CHAMBER VIEW

President’s

Foreword Last time we encouraged you to join us for hustings for the first city region ‘Metro’ Mayor - held at The Source, Meadowhall. In May, Barnsley Central MP, Dan Jarvis was elected - his top priorities: Economy; Skills; Transport & Infrastructure and genuine Devolution. Our Chamber Council puts Skills high on our Agenda and our newly created Working Group for Skills & Education has representation from both local colleges, (including new patron, Barnsley College) and local key training providers. We have already met with Dan Jarvis and agreed to continue this important work to highlight solutions. Chamber Skills Solutions (CSS) is busier than ever; strengthening the team with new staff, helping businesses to navigate the skills landscape. The Chamber group as a whole have had a brilliant year on limited resources as we look forward to another busy few months. We already have a great line up for our Chamber Means Business event on 6th September, it’s FREE to attend so book early via our website. We are also in the run up to the 2018 Business Awards - nomination forms are also on the website - what better way to showcase your business? Sole Trader or Patron, there will be an appropriate category to enter your business. We love working with the vast array of businesses in our area and we know some real shining stars. We can all look forward to the event in October at Magna, Rotherham and it would be great to see you there. The local Apprenticeship Awards in Rotherham at the end of June certainly put a smile on my face. Great stories

of how apprenticeships have worked, shows that a blended approach, different ways of “learning and earning” are key to our local economy. Our own Chamber team has great staff, some of which started with us as apprentices! Proof that ‘growing your own’ key staff is one part of our strategy. There is also the RISE project, where you can access graduates too - details of this is on our website - definitely worth a look.

It is great to see things moving at a pace in our part of the region. Lots of work around AMRC where McLaren got the keys to their new factory, the University Centre Rotherham (UCR) nears completion and Barnsley Town Centre regeneration is moving apace. Our two towns are forging ahead with their respective Masterplans. Finally, we were at events as different as Man Engine at Wentworth Woodhouse & Elsecar, the Barnsley Choir concert and the Cutler’s Feast, where dignitaries from all over the country came to listen to Lord Adonis and the message rings through... “We need to be bold and have confidence in what we do.”

Over the years, the college has been home to a number of famous faces and notable alumni includes Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner and Matt Helders, Egyptologist and TV Presenter Joann Fletcher and award-winning radio presenter and host of the 2018 Business Awards, Stephanie Hirst.

What makes a good news story? Millions of us read the news every day, but have you ever wondered why some businesses appear regularly and others remain forgotten? Avoid jargon:

Every day newspapers, websites and even social media channels share hundreds of stories and working with a PR practitioner can help your business to shape and influence the news agenda. So how do you make your business stand out from the crowd? One of the most effective ways of doing this is through producing a press release. Writing a press release can result in significant media coverage and knowing the rules of what makes a great story can be the difference between seeing your name in lights, or facing the dreaded editor’s spike. Here are few tips to consider: The Headline: Headlines should be catchy, creative and give a flavour of what the story contains.

A journalist wants to read your story, understand it and edit it as little as possible. If a phrase isn’t known outside your business, don’t use it! Answer the questions:

Picture this:

Can you answer the questions: Who, What, Where, When and most importantly of all, Why? If so, chances are you’ve got the basis of a great story. Always put this first and foremost when communicating with the media.

A picture can say a thousand words. Always consider professional photography to accompany your story.

Hit the right publications: Online, offline, trade, broadcast, tabloid, broadsheet… choosing the right audience for your story is vital. Spend time doing your homework. Remember, even on the same publication, different journalists have different interests.

Cannon PR offers professional press release writing, editing and distribution services.

Chamber sparks interest in regulations shake-up The Chamber is urging electricians and anyone who has responsibilities for installing or maintaining electrical circuits to prepare themselves for some significant changes which come into effect next year, with the publication of the 18th edition of the Wiring Regulations. Set to be published on 1st July, the new regulations will come into effect on 1st January 2019 and must be followed by everyone working in the electrical industry, replacing the 17th edition which is currently in use. The updated changes in regulations are expected to include protection against over-voltages, protection against fire, extensions in sections such as embedded electrical heating systems and the implementation of a brand new chapter on energy-efficiency. To help understand the implications of the new regulations, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber has announced the introduction of a number of courses focusing on the changes in regulations, which will be delivered by Chamber Skills Solutions, the Chamber’s training arm. The courses will run throughout the year, with the first taking place on 10th July. The three day-long courses are designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the new regulations and to equip anyone working in the electrical sector with the skills and knowledge to ensure their work complies with the new regulations.

Carrie Sudbury, Training Manager, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber said: “There is only a six month window for anyone working with electricity to get up to speed with the new regulations before they come into effect. As a support provider to businesses in Barnsley, Rotherham and the surrounding areas, we want to help anyone working with electricity to prepare themselves ahead of the introduction of the new regulations. “Throughout the year we are hosting a number of courses designed to provide a full overview of the regulations, as well as creating an opportunity for individuals working with electricity to understand how the new rules will be applied to their work ahead of the planned changes. The courses will provide participants with BS7671 accreditation and we are advising electricians to prepare themselves for the changes which come into effect next year.”

individuals working in Barnsley and Rotherham have the skills needed to succeed in the workplace and to ensure they are up to date with regulations and changes in their industry. Skills shortage in South Yorkshire The Chamber has recognised the need for action to address the skills shortage in South Yorkshire and has established a working group comprising members from industry and education. The group chaired by Frank Kler met recently with Dan Jarvis the new Sheffield City Region mayor to review the Chamber’s concerns. It was recognised that the Chamber is in an ideal position to link to employers throughout the region and to champion

their needs and requirements. The major topics discussed with the Mayor were: Careers advice, Adult Education Budget and Skills Bank 2. These topics were well received as the major has Skills high on Dan’s manifesto

and he is keen to work with the Chamber to address the skills shortage and improve the situation and increase the opportunities available to young people and adults. He recognises the need to match training and education to the requirements of local business.

Rotherham Print Business set for £1m turnover Gala Graphics, the Rotherham-based graphic design and promotional print specialist, is on course to achieve a £1m turnover, just four years after it was established. After doubling its income in 2016 and 2017 and securing a number of major new contracts with businesses including Company Shop and FlexSeal, Gala Graphics is once again expecting to double its turnover this year. Gala Graphics has recently experienced growth within the motorsport sector – a key sector serviced by its sister company Gala Performance. As a result, the company is now looking to appoint three new members of staff within its sales team this year and extend its product range to meet increasing demand. Managing Director Glen Robinson, Managing Director of Gala Graphics, said: “It has been a fantastic few years for the company. Our ongoing success is due to our commitment to employ highly skilled people and consistently invest in our equipment and services. We’re all excited to see what the future holds for Gala Graphics as we continue to break into new markets.” Glen is a member of the Gala C1 race team, which also includes Gala Tent Directors Mark Thompson and Andrew Scott. The team works closely with 2015 GT Cup champion Rob Gaffney of Amigo Motorsport, and competed in their first C1 Racing Club endurance

series race at the Rockingham motor speedway in May finishing a respectable 13th out of 32. Their next race is at Pembrey on the 10th June. Glen Robinson adds: “Taking part in the racing team has provided a great opportunity to showcase our products, as during meetings and events we always set up a fully branded hospitality area which includes a branded marquee and banners. Consequently we have secured quite a few orders and therefore our client base within this market is also growing.” With over 10 years’ industry experience, Gala Graphics specialises in producing high quality, bespoke promotional products such as banners, flags, roller banners, cafe barriers and exhibition stands and walling solutions. The company is based in a custombuilt facility in Rotherham, which allows the team of experienced designers and print technicians to work side by side, serving customers from around the UK and the rest of Europe, on both domestic and commercial levels. Gala Graphics is a division of Gala Tent, a company with over 17 years’ experience in design, manufacture and supply of marquees and gazebos to the events industry.

The Master Cutler continues his quest to visit manufacturers from every area of South Yorkshire Within the Sheffield City Region there are hundreds of manufacturing companies working in specialist fields, supplying services or making products for sale around the world. Recently, the Master Cutler, Ken Cooke, visited one such company based in the Barnsley area, Naylor Industries. This Made in Sheffield company has been in existence since 1890 but, with the guidance of CEO Edward Naylor and his team, they have developed into a 21st century company, manufacturing a full range of specialist building products from clay drainage pipes to plastic and concrete pipes with diversification into hugely popular Yorkshire plant pots which sell in their thousands. Naylor’s has contracts as far afield as the Middle and Far East and has built up a reputation for quality and service. “We are proud to carry the name of Barnsley on our products,” said CEO Edward

Naylor. “It is not unusual to see drainage pipes by the side of the coast road in Sri Lanka or elsewhere carrying the name of Naylor Industries, manufactured in Barnsley, England”. These pipes are designed to be laid up to 21 metres below the tarmac surface without disturbing the load bearing surface and likewise there is no disruption to traffic, travelling on it 24hrs a day. The Master Cutler said “Naylor Industries is a fine example of an established company re-inventing itself to become market leader through innovation.

They market their products around the world and continue to invest in equipment and personnel, including apprentices.” Naylor’s is a supporter of the Company of Cutlers’ Better Workers/ Better Learners programme in Barnsley and is an important part of Barnsley’s continuing regeneration.

Charity says Barnsley couple are foster-caring ‘top dogs’ When canine-loving Barnsley couple Simon and Hayleigh Webb realised they couldn’t commit to owning a dog because of their work commitments they decided on the next best thing. go to ‘school’ at the charity’s training centre during working hours.

The husband and wife from Darton became foster carers for Sheffieldbased national charity Support Dogs instead, and over the past three years have provided a loving home for a succession of assistance dogs in training.

Adds Simon:” Ultimately we’re the dogs’ ‘play family’ so we get all the downtime and fun time! “ Simon and Hayleigh are now massive advocates of the benefits of foster caring. “Most people we know are fed up of us talking about it, but it really is a great thing to do if you like dogs,” adds Simon. ”I’d really encourage people to think about fostering.

Support Dogs trains and provides assistance dogs for children with autism and adults with epilepsy and physical disability, enabling them to lead safer independent lives. The charity, although small, has grown rapidly over the past couple of years, and last year received over 4,000 requests for help from people all over the UK. While its work with children with autism is literally life-changing, reducing stress, enabling them to go out and stay safe, dogs trained for its seizure alert programme give a truly remarkable service - a 100% guarantee of detecting an oncoming epileptic seizure up to 50 minutes in advance. As well as enabling the client to get to a place of safety, this also gives them greater peace of mind and reassurance. Dogs trained as disability assistance dogs also perform a vital role, helping with everyday house-hold tasks such as opening and shutting doors, picking up dropped items, loading and unloading the washing machine, and fetching help in emergencies. The role of foster carers within the

charity is an essential one, as none of the Support Dogs’ dogs-in-training ever spend a night in kennels, but stay with local families during evenings and weekends. Two of the pups fostered by Simon and Hayleigh have now qualified as assistance dogs for disabled clients while a third has qualified as a seizure alert dog for a client with epilepsy. “We always wanted a dog, but couldn’t commit due to the care that’s need during the day, as we didn’t work near home,” explained Hayleigh. “Being a foster carer with Support Dogs gives us the perfect opportunity of adding a pet to our family, with all the convenience of the dog needing to

“When the times comes for the dog to leave us it’s difficult, there’s no denying it. But the rewards you get from watching a dog develop new skills that in turn will mean someone can live a life that so many take for granted is priceless And then you can look forward to fostering another one!” Danny Anderson, fundraising manager for Support Dogs, says: “Our dogs make a massive difference to many people’s lives but without foster carers to look after them while training, our work would be impossible. We’re incredibly grateful to Simon and Hayleigh and all our foster carers for their support.”

What happened next? Chamber’s Charity of the Year, City Hearts One of the most sought-after awards within the Voluntary and Community sector is theBarnsley & Rotherham Chamber’s Charity of Year. In 2017 this prestigious accolade was presented to City Hearts UK, a charity which was founded to protect and support victims of modern slavery and sexual abuse. We caught up with Kirsty Wilson, South Yorkshire Manager of City Hearts to find out how the £3,000 prize has been used to help make a difference in South Yorkshire: “When we were named as Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber’s Charity of the Year, we vowed to expand the support we offer for vulnerable families who have been the victims of trafficking and modern slavery. “As a result of the donation we received with our Charity of the Year accolade, we have been able to grow our Family Support team, enabling us to support more children. Each child benefits from tailored support according to their needs and goals. Sessions can range from family drop-in sessions to arranging trips and school holiday activities, emotional support, speech and English support, as well as specialised children’s counselling and respite from family care. “One of the stories which has directly

been affected by the Chambers donation is that of Thomas*. His mother had been trafficked and he experienced the most degrading and inhumane treatment. When Thomas and his mother were rescued, we discovered he was days away from being sold to a paedophile ring. Since coming to City Hearts, Thomas, his mother and his newly born brother have been helped by our family support team and the money we have received from Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber has enabled us to offer additional support. “Thomas’ assigned Family Support worker became a key role of support for him and was able to intervene when we discovered that he was struggling at school and being bullied. Meeting with him every week, Thomas and his Family Support worker focused on building his confidence through anti-bullying role play, helping him access specialised child counselling and respite activities. “Of course, Thomas’ story is only one from the many families we support on a daily basis. The generous donations we received over the past year from

Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber has made a real difference, helping numerous families to live happier and fuller lives as they recover, rebuild and move forward stronger together. “We are also extremely grateful for the support received from members of the Chamber who have made donations and who joined us for the Chamber’s Charity Quiz, held in March, where we raised further funds to help care for further families through our support programmes. “I would like to encourage fellow Chamber charities to apply for the Charity of the Year award at this year’s Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards. It really has made a difference to our charity, as would it yours.”

INTERNATIONAL TRADE

A Great Success - Trade Visit to Poland! William Beckett, ITF Chairman and Leader of the Trade Visit to Poznan reports on the recent trade visit to Poland with 12 companies participating from the Sheffield City Region. The programme of arranged meetings and events went like clockwork and the delegation was warmly greeted by all the people we met from all the different organisations. It began with a meeting at the British Polish Chamber of Commerce (BPCC) in the Poznan Town Hall where representatives from various business organisations had been invited to meet us. Presentations followed by the Director of the BPCC in Poznan, Ilona Chodorowska and the Director of DIT in the British Embassy in Warsaw, Lech Kaczanowski, on the trading opportunities for UK companies not only in the Poznan region, but in Poland generally. Impressively, he had flown into Poznan from Warsaw at midnight the night

because he said it was unusual for a trade mission of 12 companies to travel to Poland and that it was important for him to be present to meet us. He also emphasised how receptive he would be to receive enquiries direct from any of our group and other companies in our region wishing to explore exporting opportunities in Poland. He explained that Poland exports twice as much to the UK as we do to Poland, £11.45 billion as against £5.88 billion. He went onto say that of the £600 billion of international trade with the 10 Central European body of EU countries, the UK is only responsible for 2.75% of this. More alarmingly, he also noted that the UK through the DIT did not regard the Central European market as big enough to warrant the investment compared

with the large markets of China, India, US and S.E. Asia. This was extremely alarming to hear in that it demonstrates once again the UK’s lack of basic understanding in how to support smaller companies in trading internationally. Smaller companies do not have the resources, both in export skills and experience as well as financial support to focus on the large overseas markets as China and India. The focus should be more accessible and that means Europe and the EU, academic of Brexit because UK companies need to protect the business they have already got and pursue trade with the EU countries which like us and want to trade with us, e.g. the 10 Central European countries.

INTERNATIONAL TRADE The benefit of being ‘on the ground’ cannot be emphasised enough and as a result of the introductions on the first morning of our visit, meetings were arranged between some of our delegates whilst we were with them. Details will now be circulated to ITF members not on the mission for them to also pursue the opportunities in Poland. As the ITF, we were also delighted in that we now have a direct link with the Embassy in Warsaw to assist us with making contact with their counterparts in the other Central European countries, including specifically the Czech Republic, which is the next target market where we are planning to take a trade visit with the support of the next Master Cutler in 2019. Following this excellent start to our programme, we were greeted by Dorota Wallusch, International Affairs Coordinator of MTP, the Poznan Fair itself, which hosts the ITM Polska exhibition, who duly presented us with our ‘Welcome Packs’ which included free entry passes for the duration of the exhibition. We were given a short presentation on the exhibition and the use of a VIP lounge for us to hold meetings. As for us, the week got better with an

introduction to Andrzej Lyko, President of the Polish Chamber of Commerce in Poznan, who offered their support and cooperation in helping companies from our region expand into the market in their region. Again, unless we had been ‘on the ground’ we wouldn’t have been able to make these introductions and dealing with Polish organisations direct is far better. The companies on our trade mission worked extremely hard seeking leads and following up prearranged meetings. Another extremely useful thing we learned is the importance in Poland of ‘clusters’, which are regional

It is not the norm for companies to come away from trade missions with orders, but rather to establish links and connections with individual companies, organisations and even individual people themselves. Networking is essential in establishing contacts which are crucial for our companies to succeed in entering the market. For certain, everyone we met in Poland was friendly and wanted to help us; as such, I cannot think of a country I have been to in my past 30 years of international travel which has been so welcoming. It is now up to individual companies to use the opportunity our trade mission has presented them. It was a very successful trade mission in which we learned a huge amount about the market and its people and what a great country it is to visit made easy with the WizzAir flights from DSA to all parts of Poland.

Not only is the business growing in terms of staff, but we have also developed rapport with many Chamber members and local businesses who work closely with us to upskill their staff. “The move in-house for Chamber Skills Solutions provided a great opportunity for us to have more control over the delivery of the programme, allowing us to work more closely with local businesses to support their needs. We’re keen to spread awareness of CSS so businesses know support is accessible at times when they need it the most.”

A scheme is being designed to include no or minimal upfront or ongoing investment by the authority. A concession contract would see a private company install superfast and ultrafast broadband equipment in exchange for providing the bidder with exclusive use of council-owned street lights and street furniture for wireless communications. Cllr. Denise Lelliott, cabinet member for jobs and the local economy at Rotherham Council, said: “A key priority

for the Council is to extend prosperity and as the town centre repositions itself as a leisure destination, there will be more people living and socialising in the town centre. “Free Wi-Fi in public spaces and public buildings will really help residents and tourists connect with each other and stay in touch with local events, making the town centre a more vibrant destination and supporting local businesses to thrive and grow.”
