Brendan and I spending the ensuing years criss-crossing Devon from north to south, east to west – and, I have to say, I fell more in love with the county each time. From the cliffs of Croyde to the enchantment of Burgh Island, from the splendour of Powderham Castle and Bovey Castle to the breathtaking romance of country houses such as Pynes House, Rockbeare Manor and Coombe Trenchard, it’s been wonderful to visit so many incredible places and meet the warm, talented and passionate individuals of Devon’s wedding industry – the combination of which makes the county such a magical place to get married. It’s been a blast – and we couldn’t be prouder that Wed continues to be an integral part of so many couples’ journeys to the altar. It’s a privilege to be here with you at such a special and significant chapter in your lives. Thank you to all our wonderful readers, advertisers and industry friends who make this magazine such a delight to run. And, of course, a huge thanks to our brilliant team - Hannah, Lucy, Jenna, Morwenna and Matt. And now to the future. After the heartache of the past couple of years, I’m particularly excited about the upcoming weddings across Devon, which promise to be more joy-filled than ever. It was so moving to cover the first post-lockdown weddings and witness the palpable emotion of people coming together after so long apart. It’s been a vivid reminder of the special place weddings occupy in our lives – in bringing people together, in creating moments to cherish forever, in celebrating love in all its forms. We like to think of every issue as a celebration of Devon – and in this, our 50th issue, the county shines like never before. One of our favourite country house venues, Pynes House is abloom with gorgeous florals, timelessly elegant detailing and a generous helping of Bridgerton vibes in A Fine Romance. Another Devon gem, Brickhouse Vineyard is captivating in the depths of winter in Winter Wonder, where foraged treasures and ethereal styling meet super-chic fashions. Our real weddings take us from the windswept heights of Dartmoor in Tara and Kelvin’s wildly romantic winter nuptials to the idyllic setting of Upton Barn in Laura and Earl’s sun-drenched celebrations. Molly and Will’s wedding at Rockbeare Manor brims with music and sunshine, while the sense of happiness is palpable in every image of Kate and Tayler’s colourful moorland wedding. Love, joy and the beauty of Devon shines through each of these life-affirming stories – and, indeed, this very special issue of Wed! I hope you enjoy it. Rebecca x

IMAGERY WIZARDRY

Priding himself on an unobtrusive yet relaxed approach to wedding photography, the multi award-winning Peter Prior will produce a stunning set of emotive images that you’ll forever value as one of the most treasured keepsakes from your day. “Your wedding album will be far more than a set of pictures. I will have created a piece of family history that will be a priceless heirloom for generations to come,” he explains. “My aim when photographing a wedding has always been to produce timeless, natural and elegant images that capture the soul and essence of the occasion.” Tailoring his photography to suit your personal requirements, Peter will document as much or as little of your day as you’d like before presenting you with a handmade designer album packed with pictures you’ll wish to pore over time and time again (with a digital only option also available). For 2022/23, he is thrilled to introduce a selection of exclusive Devon and Cornwall packages that aren’t available to clients anywhere else the UK in a move to focus on shooting the majority of his weddings in the south-west. Part of these new additions includes brand new albums, which have proven particularly popular. Together with Peter’s creative eye and professional service, expect a wedding album that will allow you to relive and share your W-day in the most beautiful of ways. peterprior.com

WORDS OF LOVE

LOVE IN DEVON

“If I had a flower for every time I thought of you… I could walk through my garden forever.” Alfred Tennyson

A new wedding venue has opened its doors on the edge of Tavistock – and it offers romance and spellbinding scenery in abundance. Located in Lamerton, Hurlditch Court is a Grade II listed manor house boasting a rich history that dates back as far as 1351. The charm-filled house is flanked by incredibly pretty grounds where elegant gardens meet rolling lawns and a beautiful lake. With a myriad of stirring settings for ceremonies, choose from an elopement or intimate wedding for up to 14 guests in the Gatehouse or, for palpable romance, a celebrant-led ceremony by the lake. If you have your heart set on a church ceremony, the local church is a short distance from the venue. Verity Westcott Photography

As for receptions, you might choose a grand marquee or tipi reception by the lake for up to 80 guests or perhaps a stretch tent between the shepherd’s huts for up to 60. With ample space for garden games and al fresco festivities, imagine mingling with your nearest and dearest while taking in the idyllic country views and dancing beneath the stars as night falls. With accommodation for up to 14 on-site, ranging from the snug shepherd’s huts and Gatehouse to a cosy cottage, you can relax and savour the delights of this Devon gem over the course of a magical and oh-so memorable weekend. hurlditchcourtweddings.co.uk

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT There’s no finale to your W-day quite like a fireworks display, which ensures a magical endnote to your evening entertainment. A FINE ROMANCE

15

feature | STYLING| A FINE ROMANCE

Graceful, elegant and steeped in history, Pynes House offers period-drama-worthy romance in the picturesque Exe Valley. Indeed, it is believed to be the inspiration for Barton Park in Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. Flanked by sweeping meadows and woodland, immaculate lawns and bloom-filled gardens, the grounds set the tone for the wow-worthy interiors. The huge ornate doors open onto a stunning entrance hall with a dramatic stone staircase, an elegant Ballroom flooded with light and a myriad of beautifully styled reception rooms and bedrooms. As photographer Tara Statton explains: “It’s a real slice of English luxury, and I knew it would be the perfect location for some seriously dreamy fine art wedding inspiration.” Heaps of fresh florals, luxurious table styling and gorgeous bridal wear were the cornerstones of Tara’s vision of timeless romance. “We combined a palette of creams and golds with hints of pink and peach with candlelight, lavish stationery and floaty fabrics in the Ballroom for effortless style,” she says. The cake table echoes the soft palette, the crisp white confections styled with linens and florals in barely-there hues, while the carnival of fresh flowers make the most beautiful statement in the Drawing Room. “Our ceremony aisle was lined with a meadow of peonies, garden roses and dahlias, and when paired with some seriously stunning gowns, gave us total Bridgerton vibes,” says Tara. The gowns carry the aesthetic through delicate floral embellishment – think shimmery petal sequins and intricate laser-cut blooms – and skirts in shades of ivory and mink. Featuring clusters of enamel flowers, the dainty jewels and crown also nod to the current Bridgerton-inspired love affair with Regency style - a seamless blend of classic and contemporary for freshfrom-a-novel romance.

WINTER WONDER

There’s something about a winter wedding: the steely skies, the snug, twinkling touches, the sheer magic of making merry together while the blanket of darkness falls. This styled shoot captures the enchantment of the season against the stirring backdrop of Brickhouse Vineyard, an idyllic venue set amidst rolling meadows, vines and woodland in the hills of south Devon. “Foraged greenery, with feathers and twigs, contrasted with natural stone colours and textures, singing a winter hymn together and celebrating the wild countryside,” explains Phoebe Stanaway of Elisabeth Shell Events, who coordinated and styled the shoot. The moon shaped arch is a vivid expression of this wildly beautiful styling: a flurry of lichen, moss and foliage, dotted with homegrown flowers and pheasant feathers, makes an ethereal backdrop for a ceremony in the 18th century thatched Round House. The golden glow from the handcrafted rope chandeliers, together with the warm tones of the red bricks and oak beams, enhance the cosy ambience. Set against the blank canvas backdrop of the renovated Barn, the tablescape is nothing short of dreamy. Echoing the moon arch, foraged greenery nestles black candelabras and egg-textured vases springing with delicate stems and pheasant feathers. Beeswax flower favours sit alongside dainty blooms and vellum stationery on the metallic charger plates, enhancing the fragile beauty of the scene. And, resting on a bed of lichen, moss and white flowers, the stone textured cake, adorned with barely-there accents of gold, ties in perfectly with the aesthetic. With nature at the heart of the concept, careful sourcing was key for Phoebe. “I try to make sure that all the hire items I use are sustainably sourced and artisan-made and so Glas Events’ hire range was a perfect choice for the elegant black candelabras and unique charger plates,” she explains. Nature shares the spotlight with a strong bridal look. “Drawing on icy winters, the shoot showcases a fiercely feminine aesthetic with our stunning bride galloping through the vineyard on her beautiful grey horse, while her caramel vizsla is with her throughout the day,” says Phoebe. Teamed with a striking braid and smoky eye, the bridal separates bring bold and beautiful drama: there’s a black lace crop top paired with a hand-painted dip-dye chiffon skirt; then there’s the dreaminess of a dove grey printed top and hand-painted skirt in silk organza. Complete with her groom in a sharp, all-black tuxedo, the couple embody the wild romance of a wedding in the darkest months of the year.

Designers are currently enjoying their own obsession with form. Sculptural ball gowns, statement fishtails, modern tailoring and micro minis are all big on the runways, giving brides greater choice than ever when it comes to that all-important silhouette. But where to start? Here’s Wed’s lowdown on the latest dress shapes shimmying their way into a bridal boutique near you...

Fit and flare Flattering and fashionable, fit and flares continue to dominate the catwalk. A more relaxed version of the mermaid, it features a fitted bodice with a skirt that billows loosely from the base of the thigh. The result is a gown that accentuates the female form (sculpting and lending support for curvier figures and showcasing the slim waists of slender frames) while also allowing a greater degree of movement and dynamism of design. For example, detachable overskirts and in-built trains add a high fashion and whimsical edge, while deep sweetheart, scooped, plunging and off-theshoulder necklines pair perfectly with this beautifully versatile and uberfeminine silhouette.

show off their figure. Comprising a straight cut skirt and top, the sheath’s sleek, clean lines trace your contours (and lengthen shorter torsos), making it a supremely elegant choice. They’re also fantastically diverse and come in an array of fabrics from crepe and chiffon to all-over lace, allowing you to find one to match your exact bridal vision. Keep it chic with a strapless bodice, cap sleeves and subtle waist detail, or up the ontrend ante with a thigh-high split, statement veil, portrait back, nude underlay and embellishments like embroidery, beadwork, intricate lace and metallic threading.

a flattering and comfortable silhouette that loosely follows your physical outline. The result is a gown that allows you to focus on your assets or create a statement with the most head-turning design features du jour. Examples include a simple silk Mikado with centre thigh-high split and pointed V-neck, an illusion bodice with 3D floral appliqué and ethereal tulle skirt, or adopt the two-piece trend with bridal separates such as a silk camisole or an open back lace top and pleated satin skirt. Add dainty cap or long bishop sleeves for a more modest approach, or opt for delicate drapery, ruching and cover-ups such as a cape for minimalmeets-mystique style.

Ball gowns are a mainstay of bridal fashion for a number of reasons. Despite their reputation for being heavy and bulbous, nowadays they serve to

Vera Wang Bride, The Ivory Lounge

Ball gown flaunt and forgive all physiques, having evolved in recent years into light, dance-worthy confections fit for any bride, whether it’s traditional fairytale or modern minimalist style you favour. Close fitted on top and bell-shaped on the bottom, the beauty of the ball gown is that it is constantly being reimagined, making it one of the most highly wanted and wearable of all the silhouettes. Strapless remains a popular choice, ranging from off-theshoulder sweetheart necklines to seductive deep V plunges and lingeriestyle bustiers. Pick a minimalist satin ball gown (perhaps with a front split or giant back bow), or fuse fashion-forward elements with florals (lace, prints, 3D petals, botanical motifs, colourful embroidery), monochrome (via black accents such as a belt or appliqués, or embolden your look with a black bodice or overskirt), long or puffy sleeves, and a tiered tulle, waterfall or organza flounce skirt.

Shorter skirts Minis, high-lows and tea-length gowns are all making an appearance on the catwalks as designers continue to play with hemlines. The Little White Dress is back with aplomb and is shorter than ever (if you dare), while ballerina styles and ankle-length gowns offer a way to wear the look while baring less leg. From ’20s-style flapper skirts to statement ostrich feathers and ‘Black Swan’-inspired tutus, there’s an emerging aesthetic of revamped vintage wear making a beeline into bridal boutiques, which also includes disco dresses in eye-catching metallics. Meanwhile, asymmetrical high-lows of any length channel contemporary romance, ranging from softly tiered lace skirts to attention-grabbing ruffles and tulle overskirts thrown over a micro mini.

Mermaid The mermaid (or trumpet) remains one of the most glamorous dress shapes, blending an old-school screen siren vibe with contemporary couture for a look that’s both trendy and timeless. Hugging the entire body right down to the knees, the skirt then sharply flares out in a dramatic kick to exaggerate the natural hourglass. Here, playful and intricate elements can be used to draw the eye downwards and enhance the air of romance. Think feathers, ruffles and voluminous layers of tulle (in blush or pastel shades), which can be combined with corset tops with exposed boning, bodices with bare backs and cut-outs, and statement sleeves to garner maximum overall impact. Signature scent First things first, make your fragrance personal. “One of my favourite parfumiers, Jo Malone, offers the opportunity to have an in-store bespoke consultation to establish your signature scent,” says Jessica. “Every time you use your wedding perfume after your wedding, you’ll find yourself transported back to your special day.”

Your ceremony So often considered the highlight of the day, think carefully about how you’ll scent your ceremony – and how those scents will stir cherished memories of your vows for years to come. “Do you want to walk down the aisle in a room filled with your favourite scented candles? Add them to a collection of candles in tall cylinders to create a beautiful backdrop,” advises Jessica. “Make sure you pick a scent that matches your personality and complements what your partner is also wearing in terms of their perfume.”

Floral scents For a more subtle scent than that of candles or perfumes, choose a scented floral arrangement. “This could range from aromatic herbs with a sprig of rosemary in your bouquet to filling your reception or ceremony with swags of jasmine,” says Jessica. “Ask your florist what highly scented flowers are in season

Your venue A subtly scented diffuser can provide a good alternative to candles in venues that don’t allow flames, creating a lovely background ambience. “You could place these at the entrance as guests arrive as well as other areas they might visit, including bathrooms and bedrooms if you’re providing overnight accommodation,” suggests Jessica. “Think about whether you would like different scents as the day progresses, with subtler notes during the wedding

WRITTEN IN THE SAND Delicately textured and imbued with personal meaning, it’s little wonder that Justin Duance’s sandcast pendants are growing in popularity with brides seeking a special piece to wear on their wedding day. As versatile as they are beautiful, you might choose a pendant cast in sand from a beach which holds a special place in your heart – perhaps the beach of the proposal or location of the big day itself. Crafting contemporary porcelain and fine metal jewellery with a minimalist edge, one of the beauties of their timeless pieces is that they can be worn by people of all ages. MIDAS TOUCH Armed with a passion for the bespoke, the beautiful and the unusual, award-winning artist goldsmith Isabella Day’s creations are head-turning in every sense, from the fine craftsmanship to the exquisite design and creative personal flourishes. Together with master goldsmith Ford Hallam, Isabella has just opened The Remarkable Goldsmiths in Dartmouth, a shop where couples can discuss bespoke commissions as well as feasting their eyes on a captivating collection of wedding rings, engagement rings and jewellery ranging from dazzlingly distinctive bangles and earrings to striking pendants. Each piece is handcrafted using traditional goldsmithing skills and the goldsmiths even make all their own gold alloys from scratch. “This means taking fine gold direct from the dealers, mixing it with other metals such as silver and palladium and melting them together to alloy them to our own special recipes which have been refined and adjusted over the years,” explains Isabella. Hand forged to give the metal strength, the gold ingots are then crafted into a stunning piece to last a lifetime. “We even make really unusual and beautiful colours such as peach gold, green gold and grey gold!” she says. With remodelling being a speciality, Isabella loves to rework heirloom jewels into a carefully designed contemporary piece. “We can turn your dusty drawers full of treasure into really beautiful pieces that reflect your personality and style,” she says. Bespoke commissions are a particular passion for Isabella and Ford; the goldsmiths relish the process of finding out about you to create a unique piece reflective of your love story. Whether it’s an engraving of a special coastline, an inscription, a star map of the night of your engagement or kaleidoscopic birthstones woven amidst a wave design, you’re promised a unique and beautifully personal piece of jewellery to cherish forever. isabelladay.co.uk

THE ZERO-DRAMA GUIDE TO BRIDESMAIDS

the lead-up and on your wedding day. You will create such special memories together, whether it’s their first time in the role or not. “I’ve been a bridesmaid nine times, and each wedding has been so special to me. My relationship with each bride or groom is entirely unique, and means an awful lot to me, so there’s never a sense of ‘here we go again’ or any fatigue about being a bridesmaid,” says Daisy. “It’s genuinely the loveliest honour, and such a privilege to be asked. Plus, it means I’m pretty good at organising hen dos now!” So, what’s a good number of bridesmaids to have? “There is no specific rule about how many you should have. You could have one, or a whole handful,” says Jessica. “Just be mindful that having more bridesmaids could be costly if you are paying for their dresses, hair and make-up. Also, it helps to try to balance out the wedding party, so give some consideration to how many your partner is having.” Once you’ve made your decision, you have the lovely task of ‘popping the question’ to your bridesmaids. “This could be something personal to you and your friend. It might be inviting them to a lovely afternoon tea or you could surprise them with a curated giftbox with their favourite things as you pop the question,” says Jessica. “Wherever possible, I always recommend asking them in person, as it’s such an important role

and a big question to ask.” Remember they may have questions to ask or things to talk through rather than just a big excited ‘yes!’ so planning some time together means this can happen more naturally. Once you have your squad locked in, think about setting up a bridesmaid WhatsApp group so everyone can get excited together and send tips and suggestions.

TROUBLE IN PARADISE We won’t pretend it will always be sunshine and rainbows (although often it will be!), so it’s best to be prepared for some of the issues we’ve seen crop up when it comes to bridesmaids, from financial and practical to emotional. “Often bridesmaids’ dresses can be a contentious issue. It really helps to explain your decision-making process, so that they feel involved, and understand any budgetary constraints or particular colour choices,” says Jessica. “You might have a particular style of dress in mind, but it won’t look the same on every one of them, as they will likely have different body shapes.” Luckily, the days of bridesmaids all wearing the same ill-fitting shiny number have long gone and there are so many options – from mismatched to tailor-made – to ensure your squad all feel comfortable and confident walking down the aisle. Decide in advance whether you will or will not be paying for your bridesmaids’ dresses, or whether you’ll make a contribution, which can be a good middle ground. “I let my three bridesmaids know I had budgeted £100 for each of their dresses, and that if they found something they loved over that amount, they’d need to cover that cost,” says Poppy. “They all wore different

59

feature | THE ZERO-DRAMA GUIDE TO BRIDESMAIDS

dresses (in the same shade), and one came to £150. She paid the extra £50, which she was happy to do as she loved the dress and had known about the cost beforehand.” Being upfront about finances usually avoids any awkwardness down the line. You’ll also need to minimise the potential for disagreements between your bridesmaids. “If your bridal party aren’t already friends, hold an informal gathering ahead of the wedding to help break the ice between everyone, and reinforce the team feeling, so everyone pulls together on the day,” suggests Jessica. “Teamwork is essential to make sure everything runs smoothly, so those fun, informal gatherings beforehand really will help to bond everyone together for the big day.”

TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK “Spread the roles out evenly, so everyone feels equally involved,” advises Jessica. This also means that one person won’t be overloaded, and they can all help and back each other up with duties, decisionmaking, and getting a spread of opinions. If there’s a chance your bridal party might disagree, have a nominated ‘voice of reason’ for them to go to, so they’re not all turning to you if they need a rant! This is even more important if you’re asking them to plan your hen do and not giving too much guidance on what you’d like to do. “Sometimes, one bridesmaid who knows the bride from childhood has one very specific idea, but another bridesmaid, who perhaps has known her through her wild partying days, has another,” says Daisy. Lyra & Moth

“Sharing out the roles and responsibilities means it doesn’t all fall to one person, which can not only start to feel like a burden, but also runs the risk of it being a very one-sided hen do, instead of something with broader appeal.”

SPREAD THE JOY As the bride, you love and appreciate your bridesmaids, and will want to make the whole experience a positive one for them, so Jessica has some ideas to help make them feel special. “Ensure the bridal party are looked after on the morning of the wedding. You will likely be busy with hair and make-up so ensure some pastries or light bites are organised in advance, along with coffee and refreshments so you avoid anyone getting hangry!” she says. “Make sure you’ve prepared a getting-ready playlist and, of course, a bottle of bubbly to really set

What sort of duties can you ask or expect of your bridesmaids? Every bride will be different, and you’ll have your own approach in how you would like to be supported, so have a clear conversation concerning how you would like your bridesmaids to assist you throughout the day. Some of the main duties, both before the wedding and on the day itself, are listed below but, as always, communication is key to ensure everyone understands the expectations.

a great atmosphere.”

Think about gifting your bridesmaids something special on the day

• Organise hen do

too. “It might be hair and make-up services, or a beautiful bracelet to bond you all with this lovely moment,” suggests Jessica. It doesn’t have to be something expensive – a thoughtfully written handmade card can be just as special to let your bridesmaids know what they mean to you.

ALL IN THIS TOGETHER Finally, heed Jessica’s advice. “Remember that as a bride, your life may be revolving around your wedding, but your bridesmaids may lead very busy lives so be mindful of that when asking for help or allocating tasks.” They will be delighted to be involved but it’s

• Provide calm, unwavering support to the bride • Shop for bridesmaids’ dresses • Help make decisions in terms of wedding dress and key wedding suppliers • Help with preparations in the days leading up to the wedding • Attend any rehearsals or appointments

On the day • Be the on-the-day contact so the bride isn’t receiving phone calls or questions • Ensure bride eats breakfast • Hold a copy of the day plan • Keep bride topped up with water (not just champagne!) • Help bride get in and out of the dress or change into an evening outfit

• Ensure bride has an emergency supplies kit stored somewhere in the venue

• Hold flowers during ceremony

Daisy. “From being asked to having a role in the planning and on the day itself, each wedding I’ve been to as part of the bridal party will be with me forever. My tip for other bridesmaids is to remember that it’s the bride’s day, and that you love them and want the best for them! There might well be stressful elements, things you would do differently, and moments of pressure or anxiety, but at the end of the day, just smile, be there for your friend and soak up the experience.”

ESTATE OF GRACE

Ugbrooke House sits amidst acres of idyllic parkland in a south Devon valley, where tranquil lakes nestle Capability Brown landscaped gardens. The house is the epitome of elegance with a history dating back over 900 years. From its sweeping driveway to its opulent interiors, it makes a timeless canvas for a romantic country house wedding. This air of romance was the starting point for this styled shoot where whimsy meets sophistication. “The vision was to create a wildly romantic country wedding whilst still retaining an air of stately elegance and luxury,” explains Jen Shoubridge of Jennifer Jane Photography who coordinated and photographed the shoot. “Inspired by the beautiful soft tones of the brickwork of the house, we used a soft palette of cream, white, pale pink and peach.” Gorgeous petals in this soft medley of colours adorn the steps of the garden pavilion where vows can be taken overlooking the lake. “The abundant wild blooms bring romance and whimsy to the elegant and chic vision,” says Jen. They also bring delicate beauty to the tabletops where blooms spill from vintage metallic urns and glass vases. White pearl beaded plates, gold cutlery and crystal glassware add a luxurious touch, reflecting the opulence of the setting. Accents of gold foil catch the light on the pale pink macaron wedding favours, while a gorgeously styled selection of further sweet delights – coconut ice squares, iced biscuits and marshmallows – complement the tiered cake: a sleek vision of white ruffles edged with gold foil. With its sequined illusion bodice and puddle train, the bridal gown strikes a classic yet contemporary chord. Together with gold accessories, a cathedrallength embroidered veil and, of course, her dashing groom in a sharp tuxedo, she looks every inch the heroine of a modern country house romance.

RHAPSODY IN BLUE

A Chinese rice bowl was the starting point for this striking styled shoot at Eversfield Lodge, a new wedding venue hugged by wooded valleys and rolling hills in the heart of Devon’s countryside. “The owner of the venue, Li, has Chinese heritage, and I really wanted to nod to this with a theme based around one of my vintage Chinese rice bowls,” explains Phoebe Stanaway of Elisabeth Shell Events, who styled the shoot. “I was born in Hong Kong and so have plenty of this china floating about the place, and a beautiful ceramic elephant plant stand that has travelled the world with me. The entire concept was put to our amazing suppliers for them to run with whatever they picked up on in the bowl’s features.” “The beautiful blue and white bowls have a geometric pattern, a floral leaf motif and usually a dragon or interesting scene depicted in swirling blue at the bottom,” continues Phoebe. “They have a delicacy to them and also a strength – they are everyday objects which have been designed to be beautiful.” Set up in the charming courtyard flanked by converted stone barns, the minimalist tablescape carries the palette and delicate charm through tulle draping, smoky grey glassware and petrol blue vases topped with oak chopsticks and rice bowls layered over gold-rimmed porcelain plates. A handcrafted chandelier and hanging flower installation in shades of cream and blue frame the focal point of the intimate celebrations, while the exquisitely hand-painted bird and florals of the cake beautifully echo the fine design of the bowl. The finer details also nod to its intricate beauty, from the stationery gilded with gold leaf and sapphire engagement ring to the ceramic floral headpieces and earrings which crown the whimsical dresses, embellished with bohemian lace and dainty blooms.

it’s all about you A perfectly personal wedding is every couple’s dream, but how do you sidestep tradition and expectations to bring the ‘you’ to your day? Here’s how to be bold and choose the wedding that will make you both happy words Hannah May

IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU

The term ‘do you’ – and the sentiment behind it – underpins everything that wedding world is unashamedly all about. Rather than adhering to conventions or being a stickler for tradition, couples are increasingly moving away from expectations toward achieving their aspirations in an entirely personalised way. Bold choices and a strong sense of individualism are being woven into the planning process as couples ask themselves who they are and what they really want, to make their vision a personalitypacked reality that will induce a smile long after the final thank you note has been dispatched. For what good is a day of love if you’re later feeling remorse at having not freely celebrated your Toby Lowe Photography

day, your way? Small adaptations and additions are an easy way to treat your guests, pacify your parents (if needs be) and please yourselves, while grander gestures work wonders in ensuring a wedding as unique and true-to-form as it is unforgettable for both you and your guests. After all, when will you ever have another opportunity to stage a celebration that is by its very definition all about you, while being surrounded by the people you hold dearest in the world? Here are some ideas for starters...

Pick what you love The way you style your day and its individual components need not fit a specific mould or recognisable theme. Is there a specific book, film, decade, hobby, country or colour you adore? Use this (or a combination) as the creative starting point and look at how it can filter into each element. For example, if you’re a fan of the ’50s, you might want to don a rockabilly tea-length gown paired with a leather jacket, choose an American diner-style menu or kick-start the party with a dance routine or some floor-fillers from the musical Grease. Meanwhile, Jane Austen or Bridgerton

Matt Austin Images

fans might opt for a garden party with high tea, string quartet, and vintage empire-cut gowns. Or you could just pick your favourite everything and design the best mash-up of a day possible, be it a supper of fish and chips, tower of macarons, Beatles cover band, singing waiters, live art or surprise circus performance. Tie them together through the décor, colour scheme or a single motif, or embrace the quirky differences in your eclectic choices.

Stand on ceremony There’s no ‘right’ way to actually get married. The type of ceremony you choose will depend on your belief system and whether you wish to legally tie the knot; otherwise, it’s however you want to wed. Some couples prefer to do the formal proceedings ahead of W-day, leaving them free to host a celebrant-led ceremony in the woods or pagan handfasting on the beach. You might have your heart set on a traditional church or other religious ceremony, or an elopement wedding with just a pair of witnesses. The venue, itinerary and type of wedding are all your choice as a couple, whether you envision a sunset ceremony under a tree, a private civil partnership, or a spiritual day of rituals led by a handpicked officiant. There is a plethora of ways to write your own rulebook and personalise your wedding, from waking up and preparing for the day together to staging a first look, scattering the choir amongst Josh Harkon Photography

the congregation, and selecting someone special to walk you down the aisle. Bridal speeches, readings from children, dog ring bearers, and post-ceremony activities such as surfing can provide personal highlights for you and your guests. Have some fun in finding new and reimagined ways to incorporate and honour the people, places and things that you love.

93

feature | IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU Arianna Fenton Photography

A matter of taste The menu provides the perfect way to infuse extra flavour, character and meaning into your wedding. The easiest and most sure-fire way to achieve this is simply by picking your favourite dishes and drinks. If you can’t stand bubbly, then don’t proffer it to your guests. Toast with a signature cocktail, shot of tequila or vodka jelly – whatever tipple you fancy most. So long as your bar is stocked with a bit of variety, guests will be able to find a drink they like. For the food, weave your personal preferences into a crowd-pleasing menu or present your guests with a culinary journey of your love affair, starting with the tapas you ate in Spain just after you became engaged followed by a main course of the curry you devoured while travelling around India before finishing with the croquembouche you couldn’t get enough of at your best friend’s wedding. Not keen on a sit-down three-course dinner? Consider mixing up the format, presentation and flavours with food vans, street food, sharing platters, al fresco banquets, tasting menus, drinks stations, a mixologist, or a buffet crammed with fresh local foodstuffs that looks, tastes and smells sensational.

Thomas Frost Photography

Dress to impress The dress code for the couple, bridal party, groomsmen and guests can be customised to match your vision, from the timeless elegance of black tie and cocktail gowns to eye-catching brights, florals or even themed attire. You can use the wedding dress as the primary focal point from which to build the day’s overarching design – a bohemian botanical lace frock for a woodland, world-inspired wedding, perhaps, or a jumpsuit that oozes modern minimalist style – or let the leading man steal the sartorial spotlight with tailoring that sets the entire tone. The key is to use your own fashion personalities as cue to ensure that you still look like you – albeit a glammed-up, wedified version of you. Nothing is more timeless and tasteful than being yourself.

Role play There’s absolutely no done thing when it comes to selecting the bridal party, groomsmen and guest list – and the tasks you assign to them. Both brides and grooms can have a maid of honour or best man in addition to a bevy of bridesmaids and flower girls – or none at all. And there’s no need to reciprocate roles either. You might have been her maid back then, but if your friendship has changed and there’s someone else you’d prefer, then don’t hesitate in Enchanted Brides Photography

sticking to your gut. For more help with choosing your bridesmaids, see p.58 for our guide to bridal party bliss. Also, don’t feel the need to invite distant relatives you haven’t seen for a decade or plus-ones you’ve never met – especially if you’re planning a small or intimate wedding. Chances are, they’ll feel as awkward being there as you are having them there, so save everyone the unnecessary bother and don’t fret over it.

All that matters Remember to pour your energy into what matters to you the most. If you’re a foodie, focus on the menu. Are you musically minded? Design a soundtrack to suit, from the aisle walks and choir performance to the drinks reception, wedding breakfast and evening party, blending band sets with special playlists and live performances from friends and family to reflect each stage and emotion of your day. Don’t care much for cake? Ditch it, or have a doughnut wall, champagne fountain or ice cream trike instead. From those first months of planning to the day itself, you’ll no doubt need the opinions of a few trusted confidantes when things get too much or you lose direction, but otherwise don’t be too heavily swayed by the opinions of others. Come wedding day, your future self will heartily thank you.

10 TIPS FOR A SUSTAINABLE WEDDING

We know that green is the new black, with more and more couples choosing to plan a thoughtful, ethical and environmentally sound wedding. And, as this advice from the experts reveals, your dream day can be every bit as stylish as it is sustainable.

Push the envelope “Sending save the dates by email is a cheap and ecologically sound way of getting your date out there. You can do this with invitations too, but if you do want to send a postal invitation, then ensure the materials used are recycled and recyclable and avoid any additional adornments, which won’t be processed in a recycling plant,” advises wedding planner Rebecca Green of Rebel + Anchor (rebelandanchor.co.uk) “There are also some awesome plantable, seeded invites, which guests can then plant in soil to grow into wildflowers or herbs.”

Location, location, location If possible, keep travel down to a minimum by having the ceremony and reception in the same location. “If they’re not in the same place but are walking distance apart, don’t rely on coaches or minibuses,” says Rebecca. “This will also add a really fun element to the day, especially if you have the ushers and bridesmaids lead the way holding ‘This way to the party’ signs, or musicians playing along the route.”

Confetti time We all want that confetti moment, and there’s no reason not to, as long as you think ahead. “Biodegradable confetti is generally all that most venues will now accept and there are some lovely ones. You could create your own, of course, if you have the time and the patience,” suggests Rebecca. Grab a hole punch and make your own confetti using dried flowers and old book pages, suggest Surfers Against Sewage (sas.org.uk) or choose an alternative idea that will create just as much buzz. “People are often surprised to know that lots of confetti has plastic components. Go traditional with rice or get a bubble machine in (not single-use plastic bottles of bubbles!)” suggests Rachel Yates, chair of Plastic Free Penzance (plasticfreepz.co.uk).

Flower power “Always work with a florist who doesn’t use floral foam and ideally only uses locally grown organic flowers, where possible,” says Rebecca. We’re lucky down here in the south-west that so many florists have access to locally grown flowers. “Also, ask that flowers are not wrapped in plastic – preferably hessian or delivered to you in glass.” You can find an array of beautiful different ribbons in charity shops or, if you want to buy new, use naturally dyed ribbons. After the wedding, consider rehoming your floral bouquets or centrepieces to local nursing homes or cafés, so they are not left to waste and can be appreciated by others.

To-die-for décor “If you’re creating your own tablescapes, ask friends and family if they have any foliage that can be used as central runners, or use plants and ceramic pots to create that al fresco style dining effect,” suggests Rebecca. “I also love used candles as an alternative to artificial lights. As a stylist and planner, I always have lots of leftover candles and they always look amazing. Ask around; it’s such a waste when candles are just thrown away, and used candles can create that beautiful rustic feel,” she says, an idea that Rachel agrees with. “Light up your tables with handmade candles in old glass jars from home or charity shops, cutting back on plastic table decorations. In fact, when it comes to table decorations such as glitter, table confetti, place markers and ribbons think about ways you can use natural materials,” says Rachel.

Do us a favour The options are endless when it comes to favours for your guests, and we love locally made gifts that put a personal stamp on your proceedings. “Some simple but lovely eco-friendly favours include either packets of seeds or, better yet, pre-planted seedlings or plants in beautiful ceramic pots,” suggests Rebecca. And don’t be tempted to package your favours in plastic or cellophane gift bags. “Make your gift bags more personal and sustainable by handmaking them. Give them a vintage style, by swapping the plastic bags for paper and include thrift shops treats,” recommends Surfers Against Sewage.

101

feature | 10 TIPS FOR A SUSTAINABLE WEDDING

Presents of mind And talking of gifts, if people are travelling a long way to your wedding, offset your carbon footprint by requesting guests, as a wedding gift, go onto https://co2.myclimate.org and calculate the carbon cost of their flight and compensate with funding climate projects. Alternatively, you can ask for donations to an eco charity of your choice.

Food glorious food Always source local, seasonal, organic produce or work with caterers that have that ethos. You could even keep your menu meat-free or plantbased. “There are some incredible vegan caterers out there, and the food is so delicious even your meat-eating guests won’t complain, promise!” says Rebecca. Of course, as well as sourcing locally, it’s important to make sure all the food and drink at your wedding

is as free of plastic packaging as possible, too, and avoid single-use plates and cutlery especially for evening food. “Use wooden cutlery instead of

Maarten wore a suit he’s had for seven years, and

my skirt and jacket I had put away for our wedding for a few years too. When I worked in fashion I was often paid in clothes, and as soon as I saw it I knew it would be my wedding outfit, so I took it as payment and it’s been in a box under our bed waiting for its big moment ever since! I needed to finish my outfit off with a few accessories, so I contacted local maker Lucie Cast for my bag and purchased my sandals from Small-Folk, a children’s and lifestyle store on Totnes High Street. Our wedding flowers were grown by some of our neighbours on their allotment at Bowden Springs Farm, and our vegan cake was made by legendary local baker Lisa of Boho Cakes. Finally, the real stroke of genius was our wedding registry. We approached Me and East – a store selling a beautifully curated selection of locally made crafts – and Chloe very kindly helped us to put together a wish list. This was such a wonderful thing as not only did it mean that our wedding gifts were all unique and beautiful, but the very act of people buying them supported the makers as well as Chloe and her growing family. By the time I looked at our wedding as a whole, I realised that the entire act of our getting married became a process in investing in the community where we live. Think about the people who you want to witness your commitment – don’t feel that you are obliged to invite people to boost the numbers or pacify relatives. Your wedding is a pivotal moment in your life and the people who share it with you should be the people you will turn to in times of joy and sorrow. If you keep things local, you will be reducing the impact of your wedding in many ways, and by being clear about what matters to you environmentally, you’ll find a way to weave that in to your day. Maybe it’s paperless invitations, maybe it’s local seasonal food, maybe you encourage your guests to re-wear something rather than shop for a new outfit. Most of all – have fun with it! It’s supposed to be the happiest day of your life after all. For us, it was pure magic!”

COUNTRY HOUSES & CASTLES Live out your very own fairytale in one of Devon’s elegant country houses or majestic castles

Pynes House Believed to be the inspiration for Jane Austen’s Barton Park in ‘Sense and Sensibility’, this elegant Georgian house provides the most breathtaking location for your very own love story. Set within 37 acres of parkland in the Exe Valley, the glorious gardens hint at the immaculate interiors, where you can marry in a choice of state rooms, all bathed in natural light and exquisitely styled. For dizzying romance, take your vows before the grand doors on the entrance steps with the majestic tree-lined avenue and gardens as your backdrop, before feasting and dancing the night away beneath the sparkling chandeliers of the Ballroom or, for larger affairs, in a marquee in the grounds. Romantic details such as the Romeo and Juliet-style balcony and the myrtle bush in the rose garden, which is believed to have grown from a clipping from Queen Victoria’s bridal bouquet, add to the dreaminess, while the beautiful bedrooms make for an incredibly special place to spend the night. pyneshouse.co.uk Total capacity: 96 for dining in the house, 130 for ceremony in the house Rebecca Goddard

Exeter Golf & Country Club The buzz of Exeter might be on the doorstep, but you wouldn’t know it at Exeter Golf & Country Club. A hidden pocket of country charm a stone’s throw from the city streets, the tranquil air and lush parkland of the venue exude a heady sense of romance. The crisp white Georgian manor house, Wear Park, stands at its heart – think huge floor-to-ceiling windows, sweeping staircases and sumptuous furnishings. the lowdown on prewedding anxiety 120

#50 2022

Planning a wedding can seem overwhelming if you suffer from anxiety. Thanks to the insights of a bride-to-be and an expert from Anxiety UK, we look at how to deal with the triggers and pressures of the planning period words Hannah May

www.wedmagazine.co.uk

THE LOWDOWN ON PRE-WEDDING ANXIETY

anxiety (noun) WORRY ‘an uncomfortable feeling of nervousness or worry about something that is happening or might happen in the future’ If the dictionary definition of anxiety strikes a chord, then you’re not alone. Whether you already had an anxiety disorder before you became engaged, or developed one through the pressure imposed during the planning period, then you are amongst an increasing number of people experiencing a bout of pre- (and even post) wedding anxiety. We talk to one bride about her personal journey and glean some expert advice on how to help ease your anxiety as you approach the aisle...

Too many questions

“Anxiety, on the other hand, is more persistent and can disrupt day-to-day life. With anxiety there may not be one specific cause of worry, you can find yourself worrying about little things all of the time. If the anxiety you experience starts to get out of proportion and you end up feeling more anxious than you would expect someone else to be in your circumstances – this may be a sign of an anxiety condition.” Dave’s distinction between stress and anxiety is an important one. While one tends to occur in short bursts on a temporary basis, the other can appear as a constant threat: a looming fretfulness that increases in force until, quite often, it can cause total overwhelm and even an inability to think and function properly. Weddings can heighten anxiety in new and unpredictable ways, as Laura experienced from the outset. “The sheer

media platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest can add to this pressure,” he adds of the multiple stressors involved.

Planning pressures “It’s likely you will have experienced stress at some point in life already, whether it be from your job, education or other responsibilities,” says Dave Smithson from Anxiety UK (anxietyuk.org.uk). “Some people are more prone to stress and may find seemingly simple tasks a challenging experience. The difference between stress and anxiety is that stress can often be linked to a specific cause and is usually temporary or can be relieved by action. For example, if you are stressed about a deadline, once you have finished the project and the deadline has passed you will no longer feel stressed.”

An inability to switch off can rapidly ensue, leaving you struck with a negativity that not only affects your ability to act, but can also impair your relationships as a result. One solution is that rather than persistently second-guessing your decisions, ask yourself some pertinent questions that relate to your values and goals as individuals and a couple. The trick is to avoid becoming swept up by the stress and outward appearances of things by keeping sight of reality, of who you are and what you want. “Not everything you see online is real,” reminds Dave. “Social media is deceiving. What you don’t see behind the

Talk...and breathe Your first response to any feelings of anxiety should be to acknowledge them. The next should be to relocate a sense of perspective, and then if and whenever you’re still struggling with your condition, communicate it to the people in your life that should know, and might be able to help. “Luckily I have a very good support network,” reveals Laura. “Not only Tristan but my sister and parents too. With their help I was able to stop, take a breath, and breakdown the issues that were bothering me,” explains Laura. “Talk about it,” urges Dave. “If you feel like you’re being buried under the weight of extra tasks or emotions, reach out to those around you. Talk to a friend about it, no matter how small or silly it may seem. They might be able to help you, or at least reassure you.” Vocalising your feelings is one of the most vital steps, and should be followed by taking action to abate your anxiety. For example, Laura discovered that a pragmatic approach to the planning helped her to exercise a degree of focus and control that she was comfortable with, allowing her to tease out any issues and problems in a more bite-sized way. “I do love a list!” she announces. “Getting everything down on paper really helps me process information and come up with a plan. I got a diary and wrote a ‘to do’ list for each month. I knew time is of the essence with suppliers being booked up so far in advance and I just couldn’t cope with doing everything at once.”

“Breathe,” says Dave of one of the most effective tools for eliciting a sense of calm and connection. “This breathing technique works with the parasympathetic nervous system to bring calm to both the mind and body. Breathe in for four, hold for two, breathe out for six. Be sure that the out breath is much longer than the in breath. This cycle should be repeated at least six times.” A mantra put simply by spiritual master Amit Ray and one well worth remembering: “If you want to conquer the anxiety of life, live in the moment, live in the breath.”

Her next tip is one that many brides fail to see the value of often until it’s too late: delegation. “I asked Tristan to be in charge of the honeymoon. We discussed possible locations but I left it up to him. My sister is maid of honour so I have left hen do decisions in her capable hands, my mum is on the case with flowers and decorations, and

LAURA AND EARL by kathrynclarkemcleod.com

Sunshine of my Life After a year’s delay, Laura and Earl’s wedding reunited friends and family in the idyllic setting of Upton Barn & Walled Garden Having met at work in 2004, Laura and Earl took their first trip as a couple to Edinburgh and always vowed to return. After going their separate ways, the pair rekindled their relationship in 2016. “In November 2018, Earl booked us a surprise weekend away,” reveals Laura. “I was delighted to find out we were finally going back to Edinburgh!” “We pulled up to the same cottage we stayed in 13 years earlier,” she continues. “As I opened the door, candles lit the room and I noticed pictures of Earl and I throughout the years and a bottle of champagne. As I turned to look at Earl, he was on one knee. It was perfect.” Although based in the West Midlands, the couple decided they would wed in Devon. “Earl has some wonderful family memories from when he was a child there and over the past few years we have shared some fantastic times as a couple in south Devon,” explains Laura. It was love at first sight when they set eyes upon Upton Barn & Walled Garden. “We knew it was the perfect place for us: the beautiful backdrop of the Devonshire countryside, the elegant stable barn and modern open-plan feel was exactly what we were looking for,” she says. Drawing inspiration from the rural setting, the couple opted for a palette of white, ivory, light dusky pinks and green foliage. “The beautiful walled garden brought so much colour that we wanted our scheme to only amplify the stunning surroundings,” says Laura. “We extended this to the table plan, where we named each table after a flower that could be found in it.” After vows in the sun-drenched garden, everyone enjoyed a drinks reception and sumptuous feast featuring locally smoked salmon, pan-fried gnocchi with wild mushrooms, seared rump steak and a trio of desserts. Guests spent the warm summer’s evening throwing shapes on the dance floor, mingling in the gardens and tucking into pizza around the firepit. “Like many other couples, our wedding was postponed by a year,” says Laura. “At the time this news was deflating, but it turned out that it made our day more special. It arrived two days after the lockdown restrictions were lifted, so we truly appreciated having our friends and family with us to celebrate.” Laura shares a plethora of highlights from their day. “Everyone on their feet dancing, kids playing football on the lawn, the blazing sun, the beautiful words and memories of loved ones lost, families meeting, seeing everyone’s faces together in one room after a year apart...” she smiles. “There were so many things we couldn’t control leading up to our wedding,” she reflects. “The lesson we learned was that things may not be perfect, but the main thing was we were finally going to be married – and we didn’t lose focus on this.”

TAMSIN AND AIDAN by melaniebarnfieldphotography.com

Everlasting Love Tamsin and Aidan’s postponed wedding was a rustic-luxe affair combining the best of Devon’s food and landscape Having met at school, it wasn’t until a few years later that Tamsin and Aidan fell for each other. Fast forward to 2019, and the couple were on holiday in Bali having dinner at a private temple. “After we’d eaten, Aidan asked me if he could take a picture of the back of my dress,” says Tamsin. “When I turned around, he was down on one knee and asking me to marry him. It was such a magical moment and we were lucky enough to capture the whole thing on video.” Choosing the enchanting rural venue of Wonwood Barton for their wedding, the couple embraced a rustic theme to suit, with “lots of wood, greens, whites and candles”. “Our dream was to get married outside,” says Tamsin. “I stayed at the venue the night before with my mum and my bridesmaids, and on the morning of the wedding when we were all getting ready, the weather was not looking good. It was only at the very last minute we decided to risk it and set the chairs out on the lawn, hoping no more rain was coming. We were so lucky that just as everyone was arriving the sun began to shine!” The poignant ceremony that followed was made even more special as they’d had to rearrange their big day. “Our favourite moment was finally getting to become husband and wife in front of our closest family and friends after having to postpone our wedding due to Covid,” remembers Tamsin. “It really was the most perfect day we could have wished for.” Guests enjoyed canapés and drinks alongside views of Devon’s rolling hills before settling into the marquee for the delicious wedding breakfast. Sharing platters of breads, oils, meats and cheeses were followed by a roast beef joint with vegetables, potatoes and gravy, and a mini trio of desserts. “Each table had a ‘designated carver’ to cut the beef, which was a really fun way of doing things,” says Tamsin. The speeches and lawn games provided further entertainment alongside a soundtrack from “amazing live singer” Lizzie Corish. And, as the day turned to evening, the festivities continued with the first dance and sparklers galore, before the couple and their loved ones danced the night away. Reflecting on her top tip for couples in the throes of wedding planning, Tamsin has some sage advice. “Enjoy the planning,” she says. “Although it may seem stressful at the time, once your big day is over, you might actually miss it!”

KATE AND TAYLER by venetianorrington.com

Sunny Delights Kate and Tayler’s moorland wedding was full of colour, joy and sunshine Kate and Tayler first met at university. “I was a young fresh(wo)man living in halls, suffering no TV in the peak of ‘The X Factor’ years. Tayler lived with one of my best friends in a proper house with a TV, so naturally Saturday nights I took advantage of watching Simon Cowell at theirs. ‘The X Factor’ was just an excuse really!” she laughs. The couple’s engagement involved Tayler sending Kate on a treasure hunt before directing her to Jay’s Grave on Dartmoor, where she was greeted with a tor lit with candles. “The lit pathway led to a cave he had adorned with fairy lights, a roaring fire and music. We danced and he got down on one knee…” she reminisces of the achingly romantic proposal. Opting for a church ceremony followed by a reception at Gidleigh Village Hall, Kate and Tayler wanted to treat their guests to the happiest celebration possible. “We just wanted the brightest day after a couple of gloomy years amidst the pandemic. It was a colourful paradise!” says Kate. The carnival of colour carried from the bunting and glassware to the stationery and dried flowers, while a handmade butterfly photo booth and a showstopping cake provided brilliantly vibrant focal points. Readying herself for the aisle with her six bridesmaids, eight flower girls and all the mums, Kate donned her gown ahead of an “emotional first look with my dad and brothers – and then came out to a screaming party of my favourite women who made me feel on top of the world!” she smiles. The weather perfectly captured the cheery mood of the day (“bright sunshine and 30 degrees!”), while the ceremony provided the most aptly personal and upbeat celebration. “Our six-year-old nephews both read poems, one of our best friends played the cello during the signing of the register, and my godfather sang ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight?’ Magic,” recalls Kate. The whole village was waiting outside the church to congratulate the newly-weds who headed off in their yellow campervan ‘Sunny’ to the reception. There, guests enjoyed cocktails and garden games before tucking into beef brisket with garlic roast new potatoes, tenderstem broccoli with blue cheese and crispy onions, and a round of brownies. “The speeches blew us away and there were so many happy tears,” says Kate of an especially fond memory. “We got whisked up to Scorhill for photographs, then our first dance was to Becky Hill’s orchestral version of ‘I Could Get Used To This.’ All our guests joined us for the moment.” An evening of dancing, photos in the butterfly booth and drinking espresso martinis and limoncello carried them into the small hours. “Take your time and don’t rush decisions,” says Kate by word of advice. “This is such an important and meaningful day – you want every moment to reflect who you are and celebrate your love. Make sure that happens.”

TARA AND KELVIN by hannah-wilde.com

Heart of Winter Tara and Kelvin embraced the elements and natural details for their wildly romantic winter wedding on Dartmoor From a sunny day on the Isle of Skye to windswept Dartmoor in the depths of winter, Tara and Kelvin’s love story has been played out amongst some epic landscapes. “The proposal was a complete surprise while on a road trip around Scotland,” explains Tara. “Kelvin got down on one knee on a beautiful coral beach on the Isle of Skye.” Deciding they wanted “a very natural and simple wedding,” the couple knew they’d found the perfect setting in Badgers Holt, an intimate venue on Dartmoor. “We love the outdoors and wanted to reflect that in our special day. Dartmoor and Badgers Holt suited this perfectly with their relaxed approach to weddings,” says Tara. Sustainability was a key consideration for the couple. “We were conscious of the environmental impact and tried to reduce waste where possible,” she says. “So we reused table decorations provided by the venue and reduced excessive waste by keeping the save the dates and invitations electronic. We kept decorations very minimal – Badgers Holt is already very twinkly and with beautiful floristry little else was needed.” The wintery hues and natural aesthetic of the flowers perfectly complemented the couple’s relaxed wedding attire: Kelvin wore a country-style suit, while Tara donned a stunning bohemian lace gown. Framed by a foliage-filled arch, the ceremony provided the couple with their standout moments. For Kelvin it was “seeing Tara come down the aisle looking totally stunning” and, for Tara, it was “walking down the aisle to see Kelvin at the end and being surrounded by family”. “The ceremony was just the start of a whole day so filled with love,” she reflects. “After two years of Covid, being able to share our wedding with all our family and gathering at Christmas gave it an extra special feeling.” The couple exchanged wedding rings which were made by Tara’s uncle. “He also made my parents’ rings 38 years ago. This was very special to us,” she says. After the vows, everyone enjoyed hot mulled wine and a feast of duck, pork and vegetarian and vegan dishes. As darkness fell, the party moved outdoors for sparklers and drinks around the firepits before ceilidh band Banned from the Moor got everyone on the dance floor with their fun-filled, high energy music. “The whole day felt like a huge family wedding and Christmas party without having to worry about cooking a turkey and washing up. It was perfect,” reflects Tara, who has advice for engaged couples. “Add some homemade elements. We handmade place names and used pine cones to hold them up so they could all be recycled afterwards,” she says. “Keep it relaxed. Many of our guests said it was the best wedding they’d been to. And most importantly enjoy your day. Build in time to take it all in.”

CHARLEY AND THOMAS by novaweddingphotography.co.uk

The digital world brought Charley and Thomas together when they started following each other’s blogs as teenagers. “We had followed each other for a few years before I messaged Thomas for the first time. Fast forward a year and we had been speaking every day before going on our first date in August 2016,” reflects Charley. After a “perfect” proposal at home, the couple set out to find their dream intimate venue – and they soon fell for the charms of Brickhouse Vineyard. “It was the first venue we visited and we fell in love straight away,” says Charley. In keeping with the venue’s idyllic backdrop of leafy vines and meadows, they picked a palette of pale green and pink. “We really love plants so there was a lot of greenery on the day,” says Thomas. Their vision was brought to life beautifully by wedding stylist Nikki Sherriff of Knots & Kisses. “Nikki worked closely with our florist to make sure everything was cohesive and looked perfect on the day,” says Charley. “She also set up for us which was a massive weight off our shoulders.” The venue was dressed with a dreamy blend of pale petals in glass vases, modern stationery and simple sprigs of rosemary atop rattan plates, while a ceremony arch bedecked with delicate petals and foliage framed the vows. The newly-weds exited the ceremony to a shower of confetti and savoured cherished moments with their family and friends in the sun-kissed grounds. With the wedding taking place two days before Covid restrictions ended, they replaced the planned buffet with individually served buffet platters – these went down a treat, particularly the finale: a trio of puddings comprising raspberry frangipani tart, lemon posset with shortbread and Devon apple cake with caramel sauce and clotted cream. Restrictions meant plans for a DJ also had to be shelved, but guests were more than happy to mingle in the sunshine, playing board games and taking Polaroid pictures for the photo wall. “As our families and friends hadn’t been able to see each other for such a long time most people opted to sit and chat outside,” says Charley. What’s more, being forced to have their first dance outdoors provided Charley’s highlight of the day. “It was around golden hour and turning around to see all of our friends with their arms around each other swaying along was so lovely,” she reminisces. The ensuing moments stand out most in Thomas’s mind. “Just after our first dance we were whisked away for some golden hour photos,” he says. “We went to a nearby field and it was nice to escape and have some time together and reflect on the day.” “The atmosphere was so lovely and everyone said how much they enjoyed themselves,” says Charley of her dream summer wedding. “Regardless of how difficult Covid restrictions made planning, we’re so happy with how things turned out.” There’s just one thing the couple would change. “Have your ceremony earlier,” she advises, reflecting on their 2pm ceremony. “We said to each other so many times that time was going too quickly and wished we had more time to soak it all up.”

MOLLY AND WILL by noahwerth.co.uk

Summer Daze Molly and Will’s wedding at Rockbeare Manor presented guests with a memorable medley of music, games and gastronomy “I was working as an estate agent in Exeter when Will moved to the area. He was looking to purchase a home and popped into the office. A few emails back and forth, then a first coffee date...and the rest is history over six-and-a-half years ago,” says Molly of her and Will’s romantic beginnings. The couple were holidaying in New York when Will got down on one knee and popped the question during a cold morning walk in Central Park, much to Molly’s elation. Selecting the elegant setting of Rockbeare Manor for their summer wedding, Molly and Will chose neutral tones of white and champagne to adorn their day. “We wanted a summer feel in the ballroom so added some raspberry pink with the flowers and cakes,” says Molly. It was the ceremony at Broadclyst Church that proved to be “the most magical moment,” she reflects. “Walking into the church and seeing Will’s face was a moment I’ll never forget. Having everyone you love in one space is the most magical feeling and made the whole day so special.” The newly-weds were transported in a VW Beetle to Rockbeare where they were met by the sounds of live oompah band German Jukebox. “We had canapés on the lawn with the amazing brass instruments entertaining everybody,” says Molly. Guests feasted on platters of Devon rib of beef, roast chicken stuffed with mushrooms and sweet potato gnocchi in the ballroom. “We wanted a more casual option for dessert, so had afternoon tea dotted around the manor. It worked perfectly, enabling guess to get out of their chairs and venture round the amazing manor and grounds,” says Molly, who also commissioned cupcakes featuring pictures of their dog – “which made my day,” she says. “They added such a personal touch.” The rest of the evening was a relaxed affair featuring a photo booth, chocolate fountain, table tennis, “amazing” live band Mammoth and another round of food and drinks. “It ended with everyone on the dance floor and it really was the perfect end to a perfect day,” reminisces Molly. “The entertainment was always going to be our main focus – we wanted guests to enjoy the day and relax with friends,” she says. “Having a fun brass band in the day and a brilliant live band in the evening added so much fun – we just felt it brought everyone together.” “Prioritise,” Molly says by word of advice for other couples embarking on their planning journey. “Make sure you book the things that are most important to you first, then you have time to decide the other elements. Also, don’t get too stressed,” she adds. “No one notices the little details so don’t let those moments overshadow the fun parts of planning a wedding!”

Classic Classic Romance Romance Cristina and Rupert’s country house wedding was brimming with country gorgeous florals and Cristina and Rupert’s house wedding romantic was brimming withtouches gorgeous florals, delectable Devon flavours and dreamily touches Cristina and Rupert’s loveromantic story took them from a first encounter in Dubai to a beautiful country house wedding in Devon. “We were out with friends on a Thursday night in Dubai,” says Cristina. “Rupert and his friend approached us, and we spent the evening talking. We exchanged numbers and the rest is history.” Rupert’s proposal followed in September 2020 after a day exploring the beautiful sights of North Devon. “We ended up eating strawberries and drinking Prosecco on Saunton Sands beach, watching the sun set,” reminisces Cristina of their romantic engagement. A private Jacobean manor house on the edge of Lamerton, new wedding venue Hurlditch Court made the spectacular setting for their celebrations after a ceremony at nearby St Peter’s Church. “It is not only a beautiful venue but also great for their luxury shepherd’s huts and cottages that can accommodate the guests,” she says. “A marquee was set up in the garden.” Cristina’s bridal gown – a stunning design made in Moldova with layers of soft tulle and statement sleeves – evoked the day’s romantic aesthetic beautifully. The soft pink bridesmaids’ dresses harmonised with the bouquets of barely-there shades, while Rupert carried a classic look in a bespoke morning suit. Styled with a palette of white, sage green and blush pink, the marquee perfectly complemented the scenic setting. “We wanted something classic with a very slight country feel,” explains Cristina. Gorgeous hanging foliage and florals, together with candlelit tables adorned with arrangements of dainty blooms, made for a dreamily romantic scene. Such a showstopping setting demanded a special wedding breakfast – and renowned local chef John Hooker ensured the feast of locally sourced flavours was one to remember. Highlights included native lobster and scallop ravioli, spiced carrot purée and roasted lobster bisque; roasted rack of new season lamb, poached and roasted belly, baby broad beans, capers and mint; and lemon posset, Tamar Valley strawberries, honeycomb and sorrel. The culinary delights continued in the evening, with the likes of ham hock scotch eggs, British cheeses and Cornish sausage rolls with candied onion and walnut going down a treat. “Everything was absolutely delicious,” enthuses Cristina. Looking back on the day, Cristina recalls her standout moments. “The church ceremony was very memorable. I was feeling very emotional walking down the aisle alongside my dad as Rupert was waiting at the altar.” The speeches provided another highlight. “The groom’s and best men’s speeches were absolutely hilarious,” she reflects fondly. “We all had a good laugh.”
