There shouldn’t be any difficulty going through the pages as we have curated the edition keeping the children’s age group in mind. The magazine comes with a ‘word finder’ for terms that are not yet in children’s memory. We have also incorporated a ‘Did you know?’ section, for children to take interest in the topics! I hope you find the magazine interesting! Keep reading.

We have heard a saying that an apple a day keeps the doctor

away but do you know that an egg a day can also do wonders in your life? Yes, an egg is a powerhouse of nutrients and a super food packed with high quality proteins, amino acids, and vitamins that keeps one healthy. Children are fond of a variety of egg dishes from scrumptious egg omelette to eggs benedict. from painting and colouring egg shells to playing egg related games. Eggs are considered the healthiest food worldwide and the essential dairy product for children’s brain growth and body. To make people aware of the significance of eggs and its nutritional value, National Egg Day is celebrated every year on June 3 in the United States with great fervour and gusto. It commenced in 1921 in Washington D.C., where a highway was constructed precisely to carry eggs and other dairy products. Malnutrition is a common problem in children and consumption of eggs in their daily diet can solve this problem. Eggs can be eaten at any time of the day, with any meal, one gets charged with lots of proteins and energy for the day’s tasks.

The Red Panda Network is an organization that protects Red pandas and their habitat.

The

adorable Red Panda, also known as the ‘Lesser Panda’, is a small mammal that is slightly bigger in size than a domestic cat! Red pandas have a unique and distinctive appearance, which make them easily recognizable. They have a reddish brown coat on the top of their bodies and typically have white fur around their faces, while their black fur covers the rest of their bodies. This special colour combination helps them camouflage from the dangerous predators around. This lovable panda is found in the Eastern Himalayas like Bhutan, China, Nepal, and even the Northern Mountains of Myanmar. Since they are fond of bamboo, sweet fruits, insects, and birds, they mostly spend their time on trees. While the whole world loves and honours red pandas, it is unfortunate that the species is endangered and there are less than 1O,OOO left in the world today. Their major threats are poaching, loss of habitat, and a poor bamboo diet. 9

Once upon a time, somewhere in a ruthless city, lived a young boy

who was very poor. He sold newspapers for a living. After paying for his school and books, he hardly had anything to buy food with! He often got hungry but he never complained. Once while delivering newspapers he felt very hungry as he hadn’t eaten in days. He didn’t have parents to feed him, nor generous siblings who offered any help. He went door to door begging for food! Nobody gave him anything, and were unnecessarily rude. One day he stumbled upon a beautiful girl and asked for some water. But looking at the sickly condition of the boy, she offered him some porridge and a glass of milk. The boy devoured the food and thanked the girl for her help. Years later, the girl who had offered the little boy the porridge and the milk fell extremely sick. The lady didn’t have much money to offer. So all the doctors in the city refused to cure her! Disappointed, she thought of visiting a great doctor everybody was talking about. She had already heard of the doctor’s kindness, and decided to visit him. The doctor treated her very well and cured her of all her illnesses. When the woman asked the doctor how much she owed him, the doctor said, paid with a glass of milk and a bowl of porridge!

WHY BIRDS HAVE FEATHERS AND BATS FLY WITHOUT WINGS

Bats have fur. It gives birth to the young ones and produces milk to feed their babies. It has sharp teeth with jaw bones. Tests by scientists and researchers have proven that bats have three fingers on which the skin is stretched, facilitates a better range of motion, flexibility in bat finger joints for flying and scores of hyper-sensitive hair help them discover changes in breeze and air currents.

It uses highly- flexible skin membranes on their elongated fingers for flying.

Birds only have feathers.

It lays eggs and searches for food to nurse their babies. It has no teeth but beaks. It flaps and uses rigid feather wings to fly.

W e all know that birds are the only living animals with feathers and bats are the only mammals that can truly fly minus the feather, which makes it a peculiar creature on earth.

We might have had at some point, walked through the forests or zoos and might have gazed at the wonderful sights and movements of birds and bats. You might have observed and noticed the differences in the way they take flight and use their wings. 15

POEM Poem

Every other evening,

I go to spend some time with Grandpa. He receives me with a warm greeting, And tells me stories about his life with Grandma When I was four, he’d teach me rhymes, And now, he teaches me to be brave. I feel like giving up, sometimes. Then, it’s his wisdom I crave. Tales of his army days as a major, Warning us to never give up, everThey inspire me to fight for my country’s honour, And like him, be fearless and clever. Sometimes, he feels a little lonely But never lets us get the drift. His hugs feel happy and homely, Every minute with him is a gift!

Inspire: to encourage

We should spend more time with our grandparents and elders, and learn from them. June 22

THE SONGKRAN

SPLASH!

To celebrate the beginning of a New Year

If you step out during the Songkran days, you will be sure to get attacked with water!

and make spring-cleaning fun, let’s have a water festival! This is what people do in Thailand when they celebrate the Songkran Festival. This festival marks the beginning of the Thai New Year and is usually celebrated from April 12 to 16.

Events are held all over Thailand to celebrate Songkran - including parades, exhibitions, dances, boat races and traditional beauty pageants- like the Miss Songkran Contest. Families get together, do their spring cleaning, visit temples, and splash water at each other.

Songkran is all about making a fresh start. It has been a long-standing custom to splash water on family members and friends, and this tradition has now turned into the biggest water festival in the world! Why, you ask? Splashing water is a symbol of washing away the previous year and welcoming the new year, with a clean slate. It signifies cleansing.

In 194O, January 1 was fixed as the official New Year and Songkran turned into a national holiday and important summer festival.

Custom: habitual practice Splashing: to scatter liquid

The word ‘Songkran’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Sankranti’ which means ‘movement of the sun.’ 19

FASCINATING DISCOVERY OF THE

“GOLD STANDARD” STAR! In the glorious Milky Way galaxy, which is where the Sun lies,

a new star has been discovered, and it’s really fascinating, because it consists of 62 whole elements, and that’s the highest number of elements ever found in any object outside the solar system! The discovery of the star, which has been named HD222925, is very special because it has broken the records of the number of elements found in the magnificent solar system. According to this research, led by astronomer Ian Roederer, forty two of the total elements found belong to the periodic table! The elements found in this unique star include platinum, silver, thorium and tellurium, all of which are rarely ever found in any other star! It has also been mentioned that The Gold Standard Star is relatively bright. The mysterious Milky Way consists of several objects that are captivating, and exploring the space always leaves us in wonder of the amazing things that lie beyond us!

One autumn day, Windy, the tiger, had an argument with

Pony. Windy was proud and said out loud, “I’m stronger than you.” Pony said, “Not unless I’m dead.” They saw a passerby in a muffler. Windy suggested that whoever takes off the traveller’s muffler is the strongest. Pony agreed and asked Windy to proceed. Windy raged, but the traveller’s grip on the blanket grew. Windy raged harder and the traveller held to his blanket tighter. It was Pony’s turn. He smiled at the traveller gently. The traveller made his grip on the grey scarf lighter. Pony smiled some more. Feeling Pony’s warmth, the traveller took the muffler off his shoulder. Pony hopped on the traveller’s shoulders and gaily danced a li’l. Kind way is the best way, kids.
