CHAMBER VIEW

Retail, Membership and more Membership Services Manager Mark Hannigan introduces new members to his team and a new membership package.

Firstly I would like to thank all Chamber members for being welcoming to me over the previous few months as Membership Services Manager. I have been looking at our membership packages and ways to bring new benefits to your membership to make sure you are receiving value. This evaluation of the membership services has led the Chamber to launch a new membership package – Retail Membership. The needs of retailers can be very different from other sectors and we wanted to ensure that we are supporting our town centres and retail hubs; that will hopefully encourage growth in the Barnsley and Rotherham retail sector. I am also pleased to welcome Carrie Knapton and Shane Young into my membership team and the Chamber as a whole. I know Carrie and Shane are looking forward to working with our members, so hopefully you will be seeing them out and about and at our events. Over the next few months we have three of our high-status annual events. I hope to see many of our members at our Chamber Means Business Exhibition on the 11th September, followed by the Doncaster Cup Day at the St Leger Festival on the 13th September and then the Business Awards in October. The Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards are one of the most prestigious events on the business calendar and this year we are welcoming a new host – Hayley Taylor. Hayley is best known for her role as the “Fairy Jobmother” on her Channel 4 show but what many don’t know is that Hayley is also a local businesswoman herself.

Patrons

We are hoping that again this year we can welcome up to 50 local businesses to Magna on the 18th October to celebrate our local achievements and, as ever, competition will be tough. Tickets for the event can be booked by contacting Diane Graham – 01709 386200 or by emailing diane.graham@brchamber.co.uk. A new host for annual Awards

In Association with

Local business woman and Channel 4’s Fairy Jobmother, Hayley Taylor will host this year’s Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards taking place this autumn. Hayley has led a successful career on television for a number of years, not only with her show The Fairy Jobmother, but also with a number of other programmes. Hayley regularly features as an expert on ITV’s Daybreak and has made many other television appearances including the “This Week” programme and the highly acclaimed BBC Panorama’s “Britain on the Brink”. What is little known about Hayley is that long before her TV career she has been an employment and careers tutor for over 22 years in the local area and continues in this role to this day. This year Hayley has successfully launched her second business (an Employment Consultancy), is a Brand Ambassador for companies such as Fish4Jobs and currently delivers several contracts on behalf of Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council School Partnership Trust and Sheffield Hallam University.

Hayley believes that awards are important for the business community. “It is important for businesses to be recognised for the hard work they put in to be successful. People don’t always see the hard work and team work that goes on behind the scenes, so it is vital to acknowledge that success.”

The Awards, in association with Bull Information Systems will recognise the achievements of around 40 companies and individuals at Rotherham’s Magna Science Adventure Centre on Friday 18 October.

“I am incredibly proud to be able to host this year’s Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards, as a local girl I am looking forward to recognising and celebrating the achievements of our regions businesses, particularly following on from the tough times we have had in industry” Hayley added, “As a fellow business person I know how challenging times have been and I encourage all those businesses that have flourished, developed, supported our community and explored international trade to come forward to be honoured for what you have achieved!”

Tickets priced at £60 plus VAT (£550 plus VAT for a table of ten) can be booked by calling 01709 386200.

Who owns an email? This was the question facing the High Court recently when an employer challenged a former employee to hand over emails exchanged in the course of his duties. The answer has led Oxley & Coward Solicitors LLP to advise business to take steps to tighten up internal processes to protect the content of business emails - or face the consequences. The High Court’s judgement in Fairstar Heavy Transport NV v Adkins and another backed up earlier rulings in saying that no one can claim the content of emails because property rights do not exist in information. This position is one that no company using email can afford to ignore. This judgement means that any contractual agreements, such as employment contracts, consultancy agreements or business contracts should include obligations about the use and retention of emails. It should also cover

the return of emails and protect against the distribution of confidential information.

unfair dismissal legislation and the implications for employers and individuals.

Dawn Cherry of Oxley & Coward will be discussing this ruling as well as the practical implications for businesses at the upcoming Chamber Means Business Exhibition at Tankersley Manor, Barnsley on Wednesday 11 September 2013.

Amy Cusworth of Oxley & Coward will be providing a brief update about the Equality Act 2010 three years on, in particular harassment from the perspective of employees and employers.

Mamoon Chaudhary of Oxley & Coward will also be discussing the recent changes in employment law and procedure including the

Employers say ‘fit note’ failing to get people back to work Britain’s manufacturers are calling on the government to convene a summit of employers and the medical profession to tackle sickness absence, following a major survey showing that employers have lost faith in the government’s ‘fit note’ programme. The 2013 EEF/Westfield Health Sickness Absence survey suggests improvements in sickness absence have now plateaued. However, the survey also indicates that manufacturers are becoming increasingly negative about one of the key initiatives tasked with addressing this – the Fit Note - is now failing to help get people back to work. According to the survey, sickness absence rates have plateaued at 2.2% and 2.3% for 2011 and 2012 respectively, having previously fallen from 3% in 2007. The

average number of days lost to absence has shown a minor increase from a low of 5.1 days in 2011 to 5.3 days in 2012. It also showed that the proportion of employees with zero sickness absence rates has also remained static at 51% this year. More manufacturers are reporting that longer-term sickness absence is increasing (40%) rather than decreasing (24%). After surgery, the key causes of long-term absence remain back pain and other musculoskeletal disorders; and stress and other mental health problems. Westfield Health’s Chamber Primary Health Plan, which is available to all members of Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, offers a range of benefits to help staff manage MSDs, including physiotherapy, chiropractic treatment, osteopathy and acupuncture. Paul Shires, Executive Director at Westfield Health said: “The plateau shown in sickness absence levels reflects the clear need for government to invest more time and effort in helping employers manage the health and wellbeing of their staff. “A robust healthcare infrastructure is vital in stimulating economic recovery and, as this survey shows, an increased focus on better evaluating and adapting the strategies already in place such as the ‘Fit Note’ is crucial.”

Why it’s smart to plan your next energy contract Do you usually leave your energy contract renewals until the last minute? Chamber Utilities™ offers three reasons why energy should be top of mind well before your contract renewals are due. 1. Take advantage of dips in the wholesale market The wholesale energy market is volatile, presenting opportunities to buy when prices dip, but equally a substantial risk of paying a premium during a peak. Leaving energy purchasing until the last minute can significantly minimise your options, especially if your contracts are due for renewal when the energy market prices are high. Chamber Utilities™ free Market Price Tracker service provides a simple tool for this. 2. Avoid expensive out of contract tariffs If you fail to renew your existing energy contract you can easily find your business locked into over-inflated ‘out-of-contract’ tariffs for as long as 12 months, paying more than 50% above current rates to your supplier.

you research your options and understand the difference between a fixed, flexible or a collective product. One approach will be more suitable than another depending on your attitude to risk, budgetary requirements and internal plans for efficiency improvements.

Sign up to a free Contract Renewal Reminder service to provide ample time to research the market and find the most competitive contract. 3. Take time to ensure your contract is right for your business With a wide variety of contract types to choose from, you need time to ensure your new contract is right for your needs. Ensure

Awards win for Barrett young gun! Tom Barrett, branch director at Rotherham-based C Roberts, part of the Barrett Steel Group, the UK’s largest independent steel stockholder, has won the prestigious Red Ribbon Award in the ‘Young Gun’ category. He was presented with his award at a dazzling event at the Lancaster London Hotel recently. Hosted by Family Business Place, Red Ribbon is the UK’s only national award to recognise the contribution family businesses of all sizes make to the British economy. James Barrett, Managing Director of the Barrett Steel Group and Tom’s father, explains why he was nominated for the award: “Tom has a natural passion for the business. With his personable and charismatic character he is able to overcome the daily pressures of running a steel business, as well as being part of the sixth generation of the Barrett family. He is a modest young man, who does not shirk his responsibilities and has deservedly earned the respect of his colleagues.”

Dedication ceremony thanks to Morrison Facility Services Shiloh, which helps adults living in poverty to rebuild their lives by providing food, support and information about health and housing, was put at risk when its premises were announced unfit for purpose in September 2010.

The charity faced having to close its doors for good, until Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council offered it the use of a disused gymnasium. Unfortunately the building was a complete shell and needed to be entirely renovated and fitted out in order to make it viable for Shiloh’s use. It was at this point that repairs and maintenance service provider Morrison came forward and offered its assistance as part of its community development programme, including project managing

the entire build and providing all of the labour and tools free of charge. At a dedication ceremony, Sarah Champion MP and the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Rotherham unveiled a Plaque dedicating the main lounge as the “Morrison Room”. Mark Waterhouse, Regional Director, Morrison said: “When those who help others need help themselves, we stepped in. It has been an amazing project to be involved with. It is a humbling experience to have been recognised this way.”

Introducing the South Yorkshire International Trade Forum SYITF is the leading independent organisation in our region promoting the export activities of its member companies to increase their international trade activities. Its success in recent years has been recognised by UKTI, Chambers of Commerce, and the Sheffield City Region LEP as a ‘voice’ for exporting companies in the region, so much so that UKTI invited the Forum to take a trade mission to a country of its choice earlier this year. After consultation with members, it took a group of companies to Singapore in February 2013, primarily to research the potential in the aerospace and oil & gas sectors. The Forum holds 6 bi-monthly events each year, 4 of which are focussed on geographical

target markets identified by members, and 2 events focussing on topical issues ranging from the global economy to the importance of social media in marketing. One of the most important reasons behind the success of the Forum has been the quality of these events. Great emphasis is put on the quality of the presenters and the endeavour to not only have a representative from the country itself, but also a case study presented by an SYITF member, sharing their own experiences in the country. Members then contribute to a lively Q & A session.

MANUFACTURING

Women of Steel During World Wars I and II, thousands of women were drafted into the steel factories of South Yorkshire. The women, often in their twenties, left behind their normal lives of running homes and raising children in order to contribute to the war effort and keep the factories running.

In the noisy, challenging and often dangerous surroundings the young women worked tirelessly under the threat of air raids to ensure the iconic steel factories of the region carried on running smoothly, churning out world class artillery and armour to keep up with the demand. By the end of the war, instead of being celebrated and congratulated, the women were simply dismissed from the factories as the men returned from war to work. The Women of Steel returned back to their normal lives of running homes and raising children and for years their outstanding effort went unrecognised. Now there is a project, co-ordinated by Sheffield City Council, to celebrate a special group of women whose exceptional work ethic, stamina and bravery in the steel factories went unrecognised for years. The Women of Steel project will produce

a permanent memorial in recognition of women across the region who served their country by working in the steel industry. Highly renowned designer Martin Jennings has been commissioned to design and craft the memorial sculpture due his creative vision, and his signature aesthetic of bronze or silver sculptures. The statue will be bronze in colour and to human scale. It will be unveiled in Barkers Pool, where the infamous Blitz struck Sheffield in WW2.

The aim of the project now is to raise the £150,000 needed to produce the memorial. Businesses and individuals can pledge their support for the project by visiting the Women of Steel Just Giving page – www.justgiving.com/womenofsteel

The Women of Steel Concert The Women of Steel will become Women of Rock in November when the region’s music stars and entertainers present a sparkling concert in the Sheffield City Hall to raise money to erect a statue in their honour. With more acts still to be announced the evening is set to be one to remember with performances already confirmed from; Heaven 17, Eliot Kennedy, John Shuttleworth, ABC’s Martin Fry, John Reilly and Boy on a Dolphin, Baby Bird, Philippa Hanna, John Tams, Ray Hearne, Joann Fletcher and Cornerstone Brass, who’ve just become regional champions. Plus appearances from: Dean Andrews from hit TV show Life on Mars, Reverend and the Makers’ Jon McClure and Hirsty from Capital Radio.

All acts are appearing for free in tribute to the hundreds of women whose commitment, hard work and good nature made an amazing contribution to the country during the World Wars, by uncomplainingly taking on the men’s jobs in the steel works. Make your evening extra special with a Yorkshire inspired VIP Hospitality Supper before the concert. Enjoy a welcome drink, followed by a three course dinner with coffee to finish. You will then be escorted to your premium seats where you can enjoy the concert without having to rush from restaurant to theatre. During the interval you will be taken to a private hospitality room away from the crowds, where you can enjoy a pre-order refreshment.

Following the concert the entertainment doesn’t stop there as an after show party will continue in the Ballroom. Tickets for the Women of Steel Concert, priced at £22, £20 (subject to booking fees) at Sheffield City Hall are available online through at www.sheffieldcityhall. co.uk through the ticket hotline on 0114 2 789 789 and in person at the Sheffield City Hall Box Office. The concert is in aid of the Women of Steel and led is by John Palmer, former Director of Communications at Sheffield Hallam University.

Things are on the up! According to the analyst firm, Forrester Research, the IT market is expected to grow by 4.6% in 2014. Spiceworks (the social business network) also states that SMBs are continuing to expand their IT budgets and the recent announcement about the 0.6% growth of the UK economy also suggests improved business and consumer confidence. So what are companies spending their IT budget on? It seems that the majority of the focus will be on Software, boosted by purchases of mobile apps. It is likely that the type of software spend will change from traditional software licensing purchases to more subscription based solutions - less of a one-off spend and more of a monthly subscription-based pricing model. Other areas that businesses of all sizes are increasingly interested in are collaboration technologies, cloud services and virtualisation. SMBs are starting to recognise the benefits that can be gained from

investing in IT to support their businesses and enable future growth. At Highlander we are really starting to see a shift towards cloud solutions as businesses get more comfortable with the concept. Outside the United States, Western Europe is embracing cloud services most rapidly with 48% of UK organisations surveyed recently stating they are already using some cloudbased services. The hybrid approach, where companies gain a balance between onpremise and cloud services, is a great way forward with the majority of businesses.

We understand that trust in your service provider is still of paramount importance – 84% of customers surveyed said they want an established relationship with a vendor before they would trust them as a cloud Service Provider.

Brinsworth Academy of Engineering launch apprentice training agency Brinsworth Academy of Engineering is celebrating its new apprenticeship service. The organisation has joined forces with Stafforce Apprenticeship Training Agency (ATA). Acting as a recruitment agency, the ATA hires out apprentices to ‘host’ employers, matching a suitable apprentice to the organisation’s requirements. By employing the apprentice directly through the ATA, this eliminates the costly recruitment process and provides support for the company through managing the apprentices’ wages, holidays and any training they may need. Paul Brammer, Director of Services at Stafforce says, “We’re looking forward to developing a strategic partnership with

Brinsworth Engineering Academy and working together to help engineering businesses in the Yorkshire area benefit from apprenticeships and engage with new talent” The academy hopes to see more employers take on apprenticeships via this service and utilise the offer using the new-style delivery of apprenticeship training in the engineering sector. Paul Reeves Business Development Director for Brinsworth Academy said: “We are pleased to be able to add to our apprenticeship offer through this route.

The skills and expertise that apprentices bring to businesses are vital to the local and wider economy.”

Apprenticeship Competition is a win-win This is the second year that Thomas Rotherham College and Kostal UK have collaborated on a competition for students with an apprenticeship as the first prize. The project involves recruiting students who study subjects that give them relevant basic skills (in this case Maths, Physics, Business, Modern Foreign Languages) and setting them a challenge designed by Kostal, which they work on over a number of weeks. During this time they spend a morning at Kostal to increase their understanding of the business and participate in support meetings where they are able to share their ideas as well as get help and advice from Kostal employees.

Wendy Robson, Senior Student Support Manager at Thomas Rotherham College said “The project is a brilliant example of the mutual benefits that collaboration between educators and local employers can bring.

After several weeks of work, from internet searches on issues such as patents to hunting around scrap yards for bits of cars, students prepare and deliver a formal presentation of their ideas to a Kostal judging panel. This year’s panel included the first year’s winner James Doyle. The final stage in the competition is a presentation of awards by Kostal Managing Director Martin Wood. Winners this year were Jennifer Betts and Alex Ashton who won over the judges with their idea to develop parametric speakers in the roof of cars to enable each individual passenger to listen to something different without the need for headphones. Alex is now on a summer work placement at the company.

Omnichannel Opportunities Ann Cadman, Director of The Source Skills Academy, looks at how omnichannel retailing offers exciting opportunities for customers, retail brands and shopping destinations. “From eCommerce to mCommerce, multichannel to omnichannel, we’ve seen a real shift in how leading retail brands and shopping destinations see the Internet over the last ten years, and of course a transformation in how people use it.

mobile and in-store. Omnichannel takes this to the next level, offering shoppers a seamless experience at every touchpoint.

Omnichannel in action: click and collect

From being afraid of using their credit cards online, UK consumers are now happy to spend via laptop, tablet and smartphone. The Centre for Retail Research put UK online sales at over £50 billion in 2011 – or 12% of UK retail trade, up from 8.6% in 2008. According to the BCSC, this is expected to rise to 25% by 2020. For me, omnichannel is one of the most exciting things happening in retail at the moment. Done well, it delivers true convenience to shoppers, making it easier for them to browse and buy. For retailers, it provides an array of opportunities to interact with customers, helping build brand image and deliver a consistent experience that can drive sales.

So what is omnichannel? Omnichannel retailing is generally seen as the evolution of multichannel retailing, which gave shoppers the chance to browse and purchase via multiple channels - online,

than someone who uses only one channel – and that omnichannel shoppers spend 15% to 30% more than multichannel shoppers.

The range of brands offering shoppers the chance to buy online and collect in store is on the rise. This is a great example of how technology can help retailers increase sales and drive traffic to their outlets.

This means people can access identical products, prices and deals, get the same service and receive a consistent experience, whether they are interacting with the brand through a bricks and mortar unit, website, social networking tool, catalogue, mobile site or app.

So is it worth it?

Retailers without large, well-located store networks can also use services like Collect Plus and ByBox lockers to give consumers access to their full product range online, giving them the option to collect or return purchases from convenient locations, including local corner shops.

A final thought It’s also worth noting that not everything can go online. Many people enjoy the shopping experience and consumers often want their products now. This usually means a physical store.”

Yes. Research from IDC Retail Insights shows that multichannel shoppers spend, on average, 15% to 30% more with a retailer

Shops “Pop-Up” in Rotherham It’s a familiar sight on high streets across the country, businesses that have struggled in the current economic downturn to the point of being forced to re-locate or, even worse, close down. This leaves behind a legacy of vacant units that, on some occasions, remain un-occupied for a significant period of time. A joint project between RMBC, Shop Local, Gallery Town and its contractor Rainforest Graphics Limited has given a new lease of life to a run of empty units on the Rotherham Street, Domain Lane by installing false shop fronts.

Solar Europa And Chamber Develop Business Package Solar Europa and the Chamber have worked together to develop a package for businesses for which the consumption of environmentally friendly electricity will bring much needed long-term cost savings. every ton of emissions produced by Industry in consuming carbon creating energy the CRC is charged at ÂŁ16 per ton.

Solar Europa provides the solar PV system free of charge to businesses. In exchange for the free system, Solar Europa requires the business to enter an agreement to consume the Green Electricity generated by the system. This Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is for a period of 20 years saving up to 50 per cent of grid prices and will not only secure a material reduction in utility based electricity costs but will also protect against energy price inflation (historically at least more than 3 per cent above RPI and rising) as a result of linking increases to RPI only. The electricity costs are agreed at the outset, on signing the PPA and incorporated into the contract. The contract is portable so should a member decide to sell its business or move

premises the new owners can also benefit from low cost electricity. The UK has now introduced the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) which is a direct business tax calculated by reference to the energy that a business consumes and the carbon created in producing that energy. For

This tax could prove to be ruinous to every size of business over 25 to 30 years. By generating renewable energy from solar PV this reduces the consumption of electricity created from carbon creating sources so it is not only the cost of energy bills that is reduced but also the amount of tax payable under the CRC scheme – a double saving for members to enjoy.

Barnsley MPs engage with local businesses

The Chamber once again held its annual Barnsley MP’s Breakfast Meeting to discuss key business issues. The event, jointly hosted by the Chamber and the Royal Bank of Scotland, was held in Barnsley, with over 40 businessmen and women joined John Healey MP and Dan Jarvis MP. Some of the topics discussed were the shale gas reserves in the region, support for the early years sector and troublesome regulation. Regulation remains one of the priority areas for the Chamber to lobby our local authorities on and working with the British Chambers of Commerce to ensure that the voices of small and medium sized businesses are relayed to government ministers nationally. There was also a wider debate about the impact the European Union has on national legislation in relation to regulation and also funding to support and regenerate areas in South Yorkshire. Peter Sorsby of Royal Bank of Scotland, who chaired the meeting, said: “The Chamber continues to take a proactive approach to understanding and profiling the challenges that business currently face; with RBS taking an equally proactive approach in its commitment to supporting business. I was delighted to be able to participate in what proved a very informative debate. “A key point to take away was with reference to the power of the collective voice of businesses locally in profiling challenges, needs and the importance of presenting this in a clear and tangible manner - the Chamber is ideally placed to achieve this through such events and its ongoing communication with business and government, both local and national.”

Representation Council – Nominations sought The Chamber has a strong and established track record of ensuring that the involvement and key contributions of member companies are embraced by the Chamber, at all levels of its governance. The Chamber has a pro-active and vibrant Representation Council whose role it is to ensure the views and interests of the members are voiced. We meet between 6 – 8 times a year alternating between venues

in Barnsley and Rotherham. Meetings give members a genuine opportunity to receive updates on the Chamber’s activities. The Council is key to the strategic positioning of the Chamber and is a major influence of our policy and lobbying activity. The 50 members of Council act and speak on behalf of the overall membership and each year will nominate candidates to go forward to become non-executive directors

and members of the Chamber’s Board. We are currently looking for nominations to the Council and would like to invite all businessmen and women who are members of the Chamber to get more involved. Transport group supports Tram Train Your transport working group meets regularly to receive representations from our transport and business partners, both locally, regionally and nationally. Clive Watkinson - Chair of the Transport Working Group, gives us an overview of the Tram Train project in Sheffield and Rotherham.

We asked for your views on the pilot scheme and this is what you said... Tony Belshaw – South Yorkshire Passenger Transport

One of the major local projects that we’ve been monitoring closely over the past couple of years is the innovative £60m tram/train pilot linking Rotherham and Sheffield.

This is great news for South Yorkshire. The county will be the first in the UK to pioneer this technology, which allows for a vehicle to move from light to heavy rail and back again. This integrates the two networks, allowing for transport connections which weren’t previously possible, and at minimal cost (in rail terms).

When the service starts in early 2016, this will be the first network in the country to run vehicles on both tram and railway tracks.

Ben Hawley – GoZapi

Although looking very like Sheffield’s current supertram, a new specialist vehicle is required to meet the much tougher regulations on the main railway network. These vehicles will also be future proofed with dual voltage technology enabling them to run on electrified mainlines should this be installed at a later date. New platforms will be built at Meadowhall South and Rotherham Parkgate whilst the platform at Rotherham Central will be extended. The tram/train vehicle will move from the current supertram track to the main railway network at Meadowhall with the existing rail line from Meadowhall to Parkgate via Rotherham Central being electrified. It should be stressed that this is a two year pilot project being funded by central government to trial the tram/train concept, and we are of course fully supportive of the decision to pilot cutting-edge technology here in South Yorkshire. An additional benefit during the trial period will be three extra vehicles on the current Supertram system which will help with demand and enable a more frequent service. The project will create 35 local jobs and be operated by Stagecoach who operate the current supertram network. Should you have any comments about this or any other local project, or indeed local traffic issues please email Dominic Beck – dominic. beck@brchamber.co.uk and it will be added to the working group’s agenda.

It’s brilliant we’ve got this pilot in South Yorkshire. Any system that improves our public transport system has to be a good thing and gets my vote.

Owen Gleadall – Merlin Software This is a welcome announcement for commuters and businesses in both towns. Fast and easy transportation between hubs has always been a fact ignored in most transport infrastructure, with totally dissimilar transport systems sitting side by side with no obvious connectivity. This ground breaking development should show the way for similar integration into other areas and South Yorkshire is proud to have been chosen to pilot this new system. Effective transport is often the catalyst to investment and I’m sure this will be no different, once the full benefits have been assessed and quantified.

Paul Moorhead – Moorhead Savage Ltd Developing better public transport links in the region is essential. There are signs that car use is starting to decline, with fewer young people buying cars due to the rising costs of fuel and insurance. Increasing capacity on local networks must be a priority. Sounds like £60 million well spent - particularly in view of the obscene £42.6 billion that is earmarked for HS2, which will benefit the relatively few people who travel long distances between the major population centres, whilst doing nothing to improve journeys for the majority of people who use the regional network every day for shorter journeys.

Martyn Benson - RIDO In our next issue we will be discussing Business Crime – have you been the victim of a recent scam that could affect other businesses?

Subject to minimising disruption during the construction project, this has to be good - as consideration needs to be given to the likely impact on traffic levels of the Next superstore and the possible impact of IKEA.

BARNSLEY COLLEGE

More businesses sign the Apprenticeship Pledge Over 20 businesses have now signed Barnsley’s Apprenticeship Pledge, with more signing daily. These businesses have signed to demonstrate their commitment to economic growth, local opportunities and raising the profile of apprenticeships. Launched during Apprenticeship Week 2013, the initiative asks Barnsley businesses to commit to working toward employing 2.5% of their workforce as apprentices by April 2014. Since its launch, the Pledge has attracted support from both public and private sector organisations, large businesses and smaller enterprises. Any business with a Barnsley base is welcome to sign up. Solar Europa Director, David Hawkins, who began his career as an apprentice said “The Apprenticeship scheme is great. We signed the Pledge so we can pass on our skills and expertise to the next generation.” Colin Booth, Barnsley College Principal has been a key driver of the Pledge. Colin said “Collectively the businesses already involved

with the Pledge employ over 250 apprentices. We hope that the Pledge initiative will create over 500 Apprenticeship positions for Barnsley and show businesses the benefits apprentices can bring to their organisations. Every business involved is commended for their commitment to providing local opportunities to people in Barnsley.” Owen Gleadall, Managing Director at Merlin Software, is urging other businesses to get involved as he believes the future lies with young people. “We have had apprentices in the past and we know that if you invest in the right apprentice, the system works. They provide a new lease of life and bring new ideas to the business.” Any organisation, regardless of size or sector, can sign the Pledge. WOMEN IN BUSINESS

Women in business are a group of volunteer Chamber members who meet regulary to develop ideas and opportunities for creative, inspiring and interactive ways for women to network, learn and share with each other.

Elizabeth Hudson, Women in Business Working Group Member discusses mentoring young people. Young people often get negative press, with some sections of the media only too ready to focus on the negative. Yet my personal experience of young people in Barnsley recently has left me in a decidedly optimistic mood about the town’s future. I had the pleasure of being a mentor for this year’s I Know I Can competition. For those of you who haven’t come across this annual fixture in the Barnsley business calendar, IKIC (as it’s affectionately known) is a competition to find the best young entrepreneurial talent. Participants are given £25 investment from their mentors and then have to use their business acumen to turn the £25 into lots more – in some cases thousands! I mentored Eve Lodge, a Year 10 student from Horizon Community College who singlehandedly built a successful business designing, producing and selling customised

bunting. Barmy Bunting proved such a hit that orders came in from as far afield as the US thanks to Facebook – clear proof that exporting is something available to all businesses, regardless of size or experience. Eve was a true inspiration to meet and work with, and I was privileged to be invited to share in her success at the IKIC awards dinner. Eve went on to bag three awards on the night, which celebrated and demonstrated exactly how much creativity, drive and determination Barnsley’s young people possess. As a member of the Chamber’s Women in Business working group, encouraging girls to have confidence in what they can offer the business world is something we focus on so it was superb to see so many girls winning awards for their efforts. I’m hopeful that more and more girls will look at entrepreneurship as a real career option as a result of IKIC.
