THE SHOW

Must Go On B R A N S O N TA K E S C E N T E R S TAG E

BIGGER THAN LIFE PRODUCTIONS The stars shine a little brighter in Branson. In 1991, CBS’s 60 Minutes proclaimed Branson to be the “Live Music Show Capital of the Universe.” Since then, the awe-inspiring production values, talent roster of legendary stars and pitchperfect showmanship have continued to blossom, securing the city its place among the fans. Featuring more than 100 live shows — including favorites that stretch back generations — Branson offers a wide variety of genres to select from. While the town will always tip its hat to country, there’s no need to limit your ticket buys. Visitors may show up ready to rock ‘n’ roll, swing with the big bands or get down with the blues. Maybe they prefer to belt out Broadway tunes, hear soulful gospel or even watch Top 40 hits come to life. Touring shows, family acts, comedians, dancers and even international ensembles dazzle on the stages of Branson. And with showtimes throughout the day and into the night, the question changes from what do you want to see to when do you want to see it?

16

Branson’s journey to become a globally recognized showstopper began with an outdoor production at The Shepherd of the Hills, based on the 1907 bestselling novel by minister Harold Bell Wright. Still popular today and known simply as The Shepherd of the Hills Outdoor Drama, this larger-than-life production has more than 90 performers acting alongside horses, sheep, mules and even a burning log cabin. shoot-outs and the timeless struggle of good vs. evil play on, enchanting new generations as they peer through this vibrant window to the past. Heralded by many as the greatest story of all time, come witness the life of Jesus Christ played out on one of the world’s biggest stages. Sight & Sound Theatre is the most famous Christian theater in the world, dedicated to bringing the Bible to life with resplendent imagery and epic storytelling. The productions are state-of-theart and staggering in detail. A 300-foot stage surrounds the audience, emotional musical

scores are original compositions and live animals, ranging from horses to sheep, interact with more than 50 cast members. The 2021 show, Jesus, follows Christ’s journey from humble beginnings to his miraculous resurrection and emergence as the Son of God.

SHOW BUSINESS IN THEIR GENES Of course, that’s not the only show that has proven star power. Presleys’ Country Jubilee, one of Branson’s longest running family acts, has been charming Ozark audiences with traditional songs, famously clean and side-splitting comedy

and uplifting gospel for four generations. The show began with humble roots, playing in Ozark caverns before the family outgrew the venue and built a full-fledged theater on Hwy. 76 in 1967. Come see for yourself what the fuss is all about and discover the magic of the Presley clan, a group once described by the Washington Post as having “honey voices and guitar pickers hot as Tabasco.”

THE SHOW BEGAN WITH HUMBLE ROOTS, PLAYING IN OZARK CAVERNS BEFORE THE FAMILY OUTGREW THE VENUE

Next, it’s time to meet the Baldknobbers, founded by the Mabe family. This country music and comedy variety show is celebrating a jaw-dropping 61 years on the stage. Now three generations deep, they wow with fun-for-the-whole-family country hits and traditional Ozark melodies with a few deep-belly laughs thrown in for good measure. Make their family legacy part of your own and head to the new Branson Famous Theater to see why they’ve been receiving standing ovations since 1959. You may have first seen them on America’s Got Talent, but

vocals and drawn-out guitar riffs accompanied by flashy smoke and set design. An ode to the greats, you’ll hear some of the biggest rock hits of the 20th century, lined up to create a flawless production that plays like a love letter to rock ‘n’ roll.

ARE YOU READY TO ROCK? It’s the rock show line-up of your dreams. The sounds of Queen, The Beatles, Aerosmith, Journey, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and still more greats combine to bring down the house in Branson’s rock-solid tribute to rock ‘n roll, Anthems of Rock.

Of course, there is one true king of rock ‘n roll, and it’s only right to give him his very own show. Enter Dean Z, in The Ultimate Elvis now showing at Clay Cooper Theater.

The show is King’s Castle Theatre’s newest production, an energetic blur of talent supported by seamless choreography, powerhouse

worked closely with Presley’s estate to recreate all 20 years of Elvis’ career. Audience members will see iconic moments of “the King” come to life on stage and hear classics such as “A Little Less Conversation,” “All Shook Up” and “Jailhouse Rock.” Accompanied by his 10-piece band, you’re in for a rocking good time as you relive the reign of the King. There are so many types of shows, it’s easy to find one that’s in tune with you and your family. VARIETY SHOWS Combine singing and dancing with humor and storytelling, and you’ve got the recipe for a Branson show. These familyfriendly performances include giant production numbers, tender ballads and comic relief that will keep you chuckling well into the night. Check out the talent at some of these such as SIX, Doug Gabriel’s #1 Hits Tribute Show, The Duttons, Hughes Music Show, The Haygoods and Hamners’ Unbelievable Variety Show. DECADE SHOWS Make your show experience a time-traveling affair when you see one of the decade shows. Enjoy rock hits of the 1950s through 1980s, tributes to pop

and country music legends, and iconic moments in music when you see shows that shine a spotlight on musical history. Hear some of the classics at Legends in Concert, Motown Downtown, Anthems of Rock, and Pierce Arrow to enjoy the best music of the decades. GOSPEL SHOWS Many Branson shows have a spiritual component, where musicians take time to reflect on the blessings in their lives and share their stories of tragedy and triumph. They’ll wow you with rousing gospel numbers and help you find a moment of peace with those powerful hymns. You can seek out those old time favorites and new worship music at Ozarks Gospel, New South, The Blackwoods, and JESUS. UNEXPECTED SHOWS The talented magicians and illusionists found on many Branson stages will amaze you with their elaborate and jaw-dropping talent. Offering

family fun for ages 2 to 102, magic is in the air at many shows. You never know what to expect when you see REZA ‘Edge of Illusion’, Amazing Pets or Illusionist Rick Thomas. Janice Martin is the world’s only aerial violinist and her incredible work on the silks will astound you. DINNER SHOWS Consider this Branson spin on the old “dinner and a movie” date night. Many Branson performances serve up great entertainment at dinner time, which is a win-win situation for you. A savory meal always pairs well with world-class entertainment. MAKE A SPLASH Do you dream of sun, sparkling waters and sunscreen-soaked days at the lake? Head to Table Rock, Taneycomo or Bull Shoals to dive into a world of watersports, world-class fishing and boating designed to suit every style. These pristine lakes are easily accessible, and visitors can even choose to stay at luxurious lakeside resorts, house rentals or well-equipped campgrounds. But no matter where you choose to check-in, the lake offers many activities to check out. Head to State Park Marina, where you can find a huge

variety of rentals, including boats, wave runners, slips and even bicycles and fishing supplies. The premier slide boat is a favorite among families and comes with a double-decker slide to launch users into the lake. Or maybe you’d like to rent a ski boat and feel it roar to life for an adrenaline-pumping day of waterskiing, wakeboarding, and kneeboarding. You’re also able to rent canoes and paddle boats, but if you prefer to sit back and enjoy the ride, you can sign up for boat tours that come with a USCG-licensed captain to ferry you around the lake before

returning safely to shore. For a relaxing and rejuvenating activity that tests your physical prowess while boosting your inner-self, ask the State Park Marina about paddleboarding. While it may provide a fullbody workout, you’ll be too entranced by the serenity of

your surroundings and the soft dip of your paddle in the water to notice. This is one of the few watersports that requires little to no training, just good balance (although classes and tours are still the best way to master the craft), and that welcomes participants of all ages.

TAKE THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED The vast wilderness of the Ozarks has beckoned explorers for generations, with each new wave carving out paths that would become beloved trails and campgrounds. The Branson area offers more than 200 miles of these trails, perfect for hiking, biking and even horseback riding. They stretch across a collection of publicly accessible city, state and federal forests, as well as parks and conservations, like the 1,574-acre Ruth and Paul Henning Conservation Area that draws in wildlife lovers from around the country. You’ll have your pick of terrains, be it river or lakeside, grassy knolls, shaded forests or rocky hillsides. There are even caves to (carefully) explore, should you feel like trying your hand at spelunking. No matter your skill level, hikers and cyclists will appreciate the wide variety of trails available. You can find flat, paved paths— like the 2.2-mile Table Rock Lakeshore Trail—that allow for even the smallest cyclists to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. Perhaps you’ll take on a rugged mountain bike adventure in the White River Valley. Or maybe you’ll don your

trusted backpack and hiking boots and set off on the popular Piney Creek and Hercules Glades Wilderness trails. Up on Wolfe Mountain, you can even plan to add some zip to your trip and soar through the wilderness with Branson Zipline Canopy Tours. The choice is yours, and the possibilities are nearly endless.

Branson turns into a winter wonderland in November and December with live Christmas shows, a festival and lots of holiday decor. America’s Christmas Tree City has miles of lights extending out of the heartland as a warm beacon to travelers across the nation. It is truly a magical place to be during the Christmas season.

One of the nation’s most acclaimed holiday festivals, An Old Time Christmas at Silver Dollar City features Joy On Town Square with an 8-story LED special-effects Christmas tree, the Christmas in Midtown Light Spectacular, Rudolph’s Holly Jolly™ Christmas Light Parade, two Broadway-style Christmas productions and nearly seven million lights. Awarded #1 “Best Theme Park Holiday Event” for four years by USA Today/10Best readers’ poll. Take the family to one of the drive-through light displays: Branson’s Lights of Joy will be shining super LED bright with

hundreds of scenes featured, near Sight & Sound Theatres; Let There Be Lights at Promised Land Zoo is the largest drivethrough display in the Ozarks and has a Living Nativity with real live animals; celebrate the season at Shepherd of the Hill’s North Pole Adventure, a walk-through experience that takes you through thousands of twinkling lights, visit Santa and his reindeer, see lights all over the Ozarks from Inspiration Tower, ride on Rudolph’s Hayride, and more. The 73rd Adoration Parade will take place on Sunday, December 5 at dusk. Branson

THE HAYGOODS

When the calendar flips to November each year, Branson’s star performers are ready to share the holidays with you and your family. With dazzling, star-filled Christmas shows, many of Branson’s entertaining families celebrate the reason for the season in a variety of song and dance.

celebrates keeping Christ in Christmas on this special night. With the lighting of the Adoration scene atop Mt. Branson, it is an overwhelming outpouring of love from our community as we come together to honor the story of Jesus’ birth. “America’s Christmas Tree City” has more than two dozen trees 25’ or taller. The Branson Christmas Coalition, working year-round to inspire, encourage and facilitate Christmas tree displays throughout the area, puts a special emphasis on the city’s “landmark trees.”

In 2020, the Community Tree to celebrate Branson’s love of this important season, our country, and our destination’s ability to bring families and friends closer together, featured all 50 states. Missouri Governor Mike Parson requested an item for the “United We Stand” Christmas tree, from every governor in the country. All 50 of the United States were represented on the beautiful tree. The Track Family Fun Parks have constructed a tree made from 500 up-cycled go-kart tires that is 25 feet tall. Branson Landing features the musical

Historic Downtown Branson’s Liberty Plaza is now home to a giant, 30’ Christmas tree decked out in thousands of white LED lights. It’s especially fun to visit on Festive Fridays during the season. One of the tallest trees in Branson is located in front of Sight & Sound Theatres, on Shepherd of the Hills Expressway, and it’s both massive and spectacular. The 46’ tree has a 6’ star on top, more than 4,300 LED lights and 1,260 ornaments. It’s a

definite selfie spot for families. The area’s largest tree is the 80’ Christmas tree at Silver Dollar City featuring hundreds of thousands of dancing high-res lights with infinite ability for color, music, light and animated imagery. In addition to those counted for the trees 25’ and taller list, is the collection at Silver Dollar City, which is a Christmas tree category all its own. Silver Dollar City has five more lighted trees that are 40’ or taller. No surprise the theme park was voted four times as the nation’s top holiday celebration by the readers of USA Today.

A SHEPHERD’S CHRISTMAS CAROL

Holidays remind us of the importance of preserving history and time-honored family traditions. At The Shepherd of the Hills Homestead, A Shepherd’s Christmas Carol does just that. While the audience indulges in a full turkey dinner and pumpkin dessert, a true Christmas classic starring your favorite characters from The Shepherd of the Hills Outdoor Drama happens right before your eyes. If New Year’s Eve requires a resolution to start on a memorable note, Branson has

a variety of entertainment options that are familyfriendly. But if you’re wanting a romantic getaway with your special someone, we have that, too. There are plenty of shows taking the stage each December 31 in Branson. Branson has received quite a few holiday accolades over the years: Named one of the best Christmas destinations in America by NBC’s Today Show (Best Holiday Travel Deal), USA Today (four years), Travel Channel, Fodor’s and Oprah magazine. www.ExploreBranson.com/Christmas

Catherine Haygood has been performing in Branson since the age of 1! Now 29 years old and playing six instruments onstage nightly with her long-running family show, “The Haygoods.” She loves Branson, her husband Jason, and her dog, Milo.

Escaping communist Russia in the 1970’s, Yakov came to this country with nothing but a dream. He worked as a bartender in a Catskills resort telling jokes each night after his shift. His comedy quickly grew in popularity and he made the move to Los Angeles.

A Missouri native, started to capture critics’ attention beginning at age seven. She made her Branson debut in 2005 and since then has not only become a headliner but runs a multi-million dollar theater in the heart of the 76 Entertainment District.

An “insider” is someone who has special knowledge. Learn more about some Branson entertainers favorite places to go or things to do when they are not performing for audiences. Those in the know tell about what they enjoy most in their hometown.

AMBER

CAMPBELL Shopping in Branson is on lots of people’s lists. When it’s showtime, Amber finds her stage makeup, eyelashes, fishnets, elbowlength gloves and feather boas in town at the Red Garter. In her front yard, she has at least one flag flying throughout the year. During every season, and for many occasions, of course, the Stars and Stripes are flying high. Amber finds flags for a Happy New Year, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, and more at The Flagstore in downtown Branson. When she’s looking for gifts, the Crystal Fish is her pick for classy items that are not too costly, but very memorable, like Swarovski and Pandora.

REZA

BORCHARDT There are many things I enjoy in Branson, aside from presenting my show ‘Edge of Illusion.’ Like my favorite restaurants, India Clay Oven or Gettin’ Basted, or fun attractions like Beyond the Lens and WonderWorks, there’s always something to do! Another cool thing about Branson is the other great shows. I typically don’t get to many because of our intense performing schedule but when I can go, I see my friend Dave Hamner or take in limited engagements at The Mansion or Welk Theatre, and it’s always a blast! If you don’t catch me at one of the places I’ve mentioned, you can probably catch me on the tennis court!

CATHERINE

HAYGOOD Catherine’s perfect day off is a fairly regular deal. Grabbing morning coffee at Expresso, she enjoys an hour or so kayaking on Table Rock Lake or Lake Taneycomo. Always something fabulous for lunch at Sugar Leaf Bakery, followed by an afternoon hiking at Lakeside Wilderness trail. You will find her seated high atop the Branson Ferris Wheel to catch the Ozark Mountain sunset, then headed to a great meal at Big D’s BBQ for dinner. She might get in a little practice on the harp after that. A regular day in the Ozark Mountains would be a perfect day just about anywhere else.

YAKOV

SMIRNOFF My love affair with Branson wasn’t intentional. In the ’80s I was performing in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Lake Tahoe. Living the American dream! Then the Soviet Union collapsed. David Letterman’s top 10 list of “things that will now change in the world” had me at #1–Yakov out of work! Funny, but six months later I wasn’t laughing. I looked for a place where they did not know that the Soviet Union collapsed… I ended up in Branson. I love this peaceful place in the Ozark Mountains. I fish, play golf or, if you’re like me who scores an 84 but then goes to the second hole, putt-putt golf might be more appealing. “WHAT A COUNTRY!”

C.J.

NEWSOM One of her family’s favorite things to do, on their rare day off, is to visit friends and see their shows: #1 Hits of the 60’s, Clay Cooper’s Country Express and Branson Famous Baldknobbers. They’re always amazed at the creativity! You can catch the creativity of her talented troupe at Americana Theatre for C.J. Newsom’s Classic Country & Comedy. And see some of the other shows at the theatre including: Raiding the Country Vault, The Johnson Strings, From Broadway to Bublé Starring George Dyer, The Blackwoods, and A Janice Martin Cirque Show.
