Happy Memorial Day everyone - yes I know it’s almost 30 days away but it’s such an important holiday so I wanted to ask you to think of it awhile. Yes Memorial Day is a Monday off work, a day to grill out with your family, maybe even an extra race day in the calendar which is all good stuff. Many people recognize it as the official start of summer here in America but what it really boils down to is a day of remembrance, a day of thanks and a day to be proud of our heritage. From History.com - Memorial Day, an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. So there is your history lesson for the month and a request to think about, and honor those who have died and continue to die so we can do the things we love to do. On to the racing now, yes the race season all of the sudden is in full swing. It seems that it took a while to get moving with all the crazy weather we had early on but we’re hard at it now. All of the race series we represent have their openers in the books and its full speed ahead. In our pages this month find a mix of motocross, flat track and harescramble racing plus a ride review on Hondas Big Adventure bike the Africa Twin. You’ll find our regular where to ride and upcoming event sections along with my thoughts on how to better prepare for the upcoming amateur championships. In other news Speed Citi found a new owner and is now known as Middleford MX. They offer open practice there and are kicking off a seven round Supercross series in May - see their ad inside our pages for more info. Also remember we are still looking for a new owner at Dutchmen MX - a true opportunity for the right individual so please pass the word. As usual we thank you for reading and ask that you all log in and check out our digital issue online. I know most of you are following along on social media but it’s critical for us that you are reading on the BrappMagApp or by clicking in through our website. Your reads will keep us at the track! And as always - if you have suggestions on what you want to see or how we could do it differently, were all ears. So we thank you all for reading and we’ll see you soon out on the track or the trail. Doublin Gap MX Park June 10 - 12, 20 Photos By: Ken Hovance and BrappMa
Photos: Leigha Rotz See more images at: https://leigha-rotz991.smugmug.com The MDRA opened their 2017 season at the Happy Ramblers MC Club in early April. Brapp Magazine couldn’t be there but Leigha Rotz was gracious enough to share some of her great photos with us while still grabbing two overall wins on the day. Make sure you check out all her images from this race and many others at the link above.
This was it, the big show, the last gateway in the NE anyway Loretta Lynn Amateur National Championships. I know m have already qualified in other regions and the South East printing but after this particular race.
It was a great day for racing and from what I hear the competition was good. A few names that stand out on the day are Derek Leatherman in the mini divisions. Derek has been keeping his Suzukis in the front of the pack this year and I expect to see great things from him. Owen Long also grabbed his first overall racing in the 85cc divisions.
Over 900 riders made their way to the Doublin Gap MX burg, PA to take a shot for their entry ticket. I saw one cla the whole way from Utah to make the cut. It was a typical preparation for Tennessee, hot and dusty and great compet promoter for keeping everything running smoothly and fo track for this event.
The School Boy divisions were red hot too, we have a talent pool here in our region in these classes and any one of several racers could come out on top in any given weekend. The age classes are the same with many long time friends doing battle each and every weekend. Please check out the top five finishers here then head over to: www. mdramxracing.com to see the rest. The MDRA has two events in May you should check out. The first being at Doublin Gap MX on May 5-6 then the series heads west to the always popular Pleasure Valley on May 27-28. B

AHRMA Mid Atlantic Sets Record at Round #1 Rocket Raceway Three Springs, Pa
The series grows every year, come join the fun!
S
MORE PIC HERE
The Potomac Vintage Riders opened their 2017 season at Rocket Raceway under sunny skies and warm temperatures. They say what a difference a year can make and they must know what they’re talking about this time. Series promoter Dave Kutskel announced at the riders meeting that last year at this opening round that there was still some snow on the ground and temps were in the teens at 8am to start the day. No matter, Mother Nature changed her tune this year and along with the great weather came 87 riders; some racing both the morning and afternoon race to set a record for this series that I think is in its fourth season. 37 riders took off on the five mile course at Rocket for the morning vintage race. Brian Grove would take his Honda to a full minute win over series promoter Dave Kutskel, followed by WER Suspension guru and former ISDE champ Drew Smith in third.
Honda mount Brian Grove wins the morning vintage race.
The afternoon post vintage race would see 64 competitors line up with 20 time ISDE Gold Medal winner Fred Hoess beating the pack by over 7 minutes. I got to speak with Fred after the event and he is such a humble guy who has raced all over the world. Second and third place spots would round out the same as the morning race with Kutskel in second followed by Smith in third. This series consists of mostly harescramble rounds with a new Enduro Series being added this year. The day is divided into two race groups with a class designed for just about all skill levels and size bikes built before 1995. The vintage race in the morning for an hour on a closed wooded course then the post vintage and more skilled groups race in the afternoon for another hour. Many riders enter two bikes and race both time slots. No special memberships are needed other than AMA and the day is designed for fun and friendly competition.
This old Yammie DT got around the woods pretty good.
I’d recommend if you have an old bike sitting around the garage to blow the dust off of it and come out and have a good time. If not, maybe you should consider grabbing one and joining the fun. Like Fred Hoess said, half the fun is just keeping the old bikes going and banging around with your buddies on a weekend afternoon. Some events are Saturday and some are held on Sunday. You can find their full schedule on Facebook by searching AHRMA Mid Atlantic Vintage Racing and check out www.brappmag.com to see more Images from todays event on our photo page link. There are two rounds in May with the first on May 7th in Reynoldsville, PA and then again on May 21st in Harmony Grove, PA. Grab a bike and come race or come on out for a fun day of spectating. You can also check out today’s full race results at:
http://www.moto-tally.com/AHRMA-NA/Results.aspx Riding the old bikes is a blast and sometimes a challenge.

After attending a PVR Vintage HS for the second time in as many years I was in awe as I witnessed a local American Icon racing legend ride the wheels off his 1985 vintage Husqvarna race bike and pretty much crush the competition. At the riders meeting I heard series promotor Dave K. say that Fred liked to keep to himself but I had to approach him anyways and ask for an interview. After all it’s not too many men alive that carry the credentials that this humble but willing to talk racer does.

If you’re not familiar with an ISDE - it’s a 6 day offroad race over some of the roughest terrains found on earth, Individuals and country teams compete to see who is “the best in the world”. Last year Fred returned and raced in the Vintage class and earned his 20th Gold Medal aboard a 1986 Husqvarna 250WR which happened to be one of his factory race bikes from back in the day.

Dealers Welcome
Fred was born and raised in New Jersey and began racing at 8 years old in the Netra off road series. Matter of fact on this day he got to compete against one of his long time sponsors and friends Drew Smith, owner of WER Products but Drew was also one of his first inspirations when he raced for Team USA many years ago. Fred went on to race professionally for Husqvarna over three decades in the 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. He returned last year to chase that 20th gold medal and succeeded. Fred is also an industry veteran and works for BMW North America. Fred asked that we thank his long time sponsors for helping him through his racing career: WER/Drew Smith, MSR, SIDI, Arai Helmets, Spectro Oils, FMF, Motion Pro and Halls Husqvarna. B

Pagoda MC Club - Season Opener April 9, 2017 - Photos by: Don Fink
The Pagoda MC Club near Reading, PA had their motocross season opener in early April. This round was originally scheduled as round 2 on their 2017 schedule but Mother Nature was wreaking havoc back in March. Brapp Magazine could not attend this round but club member Don Fink was on hand to handle all the photog duties. Don does a great job for the club and also attends many District 6 rounds so check him out on FB to see lots more images. Delaware pro Coty Schock would attend on the day to win both premiere expert divisions and AMS rider Brando Wolfe would grab a couple of School Boy wins on the day. Watch Brandon this year as he has appeared to step it up a notch. Check out the top 5 finishers here today and get all the info you need about Pagoda at: www.PAGODAMC.org. Next up they have their first junk car race of the year on May 6th - if you’re looking for a good time make sure you check that out and their next motocross race falls on May 20-21. Trust in the fact that if you take the time to complete these exercises that it will make a difference in your finishes at Loretta’s. REMEMBER – THERE’S LOTS OF FAST KIDS. It’s the one’s that go the extra mile that will rise to the top. (if your racer is under 10 years old they will probably need lots of involvement from you to make this work.) YOU’VE MADE THE FINANCIAL INVESTMENT – THIS WILL SEAL THE DEAL. So you’re going through the qualifying process to head to Tennessee to compete in the biggest race of the year. You or your parents/sponsors have spent a lot of money on bikes and equipment. You’ve been traveling all over the country to qualify. You ride every chance you get. You eat right and go to the gym. You train on your bicycle or run day after day trying to build your endurance to compete in the heat. SO YOU’RE READY TO GO – RIGHT? YOU’VE DONE EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO DO YOUR BEST – RIGHT? DO YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU’RE GOING TO WIN? OR IS THERE SOME DOUBT THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED SOMETHING THAT MAYBE THERE’S SOMEBODY OUT THERE THAT JUST MIGHT BE A LITTLE BETTER PREPARED?
SO YOURE PROBABLY WONDERING WHEN IM GOING TO LET YOU IN ON THE SECRET AND IF YOU CAME THIS FAR, YOU HAVE A GREAT CHANCE AT WINNING
I know – reading is lame. But it is the few that do the most that will receive the greatest success. I will tell you that if everything else comes together in Tennessee, your bike doesn’t break or the racer beside you doesn’t take you out and you do what I’m about to ask you to do. YOU WILL BE A CHAMPION NO IFS, ANDS OR BUTS, YOU WILL BE A CHAMPION…
LESSON STARTS HERE
YOU HAVE TO DO THE FOLLOWING THINGS EVERY DAY THE BEST RESULTS WILL HAPPEN IF YOU DO THEM
THREE TIMES EACH DAY It doesn’t matter if you’re four or forty – the same principles apply. Here is the most important thing you need to know. YOU’RE BRAIN CAN’T TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOMETHING YOU IMAGINE or SOMETHING THAT REALLY HAPPENS That means if you can see or believe that something will or can happen
IT CAN…
Many people say – they’ll believe it when they see it. TRUTH IS You have to believe it – then you’ll see it.
YOU HAVE TO IMAGINE YOU WINNING THE BIG RACE OR IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN I’ve been around this sport for over 30 years and every time I hear the following statement from a racer – I know their chances are slim. My Goal is to be in the top 10. And that’s an ok goal if you want to finish in the top 10 – that’s a great finish. No matter what you want to accomplish at Loretta’s You need to set the goal – you have to write it down and you have to look at it every day, over and over again. MAKE THIS YOUR GOAL I’M GOING TO WIN ALL MY MOTOS AT LORETTA’S If you tell yourself over and over again
YOU’RE RIGHT – THERE IS ONE MORE THING YOU NEED TO DO IT’S THE LAST PIECE OF THE PUZZLE THAT MOST OF US MISS BOTH IN THIS SPORT and IN LIFE The good news is that we still have time. Time to give you the edge you need to get on the top of the box. The even better news is that it’s the easiest part of your training that you will need to do and it is FREE Like riding however, you need to do it every day and
YOU NEED TO START NOW Do it now, do it now, do it now… Some things to think about… From the Huffington Post.com
The ones, who are crazy enough to think they can win, are the ones that do. ~Anonymous Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great. ~John D. Rockefeller I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have. ~Thomas Jefferson The starting point of all achievement is desire. ~Napolean Hill There are two types of people who will tell you that you cannot win at Loretta’s, those who are afraid to try and those who are afraid you will succeed. ~Jim Bull
16 BRAPP MAGAZINE May 2017
I’M GOING TO WIN ALL MY MOTOS AT LORETTA’S What do you think might happen? Let me ask you this – what if this was your goal. I’m going to finish top 10 in my class at Loretta’s What do you think might happen? That’s right – you’re gonna go 2- 8 - 23 and if you’re really lucky you might finish 9th or 10th overall. And trust me – there is nothing wrong with that. Just by making the show you have accomplished more than thousands and thousands of other racers have. YOU ARE ALREADY A CHAMPION. BUT IF YOU WANT TO WIN – REALLY WANT TO WIN. TELL YOURSELF AT LEAST THREE TIMES EVERYDAY, OUT LOUD I’M GOING TO WIN ALL MY MOTOS AT LORETTA’S I want you to make signs and hang them around the house, in the bathroom, on the fridge, on your ceiling in your room, I want you to see that message everywhere you go. I want you to write a RAP song about it and sing it all day long and I want you to email it to me so I know you’re doing it. brappmag@gmail.com You have to be accountable to somebody. What’s the worst that could happen? You go 1 - 1 - 4 because some squid took you out on the start. WHATS THE BEST THAT COULD HAPPEN THAT’S RIGHT – YOU WIN ALL YOUR MOTOS AT LORETTA’S
C’MON – KEEP READING – WE’RE ALMOST DONE Here’s another really important truth that you have to understand. People will try to destroy your chances of winning and they won’t even know they are doing it. So here’s what you have to do. This message goes out to the racer, the parent, the spouse, the sibling, the best friend. Please help your racer accomplish their goals. DO NOT PUT ANY DOUBTS IN THEIR MIND Here’s what I mean… You have to believe you can win and don’t let anybody else tell you anything different. What do they know – are they the one that is racing? Do they know what you can or cannot accomplish? Of course they don’t…
Another great exercise is to write your PAP page out in sentence form over and over again. Do it three times each day. It won’t take you long but it will definitely get it in your head. Remember what we said in the beginning: YOU’RE BRAIN CAN’T TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOMETHING YOU IMAGINE or SOMETHING THAT REALLY HAPPENS. Follow the instructions in this report and you will finish better at Loretta’s than if you don’t do the exercises. I dare you to give it a try… Thank you for reading this FREE Report Please share it with all your friends. I would like to know what you think of it and how it has helped you after the race. Watch for other FREE Reports coming soon!
DO NOT LISTEN TO ANYBODY
And if you’re interested in other training products or mental coaching please contact me directly at:
IF THEY ARE TELLING YOU THAT YOU CAN’T WIN POLITELY TELL THEM THAT YOU HAVE SOMEWHERE ELSE TO BE AND GET AWAY FROM THEM AS FAST AS YOU CAN.
brappmag@gmail.com 717.951.5620 www.brappmag.com
This is so important – please ask everyone you know to support you and your beliefs until this race is over. If they won’t then you need to UN FRIEND them right away. Ok – there’s one more thing you need to do. You need to write yourself a PAP Page. Take 10 things you need to improve on or want to believe or accomplish and make a list. Some examples: I’m the fastest kid in my class My corner speed is getting better everyday I get the holeshot every time 2017 is my year No one can catch me I love racing in the heat My bikes are the best I’m grateful for everything I have My sponsors are the best Joe Racer (you’re name here) is the 2017 Amateur National Champion in 250 B (whatever class) You can use some of my ideas or you can come up with your own. The important thing is that you make this list and read it out loud to yourself at least three times every day. The more you do it – the faster you’ll be…
Additional Help If Interested Make yourself a Gratitude Log It is sometimes a good idea to combine this in a notebook with your PAP Page. A Gratitude Log is a notebook where you can jot down five things you are grateful for each morning. It is the best way to start your day. You start your day by reading your PAP Page then you insert the date and write down five things you are grateful for that morning. Next – find yourself a higher power and let it guide you. It may be the Holy Spirit, or the universe or any other God you believe to be your creator. Be thankful to your higher power each and every day. Ask for abundance in all you do. Be kind to others. And find your reason for being. I believe you can accomplish anything you want. B

BEING THANKFUL
MOTOCROSS:
You know it seems the more time goes by the more I realize how thankful I am for the things that I have. It certainly is very easy to take things for granted, isn’t it? I don’t know if it’s what our society teaches us or if it’s just human nature but either way I am finding that by stopping each morning to give thanks for the things that I do have makes life more enjoyable. I mean who wants to go through life in a “state of want” all the time?

SO LET’S SEE WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT IT: 1 THESSALONIANS 5:18 - Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. (NLT)
This month’s inspiration came not only from the bible but from long time MAMA racer Bryce Reeves. I have a habit of asking people “whats up” and Bryce just happened to be standing near me while I was taking pictures at Southfork and he said something like “God first, then family, then mx” and that sparked our conversation and the basis for this article. It turns out about a year ago Bryce suffered from a brain hemorrhage which led to a stroke and heart failure which almost took his life. He ended up in the hospital for about a week and a half and till this day still doesn’t have full use of the left side of his body. He told me that after spending 41 years racing motocross and raising his kids at the track and watching them grow up racing that there was no way he could stop, that he had to find a way to stay on the bike. It was a year to the day after Bryce was released from the hospital that he crawled back on the bike at Tomahawk earlier this year. He’s had to retrain his body and learn to compensate with his right to make the left side of his body work. Bryce told me he always believed in God but his health experience made everything he thought he already believed come to reality. He believes that because of God that he is still here racing and for that he is most thankful. Bryce said if the race was to the first turn only that he could still win every time

FLAT TRACK: So I’ll ask you, what are you thankful for? Do you stop to think about it on a regular basis or do you unconsciously go through your days looking for more? Please don’t miss understand the point I’m trying to get across. I too am a believer in setting goals and always striving to do your best - here I’m talking about the things that we sometimes take for granted. Maybe it’s the things our family does for us on a regular basis that we’ve come to expect or possibly a coworker that pulls some extra weight for you on a day that you’re a little sluggish. Maybe it’s the fact that we just woke up today and aren’t in pain and all our body parts work. I would ask you to think about it and even to write it down. I’ve found a good little habit to form is the minute you wake up to think about three things you are thankful for that morning. Maybe start a journal and write it down every day but more importantly if your thankful for someone in your life or the things that they do for you - let them know about it, just don’t assume that they already know. Ride Review - 2017 Honda Africa Twin DCT Courtesy of Velocity Cycles - Mechanicsburg, PA By Jim Bull It was the bike dreams were made of - at least for a young off road rider from years gone by. Yes it was my dream back in the 1980’s, my buddy Scott and I would sit around and talk about racing the Baja 1000. We would read about the Paris Daker races in the motorcycle pubs and see the big Honda off road bikes that we unfortunate American’s couldn’t get our hands on without the right connections or by moving to Japan or Europe. Yes we had the XR 650, a great bike by anybody’s standards, but if we could only get our hands on one of those big bore Honda’s we’d definitely go do it. Well too many beers and lots of excuses later unfortunately we never made it to Baja. I guess the next best thing would be to wait around a couple of decades and hop on the chance that Velocity Cycles in Mechanicsburg, PA afforded me last month. Yes, finally I got to swing my leg over that big twin cylinder Honda. Granted a much different version from days gone by and I’d have to say thank goodness. Honda really hit the mark with this masterpiece.
Check out Velocity Cycles at: www.velocitycycle.net
Granted I didn’t get to put it through the paces that a Baja would throw at it, but I’ll tell you this. With the right person on it I believe this bike, even in its stock form would handle todays Baja less some tires and probably some upgraded lighting to dodge those crazy Mexican roadblocks in the middle of the night. Anyhow, the gang at Velocity Cycles mounted me up on Hondas DCT version which in reality means a 6-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission with on and off-road riding modes. Wow what a mouthful. At first I was wishing for the manual clutch 6 speed version but then remembered I did tell Chris a few weeks earlier that I wanted to check out Hondas auto clutch set up. So off I went to get a handle on this beast. I rode around the block once or twice just to get a feel for the different shifting options. I believe the intro video that I watched talked about 80 different combinations including on and off road torque variations, adding ABS on and off, there’s a gravity sensor that detects lean and you can shift on the fly from manual to auto shifting. The good news is that I was able to figure it all out pretty quickly for my upcoming 50 mile jaunt. The even better news is if you had this bike to play with for a few days I’m sure you could dial it in perfect for any riding style and skill level. I felt that in the auto mode on the street that the big parallel twin shifted too quickly but in off road situations it worked just about right for me. Again, the beauty in the setup is if you want to be in a different gear or need more power its right at your fingertips and the engine breaking was a welcome addition on those downhill dirt roads. This bike loved to get into 6th gear fast but again the advantage of the big bore - even in 6th gear whether cruising at 35 or at 65, when you twisted the throttle it was all there and away she went.
Check out Velocity Cycles for all your Honda, BMW and Genuine Scooter needs
I was able to ride this baby on the highway, on some nice back road asphalt twisties, up and down the other side of the mountain in dirt road conditions then finish off in lots of traffic coming back through Carlisle. I also got to check out the great stopping power of this dream ride when I came around a corner a little too hot on the asphalt and saw dirt road directly ahead. I clamped the big Hondas breaks and came immediately under control with no threat of laying her down. The other feature that Honda nailed was the low center of mass, this bike although tall handled like a dream and was no challenge for my 5’ 8” frame. I didn’t check the weight on purpose prior to my ride because I didn’t want any pre conceived notions on handling and weight distribution. In actuality the only compliant I have from the whole experience was not taking Chris up on his offer to keep her for the day. I could go on and on about this great ride from Honda but I’d bet you’d get the real story by going online. Check out the website below for more info then head on out to Velocity Cycles and ask Chris or Brandon for your own Africa Twin experience. One caution however, if you don’t want to own one you just better stay home. B
