veryday in the school assembly, when children repeat the pledge, ‘India is my country. All Indians are my brothers and sisters….’, there is a sparkle of patriotism ignited. At that time, teachers must remind children that patriotism is just not only feeling proud about their country but more value added to it. Patriotism is identifying with one’s country that fills loyalty and eagerness to help fellow citizens. Today’s children are tomorrow’s citizens. Therefore, children should develop true sense of patriotism at an early age!

story The
Greedy
King
Long ago, there lived a king in a far off place. He always dreamed of gold and wished to become the richest king. One day, an angel granted a wish to the king in his dream. The angel said, “O king! From now on, whatever
you touch will turn into gold.”
The next morning, the king woke up and he was very happy. Whatever the king touched, it turned to gold. Even the food turned to gold. Listen
Suddenly, his little daughter came running to him. The king hugged his loving daughter. Alas! She turned into gold! The king wept aloud, “Oh! Angel, please take the wish back.” The Angel appeared again and said, “O king! What do you want now?” The king said sadly, “Please take the golden touch back. I beg you to return my daughter". The Angel felt pity and took the wish back. Immediately everything returned to normal.

SKILLs
ocial skills are integral part of functioning in the society. Good manners, effective communication, expressing needs, being considerate are all important social skills. These are important to help children in each stage of their development. Three to four years children are able to take turns while playing games. They treat a doll or stuffed animal as though they are alive and initiate verbal communication with actual words. Four to five years are able to show more cooperation with children like- say, "stop", are more prone to tattling and pretend to be Mom and Dad in fantasy play. Five to six years are able to please their friends, say, "I am sorry", " Please" and "Thank you", understand bad words, are more strategic in bargaining, play competitive games and understand fair play and good sportsmanship.
How do we improve social skills in children? Teach Empathy Ask the child how other people might feel when certain things happen, or when you behave badly with them, substitute with different situations.
Empathy E -
Everybody needs somebody
M - Model and mirror P-
Put yourself in their shoes
A - Ask if you can help T - Treat others the way you want to be treated H - Helpful Y - You feel better and they feel better.

August 2016
Tell the child that it is important for everyone to have their own space to feel comfortable, like if his friend does not like to do something he is asked, should not be forced. Teach him to practice acceptable ways to interact with someone during play time. Teach the children the proper way of conversation, get attention or join group of children who are already playing. These situations can be brainstormed and discussed at dinner table or in the car on the way to school. To develop their attention span, pick up a topic- say three sentences, two related to the topic and one random. Ask the child to pick up the sentence that was off the topic. Ask him to differentiate between the two sentences.
Help children recognise facial expression by watching children friendly T.V. shows. Help them know different tones likeangry, happy, sad etc.
Teach children to play name games. Have them seated in a circle, give one child the ball. Ask him to name another child in the circle and roll the ball to that child. Repeat this till all the children complete their turn. Make them play 'Follow the Leader Game'. Ask the children to form a circle and make one child the leader. Now ask others to follow his actions or imitate.

They planted a field of sugarcane and sure enough, the elephant flew down one night.

Finally, it was the turn of the villager holding the elephant’s tail. “I’m going to carry back this many gems!” he declared in excitement. He stretched his arms wide and let go of the elephant’s tail.
The villagers all fell in a heap on the ground. They watched sadly as the elephant disappeared into the sky. “Don’t worry. The elephant will come back tomorrow,” said the villagers.
But Indra, hearing of the villagers’ trick, arranged for a sugarcane field to be planted in Paradise. The elephant never felt the need to fly down again. The villagers waited for many nights, watching the sky. But the elephant never came back down again.

The Ugly Duckling
M
any years ago, in a far off place, lived a mother duck on a farm.
Quack! Quack! Quack!
One morning, the Mother Duck’s three eggs hatched and out came cute ducklings. One egg was yet to hatch. The mother duck waited patiently. After sometime, the fourth egg hatched too! Oh! What a strange thing! Out came a grey duckling that looked different from the rest. However mother duck was very happy. All of them went around the farm quacking.
Quack! Quack! Quack!
As days passed, the ducklings grew bigger. The grey duckling was always teased by the other ducklings.
Quack! Quack! Quack!
One day, the grey duckling decided to leave the farm. It quietly slipped out of the farm and travelled to a far place. Finally, he settled on a river bank. After many months, the grey duckling, which has grown up now, saw some strange birds in the river.
Listen
“Oh! What are these beautiful birds?” thought the grey duckling. He swam towards the birds. Then he saw his own reflection in the water and was taken aback. He shouted joyfully, “Oh my! I look like those birds too.” Yes, the grey duckling was actually not a duckling but a swan. Now the grey duckling had grown into a beautiful swan! All the swans happily played in the river.

'bedtime battles'
and how to tackle them.
Ms. Swati Popat Vats
T
he most common and every day or rather every night problem that all parents face is putting their child to sleep. You are indeed a lucky parent if your child goes to sleep without any fuss! Most children resist going to bed because children are born ‘learners’ and feel that they will ‘miss out on the fun’ by going to bed and hence they fight sleep and try to postpone it as much as they can. And thus starts the “bed time battle” between the child and the parent. A parent needs to set a bed time routine. Because children like repetition and can identify with a
38
routine. So a regular bed time routine will help them go to bed without any hassles. A routine can be made keeping in mind your child’s likes and activities of interest.
your child nervous and also be a reason for bed wetting. So choose stories which are sensitive and happy and can bring a smile on your child’s face.
It is very important to keep in mind the child’s age while choosing the routine A toddler who has been hyper active throughout the day now needs to wind down before going to bed and hence doing activities like tickling; somersaulting, etc will only make the child more active and will not serve the purpose. You need to have soothing activities like a soft rhyme session or a hug and cuddle time or a short and happy story.
For a 3 and 4-yearold fear is an issue at bedtime. So they will need quiet reassuring activities at bed time like singing, reading or even having you rub their back. A soft massage accompanied with a lullaby is a guaranteed success with a hyper active or fearful child. You can even give a new body guard every nightthis can be a favourite toy or car. You can reassure your child by saying that “brave teddy is your guard for the night and he will take care of you”. For children who are
Stories are a favourite of all children and parents as a bed time activity Here again a parent must choose the right kind of story. If you will tell a frightening or scary story you will only end up making

afraid of ghosts-a ghost buster like magic dust sprinkled around the bed –this magic dust can be any chalk powder or glitter powder. (Your child should not be allergic to it and should be safe for the child) . It is very important for a parent to remember any routine has to be flexible and not set in stone. On certain days deviation may take place because of a social activity or a visitor or illness but regardless of the interruption, it is essential to get back on track as soon as possible to let the child know that deviations are exceptions and not the rule. Good night! Sweet dreams!
After a tiring day the parents just want to put the child to bed so that they can spend some time relaxing or both parents can spend some uninterrupted time together but pleading, cajoling or threatening the child will not help.
