looks To create this month’s cover we used a kaleidoscope effect. Kaleidoscopes were first made by the ancient Greeks but Sir David Brewster officially patented the idea in 1817. His invention was initially used for conducting light polarisation experiments, but they quickly took off as toys. The word itself is made up of three ancient Greek words: kalos (beautiful), eidos (form) and scopos (watcher). Other beautiful things in this issue include Burton cars, Norwegian fjords and photographs from KLM passengers.

Courtesanss used saffron and flower pollen to highlight their features and aristocrats whitened their faces and accentuated their veins with blue make-up. model A passion i for f design d i and classic motoring has led to a successful business for two Dut Dutch brothers WORDS: SCOTT ROANE
When you slide yourself in behind the wheel of a Burton kit car, you immediately get the feeling that you have been transported to another era. While sitting on the springy front bench seat, faced with dials and switches that you must twist, press or pull to get the car started, you soon start to wonder if the modern cars we drive, with all their hi-tech gadgetry, can truly be called progress. When you drag the gear lever into first and bring the revs up, you’re instantly taken back to the glory days of driving, the 1950s, when people actually went ‘motoring’ for motoring’s sake. The company that makes these nostalgic kit cars was started ten years ago by brothers Iwan and Dimitri Göbel, but but their passion for cars developed developed ve ve many years earlier. As boy, As a b oyy, Dimitri, the design side o of duo, of tthe he d uo, collected old car parts and knocked knoc kn ocke ked and and hammered them into go-kart go-kkar go-k go art sstyle tyl yle racers, while Iwan’s entrepreneurial en ntr trep tre epreneu neurial flair started to shine ne through thro thro th oug ugh at at a young age when he started selling sell se llin llin ng spare spare parts from his father’s garage. sp
These days, they live and breathe the Burton Burto car brand from their headquarters in the historic Dutch town of Zutphen. The T idea of kit cars is nothing new – they first became popular in the USA at the turn of o the 20th century. However, they really began to take off in the 1950s before the advent of rustproofing. A car’s ad components often outlived its bodywork comp and chassis, and a booming business was c born supplying replacements for these. Today, Today kit cars often take the engine and chassis chass from a donor vehicle. In the case of the Burton, this is the iconic Citroën 2CV, B which was manufactured from 1949 until 1990, and chosen by the Göbel brothers because becau of the hundreds of thousands still to be found in Europe and because of its simple, simpl reliable mechanics. Without the backing of any kind of W engineering department, like you would engin normally find in large car companies, the norm brothers broth shaped new components out of wood. wood Dimitri tells of a neighbour who dropped dropp in as he was sawing a wooden prototype fender off the car. The proto neighbour couldn’t quite grasp that it was neigh made of wood. “When I think back to the first five years working on the car, all that I can remember is hours of sanding re prototype parts. People seem to think we proto have special machines which can
Getting started Kit cars are the automotive equivalent of flat-pack furniture. You receive a box of parts and an instruction manual or DVD, with step-by-step instructions. Follow these closely and you’ll end up with a car that has already been tested and approved for road use. Major mechanical parts such as the engine, gears and chassis (the skeleton that supports the vehicle’s bodywork) are normally taken from a donor vehicle.

DUTCH INNOVATION
“The kit car is nothing new – the first ones were sold in the USA at the turn of the 20th century” churn out new pieces, but it often starts with a simple image in my head that I then make out of whatever material I can find.” Dimitri wanted the proportions of a 1920s racing car, such as a Bugatti, where the front wheels protrude beyond the bonnet. Unfortunately, using the existing 2CV chassis didn’t allow this, so he worked with enlarged wheel arches to give the optical illusion that the wheels are further forward than they actually are. If you’re worried about your carbon footprint, kit cars using donor parts from old cars are quite environmentally friendly. For Burton, once the chassis and engine are removed from the donor Citroën 2CV, 95% of the remaining parts are sold via their spare parts business. With over 30% of the entire energy that a car uses during its lifetime being used in the manufacturing process, a Burton
already starts its life with an eco-friendly kick. And despite using an older engine, it’s lightweight with great aerodynamics, which means that the car actually achieves an A class energy rating – some modern hybrids still only achieve an F rating. And for those of us who still can’t shake off the environmental guilt trip caused by an afternoon of leisurely cruising around the countryside, the Burton brothers are working hard on producing what they call an “honest all-electric version” of the vehicle in the very near future. Traditionalists might believe that classic motoring needs the hum of an engine and the deep throb of an exhaust, but the Göbel brothers believe an electric motor concealed by the classic lines of the Burton will offer a unique experience, which Iwan likens to sailing: “It will be silent, clean motoring that allows you to glide through nature absorbing the sounds of the birds and the rustle of the leaves in the trees.” If you haven’t got the 160 hours needed to build the car yourself, they’re also available ready for the road, starting at just €11,000. The only work you’ll have to do involves choosing from the thousands of options available – colours, windscreens, wheels and materials. This ensures no two Burtons are exactly the same. But if you’re not quite ready to commit your time and money, you can also just rent one for the day. www.burtoncar.com

In Maurits Escher’s weird world, three-dimensional reality is turned upside down. Two people can move side by side in the same direction, yet one is going downstairs and the other upstairs. An atheist, he drew monks endlessly climbing a staircase that chases its own tail and thus never ends. Impossible? Look at his watermill that, at first glance, looks plausible but a second look reveals it is incompatible with all physical, geometric and gravitational laws. Although Escher looked upon himself as neither an artist nor a scientist – “All artists are fakes,” he once claimed – he was in fact a unique mixture of both. Without realising the scientific significance of what he was doing, his craft illustrated abstract notions that scientists and mathematicians had been puzzling over for years. The appeal of Escher’s work is unprecedented in its diversity. He was a conservative gentleman with a tidy beard and workmanlike hands, and he created his art from his studio overlooking a sleepy garden in the suburb of Baarn, The Netherlands. Escher just could not understand why rock groups all over the world were plastering their albums with his prints and why his work appealed equally to psychedelics, crystallographers, engineers, composers, mathematicians and children. It baffled him. But he was never side-tracked. Most art critics found his work “too cerebral to be real art”. But the aloof Escher couldn’t care less about critics. He lived in a visual world beyond their reach. He was a print maker in the old sense. With his bone spoon (an ancient Japanese method), he created, ran off and sold his own editions, mostly woodcuts, without middlemen. His instruments – gouges and chisels – were hung tidily together in a cupboard. He placed his right shoulder to the light to engrave and draw, as he was a left-handed craftsman and a right-handed writer.
That’s impossible Sir Roger Penrose, Professor of Mathematics at Oxford University, caught his first glimpse of Escher in the 1950s. “I was attending a congress in Amsterdam and went along to see an exhibition of Escher’s work. I‘d never seen anything like it,” he says. “When I got back to England, I came up with an impossible triangle, which can exist in three parts but not as a whole. My thoughts on the subject were published in the British Journal Regular Division of the Plane Drawing #21 (1938); ink and pencil watercolour
of Psychology, crediting Escher, of course. I drew the triangle for fun and to confuse, but it illustrates an important point – non-integrability.” Escher used the triangle idea three times in constructing Waterfall and for the staircase in Ascending and Descending. It was a paradox in itself that Escher said he didn’t understand mathematical thinking. “It doesn’t surprise me that Escher was bad at maths at school. Teaching of maths in many cases doesn’t reveal a person’s latent ability. Einstein was very bad at maths too.”

Virtual Escher When Escher was shown examples of early computer animation back in 1964, 4, he said that he felt he had been born before his time. Today, Eschers can be found on over 60,000 websites and his is work is a source of inspiration for a new ew generation of computer graphic artists s who are digitally exploring the complex ex world he created. Foremost among them em is Dennis Ketelaars. “When I first saw Escher’s Tetrahedral Planetoid (a woodcut made in 1954), I was drawn to o recreate it on my computer, which took k me four months,” he says. The resulting g 3-D Navigator won Ketelaars the Miglia a Graphic Art Award in Cannes. “Had Escher her been living today, he would almost certainly have been working his ideas out digitally,” says Ketelaars. The impossible is still there to explore.
Development II (1939); woodcut in brown, brown grey-green and black and printed from three blocks
Seventy-three when he died, Escher was born in 1898 into an affluent family in Leeuwarden, the capital of Friesland. His father was a civil engineer. As a boy, he loved to draw and was encouraged by a teacher to make linoleum cuts. In his youth he was strictly a representational artist, and travelling through Italy in 1922, he became fascinated by the geometric structures found in nature and architecture. In Ravello he met his future wife, Jetta Umiker, daughter of a silk manufacturer who had escaped from Russia to Switzerland during the revolution of 1917. After their marriage in 1924, the couple settled in Rome, where they stayed until 1935. During these 11 years, Escher travelled throughout Italy, visiting hill villages, like Castrovalva in the Abruzzi, and southern coastal villages, like Positano and Atrani on the coast of Amalfi. There, and in Sicily and Corsica, Escher recorded impressions that he would later transform into prints during the winter at his home in Rome.

The rise of fascism in the 1930s prompted the Escher family to return to The Netherlands, which they did in 1941. En route, he visited the Alhambra fortress in Granada, Spain. It was here that an obsession began to take hold of him. The Moors’ interlocking designs struck chords in Escher’s geometricallysensitive brain. He began copying mosaics from the walls and floors. He saw that these designs could, in principal, continue to infinity. Escher took up the theme and carried it further, using animals, plants and people. He drifted into an inscrutable world of his own creation, deserting all the known laws of perspective. From 1941 until his death in 1972, Escher lived quietly with his wife and two sons in Baarn. He no longer drew the world around him but instead brought to life the intriguing and often macabre inventions of his mind. As Escher retreated, or advanced, further into himself, his work became more and more complex. For instance,

Mick and Maurits Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones was one of Maurits Escher’s biggest fans. But the feeling wasn’t mutual. On New Year’s Day, 1969, a lengthy correspondence began between Jagger, from the Stones’ office in London and Escher in Baarn. Jagger wanted to use an Escher work for the cover of an upcoming Stones’ LP. The letter was lengthy, very complimentary to Escher and polite. Jagger said he found Escher’s work “incredible”. “…Would you please consider either designing a ‘picture’ for it …the optical illusion idea very much appeals to me... You might even like to do a long one like Metamorphosis, which we could then reproduce as a folding-out sleeve… Naturally, both you and your publishers would get full credits on the sleeve, and we could negotiate a fee on hearing of your decision to do it…” It was signed: Above: Tetrahedral Planetoid (1954); woodcut printed from two blocks Below and throughout the feature: Metamorphosis III (1967-1968); woodcut

Viktor & Rolf The fashion designers Whether they are designing a range of clothes for high-street chain H&M, or creating extravagant costumes for a German opera production, one thing is certain: the global fashion superstars Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren are always leaps and bounds ahead when it comes style. According to the dynamic duo, they don’t actually work as a team but as one designer: “We are one-minded. We don’t divide our work, we like people to think of us as one.” It goes some way to explaining their trademark similar looks, which have been an important part of their image since their early days at the Arnhem Academy of Art and Design. But with so many projects on the go at any one time, what is their favourite part of the creative process? “It has to be the light bulb moment, which is the time at the beginning of something when you just have a blank page. It all starts with just one great idea, and the rest is all about realising the idea and making it happen.” V&R’s latest creation is a new perfume, Eau Mega, which began with the name and took them three years to develop. They describe it as being “extravagant and glamorous. It’s full of freshness and is larger than life.” Along the lines of all of their other work, it’s about escape and transformation, of which V&R are the masters. www.viktor-rolf.com LOOKS Holland Herald

Leyp The sneaker freaks From their Rottterdam studio, project manager Fernon Lagenhorst, illustrator Darrin Umboh and graphic designer Nick Kailola are the Leyp Creative Collective. Leyp started humbly with a sneaker customising website in 2004, but since then the business has expanded, and the three friends now run a full design studio. Their work incorporates anything from creating T-shirts, custom kicks, websites, flyers and illustration work. Nick says: “I became involved in sneaker customising as it gave me an outlet to combine the things I like: sneakers, design and arts and crafts. In Dutch we call that knutselen. It also gave me a unique product, and this aspect made it fit perfectly into what modern society is looking for: personalised, individual products.” Leyp customise sneakers especially for their clients, but their funky creations can also be bought off the shelf. Either way, with their designs, you’ll always have something original on your feet. ww.leyp.com

Marlies Dekkers The underwear designer With stores in cities such as Paris, Cologne, Bangkok and throughout The Netherlands, Marlies Dekkers’ Undressed label is at the cuttingedge of underwear design. Her creations are not the typical romantic ribbon and lace, but are made up of lines, layers and subtle cut-outs in unexpected places. “A lot of lingerie these days is designed from a man’s point of view, and is aimed at what he finds attractive and sexy. I design from a feminine point of view. My dream has always been to design lingerie in which women can feel beautiful and seductive, but at the same time powerful and independent.” She adds: “When it comes to looks, I believe we should all ‘dare to be’. Dare to be yourself, dare to explore, dare to dream. My whole company follows this philosophy and it is a great pleasure to see how it pays off.” www.marliesdekkers.nl

Fokke de Jong The suit supplier Since the first Suitsupply store opened in the Schiphol area in the year 2000, entrepreneur Fokke de Jong’s business has been a great success. Suitsupply now has 30 stores, including two in London, one of which is on the corner of Savile Row, a street famous for its men’s bespoke tailoring and for being a notoriously difficult place to set up shop. Fokke explains his secret: “Our customers are quality conscious. They know about fit and styling and are quite often willing to make interesting choices instead of going for the obvious. At Suitsupply we control everything, from manufacturing to running the stores. We only use the best Italian fabrics – we have 600 to choose from – and we use traditional tailoring to make the perfect suit, all for a much better price than you would pay in normal high-end stores.” www.suitsupply.com

Hester van Eeghen The leather designer Hester van Eeghen fell in love with leather after discovering a shop in Amsterdam’s red-light district that sold it by the ounce. “I was studying Dutch literature and law at the time, but I broke my foot and was wheelchair-bound, so I started designing handbags as it was something I could do without moving around too much.” She opened her first handbag store in Amsterdam in 1987; this was followed by a shoe store in 2001. Hester is inspired by a number of things: “I like architecture, particularly Bauhaus, and painters, such as Sonia Delaunay whose colours I love, but I’m also inspired by the many objects I collect from antique markets during my travels.” Hester says: “The looks for this season are daring colours like pink and yellow, along with simplicity in shape.” www.hestervaneeghen.com

Fjord focus Norway’s western fjords feature some of the world’s most spectacular views, with every peak battling to offer a more startling panorama WORDS: MATT FARQUHARSON PHOTOS: EIVIND SENNESET
An axe-wielding 75-year-old has brought 14 people to a halt halfway up a blue glacier. “Photo!” she shouts, as she plants her pick in the ice. She wobbles on her crampons, steadies herself, and snaps away. Then she makes a sound like a little girl who has just been given a pony. It’s a kind of squealed “ooh” that rises in pitch for several seconds and ends in a coquettish giggle, accompanied by a rapid hand clap. The rest of the group, all tied together with a line of rope and none less
than 20 years her junior, know the scene will be repeated soon, just as it has been all the way up. But any excuse to look around is welcomed. Steep mountains rear up on either side and, down below, the ice yields to a lake of luminous greens and blues. This is the Nigardsbreen glacier in Jostedal National Park, western Norway, where a 50-metre deep, 2,000-year-old ice wave tumbles down a mountain. From a distance it has a bluegrey hue, but the brilliance of its colours and crevices is best LOOKS Holland Herald

experienced up close. Wherever there is a break in the top layer of ice, a brilliant iridescent blue shines through. “It’s quite special, the ice,” says Siri Bente Haugen, a diminutive glacier guide with a relentless positivity in her face. “And it’s beautiful, seriously beautiful.” She comes from a town 20 minutes away, and when she works she makes the two-hour hike to the top twice a day. “From day to day, glaciers change a little bit,” she says, “so next weekend I will see something new – maybe a new tunnel or a new crack.”
Down at the bottom, Friegard, the 75-year-old happy snapper explains her excitement in stuttering English. “I came from Germany to see this – I wanted to see it while I still could. It’s just like it was in my head.” Her cheeks are flushed, but she has the same childlike grin and smiling eyes that everyone who comes off the ice seems to have. It’s a look that appears permanently etched in the faces of those who work on the glacier. A 40-minute drive away is Marifjøra, where hotel owner Bård Huseby explains why his part of the world is so special. “Last year,” he says, “DN [a Norwegian newspaper] said this was the best place to live. Norway regularly comes top of lists of the best countries to live in, so…” A contented smile explains the rest. He is on the wooden veranda of his hotel, which borders the waters of the Sognefjord, and a sheer mountain face laced with stringy white waterfalls. It’s hard to disagree with him.
Filmmakers call it ‘the magic hour’, though it only tends to last about 40 minutes. It is that period at the end of the day when the sun darkens and envelops the world in a rich, golden glow. Careful use of it often leads to cinematography Oscars. In western Norway between April and October, ‘the magic 36

hour’ lasts all evening. The sun doesn’t really set, but dips just below the horizon at midnight for a quick peek at Antarctica. And in the hours before it goes, everything is washed in a golden light before fi nally shifting to a bright orange, then a dark copper and fi nishing with a blast of candyfloss pink. This is a part of the planet that possibly looks more wonderful than anywhere else and it even comes with a carefully considered colour scheme.
Here, ‘sightseeing’ is really all that can be done. It doesn’t involve ruins or castles or galleries, but is an activity to be taken literally – every peak climbed or corner turned reveals a new feast for the eyes. The visual treats begin in the city of Bergen. Look out from the central square and the red roofs and white walls of traditional wooden homes push towering pines back up imperious mountains. A stroll in the steep and narrow streets around the Mariakirken shows chocolate-box homes clinging together on unlikely perches. But perhaps the best views in the city are enclosed, down in Bryggen, the town’s photogenic port and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some of the wooden houses date back to the 15th century, and they slump against each other like drunks at a bar. Wherever an alley runs between them, the roofs lean in and almost meet overhead. It’s like walking through a carefully constructed, unlit bonfire. Tourists tiptoe around, worried that a wild swing of the camera might knock a building over. But Bergen has its peaks too, and for a complete panorama there is Flørien station, a funicular that climbs 320 metres at a 26° angle to a view over icy blue waters, surging green mountains, and the town itself. It’s best observed in the early evening, when the light is most golden.

Guiding lights The sheer mountains that rear up around most fjords mean that some places are only accessible to boats and goats. To view fjord life up close, get yourself a fjord escort (not to be confused with a Ford Escort), and take to the water. Voss is another spot that is worth a visit. And the road there is painted with encouragement. ‘Come on!’ it says on one hairpin bend, ‘nearly there’ it cajoles on another. The steep climb up Skjervet presents the final challenge in a bicycle race from Bergen to Voss, which the very best can complete in four hours – about the same time as a leisurely drive with photo stops. Up here, even in the height of summer, snow lingers by the side of the road. It may be why Voss has become known for extreme sports – the terrain doesn’t allow you to do any other sort. Most of these involve throwing yourself down Nanguren, a mountain that rears up from Voss town. “It takes five minutes to get up, and ten to get down,” says a Danish paraglider waiting for the rickety Hangursbanen cable car. “Two if you zigzag”, smiles his accomplice, who perches his cigarette in his mouth to motion closing the canopy and sharply dropping down. Their launch point is a flat spot next to the top of the cable car wire. It is silent but for the tinkle of sheep bells, the tweet of birds, and the careful unwrapping of canopies. In winter they ski down here, but in summer it’s mountain bikes, mountain boards (a kind of off-road skateboard) and paragliding.

Sight and sound Edvard Grieg was a tiny man who was big on views. The 1.6-metre composer loved the vantage point from his summer house outside Bergen. So much so that when he died he was buried in the cliff face below it, leaving him to ponder the view over Nordås Bay for all eternity. It is a scene that could inspire even the most tone-deaf to rustle up a concerto or two. And for those CLOCKWISE FROM TOP RIGHT: One of three caves within the Lærdal tunnel, the world’s longest road tunnel at 24.5 kilometres; A king crab stall at the Bergen fish market; Boats in the Sognefjord seen from the small village of Marifjøra

“You just hike into nature, and then you can camp anywhere you want” less adventurous can just take in the view before swinging back down in the cable car.
The Costa Luminosa is 16 decks and 92,000 tons of thought-free touring. It is a cruise ship that stands taller than all but the grandest buildings in Norway. But from Blåskavlen, 800 metres above the waters of the magnificent Songefjord, it looks like a Tic Tac in a bathtub. It will stop in Flåm for a few hours and disgorge its guests for a quick trip up the Flåm railway, and then leave again before sunset. This, reckons local brewery owner Evan Lewis, is a mistake. “The shame is that most tourists that see Flåm arrive on the train and have about half an hour to get on the boat, or vice versa. The only thing they get is ‘wow, beautiful mountains, now we have to go’.” Voss native Ole Kristian Årmot agrees. “There are lots and lots of small villages around – places like that are really special, with lots of culture and views. There are no tourists, so

if you’ve got a tent or a camper you can really find some peaceful places to chill out. You just hike into nature, and then you can camp anywhere you want.” But the main attraction of Flåm remains its railway. This single-gauge line tackles one of the steepest inclines in the world, rearing up 866 metres of the most awe-inspiring scenery. Windows steam and clear as passengers stare in open-mouthed wonder at the dramatic nature before them. A few moments from the top is the Kjosfossen waterfall, with its viewing platform drenched in a fine, fresh mist. However, the grandest part of this journey is the descent. Some walk the 22-kilometre track, and some cycle. Either way, it’s a gentle decline through meadows, waterfalls, rushing rivers and cooling forest, where you sip water from a stream if you’re thirsty and lay in wild flowers if you’re tired. In a country whose peaks demand to be scaled for their views, one of the best sights is to be found on the way down.

Whey out Just outside Undredal, a village of 80 people and 500 goats, farmer Pascale Baudonnel is ushering her freshly milked stock to the field and explaining the village’s fight to continue selling unpasteurised products to the EU. “If you pasteurise, you cut the umbilical cord to the land,” she explains. “When you use milk unpasteurised, the cheese is a pastiche of the land.” Originally from France, Baudonnel has lived in Undredal for 30 years. She is one of three farmers here who combine their stock to produce Norwegian brown cheese. It is a product made from curd, rather than whey (which is used for most cheese), and sweetened with 10% cow cream. The result is a cheese with a hint of caramel. Whatever the difficulties of the EU’s recent decision to try and ban unpasteurised cheeses, she feels blessed. “I think most people who are born here don’t see it like me,” she says. “They see the land as steep, cold, no sun – a hard life. But every day I think I am living in the most beautiful place in the world.”

The winner KIRANGA VILLAGE, UGANDA “I am an artist and teacher and I had the opportunity to visit and live in Kiranga for a few weeks. Children in the village have no access to secondary education, but this photo was taken on the day of the opening of The Tabbitha National School, which is a community project. I thought the most lasting gift I could take was teaching aids, so most of my baggage was books and papers. The locals were hugely grateful and organised a big meeting to celebrate. Several hundred people were gathered under the trees in front of the school. The opening speeches had just begun when a torrent of rain began to fall, and everyone crowded into the classrooms for shelter where I took this photo. For me, it recalls the dignity, grace and love I received from the people of Kiranga Village.” Laura Williams, United Kingdom

I saw these two kids who were just happy in their own world, running from side to side through the water, and I thought it was a magic moment. It’s a colour photo but, with the silhouettes and the lighting, it’s as if it were taken in black and white.” Paulo Amorim, Portugal
BIRMINGHAM, UNITED KINGDOM “I was studying and living in England at the time I took this photo. Very early one Saturday morning, I decided to go into the city to take photos, as the light is great at that time. I went to Birmingham by train and spent an hour walking around this building. This spacey and quite surreal image is actually the outside of the Bullring shopping centre. It is the roof of the Selfridges store and is one of my favourite buildings, as the modern architecture is really amazing.” Sophie den Heijer, The Netherlands

FACIAL FITNESS
Get the look Can you really get a non-surgical facelift? Beauty guru Eva Fraser believes it’s possible; she says that by retraining the muscles in your face they can become firmer and stronger. Here are three of her top Facial Fitness exercises, revealed exclusively for Holland Herald readers. Time to get stretching Upper cheek lift Press your back teeth lightly together. Place side of index fingers lightly along laugh lines. Slowly lift upper cheek muscles in direction of arrows in six steps – like going up a very steep ladder. Hold for a count of six still feeling the lift. Return slowly in six steps. Repeat once more. All moverments are from finger touch.
Lower face lift Hold firmly on collarbone with finger pads. Stretch chin upwards so that front of neck is held taut – keep this position.
Eyelid exercise
Bring jaw slightly forward. Now place lower lip over top lip.
Look straight ahead, and into the mirror if possible, throughout this exercise.
Hold this position and smile out towards top of ears, feeling an upward and backward stretch over jaw line.
Raise eyebrows, curve index fingers under eyebrows and hold against the bone.
Repeat once more.
Close lids and feel a gentle downward stretch from finger hold. Hold for a count of ten then release slowly.
Eva Fraser was born in 1928 and and discovered her Facial Fitness technique while in her fifties. She opened her London clinic in 1990. Lessons take place with a personal instructor and the course consists of four lessons, each lasting 1.5 hours; +44 20 79376616. www.evafraser.com

KLM HARTMAN QUARTERLY
Looks aren’t everything When you hear the name KLM, the chances are you’ll see us too - one of our aircraft, our uniform, our logo, a brochure, even a flight ticket or a KLM check-in desk. The name KLM immediately brings to mind a variety of images, and the one thing they all have in common is the globally trusted ‘KLM blue’. Since its beginnings on October 7, 1919, KLM has always used a blue accent, but the foundations for our recognisable ‘look’ were only established in the 1960s. Despite this being fine tuned and tweaked over the decades, KLM has clearly remained KLM. In the meantime, ‘KLM blue’ has become so recognisable that seeing just a small amount of it has become enough to trigger instant awareness. Believe me, there are many who are envious of the fact that we had enough foresight to take ownership of this sky-blue colour, at such an early stage in the history of aviation. Blue stands for, above all, trustworthiness and structure. It has a calming effect and aids concentration - vital for our industry. The success of our branding doesn’t mean that we are letting it take a back seat. Far from it. We live in a rapidly changing world and KLM is a modern organisation that is well aware that it has

to change with the times. Our passengers place great value on our trusted reputation and reliability, but they also expect innovation and a modern image. And that means getting a facelift every now and then. We recently introduced a new house style and very shortly you’ll see a new uniform being worn by 11,000 female colleagues. Created by the wellknown Dutch designer Mart Visser, this is our tenth uniform restyle. As previously done with our MD-11s, we’re also focusing considerable energy
on retrofitting the Economy Class of our Boeing 747-400s with new seats and personal in-flight entertainment systems. But for me personally, the arrival of a new aircraft, like our recent new fuel-efficient Embraers, is a real high point. There’s nothing more satisfying than a brand new aircraft on its maiden voyage, freshly sprayed in the KLM colours. I’ve only been talking about our ‘look’. But looks aren’t everything. If comfort was missing from our shiny blue aircraft, if the welcoming smile of our personnel wasn’t backed up by customer service, and if our blue tickets weren’t available for a sharp and competitive price, then our customers wouldn’t be fooled. And, believe me, we’re fully aware of this. Looks are important, but in the end it’s about the complete package.

KLM NEWS “Making the journey a little bit easier...”
Increased efficiency, reduced CO2 emissions INCREASED CONVENIENCE AT SCHIPHOL
Time-saving drop-off Customers’ core needs are at the heart of all innovations introduced by KLM Passenger Services. That’s why, in Departure Hall 2 at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, passengers can now take advantage of five KLM SelfService Baggage Drop-Off Points to quickly and efficiently check in up to two pieces of baggage. The facility can also be used by passengers checking onto connecting flights. This unique pilot programme will be used to test the new facilities until early 2010.
As part of its ongoing fleet renewal programme, KLM has taken delivery of a fourth Boeing 777-300ER. This state-of-the-art aircraft is equipped with ‘completely lie-flat’ sleeper seats in World Business Class and personal on-demand entertainment systems with adjustable widescreen LCD displays in Economy
Class. Using around 20% less fuel than similar-sized aircraft, it will also contribute to KLM’s long-term aim of achieving C02-neutral status. This aircraft is named National Park Amboseli to help raise awareness for the park, part of the Amboseli ecosystem located in Kenya. Further information: www.kws.org

MORE WAYS TO SELECT YOUR SEAT
For some passengers it’s 4E on a B747, for others, seat 1A on a B777. Whatever your preference, passengers on intercontinental flights can now select their seat from 90 days before departure, 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Whether you booked online or at a travel agent, you can now select or change your seat via Manage My Booking at www.klm.com Or perhaps it’s a special occasion and you want to treat yourself or a loved one? A limited number of Economy Class
seats, known as preferred seats, offer additional benefits such as extra legroom or a location in a row with just two seats. For a small supplement, these preferred seats can be reserved online from 30 hours before departure (24 for the USA) or using the kiosks in the departure and transfer halls at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. These seats are free of charge to Flying Blue Platinum and Gold Elite Plus members. For detailed information about preferred seating, visit www.klm.com Holland Herald
