OPTIMUM ATV LIFE & PERFORMANCE FIVE CHALLENGES (AND SOLUTIONS) ATVs and UTVs used for racing, trail riding, heavy hauling and nearly every other application share at least one trait: they pose significant challenges to the fluids that protect them. Despite spending thousands to purchase and modify their machines, some enthusiasts mistakenly see no reason for using premium fluids when performing service. AMSOIL synthetic motor oil, grease, fuel additives and other fluids, however, are formulated to meet the challenges posed by ATVs and UTVs better than lower-cost conventional products.
1. EXTREME ENGINE STRESS High-rpm, hot-running ATV and UTV engines create extreme conditions that can quickly degrade inferior oils. The churning action of engine parts combined with elevated heat causes shearing forces that can tear apart, or shear, the molecular structure of the oil. Additionally, the intense pressure the oil undergoes as it is repeatedly forced through tight clearances, such as the interfaces of the piston ring/cylinder wall and cam lobe/lifter, also causes viscosity loss due to shear. Oil that has sheared out of its intended viscosity range can fail to form a protective lubricating film on critical engine parts, leading to accelerated wear.
2. ALL-SEASON PERFORMANCE Adding to the challenge, engine oil must balance cold-weather fluidity with high temperature protection, particularly in models used year-round where ambient conditions vary widely. For this reason, many ATVs and UTVs require oils with a broad viscosity rating (e.g. 0W-40). Lower “W” numbers indicate the oil flows more readily at colder temperatures, improving cold starts and allowing the oil to circulate quickly for fast engine protection. The second number indicates the oil’s viscosity at operating temperature. Higher numbers indicate the oil remains thicker. Because increased viscosity relates to the oil’s ability to bear load, one might assume a higher viscosity at operating temperature equals increased protection. However, using oil with an unnecessarily high viscosity can increase fluid friction, which reduces fuel efficiency. It can also increase operating temperature, hastening oil oxidation and degradation. Oil that is too thick to flow through oil galleries and tolerances designed for a specific viscosity can fail to protect the engine. Finding the optimum balance is vital to all season performance.
3. ETHANOL PROBLEMS Currently, most gasoline sold in the U.S. contains up to 10 percent ethanol (E10), and government agencies and lawmakers have authorized sale of gas containing 15 percent (E15). Ethanol is susceptible to water intrusion; when water collects in the gas tank through condensation or other means, the bond between ethanol and gasoline can break because ethanol is hygroscopic (it likes water more than it likes gasoline). This phenomenon is known as phase separation. The ethanol bonds with the water and sinks to the bottom of the fuel tank, which can create a host of problems, including the formation of gums, varnish and other insoluble debris that can plug fuel flow passages and negatively affect engine performance. When this ethanol/water mixture is pulled into the engine, it creates a lean-burn situation that increases combustion chamber temperatures and can lead to piston scuffing or catastrophic engine failure. Treat gasoline stored in cans with AMSOIL Quickshot®, formulated to address ethanol-related problems, specifically phase separation. Quickshot contains a high concentration of potent cleaning agents that clean combustion chamber, injector and carburetor deposits for maximum performance. It is designed for use at each fill-up for best performance.
4. CHAINCASE AND GEARCASE PROTECTION To reduce costs, some enthusiasts use automatic transmission fluid or gear lube in their chaincases and gearcases. Neither fluid, however, is engineered for these applications. Automatic transmission fluid is a hydraulic fluid formulated without the extreme-pressure additives needed to provide enhanced wear protection, leaving gears and chains vulnerable to premature failure. Automotive gear lube is designed to lubricate hypoid gears and is generally too thick for proper chain and gear lubrication, impairing circulation and leading to wear and decreased energy efficiency. AMSOIL Synthetic Chaincase & Gear Oil is specifically formulated for powersports chaincase and gearcase applications. It contains extreme-pressure additives to provide an extra measure of wear protection, while it is also designed to repel water and resist foam and corrosion.
5. WATER WASHOUT AND INCREASED HEAT Whether at work or play, ATVs and UTVs are commonly exposed to water, mud and ice. Frequent water exposure can wash the grease from suspension and steering components, inviting corrosion and wear. AMSOIL Synthetic Water Resistant Grease features increased adhesion and cohesion properties compared to other greases. It resists water washout to remain in place, making it perfect for aTV and UTV applications. It is available in convenient 3-oz. cartridges for use with the AMSOIL Grease Gun Kit, which provides the ideal package size for powersports applications. AMSOIL DOMINATOR® Synthetic Racing Grease is recommended for high-performance racing ATVs exposed to high heat and friction. It is specifically formulated for maximum friction-reduction and high-temperature performance.
FOLLOWING THESE SIMPLE YET EFFECTIVE GUIDELINES WHEN PERFORMING MAINTENANCE CAN HELP ENTHUSIASTS GET THE BEST PERFORMANCE AND MOST YEARS OUT OF THEIR ATVS AND UTVS. BRAPP MAGAZINE August 2019

PVR Vintage Racing at Ashcraft Farm
Jana Schneider #802
Story: Emily Reichart Photos: Lorena Walker
Round five of the AHRMA North East Motorcross series and round five of the AHRMA Mid Atlantic, Potomac Vintage Riders Cross Country Series took place at the much anticipated Ashcraft Farm near State College PA on June 29 & 30. It’s always fun when we have an inter-region event. (Cross country riders scored points in both regions.) We had racers from at least 10 states participate making it a very well attended event. This first time venue proved outstanding for both the grass track motocross on Saturday and the cross country races on Sunday. For the cross country racers the motocross grass track was a chance to warm up for the cross country race the next day and dust the cobwebs off from the two week break. Practice for the motocross races began under sunny skies Saturday morning, something that many of us were unaccustomed to after a year of habitual wet weather. In the morning, races one through three were run in dry dusty conditions with the sun still shining but as the fourth race lined up the western sky grew dark. Fans fled to the pits as the race wrapped up, just before a strong thunderstorm rolled in. The rain did not last long and after a thirty minute break we were back to racing with race five up next. The sky cleared up but the racers now faced the complete opposite conditions of the first four races in the morning. The mud was a real handful for many as the previously dusty track was now slick. Races six through nine were completed on a gradually drying track with a little more grip available each time as the track tacked up. Conditions for the second round of motocross were almost perfect with a now tacky track leading to some really fast lap times. It was great to get out on a natural terrain grass track and get the experience of how the sport got its start.
Emily Reichart #733
Comments around the pits from all participants echoed of how nice the motocross course was laid out and how much fun was had. For those of us that were staying for Sunday’s cross country race the anticipation was building for a great race out on the mountain of the beautiful Ashcraft Farm. The vintage cross country race on Sunday started out with the traditional dead engine start and competitors racing into the woods and up the mountain on a course that embodied every challenging element of cross country racing. The beginning of the course lead down a double track fire road through a shale pit and then up a loose logging road that took the racers up the mountain, crossed over a few drainage swells, providing an opportunity for some to catch air, and then turned to the left, back into the single track. The course then wound through twisty single track trails before passing by an amazing overlook of State College and then back down the mountain on a few steep off camber descents.
John Ashcraft #58
For spectators, the highlight of the cross country races was seeing racers come through the sink holes near the end of each lap, this was the place to watch both the vintage and post vintage races as there was always action between racers trying to pass, catching air and choosing which line to take up and out of the sink holes. Sunday’s cross country races were the perfect mix of single and double track, tight twisty trails, combining almost every feature you can think of while being completely unique from any other venue we have attended this year. Many thanks to the Ashcraft Family and their friends, this weekend would not have happened without their dedication to the sport we love and enjoy so much. There is not a better group of friends, than our fellow racers, to spend the race weekends with and cannot wait for the next weekend of racing, campfires and lifelong friendships to continue. 9th Annual BMC - CMATVA Cruise for a Cure Riders Raise Money for Cancer Patients
State officials participate in the 2019 Cruise
June 8, 2019 - Renovo, PA By: Jim Bull – BrappMag.com
Nine years ago, the Relay for Life Team from the Bucktail Medical Center teamed up with the Central Mountains ATV Association (CMATVA) looking for an “out of the box” way to raise money for cancer patients and cancer research. Hence the Renovo ATV Cruise for a Cure was born and over the years has raised close to $75,000 that comes right back to local people who are both fighting and have survived cancer. I learned in speaking with Tim Reeves, the CEO for Bucktail Medical Center, that their facility which was founded in 1909 is not only the local hospital for the residents of both Renovo and South Renovo but is also a Critical Access Hospital which is a designation given to rural hospitals that meet guidelines to receive certain benefits, such as cost-based reimbursement for Medicare services. Mr. Reeves explained that their Relay for Life team that was started by local cancer survivors was looking for a different type of fundraiser when they stumbled across the CMATVA who was looking for additional opportunities to help open riding areas in the state. The two groups teamed up for what has become the largest fundraiser that the Relay for Life Team sponsors each year. “That first year we had 60 riders,” explained Reeves. Due to the CMATVA’s involvement and the support of the local community the event has grown tremendously. He also wanted to thank the DCNR and the local fire companies and landowners for cooperating and opening the town and sections of trail to ATV traffic that would not otherwise be allowed. The Cruise for a Cure is a 50 mile controlled guided trail ride that starts in downtown Renovo and South Renovo and travels to the Quiet Oaks Campground in Tamarack, Pa. (Near Cross Fork) There, Boy Scout Troop 137 offered a catered lunch to help raise money for the cause before riders traveled an alternate route back to Renovo to enjoy a Chicken BBQ dinner at the Renovo Fire Company that was included in their donation for the ride.
Riders take a break out on the trail Riders enjoy lunch prepared by the local Boy Scout Troop at Quiet Oaks Campground
In 2019 – 216 machines participated plus passengers. I didn’t have final numbers prior to this writing but I’d bet we had close to 400 total participants. One big treat for this year’s ride was the involvement from the DCNR. Both DCNR Secretary Cindy Dunn and John Norbeck the Deputy Secretary for the Parks and Forestry Service rode along to get a “real feel” for what we love to do. Both have been and continue to be instrumental in helping get trails opened here in Pa. We thank you for participating in the ride and all that you are doing to help the cause of getting both Pa residents and non-residents out in the Wilds of Pennsylvania. I even had one couple approach me to have me, “let them know” with them both being in their late 70’s, that riding their side by side is really the only means they have to get out into nature anymore. That these trails let them get to places in our great state that they would never see otherwise. Thanks go out to everyone involved, especially the riders for turning out. It just goes to show that the off-road community wants to give back and what better way to do it than helping someone improve their quality of life. If you couldn’t make this year’s Cruise and still want to help you can contact the Bucktail Medical Center directly at: (570) 923-1000 or a member of the Central Mountains ATV Association at: www.cmatva.org We hope you all return in 2020 – I know I’ll be there. Tamaqua, PA - July 6-7, 2019 By: BrappMag.com Are you tough enough - 180 riders thought they were as they registered to compete in the 5th Annual Reading Off Road Riders “Tough Like RORR” event this past weekend near Tamaqua, Pa. The format – show up and compete in two heat races on Saturday to attempt to qualify for the main. Finishing scores are combined and the top 30 automatically advanced. Then if you didn’t make the cut on Saturday you had to return Sunday morning and race again with the top 30 then moving on to the final. The Sunday afternoon main event saw 60 male riders compete with only 22 riders completing the two - 17-mile laps. The winner would finish in just over three hours with the final rider crossing the barrels at over six and a half hours, wow. Factory Sherco rider Wade Young would be the dominate rider on the weekend winning every race he entered.
Yeah, that was part of the trail
Earlier in the day, seven brave women competed in the abbreviated course for the girls and although beaten battered and bruised, they all crossed the finish line with smiles on their faces. Matter of fact the bottom four teamed up and made a pact that they would work together, and all finish the race – mission accomplished. Get more details at: www.rorr.org B Main Event

AMA Pro Hillclimb Championship Series Round 2
9.083 seconds. At intermission Koester held a commanding lead followed in order by Cipala and Mason.
Wisconsin rider and 2018 X-Games Motoclimb Super Series Silver Medalist, Logan Cipala, won the 450 Pro and Unlimited Classes when the White Rose Motorcycle Club hosted round 2 of the 2019 AMA Pro Hillclimb Championship Series. The Xtreme Class win went to 2018 Triple Champion, John Koester, Hornell, NY, who came to Jefferson fresh off an all-class sweep at round 1.
Riders knew Koester’s was the time to beat in the second half Xtreme competition. Libhart posted a time on his second run, but knew 9.612 seconds would not put him on the podium. Jack Mason followed with an 8.919-second ride, taking over the second spot. A familiar scene was repeated- Koester on the sidelines waiting and watching. If no one bettered his time, he could take the win with just one ride, and so it was. Koester stood on the top step, flanked by Jack Mason and Logan Cipala, second and third, respectively. Remarkably, Koester’s time was the fastest, by more than one-half second, of any rider in any class on the day.
Cipala and Koester Win Jefferson Hillclimb By: Jeff Whitehead Jefferson, PA, June 2
Nick Miller, from Indiana, led off the 450 Pro Class but stopped 50-feet short of the finish line for a distance of 250 feet. Luke Cipala, Logan’s brother, topped the hill first with an 11.061-second E.T., and the race was on. Koester upped the ante with a 10.391-second ride. Local favorite, Phil Libhart, East Petersburg, PA, took the lead, stopping the clock at 10.352 seconds. Then Minnesota rider, Jay Sallstrom, broke the 10-second barrier with a scorching 9.989-second ride for the lead. He was quickly eclipsed by Logan Cipala who shaved just 0.002 of a second off Sallstrom’s score to stand in first at the half. In second-half 450 Pro action, Koester posted a 9.683-second E.T., moving to the top of the leader board. Sallstrom battled back into first, chopping three-tenths off Koester’s time. But Logan Cipala, riding last in the order and now in third-place, proved his mettle cresting the hill in 9.274 seconds for the win, trailed by Sallstrom and Koester, second and third respectively. Libhart led the ride order in the Xtreme Class, but a mechanical malfunction cut short his attempt, stopping him half way up the hill. Riding next, Indiana rider Jack Mason set the pace at 9.155 seconds. Rookie rider from Michigan, Trey Hagstrom moved into second with a 9.386 E.T. Koester followed with a flat-out scream to the top in just 7.916 seconds. Now it seemed the race was for second place. Riders jockeyed for position with Cody Mason posting a 9.205 E.T. Sallstrom crested in 9.345 seconds, Portage PA’s Bryan Rusnak at 9.596 seconds, and Logan Cipala-
Delta PA’s Cory Strickler topped the Unlimited Class ride order, setting a fast pace at 8.934 seconds. West Virginian, Joseph Lowe, followed with a 9.575 second E.T. Koester wedged into second at 9.342 seconds. Sallstrom and Luke Cipala posted times in the nines, but not enough for the podium. Stricker stood in first, followed by Koester and Lowe in order at intermission. When the Unlimited Class racing resumed all riders set their sights on Strickler. Logan Cipala, who crashed on his first run, hit his mark. He topped the hill and the podium with an 8.482 second E.T., bumping Strickler and Koester down one spot and knocking Lowe off the podium. Cipala’s win was his second on the day, having taken top honors in the 450 Pro class as well. He credited his wins to his family, his team, his sponsors and to devoting his life to the sport of motorcycle racing. The day also featured Verti-Cross Hillclimbing with two or three riders scaling the hill in in wild elbow-to-elbow action. When the dust settled after the final it was brothers Logan and Luke Cipala in the first and second spots, respectively, followed by Rusnak in third place. Mark your calendars- White Rose Motorcycle Club will be holding their second night hillclimb on September 21 this year. B

DO YOU WANT TO FINISH THE YEAR STRONG
2019 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
So, we’re midway through the 2019 racing season and I just wanted to check in to see how you’re doing, not only with your racing efforts but in your life as well. Isaiah 3 (NLT) says: 10: Tell the godly that all will be well for them. They will enjoy the rich reward they have earned! 11: But the wicked are doomed, for they will get exactly what they deserve. Now this can apply to everything you are trying to accomplish in life including your relationships with others, your work career, what you do for fun and of course your results on the racetrack. There is a catch however and it’s found in the beginning of each of the verses above. You see whether you know it or not, God has great plans for your life. He wants you to have the best of everything. But on the other hand, his competitor the Devil, he wants things to go the other way for you. He wants you to crash, not to finish the race, not to get the things that God has so grandly planned for you. I know the Devil tries to make the bad or wicked things look cool, but unfortunately, it’s just his way of leading you into the bad line, to get you to cut the course and as verse 11 above states you’ll get exactly what you deserve.
717.571.5667
The good news is that if you seek God, that if you make the effort to learn how he would like you to live that you will finish strong, that you’ll earn the riches you so greatly deserve.
NO PETS - NO DOGS - Beer Limit one 6-pack - NO GLASS
I would challenge you not to believe me, but to find out for yourself. Start each day by just talking to God and then listening to what you hear back. To download the Bible App and read just a little bit of scripture each day. It doesn’t matter which, just choose one and read.
