Caught In The Act!
Captains Quarters Hey Everybody – welcome to our spring print issue. Yes, daylight savings has ended and we’re back to the tracks and trails for what I hope to be a much drier year than last. As I’m setting here writing this the rain is falling and puddling up out on the back forty. Boy oh boy, say it ain’t gonna be a year like last. Either way, its time to ride. Whether you are a racer or an avid off-road rider I’d say never let Mother Nature slow you down. After a year like we had last year, nothing should scare you away. We’ve already had a few races before this printing that you can find in our pages. Of course, Motorama comes and goes no matter what the weather and Pagoda got their season opener in this year. Doublin Gap wasn’t as fortunate but that race was scheduled for early March. By the time your reading this both MAMA and the MDRA will have had their openers too. The ECEA also had

a great first Enduro of 2019 with a sold out 500 entries. If that’s any indicator of what their season is going to bring, we’re in for a heck of a year. Yes, we’ve been out in the side by side all winter too riding with the CMATVA and others. Check out everything that they do by going to their website at: www.cmatva. org and by checking out their ad on our cover. If you ride an ATV or UTV you definite-

ly should check them out and join the cause. Inside our pages find out where and when you can ride, event schedules and great sponsors who want to help you with all your riding needs. I know we are all lovers of the internet and the convenience that can provide. Please remember though that these local guys and gals are here for you and they need your business too. I’d be willing to bet that if you asked, they would do what it takes to earn some of your business.

Round 2 of the SRT - AMA East Hare Scrambles Championship Series 03/03/19 Garysburg, NC
Round 2 of the SRT - AMA East Hare Scrambles Championship Series was hosted by VXCS. Its getting to the point where I don’t know how to start a race report without using the term “Rain Soaked Track”. Kyle McDonal takes the win and the Series points lead.
I almost want to take the year off but I (we) continue to show up at these events and race. Recent cancellations at nearby series the week prior and throughout the area have many scratching their heads “When is this rain going to stop?” 2018 was probably one of the muddiest seasons I have ever participated in and all indication thus far appear to demonstrate the same. VXCS and a small group of visiting vol-
unteers did their best to re-route many of the affected areas as Friday night delivered another 1” of rain. All 3 of the heats ran an abbreviated course as did the quads on Saturday. The main event was a combination of the A, B and C riders. There was no shortage of both visiting and local AA talent. The event started slightly behind schedule and after the 1st lap it was Kyle McDonal with the lead. Hole Shotter Hunter Bush would get stuck in a mud hole on 1st lap and would give up the lead. Fortunately for Kyle and Beta, the two would find the perfect combination of lines and he delivered one of the best rides that we have seen to date. Close behind Kyle was Gary En-
Earlier in the day the Youth event would showcase 40 brave kids who would do there best to adapt to what was coming their way. All efforts for re-routing would not alleviate all the mud holes and slippery bridge crossings. After the 1st lap it was quite apparent that the Overall was not coming from the front 1416 Super mini line but from the 1213 Super Mini line.

man on his Yamaha doing his best to keep McDonal in his sights. Behind Enman was KTM’s Justin Lafferty and Yamaha mounted Matthew Davis. This would continue for several laps until Justin would have a mechanical issue and drop him back a few positions. Fellow AA’s Hunter Bush and Tanner Way fell victim to poor line selection and the “NC CAR Quick Sand” that was spread out along the track. At the mid way point Bush would start to make a comeback charge for the A top 3 and it was paying off. On the White Flag lap he would surface in 2nd place with Matthew Davis taking the consistency award in 3rd. After the two hour mark this is how they would finish. Kyle now takes an early lead in the AMA East points standings.

KTM racer Griere Moir and Team Perfect Storm’s Suzuki Kenito Held would battle from flag to flag with 10 second faster lap times then the rest of the field. They would exchange the 12-13 SM lead several times and eventually make their way through the front line. Trying to hold them off was Kawasaki mounted Zach Stoe. Zach did his best to hold them off but politely let them by. Zach then tucked in behind them and enjoyed the show. In the end it was Moir, Held and Stoe. Many kudos to the parents who spread out along the track to assist these kids through the troubled spots. In the morning the 50cc would run for 45 minutes in a similar course as the Youth and they did so extremely respectable. The top dog on this day is MX racer turned Off Road Camryn Popek aboard his Fun Factory Racing Cobra. Behind him was local racer Carson Shelton aboard his dad prepped KTM. Fellow FFR Cobra Gabe Molinari did his best to keep pace with his team mate Popek but would have to settle for 3rd. Great job by all the racers and the racing community for coming together under such adverse conditions. B Kenny Held AMA Off Road Commissioner AMA East Hare Scramble Coordinator

Nancy Dunlap Memorial HOBO Soup Ride and Food Drive Central Mountains ATV Association March 9, 2019 By: Jim Bull The gang from the Central Mountains ATV Association returned to the Bloody Skillet ATV trail system located in the Sproul State Forest for a second time in 2019 in early March for their annual Hobo Soup Ride. A ride for Whiskey Springs was relocated here due to impassable roads back in February and a third ride will actually take place here prior to this printing for their also annual, Hot Dog Night Ride. What is a Hobo Soup ride you ask? I was wondering the same thing as this was our first time attending. My wife always tells me I’m a little slow when it comes to things like this and while there is a reason or two, we won’t get into those details here. Even as I was staring into the large pot of home brew soup, I was still scratching my head until that teeny weeny little light bulb that God gave me finally went off in my head. In my limited thought patterns, I asked myself, what is a hobo, and I came to the conclusion that a hobo is someone who travels around a lot and works just enough to earn his keep or his soup in this case before moving on to the next destination.
FIND MORE INFO & JOIN THE ASSOCIATION AT: www.CMATVA.org Waiting in line for some Hobo Soup
So, I still don’t know if I got that right or not, but in this instance, everyone who comes along on the ride must donate a can of soup. Then the soup is all taken to a club members camp that we can access along our ride and thrown into a big pot with 10 pounds of burger mixed in and prepared for us while we travel around through the woods of Pa. It was quite good by the way and I believe enjoyed by all 60 plus members that went along for the ride that day. We rode over 50 miles through Centre and Clinton counties, we all had a nice hot lunch thanks to our donations and our hosts and we got to spend 8 hours out in the PA Wilds riding our machines, does it get any better? Riders also had to be a member of the association and bring along a non-perishable food item to be donated to the Clinton County Women’s Center. You see, not only does the CMATVA take care of its own, we also do our best to help other organizations that need a helping hand. By becoming a member not only do you help expand trail riding opportunities in our state, you also get to give back for any number of good causes throughout the year.
Over 60 members participated in our last ride
The CMATV is an advocate for safe and responsible riding and creates an environment where you can participate in two guided trail rides each month. You’ll also have the pleasure of never having to ride alone again or for that matter, wonder where you can ride. Joining the association offers many benefits on top of that and you can find all the details at: www. cmatva.org Our next big ride after this printing will be our Good Friday ride at Rock Run Recreation, so we invite you all to join and come along for the fun. NORTH CENTRAL PA ATV INITIATIVE Objective: Connect communities and four DCNR ATV Trail Systems in Northcentral PA to boost the economy through increased tourism. It was just four short years ago when some folks from the Central Mountains ATV Association and the Snow Shoe Rails to Trails met with the DCNR and other local legislators, tourism committees, business owners and residents to present their dream of creating a network of legal riding here in Pa like the Hatfield McCoy Trail System in WV. To date the CMATVA has helped legalize and sign 688 miles of legal riding in Pa. The goal with the help of Governor Wolfs recent signing of the Fiscal Code HB 1929 is to have 1400 miles of legal riding running from the Snow Shoe Rails to Trails the whole way to the NY state line by 2024. One of the first phases of the development is to link the Bloody Skillet to the Whiskey Springs state trail system through the town of Renovo to be completed by April of 2020. CMATVA also joined together with Snow Shoe Rails to Trails to cover the cost of signage to any township that opens their roads. Much of our work has focused on mapping the existing roads and trails that have the potential to connect towns, villages, and landmarks. Recently, we have worked on mapping out all the open township roads in Potter County and connecting them to Denton Hill trail system and Cross Fork. In 2018 we have expanded into Clearfield and Tioga Counties. We thank the SSRTA for joining with our association on this venture. We also are grateful for the support PAOHV has provided in resources and contacts. The last couple of years have been very productive and we expect big things for the future. Please stay tuned. O

The trikes held an exhibition race on Saturday All Photos Here
By: Jim Bull The outdoor race season kicked off here in AMA District 6 in MidMarch on a chilly day at the Pagoda Motorcycle club. The sun was high in the sky but mother nature whipped up a steady breeze that kept racers honkered down between motos. The weekend kicked off on Saturday with open practice for racers and a special three wheeled trike exhibition race in the afternoon. The local group known as TRUPA has been working hard to get the trikes back on the scene and this year have put together a series that hits several tracks in the region.
Cody Hegeman is the man to beat in 250 C
Sunday awoke to early morning service with the #tattudepreacher Kevin Kolb from Sick Recovery racing before the morning practice sessions began. After that racers took to the track for a great day of racing. The turnout was fair given the fact that a NE LLQ qualifier was happening at the same time not far away at Budds Creek. Check out the top five finishers here along with some pics then hit up the Pagoda website to see the full results at: www.pagodamc.org and check out all the race images at: www.brappmag.com Pagodas next event is a D2 Series practice and series race on the weekend of April 13-14. B Todd Weindel wins Senior A and 45 plus
Brandon Wolfe soars to both amateur B class wins
Rick Yurkovic wins Senior C and 50 plus

AMSOIL Dirt Bike Products Maximize Performance of Bike and Rider Whether you ride to take the checkered flag or conquer the trails near home, AMSOIL has you covered. DIRT BIKE PRODUCTS MAXIMIZE PERFORMANCE Most dirt bike riders have one goal in mind when they hit the track or trail: ride faster and more effectively. Clutch performance goes a long toward ensuring you get out front and stay out front. Clutch slippage or inconsistent clutch feel can lead to poor starts out of the gate, while maneuvering around obstacles on the trail increases the opportunity for clutch slippage if low-quality lubricants are used. CONSISTENT CLUTCH FEEL IMPORTANT AMSOIL Synthetic Dirt Bike Oil’s superior friction-durability properties help minimize clutch slippage, fade and chatter, giving riders consistent clutch feel during takeoffs or when navigating the trail. In an extreme simulated-start test, AMSOIL Synthetic Dirt Bike Oil continued to deliver consistent clutch feel following 32 simulated race starts, while a leading manufacturer’s oil demonstrated inconsistent clutch-lever action and poor clutch feel after 16 starts. AMSOIL Synthetic Dirt Bike Oil’s superior performance helps instill in riders the confidence that their bikes will perform consistently in all types of riding conditions. It also delivers superior wear protection for engine and clutch components. Some riders, however, prefer a dedicated transmission fluid instead of a multi-purpose motor oil. For them, AMSOIL Synthetic Dirt Bike Transmission Fluid features a wet-clutch-compatible formulation designed to prevent clutch slippage and deliver consistent, confident clutch feel. It helps you ride smoother and faster for maximum performance. It also provides excellent wear protection for gears and clutch plates, reducing time and money spent on maintenance. DON’T OVERLOOK CHAIN AND FUEL MAINTENANCE Although easy to overlook, the chain is another important area to maintain. In order to ensure optimum performance and life, dirt bike chains require premium lubrication and protection against dirt, mud, water and constant stress. AMSOIL Chain Lube doesn’t fling off, helping you avoid the hassles of frequent reapplication and the stresses of worrying about chain durability. Degraded fuel presents major problems for dirt bike engines. It can form varnish, gum and insoluble debris that clog carburetors, fuel injectors and fuel filters. Carbon buildup can form on the tops of pistons, causing pre-ignition, rough idling and poor throttle response. AMSOIL Quickshot® is formulated to thoroughly clean and restore peak performance in dirt-bike fuel systems. Its revolutionary technology addresses problems associated with ethanol, water and dirty pump gas. Check out the full line of Amsoil products at: www.rebellioussynthetics.com

RACER REVIEW DAYTONA AMATEUR SX CHAMPION DEREK LEATHERMAN Age: 15
CHAPLAINS JimBull TALKS CORNER By: Jim Bull IT’S A NEW SEASON – ARE YOU ON THE RIGHT TRACK I know many of you have probably been riding all winter long and your used to being on the track, but there are also many who may have not ridden for a while. Maybe you don’t feel like you’re on track or ready for the season to start. Just like with racing, life can get this way at times too. Maybe we get a little side tracked or we’re influenced by outside sources. Maybe we’re just tired of trying all the time or doing our best to do the right things.
Hometown: New Oxford, PA Years Racing: 11 Classes: School Boy 2 Bike: Suzuki RMZ250 Race #: 44 Other Hobbies: None Favorite music: Rap Favorite movie: None Sponsors: Mom and Dad, MPR, Oneal, Scott, Moto Tech, Hair Hut. Past Accomplishments: A few MDRA Championships on minis, 4 class wins at Motorama 2019, Daytona Amateur SX Champion 2019 in 250C and 250C Ltd. Who got you into racing: My uncle was a racer and he got me started. What do you like most about racing: The fun and the adrenaline rush.
If this is the case, please don’t get discouraged because there is an answer. a way to help you get “back on track” or to find the right track. Lets read below what the Bible and Pastor Rick Warren has to say about the subject. HERE’S HOW GOD KEEPS YOU ON TRACK By Rick Warren — March 14, 2019 “He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake” (Psalm 23:3 NIV). Life is composed of starts and stops. When I took a couple guys from our staff for a hike one day, I noticed that we had both starts and stops along the way. We stopped to look at something on the side of the trail; we started again. We checked the trail maps; we paused for breaks. On your journey in life, you’re not always walking. It will always include starts and stops. In fact, there are some things you’ll need to stop doing and some things you’ll need to start doing. When you know what those are, you’ll be prepared to see the signs from God that, in his goodness, he has set all along the way. If David were writing Psalm 23:3 today, he might say, “God keeps me on track.” The Good Shepherd doesn’t just feed us. He leads us. He doesn’t just correct us. He directs us. You may wonder then, “Why is it so difficult to figure out what God wants me to do with my life? Why does God’s will often seem hidden? Is God playing games with me? Does God enjoy confusing me?” Of course not. God has given us a roadmap: the Bible. God has given us a compass: our conscience. God has also given us a personal guidance counselor: the Holy Spirit. Clearly, God wants to lead us in the paths of righteousness. This is important to understand, because God never intended for you to figure out the steps of your journey without him. How you get on mission and how you succeed at your mission are God’s responsibilities. Your responsibility is to seek his guidance and obey his directions. Think About It In the past, how did you know if a decision you made was in line with God’s will? How do you view God’s will differently after reading this devotional? In what ways do you think the Holy Spirit guides you in the paths of righteousness? Like racing, life can throw many obstacles at you. I ASK YOU TO THINK ABOUT THE ABOVE WORDS AND FOR QUESTIONS OR PRAYER CONTACT US HERE OR ON FACEBOOK AT “JIM BULL TALKS”
When was your first race: I was 4 years old at Happy Ramblers. How did you do: No clue, probably not real good. Goals for 2019: Hit some of the bigger races and finish in the top 10 – my ultimate goal is a Loretta Lynn Championship. The One to Watch in 2019: It seems like every year there’s that one rider who just steps it up and really takes off. They’ve always been solid but all the sudden, something clicks. Many times, like maybe in this case it’s a move up to the big bikes. We’ve been watching the number 44 of Derek Leatherman at the local tracks for years now. He has always been a front runner and I really started to notice him in the last year or two riding the Supermini bike. This kid on the yellow 44 didn’t win all the time, but he was always there and pushing. Fast forward to Motorama 2019 and Leatherman comes out on top with four solid wins. Then he heads to one of the biggest races of the year, the Ricky Carmichael Amateur Supercross at Daytona and comes home with two top spots and a third place finish after just moving up to the big bikes. A fluke maybe, my bet is no. I don’t know about you, but like this months cover says – DL44 just may be the one to watch in 2019. Certainly time will tell. B
