CHAMBER VIEW
Chamber View Chief Executive, Andrew Denniff details the changes to The Bulletin and gives an overview since the EU Referendum.
This edition of our Bulletin publication is the first in our new on-line format, following a decision to change from our traditional printed version. This was not made lightly and followed widespread consultation, the response to our membership survey and on simple commercial grounds. It is a change we are comfortable to make and indeed look forward to your positive (and I hope constructive) feedback. The Bulletin will now be available to read both via our website and app going forward. The Communications team will be sending a link to each edition via email so please look out for it. In the future we will also be looking to further develop The Bulletin offering and via the new method of communicating we can reach a much wider audience. Now we all know the outcome of the EU Referendum and I sincerely hope that the decision the country has made is one that will provide the best way forward for us all and especially is a result that provides the biggest opportunities
for businesses throughout the UK.
growth and sustainable employment.
With the EU debate put to bed (at least for the time being), I was hoping to focus on the real challenges ahead for our region. The next voting in which we will all be involved was I thought to elect a mayor for the Sheffield City Region. [Although at the time of writing both leading parties are in ‘turmoil’, the prime minister has announced his resignation and there may be a potential General Election to deal with].
Finally, you will see from pages ahead that we have now launched the 2016 Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards. Following two very successful years in Barnsley, this year we return to Magna and for the first time open entries to any business with an ‘S’ postcode. As you will see, there is a category for every business and I would encourage you to have a look and submit an entry.
This new post is an integral part of the Devolution Deal and a key role in guiding and supporting the growth agenda of the Local Enterprise Partnership. Whilst undoubtedly the new mayor will be a political appointment, it is essential that they and their new team work closely and constructively with the business community. It will only be the private sector that can and will create economic C H A M B E R

Chamber Staff take on ParkY Run in aid of Yorkshire Cancer Research
Sunday 19th June saw the running of the inaugural ParkY run at Cannon Hall Farm, Barnsley. ParkY run is an event organised by Yorkshire Cancer Research to raise monies for this fantastic Charity. This included a junior 2K dash for children aged 2 and over, and a 5K fun run, both officially started by Yorkshire Cancer Research’s new patron Sir Michael Parkinson. Our Membership Executives here at the Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber trained for a number of weeks to take part in the 5K fun run. Whilst supported by Shane on the run, Carrie has a particular affinity with raising money for this cause: Carrie’s brother Adrian Sudbury passed away from leukaemia at the age of 27, in August 2008. Adrian was a reporter for the Huddersfield Examiner and blogged extensively about his experience after being diagnosed. He led a campaign for more education about bone marrow donation, taking a petition of 11,000 signatures to Downing Street and inspiring Prime Minister Gordon Brown to write to celebrities to raise awareness of the campaign. Carrie said: “My brother’s incredible story attracted a lot of publicity. I know first-hand
how devastating cancer can be, be it a blood cancer or tissue cancer, so I’m delighted to be able to support Yorkshire Cancer Research and the important work they fund in our region.” Shane commented “Carrie and myself decided to sign up for the Yorkshire Cancer Research Parky Run as it is a great cause and almost everyone has had someone in their lives who’ve been affected by cancer. Yorkshire Cancer Research is a fantastic charity and helps bring our region together through events they host and the work they do to raise awareness. Thank you to everyone who sponsored us”.
Community Fundraising Manager at Yorkshire Cancer Research, said: “We’re really grateful to Carrie, Shane and everyone at Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce who supported Parky Run and helped to raise so much money. Carrie only started running recently, along with Shane who’s recently undergone a knee operation, so completing 5K is an amazing achievement and we hope this is the first of many races! The money raised will help more people in Yorkshire avoid, survive and cope with cancer.” All in all the Carrie and Shane raised in excess of £400 for this great cause.
Carrie added “Whilst the run was tougher than expected, it was very enjoyable and we raised a lot of money for a great cause”.
Thank you to all who made a donation and congratulations to Carrie and Shane from everyone at the Chamber.

Apprentices show Rotherham’s future is in safe hands MYTH-BUSTING mechanical engineer Philip Holley restored his boss’s faith in apprenticeships Philip, who took the Rotherham Apprentice of the Year Awards (intermediate) title alongside Alex Bellis (higher level), chose to reject college or university in favour of workbased experience. His boss at Barbot Hall-based ZND UK Ltd, Paul Stevenson, said: “Philip has restored my faith and belief that an apprenticeship programme is a worthwhile exercise for any business.” Philip, a maintenance engineer with temporary fencing and pedestrian barrier manufacturer ZND, said: “I didn’t really want to go to university and decided to take an apprentice role and get a bit of experience in what engineering was about and I don’t regret that all.
“Thanks to my apprenticeship I have secured a job that I love which means I work as hard as I can daily. To be recognised in this way doing something I am so passionate about is almost surreal. I appreciate all of the feedback the judging panel and event organisers gave me on the day, and I feel even more confident going about my role. “I hope to use this opportunity to promote the benefits available from taking an apprenticeship to learn work and life skills as well as a fantastic career if you apply yourself effectively.” The Advertiser decided to stage the awards in partnership with the Business Growth Board after initial discussions with Ian Goodall, of Aardvark Swift.
Ian said: “I am proud to say that the awards were my idea. The aim is to bust the myth that apprenticeships are for people not intelligent enough to go to university. “We have succeeded in doing that today and next year we will aim to have even more entries.” Article and photograph supplied by: The Rotherham Advertiser Pictured from left to right: Alex Bellis ( Expert Web), Eve Keenan (Deputy Mayor), Pat Keenan ( Consort) & Ian Goodall ( Aardvark Swift)
“There is a stereotype about apprentices being kids who can’t get to university but that’s not the case.” Alex’s nominator at web design and digital marketing agency Expert Web in Bramley, Chris Harpin, said: “I don’t think Expert Web would have proceeded had it not been for the role Alex played during the early days.” And project manager Alex added: “I was delighted to have been selected as a finalist and knew that I was up against three great candidates, so when I was announced as the winner it came as a complete shock. Monday was a fantastic experience and a defining moment in my career that I will never forget.

Are you worried about an ageing loved one? One of our patrons, Sheffield based Westfield Health, have invested in a new product innovation, the 3rings plug, which offers a simple proposition: If you worry about an ageing loved one, but can’t always be there, the 3rings plug could help. Simply by plugging an appliance a loved one uses regularly, like the kettle or TV, into their 3rings plug, up to 10 family members or friends get reassuring messages, straight to their mobile phone letting them know that everything is OK. And, if no activity is detected, they’ll receive an alert, enabling someone to check on their loved one that all is well.
It’s very easy to use and install, simply plug it in and connect. And, it’s none intrusive too. In short, the 3rings plug delivers a simple and affordable solution, offering a great deal of peace of mind to those worrying every day about their ageing loved one, whilst at the same time respecting their privacy and
helping them to stay independent and in their own home for as long as possible. For more information about the 3rings plug: 0114 250 2000 or westfieldhealth.com/3rings

Designed in Rotherham
It is well recognised that ‘Made in Sheffield’ is synonymous with high quality manufacture, but for every product made, that product has had to be designed. Design is everywhere, it impacts all of us all of the time and Rotherham is rich in design capability and all those businesses associated in getting things made, prototyped and tested before they are handed over for manufacture. This is best exemplified by all the design activity that takes place at the Innovation Technology Centre located on the AMP on the outskirts of Rotherham at Catcliffe. In this building design activity ranges from how to super cool computers through to the 3D printing of silicone. Companies such as Eden Consulting Engineering who design and build specialist engineering rigs that are used across the world; companies such as Performance Engineered Solutions who are reverse engineering classic products and components ensuring the knowledge and legacy of historic engineering is never lost. Now the reputation that Sheffield has earned for its manufacturing has taken many years, indeed arguably over three centuries, so Rotherham’s design sector has some catching up to do

and a status to develop. But, the value of Rotherham as a hot bed of design goes beyond the design consultants themselves. Fripp Design + Research are a well-established and recognised product design consultancy that trades globally from their design studio on the AMP. Although Fripp are excellent at what they do, there are many other design companies that can make similar claims. Where they gain a competitive edge is through the design supply chain. Within 5 miles of their studio, 95 per cent of their entire supply chain are located companies such as AME Prototyping at Dinnington, who supply Fripp with prototyping services. Similarly IIdea Ltd are co-located on the AMP and supply specialist component manufacture. Other companies in the supply chain supply fabrication and electronic design services. This

client with timely and cost effective solutions to their design needs and allows Fripp to build long-term relationships and knowledge of their supplier’s capacity, knowledge and capabilities. However, the Innovation Technology Centre is not alone. Located across the entire borough of Rotherham are centres where new and early stage businesses are involved in designing new software products, new types of materials for use in additive and advanced manufacturing and service design. This wealth of design capability is why companies such as Boeing, Siemens and Rolls Royce choose to come to Rotherham. If you want something designing, then the cry is get it ‘Designed in Rotherham’.

Developed in Barnsley Laser expert Cutting Technologies (CutTec) is challenging perceptions and pushing boundaries when it comes to laser cutting and engraving, whilst working on projects that have been to space with Major Tim Peake. The company has been confident enough to break out of its traditional manufacturing mould and, following successful diversification, is now working alongside the world’s most accomplished designers, brands, architects and artists. During the recession, Cut Tec spotted a gap in the market and decided to invest heavily in new machinery and developing the skills of its staff. Now, having successfully evolved, the Barnsley-based manufacturer laser cuts and engraves a diverse range of materials from wood to copper, and
almost everything in between. Projects have varied from laser cutting latex for Paris Couture Week, laser cutting corten for the Conrad Shawcross’ showcase at the Royal Academy of Arts’ Summer Exhibition to laser engraving an Astro-Pi, currently on board the International Space Station as part of Tim Peake’s mission. Cut Tec is proving first hand, that there’s no limit when it comes to laser cutting and engraving. “It wasn’t simple connecting engineers and art, but we were lucky many of the skills needed already existed in our team,” explained Jane Robinson, director and co-founder of Cutting Technologies.
“We’ve worked hard to maintain the traditional steel and engineering side of our business. However, when the two worlds collide, it can create incredible pieces of art.” Having worked alongside world-renowned designers such as Conrad Shawcross, Sir Anthony Gormley and Moritz Waldemeyer, Cut Tec has become a top class provider to the creative industry. The whole company shares a creative ethos that the only limit is one’s imagination. British manufacturing – starting right here in Barnsley - has never been so bold!

at a time when most economic figures published recently have been disappointing. “But there is no room for any complacency. Manufacturing output is still below its pre-recession level, and longer-term trends show that the sector is struggling. • Manufacturing output in April 2016 was up 2.3% on the month, and was up 0.8% on the year • Total industrial production in April 2016 was up 2.0% on the month, and was up 1.6% on the year Commenting on the UK Index of Production figures for April 2016, published on the 8th June by the ONS, David Kern, BCC Chief Economist, said:
“This is unsurprising given current adverse global economic conditions, but the latest figures show that there are still areas of strength in British manufacturing that must be supported. “A healthy manufacturing base remains critical to the well-being of our economy in key areas such as exports, productivity and innovation.” Source: British Chamber of Commerce

Fire safety can sometimes be a matter of life or death. Is your business prepared for the unexpected? At a time of continued economic challenge, it is more important than ever to ensure your business is in the best possible shape - and that includes preparing for an unexpected, catastrophic event like a fire. Recognition for businesses
In response to this Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce are doing what they do best; lending support to local public services, businesses and organisations which all play an important part in the Sheffield City Region. The Chamber has developed the Business Fire Safety South Yorkshire project to raise fire safety awareness amongst local businesses to reinforce the many positive activities that are happening at South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue’ explains Adrian Platts, Coordinator for the project. It is a free initiative delivered in partnership with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, and funded through the Stronger Safer Communities Reserve by South Yorkshire Fire Authority. Our mantra is “Don’t risk a life or your business” and we mean every word. We support businesses to develop a fire safety culture that is responsive, measured and above all supports employee welfare and business continuity. The project was launched in September 2015 and has to date supported a range of businesses in South Yorkshire with fire safety guidance, tools and support.
How it supports businesses The project engages with businesses of any size and type, and promotes the fire safety message across the area. As part of the toolkit, businesses receive a free fire safety folder with all the relevant templates to manage fire safety. It even comes with a free emergency torch too.
Businesses can get direct support through either a site visit or attending a masterclass to gear up with the knowledge needed to effectively manage fire safety at their premises. All of the information directly supports the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which is a legal requirement for businesses to meet in regards to fire safety at a place of business.
Expanding awareness with the fire safety app As part of the initiative, technology has also been used to engage workplaces by providing a Business Fire Safety app that serves not only the management teams, but front line staff also. The idea behind the concept is to continually maintain staff awareness through a weekly notification system that reminds them of basic fire safety considerations. It’s all about staff being made aware of fire safety more often and alleviates some of the pressure for managers to remember fire safety issues all of the time.
For those businesses that have their fire safety management systems organised and in place already, they can also benefit as part of the project. An accreditation scheme is provided that recognises those businesses who are up to speed with fire safety, and more importantly it is acknowledged by South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue. Providing business meet some straightforward criteria, they can achieve accreditation in a relatively simple process.
Who is eligible? All businesses that pay their rates to either Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham or Sheffield local authorities are eligible for support so if you’d like to find out a bit more about the project, please give us a call or visit our web page. Did we already mention that support is provided for free? We did. And it helps you stay on the right side of the law. The real question is… What has your business got to lose?

Hallam FM’s Cash for Kids charity raises money for both individuals and groups of children who need a little bit of extra support, either due to illness or as a result of growing up in deprived areas. Every bit of cash they receive stays within the South Yorkshire area. Last year over 91,000 children were helped across a multitude of causes. So far since April this year IT Desk have raised £300 for the charity, with their latest activity being ‘Superhero Day’. All the team took part in dressing up as a superhero and giving a minimum donation of £5; along with selling cupcakes, pop and other refreshments, and playing Bingo to raise further funds. In addition to the money raised on the day, the IT Desk directors then matched what was raised in order to double their efforts! Barnsley FC’s mascot, Toby Tyke, attended the event and presented the Cash for Kids team with a signed Barnsley FC shirt, donated by IT Desk to Hallam FM’s charity auction.

Conference growth sees confidence returning to South Yorkshire economy An independently-owned South Yorkshire hotel believes business confidence is returning to the local economy after recording its largest number of conference bookings since before the 2008 financial crisis. Rotherham-based Carlton Park Hotel, situated on Moorgate Road, has seen conference bookings increase by over 20% during the past twelve months and is set to achieve further growth after securing a number of new long term contracts. The hotel’s position close to the town centre and local council offices has seen it benefit from an upswing in local government meetings whilst strong relationships with private sector Rotherham companies have seen it chosen to host a range of events from external training to industrial deafness clinics and drop in centres. After recording significant growth in the numbers of informal business meetings being held in the hotel, Carlton Park has also invested £ 20,000 upgrading its Moorgate and President Suites, including decor, furnishings and audio-visual

Sales manager Jason Gossop believes the growth of Carlton Park’s conference bookings isn’t just a reflection of the growing confidence amongst the South Yorkshire business community, but growing numbers of businesses are placing greater emphasis
“The growth in conferencing reflects the importance placed upon face-toface contact when it comes to building closer working relationships with business associates and colleagues. “Hotels have long been a popular choice when it comes to hosting business events, offering an opportunity for business owners and members of staff to avoid the distractions associated with running a business and concentrating on completing the task at hand. “

Don’t let holiday workforce give you the summertime blues, local business owners warned
Local business owners who take on temporary workers over the next few months are being warned not to let paperwork oversights give them the summertime blues. Nick Brook who runs TaxAssist Accountants in Barnsley said: “Local small businesses will be taking on temporary staff throughout this summer and with seasonal pressure on employers’ summer holiday rotas and work schedules, it could be tempting to pay workers cash in hand to cut costs. “But employers who scrimp on the paperwork run the risk of hefty financial penalties. Generally, you should follow the same procedure for temporary or student
workers as you do for new full, or part-time, workers. “If a P45 is missing, a Starter Checklist formerly the P46 form – must be completed and if the employee’s income is more than £155 a week, employers must account for National Insurance. If they earn more than £917 a month on average, they must also pay income tax. “Employers must also make sure that
employees are paid the minimum wage appropriate for their age and circumstances. Since April 2016, over 25s have been entitled to a minimum of the National Living Wage of £7.20 per hour. “HMRC will hold employers liable for any shortfall in tax or pay, and any short-comings in their records. We’re urging local business owners not to let paperwork oversights give them a costly headache this summer.”

Local Businesses hear last minute EU Debate
With less than a week before the UK goes to the polls the Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce held their EU Referendum Debate, on Friday 17th, in association with Claydon Accountancy, at the Holiday Inn, Barnsley. The debate focussed on opposing arguments that will impact on businesses and the economy of both leaving or remaining in the European Union. At the beginning of the meeting the sad loss of Jo Cox MP was marked by a moment of silence and reflection following the devastating loss of a well respected public servant. The debate was chaired by the Chamber’s President Paul Jagger MBE and included four business representatives, two arguing for both sides of the debate. Arguing to remain in the EU were William Beckett and Julia Gash both Sheffield based business people, and Ged Shields and Clive Watkinson arguing to leave the EU who are both businessmen based in Barnsley.

Andrew Denniff, Chief Executive of the Chamber said, “It is crucial that as part of this debate the views of businesses and business people are heard and that the economic arguments are aired. The Chamber of Commerce is well placed to do this on behalf of our 1200 member companies across the region. “By holding the event we hope attendees
The panellists debated many important business issues, including the impact on interest rates, regional investment, access to skills and significantly on the affect on export and imports. There was a consensus from all the panellists who encouraged the audience to vote according to what their
So Where Do We Fit In Now …. ? Commenting the weekend after the EU Referendum result the Chamber President, Paul Jagger said;
“After the long, frustrating and considered by many negative campaigns on both sides, we now know the outcome. Wherever we were personally, the result at the ballot box is emphatic and, if the scale of the result may be surprising to many, the one certainty is that whatever the motives of individual voters, the way ahead should be clear. “The challenge now for business in Barnsley and Rotherham is to respond and prosper in a very unsure environment. We now have the uncertainty of decoupling from the EU and for the moment no clear idea of the shape of a future government that will negotiate that deal. Let’s just think about the priorities we should press for

“To some of us who voted to Remain, it may have seemed like the end of the world on Friday morning but every change has always in business to be seen not only as a challenge but an opportunity.” “We have a responsibility at the Chamber of Commerce to grasp this on behalf of our members and as we begin to navigate these difficult and uncertain times the Chamber must continue to stand in support of its members and the wider business community”.

HS2 Latest - South Yorkshire Link Could be Scrapped. No doubt many of you are aware of the debate over the location of the HS2 station in South Yorkshire. To clarify, the original and current proposal by HS2 themselves is to locate the station at or near to Meadowhall, however a counter proposal was put forward by Sheffield City Council for a brand new station located in the city centre, on the site of the old Victoria station. The Sheffield city centre option would cost £1.6 Billion (that’s £1,600,000,000!) more than the originally proposed Meadowhall option, involve demolishing a large number of houses and digging extra tunnels. Not only this, but the city centre is already heavily congested with traffic. So what’s the point in adding to this problem? It would also significantly delay the whole project and add longer journey times to and from Leeds. This proposal by Sheffield City Council and
others, to use HS2 money to redevelop their city centre would be bad enough in itself, however it now threatens the whole of the Yorkshire link of HS2, with worrying noises coming from government that the ‘eastern leg’ could be scrapped entirely. This would put the whole of Yorkshire and indeed the rest of the North East, at a huge disadvantage to the Midlands and North West England. So come on Sheffield, we know that you’ve spent a significant amount of local taxpayer’s money on this, but it’s time to call it a day and get behind Meadowhall which is supported by the rest of the city region. The potential alternative is no HS2 at all! To get involved with transport or any of our other working groups please email: dominic.beck@brchamber.co.uk
