March 2018

Each year more than 10 lakh trees are destroyed, mostly by humans. Today, the forest covers 30% of the total landmass on earth. But, this is quickly reducing. So, on the World Forest Day, we spread awareness about the importance of all types of trees and how we can save our forests. Every year, India celebrates a week-long festival of forests called Van Mahotsav from July 1 to July 7. During that week, people plant hundreds of trees across the country.

Mentor Speaks

Open house at your child’s school ...By Dr. Swati Popat Vats Some children learn and some fail to learn, it does not mean that they are ‘dumb’ or ‘duffer’ or lack talent. It only means that both the school and especially the parents need to work hard on tapping these skills. Here are 9 Navratnas for parents to help children cope with learning and failing to learn - (these are adapted from the Te whariki of News Zealand, a curriculum framework that I have worked on adapting for Indian schools and parents) 1. Communication - keep the channels open, and communicate, do not only dictate, criticise or chide the child all the time, listen and hear what is the child trying to say, even if it sounds like the same old excuse 2. Belonging - see that your child feels he belongs to the family even if he fails, remember to tell your child that you are there even if he does not get the marks that you expect, you will still love and respect him as much, you will be upset because you know he is capable of more, but you will be there for him. This will ensure that the child does not take drastic steps like lying to you, making changes in the report card, copying in the exam, or forging your signature on a bad test paper, or worse still run away from home or commit suicide 3. Exploration - don’t give up on a child that does not do well in school, explore all options of careers, something will work, explore 34

March 2018

seeking help from all avenues, school, teacher, friends, psychologist, remedial teacher, websites etc. (check out the website - allkindsofminds.com) 4. Family and community - don’t make your child feel like a misfit in the family or in the community just because he has not lived up to your expectations, this will make him a loner and lead to bigger problems 5. Empowerment - give your child the ability to be able to take his own decisions after thinking them through, with empowerment comes the ability to take both success and failure in one’s stride 6. Holistic development - everybody has some talent and as Winston Churchill said - “We are all worms, but I do believe that I am a glowworm”, teach this to your child too, find his success not his failure. Catch him being good sometimes instead of always trying to catch him being bad. 7. Relationships - your child must have a comfortable relationship with the important people in his life, his parents, his teachers and his friends, he should not be ashamed or afraid about any relationship, this will go a long way in ensuring the child’s success in life The end
