he best place for children to play and have fun is outdoors. Unfortunately, today children are confined themselves to play indoors. Parents must make sure that children get some place and time to play outdoors as it has many benefits. The unstructured and open ended creative play in the play ground teaches children different ways of life.
BENEFITS
Playing outdoors increases creativity in children. It also connects formal learning at school and informal play. Outdoor play is a multi sensory activity as children see, hear, smell and touch things around while playing. Outside play reduces anxiety in children and makes them more relaxed. As children make their own rules while playing, it helps them to find out what works and what doesn’t. This helps develop problem-solving skills too. When children play outside, they get enough vitamin D naturally. Vitamin D is very important for children as it works along with calcium in the body and helps build bones and keeps them strong. By watching the animals in nature, children develop the ability to learn and grow. Children work together to play in the playground. This develops team work among children.

could live in a place that every moment reminds you of a fairyland. No cars, no buses, no loud noises and no pollution! Just a beautiful and peaceful land in the lap of nature! There is a small village in Netherlands that gives a real feeling of fairyland. This village is known as ‘Giethoorn’. It is also known as ‘Venice of Netherlands’ or ‘Venice of North’. The loudest sound that you can hear is probably the quacking of a duck or chirping of birds. Whoa! The only way people can go around in Giethoorn is by special boats called ‘punters’ or walk over
wooden bridges as there are no roads at all! There are nearly 180 bridges and some of the houses here are 200 years old. Every year around two lakh tourists visit this place. How did so many lakes form here? Well! Long time ago this place was marshy land that was richly covered with peat. The villagers dug out the peat and mixed it in a vessel. Then they spread on the adjacent land to dry. Digging out peat created deep ditches and led to formation of many lakes over time. Later canals were made to connect the peat ditches.
The Name ‘Giethoorn’ In 1230 AD, the people who migrated to this place found countless goat horns. It is believed that long time before a great flood had caused the death of goats. In Dutch, a goat is called ‘geit’, they named the place as ‘Geytenhorn, which later changed to ‘Giethoorn.’
What is ‘PEAT’? PEAT is decayed vegetative matter, usually in marshy areas that collects over a period of thousands of years. When coal is left undisturbed for millennia, it turns into coal.

inding Dory’ is an adventurous action packed funny film directed by Andrew Stanton and Angus Maclane.It is a story of a wide-eyed blue tang fish named Dory who suffers from memory loss every 10 seconds. The one thing she remembers is that she got separated from her parents when she was a child. Dory with the help of her friends Nemo and Marlin starts the adventure journey to find them. Her journey brings her to the Marine Life Institute, a conservatory that houses diverse ocean species.Dory now knows that her family reunion will happen only if she can save her mom and dad from captivity. Finding Dory isn’t just a worthy sequel to Nemo but it also succeeds on its own as a rousing tale of

love and overcoming adversity. The film is full of humour and animation miracles. Dory’s determination to return home becomes a series of teachable moments about loss, parental nurturing, friendship etc. The message of this animated film is what appears to be impairments might better be understood as strengths. Deepest Underwater Mailbox

razy! How is it possible? Is that what you are thinking, isn’t it? Well, it’s certainly possible. That‘s where divers in Susami, Japan, go to post letters. Susami is a fishing town with a population of nearly 5,000 residents. Mail is written on a water proof postcard, using an oil-based paint marker. Then the divers wearing scuba gear dive into the water and post the mail in the mailbox. This is the world’s deepest mailbox 10 meters under water! Around 200 mails are handled everyday! The mail box is made of cast-iron. As sea water corrodes the cast-iron
box, the authorities use two boxes in rotation for every six months. The removed mail box is cleaned, repainted and kept ready for the next term.
The Idea!
Actually this amazing idea of underwater mailbox was proposed by the Post Master of Toshihiko Matsumoto as part of a fair in 1999. This fair was organized to promote Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail and its surrounding area in the southern part of Wakayama’s Kii Penninsula. As there was no special attraction in Susami, the idea was implemented and it was a grand success.

BIRDS 1
The Great Curassow Hoatzin
A very shy bird would fly away if it sights human beings. It is often found at 100 feet altitudes. Native of Mexico and Central America it thrives in rainforests. This bird can reach to a length of 39 inches and weighs 15 pounds.
River Kingfisher
2 It is a treat to watch the River Kingfisher as it dives into water and plucks out fish. It has excellent eyesight and is found mostly in Africa and Southern Sahara. While underwater, the bird’s eyes are covered with special protective skin that allow it to see!

4 Helmeted Hornbill

Like the name suggests, this bird has a wonderful beak that looks over the area with its head held high. Found in Malay peninsula, in the areas of Sumatra and Borneo between Malaysia and Indonesia, this bird is threatened by man who is after its beaks which are used in handicrafts. Another unique feature of this bird is it’s bird song that resembles musical laughter.
The Hoatzin is another pheasant-sized bird found in the swamps, mangroves and forests of the Amazon in South America. They are also known as ‘stinkbirds’ because they spend most of their time lounging on branches digesting their food. These birds have two claws on each of their wings, which they use for climbing trees and catching prey.

The Indian (or Sri Lankan) Frogmouth lives in India and Sri Lanka in the depths of the tropical forests. The bird is known for its ability to blend into its surroundings and has remarkable camouflage abilities. This kind of bird is called a ‘frogmouth’ because it has a very wide mouth and feeds on small insects, animals, and frogs. JULY 16

ne day, some children of a small school were eagerly waiting to listen to the speech of a scientist. Suddenly, the electricity went off and children were very disappointed. To the surprise of children, the scientist walked right into the middle of the waiting children and asked them to surround him. He then delivered an inspiring lecture to the children with his own and powerful voice. Can you guess who this scientist was? Well! He is none other than Dr. A. P. J Abdul Kalam. Dr. Abdul Kalam is popularly known as the ‘Missile Man’. He was born on October 15, 1931, at

Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu. He was a bright and hardworking student in school. He graduated in Physics and later studied aerospace engineering. He dreamt of become a fighter pilot, but failed to get selected in the Indian Air Force. He was placed at the ninth position while only eight seats were filled. This didn’t deter him and went on to become a great scientist and the President of India. On July 27, 2015, while giving a lecture at The Indian Institute of Management, Shillong, Dr. Abdul Kalam suffered cardiac arrest and collapsed on stage.

The novel was written by a famous French writer, Alexander Dumas. “The Count of Monte Cristo” is another popular novel of Alexander Dumas. Alexander Dumas was born on July 24, 1802 in France. His father was a French Army General. He grew up listening to stories of his father’s bravery in the wars. This created interest toward historical events. Alexander Dumas started his career as a playwright and wrote

many successful plays. Many of his works have been translated into nearly 100 languages and were adapted as films! He was one of the best loved authors of the 19th century ‘The Three Musketeers’ and ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ were originally published in the form of serials in the newspaper. In honour of Alexander Dumas one of the metro stations in Paris was named as of ‘Alexander Dumas Paris Metro Station. Alexander Dumas passed away in 1870.

ne, two, three…oh! Counting is so much fun, isn’t it? Each one of us is born with some basic understanding of numbers. However, we need to learn and practice the skills for working out with numbers. Let’s know some interesting facts about counting and numbers. Are you ready?
Fingers and Tallies Long ago, people started counting on their fingers to keep track of their herds and for marking the days. As humans have 10 fingers, we use 10 digits, i.e 0, 1,2, 3,4,5,6,7,8 and 9 to count. Oops! Do you know that the word ‘digit’ means ‘finger’! When people ran out of fingers to count, then they scratched lines and called them tallies. The oldest known tally marks are 37,000 years old!

Written numbers Written numbers were used for the first time in the East around 10,000 years ago! Different clay counters were used by the people to represent different things. For example, eight oval-shaped counters meant eight jars of oil. Initially, a picture was put on the counters. Later, people learnt to use counters without pictures. Thus, the picture that conveyed the meaning eight jars became the number 8!
Babylonian number rules Babylonians invented the place-value system about 5,000 years ago. They used base 60 to position numerals rather than base 10 as we do today. They wrote their numbers as wedge-shaped marks.
Egyptian Math Fractions help us to divide things. Egyptians started using the concept of fractions 4,500 years ago in a very interesting manner. For this purpose, they used the eye of a god known as ‘Horus’. Each part of eye stood for a different fraction.
Greek Math
Modern Math Slowly, the ideas of Greeks about numbers became popular leading to advent of new mathematical concepts and developments in the Middle East and India.
It seems Greeks were very good with numbers. They started developing math that was more similar to math we do. They not only had brilliant ideas about numbers and symbols, but they went ahead and proved that their ideas were true. Today, we still follow the Greek Mathematician, Euclid’s ideas of geometry and of course Pythagoras theorem too!

Tucket was the saddest bucket in the world. He had once been a garden favourite and the gardener used to swing him by his strong handle as he went to fetch water. “What a good bucket,” he said.

But as time passed, Tucket the bucket got a hole. Suddenly he was useless. What good is a bucket with a hole?

Sometimes he even got kicked around. “I should throw that bucket away,” the gardener muttered.

Tucket was tossed into the corner of the garden. He was left out in the rain and the sun, and began to rust.
“Don‛t worry Tucket,” they chirped soothingly. Tucket really tried to be happy but it was very, very hard.
Tucket didn‛t want to be thrown away. He felt very sad. The squirrels set him back up when he was kicked down, and the birds cheerfully flapped about him.
One day, a little girl ran through the garden and stopped in front of Tucket.

He sighed and waited for the usual kicks when suddenly he heard “Perfect!”
Soon he found himself blinking and spluttering under the garden hose. The girl was cleaning him! He felt heavy chunks of rust fall off and his spirits brightened.

Kids… to write easily and beautifully like your teachers and parents, the very first step to take is to learn to hold your pencil in a right way. Do not hold your pencil very close to its tip or in the middle of it. You need to leave only 1 inch distance from its tip and hold it. Hold your pencil immediately after the ‘CONE’ shape, what you get after sharpening the pencil.

Avoid holding your pencil with more or less than 3 fingers. Hold it only with thumb, index finger and middle fingers. This is called ‘Tripod Grasp’. Carry a ‘Triangular Pencil’ to facilitate a better Pencil Grasp.
When you hold your pencil, see that you are not opening little finger and ring finger. Make sure that your pencil is always slanted while writing (never in a vertical position). It should be resting at the backside …. in between the ending points of thumb and index fingers.
