and it is little shorter than Everest. There is not so much difference (about 500-600 feet), but the success rate of climbing Makalu is quite less. Many people have lost their lives climbing Makalu. Since it is challenging to climb, it is quite difficult to reach Makalu. The theme for your expedition was ‘Climb for Climate Change.’ What are your achievements from this expedition? From the time, I climbed Mt Everest, from that time, ‘Climb for Climate Change’ has come into my mind. When I went to Nepal, I saw glaciers melting, and then I learnt how my actions get resulting in changes. I want to

I was very lucky to climb with certain climbers. Out of them Ferran Latorre from Catalonia has climbed 12 out of 14 highest mountains in the world, from whom I learnt how to manage expeditions. What are the difficulties a mountaineer face during the expedition and how do they overcome it? When you are climbing mountains above 25,000 feet, there is water seeping into your lungs, your brain cells are dying, and your stomach is not well. As you climb up the oxygen reduces, when your body doesn’t get adequate amount of oxygen, you feel sick all the time. It is very difficult at -60°to -70°. We break up the journey up to the upper layer and slowly we reach the peak. Even if you are sick, the weather is bad, you are unable to walk, and then also you have to carry on. Keeping yourself motivated is required. One has to be very strong to achieve it with all the sufferings. Natural disaster like avalanches and climatic changes are a great discomfort for a mountaineer. Did you face any of these situations in your expedition?

You can’t say at what time climate change and avalanches occur. We did face lots of avalanches in Makalu but thankfully we didn’t come into one of them. It was a great experience facing these situations. You have observed that the two glacial lakes on the way to Mt. Makalu have completely dried up. What could be the reason for it? How can we overcome these types of situations in the future? The glacial lakes are unnamed and we call them TARN. The disappearance of the whole lake is an alarming situation. I have seen how the glaciers are getting warmer and warmer because of the direct result of our action. We are pumping out triple COC levels which the earth can’t deal. The climate change is due to lots of industrialization and so many vehicles around. We have to protect our nature and study the change in our lifestyle. To overcome this we have started outdoor training sessions where the children will come to the touch with nature. I am trying to bring changes in the young generation and educate them about conserving nature. That is the goal in my life. You said that Sherpas are the real backbone and the true heroes behind your success. Please comment. Sherpas are the special kind of tribes in the mountains and their body is able to perform much better at the higher altitudes. Without them our expedition wouldn’t be successful as they help us a lot. They take charge of the situation and help us in many ways. They have a great physical

appearance and are very good at heart and lead a satisfactory life. Sponsors have been a great support for your expedition. What kind of support did you seek from the sponsors? What support did you get from the Chief Minister of UP, Mr. Akhilesh Yadav? Sponsors help us in hiring sherpas, porters who travel with us till the base camp and also providing us lot of logistics and connectivity like internet and other technologies. Mr.Akhilesh Yadav, himself is an adventurer. He has been supporting us for a long time. The UP government has supported a lot for this expedition so that the youngsters of UP can also know about the changes happening in the nature.

Do you have any plans to conduct training for children in mountaineering? If so what interests should an aspiring mountaineer have? What could be the age to start with the training? I am already working on it. I and my team conduct training programmes in schools. Apart from that we have an online programme called 'ClimbwithArjun'. We select people across India and take them along with us to the mountain. In UP, I want to train young people for disaster management, personality development and develop lots of skills. We are going to start National Sports Climbing in Noida. Interested kids can be trained so that they can be an explorer and creative. There is no age limit for adventure. The kind of activity which you will be involved will vary according to the age. I have a team of 120 highly trained professionals who help me to carry out this course. We are also designing a curriculum which can be introduced along with academic curriculum. At a very young age, you have many achievements. What are your future plans? My aim is to complete the grand slam of mountaineering climbing the 14 mountains. It will take another 6-7 years to climb remaining 10 mountains. There are 14 mountains in the world which goes above the altitude of 8,000 m high. I want to become the 1st Indian to complete the grand slam of mountaineering. What message would you like to give to Brainfeed readers? Dream big and Dare to chase it! Climate change is a very important factor. Start taking action to protect our Mother Nature. july 16

Expert Talks

Mr. K.V. Pradeep Actor, Motivational Speaker

We will get confidence only if we know the subject; time allocated, target audience and are prepared. At the outset, one must select a subject that suits oneself, and importantly that is appropriate to the time/context, audience and occasion. We ought to prepare by accumulating knowledge on the subject; and according to the available time, we need to classify the subject matter into three stages of priority namely:

EFFECTIVE

PUBLIC SPEAKING

i) I must say;

Many of us have a lot of thoughts. In fact we articulate them in private conversations, but fail to deliver when we appear on a stage/dais.

ii) I shall say; and iii) Nice if I say. Furthermore, the speech or talk ought to be divided into three parts as follows: 1. Opening 2. Content 3. Closing

ublic speaking is an art. Speakers who can articulate their thoughts in a stipulated time, in front of audience are admired, appreciated and followed.

P

Many of us have a lot of thoughts. In fact we articulate them in private conversations, but fail to deliver when we appear on a stage/dais. We call this as stage fear or stage fright. Why do we have to fear the stage at all? Best Speakers most often transform themselves as Best leaders. In this context let us now look at the definition of a public speaker. Public speaking (sometimes termed oratory or oration) is the process or act of performing a verbal presentation (a speech), focused around an individual directly speaking to a live audience in a structured and deliberate manner, in order to inform, influence, or entertain.

16

Let’s know the ways to conquer stage fear: Stage Fear • Realise you are not alone • Experience reduces tension • Appear more confident than you feel • Let your nervous sense have an outlet • Involve in what you say • Smile and take a deep breath • Energy level is the key Qualities of a good SPEAKER • Self confidence • Passion • Easily understood • Accomplish the opportunity • King like vocabulary • Excellent expressions • Righteous thinking

We can compare the composition of any speech to that of a sandwich. The upper bread slice is the Opening and the lower bread slice is the Closing, while the stuffing is the Content. Just as the stuffing in a sandwich can be made of cheese, vegetables, meat, etc. the Content of the speech can delve on any subject. Of the total duration, one must assign 10% of the available time each to both the Opening as well as the Closing, and allocate the remaining 80% time for the actual subject matter or Content. Ms. Samhita, XII Std. from Oakridge International School, Hyderabad, is passionate about chocolates. She makes amazing chocolates at home. Recently she started her own company and sells homemade chocolates online through her website www.chocolatebox.in

World World

Day Ms. Samhita

What is the nutritional value of a chocolate? If you’re a dark chocolate lover, perhaps you’re addicted to the sweet treat’s nutritional benefits. Eating dark chocolate provides you with energy, fat, minerals and antioxidants to help maintain your overall health. These benefits come from the cocoa beans, which are roasted, ground and mixed with cocoa butter and sugar to form a chocolate bar. Check out the percentage of cocoa that your chosen chocolate contains; it’s listed on the wrapper. Keep in mind that the higher the number, the darker the chocolate. Is there any difference between white and dark chocolates? Dark chocolate and white chocolate both contain cocoa butter and are eaten as dessert and confectionery. Chocolate is derived from the bean of cocao plant which breaks down into chocolate liquor, cocoa butter and cocoa powder. Dark chocolate is produced by adding cocoa butter to sugar and cocoa powder. Unlike milk chocolate, dark chocolate does not contain any solids. White chocolate contains only cocoa butter, sugar and

milk solids and no chocolate liquor or cocoa powder. So technically, white chocolate is not really chocolate at all. Which chocolates do children like the most? As a teenager, I personally prefer milk chocolate because it tastes the best and doesn’t have that nasty bitter taste like dark chocolate. Children prefer milk chocolate too since milk chocolate is the most abundantly available chocolate bars in the stores. All the famous brands like dairy milk nestle and many more produce milk chocolate mostly.

Chocolate is derived from the bean of

COCAO PLANT

Chocolate Maker

Does eating chocolates affect children’s health? The health effects of chocolate are the possible positive and negative effects on health of eating chocolate. Unconstrained consumption of large quantities of any energyrich food, such as chocolate, without a corresponding increase in activity, increases the risk of obesity. Raw chocolate is high in cocoa butter, a fat removed during chocolate refining, then added back in varying proportions during manufacturing. Manufacturers may add other fats, sugars, and powdered milk as well. It is believed that eating chocolates affects teeth in children. Is it true? Chocolate has a good amount of antioxidants that inhibit the proliferation of a certain bacteria that causes tooth decay. This bacteria produces acids that affect the enamel in our teeth. The antioxidants in chocolate T counter the effects of this acid coun production. prod

BUBBLES e feel excited while blowing bubbles. These bubbles are visible for some time and later on disappear. Have you ever tried to blow a bubble inside a bubble? Try this experiment and have fun. Materials required: Warm water Sugar Liquid dish soap Pipette or plastic straw

W

18

Instructions: 1. Pour 240 ml of warm water in a jar. 2. Add a tablespoon of granulated sugar to it. 3. Then add 2 tablespoons of liquid dish soap. Stir it gently and allow it to stay for 24 hours. 4. Cut 1 cm from the bulb end of the pipette.

6. Now, dip the cut end of the pipette in the soap solution. With the other end blow a large bubble on the moistened surface. 7. Again dip the pipette in the solution, and now this time gently push it inside the first bubble and blow a second bubble. 8. Repeat the procedure and have fun. Principle: Bubbles form because of water’s reduced surface tension due to the soap. Hydrogen atoms in a

water molecule are attracted to oxygen atoms in other water molecules. Soap and sugar slows evaporation of water molecules, so bubbles can last longer. Regular bubbles burst when they come in contact with dirt and gravity whereas a sugar bubble will last a long on a surface, if the surface is free of dust particles. When you blow a bubble inside a bubble, the outer bubble expands a little. When you blow the inner bubble, the volume of the air in the outer bubble is fixed and becomes compressed by the growing inner bubble.

t is true, that space exploration is a very expensive investment, but think of the countless inventions and emotions that these amazing missions brought us. Today the inventions are still going on and here is one of them.

I

DSAC (Deep Space Atomic Clock) is a small atomic clock that could be used as part of a spacecraft navigation system. It will improve accuracy and enable new modes of navigation. The technology, which is designed to improve navigation of spacecraft to distant destinations and enable collection of more data with better precision, is 50 times more accurate than today’s best navigation clocks. NASA is preparing to fly a Deep Space Atomic Clock demonstration that will revolutionize the way by enabling a spacecraft to calculate its own timing and navigation data in real time. This one-way navigation technology would improve upon the current two-way

system in which information is sent to Earth, requiring a ground team to calculate timing and navigation and then transmitting it back to the spacecraft, thus expanding the network’s capacity without adding any new antennas or their associated costs.

Dr. Todd Ely, Principal Investigator for NASA’s DSAC Technology Demonstration Mission said, “The DSAC technology doesn’t really consume anything other than power. All these features together mean we can develop a clock

With one-way tracking, the Deep Space Network could support many spacecraft simultaneously without expanding the network. that’s suitable for very long duration space missions.” • The clock is a miniature mercury-ion atomic device. • DSAC will deliver the same stability and accuracy like ground-based atomic clocks for spacecraft exploring the solar system. july 16

• Spacecraft carrying DSAC would not need to turn signals around to get two-way tracking. Instead, the spacecraft could send the tracking signal to the Earth station or it could receive the signal sent by the Earth station and make the tracking measurement on board.

• Together with the DSAC Demonstration Unit, an ultra stable quartz oscillator and a GPS receiver with antenna will enter low altitude Earth orbit once launched via a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket in early 2017. high

How do Touch Screens Work? In today’s world, human life is associated with several types of technology and it has become a necessary aspect of a modern man and has the power to change the life of an ordinary man also.

what button is located under your finger, the software registers and performs the command.

hese days we don’t think twice before tapping and swiping the touch screens around us. Where ever we go we can see young and old operating touch screens be it ATM, mobile or laptop. But did you ever think about how a touch screen actually works?

T

There are two types of touch screens – ‘resistive’ and ‘capacitive’. Screens that you tap at the ATM or the automated supermarket checkout are called ‘resistive’ touch screens - they consist of two thin, flexible layers just barely spaced apart, with an electric current running in between. The actual LCD display of the device is located behind these layers. When you press your finger on a resistive screen, the top, flexible layer touches the bottom one, and the interruption in the electrical current is noted by the device, and it calculates the precise location of the point of contact. Depending on

40

The glass-covered screens on the smart phone are called a ‘capacitive’ touch screen. If you hold your smart phone in bright sunlight at just the right angle, you may be able to notice a grid of dots underneath the glass surface. This is an array of horizontal and vertical transparent conductive wires that form capacitors at the crossings, with tiny electrical currents running through. These transparent wires are typically made out of indium tin oxide, and are located on the opposite sides of a sheet of glass, which acts as

the insulator and is laminated to the top layer you touch. Human skin conducts electricity, which is how a capacitive touch screen responds - as you write a text, your finger decreases the charge at the intersection of the grid where the capacitor is located, and the microprocessor calculates which contact points are activated. This info is then relayed to the software, which in turn performs what you wanted - or, more likely, triggers yet another typo. Difference between Resistive touch screen and Capacitive touch screen

RESISTIVE

CAPACITIVE

Makes use of mechanical pressure made by finger or stylus.

Makes use of electrical properties of human body.

Has only single touch ability.

Has multi touch ability.

Made up of two flexible thin layers separated by a thin gap.

Made up of one insulating layer.

Responds to touch with slight pressure.

Responds to the slightest touch.

Children need plenty of water to stay hydrated and healthy. Water makes up more than half of child’s weight, and a steady supply is necessary to keep his/her body working properly. Teaching a child why drinking plenty of water is so important, can motivate him/her to consume more. ealising the importance of this situation, a Science teacher was interacting with the students about the importance of drinking enough water.

R

Teacher: Students, let’s start with an experiment that will continue for a week. All that you have to do is to plant two similar saplings in two different pots and water one plant every day and leave the other plant without any water. Observe for a week and note down the result. Students: Yes mam, we are very excited to do this experiment. A week later, the students explained to the teacher that the watered plant was looking healthier and fresh whereas the other plant was drying up. The teacher now explained to the students about the importance of drinking enough water.

THE SPACECRAFT FIRE EXPERIMENT:

SAFFIRE - 1

Understanding how fire spreads in a microgravity environment is critical to the safety of astronauts who live and work in space. Now a new experiment, designed, built and managed at NASA’s Glenn Research Center, will ignite an understanding of microgravity fire on a much larger scale. In the 1990s, Russia’s Mir space station was crippled when a malfunctioning oxygen candle sparked a fire. The crew on board ultimately controlled the fire and escaped unharmed. ccording to NASA officials testing fire’s spread for safety’s sake is difficult when astronauts are nearby, and this led to the idea for Saffire-1.

ever conducted. NASA has deliberately set a fire inside a Cygnus spacecraft, after detaching from the International Space Station for safety reasons.

A private cargo ship left the International Space Station on June 14, 2016 to host the biggest firein-space experiment

The fire experiment called the Spacecraft Fire Experiment-1, or Saffire-1 will gather information that should

A

46

help protect astronauts on long-duration missions. The Saffire I payload will hitch a ride on a resupply mission to the space station in an Orbital ATK Cygnus cargo vehicle from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. When Cygnus arrives, astronauts will unload their supplies, but Saffire will remain on board Cygnus. The experiments will be conducted away from the space station, and there will be no risk to the astronauts aboard. Each Saffire experiment will be remotely operated inside a 3 x 5 foot module, split into two compartments. One side of the module is an avionics bay that contains sensors, high definition video cameras and signal processing equipment. The other side contains the hardware required to ignite a large flame and burn the fabrics and materials inside. When the experiments begin, Saffire I and III will burn one large 16 by 37-inch piece of SIBAL

cloth, which is a blend of fiberglass and cotton. The SIBAL cloth will be burned from the bottom to see how the flame spreads. If the flame extinguishes itself, scientists will light it at the top and see what happens as the flame moves opposite to the airflow. Saffire seeks to answer two questions. 1. Will an upwardspreading flame continue to grow, or will microgravity limit the size? 2. What fabrics and materials will catch fire, and how will they burn?” The next iteration of the experiment, Saffire-2, scheduled to launch in June from Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, will set alight materials used commonly in space, such as those used in Plexiglas windows, astronaut clothes and storage facilities. These materials are intended to be flameretardant.

The Dissatisfied Devotee

Milk for The Mullah

Greek Mythological Story

A Hodja Story

Neptune, the Roman God of the sea was said to be one of the most generous of the Gods. One day a woman went down to the beach and began singing songs in Neptune’s praise. Finally the God came and asked her what she wanted. “I want a cow,” said the woman.

One evening, a man carrying a can of milk stopped Mulla Nasruddin Hodja in the street and said he had a problem and wanted his advice. “What’s your problem?” asked Hodja.

The next moment there was a cow standing beside her. The woman was thrilled. She began singing another song. At the end of it there was another cow beside her. The woman went on singing and every time she stopped for breath there would be another cow on the beach. The beach was small and so as the number of cows started growing it started getting crowded. Finally there was just enough room for her to stand. Yet the woman was not satisfied. There was a large rock at her feet. She felt that if she removed the rock there would be place for one more cow there. So she picked it up and summoning all her strength threw it into the sea. Unfortunately for her, Neptune himself was coming to that place at that moment to bestow his blessings on his devotee. The rock hit him on the head. The God was so angry he dived back into the waters taking with him all the cows that had been given to the woman.

“Milk,” replied the man.

“My problem is that though I never drink wine I feel intoxicated when I get up in the morning,” explained the man. “What do you drink last thing at night?” asked Hodja, eyeing the milk can in his hand.

“Just as I thought,” said Hodja. “That is the cause of your problem.” “Does milk cause intoxication?” asked the man, astonished. “It is like this,” explained the Mulla. “You drink the milk and go to sleep. You toss around in your sleep. The milk gets churned. It turns into butter. Butter churned, turns into cheese. Cheese turns to fat. Fat into sugar. Sugar into alcohol. So you wake up with alcohol in your stomach. That is why you feel intoxicated in the morning.” “So what do I do?” asked the man, bewildered. “Simple. Don’t drink the milk,” said Hodja. “Here, give it to me.” And taking the milk can from the man, the Mulla walked away, leaving the man gaping.

Designing a Fighter Jet

As a young boy, my friends and I walked back home from school at Rameswaram.

On the way, we often rested on the banks of our village pond.

While my friends practised skimming pebbles over the rippling water, I would sit and watch the cranes and seagulls soar in the sky. The sight of those birds inspired me and I dreamt of my future.

4

5

6

As I grew older, my goal became clearer. I knew I had to go into engineering to realise my dreams.

The Madras Institute of Technology, popularly known as MIT, was the best institution for technical studies in South India.

I studied hard to win a scholarship that allowed me to study in such a well-known college. But it wasn‛t until the day I entered MIT that I saw my goal standing before me. The MIT campus boasted of two large aircraft that were on display.

7

8

9

I remember sitting near them, long after other students had gone back to the hostel. I was fascinated by the details of the design and wanted someday to create such an aircraft.

For my final project at MIT, I was asked to design a fighter jet with a team of four other classmates. We had distributed the work among us.

One day my teacher reviewed my progress and exclaimed, “Abdul, I‛m really disappointed with your plan, I had expected much more from you.”

Take part in the monthly thematic contest and win free subscription of Brainfeed High magazine for one year! You are familiar with the missile man of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Even though he is not amidst us, his love towards the nation will always remain evergreen in our minds. Drawing inspiration from the picture story, make a ppt on “The Life and Achievements of Dr Kalam” and mail it to info@brainfeedhigh.com on or before July 15, 2016. The winner‛s name will be announced in the following month.

10 I offered several excuses but my teacher refused to listen. “Sir, please give me one more month, I‛m sure I‛ll come up with a better design,” I pleaded with him.

13 The next morning I just took an hour‛s break, ate very little and went back to work. On Sunday morning, I had almost completed the task when I suddenly felt a presence behind me.

16 Not only did I keep my scholarship, I also graduated from MIT with outstanding marks.

11 He looked at me and said, “Look, young man, I‛ll give you three days. If on Monday morning you fail to show me a better design, I‛m afraid your scholarship will be cancelled.”

14 I turned around to discover my teacher peering at my drawing. After examining my work, he patted me on my back and said, “I knew I was putting you under stress by asking you to meet an impossible deadline. I never expected you to perform so well!”

17 I had already accomplished my goal of successfully designing an aircraft and now I was drawing close to my dream of flying one too.

12 I was speechless. The scholarship was my lifeline. Without it, I would be helpless. I had no choice but to keep on working. That night I remained awake all night toiling on the project.

15 I had hardly slept or eaten in the past three days, but I now felt a huge sense of joy and relief.

18 It was amazing to think that just like the seagulls I had observed as a child, I would soon soar in the sky.

Feral children

© Mat Wright

By Andreea Pulpea Born to be wild? People have always been fascinated by stories of children raised by animals. Also called ‘feral’, such children have lived away from humans from an early age and have not experienced social behaviour or human communication. Fact and fiction We have heard the stories and seen the films. Mowgli, the boy lost in the jungle, was my childhood hero. I watched him taking his first steps outside the care and protection of his adoptive wolf family. I loved his adventures in an animal world filled with funny bears, curious monkeys and dangerous tigers. But how close are such fictional tales to reality?

Activity 3 Answer the questions below using information from the text. Who ... 1. ....... is a fictional character? 2. ....... was raised by monkeys? 3. ....... likes using social media networks? 4. ....... managed to make a full recovery? 5. ....... was found hiding in a tree? 6. ....... was only able to say three words? 7. ....... saw her son on TV?

Raised in the wild One of the first documented cases of feral children is Peter’s. He was found in the woods in 1724, aged 12. He climbed trees, ate plants and could not speak. He spent 68 years in society but the only words he ever said were ‘Peter’ and ‘King George’. John ran away aged 3 and was found a few years later (in 1991) hiding in a tree with a family of green African monkeys. He remembers the monkeys coming up to him, days after he had left his home, offering roots and nuts. His adoptive family were so upset when people came to take John that they threw sticks to stop them. Traian disappeared when he was 4. He was found in 2002 in a cardboard box in a forest. A pack of wild dogs had cared for him for three years. His mother recognised him during the TV programme announcing his discovery. Difficulties Like Mowgli, who found humans scary, feral children experience huge difficulties when they return to human society. Many have trouble learning to walk upright and show no interest in the human activity around them. Some may never be able to learn a human language.

Activity 4 Change the sentences below so that they start with the word(s) in bold and use a passive verb. Make sure the meaning stays the same. Example: Some people found Peter in 1724. Peter was found in Italic. 1. The monkeys gave John roots and nuts. 2. Sometimes people invent stories about wild children. 3. Some wild dogs cared for Traian in the forest. 4. A family of wolves adopted Mowgli when he was a baby. 5. His teachers describe Traian as an intelligent teenager.

Activity 5

A happy end for some

Do you know any other stories about feral children?

In the months following his return to society, Traian lost many of his animallike traits. He quickly switched from walking on all fours to walking upright. He is now 17 and doing well in school. His teachers describe him as a tall, intelligent teenager, who loves football and spending time on Facebook.

Do you think you could survive in the wild? For how long?

1. Although he never forgot his biological mother, he really loved his (..........) family. 2. He showed all the (..........) of a perfect gentleman. 3. Humans started to (..........) 4 million years ago. 4. Cinderella was my favourite (..........) character when I was a child.

Answers

Now complete the sentences using words and phrases from the text. Make any changes to the words that are necessary.
