The Meaning of the Wreath at Christmas Cultural Traditions of the Wreath The wreath has been used symbolically for centuries. Pre-Christian, or Pagan, cultures placed much importance on the December celebration of the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year. For them, this was a time of death and rebirth, a celebration of the end of the ever shortening days and the anticipation of the coming promise of spring. As part of many celebrations, evergreen wreaths were gathered as a sign of the approaching spring light. In Sweden, wreaths were fashioned for similar purposes, with the addition of candles that symbolized the power of the sun. The wreath likewise has a storied history in ancient times. In the Persian Empire, wreaths were believed to be a symbol of importance and success, and were worn as headbands. Ancient Greeks placed wreaths of laurel on the heads of victorious athletes in their Olympic Games. Wreaths were worn similarly to crowns by Roman leaders and were also hung on doorways as a sign of victory. Modern Meanings of the Wreath at Christmas The Christmas wreath has come to convey its own set of meanings in modern times. Across time, the circle or ring shape of a wreath that has no beginning and no end symbolizes eternity or eternal rebirth. Pre-Christian cultures’ interpretation of the power of evergreens to battle the forces of winter has evolved into a modern representation of eternal life. The vast array of materials that are used to create a modern wreath carry significance as well. Holly represents immortality, for instance, whereas cedar stands for strength. But for many, the wreath’s symbolic attributes are much simpler than all this. The Christmas wreath has evolved into a sign of welcoming and an acknowledgment of holiday cheer for this season that emphasizes generosity, giving, and the gathering of loved ones.

6 ways to destress your real estate transaction Give people the benefit of the doubt and listen to their concerns. When a buyer or seller is stressed, it often materializes in a late-night angry call or a lengthy email. If you’re on the receiving end of these stress-induced communications, please remember what it’s like to be in your clients’ shoes. While we are juggling multiple home sales at once, this is their only home and it is everything that consumes their thoughts. This home is where they have built their memories and a lot of times grown a family, so it is a very personal experience for them. Most of the time our clients just want someone to listen to their challenges and empathize with them. Remember that for an agent, stress plays out in many ways. When an agent gets defensive in a transaction, please remember that many times this reaction could be triggered by something unrelated to the transaction itself. Maybe this agent is going through personal issues or had an argument with their spouse that morning or is dealing with stressed-out clients as well. More often than not, when my interaction with an agent is stressful, it has little to do with me. Be sensitive to the fact that their frustration isn’t a reflection of your abilities as a real estate professional. Always keep in mind that we are representing our clients’ desires, not our own. We may want to go to bat and fight with another agent over the giant repair addendum they just sent over, but if our clients want to move forward, then we need to humble ourselves and remember that we are working for their wants, not ours. Admit when you’re wrong. If an issue arises where you have fault, quickly admit it and don’t blame others for what happened. Honesty, integrity and humility are characteristics that are seemingly rare in our industry and incredibly needed. You’ll gain respect by owning up to your own faults. Stop and take a deep breath. Before you make a difficult call or begin a tough negotiation, stop to breathe first. Don’t react immediately; respond after taking time to remember what is most important in the situation. When we give knee-jerk reactions, we tend to grow the problem, not the solution. Thoughtful answers are more easily found when you allow time to gather your thoughts. Take time for YOU! Get that massage once a week; go out with friends for some downtime; turn off your phone; and have dinner with your family instead of immediately calling your client back. By filling your own tank, you are able to then fill others. When you are running on empty as an agent, you are no good to yourself or your clients. Relaxing and recharging will help you improve and grow. I hope these tips have been helpful and you’re feeling ready to stay calm, cool, collected and the very best for your clients! 6 signs your kid will grow up to be an agent, too Real estate can be contagious, some say infectious, and, yes, even hereditary. Families with generation after generation of real estate agents are more common than anyone would think. They’re also pretty easy to spot. Here are six signs you’re raising an agent and you’ll be coaching your “little ones” through managing their first closings one day. 1. The mobile lemonade stand When your 7-year-old starts strategically placing (and moving) his or her lemonade stand in efforts to bring in the big bucks, you might have a deal-maker on your hands. An innate sense of the importance of location — and knowing the signs of a soon-to-be super hot market — is a clear sign that a kid has a closer’s charisma running through his veins. 2. No school supplies — everything’s for sale If your former infant is willing to sell anything, including his school supplies, know that your grandkids might get fed by commission. If your child sees a payoff where others see essentials, you’re raising an entrepreneur. 3. Rolling nap times One of the biggest parts of closing a real estate deal is negotiation. If you find yourself arbitrating over nap time, dessert or other kid “concessions,” you might be bringing up an expert bargainer. 4. The under-the-bed bubble Converting a home from chaos into staging success, not to mention deterring sellers from making their own staging mistakes, are critical agent skills. While we’d all like to think everything is beautiful underneath, we know that there are sometimes secret stashes and storage units full of junk behind some closings. If your kid is an expert at room “showings” that would all unravel if you looked under the bed, he or she may have the staging chops to make it in the business. 5. Killer contact list Real estate professionals have to be neighborhood experts. That means they know someone who can help get almost anything done. If your child’s virtual Rolodex is bigger than yours and all of his friends call them for help solving problems, he might have the connections to later to become your neighborhood’s top producer. 6. They’re bringing you leads One of the ancillary benefits of your bundles of joy is that they are an instant connection to the community, which can be great for business. If your tike or teen runs around telling all of his friends, teachers and community members what you do, he may be headed for your shoes. The walking commercial kid is a sure sign that he’s paying attention and taking notes. BrevardElite.com

Sell faster - Homes with an AHS Home Protection Plan sold an average of 10.73 days faster than those without a home warranty. Save Money With a Learning Thermostat If you aren’t programming your home’s thermostat you could be wasting almost $200 a year. Fix that today with a learning thermostat. Most people don’t program their thermostats because it’s complicated. With this one step you can save about 20% on every heating bill. While savings are great, that doesn’t make it less complicated. A learning thermostat will. All you do is change the temperature for a few days as you need it, say when you go to sleep, when you wake up and while you’re gone during the day. After a few days the thermostat “learns” your patterns and will set itself to accommodate your needs. If that’s not smart enough, a learning thermostat senses when no one is in the house and will not heat or cool while you’re gone. It also learns how long it takes to heat or cool your home and will show you how long to reach your desired temperature. It can even find ways to help you lower your energy bill. All this adds up to more money in your pocket instead of just blowing out the windows. BrevardElite.com
