Chamber View Chief Executive, Andrew Denniff brings you right up to date with the Chamber and its plans, hopes and expectations for the next few months.

As I mentioned in the first publication of the New Year we were looking forward with great anticipation to 2015 and I am pleased to say that this was enhanced with the acquisition of three new patrons in January (details of which appear later). 2015 is however an election year and as we head towards May, the focus will be clearly around what government we will have and indeed how the rise of the fringe parties will affect the outcome. The final Budget of the current government this month may well have an influence on some of the key marginal seats and as always we will endeavour to both interpret and respond on behalf of our members. Don’t miss out on the respective Budget Breakfast sessions in Barnsley and Rotherham on Friday, 20th March. The other major event in May will be our annual President’s Charity Ball, which this year I am delighted to say will be at the Elsecar Heritage Centre with a theme based around Saturday Night at the Movies. This is a new and exciting venue for the Chamber and I am sure that it will live up to our expectations with a tremendous evening’s entertainment for everyone.

Away from our events programme the Chamber continues to engage widely and as a consequence of the events in Rotherham recently we will continue to focus, with our partners, on how we can not only deal with some of the major challenges facing the borough, but also contribute towards a broad and positive agenda going forward. All in all, there continue to be many challenges, not only facing business but also impacting on the wider community we all live and work in. The Chamber will continue to influence where it can but also represent the best interests of our members wherever possible.

CHAMBER NEWS

New Patrons kick off great start to the New Year The Chamber had a bumper start to the New Year by welcoming three new Patrons in January. Andrew explains what this means for the Chamber and of course who they are. “My comments in the first 2015 edition of our ‘Bulletin’ magazine, focussed on the degree of expectation that our staff were looking forward to the opportunities and challenges that lay ahead for the Chamber over the next 12 months. It was above my hopes that we would be signing up three new patrons during the first fortnight, but that is exactly what has happened. Since becoming chief executive I have tried for some time to bring a bank on board as a patron and so I was delighted that after some lengthy discussions that HSBC have agreed to work with us over the next year, to provide their resource across the region in enhancing what we hope will be a long term relationship. On the subject of longevity, it was also a welcome back as a patron to a long standing friend of this Chamber, Gibson Booth Business Solutions & Insolvency with a renewed package. The Barnsley based organisation is well established in both South and West Yorkshire and will provide a real opportunity for both parties to work closely together.

Finally, our third new patron is the outcome of some innovative developments around start-up business support across the whole of the city region. The Wosskow Brown Foundation, with offices in Sheffield and Barnsley will initially aim to to assist 100 businesses, charities or social enterprises and individuals involved in grassroots sports, through a formal programme and additional support as they need it over the next five years. The scheme will be about supporting people on their journey and helping them to achieve their ambitions through taking lots of small steps. Our Chamber will become directly involved in the work of the Foundation, which is also meeting a call from both government and business leaders for the private sector to do more to help growth within the local economy, create new jobs and raise aspirations. The Chamber has now increased its wider patronage programme to 15 companies and organisations operating locally, with an opportunity to not only work much closer with key partners but to also raise profile right across our region.”

Let’s not sugar coat it – obesity is a BIG issue In England, one in four adults are now obese, and by 2050, it will be one in two (Public Health England). But the problem could be reversed within five years if 30% of sugar was cut from the average diet (The Telegraph).

Sugar can affect productivity in the workplace – most workers feel their energy levels dip in the afternoon, with 68 per cent unable to get through the day without a sugar boost (Daily Mail). Lack of exercise, caused in part by an over reliance on technology and an increasing tendency towards more office based, sedentary jobs, is also contributing towards the obesity epidemic. Barnsley College appeals to local MP for student transport support Angela Smith MP visited Barnsley College to meet with students and hear first-hand how they are affected by the lack of funding for transport. This was part of a national lobbying day on student transport organised by the Association of Colleges (AoC). Currently school children benefit from free travel to school but no universal system exists to support the travel needs of 16-18 year olds, despite the fact that everyone is now required to participate in education and training until their eighteenth birthday. In many parts of England young people aged 16 to 18 can face daily journeys by public transport if they choose a technical, professional or vocational career route. The Association of Colleges is calling for the Government to update the transport rules to ensure local authorities undertake a full assessment of the travel needs of 16 to 18-year-olds to ensure they can choose the courses which best enable them to achieve their potential. They also want transport rights for 16 to 18-year-olds to mirror those which apply to school children so that all young people can choose courses which best enable them to achieve their potential. Angela Smith, MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, said: “I listened to the students’

accounts of the financial difficulties they sometimes face when travelling to and from college. This is an issue that needs close examination. Young people deserve to be able to attend college and gain the skills which will enable them to enjoy a bright future and realise their potential. It is important that transport does not prove to be a stumbling block which prevents them from doing so.”

P L AT I N U M

Colin Booth OBE, Principal at Barnsley College, added: “Transport is a major factor for young people in accessing education or training in Barnsley and the surrounding area. In Further Education or sixth form colleges students often have to travel further than those that study at school because of the specialist provision that colleges offer.”

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

HS2 - The Uncertainty Goes On... The ongoing debate around the siting of the proposed High Speed Rail (HS2) station in South Yorkshire carries on, with no real clear decision expected anytime soon and certainly not this side of the election. Sheffield City Council along with a number of high profile, vociferous businesses within the city continue to push for the ‘Victoria Station’ option in the heart of Sheffield. Whereas the rest of the region is clearly supportive of the originally proposed plan for a South Yorkshire station at Meadowhall - also in Sheffield ! Sir David Higgins (chairman of HS2 Ltd) continues to push for a degree of unanimity

across the region, but recent meetings merely underline the difference of opinion between the city of Sheffield and the rest. Andrew Denniff commenting on the latest position said, “This Chamber of Commerce continues to articulate firmly in all these discussions our long held view that the current proposals to locate the station at Meadowhall remains the best option”.

Budget 2015

As stated within HS2’s own consultation document; ‘the site is already well served by strong and established tram and bus links, as well as a wider rail network across the region’. Indeed the central thread of the whole debate is the argument around supporting the wider region and the associated economic benefit to the whole Sheffield City Region.

The 2015 Budget Statement will be eagerly anticipated by many as we countdown to the General Election in May, no more so than British companies who will be hopeful of a budget for business and not just a shallow budget for votes. Businesses and Chambers of Commerce have nationally lobbied for some key underpinning growth announcements around key transport, access to finance and export support. Businesses do not expect more than their fair share of support and investment from Government in the melting pot that is public finance priorities. Investments around these three key areas of support can act as an enabler rather than a reason for business to enter new markets through more export led international trade support, finance the next big project through more favourable access to finance initiatives or reach out to the highest skilled through better connected transport infrastructure. These are some of the key areas that businesses in our region will be looking to hear the Chancellor of the Exchequer talk about on March 18th, including

12

Bulletin

continued commitments to reduce burdensome regulations and sustainable incentives for employing people. Whilst the Budget will undoubtedly be a Budget that will lay a marker down for the General Election, it must also be a Budget that recognises the need for supporting UK PLC. The Chamber will be hosting a Budget Breakfast Event in partnership with Allotts Accountants and the Royal Bank of Scotland to give members and partners an opportunity to digest the main highlights of the Chancellor’s Budget Statement. The key elements of the budget will be presented by expert analysis at this event and will ensure that the implications of the announcements, particularly for businesses, are explained. The breakfast event will be held at the Holiday Inn, Rotherham, S60 4NA between 8-10am on Friday, 20th March 2015.

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

Retail Overview In the past 25 years town centres and high streets across the country have undergone a period of decline and renewal. Whilst renewal has not universally been felt and then to various degrees where it has, it is has been delivered through a new approach to town centre regeneration which we can see evidence of right here in Barnsley and Rotherham. Barnsley is undergoing a generational transformation through the delivery of their town centre master plan which includes the development of a state of the art markets complex along with significant public realm improvements. In Rotherham, the town has rebranded itself to offer a diversity of independent shops, complimented by the footfall pullers of the national household names. These contrasting models show that by having a clear vision of how you want to appeal, you can still compete and attract people into the town centre for a shopping and leisure experience. Upon the backdrop of increasing competition within retail, particularly for town centre retailers competing against the abundance of out of town retail parks, there are still very unhelpful and sometimes burdensome barriers to trade. Parking has long been a gripe of retailers in town centres who believe that to significantly boost trade and footfall, free parking should be offered all year round. This is something that renowned retail guru Mary Portas has raised with Government to incentivise local Councils to offer free parking. Clearly with the strain on resources local Councils are currently experiencing, offering free parking has become increasingly difficult to justify and there doesn’t appear to be any light at the end of the tunnel for town centre based traders. Another common issue is that of burdensome business rates. The British Chambers of Commerce has lobbied national Government on carrying out a review of business rates and looking to find a fairer way of charging this tax. Can it be fair

that a town centre retailer working long hours to run their business must pay business rates of thousands of pounds a year and online alternatives are not required to pay a penny? If we are to reenergise and support town centres across the country to become thriving centres again, this needs wholesale reform and not merely be treated with sticking plasters that are the customary short-term additional business rate relief offerings. Town and city centres have come a long way in rejuvenating themselves and remaining

relevant in today’s multi-outlet retail industry. Notwithstanding major issues such as parking, insurance and business rates that need addressing nationally, there are many positives that can be drawn from Barnsley and Rotherham who are working hard to do things differently and attract shoppers to the centre. We are certain that there is still a very important role for town centres as beating hearts of our local economies and in many cases our wider community.

The 44 acre site on Todwick Road will benefit from EZ status meaning that it can offer significant tax benefits to occupiers. New National College of Advanced Manufacturing in Rotherham A new national advanced manufacturing college is set to be based on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham. The college is set to be joint headquartered at a site in Coventry and at the AMRC Training Centre and aims to identify the needs of industry and develop training provision to meet those needs.

David Newton, managing director of St Paul’s Developments, said: “With supply of stock in severely short supply across South Yorkshire, and a limited number of available sites able to accommodate occupiers seeking units in excess of 300,000 sq ft, 31 East is coming to the market at the best possible time.”

AESSEAL invests in Rotherham Award-winning Rotherham manufacturer, AESSEAL is well underway with an £8.7m project to expand the company’s UK R&D and manufacturing capability.

The first full annual cohort of 250 advanced apprentices employed by high value manufacturing companies has been achieved and the centre, which has gained National College Status, has plans to grow the number of apprentices and expand into new areas. These will include process control engineering, polymers, automation and robotics for food manufacturing and electronics and instrument control, which supports the strategic partnership with the new HS2 railway engineering college being set up in Doncaster.

To date, £1.44m from the Government’s Regional Growth Fund (RGF) has been matched by an investment of £3.3m and secured 56 jobs as a result, with similar numbers of jobs expected to have been generated in the company’s supply chain. Land adjoining the Templeborough site has already been acquired and could lead to the world’s fourth largest mechanical seal business doubling its current 330-strong Rotherham workforce over time.

RETAIL FEATURE

The Future of Retail Ann Cadman, Vice Chair of the Sheffield City Region Retail Forum and Managing Director of The Source Skills Academy discusses the future of retail. “It is impossible to predict what will happen in the future with so many factors affecting the ever-changing retail market; however, if we have a clear vision in mind and make every interaction with our customers matter today, we have a pretty good chance of succeeding tomorrow. People often ask about the future of shopping in-store and wonder whether everyone will, one day, do all their shopping online. The key to keeping customers in-store is satisfying all the customers’ senses to make their visit a great experience. There has been a great deal of enthusiasm and excitement about the future of retail and cutting-edge retailers are beginning to meet the needs of the customer through innovative ideas for omni-channel shopping, merging shopping in-store and online. For Annoushka Ducas, founder of Links of London, “the store is still the most important first-touch experience. Our customers will come to the store and then discover more online”. H&M recently launched their ‘Scan and Buy’ app enabling customers to scan an item with their smart phone to check if another size or colour is available to purchase online. Technology is also being used to aid the trying on experience.

Dutch lingerie label Lincherie is utilising 3D body scanners to enable customers to be measured for their bra size without the aid of a store assistant. The changing room mirror tells the customer how to position themselves in order to be measured and, in less than a minute and 140 measurements later, it tells the customer their exact bra size and which items the store has in stock in their size. US fashion retailer Neiman Marcus is trialling another kind of mirror; one which captures video footage of the customer trying clothes on, allowing them to view themselves from all angles and also to try the same item in a different colour without getting changed. These images can then be shared via social media to allow the customer to receive opinions on the outfit from friends and family before buying. Ultimately, if retailers give excellent customer service and ensure the customer has a memorable experience, the physical store will continue to exist. Having a team who love what they do and enjoy giving the very best possible service is vital to ensure the customer will return. Unfortunately we don’t have crystal ball but I find one of the great things about retailing is that it can bring out the best in people and those businesses that are able to respond quickly to customer demands, using flexibility and innovation, will do well. “

The Retail Interview This issue of the Bulletin looks at our regions retail and we spoke to two of our 2014 award winners from the Retail sector. Charlotte Scothern, owner of Patchwork Pig in Rotherham won Outstanding Retailer on the year and we discussed high street retailing. We also spoke to Lauren Nicholson of Remember the Date, a unique online retailer of greeting cards and who won Most Promising New Business.

Patchwork Pig

through and can look forward to making the town succeed.

The high street has been a challenging place for retailers over the years, particularly for independents – Are you noticing a change?

Why did you choose the high street and not opt for an online store? I began with a high street store and then opened the online shop, mainly as I prefer a physical location when shopping myself, in my opinion shopping online can’t match the benefits of shopping in store, you get to see, touch, smell the products and you gain a better grasp of the quality of a product.

The high street has been seen as a challenging place for retail with the increase of out of town shopping areas and online, but now more and more customers are recognising the benefits their high street can provide. Town centres are filled with unique independent businesses and Rotherham Town Centre is a great example of this, high streets provide an unusual mix, giving you products you can’t find elsewhere and great customer service. Projects such as the Mary Portas Pilot, Small Business Saturday and Shop Local, have encouraged people back to the High Streets and support local business.

Rotherham Town Centre has had a really tough time and spent a lot of time in the press nationally, has this had a negative impact on the town or has it given retailers such as you more drive to succeed?

18

Rotherham is filled with retailers who are passionate about our town and want to support its regeneration. Times have been difficult, but the close knit community of businesses have come together to support each other. The town has gone from strength to strength with the regeneration work that has been completed, as a more projects move towards completion and new plans take shape, it is still an exciting time for the town centre and hopefully we have now made it

It also allowed me to grow my business through interaction with customers, gaining their feedback and which helped me to decide which product ranges to expand and what new products to introduce. We do find many customers visit online, firstly to narrow down choices or see we have something they may be interested in, but then purchase in store, but this also works with social media, we have many customers who visit the store after we have posted images of new products on Facebook and Twitter.

Remember the Date

What advice would you offer to someone looking to start his or her own retail business?

You’re celebrating your first year in business – it was brave moving into such a competitive market, how has your first year gone?

Lauren: Probably to put a team in place from the start. That has been one of the things I wish I had known at the start as having a co-founder enables you to bounce ideas off and share the rough times. My second piece of advice is to read the Lean Start-up by Eric Ries. It’s all about how to build a product people want and in most cases means going out and asking the right questions to potential customers before you build your product and start selling but most of all to just go out and do it.

It’s gone really well. After launching down at the ExCel Centre in London we’ve gone on to have a really promising year. We were a finalist in the University of Sheffield Enterprise Awards back in September and then won the Most Promising Business Award at last October’s Business Awards which was a fantastic experience and definitely opened up many doors as well as making more people aware of Remember the Date. I think working in such a competitive market is a great thing as it means you have to be on your toes and thinking about ways to stay ahead of your competition and also looking at what other markets are doing to see if various practises can be utilised in your own. Some people may think it was brave moving into such a competitive market but for me it just proved that it’s a business that works and is profitable.

Do you feel running your business online gives you an advantage over traditional ‘bricks and mortar’ stores? I think there are advantages and disadvantages to both. With a “bricks and mortar” store you have people walking past on a daily basis and that presence from the very beginning so potential customers know who you are and how to find you but the

downside is you pay for this presence with higher outgoings than most online stores. The internet is a really great way to launch a business as you can instantly be connected to millions of people who want to buy your product with lower set-up costs but customers tend to only stay on sites a couple of seconds before moving onto the next search results so it’s important to grab their attention at the very start. Another downside to being an online store is that the internet offer so much choice but I see that as a positive as it makes us strive to be a better company than our competitors. For Remember the Date, the personalisation of cards and the uploading of videos really means that at the moment, online is the best platform for our business.

You’ve seen great growth in your first year that you didn’t expect – what’s next for Remember the Date? We’re planning to grow and build up a team to take the business to the next stage of development. I’m keen to make Remember the Date the first multimedia greetings card business so want to develop the video greetings card software further and implement technology that recently been seen in apps such as SnapChat to create a more personalised experience between sender and recipient. We’ll also look into developing the video technology further and start to stock the cards in more stores enabling customers to upload videos right then and there rather than ordering through the website.

20

Charlotte: Grab every opportunity and love what you sell. Whether it’s questioning whether anyone actually reads the tweets you send or if you’ll actually meet anyone at the networking event or if an event will be worth working at, go for it! If you don’t try you’ll never know, and sometimes the best opportunities come when you least expect them. Carry on and keep discovering new ways to promote yourself. I also think it’s important to remind yourself why you’re different, why people should buy from you or buy your product and why you do your job, when you remind yourself I find it gives me renewed motivation and makes it easier to present myself to others. And love what you sell, because when you love a product, customers can tell and they’ll love them too.

MB Products sews seeds for the future with LEP investment A grant from the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has helped sewing and light fabrication specialist MB Products expand its business and production by moving to a larger factory site, creating five new jobs. The business has been awarded a grant from the LEP’s Business Growth Programme, which is supported by the government’s Regional Growth Fund. The £50,000 grant has enabled the company to purchase a bigger factory in Barnsley, a vital move to help the business to continue to grow. And thanks to the LEP investment, MB Products is looking to target a much wider range of market sectors than it had previously been able to. Roger Marsh, Chair of the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership, said: “MB Products is a specialist manufacturer and as such requires advanced facilities to allow it to fulfil its potential. We are therefore delighted to have been able to assist the company to move to larger premises, retaining a growing business in one of our key sectors and

resulting in new employment opportunities for people living in the Leeds City Region. “I am pleased to hear that as a result of the new investment, MB Products is now able to take forward work it initially had to turn down due to capacity issues, and now the business is able to continue its goal of increasing the unique services it provides.” The business currently works in sectors ranging from healthcare to the military, supplying products that have been designed and manufactured in close collaboration with the end user. MB Product’s previous factory was unable to cope with the company’s growing work-load demand and the grant, part of a £500,000 investment, has allowed the business to move sites to a larger factory, employ five new members of staff and develop bespoke

working systems to enhance its expansion. Roger Godfrey, managing director at MB Products, said: “Our move has enabled the flow of work on the shop floor to become much more efficient. In our previous factory work was stretched across three floors now it is all on one. “This time saving improvement has helped our company to meet the ever increasing demand we are seeing from our expanding customer base. “The application process for the Business Growth Programme was simple and straightforward. Advice from both the LEP and business support programme Enterprising Barnsley was invaluable as we pursued our application and both organisations provided vital guidance which eventually led to the grant being successfully received.“

Local archiving business invests in Solar Archiving and confidential waste disposer, Chandlers Archives reduces its carbon footprint and brings down rising electricity costs by installing solar panels to its unit in Thurcroft. To advance the company’s efforts to improve its environmental performance and reduce carbon emissions company owner, Bill Chandler invested £30,000 in solar panels. Following an on-site technical survey, data was prepared using the Carbon Trust assessment model, reassuring Chandlers that the initial estimates of the amount of renewable electricity generated by the solar panels was accurate and would provide a return on investment of between 6 to 8 years. Chandlers consumes approximately 7,665kWh of energy a year and they are

likely to produce 17,000kWh of energy from the PV system. Through this technology, Chandlers are reducing the energy they are burning from the grid and will have a surplus of electricity - producing more than they are consuming, making the investment cash-positive. The excess will go back to the electricity network, making the office, in terms of electricity, carbon neutral. Established for over 10 years, Chandlers Archives, archive confidential documents locally to South Yorkshire and surrounding areas. Chandlers offers collection and retrieval of documents, shredding and

disposal of confidential documentation. Bill said “We wanted to reduce the company’s carbon footprint and bring down rising electricity costs so turned to Westinghouse Solar Ltd, a carbon Trust accredited installer of Solar PV. Due to high electricity costs and the company’s carbon footprint reduction plan, Solar PV proved to be a great option as not only are we able to reduce electricity bills but with the government backed Feed-in-Tariff, we are able to produce a significant income whilst helping the business fulfil its carbon footprint reducing targets.”

Internet marketing firm undergoes giant expansion Online marketing agency ‘Bigfoot Digital’ has taken giant steps during 2014, with its workforce and turnover more than doubling in size. expecting the business to at least double in size again in the next year.

The company, founded in 2009 by Mark Woodcock and Lindsey Watson, started the year with six employees and ended it with 15. It has even bigger ambitions for 2015. It is expecting staff numbers to more than double again and will create a number of work experience positions and apprenticeships to help young people get jobs in the digital sector. Bigfoot Digital offers search engine optimisation (SEO) and social media marketing services to help a wide range of business clients maximise their online presence and actively engage with customers through the internet. During 2014 the firm recruited a video production expert, an outreach specialist and a content strategist, and expanded its social media team and SEO team to the extent

that it now has a dedicated section for online technical SEO support. Estimated turnover for 2014 was just over £400,000, with profits doubling from around £40,000 to £80,000. Mark Woodcock said: “Bigfoot Digital has already made huge strides and has got even bigger ambitions for 2015. We are fully

“We also envisage creating a large number of work experience placements in the next 12 months. Our vision is to have a bank of desks with students coming in and gaining valuable, paid, work experience. The aim is to help the sector out and give young people the chance to gain the work experience that is so valuable when looking for jobs. At the same time it gives us the opportunity to identify talent and tap into this when we are looking to recruit. “Our other big plan is to launch a competition called ‘The Marketing Apprentice’ for which we will encourage young people to enter a creative piece of work via a dedicated website. The winner will be awarded an apprenticeship with our company.”

Launch of Rotherham’s first electric vehicle charging point The first ‘on-street’ fast charging point has been installed at Rotherham’s Drummond Street, which will allow drivers to top up their electric vehicle battery charge on the road in just three to four hours. The rollout of public access charge points across the county forms part of a Government initiative to encourage South Yorkshire businesses to make the switch to Plug-in Electric Vehicles. The unique scheme offers eligible businesses Government subsidised electric vehicles and chargers. Businesses can benefit from a grant of up to £10,500 for the flexible lease of a Plug-in van or £7,500 for a Plug-in car for up to 48 months, plus an additional grant of £500 towards the cost of installing a workplace charging point. Rotherham Borough Council’s Transportation

With new models coming to the market and very low running costs these vehicles are an increasingly attractive option for many drivers.” Companies making the switch to electric vehicles can also benefit from low running costs of approximately £2 for 80 miles, no road tax and a reduction in exhaust emissions to help create healthier and cleaner roads in our region.

SSE Procurement Opportunities SSE currently spend £200 million per year in the North of England and Open4Business has been introduced to highlight SSE’s commitment to promote local procurement and source goods, works and services from small to medium enterprises. The aim of the Open4Business portal creates a FREE platform for SSE and its key contractors to post contract opportunities and increase visibility of its procurement process. Local businesses will be able to view and bid for opportunities in one simple process and even register to receive alerts if suitable contracts are posted. Open4Business Trans-Pennine was inspired following the success of the Highland portal that has now been running for 2 years in the North of Scotland. Along the M62 corridor, SSE have a significant generation foot print through a variety of assets including Fiddler’s Ferry Power Station, Ferrybridge Power Station, Keadby Wind Farm and our most recent asset which is still under construction, is the Ferrybridge Multifuel 1 (FM1) project.

“SSE want to maximise local benefits in the areas we operate in and Open4Business is the key to success in doing this”

Although engagement is still at an early stage, over 500 organisations have registered on the portal and more than £42 million of contracts have been awarded. This has been made possible with the help of local authorities such as St Helens, Warrington & Co, Wakefield Council, BDR (Barnsley, Doncaster & Rotherham) and RiDO (Rotherham). The portal is also being implemented by our alliance partners on site and Ferrybridge and Fiddlers Ferry Power Stations, namely Hertel, Costain, PJD, Shanks and Cape. SSE want to maximise local benefits in the areas we operate in and Open4Business is the key to success in doing this, the growth in value and volume of works being posted and awarded on the portal is very positive and we are working hard to ensure this continues and increases.
