South Yorkshire’s Best Honoured Businesses across the region were recognised at the annual Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards, held in Rotherham. This year’s awards saw 14 businesses, charities and individuals honoured at the prestigious awards ceremony, as they battled against a shortlist of 5 in each category. Cannon Hall Farm, located near Barnsley, was crowned the Universal Components Business of the Year, after triumphing over the evenings competition. The ceremony, hosted by BBC Radio Sheffield’s Andy Giddings, was held at Magna with 480 guests in attendance to celebrate the achievements of the shortlisted individuals and organisations, sponsored by RNN Group. The evenings individual awards were presented to Jacob Fox of Berneslai Homes, winner of the Apprentice of

the Year award and Allan Ogle of Hallam FM’s Cash for Kids who picked up the Business Person of the Year award. The Chamber presented a special Lifetime Achievement award to Edward Naylor of Naylor Industries PLC for his hard work and devotion to the local community. Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive, Andrew Denniff said; “As always the evening was superb, reflecting all that is best in our Region. My congratulations go out to all of our winners and especially Cannon Hall Farm, the Business of the Year.

congratulate themselves in contributing to another successful event.” This year also saw the Chamber present their Charity of the Year award, sponsored by Fortem, to City Hearts UK, who received £3,000 prize money and will become this year’s Chamber Charity of the Year.

Business of the Year 2016 This award meant an awful lot to everyone at Universal Components, it was recognition of the 2 years hard work by everyone involved that helped us move to Barnsley, but also a very humbling moment, to know that we were amongst great thriving local businesses who are achieving great things in their respective industries. In-fact, this award was just the beginning, in the past year alone the UC (as we are known to our family) has expanded and employed 38 more staff to bolster an already thriving team. We have acquired EAG who are an automotive parts business based in Normanton, West Yorkshire who have big plans to use the UC DNA to grow just like we have. The last year also saw the inception of our own Land Rover parts company getoffroad.com into something very special that is already being noticed in the industry. We are very excited about the future of UC as we expand our family further, but also about the future of local businesses in the region as they continue to thrive. We wish you the best of luck and we hope that you enjoy this very special evening!

BUSINESS OF THE YEAR

Cannon Hall Farm crowned ‘Best of the Best’ at the Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards. The origins of the 2017 Barnsley and Rotherham Business of the Year were first laid more than four centuries ago. Cannon Hall Farm was singled out for praise amongst judges for the way in which owner Roger Nicholson drew on his lifelong commitment and passion for farming, stared adversity in the eye and made 2016 his best year of trading to date.

itself as the best attraction of its kind in the UK. In 2016, it achieved its best financial results to date, turning over £7.68 million and employing more than 250 people. Now aged 74, Roger continues to often be first out in the morning and the last to finish at night and everything that happens on site reflects his attitude and passion for all things farming.

Roger’s association with Cannon Hall Farm began in 1957 when the manor estate was broken up. His father purchased the farm, but little did Roger know that within twelve months, the then sixteen year old would be running the business.

Throughout the year the farm hosts a variety of successful events, allowing more full-time staff to be employed, whilst the Cannon Hall Food Festival has become an event which attracts tens of thousands of visitors over four days in August.

Farming, particularly for smaller farms has always been a difficult way to earn a living and by the 1980s the prospects for Roger’s farm were looking bleak. Spiralling debts meant the business was faced with a stark choice: diversify or close.

Despite the success enjoyed in the tourism sector, Cannon Hall Farm remains very much a working farm, producing beef, pork and lamb alongside bakery products including its famous pie. The result is a completely joined up business bringing together all aspects of the food, retail and service industry on the same site.

Never being someone to roll over without a fight, Roger began drawing up plans to transform his farm, developing ambitious plans to open the farm to the public as a tourist attraction. Today, Cannon Hall Farm has established

David Kernahan, Chief Executive of Universal Components said, “Cannon Hall Farm have proven over a significant amount of time what a progressive and

forward-thinking business they are. The great vision they had many years ago has come to together with plenty of hard work and dedication now employing 250 people. The facilities and produce that they provide to their customers are first class. They truly are a credit to the area.” Roger Nicholson of Cannon Hall Farm said, “I would like to thank everyone so much, it was truly unexpected for us to win the Business of the Year Award. We also accepted a 60 year Salute to Business on the evening, it has been a long journey for us and it has been my journey. The farm has been my life and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. We had a great evening and we’re all really proud to have won this award. It really is a team effort and we couldn’t have done it without the fantastic team back at the farm, who work so hard and do such a great job welcoming hundreds thousands of visitors every year.” Since 2015, Roger has invested more than £2.5 million in Cannon Hall Farm, resulting in growth of 22% across the business in 2016, following¬ growth of 29% the previous year. www.cannonhallfarm.co.uk

CHARITY OF THE YEAR

City Hearts UK win the hearts of the Judges Charity of the Year winners, City Hearts UK receive a £3,000 prize donation and become the Chamber’s Charity of the Year. The charity, which restore the lives of vulnerable and exploited men, women and children, were awarded with the Charity of the Year award at the 2017 Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards and received a donation of £3000 prize money. The award sponsor Fortem, who were part of the judging panel for this category said; “The number of volunteers that support charity work in our communities is to be applauded. It’s so difficult to pick a “Charity of the Year” when you are presented with such deserving winners, but when 773 words move you to tears, you know you have a winner!

“Enhancing life chances is at the heart of what we do at Fortem and this is certainly the same at City Hearts UK.” Kirsty Wilson, South Yorkshire Regional Manager of City Hearts UK said, “We are very thankful and honoured to be chosen as charity of the year. The £3,000 donation from Fortem and the Chamber will help us to provide a much needed service for trafficked children that have come into the area.” In the past 12 months City Hearts has housed over 245 women and men rescued from modern day slavery in the UK, alongside 155 children who have

been directly affected by trafficking and modern slavery. In South Yorkshire City Hearts have increasingly seen a lot of children being rescued from modern slavery. There was an increasing demand to give these children back their potential, after them being kept as slaves. City Hearts started a child therapeutic programme in the summer of 2016 to provide children a safe place to play, a safe place to show their emotions and just to be a child. Source Academy Apprentice of the Year Award JACOB FOX BERNESLAI HOMES “It’s fantastic to be recognised by the Judges of the Apprentice of the Year award for the work I’ve completed while I’ve been working for Berneslai Homes. I’ve had many great opportunities and the course work and qualification will be really valuable as I progress my career. It hasn’t been a traditional IT apprenticeship and I’ve had the opportunity to be able to work face to face with customers who find technology challenging and this has been amazing. I’ve grown-up with technology but some customers are really worried that they don’t understand it, just don’t know what’s in it for them and cost is an issue for many. We can help and I’m pleased to be able to play a part.”
