WELCOME

a new dawn As I write, Covid restrictions are being relaxed across the country. We can enjoy the sweet pleasures of life once again, from being able to hug our families and visit our grandparents to meeting friends inside our favourite coffee shop. At last there is light, liberty and togethernesss on the horizon. And we’re hoping, with every fibre of our beings, that big, joy-filled weddings can take place again in the very near future. I, for one, cannot wait to hear all your wonderful wedding stories after the heartache of the past year. This issue, we’re celebrating this new hope. ‘Once Upon a Dream’ sets the uplifting mood; bathed in light, the enchanting styling and uber-glam bride and groom bring the romance of an Italian wedding to the heart of the English countryside. Nothing symbolises new hope quite like the bounty of spring – and ‘Love in Bloom’ is a glorious celebration of the season, a carnival of flowers creating a breathtaking scene against the charm-packed backdrop of Rock Farm. There’s more wow-worthy floral inspiration in ‘Flower Power’ and top tips on seasonality, symbolism and personalising your wedding blooms in ‘Garland Glossary.’ There’s newness galore at Devon’s bridal boutiques; in ‘Something New’, you’ll find contemporary clean lines through to boho vibes and dreamy, tulle-filled gowns, while ‘Working the Groom’ showcases the latest looks for the man of the moment. There’s many more contemporary and creative ideas to inspire your own dream day, from favours and ceremonies to gorgeous beachside shoots spanning the north coast to the south. We also celebrate the beauty of a modern white wedding, from high glamour laced with gold at a country estate to pared-back and relaxed in a Devon idyll. And, in ‘Got Wed’, you’ll find a sense of hope captured in the most heartwarming love stories. From Niamh and Conor’s ‘80s-tastic countryside bash to Elizabeth and Ian’s scaled down winter festivities in their local pub, the palpable joy of these crazy-in-love couples makes me feel full of hope for happy days ahead. VINEYARD ROMANCE A Grade II listed house in a picture-perfect setting, Brickhouse Vineyard in the south Devon hills had already stolen our hearts. Set amongst 20 acres of fields and woodland, including vines that produce around 3,000 bottles of wine each year, it’s a unique venue brimming with rural romance. Four years after the venue first opened its doors, major renovations to both the Round House and the Barn mean the wedding offering at Brickhouse Vineyard is even more impressive. Licensed for civil ceremonies, the beautifully restored Round

House is set on a landscaped terrace, providing a natural outdoor aisle through a wildflower meadow overlooking the vines. Couples may choose to follow the vows with a drinks reception on the terrace, taking in the sublime countryside views before moving onto the newly restored 18th century Daisy Wheel Barn. Combining traditional and modern architectural design, the space boasts a unique synthesis of rustic charm and stylish elegance. Flooded with natural light, features such as the open-vaulted oak beam roof and contemporary bar make it an ambient space for a

DEVON DELIGHTS Nestled on the fringes of Dartmoor in west Devon, Coombe Trenchard is a sanctuary of natural beauty and timeless elegance. Stirringly beautiful spaces can be found throughout the Arts and Crafts country house estate, from the restored Edwardian gardens and woodland to the house itself, flanked by the Coach House, Clock Tower and Italian Terrace – and now The Peacock Bar has added to its charms. Coombe Trenchard has long celebrated the bounty of its glorious grounds – with many couples styling their day with flowers from owner Sarah Marsh’s cutting garden – and The Peacock Bar is a natural extension of this approach. With impeccable attention to detail, Sarah has created a carefully curated collection of drinks from the highest quality south-west producers as well as a selection of wild cocktails and mocktails infused with homegrown fruits and botanicals from the venue’s meadows, orchards and hidden kitchen garden. Fine organic spirits include scented geranium vodka, elderflower liqueur, crab apple gin, and lavender limoncello. As pleasing to the eye as to the tastebuds, each drink is beautifully presented, served in eclectic antique glassware from the elegant house collection. Just imagine the euphoria of taking your vows and toasting your union with a stunning signature cocktail such as a Rose Tom Collins, Dartmoor Tini, Garden Party or Lavender & Lemon Gin Fizz. And there’s more. The newly launched ‘Coombe Trenchard House Collections’ are designed to offer further character and deliciousness to your day. From ‘The Luxury Dartmoor Ice Cream Bar’ and ‘Sweets & All The Treats Station’ to a ‘Hot Chocolate Bar’ and ‘Afternoon Tea Table’, you can look forward to delighting your guests with a veritable feast of delectable local flavours in this picturesque corner of Devon. coombetrenchard.co.uk

ONCE UPON A DREAM

A so-stylish palette, a breathtaking gown and luxe details – this styled shoot captures a modern destination wedding vibe in the extraordinarily beautiful climes of Forde Abbey. Nestling in the English countryside, the tablescape could be mistaken for a wedding in Italy or France. A palette of barely-there shades meets a whisper of romantic pink beneath a dreamy, cloud-like floral installation, while natural textures, from rattan to wood, echo the warm tones of the timeworn walls. The bride’s gorgeously embellished gown provides a wow factor to match the décor and glorious architecture of the setting, her pearly accessories nestling amidst softly waved hair and her crisp white bouquet the perfect pairing for the look. Her groom cuts a suave figure in a sharp dinner suit, enhancing the glamour factor of this truly enchanting wedding scene.

LOVE IN BLOOM

A celebration of spring and the glorious natural beauty of its east Devon locale, this styled shoot at intimate wedding venue Rock Farm is positively bursting with colour, creativity, and romance. A beguiling cluster of lovingly restored buildings, rambling gardens and green farmland, Rock Farm’s untouched feel adds to its charm, making the natural aesthetic of this shoot so fitting. Glorious medleys of ‘just gathered’ spring blooms line the outdoor aisle to the pergola, the rusting tin roof, wooden chairs, and abundant florals blending seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. Cradled by mature trees, an outdoor lounge makes a picture-perfect setting for a picnic where grazing platters brimming with local produce mirror the colours of the petals. Venturing indoors, the ancient cob walls and exposed beams of the granary make quite the canvas for a floral-fabulous feast where blooms spill from vases, line the tables and even float suspended from crystal glassware. The petal pretty extends to the cake – a gorgeous centrepiece with bold blooms cascading down its iced tiers. Donning a dream of a dress with heaps of tulle and botanical detailing, and a gown strewn with delicate leaf embellishment, the romantic bridal looks and muted shades of the grooms wear slot effortlessly into the natural and stirringly beautiful spring scene.

SOMETHING NEW

There’s simply no stopping bridal fashion. Continuing to find new and fabulous forms, the latest collections combine a sense of the time with innovation and beauty to jaw-dropping effect. Though the runways may still be virtual affairs, designers seem disaffected by the word ‘restriction’, instead exercising free reign over their imaginations to create fawn-worthy frocks more akin to works of art than anything else. From the stunning simplicity of a perfectly cut

minimalism The no-frills movement continues to dominate wedding world, where streamlined silhouettes and clean lines garner unfailingly chic impact. Think impeccably tailored separates (especially trousers) or fuss-free jumpsuits and pantsuits in the best quality fabrics for seductive, form-sculpting fashions that ooze timeless style; add a detachable skirt for extra versatility. Alternatively, a plain satin ballgown fuses old school glamour with modern romance and can be customised with a single embellishment such as a veil, belt or back bow. Slips and sheaths are key pieces of pared-back purity, as are classic A-lines updated with square necklines, cowl necks, open backs, or given a preppy vibe with collars. As well as the staples of silk and crepe, brides will be drawn to the luxe likes of mikado, organza, jacquard and taffeta for a modern, more sculptural twist on minimalism.

new romance As brides step out of Covid’s shadow and embrace the limelight, attention-grabbing silhouettes are making a comeback. From big shoulders and ruffles to puff everything – especially sleeves – volume is en vogue. Together with statement necks (pleated, deep-plunge and sweetheart) and backs (or hip-skimming backless numbers), an air of the theatrical is boosted by showstopping adornments such as maxi bows, plumage and all-over sparkle. Pair a frothy tulle or tiered skirt with a demure strapless bodice or high neck; pick a figure-skimming frock with a skirt split; or opt for over-the-top ruffles that fringe your gown from head-to-toe. Then there’s high vintage collars, oversized sleeves, and high-low hemlines – they’re all au courant features of this particularly headturning type of romantic drama.

Colour and pattern are the keynotes. Picture bold prints (graphic florals, fashion sketches, botanical art) and colour pop brights, or don your ‘something blue’ with one of the watercolours du jour. Meanwhile, pastels and blush tones remain a fashion-forward choice, while black wedding gowns are also returning to the runways for brides seeking something more daringly à la mode. Show some skin with a short skirt, sexy corsetry or risqué backless styles, or choose transparency and sheer fabrics for somewhere between cleverly covered up and exquisitely exposed. Mix textures and layer your look to lend even more interest to your ensemble. Other features to look out for include ornate embroidery, hand-stitched 3D florals and beadwork, elaborate drapery and dazzling metallics.

new boho Merging ethereal elements with modern prairie, the new boho is all about whimsy and romance, but with an individualised edge. From floral lace, transparency and vintage embroideries to cottagecore (such as loose-fitting dresses, head-to-toe cotton or linen and vintage patterns) for a pretty pastoral look, brides are adopting the look in a number of unique ways. Reimagined vintage wear sees 1950s tea-length skirts or 1920s gowns with drop waists, geometric designs and art deco accents paired with something romantic or ephemeral, such as off-the-shoulder styles and blouson (balloon, sheer and tulle) sleeves. Add some contemporary laser-cut lace, tassels, drawstrings, leaf motifs and tiered skirts for enhanced eclecticism. Extra kudos for brides weaving sustainability into their outfit via eco fabrics, pre-loved/heirloom pieces, or custom-made couture.

SET ADRIFT

Exchanging vows within touching distance of the ocean is the stuff of dreams and – thanks to the flexibility of celebrant-led ceremonies, which can take place in the remotest of locations – a wedding immersed in natural beauty is a beguiling option for the modern couple. In this styled shoot, Saunton Sands – a blissful stretch of over three miles of sand, sea and dunes in north Devon – sets the scene for a wedding where the elements take centre-stage. “This is designed for couples dreaming of a relaxed getaway wedding where they can elope and simply be together in a secret hideaway or have an intimate number of guests,” explains stylist Bridget Scott of Blue Fizz Events. “We used a naturally built driftwood shack as our couple’s retreat. It’s dressed with rugs, cushions and throws to give it a touch of comfortable luxury amidst the sand and sea breeze.” A driftwood ceremony arch bedecked with flowers frames the Atlantic rollers, making a sublime setting for the vows. “A palette of natural shades of grey green foliage, soft grasses and creamy blush blooms adds drama and impact to the look,” explains Bridget. “The bold florals bring structure with effortlessly beautiful combinations of textures and delicate elements.” A wooden pallet and woven seats make for a dream wedding feast on the sands, dressed with natural ceramics, linens and shells alongside a collection of eclectic bottles, flowers and foliage. The seating plan combines gold-edged slices of shell and handmade paper, while the cake is finished with gold dusting, gold leaf, together with flowers and foliage, to tie in with the aesthetic. “I used a driftwood log as the cake stand as I love adapting found objects that link in with our wild and natural landscape,” says Bridget. Designed to slip seamlessly into the setting, Bridget crafted the bride’s dress from organic stretch cotton and cotton lace to create a fluid look marrying textures and details such as the striking waterfall back. “I designed this dress to be worn in the elements and to allow my bride to relax in the sea and sand while still looking elegant and romantic,” she explains. From the bronzed glow and warm ombré shades on the eyes to the tumbling beach waves and intricate, locally crafted jewellery inspired by the sea, this shoot celebrates natural beauty down to the finest details.

SOUTHERN BELLES

From elevated clifftops and secluded coves to sweeping sandy beaches, places of incredible beauty can be found along the coastline of south Devon. Mount Folly Farm, which sits on the clifftops overlooking Bantham Beach and Bigburyon-Sea, with the enchanting sight of Burgh Island and its iconic sea tractor, makes a breathtaking location for this styled shoot. Modern boho vibes and whispers of Morocco abound in this distinctively Devon setting. Natural and locally sourced pieces are key in bringing the relaxed, romantic and achingly hip scene to life: think rattan and soft cushions, pampas grasses and vintage rugs, while an angular ceremony backdrop frames the ocean in dreamily contemporary style. Accessories are key to this standout look and a dried flower bouquet and crown combining neutral shades with bold red and burnt orange pop against the vintage lace dress and draped sheath design. A vintage hat and striking, ethical jewellery, together with soft boho hair, adds fashion-forward and coolly relaxed flair, perfect for a dream Devon wedding by the sea.

COUNTRY CHARM

6.

5.

7.

Country gents have never been so cool. Whether you’re tying the knot in a rustic barn, throwing a festival-style celebration in a field, or hosting a party in a country house, achieving the pastoral look is as easy as it is en vogue. Suits in earth tones (sage, chestnut, rust) and tweeds are a top contender, while patterns such as checks, herringbone and windowpane continue to captivate tailors. Sustainable is an additional element, so add something vintage, vegan or ethically sourced for extra kudos. Florals are another mainstay. or bow tie. Go statement with a single bold ’70s floral print spliced into a muted outfit, or lend a little interest with a botanical detail. Complete your ensemble with brogues, braces and a dried or wild flower boutonniere with a twine-wrapped pin – and voilà: ‘cottagecore’ has received a contemporary and very dapper makeover! 1. PASTEL PANACHE A go-to for spring and summer nuptials, pastel shades are an easy-onthe-eye, versatile and super-stylish choice. Sport a pale chalky shade via your entire suit, or select an item or two to effortlessly spruce up and individualise your grooms wear. Wedding world is currently crushing on pale lilac, powder blue, candy pink and mint green. Work them into your three-piece, buttonhole, tie, or don a pair of pastel-hued shoes for instant panache. 1. SMOOTH OPERATOR You can’t beat black tie for a smart sense of occasion. While designers continue to experiment with silhouettes, the classic slim-cut black suit/crisp white shirt/bow tie combination remains as debonair as ever. Having said that, you can adapt the look to, well… suit. Double-breasted is back with a vengeance, as is tightly tailored with clean lines or relaxed, wider-fit silhouettes. Then there’s the timelessly stylish tux. Modernise it with an all-white tuxedo coat paired with black trousers for country club chic, choose a velvet tux (in a shade of midnight blue or ruby), throw in some pinstripes or go minimal in monochrome. So long as it’s your take on a trend, it’ll be forever ‘you’. 1. The Grooms Room Plymouth the-wedding-company.co.uk 2. Torre torreformalwear.com 3. Charles Tyrwhitt ctshirts.com 4. THE BRIGHT STUFF

3.

Bold and daring are the leading colour keynotes as grooms step out of the shadows and into the limelight. Rock anything current, including metallics in gold and silver, brights (or what Pantone refers to as ‘Power Surge’) – such as shocking red, electric blue, zesty lime and tangerine orange – or even acid tones of neon pink and lemon yellow. Colour blocking, bright striped or printed blazers create extra edge, or you might prefer to incorporate some striking shades into the minutiae. Either way, pick a palette that’s as uniquely reflective of your personality as it is of 4.

EASY BREEZY Men’s fashion is enjoying a maritime moment. Shades of blue are both breezy and traditional, moving from baby tones towards the darker side of midnight. Think woven suits in dark or navy blue with white accents, or a sharp bright blue three-piece, sweetened with a blush tie. For a more casual beach-inspired look go for sand coloured chinos or a neutral or caramel linen suit, while Hawaiian prints and accessories evoke more playful and laid-back vibes. Alternatively, channel what some are calling your inner ‘shipster’ and weave a nautical feel into your ensemble with Breton stripes, sailor shirts and anchor motifs. Ahoy, indeed! 1. A white wedding is elegant, luxurious and timeless. It’s everything you want a chic country house wedding to be. And, captured against the grand climes of Orchardleigh Estate, this styled shoot showcases how a white wedding can be warm and inviting yet also modern and glamorous. “I wanted to take a classic theme and add a little injection of colour whilst still keeping the overall mood luxurious,” explains photographer and stylist Jen Shoubridge of Jennifer Jane Photography. “Adding some subtle accents of gold is a great way of bringing the warmth of colour to your day while keep the overall aesthetic and ambience timeless.” A stationery suite featuring gold foil, calligraphy and bespoke wax seals sets the elegant tone, while the floral installations – luscious clusters of white signature roses and hydrangeas sitting upon tall gold stands – makes for a luxurious and captivating tablescape against the historic, foliage-cloaked walls of the stately home. “White plates are paired with gold cutlery and gold-rimmed glassware, which looks striking against the simplicity of the crisp white linen,” says Jen. Echoing the splendour and palette, the cake is an intricate vision of gold leaf and exquisite floral and lace detailing, displayed alongside a variety of delectable and finely crafted sweet delights, from cake pops to iced cookies. Such luxe styling demands a special dress, and – accessorised with a bespoke, handcrafted gold crown – this shoulder-skimming ivory ballgown with pockets evokes a sense of regal romance with a modern twist. The groom’s classic black-tie ensemble perfectly complements the elegant and enduring appeal of this luxe aesthetic.

feature | THE TREND REPORT

THE TREND REPORT Here’s our round-up of the latest trends to help you design a day that’s as uniquely ‘wow’ as it is ‘now’ words Hannah May

When it comes to wedding trends, the trick is to take something you like and make it your own. Rather than copying the latest looks outright, infuse a sense of individual character by selecting a few focal trends from the moment to reflect the time in which you’re marrying, but do it in a personalised way to ensure it’s timelessly ‘you’.

Tree planting parties Weddings are getting greener. From zero-carbon events to barefoot parties in swoon-worthy outdoor spaces, couples are choosing to pay homage to and nurture Mother Nature in an ever-increasing number of ways. Tree planting provides the perfect gesture to symbolise a new start and give back to the earth, encouraging you and your guests to mindfully take stock in the simple and grounding act of rewilding benevolence. It could be featured as part of your ceremony, as an alternative gift list idea by requesting donations toward a tree planting project, or as a pre or post-wedding party at a location of your choice, be it your own garden or a local park as you gather loved ones for a gorgeously green day together followed by an al fresco feast.

Local and bespoke menus

Beautiful and the Feast

Beautiful and the Feast

Supporting local businesses is fast becoming the trend du jour. It’s not just Covid-19 and the global climate crises that have shifted our perspective, but old-fashioned good sense, too. Sourcing locally means more and better quality for your buck, minus the air miles, which is especially true when it comes to food production. Home-grown food usually tastes better, is fresher, more nutrient-filled and less spoilt by the transportation process. What’s more, by designing a menu with your caterer to reflect your venue, season and palate, you’re guaranteed a bespoke wedding breakfast that will be raved about long after the last morsel has been devoured.

Mini cakes The move toward miniature is about making everything feel extra special and considered, and this year’s penchant for single-serve personal-sized bakes is an extension of the spoilsome trend. Pick from a tower of iced cakes or cupcakes (perhaps doughnuts, profiteroles or brownies) or proffer mini cakes as dessert or packaged up as individual favours in their own beautiful box as an evening or take-home treat; you can even post these to guests unable to attend. For extra style points, opt for a design featuring handcrafted sugar paste flowers, gold accents, ombré effect, and alcoholic flavours such as prosecco and piña colada.

An ambient experience Plunge your guests’ senses into sheer delight or state of abandon with an immersive atmosphere. Think fairy light or floral caves and curtains, art installations, and roaming and interactive entertainment. This could take the form of a caricature artist, ceilidh dancing, magician, stand-up comedy, circus show, glitter bar, garden games and rides, casino, karaoke, sharing platters, s’mores or live cooking – for the ultimate in surround sound, sight, taste, scent and touch. Stimulate each and all of these for a pleasure-filled party that’s impossible to forget.

Dried flowers Dried flowers are all the rage for a reason. Not only do they bring a natural and rustic vibe that’s particularly fitting for a festival or countrythemed wedding of any season, they also lend a wonderfully wild edge to your décor. One of the joys of dried flowers is their versatility, allowing you to incorporate a variety of tones and textures into your space, with the extra bonus of their longevity, since they also tend to last longer than fresh blooms. From floral crowns, buttonholes and bouquets to suspended arrangements, arches and centrepieces, a mixture of grasses, petals, seedpods and foliage can be combined to create a modern low-maintenance look. Pretty pastels There’s a particular buzzword that continues to linger on the lips of wedding world: pastels. And it’s not confined to the décor, since dresses and groomswear are also sporting the muted shades. The most popular ‘tints’ of the moment range from dusty pinks and mint green to powder blues and pale peaches. Splice with a bright for a colour scheme that packs an especially contemporary colour punch (see p.77 for our guide on navigating your way through colour palettes for your wedding!).

Natural, vegan, and plastic and cruelty-free, each item is handcrafted in small batches in Chloe Osborn’s rural Devon studio and packaged with real rose petals. We’re particularly smitten with the sustainable soy wax Kama Love Candle, which is created using rose, sandalwood and jasmine pure essential oils infused with rose quartz – gorgeous for favours or bringing a little extra love to your wedding tabletops. The Lavender and Mandarin Calming Mist provides an antidote to those pre-wedding nerves, while the Chandra Midnight Oil will hydrate your skin and soothe your senses – gift either of them to your guests as a token of thanks. We also love the Damask Rose and Vetivert Himalayan Bath Salts, a heady blend that’ll take bathtime to new spa-like heights. Chloe can create personal gift messages, placing your selection in a cotton drawstring bag that can be personalised with an individually designed stamp. moksa.co.uk

“Your colour palette is a small selection of colours that will form the basis of your entire wedding day design,”

explains Rebecca. “For example, you may know you’d like pink to play a part in the wedding, but is that a muted blush pink, a hot pink or more of a mauve? There are some great tools online for creating and experimenting with palettes.” Try Coolors, a colour scheme generator (coolors.co) or Canva (canva.com/ colors/color-palette-generator). “Another tip would be to incorporate a contrasting colour or a darker tone that will help when it comes to furniture choices, stationery design and florals,” she adds. “Once you have determined your palette, look for direct inspiration on Pinterest and try to create a cohesive mood board for you and your suppliers to work from – that way you are all working from the same page.” Specialising in wedding styling and personalised wedding stationery, Nikki Sherriff from Knots and Kisses (knotsandkisses.co.uk) is replete with practical advice on how to select your scheme. “Never just pick one or two colours!” she cautions. “Picking a colour palette for your wedding should be no different to decorating your home. If you pick just a specific shade of blue and pair it with just white tablecloths your whole scheme is going to look flat and potentially depressing! As a stylist and designer, I always make sure I pick a neutral palette of at least two base tones and then one or two accent colours on top of this, to give a colour scheme real depth.” She also warns couples not to get caught up in the process of over-matching colours, or obsessively trying to recreate a single tone in every aspect of the day. “Don’t try and match everything to your bridesmaids’ dresses!” she urges. “Not only are you going to end up with a flat colour scheme, but you will never find everything in an identical shade to a specific fabric!” She does have an easy solution on how to achieve a

beautiful scheme, should you insist on a single colour. “Pick a shade of that colour and then pick different tones around it so you have, say, three shades of that

Styling & stationery Knots & Kisses Clare Kinchin Photography

colour to work with. So if you want a purple wedding, incorporate your favourite shade of plum, for example, and then add accent colours of mauve and lavender to complement it.” Rebecca agrees. “My biggest overall tip is to balance colours within proportion,” she says. “There are lots of wedding elements you can add colour to, from the flowers, bridesmaids’ dresses, wedding cake and even your glassware so it is important to select one or two main colours within your palette and use the others as accent colours only for a cohesive, well executed look.”

Trendy tones One way to ensure that your palette packs a sartorial punch is to select something from the year’s top trends. By splicing a fashionable shade into your scheme, not only are you making your day instantly more modern

bridesmaids’ gowns to the latest homewares, accessories and décor. Plus, there’s plenty of scope to make it your own to ensure a beautifully bespoke day that’s as on-trend as it is reflective of you. You could always take your cue directly from colour experts, Pantone, who for the first time ever this year have chosen two colours for 2021: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating. “The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a colour combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit,” says Pantone Colour Institute executive, Leatrice Eiseman. Their other new colours for the year include warm golden-orange, marigold, cerulean, rust, and French blue. Everywhere from interiors to the catwalks – and particularly in wedding world – you’ll see these shades, alongside flashes of burnt orange, burgundy, purples, pastels, mustard and ochre. “After a year of despondency and heartache, people are ready for some colour in their lives in 2021 and beyond! I think this is one of the main reasons Pantone picked a bright sunny yellow for their colour of the year,” says Nikki, who has some advice about how to tone colour palettes. “Sugary pastels are definitely back, but don’t even think about toning it! Go as saccharine as you dare with Barbie pinks, vibrant lilacs and strong mints, and if you’re mixing them altogether, that’s even better,” she suggests. “Boho will still be with us for a while to come with gorgeous deep atmospheric colour palettes of rusts, ochres and terracottas. Mixing them with beautiful wood tones is perfect, and remember these colours are not just for autumn and can be used all year round,” she adds. “A combination of blues and blushes are still featuring heavily – especially in weddings by the sea in Devon and Cornwall. The colours are relaxing Styling Rebecca Marie Weddings & Events Chloe Ely Photography

and can create a bright and fresh feel to your wedding, perfect for spring,” observes Rebecca. “There’s lots more pink popping up, but definitely more of a dusky tone paired with sage greens, pops of black or dried florals. I love this trend and the biggest benefit is that it doesn’t need to feel ‘girly’,” she says. “There are also pops of yellows emerging within wedding designs and I think we will begin to see more of this into 2022 matched with other more pared-back colours. My favourite ever-rising trend is a neutral palette; think mix-and-match champagne bridesmaids’ dresses, layered linens and fabrics in muted tones and botanicals in deep caramel tones.”

Get clued up on your wedding blooms with wed’s compendium of petals words Rebecca Matthews Somewhere along the path from the engagement to the wedding day, you’ll be faced with a petal predicament: which flowers would you like to dress your day? When are they in season? And, most importantly, what exactly does an anemone, ranunculus or hellebore actually look like? For those not au fait with flowers, it can be something of a sticking point. After all, your choice of flowers is key to setting the tone, colour and even scent of your day – and a little floral knowledge goes a long way. We’ve picked out some popular wedding flowers, along with pointers on symbolism and seasonality, to get you started.

There’s something beautiful about dressing your day with personalised petals. Florists Helen Edwards of The Velvet Daisy (thevelvetdaisy.co.uk), Lisa Marie Grigsby of Down by the River Florals (downbytheriver.co.uk) and Laura Hingston (laurahingstonflowers. com) share their top tips

1. Tell your story through your flowers. As a floral artist I love it when couples

2. Include a special piece of vintage jewellery. It might be a piece from a late grandmother, aunt, mother or someone else special, such as a brooch which could be pinned to the ribbon on the bridal bouquet.

3. Choose flowers or foliage for their meanings. It could be thyme for courage, rosemary for remembrance or purple lilac for memories of first love. These symbolisms can be so special and are a thoughtful way to consider the decorations you include on your day. There are some wonderful books which may be a good starting point such as ‘Discovering the Meaning of Flowers’ by Shane Connolly and ‘The Language of Flowers’ by Vanessa Diffenbaugh.

6. Think about the scent of your flowers. You might choose beautiful British blooms, garden roses or trailing jasmine and herbs, bringing everything to life with their delicate and heady scents. Lisa

7. Include personal items in your flowers. Small framed photographs of loved ones who can’t be there on your day can be either placed in your bouquet or perhaps in a top table arrangement for only you and you husband to see. Laura

8. Choose the flowers you love. Think about your favourite blooms and pop in a few your fiance may like. Incorporate flowers to reflect your heritage, culture or occupation. Helen

9. Create a keepsake after the wedding. It might be pressed flower collages in copper hanging frames, or contact a bespoke maker who preserves flowers as paperweights or in glass resin jewellery. Lisa

10. Create a bouquet using fresh and faux flowers. Keep the faux flowers and add fresh seasonal flowers to them as the year progresses. Helen

11. Get involved in the design process with your floral designer. The process should involve several conversations, emails and Pinterest boards. Your floral designs will evolve during this process and eventually be everything you want them to be. This can ultimately be one of the most rewarding parts of your big day! Laura

FLOWER POWER Whatever the size of your budget or guest list, wow-worthy flowers can bring your wedding to life words Elizabeth Chester

Flowers are guaranteed to impress in all seasons.

Emma Hewlett Floral Design Paige Grace Photography

While tradition dictates flowers appear in bouquets, buttonholes and bridesmaids’ baskets, these days we see them covering every available surface and cascading down from ceilings and beams, and hanging from inside yurts and marquees. “Couples are being a lot bolder with their ideas for weddings and are looking for new and exciting ways to display flowers,” says Emma Hewlett from Emma Hewlett Floral Design (emmahewlett.co.uk). Whether your flowers are real or faux, created by your florist or DIY, here’s some expert advice for your wedding day flower arrangements.

Tide Flowers Toby Lowe Photography

Centrepieces Using a tree as a centrepiece will really make a statement. Blossom in particular, with its soft, romantic look, makes for whimsical and romantic table décor, and you can create a fairy-tale vibe with ivory or pink cherry blossom trees. Depending on the size of your displays and reception space, the branches could reach high above your guests, creating a petal canopy for your guests to dine beneath. Emma suggests that pampas grass is another to consider. “Due to its height, it can create a real statement in designs,” she says. “I’ve also seen a move into a slightly more tropical feel with the use of palms.” We love the idea of weaving different locations around the globe into your day, by using tropical flowers as a nod towards your travels. “Tablescapes that bring the outdoors in are stunning,” says Lisa Grigsby from Down by the River Florals (downbytheriverflorals.co.uk). But they don’t always have to be super-sized. “Depending on the season, you could scatter acorns and pine cones on the table, or delicately pressed flowers. Mini dried flower bunches work well as table settings, alongside beautiful linen table runners and plenty of candles at different heights. Delicate details coupled with a feature installation are perfect for inspiring a magical atmosphere for your special day,” she says.

Floral Arches Steeped in tradition, we have seen arches go from moderate to super-sized in recent years. We adore the idea of a bulbous arch bursting with your favourite The Velvet Daisy Rik Pennington Photography

FLOWER POWER

If you’re having a smaller wedding, says Lisa “you may be able to use some of your budget to create a floral

installation or archway to frame your day. Current trends include a free-standing structure, a classic pagoda or using suspended hoops or floral clouds.” For extra oomph, don’t stop at your ceremony or venue’s steps – consider arches that cascade down steps or continue along pathways or alongside outdoor aisles. “Move over standard floral arch, and maybe think geometric shapes or metal structures,” adds Emma.

Suspended Florals Look up! As wedding décor gets ever more creative and awe-inspiring, every inch of ceremony and reception spaces are filled with wonderful ideas and creations. And nothing says wowing your crowd like mid-air creations. Suspended flowers can work in many ways, but we love the idea of swathes of tumbling flowers above the couple as they say their vows. Talk to your florist about ideas that will work with your venue, perhaps exploring oversized floral clouds suspended over top tables, over the aisle or above

Down by the River Florals Thomas Frost Photography

the couple during the ceremony. These not only look incredible but smell divine, too! Similarly, a pergola-style frame bedecked with hanging flowers that creates an indoor canopy for guests to dine underneath is nothing short of floral-fabulous.

Tipis & Marquees The nature of marquees, tipis and yurts mean they have huge, cavernous ceilings just waiting to be filled. And filling them with flowers and plants is the perfect way to personalise your wedding under canvas. Flowers can tumble from hoops, wind their way around marquee poles or fall from chandeliers. We’ve seen ceiling spaces filled with ferns and teaming with hydrangeas or an assortment of beautifully coloured seasonal flowers. But again, if you can’t quite stretch to super-sized installations, you can still have wow factor floral pieces. “If you have fewer flowers, just use larger blooms – big and blousy varieties of flower – to create impact,” suggests Helen Edwards from The Velvet Daisy (thevelvetdaisy.co.uk).

Twigs & Branches Floral arrangements don’t have to be confined to flowers. Willow is a beautiful, natural element that can be weaved into stunning sculptures for garden parties, or used as an archway, either in the traditional rounded shape or even made into an angular frame. Branches are budget-stretching so consider using them in rustic celebrations and hang or weave them, or simply enjoy them with other dried foliage scattered around your venue in mismatched vases.

Bring The Outdoors In If you’re wavering about what the weather might be doing on your big day and you just don’t want to plan

an outside do, how about bringing the outdoors in? We love the idea of an outdoor scene created indoors using

a tumbling wisteria tree that the happy couple can say their vows beneath. With benches covered in roses and a myriad of faux flowers, this outdoor garden idea can create a truly magical vista. If that sounds like too big a project, a simple addition to your ceremony can still have an enormous impact. “You might consider meadow-style arrangements lining your aisle,’ suggests Lisa.

Light It Up Gardens and outdoor spaces are easy to illuminate with fairy lights of all shapes and descriptions. But why keep it just to lights? Deck trees with hanging flowers – particularly if it’s not during the summer months – and create a magical garden wonderland where you don’t have to wait for Mother Nature to dictate what grows and when. And don’t forget, floral décor doesn’t just have to be about the location itself. Get creative with your waiting staff and bedeck their outfits, or any trays they may be serving food and drink from, in flowers to

match your theme. But if big florals aren’t your thing, or your budget has had to go elsewhere, it’s important to remember you can still wow with a small number of flowers. “In terms of the wow factor, it doesn’t matter how many flowers are required,” says Helen. “You can still create impact by using bold, stronger colours, and tones. A simple bouquet full of assorted peonies, without foliage, can create a bold entrance for any beautiful bride.” The Velvet Daisy

Classic yet contemporary, elegant yet natural – this styled shoot offers pared-back and timelessly beautiful inspiration for couples planning a close-to-nature celebration. The softness and romance, together with the chic simplicity of a green and white palette, couldn’t be more perfect for modern times, given the rising popularity of outdoor weddings and natural décor. With its picture-perfect grounds and modern interiors, Higher Holcombe makes a dream canvas for the neutral palette and lush accents of green. The florals see crisp white blooms nestled amongst abundant foliage, the untamed style of the arrangements bringing a fresh, relaxed look to the tablescape. Gilded tableware and stationery, adorned with calligraphy and leaf motifs, add elegance, while the cake, crowned with delicate greenery and simple wooden figures, is packed with simple and stylish charm. The dresses are as classically romantic as the flowers: think sleek and striking silhouettes, from a shoulder-skimming sheath and high-low cut through to ethereal gowns embellished with soft lace and vinelike detailing. Delicate jewelled headpieces, leafy crowns and simple veils make dreamy finishing touches to softly waved hair – perfect picks for the modern, down to earth bride.

STYLE IT OUT Looking for some fabulous ways to personalise your ceremony from a stylist’s perspective? Nikki Sherriff from Knots & Kisses (knotsandkisses.co.uk) shares her ideas

Focal points Think about whether your venue has a ‘natural’ focal point for your ceremony, such as an existing structure or doorway, for example. Let that guide you as to how much effort you need to put into creating something extra. A doorway can be simply framed by flowers, but a blank canvas venue might need a structure or backdrop added to create that focal point.

Have a plan Have a cohesive plan in place for the overall style of your wedding before deciding on décor for your ceremony. There is no point falling in love with a Pinterest image of a backdrop and then it being totally out of sync with everything else you have planned. Think about adding personal touches to any stationery you’re providing for guests as part of the ceremony. Order of the Day cards on each seat can include a photo of you as a couple, or perhaps some wording from a poem or book that is special to you.

COUNTRY HOUSES & CASTLES Live out your very own fairytale in one of Devon’s elegant country houses or majestic castles

Rockbeare Manor A ceremony on a pretty outdoor terrace flanked by flowerfilled parkland ticks the box for sheer off-the-scale romance – but that’s only part of the dreamy appeal of Rockbeare Manor. Nestled in the countryside near Exeter, the Grade I listed Regency house is light, elegant and stylish yet relaxed, its fulllength windows framing 100 acres of glorious parkland dotted with mature trees. Available on an exclusive-use basis, indoor ceremonies take place beneath the twinkling chandelier of the Dining Room, while the light-filled Ballroom hosts sumptuous feasts and revelry for up to 160 guests. There’s also a beautiful balconied Bridal Drawing Room for the preparations, a Billiard Room and 13 plush bedrooms with sink-into-me bathtubs and far-reaching views across Dartmoor. rockbearemanor.co.uk Total capacity: 160 Civil ceremonies licence: Yes - indoor: 2 outdoor: 1 Guest accommodation: for 30, plus 5 rollaway beds for children Dog-friendly: No (couple’s dog is allowed for ceremony/ reception but not overnight)

Exeter Golf & Country Club The buzz of Exeter might be on the doorstep, but you wouldn’t know it at Exeter Golf & Country Club. A hidden pocket of country charm a stone’s throw from the city streets, the tranquil air and lush parkland of the venue exude a heady sense of romance. The crisp white Georgian manor house, Wear Park, stands at its heart – think huge floor-to-ceiling windows, sweeping staircases and sumptuous furnishings. Marry in a choice of suites, blending the classic romance of the elegant, Regency-style Topsham Room to the contemporary grey, wood and stone theme of The Mews, complete with its private roof terrace. The Topsham Room offers glorious views of the golf course with a veranda for al fresco drinks. An experienced team of chefs will create culinary masterpieces, ranging from afternoon teas to decadent banquets, and for that pre-wedding prep, Wear Park Spa offers bridal beauty treatments through to luxurious Elemis facials, massage and body scrubs. exetergcc.co.uk Total capacity: 150 evening Civil ceremonies licence: Yes - indoor: 2 outdoor: 0 Guest accommodation: No Dog-friendly: No (can come for photos on request)

Or venture down the leafy paths of the gardens and marry beneath the pergola’s quirky rust-tin roof cradled by trees and flowers. Spend your wedding night in the stylishly renovated Roxie House with its rolltop bath and wood burner, and revel in the away-from-it-all romance of this historic and heavenly corner of east Devon. With the wonder of small weddings coming to the fore, wed looks at the art of photographing them words Hannah May

THE SMALLER PICTURE

If you’re planning a micro or elopement wedding with few or no guests in the frame, you’ll be the photographer’s sole subjects. Whether you’re a selfie addict or shrinking wallflower, the matter of wedding photography is one that can make even the most confident couple camera-shy. But fret not, for this is your chance for boundless adventure, to cast off Freeformimages Photography

the usual restrictions and celebrate your day, your way – including your photography, which has found new ways of late to capture your wedding with the same unique kind of style and character. “Almost every couple I’ve ever worked with says to me that they wish they’d had more time together on the day to soak in the romance and significance of their wedding,” says photographer Hannah Wilde (hannah-wilde.com). “This is the beauty of an elopement or micro wedding – you have the entire day (or weekend…

Thomas Frost Photography

or week!) to bask in each other’s presence and really absorb the moments in ways you simply can’t do when you are managing the events of the day for the sake of everyone around you rather than for just the two of you.” So how does this new W-day look? “It seems that elopers and small intimate wedding couples are looking to bring a new spin to the day,” observes photographer Thomas Frost (thomasfrostphotography.com). “Many seem to have decided that if they can’t

Clare Kinchin Photography

have a physically big event, they can have a big adventure. And that is really my bag!” he enthuses. “I love adventures and the more adventurous the couple, the better. Since Covid-19, I have been getting in the water with couples, trekking them up mountains and through deep woods and moors. We have been dancing in the rain and swimming in the sea; it has been brilliantly mad!”

Verity Westcott Photography

The trick is not to overthink: simply decide how best to suit yourselves, then invite your preferred photographer along. “I have had the honour of photographing a few elopements where I get to spend the day with the couple and their family, telling the whole story of their day from the beginning to end,” reveals photographer Verity Westcott (veritywestcottphotography.com). “For elopements, adventure is the next big

Freeformimages Photography

119

thing. As it is just the two of them, they have more time so are up for finding epic spots for photos, and the experience becomes part of the story.” “I’d say the real beauty of an elopement or micro wedding is the intimacy of the day,” says Hannah. “The reduced guest list means you don’t have to worry about pleasing anyone other than yourselves and your choice of celebration can be entirely down to your own personal preferences. High quality wedding photography is essential to ensure you capture the essence of the day powerfully and authentically, not just for yourselves to look back on and share with your children and grandchildren one day, but to share immediately with your loved ones who weren’t able to be there with you on the day,” she explains. With the rulebook well and truly shredded, you can design a day that makes the most of your resources and time together with the added benefit of exclusively selftailoring your choices. If you fancy a hike or hot air balloon ride, go for it, since you won’t be abandoning anyone or strong-arming someone (other than your thrill-seeking photographer!) to join you. “I met a couple in a car park next to the beach in October,” says Thomas of a recent event, where he was shooting photos and video. “We had drinks then a swim in the sea – no wetsuits for any of us! Then back to the venue for a hot tub, prep, ceremony and visit by an alpaca. Then a visit to a different beach, cliff climb, afternoon tea, dress change and evening sunset handfasting ceremony… What an epic day!” Clare Kinchin Photography

Thomas sees this increased flexibility and more options as a really positive step to diversifying the

Freeformimages Photography

industry, noticing how couples are leading the change and challenging the status quo. “We have some epic landscapes in the south-west and with small weddings and elopements you can really make the most of this extra freedom. Do something different, express yourselves as a couple and do what you want!” he says. “Handfastings are an ancient ritual I expect to be hugely revived as time goes on,” predicts Hannah. “The ritual of marriage can be carried out anywhere – in as wild, far-flung and scenically stunning places as you can imagine. Another trend on the rise is live feeds and documentary-style wedding videos – both of which I am investing time and money in to offer to my clients,” she says of her new service in response to the times. Thomas Frost Photography

“This entails setting up a live feed Zoom-style wedding for those who want to stand on top of a mountain, rugged tor or windswept beach somewhere – alone, but with their loved ones watching in real time. I also step into the video arena to offer handheld-style documentary mixed in with breathtaking cinematic footage to create a film for all of your loved ones to feel like they were there. They can then watch this together with you via virtual film nights or – when restrictions are eased – with a celebratory film viewing.” And if you’re worried that this sounds like a long day in front of the lens, remember that “with smaller weddings generally come fewer hours”, says Verity of how low-pressure the pragmatics are in reality. Key moments are captured and interspersed with pockets of private escape, just the two of you, allowing you to savour some precious togetherness. “It’s not a shoot or about getting great images, it’s about couples exploring these cool environments I take them to,” says Thomas of the laid-back

TWICE A CHARM

Their planning may not have been plain sailing, but Chantelle and George took the opportunity to turn their twist of fate into a gorgeous autumnal celebration A year after they first met at work, Chantelle and George cautiously began dating. “We tried to keep it a secret at work for a while, but were spotted by colleagues driving past us while we were on a date!” laughs Chantelle. On a beautiful October’s day as the couple were walking in the valley of Great Wood, George asked Chantelle to give their dog, Naya, a treat. Much to her surprise, she discovered a ring box in the treat bag before glancing back toward George through teary eyes to accept his emotional proposal. Originally, they picked an April wedding date to mark their 10-year anniversary, but were forced to reschedule their celebrations for October 2020 in line with Covid restrictions. Deer Park Country House was the gorgeous venue for their autumnal affair; the rustic look beautifully carried in the navy and burgundy colour scheme and pheasant feather flourishes. Chantelle donned a stunning Maggie Sottero gown, while George rocked dapper country gent in his burgundy tweed suit complete with a handmade feather bow tie. An outdoor ceremony was followed by a relaxed afternoon of canapés, drinks and photos in the venue’s pictuesque grounds. Guests whetted their appetites with an al fresco assortment of Devon ruby red beef with mini Yorkshire puddings, Brixham smoked haddock and crab bon bons, honey mustard glazed pork belly, goat’s cheese and beetroot samosa, and Caesar salad tartlet with quail egg and smoked chicken. Then came the main dining event, which commenced with roast breast and crispy fried leg of pigeon followed by roast sirloin of beef and sticky date pudding, caramelised banana and Devon clotted cream. “Unusually – but given this was in October and under the regulations at the time – we waved everyone goodbye at 6pm before drinking bubbly in our luxury tree house within the grounds and looking out at the sunset over rolling Devon hills,” reminisces Chantelle of her and George’s early but blissful end to their day. Even though their first set of plans were dashed, Chantelle and George are full of fond memories from their intimate wedding day. “Walking with my bridesmaids and dad to get married before anyone could see us was my favourite moment,” says Chantelle, while for George it was “squinting into the sunlight to catch sight of my beautiful bride and our beloved dog bounding down the aisle with the ring, with only my nearest and dearest around me”, he smiles. “The intimacy was so special.” Despite the stresses of having to reorganise their wedding, Chantelle still urges other couples to immerse themselves fully into the process. “Enjoy every second of the planning – the day is gone in a flash,” she says. “And do what’s right for you. Don’t stretch yourselves trying to please others.” Following their own downsized event, she also extols the ‘less is more’ approach of micro weddings. “Consider a smaller wedding,” she suggests. “We had always planned for much larger numbers, but having such a small number forced on us by the pandemic turned out to be just as lovely, and without any of the pressure of having to ‘get round’ to everyone.” Her final word of advice – “source locally” – is a sound endnote, especially for couples keen to support small businesses and create a bespoke and sustainable day.

Cyndi and Matt hosted a winter wedding full of style and flavour at one of Devon’s most magnificent manor houses Cyndi first met Matt on a cruise ship she was working on. “We were due to sail from Rome but the weather was terrible so we couldn’t sail, which meant I had a night off for once and met Matt in one of the bars on board,” she reflects. Matt chose his 30th birthday to pop the question – and Cyndi had been so preoccupied with planning the best lockdown party possible for him that she was stunned by the proposal. “I cooked all his favourite foods and just as we were going to start dessert, I noticed he wasn’t touching his. He then knelt down next to me and asked me to marry him,” she says. “At first I thought he was joking but then I looked at his face and he looked very emotional. It was so lovely and understated; I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.” The couple fell for the charms of Rockbeare Manor before they’d even set foot in the venue. “We looked at so many online and it was our immediate favourite: we loved the décor, the setting and the feel,” recalls Cyndi. “When we met the team there, it just confirmed to us we had made the right decision. They were wonderful to work with, and our day would not have been what it was without them.” With no specific vision in mind beyond an “elegant and classic” celebration, Cyndi and Matt styled the day accordingly with brass candleholders, calligraphy menus and place names edged in gold leaf, plus forest green velvet ribbon tied around sprigs of wild greenery for the tabletops. “To add to the feel of elegance we also gave our guests a dress code of black tie,” adds Cyndi. Their brief of “British, seasonal and wild” was gorgeously fulfilled by the floristry, which featured lots of greenery dotted with deep red berry accents. And the sensory delights didn’t end there, with food being another top priority, as Cyndi explains. “Once we knew our total numbers would be 15 we decided to go all-out and make it an unforgettable day.” A food and wine-pairing menu was the decadent result. “It was so unique and different for a wedding,” says Cyndi. “We really wanted to show our love to our family who were able to be there, and this felt like a lovely way to do that.” Post-ceremony afternoon tea canapés were served ahead of a cocktail hour with a saxophonist. “It felt very modern and cool – like you were in a really upmarket cocktail bar,” comments Cyndi. Then it was time for the feast. Amuse-bouches of spicy parsnip soup were followed by chicken and chorizo terrine and a fish course of pan-fried hake. Guests then tucked into Devon fillet of beef, lemon tart, and petit fours. The evening continued with afterdinner drinks and a grazing board of local meats and cheeses while everyone relaxed in the lounge. “The favourite moment for both of us by far was saying our vows and getting married; that was our absolute priority. Even if we could only have been married just the two of us, we would have gone ahead because that’s what the day was all about for us,” says Cyndi in retrospect. “Like any couple planning a micro wedding, we worried about keeping guests entertained and whether it would feel small. But our guests were never bored and it never felt like ‘just’ 15 people; it felt intimate and special and not once like it was lacking. So many people have asked if we would do it differently or postpone – it was the best day and we would not have changed it,” she says. “Planning a wedding during Covid really does help you prioritise what is important, and even though it was difficult at times we are so glad that we forged ahead.”

WORTH THE WAIT

Replanning their wedding four times meant Elizabeth and Ian truly relished their wonderfully intimate winter celebration “Ian proposed in New York on the boating lake in Central Park; it was so romantic just the two of us tucked into a little secluded spot on the edge of the lake among the trees,” reveals Elizabeth. “We then celebrated with champagne followed by a candlelit dinner cruise on the river.” Pre-Covid, the pair had planned a grand country house wedding in August. “We knew in March that this was not going to be possible, so we postponed our original plans to February 2021,” explains Elizabeth. As the pandemic went on, the couple deliberated whether to keep delaying or redrafting their plans entirely, and in September decided upon an intimate wedding at their local pub in November. “Everything was in place to go ahead with the 30 guests we were allowed at that time but as we approached the date the restrictions increased and we dropped down to just 15 (including us),” explains Elizabeth. “Then the Saturday before our wedding, Boris Johnson announced we were going back into lockdown on Thursday. Amazingly, our suppliers pulled out all the stops and in the space of 48 hours we had rearranged the wedding to Wednesday – the day before lockdown! The support from everyone was really quite overwhelming.” Elizabeth wore an elegant princess gown for their small church ceremony and, in keeping with the classic white and champagne gold palette of the day, carried a bouquet of white roses. “When we came out of the church we were treated to the amazing sound, followed by sight, of wild geese in formation flying overhead – quite the spectacle to behold,” recalls Elizabeth. The wedding party walked to the pub where they were greeted in the courtyard with mulled wine, champagne and canapés, as saxophonist Wendy Allen performed a live jazz soundtrack. Speeches were followed by a five-course tasting menu featuring mussel pistachio broth with basil pesto, treacle-cured salmon, poached chicken risotto, fillet of beef, and sticky toffee pudding. “We thought we would feel like we had ‘missed out’ on having the big wedding we originally planned, but actually feel that our wedding was so much more special for all the trials and tribulations and the unexpected intimate nature of it. We could properly spend time speaking with each guest, and everyone – especially us – just felt so grateful that we were there at all and had managed to pull it off at the last minute,” reflects Elizabeth. A particular memory from the day stands out. “The pub was full of diners making the most of their last meal out for a while and, though our wedding party was secluded from the rest of the pub, each time Ian and I walked into the main pub or went out into the courtyard, we were greeted by cheers and applause from the other diners, which just added to the magical atmosphere of the evening!” she remembers. “Having arranged – and then rearranged – our entire wedding, we cannot stress the importance of being organised and developing a good relationship with your suppliers,” says Elizabeth when asked to dispense her best planning advice. “Keep in touch with your suppliers regularly, especially in the ever-changing situation. This approach really paid off and everyone went the extra mile for us; we could not have asked for more!” she adds. “We’d also say step back and think about what is really important to you,” she advises. “Marrying the person you love and being able to share it with those most important and close to you is what you will cherish. Planning a wedding during a pandemic is emotionally exhausting, so focus on what really matters – and trust us, if any of the other bits work out too, then it will feel like such a bonus!”

SUMMER DAZE

Jess and Jack’s colourful and character-filled wedding combined a scenic Devon setting with a feast for all the senses Jess and Jack first laid eyes on each other while working together on the film ‘Paddington’. It was during a whistle-stop New Year’s Eve tour of Berlin when Jack was helping to paint Jess’ nails that he popped the question, and the couple began to set their wedding plans into motion. The couple picked the picturesque locale of Fingals in Dittisham, where Jess grew up, for their ‘summer meadow’ celebrations. The venue – hidden in a rolling valley near the River Dart estuary comprising a jumbled mix of characterful buildings and outside spaces – provided the idyllic place for Jess and Jack to celebrate in unique style alongside their family and friends. The style factor was in full force throughout. Jess donned a designer silk gown with a guipure lace top finished with a gorgeous floral crown and chapel-length veil, while Jack wore a sharp navy three-piece suit with a floral print tie. Then there was the floristry. A series of stunning arrangements in the church created beautiful focal points for the congregation and continued at Fingals, where the striking fusion of foliage with neutral and blush-toned blooms ensured a seamless blending of the indoors and outdoors. The mid-afternoon ceremony provided Jess with her most poignant part of the day, where she fondly recalls “listening to every single person singing their hearts out and also hearing our nephews’ specially composed song for us in the church”. The transport – comprising two tractors and trailers – was another memorable feature. Guests squeezed onto the hay bales to travel to Fingals and, on arrival, enjoyed drinks in the sunshine. After the speeches, everyone settled into the magnificent clear-sided marquee, where suspended floral installations dotted with hanging glass baubles containing tea lights ensured a magical and natural-themed ambience. Here, guests tucked into a delectable feast comprising white crab, lovage mayo and spring onion salad with crispy samphire, lemon oil and watercress, alongside sharing boards of roasted lamb belly stuffed with lamb mince, chorizo and lovage, roasted spring onions, rosemary oil and toasted pumpkins seeds, served with jugs of minted lamb bone jus. The evening was spent dancing into the small hours to the soundtrack of a live band and local DJ, before the newly-weds retired to relax and reflect upon their emotional day. “I spent a lot of the time crying – with joy and happiness of course!” says Jess, in the throes of looking back. “Family from all corners of the Earth made it to our wedding, which made it very special.” As her number one planning priority, she says “get married within a year if you can, otherwise your life is consumed and all about the wedding!” before wisely adding “and make sure you always consult your other half!”

LA DOLCE VITA Kerrie and Dan’s vineyard wedding was full of intimate moments beneath sunny skies A festive trip to New York in 2018 led to a rather special Christmas proposal for Kerrie and Dan, who met through mutual friends at the village pub in Ide a few years earlier. “I’d been quite nervous about getting the ring through security checks but it all went smoothly,” reflects Dan, who asked Kerrie to marry him in Central Park on Christmas Day. Their plans led them to Brickhouse Vineyard, where the couple set about planning a special day filled with their loved ones, and a floral design of “botanical with eucalyptus, mixed with dried elements and blush pinks”. “Due to Covid, we actually only saw the venue in person a week before,” explains Dan, of their leap of faith to book the venue without viewing it or even knowing if their wedding could go ahead. “Covid made things pretty touch and go, but luckily fate was on our side as weddings were permitted from five days before our date, so we felt very lucky.” Cramming in suit and dress fittings, alterations and hair trials in the few days before their wedding, the unflappable couple woke up on the morning of their wedding feeling “very relaxed”. “Amazingly, it all came together,” says Dan. “We got so incredibly lucky; it was glorious. We can’t recommend Brickhouse Vineyard enough! It felt like we were in Italy; the sun was shining all day and we were amongst beautiful vineyards, yet just 20 minutes from Exeter.” The afternoon ceremony provided Dan’s personal highlight of the day. “My favourite moment was looking back to see Kerrie walking down the aisle, she looked beautiful,” he says. The vows were followed by a confetti shower in the vineyard, then drinks, canapés and photographs to a soundtrack of hand-picked songs performed by a pianist. Later, the guests feasted on starters of sun-dried tomato and mozzarella arancini, mains of slow-roasted shoulder of lamb with all the trimmings, and a trio of desserts including triple chocolate brownie, glazed lemon tart, and traditional Eton mess, which were served under a stretch tent strewn with twinkling fairy lights. Then it was time for the speeches, which had a surprise twist. “During my speech, we announced that we were expecting a new addition to the family!” remembers Dan. “The reaction from both bridesmaids was priceless – they were both in tears and almost on the floor.” Plus, in a poignant nod to Kerrie’s nan who couldn’t be there, the couple made sure she still played a part in the day by using glassware she had gifted them for toasting and serving tea and coffee in her antique cups and saucers. “We had the most perfect day and there isn’t anything we would change. We shared a concern that, due to Covid guest limitations, there may be lulls in the day, but there really weren’t,” says Dan, who points out an unexpected highlight of the guest restrictions. “We liked that everyone who attended had a role to play, such as bridesmaids, flower girls, witnesses and groomsmen,” he says. “The day was so perfectly intimate and personal, and we didn’t have to spread ourselves thin saying hello to people we’d not seen in ages. We could really be there in the moment.” Meanwhile, his advice for those planning similar weddings is sweet and simple. “Enjoy the day,” he says. “We were told how quick it would go, and it really does… Blink and you miss it.”

TIME OF MY LIFE Niamh and Conor pulled out all the stops for their ’80s-themed wedding packed with neon brights, pop tunes and a showstopping pizza cake! Niamh and Conor first clapped eyes on each other in their Irish hometown when they met via a mutual friend. Almost a decade later, the couple were holidaying in Rhodes when Conor dropped to one knee in an empty cobbled street. “Idyllic!” swoons Niamh of the romantic, sun-spilled moment. Huntstile Organic Farm was the second venue they visited, and it was love at first sight. “We knew straight away we wanted it,” says Niamh. “All the staff were friendly, experienced, accommodating, genuine people, and the food is home-made and organic. And they handmade our pizza wedding cake!” Their eclectic weekend of celebrations was styled on a particularly fond decade for what Niamh and Conor dubbed their ‘1980s Wedfest’. “Each table featured a different ’80s movie and we had an amazing ’80s band in the evening,” Niamh explains. They meticulously planned, styled and executed every detail while individually sourcing the decor. “Our wedding favours were donations to the mental health charity Mind, with sunflower seeds for our guests to take home. I made the bunting and Order of the Day pallet and we purchased ’80s movie-themed props for the tables,” says Niamh, who also selected a huge neon love sign as their stylistic centrepiece. Describing their extended weekend as “relaxed, boho, nontraditional and retro”, the pre-celebrations began with a trip to the beach with their photographer before their hilltop stone circle ceremony, which saw guests being transported on a tractor trailer. Having legally tied the knot in London two days prior (and received tattoos for wedding rings), the stone circle ceremony was presided over by Niamh’s brother and Conor’s best friend and was followed by a lip-smacking feast made by the farm. A relaxed hog roast banquet buffet was rounded off with “amazing desserts that we still talk about!” of berry crumble and sticky toffee pudding, while the evening’s offerings comprised fish and chips with Wexford rissoles along with Niamh and Conor’s “dream come true” – a fantastic pizza wedding cake made in Huntstile’s own pizza oven! Live band Popgun provided the perfect soundtrack as guests partied the night away and chilled out around the bonfire. “My best moment was dancing to ’80s power ballads surrounded by friends and family from far and wide,” reveals Niamh. Looking back at her wedding weekend spectacular, she has just one piece of advice for others in the midst of planning their own ‘wedfest’. “When the day comes, it will fly by so try to savour every minute!” she proclaims.

Say cheese. Adding a disposable or Polaroid camera to each table is always a good icebreaker. Guests can take images of themselves and their table – or you can even print out a list of funny ‘try-toget’ images. Rebecca Games galore. You can’t go wrong with traditional garden games, or even hire a mini golf set, badminton, a coconut shy, or table football. They are a perfect pairing to an afternoon Pimm’s drinks reception. Jessica DIY drinks. Set up a G&T bar where guests can build their own drinks with a choice of gins and garnishes, such as rosemary, mint, cucumber and fruit. You’ll find the interactive element will see guests congregating around the bar and comparing drink options. Jessica The race is on. Challenge guests to compete in comedy races and games such as an egg and spoon race, sack race and hook the duck. Create a leader board (and ideally get a best man to facilitate!). Rebecca

chat and try to find out the answers. You could even add an extra incentive for guests to mingle by adding clues such as “Richard on Table 4 will know the answer to the question about the groom and the three-legged horse!” Jessica Instant laughter. Create an Instagram challenge where you ask guests to create the best images from your wedding such as the best comedy situation, some group laughter, a lone dancer, or a beautiful floral shot. It will get them thinking creatively and you’ll also end up with some gorgeous images to boot. Rebecca Picture this. Get creative with a photo booth and make an elaborate backdrop personal to you as a couple and the aesthetic of your wedding, perhaps something colourful with lots of props, a celestial-themed moon and star backdrop, or a picture from your favourite holiday together. Jessica It’s a hit! Piñatas are a super-fun activity where you can get as many people involved as you want – plus, it’s comical for those who are just watching too! Rebecca Music to our ears. Nothing creates a great atmosphere quite like live music. Have a charismatic roaming trio during the drinks reception, a sitar player or a brass band playing modern tunes that works the room and entice everyone to join them in a trailing conga line! Jessica All in this together. Instead of a potentially awkward first dance, get the entire wedding party on the dance floor together via an announcement by your MC or the band’s frontman. Nothing breaks the ice like 100 people twirling around the floor, trying out a new dance at the same time! Jessica

Start early. If you’re hosting a weekend wedding, start introducing your guests in advance of the wedding day by hosting a game the afternoon before. You could play a friendly game of cricket or rounders (although probably best to avoid the contact sports!). Jessica
