CHAMBER VIEW

President’s

Foreword Well, it has been over a year now since I took on my role as your President; what a whirlwind year it has been. As an organisation we are a voice for business, both locally and at a national level and we are apolitical. We can support and advise around lobbying, we can connect people and we are there to signpost all the amazing services that are available, both within our own membership, as well as around our region. Our training arm CSS, is successfully doing this too. To be part of that and see it in action and working, with such a small pool of resources is fabulous. We do try and meet the needs of all our members - if you do need help, you must ask, it is a two-way thing and you also have the Membership Survey to complete and receive feedback from that if you want it. The Quarterly Economic Review too is important to complete. They don’t take long - the length of a nice cuppa usually - so please air your views, it can really help. The one outstanding message for me is that ‘Confidence Runs an Economy’ and that goes for everything in my view. The minute the confidence starts wavering it is like you are stood on shifting sand. You know you can do it, so just go and do it! Last year had a few rocks in the road, not least the unexpected general election, Brexit nationally and more locally the Devolution debacle have dominated the news. As a local businessperson with a national portfolio of customers, I am

proud to meet and speak to people all over the country. There is some great business happening. In my view, we should make considered decisions and follow them through. We need to get on with things, not keep going around in circles brewing up storms. I will keep reiterating, Confidence, Collaboration and Connectivity will get us through at all levels.

chartered accountants

Petty squabbling, whether in our own teams, or locally and nationally, does not help move us forward. Focus is the key, so let’s do it! Celebrate little wins and big ones and get thinking on who you can put forward for the Athena Awards and our Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards, both great events coming up in June and October. In the meantime, we will be focussing on several events on the calendar. A big one for me is always International Women’s Day on 8th March. Have a great year and if you feel we can help you do that, let the team know how. All the best for a great 2018 !

CHAMBER NEWS

Chamber celebrates start of 2018 by welcoming two new patrons A property solutions provider responsible for fixing and improving thousands of properties across the UK and an award-winning public relations consultancy have been welcomed by Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce as the organisation’s newest patrons – the highest level of membership available within the organisation. Fortem, sister company to construction giant Willmott Dixon, joined the Chamber in 2016 and since then the company has actively supported many Chamber initiatives, including the organisation’s annual awards event. The company is responsible for undertaking a full range of property solutions for a large number of valued clients across the housing, bluelight, public buildings, education and care sectors and counts Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, Midland Heart and Orbit housing amongst its national client base. The company employs over 160 people from its base at Bradmarsh Business, Rotherham and plays an active role in supporting a wide range of community initiatives, investing more than £1.2 million in community led projects during 2017. At the same time, the company actively works to create skilled jobs within the local economy, through its highly regarded apprenticeship programme. Cannon PR, which is headquartered on High Street, Rotherham was formed in 2011 by award-winning Public Relations professional Matthew Ridsdale. Since its inception, the company has delivered a comprehensive range of communications services aimed at helping businesses throughout South Yorkshire to grow. A member of the Public Relations Consultants Association, over the past six years Cannon PR has supported a wide range of businesses within the technology, professional services and food and drink sectors as well as being responsible for supporting business finance specialists Finance For Enterprise and the Sheffield City Region Launchpad

Programme, responsible for helping new entrepreneurs to take their first steps in business. Cannon PR has also played an active role in supporting a number of Chamber-led initiatives including the unique Gallery Town project, designed to stimulate regeneration within Rotherham’s town centre, whilst company founder Matthew also sits on the Chamber’s Member Representation Council, a role which he has held since 2012. The addition of Fortem and Cannon PR bring the total number of patrons at Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber to 19 businesses including ASD Lighting, Gibson Booth, Westfield Health, Barnsley FC and Rotherham United FC. Mick Williamson, Managing Director, Fortem said: “We first joined the Chamber in 2016 because we felt it was important to build stronger links with the local business community, enabling us to continue to invest in the communities we serve and creating opportunities to support others. Since then we’ve never looked back! “Over the past twelve months alone, our work with the Chamber has helped us to create new jobs within the local economy, whilst also being able to play a greater role in the local community through our active volunteering programme. We see our role as a patron being very much about investing back into the communities we serve.” Matthew Ridsdale, Director and Founder of Cannon PR said: “I’ve been proud to support the work of the Chamber for more than a decade and when I decided to launch Cannon PR in 2011, one of the very first calls I made was to the Chamber.

“It’s been terrific to see the Chamber grow and evolve, particularly over the past eighteen months. Last year saw Cannon PR enjoy a significant period of growth and as a Rotherham-based business we are proud to support our local Chamber over the next twelve months. “The Chamber of Commerce is an important organisation for local businesses, one which helps to provide support and representation and through Cannon PR’s involvement we have also been able to use our skills and expertise to support a number of community led initiatives. For me, becoming a patron is about not only supporting the local business community but helping to create opportunities to build a stronger local economy. Andrew Denniff, Chief Executive, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber said: “On behalf of everyone at the Chamber, I’d like to give a very warm welcome to our newest patrons, Fortem and Cannon PR. Both businesses have actively supported the Chamber for a number of years, and I’m sure they will both continue to play key roles in helping to strengthen and support our growing membership. “Becoming a Chamber Patron is not only a commitment towards supporting the work of the Chamber, but also about illustrating how local businesses come together to support common interests such as playing an important role in the communities we serve as well as adding weight and gravitas to the role the Chamber plays in supporting businesses in both Barnsley and Rotherham.

Christmas events success for the Chamber Three festive themed events were held across the region in December, which saw over 270 guests in attendance. The festivities kicked off on the 1st December at Tankersley Manor Hotel for the Chamber’s Annual Christmas Dinner, enjoyed by 160 guests and featuring entertainment from awardwinning comedian Lea Roberts. Over £1200 was raised by attendees on the night for local charities through a tombola and raffle. Women in Business, a working group of the Chamber, returned for its Annual Christmas lunch on the 8th at the wonderful Whitley Hall Hotel and was a great opportunity for women from across the South Yorkshire region to get together and celebrate both the Christmas season and the successes of 2017. To complete the festive line-up of events, Chamber members and nonmembers from across the Sheffield City Region were invited to join Chamber

staff and President, Lisa Pogson, for coffee and mince pies on December 12. Over 50 people were in attendance and 52 mince pies and 15 jugs of coffee were consumed! Christmas was season of giving and across all three events, the Chamber fundraised and collected donations in support of the Charity of the Year, City Hearts UK. An astonishing £1,275 was been raised throughout December and will be used to support vulnerable and exploited men, women and children located in the Sheffield City Region.

British Land completes its £60 million refurbishment of Meadowhall British Land, joint owner of Meadowhall, one of the UK’s premier shopping destinations, is celebrating the completion of the £60 million refurbishment of the centre. British Land, joint owner of Meadowhall, one of the UK’s premier shopping destinations, is today celebrating the completion of the £60 million refurbishment of the centre. This marks the end of a two-year programme, during which £40 million was invested in store upgrades by more than 70 brands including existing and new additions to Meadowhall’s line-up. This combined investment of £100 million has already made a positive impact on performance, with footfall on Black Friday up 8%, making it the busiest on record. The prime Zone A rental tone has risen to over £400, reflecting very strong demand for space with 30 new retailers signing in the last 18 months. Charles Maudsley, Head of Retail, Leisure and Residential for British Land, said: “The transformation we have achieved at Meadowhall is a great example of how we have listened to our customers and responded to their needs to create space that works for shoppers and enables retailers to thrive in an omnichannel world. Founder Richard Pogson, an experienced air conditioning engineer, was determined to offer first-class service based on honesty, quality and value for money. Airmaster soon grew into an established and reputable business, Tony England joined the company in 2000 to share the business and it continued to go from strength to strength. Ian Chapman who has worked with Airmaster since 2004 as QSHE Advisor said: “Airmaster already knew that the company was operating to high standards and that gaining the certification would confirm this to our customers”. “But there was also more to it than that: we also anticipated that working towards certification would bring further improvements within our internal systems allowing greater control over business growth and helping to provide an even higher quality experience for our customers.” Ian adds: “Gaining these certifications proves that we are what we say we are.” Lisa Pogson recalls: “Because of the team apart from Ian had through this before, we didn’t what to expect, so there

understandably a little nervousness. But all we had to do was educate on the process and what was expected, so nobody felt threatened and everyone was included.” The company has also always recognised its obligations to the environment, not least because of its work with fluorinated gases and the replacement and disposal of defunct equipment. Certification to ISO 14001:2015 would endorse this commitment and ensure that formal processes were in place. Airmaster has achieved certification to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015, with both audits carried out by SGS United Kingdom Ltd.

InfiSIM launch NOVA; the pinnacle of M2M SIM Management Paving the way for the future of the Internet of Things. At the beginning of 2016 Rotherham based telecommunications provider, DuoCall, noticed a gap in the IoT (Internet of Things) market for an M2M (machine to machine) provider that could deliver leading levels of connectivity, management capabilities and customer support. By August 2016 DuoCall had launched a sub-brand to fill this gap, InfiSIM. InfiSIM has now grown into one of the most widely known M2M providers in the UK and sits as its own company at the top of one of the most competitive industries today. They are now providing a plethora of different M2M solutions to business all around the world. The increasing demand for M2M SIM cards has had a huge influence on InfiSIM’s exponential growth over the last couple of years. These SIMs provide data connectivity between two or more machines so that business processes can be automated. There are many different types of M2M SIM card available, including non-steered multi-network roaming SIMs. Non-steered solutions are often preferred to steered ones as they don’t default to a single network; they always connect to the strongest one available. This network roaming capability is a huge advantage for businesses that need to deploy large quantities of hardware to

locations within the UK or worldwide. Identifying an industry-wide obstacle InfiSIM Director, Phil Coley, said: “The M2M industry is cluttered with a magnitude of different solutions, networks and platforms. As more of these IoT applications emerge across the globe, the demand for a more diverse range of connectivity is increasing at an alarming rate. This regularly leads to the purchasing of M2M SIMs from multiple different suppliers, making management near-impossible.” After noticing that businesses around the globe were juggling M2M management tools and struggling to monitor their connectivity, InfiSIM set about fixing the issue. They are now furthering their success by launching a new M2M SIM management platform that will revolutionise the way we manage our IoT; Introducing NOVA. Managing the Internet of Things with NOVA NOVA provides businesses with access to their entire M2M SIM estate, regardless of whether their SIMs are active or not. Almost any feature M2M users wish to manipulate can be controlled in this single platform: • Activate/Deactivate SIM Cards • Analyse data usage in real-time

• Manage devices and upgrade firmware • Manage locations • Deploy usage alerts to avoid overspending • Admin management - create sub groups for different sites, departments, individuals, customers and more • Create white/black lists of specific IP addresses and URLs with cloud-based security profiles • Manage existing SIM cards by uploading CDRs/radius servers • Multi-network compatible • Access NOVA from anywhere – Desktop, tablet or smartphone “From the get-go we envisioned InfiSIM changing the way the IoT industry would work and NOVA may be our key to accomplishing this. NOVA will enable businesses around the world to easily manage their M2M SIM estates on a casual or industrial scale with one of the most feature-rich tools available. We’re extremely excited to be launching this unique management platform.” - InfiSIM Director, Phil Coley.

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

Brexit, business and British trade on agenda at QES breakfast Challenges, opportunities and the economic outlook facing the local business community will be placed under the spotlight when the final results of the Sheffield City Region’s Quarterly Economic Survey are revealed in January Throughout November, businesses from across the Sheffield City Region were asked their views on a number of subjects, ranging from growth and expansion plans to how they felt the local economy was performing. The results will be delivered by Dr David Littlewood, a lecturer in strategic management at the University of Sheffield’s Management School. The event will focus upon how South Yorkshire businesses are rising to the challenges of the current economic climate, the impact of Brexit upon local and international trade as well as placing the support business owners need under the spotlight. Attendees will also have the chance to voice their concerns and opinions during a panel discussion, which will examine ‘The struggles businesses face when accessing new markets’. Chaired by Greg Wright, Deputy Business Editor of The Yorkshire Post and featuring a number of local business leaders including William Beckett, Chair of the International Trade Forum, Chloe Watmore, General Manager of Thermotex Engineering Ltd, Edward Naylor, Chief Executive of Naylor Industries Plc and a representative from the Sheffield City Region. Sponsored by The Source and funded by the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership and Growth Hub, the Quarterly Economic Survey is run by the Sheffield City Region’s four Chambers of Commerce; Barnsley & Rotherham, Doncaster, Sheffield and East Midlands. The results of each survey help to shape the

support available to the local business community within the region. Lisa Pogson, President of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber, said: “In the current economic climate local business owners and industry leaders have a lot of concerns, especially in regards to the impact of Brexit, and what this will mean when it comes to exporting overseas and how they can harness local and international trading opportunities. Impacts on our domestic market, particularly around inflationary pressures and wage increases are also a key concern that we hear repeatedly from our members. “Our Quarterly Economic Survey provides a snapshot of the local economy and visitors to this event will be given the chance to be amongst the first to find out about the health of the local economy, whilst offering an opportunity to debate issues which are impacting upon business growth with senior business leaders.

“Our last event highlighted how businesses are struggling to access new markets. To encourage and support businesses, a “How to Access New Markets” workshop will also be taking place at the event, hosted by Vanda Priestly, Trade Adviser from the Department of International Trade (DIT)”

Friday 12th January at The Source, 300 Meadowhall Way, Sheffield, from 8am to 10am. The event is free to attend and is open to business leaders and owners across the Sheffield City Region. To book your place, please visit screconomy.org.uk

GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATION

5 Months to go That’s how long organisations have to ensure that they are GDPR compliant. It’s a little-known fact that The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into European Law in May 2016, and it will enter into force across all EU member states (including the UK) on the 25th May 2018. Ahead of GDPR entering into force, Vice President of the European Commission released the following statement: “As of May 2018, the new rules of the General Data Protection Regulation will enter into application and give a strong basis for the Digital Single Market to flourish. The new rules will protect the EU citizens’ fundamental right to personal data protection. Everyone will benefit from new and clarified rights. For instance, you will have the right to know as soon as possible if your data has been breached or used unlawfully. It will also be easier for citizens to complain and obtain compensation if they think their rights are not respected. No matter where your data is stored, you only need to contact your closest supervisory authority. With sanctions of up to 4 percent of annual turnover, authorities will also be in a position to enforce the new rules through penalties or other undertakings where appropriate.

18

Bulletin

Businesses will benefit from more legal certainty, with a single set of rules across the EU. This will not only make things simpler, but also cheaper. SMEs benefit from exemptions to ensure that the rules are adapted to the needs and capacity of smaller firms. More generally, the data economy can enable business growth, modernise public services and empower citizens. On the 25th of May 2018 The General Data Protection Regulation will finally become a reality. It is crucial that we make them work in practice.” Businesses across the UK are now becoming aware of the impact GDPR will have on them. All businesses, charities, government and schools have to comply with GDPR – it’s the law. The best approach is to simply ‘do something’ any proactive moves an organisation makes towards achieving compliancy will be viewed favourably by the ICO (Information Commissioners Office) and help to negate the highest level of possible fines. Many of the main concepts and principles are much the same as those in the current Data Protection Act (DPA), so if you are complying properly with the current law then most of your

approach to compliance will remain valid under the GDPR and can be the starting point to build from. However, there are new elements and significant enhancements, so you will have to do some things for the first time and some things differently. It is essential to plan your approach to GDPR compliance now and to gain ‘buy in’ from key people in your organisation. You may need, for example, to put new procedures in place to deal with the GDPR’s new transparency and individuals’ rights provisions. In a large or complex business this could have significant budgetary, IT, personnel, governance and communications implications. The GDPR places greater emphasis on the documentation that data controllers must keep to demonstrate their accountability. Compliance with all the areas listed in the ‘12 steps’ will require organisations to review their approach to governance and how they manage data protection as a corporate issue. One aspect of this might be to review the contracts and other arrangements you have in place when sharing data with other organisations.

Prepare for GDPR: 12 steps to take now 1. Awareness You should make sure that decision makers and key people in your organisation are aware that the law is changing to the GDPR. They need to appreciate the impact this is likely to have.

8. Children You should start thinking now about whether you need to put systems in place to verify individuals’ ages and to obtain parental or guardian consent for any data processing activity.

2. Information you hold You should document what personal data you hold, where it came from and who you share it with. You may need to organise an information audit.

9. Data breaches You should make sure you have the right procedures in place to detect, report and investigate a personal data breach.

3. Communicating privacy information You should review your current privacy notices and put a plan in place for making any necessary changes in time for GDPR implementation. 4. Individuals’ rights You should check your procedures to ensure they cover all the rights individuals have, including how you would delete personal data or provide data electronically and in a commonly used format. 5. Subject access requests You should update your procedures and plan how you will handle requests within the new timescales and provide any additional information. 6. Lawful basis for processing personal data You should identify the lawful basis for your processing activity in the GDPR, document it and update your privacy notice to explain it.

10. Data Protection by Design and Data Protection Impact Assessments You should familiarise yourself now with the ICO’s code of practice on Privacy Impact Assessments as well as the latest guidance from the Article 29 Working Party, and work out how and when to implement them to your organisation. 11. Data Protection Officers You should designate someone to take responsibility for data protection compliance and assess where this role will sit within your organisation’s structure and governance arrangements. You should consider whether you are required to formally designate a Data Protection Officer. 12. International If your organisation operated in more than one EU member state (i.e. You carry out cross-border processing), you should determine your lead data protection supervisory authority. Article 29 Working Party guidelines will help you do this.

7. Consent You should review how you seek, record and manage consent and whether you need to make any changes. Refresh existing consents now if they don’t meet the GDPR standard.

High speed internet company to provide Sheffield WI-FI Free wi-fi is on its way to the Outdoor City. Sheffield City Council and Sheffield based Idaq Networks Ltd have announced a 10-year deal that will see IDAQ provide free of charge high-speed Wi-Fi internet access in the outdoor areas and public buildings of Sheffield city centre. The service, which will be known as Sheffield Free Wi-Fi, will help the council meet its ambition to be one of the best connected cities in the country and help make the city centre more vibrant. Idaq will provide the Wi-Fi service by installing superfast and ultrafast broadband equipment to councilowned street lights and street furniture. The network will be available free of charge from next May to help innovative digital projects get off the ground, such as those led by the Sheffield Universities and Sheffield Digital. Idaq will also use the network to provide a range of exciting cutting edge ultrafast broadband products and services to the residents and businesses of Sheffield city centre. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “I am absolutely delighted that we are working with a Sheffield company to provide one of the best public access Wi-Fi services in the country. “The network will make the city centre a more attractive place to spend time visiting and shopping. It will also provide free of charge internet access to those who may not be able to afford it. “The network also offers exciting

opportunities for developing new and innovative products and services in Sheffield, by local organisations.” Councillor Olivia Blake, deputy leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “This announcement will help Sheffield to fulfil its digital ambitions. We are already the city with the most rapidly growing digital sector and now we are on the verge of having a free city wi-fi package that will benefit businesses, visitors and residents alike.” BID Manager Diane Jarvis said: “We believe that free Wi-Fi will drive greater footfall, supporting the high street and the local economy, and at the same time make it easier for visitors to access information about the city centre, such as retail and leisure attractions. “The BID has lobbied for increased connectivity standards for Sheffield city centre for some time now and its fantastic news that the Council has now awarded a contract to make free Wi-Fi a reality.” Mark Roebuck, Director of IDAQ Networks Ltd, said: “Everyone at Idaq Networks is very excited to be involved in this project. We are a local company and we have already invested heavily in Sheffield developing a commercial network providing high speed internet access to local businesses. “Apart from the obvious benefits to our company this project will enable us to bring free internet access to everyone living in, working in and visiting the City centre in a very short period of time. The project will also allow us to help the Universities, innovative individuals

and business start-ups with the development of new technologies and products.” The network will be implemented in four phases: Phase One will be the Theatre District/ Retail Zone (inc Fargate, Moor, Tudor Sq, Peace Gardens, Pinstone Street). The long-established centre won Best Interior Sign for their incredible work within the Fluoroscopy Department at Sheffield Children’s hospital. The centre has completed a great deal of work with The Children’s Hospital Charity, Artfelt, who works with local artists to transform the walls and spaces with bright art to provide distraction during anxious moments

and to help children recover in an environment tailored to them. Steve Morris commented, “Our surroundings can have a powerful effect on how we feel, which is especially important in a hospital where the environment can influence well-being and comfort for patients. The fluoroscope itself can be very intimidating which can add to the anxiety of seriously ill or injured children and their parents, so it was a great pleasure for us to be able to transform this space with colourful wall graphics”.

Employers set to help the region’s youngsters ‘Get up to Speed!’ The date has been released for the next ‘Get up to Speed’ (GUTS), the region’s largest engineering and skills event specifically for young people aged 8 to 25 years. GUTS will return to the Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham on 18th April 2018. This hugely popular interactive event is designed to showcase science, technology, engineering and manufacturing and its employers to young people, parents and educators in the South Yorkshire region and beyond. Now in its eighth year and attracting over 2,100 attendees in 2017, the event aims to inspire; build confidence and knowledge in these sectors as a great place to work in a fun and interactive way. A number of local and national employers and organisations are already signed up to sponsor the event, including South Yorkshire companies Liberty Speciality Steels, Cooper Brown Enterprises, AESSEAL plc, Doncasters Bramah, Highlander IT & Telecoms, plus the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). School children will be attending, not only from South Yorkshire, but from all over the UK. John Barber CEO of the work-wise Foundation and Chair of the GUTS Steering Group explains “Engineering alone requires 186,000 new staff nationally every year between now and 2024 to fill the expected skills gap. Companies that take part in ‘Get up to Speed’ understand the need to promote the industry to young people to ensure that there are enough talented and skilled recruits entering the industry to fill the growing skills gap. Get up to Speed also helps to enthuse the next generation of engineers.” Many local companies and some national companies get involved in the event through the work-wise Foundation

and attend with their apprentices and graduates to talk to young people and those who educate and influence them about the opportunities and careers open to them. Eight years on some of those early visitors are attending as apprentices and graduates and telling their own stories and inspiring others. Mick Hood, human resources director at Liberty Speciality Steels, said “We continue to support the Get up to Speed event because it is a fantastic way of raising awareness among young people, teachers and parents of the exciting opportunities on offer when you choose an engineering or science-based career. Each year the event goes from strength to strength and the 2018 GUTS looks like it will be the best and best yet!” John Barber adds: “Get up to Speed is free to visit and is designed to inspire and inform through a wide range of hands-on activities, showcasing many different businesses from traditional to advanced technologies plus support and education organisations. For the 2018 event we will extend the focus to science and technology as well as engineering and manufacturing as we recognise the ever changing range of

opportunities opening up to young people.” Get up to Speed consists of a range of interactive and exciting activities, which has included Virtual Reality Welding, CNC Machining, VR and Augmented Reality tools for the rail industry to a human powered sail rocket and hang gliders, a bi-plane with Vulcan and a female stunt pilot. Inspirational vehicles have been displayed including the Bloodhound SSC, F1 cars, Drag and Racing Motorcycles, Armoured Military Vehicles, Rail Ranger off road vehicle that also runs on rail tracks and University Formula Racing Teams, a friendly Dalek robot! There will also be teacher awareness seminars on the day so they can take back to school knowledge and practical information.

Any schools, colleges or individuals interested in attending or exhibiting should contact John Barber at john@work-wise.co.uk or visit www.getuptospeed.org. uk to find out more and register.

£12m bus station revamp approved The planning application for the long-awaited revamp of the bus station in Rotherham town centre has been approved. Architects at Jefferson Sheard submitted the application earlier this year focused on refreshing the concourses with upgrades to flooring, plinths and glazing. The main pedestrian entrances are also set to be revamped along with improvements to

the interchange car park. Work is anticipated to start in Spring 2018 and last for approximately 12 months. The potential use of nearby Forge Island for a temporary bus station is being discussed.

Ben Gilligan, director of public transport at SYPTE, said: “I’m delighted that SYPTE is working again on a major transformation project with Jefferson Sheard, improving facilities for the 12 million customers who pass through this busy interchange each year.”

Newburgh expands machining capability

Another step forward for Steel Man Plans have been submitted for a £1m Interpretation Hub forming part of ‘The Steel Man’ which is designed to support and the experience of visitors to the landmark sculpture. The 32 metre stainless steel sculpture will stand on a former landfill site at Kimberworth in Rotherham, overlooking the M1. Plans were approved conditionally in 2012 for the art installation based on work by local sculptor Steve Mehdi. If approved, the Hub will offer the

opportunity for visitors to learn more about industry and heritage. It also offers insight and awareness of potential future careers. With areas for exhibitions, learning and activities associated with sculpture along with a canteen, staff room, shop and outdoor play space, the hub will ensure that the project is viable and financially sustainable.

Rotherham engineering specialists, Newburgh Precision Ltd, has invested £500,000 in a new CNC machining centre to produce highvalue components for the defence industry. The Kafo KMC-4140 double column gantry was purchased to meet the demand of a defence contract awarded in the first quarter of 2017 but it has already led to new orders being placed. The firm’s first contract direct from the Ministry of Defence is for a duration of seven years for the manufacture of spares for Light Guns.
