BRAPP MAGAZINE April 2017

Captains Quarters Happy April everybody. I was trying to come up with some crazy April fool’s joke, but do we even do that anymore? Isn’t it funny or maybe I should use the word scary how our society has changed over the recent years. I guess if you’re a young racer reading this you might be thinking wait, what but if you’re an old guy like me, you will probably get it. Anyhow - welcome to the race season everyone. I know some of you have never stopped but I believe for most we are just getting back into the swing of things. Unfortunately almost all the local events scheduled for March got cancelled either due to heavy rains or crazy cold weather. Yes, I know this is motocross but please keep in mind that although we’re chomping at the bit to get back to it that racers safety, flaggers, staff and promoters need to come first. To them it’s a 12 hour day on the track; they can’t jump back into a warm camper or vehicle in between motos. So thanks everyone for your patience. We were able to get a few races in at the end of the month and you can find that coverage here in this issue. Also check out some cool vintage flat track racing from Len Breech from back when flat track was still the predominant form of racing here in America. Also check out the modern classics spread from Glenn Hershey, if you grew up in the 70’s and 80’s this might be a show you want to get on your calendar for next year. We also have some racer interviews from the Daytona Amateur SX last month. Yes it was warmer there but still wet. We had a lot of locals finish exceptionally well there so make sure you link over to that results page and look for your favorite racers finishes. Our age class guys did really well there too almost dominating most of those classes. For those of you that are into the four wheel adventures make sure you check out the “Mud Freaks” article from a winter ride he did and look up the CMATVA newsletter. That’s a locally founded group that is making big strides in getting trail miles opened up in Pa. It’s all for ATV’s and side by sides at this point but who knows, at some point bikes might be able to get in on the action as well. There are many including those in the PA OHV that are working behind the scenes to keep riding opportunities open for us all. So here we go, April should offer racing opportunities every weekend across all disciplines in our area. Check out our upcoming events page and where to ride sections. If you could do us a big favor and please share our links with all your friends. We need as many views as we can get to keep this thing going and that’s no April Fool’s joke. We thank you all for reading and we’ll see you all soon out on the track or the trail.

ECEA Sprint Jr. Enduro - Squirrely Fern Shamong, NJ - March 18, 2017 - By: Jade Hartman With the Winter Storm Stella having blown through NJ just days before and 80% chance of showers looming over the event on Saturday, St. Patrick’s luck held out for one more day allowing the ECEA Jr. Sprint Enduro to commence as scheduled. Veteran’s and newbies showed up in record numbers.

Top 10 Overall Results Pee Wee 1. Ryder Sigety 2. Mason Tsakanikas 3. Sawyer Rosenberg 4. William Ervin 5. Chase Miller 6. Brody Gordon 7. Gabriel Molinari 8. Luke Humphrey 9. David Wands 10. John Williams

Youth 1. Max Fernandez 2. Aaron Myers 3. Ian Weisman 4. Jocelyn Barnes 5. Julian Wojcik 6. Austin Seth 7. Noah Ritz 8. Michael Hurley 9. Joshua Klouchek 10. Remington Platt

With over 300 in attendance and almost 100 participants, this was the largest junior enduro turnout in the country! Maybe it’s the free swag, the awesome track or maybe it’s the atmosphere where families share tools and parts with other families and kids help kids out on the track so that everyone has a chance to finish the race. Whatever the reason, it made for a superb Saturday afternoon! The competition began on the 2.2 mile Pee-Wee track. Starting off his season strong, Ryder Sigety did an amazing job holding off the other 17 racers for a solid 1st place finish. Mason Tsakanikas was close behind sealing up 2nd place. Just minutes behind Mason, Sawyer Rosenberg stole the last spot on the podium completing all 7 laps. 13 classes competed on the 3.7 mile youth course at 2pm, just as the damp mist came over the track. Undeterred, the boys and girls took to the track with great determination. Coming out on top was Max Fernandez with a 1st place finish. Aaron Myers battled with Ian Weisman for a 2nd place finish with Ian just barely 1 minute behind Aaron’s time. For full results of this race and information regarding upcoming events and races, please visit www.ecea.org. B

The Anthracite Trail Riders, a club dedicated to promoting the AOAA, hosted the Lock Haven area, Central Mountain ATV Association, Inc., on a ride through the park. Twenty-nine machines and approximately 40 members participated in the 45 mile ride that spanned the Western and Eastern Reserves with several stops along the way for sight-seeing, lunch and getting to know other members of each club. Sullivan County Charity Ride By: Mike “Mud Freak” Petrone Sullivan County ATV Association does it again! They picked a perfect weekend to host their charity ride. The weather was perfect... sunny and about 60°. The warm temperatures made the snow start to melt, which created a slippery and muddy trail for the 468 riders to navigate through. Overall, there were 30 to 40 miles of different elevations to switch between, but if it was easy it wouldn’t be fun! On average, there are about 10 landowners providing property to ride on. This time, there were 20 landowners volunteering. I’m one of the few that went out first...it was fun, but the real fun started the second time I went out! The land was so muddy from all of us riders ripping through the trails with all sorts of machines, as well as the snow melting. That made me a very happy camper. If mud isn’t flying, I’m not having fun! I spoke with Joe, one of the organizers, who told me about a great thing that the ATV Association does. Every October, they look within their local community for children with life-threatening illnesses to donate money to, along with a few other programs like the local school district and Toys for Tots. This event raised $18,000 which is going to help a lot of children. It’s amazing to get 468 riders together to have fun and do something good! Take some time to post a “thank you” to the 20 landowners on the Sullivan County ATV Association Facebook page for letting us rip up their property for the day! B

Round 2 of the AMA East HS Series / Round 1 of the VXCS March 18th-19th, 2017 - Garysburg, NC By: Keny Held Photos: Dan Morton Where do we begin? AMA/VXCS drew a record number of entries at the NCCAR - North Carolina Center for Automotive Research facility. Rain was in the forecast for Friday and Saturday and rain it did. Approximately 275 riders were in attendance including Bikes, Quads and UTV’s. This was also VXCS’s first year to host an AMA East HS. The majority of the riders were surprisingly from the North as they ventured South to escape the 2’-3’ of snow that had recently fallen. In the two wheel main event there were approximately 200 racers including local favorite, Robby Norwood, Brandon Nero, Kyle Honeycutt and several others were to do battle with 2016 O/A AMA East Champion Kyle McDonal and 2016’s 2nd O/A AMA East Champion “Wild” Wally Palmer and also on the front line was D6’s Hunter Bush.

Wild Wally Palmer launched the road crossing on every lap

When the green flag dropped it was Wild Wally Palmer with the Hole Shot out onto the 9.5 mile course. The track was a mix of tight trees, winding tails, endurox and wide open cross country terrain. Basically the best you can get. Rain the night before took care of the the dust and made for some great “slip n slide” action. The course held up well for approximately two of the four laps but the ruts and mud holes would eventually become a major concern. You either made it through....or you didn’t. Several racers bonsaied into the waterholes in the hopes that they would be the same depth as the lap before but this just was not the case. The red clay ruts and mud holes were unforgiving. You had to ride smarter then faster. There was a 30’ road crossing that the property manager took special care in making sure that a rubber mat was in place and at the riders meeting all the racers

Top three finishers in the main event

were instructed to stay upon the mats in order to keep the mud off of the Test Track. This venue is a State Run proving ground and they were very particular in keeping the mud off of the paved connector sections. Well Wild Wally Palmer apparently felt the rubber mats were just not his style so he decided to pre jump the roadway completely and cleared them every lap leaving the crowd in awe.

Mike Beeler wins the Youth O/A and finishes 9th O/A in the main. Palmer with some young fans.

At the halfway mark it was Palmer aboard his KTM-SRT with a 2 minute lead over 2nd place Kyle McDonal aboard his Bromley-Beta. About 3 minutes back from McDonal was local favorite, Yamaha mounted Brandon Nero. This was to remain for the rest of the race giving the checkered flag to Palmer. The top A Rider was Justin Lafferty. The top B Rider was Dylan Box. The top C rider was Mike Beeler Jr, who actually finished 9th O/A. Factory teams should keep an eye on this kid. Beeler was also the Youth O/A winner the day before the main. The top female racer was none other then Kiersten McDonal, younger sister to Kyle. In the 4 wheel division the racers were sent back out on the rut infested track however they did an awesome job with their wider profile machines. They too would battle it out for 2 + hours. In the end it was Matt Pitman with the win followed by Joseph Bosak with Brian Vaughan rounding out the podium. The AMA would like to welcome VXCS to the AMA family for 2017 and look forward to hosting the final round of the AMA HS Series with them in Wicomico, MD on November 4-5th. CMATVA News COME RIDE WITH US Our 2017 calendar is loaded with exciting rides and events. One of the things we started three years ago was planning our monthly rides out on a yearly schedule so our members can plan ahead on which rides they want to participate in. We have some members plan their vacations around some of the long weekend rides such as the Potter County Memorial Day weekend ride, Quiet Oaks Campground weekend ride or the Houtzdale weekend camping ride.

One of our other big rides in 2016 was the annual “Tour for Elk and Toy Drive.” We had over 350 riders participate in two days of touring Bennezette Township roads and viewing groups of elk. Over 130 elk were seen over the two days and this year over 365 toys were collected for the Clinton County area, which “Mark the Shark” included in his Christmas toy program.

We try to plan one big ride each year out of state. In 2016, a group of us rode the Ride the Wilds trails in New Hampshire, which included riding your ATV to the top of Mount Washington. In 2017, we are planning a trip to Ride Royal Blue Trails in Tennessee.

Last year we added two food drive rides. One was part of our annual “Hobo Soup Ride” and the second was part of our annual “Renovo Vista Ride” on the Charles property. We collected over 230 food items, which we donated to the Clinton County Women’s Center The CMATVA Mileage Club was started in 2013. We keep track of every mile our members ride with our association. Then in June of each year at our annual picnic we award the mileage bar that the members earned for that year53rd in 250 mile inannual tervals.

New in 2017 1st Annual Poker Run We will be having our first Poker Run this year, sponsored by Larry’s Sport Center, Inc. in Galeton, Pa. You can start from either end of the poker run Quiet Oaks Campground or Potter County Family Campground with five stops between the two campgrounds. A $20.00 entrance fee will be charged which will go towards signage for townships that open their roads to ATV’s. At all seven stops, you will draw a poker chip. There will be a chance to win $5, $10, and $25 winning poker chips at each stop. Please come out and ride from Clinton County to Potter County on August 19, 2017. It will start at 9am and all stations will close at 3pm. ATV Initiative Since it was formed, CMATVA has been a strong advocate for increased opportunities for riding in our region. In 2014 the Clinton County Economic Partnership Tourism Committee began looking into the economic benefits of capitalizing on the explosion of ATV business throughout the state and in neighboring states like West Virginia and Ohio. As a member of the committee, CMATVA was asked to assist in the design of a new ATV trail system in northcentral PA with the goal of encouraging growth of tourism business. What started out as 800 miles of riding is now almost up to 1300 miles of new riding area, which we are at 44% of our goal. In 2016 CMATVA joined the PA Wilds to support safe family type ATV riding and the ATV Initiative. The Clinton County Commissioners allocated funds to pay for an economic impact study that was conducted summer of 2015. The study looked at the current trends in ATV business in our county. The results showed how much the average person spent when trail riding in the county We have worked all of 2016 visiting different townships talking to them about opening their roads to ATVs. CMATVA also joined together with Snow Shoe Rails to Trails to cover the cost of signage to any township that opens their roads. Much of our work has focused on mapping the existing roads and trails that have the potential to connect towns, villages, and landmarks. Recently, we have worked on mapping out all of the open township roads in Potter County and connecting them to Denton Hill trail system and Cross Fork. We thank the SSRTA for joining with our association on this venture. Their experience in developing and maintaining the Snow Shoe Rails to Trails system has been invaluable in our discussions and planning. We also are grateful

MAMA Season Opener Tomahawk MX - March 25th & 26th, 2017 By: Brapp Mag

It took a little while to get to it but the Mid Atlantic Motocross Association was finally able to get their 2017 season moving. The series was originally planned to open at Budds Creek in early March but Mother Nature had other ideas.

Loretta Lynn Amateur National Championships. I know m have already qualified in other regions and the South East Mason Naecker wins both printing Jr. but after this particular race.

Mini classes and 80 (9-11) A

Over 900 riders made their way to the Doublin Gap MX burg, PA to take a shot for their entry ticket. I saw one cla the whole way from Utah to make the cut. It was a typical preparation for Tennessee, hot and dusty and great compet promoter for keeping everything running smoothly and fo track for this event.

They say everything happens for a reason however and I believe the opener got moved to this date so we all could enjoy the warm temperatures and clear skies that the Saturday racing offered up. The College Boy and 25 plus groups kicked off the 2017 season with some great racing action. The first moto of the year would see a great battle between MAMA regular Cameron Dowell and District 6’s Cory Carsten. Carsten is looking more like his legendary racing father Barry as time goes on and he would end up with the overall on this day.

Congrats to all who made it in, no matter where you call ho job to all those who didn’t just for making the attempt. Many made the cut here at this event with a few winning their cl pictured below. Take a look at how our champions did the mxsports.com to see the complete results.

Speaking of Barry - yes he was there too and although I heard him say at Motorama he shouldn’t be doing this anymore, he managed to grab three Senior class wins on the day. 25 Plus would see Chad Wages with the win followed by Jason Carroll and Phil Lyon Jr.

Justin Rodbell from Prince Frederick, MD went 1 - 2- 3 to win 125 (12-16) B/C and 1 - 7 - 1 to win Schoolboy 1 (12-16) B/C

Next up was School Boy 1 and let me tell you, some of the names competing here are bound for greatness. This is always one of my favorite divisions as these young racers are moving off the minis and preparing their chase for the expert and pro ranks. There were way too many great battles on the day for me to get into here. Besides I’m afraid I would fail to mention someone deserving. Please check the top five finishers here then head over to MAMAMX. com to see the complete results. Make sure you hit our website at either BrappMag.com or download our FREE phone app by searching Brapp Mag on your phones app store. There you can catch images from all classes and some really cool video from the day. We’ll see you at Southfork. B

CHAPLAINS CORNER By: Jim Bull

JimBull TALKS

Each month as I write this column my hopes are that it can make a difference in someone’s life or in many lives for that matter. I title this article the Chaplains Corner not to entice, threaten or pull anyone in. I title it that because it’s where my beliefs come from. I know that not everyone believes in a higher power and especially in the higher power (Jesus Christ) that I believe in. I realize it’s also not my place to tell anybody how to think or what to believe. My only goal is to present some facts and hope that it means something to somebody. It’s funny to me though that as I gain my information and hopefully wisdom from the Bible, how ironic that most of the other information out there, no matter what the subject is, comes from Biblically based ideas and teachings. They just won’t tell us that however. Let’s look at the word wisdom for example. I would bet that most of you would agree that to use wisdom in the things that we do is a good idea. Especially when we are on the race track competing. I went to the number one source these days for information (Google) and here is what I found.

Wis·dom - a noun The soundness of an action or decision with regard to the application of experience, knowledge, and good judgment. Definition of wisdom - from the Merriam-Webster Dictionary 1. Accumulated philosophical or scientific learning : knowledge 2. A wise attitude, belief, or course of action 3. The teachings of the ancient wise men I would say the above answers are all pretty correct. We want to make sound decisions when approaching lapped rider’s right? We also want to look at facts like in the dictionary’s first definition (we have to look at the science). And yes having a wise attitude or course of action is always smart, but I’ll ask you - where do you get that information from? How about number three above, the teachings of ancient wise men. That could be your biblical reference without actually saying its information from a Holy book. I know many times too we all claim that we want to learn things the hard way - by actual experience. And trust me; I have plenty of experience from that course of action myself. What I would encourage you to do as an alternative is to learn from the teachings of others, to learn from someone else’s experience. Enter the book of Proverbs - its 31 chapters written by one of the wisest kings of ancient times. Below is what I found on the website: www.biblehub.com.

The Purpose of Proverbs 1: These are the proverbs of Solomon, David’s son, king of Israel. 2: Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline, to help them understand the insights of the wise. 3: Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives, to help them do what is right, just, and fair. 4: These proverbs will give insight to the simple, knowledge and discernment to the young. I would ask you all to believe one thing if nothing else that’s written above. Believe that there are no new success principles or ways to become wise. Believe that everything you need to know about living a happy and successful life can be found in the pages of God’s Bible. I would ask you to check it out and see for yourself. Do it in secret if you must, but I would say it just might be one of the wisest decisions you’ll ever make in your life.

Jeremy Orr - Pro Flat Track Racer By Mia Moore

With his wholesome “Boy Next Door” smile, Jeremy Orr (Hulmeville, PA) looks like he’d be right at home on the starting line of some small town high school football game. However, Jeremy has found his niche on a different kind of starting line. Jeremy is a flat track motorcycle racer. Despite having ridden motorcycles for most of his seventeen years, Jeremy didn’t have the opportunity to begin racing until 2014. “I had always wanted to do some sort of racing,” Jeremy said, “But I didn’t have the connections to do it. When I moved to Levittown, my neighbor was a former national number, and he took me under his wing and got me started on a KX125... I did pretty well, my first couple of races.” Pretty well, indeed. In his first year, Jeremy won the 125 Championships in both District 6 and District 7. In 2016, he won both Main events in the Amateur Classes at the Springfield short track races. This year, in only his fourth year of racing, he has gone professional. “This year,” he said, “I’m racing in the AFT Singles Class on my Gianna Utility Construction, Triple J racing, Honda CRF450r.” Jeremy adds, “The biggest challenges about the sport, for me, has definitely been the fact that I started so late and have to play ‘catch up,’ but I try to look at it as, I’ll be at my peak a lot later than everyone else I’m racing against now, and I look at that as a good thing.” When asked about his immediate goals, Jeremy said, “This year, I plan on racing as much as I can. I’m in the process now of trying to get a bike out west for rounds 4 and 5 of the AFT series. I struggle on bigger hard pack clay tracks, so I’m kind of building my schedule around those types of tracks. I want to get as much experience as I can before 2018, on those types of tracks.” Most of his racing in District 6 was on Short Tracks, and Jeremy is quite comfortable on loose and dug up dirt. However, he is looking more comfortable, each time he steps out of his comfort zone and takes a few fast laps on the longer or more hard-packed tracks, and he has been attracting more fan attention at every race he has run in. So far, this season, that has included races

in Florida, Wisconsin, Georgia, and North Carolina. “My personal goal for 2017 is to make main events in AFT,” Jeremy said, “And to podium at least once this year in an AFT event. Other than that, from my mechanical point of view, my goal is to never not make a race or not be able to finish a race because of mechanical failure.” Jeremy has a very busy life, even when he isn’t on the track. He is currently finishing his Junior year at Bucks County Technical High School, where he has been studying High Performance Engines for the past three years. He also holds a job as an underground utility locater for Gianna Utility Construction. “During the school year, I go right to work after school at 2pm,” he said, “and work until 8pm pretty much 5 days a week, and full days on weekends I’m not racing. My normal day is... school from 6am-2pm, then work from 2pm-8pm, then I’m usually working in the shop from 8 until sometimes as late as 2am... Whatever it takes to get things ready for the weekend coming up.” That’s a pretty impressive schedule for a seventeen-year old! Why would a busy guy like that take on the extra tasks and time restrictions of a professional racer? “If there had to be one specific thing I had to say about what I love about the sport,” he explained, “It would have to be the relationship the flat track community has with each other. The help and advice I’ve been fortunate enough to have has come from some of the best in the sport. Pretty much anyone is willing to help anyone out with anything, without a second thought.” When asked what he would advise someone who was considering flat track racing, he said, “The biggest advice I would give to someone that is interested in flat track is... Just Do It. 4 years ago, I literally never heard of flat track at all... and, 2 years ago, if you would have told me in 2017 I’d have a professional license, I would have said, ‘You’re lying.’ In life, you’ll never know what will happen unless you give it your all and try something new!” Wise words, indeed. Finally, when asked if there was anybody he’d like to thank, Jeremy said, “I’d like to thank Mia Moore for giving me this opportunity for this interview, and all my other sponsors, because truly without them I wouldn’t be where i am today: Gianna Utility Construction,Triple J Racing, Hulmeville Inn, All the Above Tree Service, Mom and Dad, Ed Mondelli, Fusion Racewear, Sarah Varnes, Dan Bromley, Web Camshafts, Works Connection, DT-1 Filters, Impact Safe T Armor, Forma Boots USA, KW Race Wear, Saddlemen, Motion Pro, Vortex Racing, and After Dark Tuning.” B
