CHAMBER VIEW

Chief Executive’s

Foreword

As the president mentioned in our first publication of the new year we were looking forward with great anticipation to 2018 and I am pleased to say that this was enhanced with the acquisition of a further new patron, Watermans in February (details of which appear later). 2018 is however an election year and next month we will elect the first mayor for the city region. The focus will be clearly around how devolution can benefit our regional economy and how this will impact on local businesses. Don’t miss out on the business focussed Mayoral Hustings breakfast session at The Source at Meadowhall on Friday, 20th April. Away from local politics the Chamber continues to engage widely, and we will continue to focus, with our partners on how we can not only deal with some of the major challenges facing our region, but also contribute towards a broad and positive approach to the looming Brexit deadline. In less than a year we will be no longer members of the European Union and whilst negotiations continue apace it is becoming clear that there is no agreed end-game from the UK’s perspective and that the EU negotiators, as we always thought, ‘hold most of the cards’. It is essential that your Chamber continues to represent as best we can the broad, diverse views of all our members and that through our national body, the British Chambers of Commerce, we press the government to get the best possible deal for UK business and that we are not sold short by our own negotiators for the sake of

political expediency. With under a year to go, our negotiators must redouble their efforts to find pragmatic and practical solutions to the many questions being asked - from product standards, to VAT, to customs, to immigration - businesses need answers fast. The onus is now on the UK government to deliver those answers.

We have much to look forward to later this year with developments around Barnsley town centre coming to fruition, the continuing impact of major investments in advanced manufacturing with McLaren, Rolls Royce, Boeing, Siemens and others, the start of the flagship, major tourist attraction at Gulliver’s Valley and not least the opening of the new extended TramTrain link into Rotherham and Parkgate. All in all, there continue to be many challenges, not only facing business but also impacting on the wider community we all live and work in. The Chamber will continue to influence where it can but also represent the best interests of our members wherever possible.

Chamber grows together with brand new Patron A family business which manufactures a range of premium hair growth products in South Yorkshire has been welcomed as the newest Patron member of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce. Watermans, founded by husband and wife team Matt and Gail Waterman in 2014, are responsible for producing a revolutionary range of hair growth products including shampoo, conditioner, scalp elixir and vitamins. Initially operating from their home, the company has grown to become a household name in the hair and beauty industry, exporting their products across the globe and supplying to Australia, South Korea, USA, Canada and Europe to name just a few, as well as recently securing their first department store contract in Taiwan. Drawing on her 26 years’ experience as a hair stylist and salon owner, Gail began noticing slow growth and damage to her own hair and after unsuccessfully trying existing products, she began searching for a solution. Combining ancient hair remedies with alternative therapies, the basis of the Watermans brand was born. Since launching, Watermans has enjoyed significant growth by selling one bottle of shampoo every 30 seconds. As well as producing their full range within the UK, the company operates four warehouse units, sells products online from watermanshair. com and Amazon, supplies hair salons across the world and regularly see their products featured in Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Tatler, Men’s Fitness, Women’s Fitness, Esquire and GQ. The company decided to become a Patron as a way of strengthening their presence within the local business community. They are one of three new Patrons who have

We are now setting our sights on the next phase of growth for the business and we felt becoming a Patron was not only a way of strengthening our links within the local business community, but also allowed us to access the range of the business support provided by the Chamber.”

Andrew Denniff, Chief Executive, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber said: “I am delighted that Watermans have come on board as our latest Patron. Hiring a PR Consultant? Public Relations is arguably one of the most powerful and effective ways to invest in the reputation of your business but what should you look for? It is a powerful communications tool which can contribute to new business wins, attract and retain staff members; but crucially, PR also influences how others think and feel about your business. Many organisations turn to PR agencies when they need a different perspective on their communications activity, or simply they do not have the internal resources to invest in a full-time communications function. Understand your aims: Think about your business plan. Where are you now? Where would you like your business to develop? PR activity should always be closely aligned with achieving your business goals.

Experience: Does the agency have knowledge and experience of working in your sector? Can they provide examples of previous work? Not all agencies publish previous client press releases on their website due to protecting client confidentiality, but most will be happy to provide references and examples of work upon request.

Chamber raises over £500 for Charity of the Year Chamber members and charity supporters got their heads together and put their thinking caps on to help raise £560 for the Chamber’s Charity of the Year, City Hearts UK, at the annual Chamber Quiz Night. Taking place on 21st March, over 150 participants from 30 teams took part in the Quiz Night, first launched in 2017, to raise funds and give back to City Hearts UK; a local charity which provides support to men, women and children who have fallen victim to modern slavery. The winning team, ‘This Isn’t the Woodman’ scored 59 correct answers out of 80, whilst losers ‘Hard Drives’ – consisting of employees from Rotherham based Open Network Services – took home the wooden spoon prize. Funds were raised throughout the night via a raffle and the Chamber’s Deputy Chief Executive Dominic Beck resumed his position as quizmaster for a second year. Event organiser Diane Graham said: “We are once again overwhelmed by the support we have received from our members and supporters, who came together to help us raise funds for a highlight the work this inspirational charity does within the community. “This is the second year we have hosted Charity Quiz Night and once again it

FORTUNE collaborated with partner Korn Ferry on this survey of corporate reputation. They began with a universe of about 1,500 candidates: the 1,000 largest U.S. companies ranked by revenue, along with non-U.S. companies in FORTUNE’s Global 500 database that have revenues of $10 billion or more. They then winnowed the assortment to the highest-revenue companies in each industry, a total of 680 in 29 countries. The top-rated companies were picked from that pool of 680; the executives who voted work at the companies in that group. To determine the best-regarded companies in 52 industries, Korn Ferry asked executives, directors, and analysts to rate enterprises in their own industry on nine criteria, from investment value and quality of management and products to social responsibility and ability to attract talent. A company’s score must rank in the top half of its industry survey to be listed.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport announces new Vision and 20 year Masterplan The award-winning Doncaster Sheffield Airport have launched their ambitious Vision and Masterplan outlining the expected growth over the next twenty years. The Vision sees the creation of a highly sophisticated Aerotropolis in the Sheffield City Region with the airport’s 1600-acre site, known as Aero Centre Yorkshire, becoming a central hub. The ‘airport city’ would help transform the North of England, creating 73,000 new jobs for the Sheffield City Region and provide exciting advanced manufacturing, logistics and aviation-led innovation opportunities. It is anticipated that the Vision would deliver £3.2 billion GVA per year by 2048 across the region. A key component of the Vision is the addition of an airport rail station connected to the East Coast Mainline; requiring only 7 miles of new track, it could be open in just five years’ time. The station would provide a direct rail link to London and Newcastle in under 90 minutes travel time. It would also be connected to major regional centres such as Sheffield, Leeds and Hull. Up to 9 million people living within a 90 minute journey time would have access to the airport by public transport, an increase of 6.6m.

The station would serve the airport’s passengers, onsite workers, new housing and employment areas – an estimated 1.6 million people per year, by 2037. Additionally, the rail station would accelerate the development of housing in the immediate vicinity and surrounding areas, with an initial delivery of over 8,500 houses anticipated. The Vision highlights the airport’s cargo plans in line with the increased passenger growth, as the site has the ability to handle up to 250,000 tonnes of cargo per year. This would support the UK’s international trade at a time when no airports across the UK are significantly expanding cargo capacity. Robert Hough CBE, Chairman of Peel Airports said: “This is a Vision with a central pillar that delivers air

connectivity, new housing, highly skilled employment, tourism and better rail connectivity at exceptional value for money, it is straightforward to build and deliverable in 5 years. It is of national significance for aviation and the economy, particularly the North, and we want to see it realised as soon as possible. This is required beyond what Heathrow expansion will deliver, with a range of benefits for the North and East of the country.” The airport’s Masterplan detailing the future development of the current site and projected growth over the next 20 years will now go out for public consultation. The airport is forecasting 4.7 million passengers and 70,000 tonnes per year over 20 years. Should a rail station be open by 2024, the expected passenger numbers would more than double to 11.8 million by 2050. Details on the 8 week public consultation can be found here www.flydsa.co.uk/masterplan The airport’s Vision Plan can be found here www.flydsa.co.uk/vision

Speakers included several female business leaders from across the region including author and mental health advocate Kathryn Littlewood; award-winning Managing Director of Thermotex Chloe Watmore; Gulliver’s Managing Director Julie Dalton and Chamber president Lisa Pogson, the clear message was that women can do anything, be anything and achieve anything. Among the presentations female entrepreneurs and their children hosted ‘Sofa Chats’ inspired by the Listening Project and developed by the BBC and National Archives, which explored the life of working mums from both sides. These included Rotherham based Grimm & Co Founding Director Deborah Bullivant and her son Luke Dale; filmmaker and entrepreneur Nuzrath Al-Baqir and her daughter Nabeela Mowlana and Graywoods Founder Deborah Lockwood and her daughter Danielle. #PressForProgress was the chosen theme for 2018 and highlighted the 100th year anniversary some women gained after the tireless campaigning by Suffragette’s across the world. The event highlighted how the role of women changed after this landmark decision and what, if anything, the role of women would be now should this

shift in politics not have happened. Jackie Freeborn, chair of Women in Business and co-host of International Women’s Day said: “This is the third year we have held an International Women’s Day event and each year it becomes bigger, better and more passionate. All the Chamber’s Women in Business events aim to help business women across Barnsley and Rotherham by providing support through collaboration to ensure they can grow and develop. “The real success of the event was to find how guests felt inspired, uplifted and motivated after hearing moving, funny and truly inspirational stories from our guest speakers and hosts. “I would like to say a huge thank you to every single person who joined us to help celebrate International Women’s Day. We are already making plans for our 2019 event!” Julie Dalton, Mother of two and Managing Director of Gulliver’s Theme Parks, said: “It was a real pleasure

Chamber Keeps Tackling Transport Challenges Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce’s Transport Forum is working with a number of partners to improve our transport system for both commuters and businesses. Their Transport Forum balances its focus between long term strategic opportunities such as improvements to Trans-Pennine connectivity routes and nationally significant infrastructure projects like HS2 as well as more local issues where traffic light changes and minor junction improvements give quick wins for members. The Chamber’s Transport Forum is made up of business owners who share experience, knowledge and an interest in keeping South Yorkshire’s transport moving. The group meets regularly with both Barnsley and Rotherham Councils, Highways England and SYPTE to discuss a range of issues facing businesses and commuters and to influence them for the best outcomes. Ann Beddoes, Transportation Manager of Barnsley Council said: “Barnsley Council recognises the many benefits of working with the Chamber and that the Forum is an ideal place to exchange information to get a real understanding of the needs of local businesses, for now and into the future.” Matthew Reynolds, Transport Manager of Rotherham Council added: “The Transport Forum allows the Council to have an in-depth insight into the views of local businesses to help ensure the effective implementation

and development of local transport schemes. The close collaboration of all partners involved within the Transport Forum ensures a cooperative relationship on major transport issues, allowing a single voice to be portrayed to infrastructure providers and regional decision makers. This is particularly important when discussing and forming a position on large scale infrastructure investment and the strategic issues facing businesses in our region.” In addition to helping local businesses facing day-to-day challenges with the region’s roads, the group has also played a key role establishing local business needs where major infrastructure projects are under development. This work has included involvement with several ongoing consultations including HS2, Tram-Train, the feasibility of a new Trans-Pennine Tunnel and supporting the growing development of the region’s airport at Doncaster. Clive Watkinson, Chair of the Transport Forum, said: “The Transport Forum gives our businesses a major voice in the way traffic and road-related issues are being addressed and we have a close working relationship with both local authorities and other public bodies in the region.

Prestigious award win for ‘Unsung Hero’ A long-standing member of staff at a South Yorkshire based alternative funding provider has been awarded the title of Unsung Hero of the Year after winning a prestigious award at the National Enterprise Network awards. Leanne Pilkington (31), a Finance Manager at Doncaster based Finance For Enterprise, added another trophy to the alternative funding provider’s cabinet after winning the Unsung Hero of the Year award. Instrumental in helping over 400 small businesses from across South Yorkshire to access over £500 million in financial support to help launch, develop and grow their business, Leanne was just one of four shortlisted from the UK in the Unsung Hero category, after being covertly nominated for the award by her colleagues at Finance For Enterprise who described her as a ‘hidden gem’ whilst highlighting her impact in helping the organisation to grow. After joining the not-for-profit organisation in 2012 as an Administration Officer, Leanne quickly displayed determination by taking on additional roles and responsibilities, mainly overseeing the re-brand of the organisation from Donbac to Finance For Enterprise in 2014. To further develop her role and career in the financial industry, Leanne spends her time after work studying at Doncaster College for an AAT qualification in Accountancy, of which the National Enterprise Network judges commended, saying it was “testament to Leanne’s attitude that she embraced all opportunities afforded to her.” Leanne was presented with her award

at a glittering awards ceremony which took place at the Nat West Conference Centre, London and was organised by the National Enterprise Network, a member body which represents enterprise support providers within England. She was presented the award by National Enterprise Network Chairman Graham Marley who praised Finance For Enterprise for “encouraging and allowing its staff members to grow and develop.” Leanne Pilkington, Finance Manager, Finance For Enterprise said: “It was a complete surprise to find out I had been shortlisted, as my colleagues submitted a nomination on my behalf and I didn’t know anything about it! But it was even more of a surprise when my name was called out as the winner. To hear the judges praise not just myself but the organisation I love working for was a real highlight of the night and I am proud to

Paula Foreman, Operations Manager, Finance For Enterprise, said: “I have worked alongside Leanne since she first joined us in 2012 and since then she has rapidly risen through the ranks at Finance For Enterprise and today she plays a vital role within the organisation. I am continually impressed by Leanne’s motivation, determination and desire to succeed every single day. She has made a huge impression in the six years she has been here and it’s a huge honour for a member of our team to be recognised by our industry body, the National Enterprise Network.” Responsible for supporting pre-start and growing businesses to overcome funding shortages throughout the Sheffield City Region, Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire, Finance For Enterprise delivers a range of tailored lending packages as an alternative to bank lending.

ROTHERHAM NEWS

Works to start on major Rotherham redevelopment scheme Work is due to start in April on a long-awaited redevelopment project which further boosts Rotherham’s continued regeneration. The £10m revamp of Westgate Chambers, designed by Sheffieldbased Self Architects, will see the creation of a showcase commercial, retail and residential development in the heart of the town centre. Located on an island site between Main Street, Westgate, Domine Lane and Market Street, the project involves renovating six buildings that surround a landscaped internal courtyard, including a superb Georgian Grade II listed building, one of the oldest surviving historic structures in Rotherham town centre. The scheme, by Peter Hill of developers HMP Bespoke Construction Ltd, will provide high quality retail, leisure and commercial space at street level with 29 contemporary apartments over

three floors. Dilapidated buildings on Domine Lane will be demolished and a new contemporary building will feature 7,000 sq ft of retail and commercial ground floor space with a further 32, one, two and three-bedroomed apartments above. Project Architect Simon Lunn, from Self Architects, said: “We were pleased to have secured planning approval on behalf of our client and are delighted to be part of the team on such an exciting courtyard development in the heart of Rotherham town centre.” The listed Georgian building, known as the Co-op building, was originally a fine residence built in 1794 by the architect John Platt. The proposals, approved by

Rotherham Council, include reinstating the Georgian façade and renewing the shopfronts in a style complimentary to the building and in keeping with the heritage-led development of Rotherham High Street. Peter Hill said: “ Works will start around the beginning of April on what will be around a three-year build programme. “These are exciting times ahead for all concerned with this prestigious scheme and we look forward to it moving forward with the additional regeneration of Rotherham town centre, bringing in new restaurants, entertainment and leisure facilities to help new residents to live, work, rest and play and most importantly creating new town centre jobs.”

Royal visit as Rotherham furnace reignited Two and a half years after being mothballed by the previous owners, the iconic N-Furnace at Aldwarke in Rotherham has been given the Royal treatment as it is reignited by Liberty Speciality Steel. His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales visited the site to mark a new era for steel production in the town. The move is part of a multi-million-pound investment by the Liberty House Group – a member of the GFG Alliance - that is creating 300 new jobs at Rotherham and its sister plant in Stocksbridge. The

800,000-tonne-a-year

Electric

Arc Furnace (EAF) turns scrap metal into specialised steels for uses such as vehicle gearboxes or aircraft landing gear. Sanjeev Gupta, founder and executive chairman of Liberty House Group, said the reignition was “a pivotal moment in the revival of UK steelmaking” and “a very powerful statement that steel does have a future in Britain.”

Rotherham places top as Yorkshire’s fastest growing economy Rotherham is the fastest growing city economy in Yorkshire, and the eighth fastest growing economy in the UK, according to a recent report.

McLaren inaugurates new Rotherham facility - in style British supercar manufacturer, McLaren, has used the freshly laid floor of its new £50m facility in Rotherham to showcase its latest supercar, called the McLaren Senna, for the first time. Supporting the firm’s objective of producing more than 4,500 vehicles annually by the end of 2022, the £50m McLaren Composites Technology Centre (MCTC) was announced in February 2017. It will enable the development and manufacture of carbon fibre chassis used in future

McLaren models. The 75,000 sq ft centre on the globally renowned Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) is set to open later this year to start building carbon fibre development tubs, with full operation planned for 2019.

The UK Powerhouse study is produced by Irwin Mitchell and the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) and provides an estimate of GVA growth and job creation within 45 of the UK’s largest cities 12 months ahead of the Government’s official figures. The report shows that Rotherham had a growth of 1.8% across October to December 2017. Rotherham rose 18 places on the GVA table to rank eighth in terms of growth. Cllr. Denise Lelliott, Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy at Rotherham Council, said: “Rotherham’s ambition is to create the right conditions for growth and regeneration and these results give confidence to businesses looking to invest in jobs, homes and developments within Rotherham.”
