That First Day
I
t was a typical summer day in Oklahoma. It was warm, sunny and of course, windy. But there was something special about this day. This was the day I and my special someone were moving in to our new home together. From all the excited conversations and dreams about how spending the rest of our lives together were going to be so awesome, I was so ready to have the love of my life under the same roof. When that day happened, I knew it was going to be magical. No longer would we have to say goodbye and go to our respective homes. No longer would I have to pine for him for a whole week until I got to see him again on the weekend. When that day arrives, I would be able to tell him my innermost secrets and feelings directly and not through an email, text or phone call (although, those calls into the middle of the night were magical).

Of course we would each have our own sinks and things like that; but I forgot about his computer. OMG, I never even thought about it. I just assumed we would use my computer and desk space. It never occurred to me that this was personal space and he would need his own desk for his own computer. Never thinking he may not want to use my computer and desk because this was my personal space. Then came other miscellaneous parts of life, like cd’s and food items we each liked (or didn’t like). How the dishwasher was to be stacked. The fact there would be his shampoo and my shampoo never even crossed my mind. I was scared and suddenly felt I was walking on eggshells in my own life, in my dream home with the person of my dreams. What happened to all the magic and fairytale feelings? I even asked myself “did I make a mistake?”

So after all the planning, packing and excruciating waiting that seemed as if it would never end; feeling like a child waiting Christmas Eve for Santa to finally arrive…. the day came. And it was every bit as magical and exciting and thrilling as I thought it would be….even more now that it was no longer just a dream. It was a reality. Yes, it was a reality. And with that reality came some stark surprises. Through all the dreaming and planning, it never really occurred to me that we would be blending two people’s idiosyncrasies, habits and of course, stuff. We were each going to need our own space for our own things. We each had our own way of living and now that has to be changed. I really wasn’t prepared for that part of the reality. No one ever told me that living together will take getting used to and require a great deal of patience and love as these two lives who have been apart, now are living as one. I remember that it all started with a computer. In planning for moving into our dream life together, I made sure that there would be space in the closet, drawers in the dresser and a pristine spot for his toothbrush.
The answer was no. The key to all of this fear and angst was to let each other know what we were feeling. It turns out he was just as worried about me not having my space as I was worried about him not feeling he had his space. With time, patience and love, we learned how to live together and make space for each other. Taking spiritual nourishment from the energy we gave one another. Realizing that all the little habits and idiosyncrasies were little more than a drop of water in the vast ocean of our new life together our new home and the love we shared. But I am here to tell you, 14 years later, that life with my lover and best friend has been a wonderful gift from God. I cannot imagine my life without him and don’t ever want to. We both share our home, we both still have individual computers and we both have our little household islands that we have accepted responsibility for. But most of all, we both have the love we started with and the magic of being able to tell my love my innermost secrets and feelings, face to face. This life is wonderful. Talking it out, communicating with one another was and is the answer to all of our problems. Don’t be afraid to have a spirited debate and express your feelings. Remember to be kind to one another and not forget that you are both scared. I can tell you that we still don’t always agree and I still take over the house….but rarely do I stack the dishwasher. :)

Should I Film My Wedding? By J.C. Scott
have no regrets. I do however often hear brides tell me after the fact that they wished they had filmed their wedding. Good wedding films (videography) aren’t cheap to be certain. Good filmmakers like good photographers start around $1500 with the great ones charging upwards of $2500 plus. But just as with a great photographer, a great deal of work and behind the scenes time goes into every wedding film. Just equipment alone, especially high definition gear is expensive. Whether the videographer/ filmmaker is using DSLR (digital single lens reflex) cameras or traditional video cameras, literally thousands of dollars are invested in the filmmaker’s tools to get the shots. These aren’t cameras you often get asked the question: “Why have my wedding just go get at the local department store. These are filmed (videotaped)?” Which often leads to more serious tools that deliver superior quality. But that is just rhetorical questions like: “who’s going to want to watch the cameras. riginally meeting in high school, Jennifer and Anthony met during their 10th grade English History classes. While they didn’t date in high school, fate would take the upper hand when they would run into each other several years later as Anthony came to his dentist appointment, where at the time, Jennifer was working. Jennifer remembered Anthony and became excited seeing his name on the schedule. The excitement hit its zenith when they exchanged information and he asked her out on their first date. The Holidays are a magical time and at the Philbrook Museum the magic of the season fills the air as the garden comes alive with lights. It was here, in this magical place, in the iconic gazebo, next to the Christmas tree that Anthony would kneel down and ask that magical question. Perhaps it wasn’t a total surprise as Jennifer “knew he was up to something.” “It wasn’t quite cold outside and he was wearing his heavy coat trying to hide the ring box.” “Once he proposed, he was so relieved to be able to take his coat off.” Inspiration comes from many places, for Jennifer, it was the relationship with Anthony that was the true heart of the wedding. Focusing on small details that added sentimental touches, a wedding was created that was simple and elegant. It was important to Jennifer that Anthony was excited about the wedding’s elements. “I didn’t want the wedding to just be what the bride wanted.” Combining their varying interests, they successfully personalized their wedding and made it even more special to them. For instance, Anthony is an Atlanta Braves fan; actually it is his favorite team. His cuff links were made from an actual baseball used in one of the games. game the couple had attended. Paper airplanes were used because Anthony is a pilot. A photograph on the bride’s bouquet and the bride’s father’s boutonniere were of Jennifer’s late mother. It was touches like this that made this wedding very personal.
Not having to worry about anything let the couple focus their time and energies on each other along with the dear friends and family that came to celebrate. “It was so wonderful to see everything come together and all of our planning come together so perfectly.”
When this couple looked at Vesica Piscis, they knew this was the place for them. “We both fell in love with the venue and booked it that day. We knew it was going to be the place for our wedding day.” “Our favorite part of the wedding was just being able to enjoy the day and celebrate getting married.”
In the end Jennifer and Anthony pulled together a wedding that was deeply personal and sentimental. A simple elegance sprinkled with a bit of tradition and a few modern touches and in Jennifer’s own words, “The entire day was perfect.”

O
ne of the first things that the bride to be will be looking for is a photographer. Good photographers get booked as much as a year plus in advance so the task can seem daunting. The task can be made easier, and you can have the photographs of your dreams by answering a simple question. Of the many questions that pop up frequently in a brides mind when looking at wedding photography, the question of photography style most often tops the list. Is style really that important? You bet it is. You wouldn’t purchase a wedding dress that wasn’t your style would you? So it should be with your photographer. The more appropriate question though is “what’s my style?” No matter how good or experienced a photographer is, if your style, I mean what you dreamed your photographs would look like, clashes with the photographer’s style….you are apt to be disappointed. It will not matter how beautiful the pictures are, if your style is contemporary and your photographer is traditional….well you get the idea. So let’s take a look at style; your style, photographically speaking. In Oklahoma you will find something you won’t find in many places. If you hadn’t noticed, a ton of America’s top notch talent has come right from the heart of the nation. Oklahoma’s got talent to spare and in photographers this is no exception. Every imaginable style is represented by some incredibly talented people that live to catch that sparkling moment, for you to keep forever. There are many sub-categories of styles but we will stick with a few basic styles that, as a wedding photographer, have been seen from brides I have worked with over the years. These are photojournalistic,
wedding photojournalistic, lifestyle and traditional styles. Photojournalistic: This style is discreet and allows the photographer the greatest freedom. Photographers that work exclusively in this style do very few formals and create portraits from the moments as they happen. The décor details will be minimally documented with the main thrust of the coverage turned toward the people of the event. Very little to no posing goes on and this style can be very poignant, catching moments as they unfold. Occasional flash may be used if necessary but primarily ambient or natural light is used. Wedding Photojournalistic: Many wedding photographers fall into this category. This style tends to blend a very little bit of natural posing, creating scenarios to capture natural moments but primarily seeks out moments to tell the story of the day. This type of photographer is still very discreet. Formals often will be done but in a more expedient fashion. This type of photographer will also catch details such as the rings, cake and centerpieces in a way that gives them a life of their own. For the most part, you should not feel the presence of the photographer or there should be little injection of the photographer into your day, letting it unfold naturally. Flash may be used but natural or ambient light is preferred. Lifestyle: Many photographers fall into this category as well. More posing is involved but done in such a way as to look natural, not contrived. This style tends to focus more on the interactions between the couple and tends to gloss over the details of the event and focus much more on the moments as they happen. The use of external lighting may be used more to create certain moods or effects. (cont. next page)

Traditional: Sometimes this word strikes fear in the contemporary bride. This type of photographer will craft beautiful heirloom quality portraits of the couple and their family. This photographer will be more heavily involved with the wedding party and families. Some details will be documented but not heavily. The images of Prince William and Kate Middleton would fall into this category. This type of photographer will use external lighting heavily if not exclusively to manipulate the environment. You can find out a photographer’s style easily by visiting their websites and viewing their ads in publications such as this magazine. Then give them a call and see the work in person and make sure you both are a good fit. You will find that your search for the photographer to capture the day of your dreams will be a much simpler task and you will be sweetly rewarded when you answer the question: “What’s my style?”

t is perfectly natural, when planning your wedding, to think about the honeymoon. After all, this is your first real time together in a long while where you won’t be planning your wedding. But all too often, the honeymoon trip gets planned, the wedding happens and more often than not, important details get left behind that can create some serious, unnecessary stress. Michelle with Michelle’s Destinations Unlimited in Norman, Oklahoma shared these common honeymoon mistakes that if planned for, will help make your honeymoon everything you hoped it would be. Departing too early after the wedding. While getting an early start on your honeymoon might sound good in theory, keep in mind that especially if you have an evening wedding, you may not be in the best shape to travel after a night of partying; or worse, you could oversleep and miss your flight all together. Be sure to build in time to get some sleep after the wedding so you can be fresh and ready for this awesome trip together. Compromising on your destination. Yes, marriage will have lots of compromise, but perhaps your honeymoon is a place to splurge. With careful planning, you can have the honeymoon of your dreams at the destination of a lifetime. Your travel agent can help you find ways to stretch your budget and get the most of your honeymoon dollars. Booking too late. Speaking of budgets, booking your trip too late can be costly. In addition, you may find that the place you wanted to go is not available or your options are limited. For the best rates and options, start planning your honeymoon at least 9 months in advance. Your travel agent will tell you if it is best to wait to book the trip.
Forgetting your passport. One of the worst feelings is getting to the airport and realizing that you have forgotten your passport. Be sure you have all of your travel documents in a safe and easy to remember place, ready to go for your trip. Also make certain, well in advance, that your passport is up to date and valid, if required, for your destination. Don’t forget to check to see if you need a visa for your destination as well. Not taking advantage of the resort or area’s romantic amenities. Check out the activities and amenities that your resort may have to offer. From candlelight dining to couples massages, be sure to make the most of your honeymoon together. Forgetting your toothbrush. Well there is more to it than that, but you get the idea. Being prepared contributes to better well being and calm; so put together a list of items you plan to take. Starting your packing early will help avoid being rushed which opens up opportunities of forgetting important personal items and/or clothing. Remembering these simple tips will help you remain calm and help you enjoy your honeymoon by keeping unnecessary stress at bay.
Booking your tickets under the wrong name. Just because you say “I Do” your name doesn’t magically change. T
here are so many wonderful parts to creating an entire wedding experience. From that first moment when you find the perfect dress to choosing the linens and floral design; truly a great deal goes into creating a look for this once in a lifetime event. But even in today’s world, with all the television coverage about weddings and planning, one very important character often gets left out of the day and décor. That character is lighting. As a wedding photographer, to me, good lighting is almost a religion and bad lighting is nigh yonder to treason. I have experienced all kinds of lighting situations and it amazes me how often this most important and seemingly obvious detail is overlooked. To me, light is a living thing; just as alive, if not more so than those beautiful floral centerpieces. Well thought out and designed lighting will take a drab room to fab faster than you can blink your eyes and your floral designer/wedding planner will love you for it. Did you ever wonder why, in movies or on tv, weddings look so incredibly gorgeous? Simple, they were properly and tastefully (hopefully) lit. Lighting is a miracle solution that creates ambiance. It creates mood and feeling and adds another depth of expression to this incredible day or event.
Even the most expensive wedding has the potential of falling flat if it is not properly lit. While the sky is the limit on options and what you can spend, you don’t have to have a platinum budget to light up your night and make your wedding and reception look fabulous. The photographs below show the ballroom of the Northwest Expressway Marriott. This room looks awesome. The tables and décor are spectacular indeed…but something is missing. The lighting design wizards at Innovative Event Solutions (IES) transformed what was once a very flat and one dimensional situation into a spectacular multi-dimensional experience that totally set the mood and transformed the whole look and feel of the event. Some simple and cost effective solutions that can liven up any space are perimeter up-lighting. Another spot for lighting relates to the ceremony, say at the church or chapel. Remembering to keep certain lights on and at a level that works for both the ambiance and photography, will enhance the look and feel of the space AND your photographs. Don’t be afraid to tell the venue that you want to bring in lighting or light a certain way. Most reputable churches and venues that truly care about you and your day are more than happy to accommodate. You don’t have to accept the lighting “the way we always do it.” There are many avenues to finding sources for decorative lighting such as lighting and DJ companies. However, be sure they understand how to light effectively and look at photographs of their setups for a good understanding of what can be provided. This is where the men get separated from the boys as it were. Good lighting designs, by those who know how, make a room look incredible. The opposite can be true when the knowledge and experience just isn’t there. Just as good lighting enhances, bad lighting takes away. A good lighting design company has the resources and experience to take virtually any situation and make it spectacular. Nothing can replace experience. The experienced professional knows where and how to place lighting. They will also know most venues and what type of lighting and setup will do the best job, thereby providing you with best value for your lighting dollar. Lighting is definitely a living thing. love weddings. It’s a fact. Rarely does a girl get to show the world who she is in a more open and fashionable way. So much goes into planning how this day is going to look and feel. ^ Tips - The Value of Good P hotography Despite how easy Ashton Kutcher makes getting great wedding photographs look on those Nikon commercials, great photography doesn’t just happen because you aimed a camera and pressed the button. As with most things, it looks easy because it is actually hard and requires the photographer to actually know what they are doing. To quote from a 90’s movie, “It’s supposed to be hard. If it was easy, everyone would do it. It’s the hard that makes it great.” It seems all too often, that everyone tries. Most don’t make the cut and your wedding is not a time to experiment.

A wedding is full of surprises. Great photographs are created and crafted by those who have the right equipment and expertise to get those great images expediently and discreetly. In Oklahoma, you can expect a range from $1500 for a decent photographer to upwards of $3000 and up for truly great photographers. But check them out and make sure you see outdoor and indoor work. High pricing does not a great photographer make.

hen she was 19, Randi met Gavin through friends. 23 at the time, Gavin and his roommates were throwing a party and she decided to tag along with her friend Shawna. Several weeks later, Gavin invited Randi to his lake house over Memorial Day weekend with a few friends. “After that weekend, we officially started dating.” On Valentine’s Day, 2010, Gavin popped the question. The two had decided to exchange the gifts of love just before going out to dinner. “I suspected he had bought a ring because after all, we had been together for almost 4 years…so it was about time.” “He made me turn around and then pretended like he had bought a necklace. But when I turned around, he had the ring in his hand.” Randi’s dream was an outside wedding with Southern charm and a rustic feel; in an intimate setting focusing on their closest friends and family. Her dream would come true in the form of a delightful venue, Vive le Ranch, located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. When she and Gavin arrived to view the property, she “knew it was perfect with the rustic barn, towering trees, beautiful landscaping, and an adorable French inspired cottage.”
Looking back, Randi felt that she really wouldn’t change anything. “Pretty much everything went exactly as planned, and since I had planned it all, I knew what to expect.” Randi recalls that the look of the wedding was lovely and just as she had imagined it to be; saying their vows against a backdrop of a beautiful pond with swans gliding across its surface. After the ceremony, the newly minted couple drove over to the barn in Gavin’s grandfather’s 1930, black Model A for the reception. After dancing the night away, Randi & Gavin made their exit through a sea of sparklers as they made their get away. It was “a gorgeous ceremony and fun-filled reception. Everything was beautiful and special.” “But seeing Gavin’s face when I walked down the aisle was unexpected and my favorite part of the day.” “If I could recreate that moment a million times, I would.”

hile attending the University of Oklahoma in their freshmen year, Jessica and Parker had a chance meeting in the hall on the way to class with her friend. Jessica, who was tired and not particularly ready to meet anyone, felt embarrassed as she covered her “sleepy eyes,” reached her hand out to meet Parker and said “Hi, I’m Jessica and I’m really tired.” Jessica was not prepared to meet anyone, much less a “cute boy” who was destined to be the love of her life. As the college years passed, they would hang out with friends but it wasn’t until the winter of their junior year that a sad event would really unite them. Parker’s puppy died suddenly that winter. Living alone, Jessica was concerned for her friend and chose to find him a new puppy to keep him company. So one April day, the two drove up to pick up Toby, the new puppy. Parker says that “he wasn’t really ready for another puppy. But since Jessica was so interested in finding me a puppy, I thought it was a good excuse to spend time with her.” By the time their junior year ended, “we finally started dating, after three long years of flirting, and we still have Toby.” Parker, a fireman in Weatherford, had big plans for Jessica. On an August Friday evening, she and Parker’s sister were to have a girl’s night out. Parker was on duty that night and asked Jessica to stop by and say hello before the night began. Arriving at the station, Jessica saw that a huge ladder truck was out of its bay. When Jessica asked why, Parker told her “they were cleaning it so we have had some of the kids and family members to take pictures in front of it for the Christmas slide show.” Jessica was a little suspicious as to why Parker was so eager to take pictures, but she “bought into it.” Parker invited Jessica into the bucket, but she is afraid of heights, but did it anyway. “He’s so lucky I didn’t say no!” There, rising into the sky, she sees his sister and mother on the ground and she has her expensive camera. Still not really realizing what was happening, she began to “get a little curious.” Her thoughts were starting to race, but she kept telling herself “Jess, you are being silly. Parker is on duty right now, don’t even let your thoughts go there.” After posing for the last photo, she slowly turned around to find Parker down on one knee. In his hand was a “gorgeous ring nestled in a little red box. I was so shocked! I dropped to down on the floor of the bucket with him, astounded.” There, 80 feet off the ground, she said yes.

“I love lanterns and I love being creative.” Jessica always knew she wanted to do the décor for her wedding, herself, wanting it to be unique to her and her fiancé. Parker’s main request was for an outdoor location and the search began. After looking at a few places, and coming across a bit of stress, they came upon Rosebrook Vineyards and decided they had finally found the place to get married. Knowing that she wanted as many lanterns as possible at their wedding, Jessica and her soon to be mother-in-law created a rustic and natural décor, built around the lanterns and perfect for the venue. “Our wedding was elating.” “It was a beautiful and happy day.” “If I had it to do over again, I would have called Rosebrook in August, but I loved that all of our friends and family made the commitment to come celebrate the day with us.” “Of course, the BEST part is that I got to marry my best friend.”

he wedding cake is such an iconic part of the wedding and everyone gets excited about seeing it. But a gorgeous cake can begin to look a bit flat on a spartan table.

The cake table is to the wedding cake what the stage is to an actor. The setting can make or break the scene. So how can you liven up the stage so your wedding cake is the shining star you dreamed it to be?
The first place begin is with the table linen. Now don’t run out and buy a million yards of tulle. With a little bit of patience and planning, you will find a world of great ways to add a little flare and have fun with one of the wedding’s most iconic focal points. n this issue, we had the pleasure of welcoming Randy Fenoli from “Say Yes to the Dress and his new hit show, Randy to the Rescue, to Oklahoma. He was kind enough to sit down with us and share some insights into his career, his philosophy and his book. Here is part one of our exclusive conversation with Randy.

so many times before. But you know, a wedding dress, every single dress fits differently, it’s going to fall differently on you, it has different construction, whether it’s going to stay up or whether it’s poofy or whether it’s going to hang and you really have to try those dresses on to see which one is going to look the best on you. You know those girls have to kind of be walked through the process and working at the salon, I have a certain advantage of seeing lots of dresses on lots of different body types so it gives me a bit of an advantage. Also having been a designer, making every pattern for every dress that I designed, also I understand the construction and the materials used in the dress and how that’s going to affect the overall look of the dress..
the thing I was most afraid of is that the show would be filled with too much Randy. Oh you could never have too much Randy. No, it really can’t! It’s funny, because we had a wrap party with the crew at my house here in New York City, and we watched the first episode with the whole crew; and my gaffer, my lighting guy, looks up to me and says “you know, dude, what this show needs, the only thing it needs is, it needs more Randy.”

BLS: This is a very positive message in an all too often negative world. Do you find it difficult to spread the word as it were? RF: Well, first let me say, thank you. I am glad you recognized that because that was actually one of the very first slides in the presentation that we had when we pitched “Randy To The Rescue” to TLC. That there is so much negativity in the world that there needs to be a positive, a positive show out there in the world that makes people feel good about themselves and helps make the world a better place. I think that it is kind of our responsibility, everyone’s responsibility to do that, and I personally, there’s a lot of tv shows that I absolutely just will not tune into and that if you do, you are supporting, well you know, the negativity and that we really create the world around us and we have the power to change it. We have to start with ourselves and that was really one of the first slides…thank you, I am glad you noticed that, it was something that I really wanted to do, you to turn everything into a positive and make the world a better place. BLS: Speaking of your positive philosophy and attitude towards brides and their dress experience, Randy To The Rescue, which, by the way, I haven’t missed, seems to carry a theme beyond just the dress shopping experience. It often seems to go deeply personal. What do you think makes Randy To The Rescue so special? RF: Well what is really great is that we are able to get more background information on these brides. When a bride comes into a salon, you only get to meet her for like an hour and a half and there is just so much more there and when filming the Randy To The Rescue, I keep thinking, ok, how can I be Anderson Cooper or Barbara Walters and ask the right questions. Because I feel that every person has a story to tell and that the show, hopefully,
You know what? That’s music to my ears. The one thing I don’t want is the show to be about me. I want the show to be about the brides and their stories and what they are going through, because I think that it really is helpful for other brides to see that they are not in this alone. That people share these common

fears and obstacles and they too can get through them too and hopefully helps show them how to get through these obstacles and fears. BLS: I have seen you create Randy’s Bridal Blueprint. What is that exactly and why is it so important? RF: Having been a designer and sketching, it’s almost like a dress rehearsal for them, almost like an architect’s plan for a house. You put all the pieces together and see how it’s all going to work. Like a designer coming in and picking out the colors for a room, you know, the drapes, the sofa and the throw pillows and the carpet and everything. It’s the same thing with a wedding and that with a room, you always want to find a focal point and in a (Cont. next page)

wedding that focal point is and should be the bride. What are the elements that are going to showcase her and make her beauty really stand out and what is going to make her figure look best and what accessories are going to bring out her best features and accent the dress and make it look its best. So the Blueprint kind of lays all that out. And what’s great about getting them in hair and make up and accessories, then walk down the “Aisle of Style,” is, you know, for a bride, on her wedding day, this is the first time she has put all of these elements together. So if it doesn’t look right, well, it is a little too late then. So I believe having a Blueprint and walking down the “Aisle courtesy photo of Style,” is really a dress rehearsal so that on her wedding day, she can kind of sit back and say, “ok, here it is, do it and let’s enjoy it.” Because she knows what it is going to be so she can really enjoy the rest of her wedding. BLS: So tell us about your book, “It’s All About The Dress,” and what made you decide to write this book?
RF: Well, my book, “It’s All About The Dress,” of course, not that I am promoting it or selling it, but I did write it for brides to use as a tool to guide them through he process of selecting the perfect wedding dress for them. You know when I went to the publisher, you know, our first meeting, she said to me, she said “you know Randy, if Shakespeare wrote a book today, he wouldn’t be able to sell it. But because you are on a reality tv show, you are going to sell thousands.” You know I kind of chuckled and I said, well, before we go any further, I want you to know that I am not writing this book because I am on a reality tv show. I am writing this book because every single bride that walks through the doors shares the very same emotion. And that is fear and the book is really something that I think was really needed just to guide the brides through the whole process, really as simply as possible. I tried to make the book just a real easy read and break everything down to its basic elements and begin the search for your wedding dress and these are the things you really need to know. There is a lot of information out there and that you don’t really need to know everything to find the right dress. It (the book), gives them the basics to make choosing the wedding dress as easy as possible.

hen planning your wedding, you will have many decisions to make and one of them will be choosing the wedding cake artist or baker to create this perfect, sweet treat for one of your reception’s iconic stars. One of the first things to think about is your budget. According to TheWeddingReport.com, the average cost of a basic 3 tier wedding cake in Oklahoma, is just shy of $400 or approximately $4 per slice. A cake of this size will typically feed 75 to 100 people, so be sure to plan accordingly. The number of people who will actually be attending directly affects the price of the cake. Don’t go by the number of invitations you send out! On average, 1/3 of those invites sent will not translate into actual guests. There are also other costs involved like delivery and cake stand rental. Okay, you have decided on your budget and now it is time to search out a wedding cake artist. Most wedding merchants see great cake artists time and time again and get to see first hand the happy, or not so happy, bride. The great cake artist works hard to create the best experience for their clients and word of mouth advertising and referrals are the true life blood of any business. We recommend that you take a look at two to four cake artists. Quite honestly, if you visit more than this, the differences become blurred and you may begin to confuse them. Great cake artist’s schedules fill up quickly and many are often booked out 6 months or more in advance. While a beautifully designed cake is awesome and a sight to behold; this artistic piece is designed to be eaten and should taste as scrumptious as it looks. When you contact the cake merchants, be sure to ask if they offer a tasting service. Don’t be surprised if there is a nominal fee for this. After all, this takes time and materials are used as they prepare for your cake tasting visit. When you meet with the cake artist/bakery, you may feel a little overwhelmed at the different cake ideas displayed. But never fear, your cake artist will guide you through the design process. When you discuss your desires for your wedding cake, don’t be afraid to let the artist know if you like or don’t like a particular design or design element. I am not saying to go all “zilla” on them. The point is that this is just not a time to be shy about what you like or dislike. It is also a great idea to show the cake artist your ideas by using inspiration boards like Pinterest, to illustrate what you like. Some cake artists will have an inspiration book or album of cakes they have done in the past. Whether resources are great or limited, a wedding chapel can remove a lot of the typical stress of planning a wedding. A good wedding chapel will have experienced coordinators who can think on their feet and work with you and your family in a professional and respectful manner. If you are unsure about a particular chapel; see if you can talk to some previous brides that were married there and get their take on their services. Most wedding chapels have both the chapel and reception areas under one roof or property. This works very well for out of town guests since they need only find one location for the wedding. Wedding chapels typically offer packages that include food, entertainment (DJ), cake, etc. But be prepared. It is not uncommon for a wedding chapel to not permit an outside vendor such as a caterer without an up charge. If you would like to use a different vendor than one that is in the chapel’s package, be sure to check with the chapel on their policies before you cross a particular venue off the list. Etiquette and the Wedding Cake
A
n enduring and sweet wedding tradition, the wedding cake is more than just a dessert. It is often one of the last ceremonious portions of the wedding. While it is a fun and tasty part of the day; we have detailed a few simple guidelines for helping this sweet and beautiful treat stay in social grace. First and foremost, the wedding cake should be placed in a prominent location. Traditionally the cake table would be placed directly in front of the bridal party table or head table in such a way as not to obscure viewing the couple. The cake is a showpiece and deserves to be lit as well.

When feeding the cake to one another, the groom would typically feed the first slice to the bride and then the bride would serve her new husband. It is also acceptable for both bride and groom to serve each other simultaneously.

In our previous issue, we discussed the differences of a DJ, entertainer and live musician. Any of which are excellent additions to the wedding bash; but for this issue, we will turn our attention to the wedding DJ.

equipment and their gear is solid. They have backup gear in case an amp or speaker goes down. They will have equipment that is high quality and sounds great. The good wedding DJ knows acoustics and can set the highs, mids and lows and place the speakers in virtually any environment, making the announcements audible and understandable while creating a sound experience that envelopes the room without it being too bassy or tinny. They will have wireless mics of good quality and most importantly, they will have a good personality and know how to work a room full of people. One of the saddest things I have seen at a reception is guests making fun of the substandard dj’s announcements because no one could understand a word he said. Even worse is hearing jokes about how the DJ just sat there like a bump on a log and looked like he/she wanted to be anywhere but there. It takes someone with a passion for weddings, the couple, music and being a wedding DJ to do this right. When you meet with your wedding DJ for the first time, the chemistry and charisma of the person who is going to emcee your once in a lifetime moments is crucial. Often the personality, or lack thereof, you see in that meeting is a good hint of what you will see at your reception and you deserve a wedding DJ that is going to rock the house, listen to you and make your dream party come true.
Your wedding, your guests and you deserve much more than a cd player or iPod. The wedding DJ knows how to move the event along, create an ambiance and get the party going; thus making your wedding reception even more memorable and one that you, your family and friends will always remember with a smile.

So how do you find this party miracle worker? Most great wedding DJ’s advertise online, in magazines, Facebook, etc. But a great ad doesn’t equal a great DJ. Talk to the DJ and see if personalities click. Talk with your other wedding merchants. These folks are the ones who really know the good ones. Your photographer, videographer, wedding venue and certainly your wedding coordinator (the good ones) will know and be able to recommend a great wedding DJ. But don’t just take one merchant’s word for it. Get two or three recommendations and you will have better idea of who will be the better fit for you.

ove can happen in a flash and so it was with Kelsey & Jeremy. Meeting at a mud run race called the Dirty 30, an event that benefits the non-profit organizations, Water is Life and the Sparrow Project, little did they know that this was no chance meeting. Cupid had something more in store. So there it began. Jeremy took Kelsey to the place that they had their first date, the Lobby Bar on Western. After a glass of wine, they took a drive towards Mulhall, Oklahoma, where the Dirty 30 race was held. “We got out to the land and he had prepared a picnic and champagne and was being very romantic.” “Then, he took me back to my parent’s house and he proposed there, right in front of our closest family and friends!” “It was a wonderful surprise engagement party and I felt truly blessed.” Kelsey’s dream for her wedding was one of whimsy and romance. Not wanting it overdone and kept warm and intimate, they decided to have their ceremony at Life Church since it was one of the first places they came as a couple. “We started going to church together at
the very beginning of our relationship so it only seemed fitting to start our new journey together there.” In keeping with the warm and intimate theme, Kelsey and Jeremy’s reception was held at Lottinvilles. The couple not only enjoys the food, but they feel the restaurant itself is breathtaking, giving their event a unique and personal touch. To this day, Kelsey wouldn’t change a thing about her wedding. She describes her favorite part of the whole day was “walking down the aisle toward my future husband.” “It was everything I could have ever wanted.” “I was very anxious and nervous, but in a peaceful sort of way.” “I couldn’t wait to walk down the aisle towards my love and become one. It was by far the best day of my life.” “God definitely gave me a sense of security and happiness that day that I can’t describe in words.”

hen two people get married, there is a lot of focus on planning for the big event, the honeymoon, your new home and just the joy of wedded bliss in general. However, the number one issue that causes friction between a couple, whether you have been married for 1 month, 1 year or 10 years is money. Yup, that dastardly “M” word has been responsible for more hurt feelings and broken hearts than anything else.

Once a budget is decided upon, make the decision on who is going to be responsible for managing the finances. But remember to make financial decisions together and respect each other’s opinions and feelings. As a couple, you should meet at least monthly to see how things are going and stay in touch. You should both be in the loop.

Dave suggests that “when you see that a budget is just spending your money with intention, you’ll actually experience more freedom than before.” The fact is, when you create a budget and stick with it, you will plug up those leaks in your finances and begin to hold on to your money, which in turn will empower you to do the things you want to do in your life, like purchase a home.

ou never know where life is going to take you sometimes. Jade discovered this first hand while at the Baltimore National Aquarium. There with her then boyfriend Paul, his sister Sue and friend Crystal, they were taking in the sites as they all came up to the dolphin exhibit. Jade needed to step away and while she did, Paul and the others viewed the dolphins. Upon Jade’s return, the others were done and it was decided that they would view other things while Jade had her turn. With fascination in her eyes at the mystical creatures in front of her, Jade’s “face was pretty much pressed up to the glass watching the dolphins swim and play.” She then turned around to see Paul down on one knee. “He looked really nervous and was sweating.” Jade, confused at first, began to realize what was happening as he began “saying very nice things.” Then suddenly, almost as if a world that hadn’t existed before was suddenly thrust into theirs, a voice from an old gentleman, who worked at the exhibit, piped up from behind them and said, “WOW, this is the first time I’ve seen a proposal in the dolphin exhibit!” “Of course I said YES when Paul asked me to marry him!” Paul’s proposal was followed by applause from the other exhibit guests as Jade said yes!

Wedding inspiration comes in many forms. For Jade, it was the Peacock. Along with the beautiful colors of the male, Jade also saw similarities between Paul and this bird that struts its stuff. Jade recalls that he would always bring her beautiful flowers, take her to her favorite eateries and do all sorts of things to “attract me to him” much as the male Peacock would to attract its mate with his colorful feathers and fanciness. Jade shares that, while he still does those things, “since we are married, he finds
Jade recalls that “Paul was very traditional about the whole wedding and didn’t want us to see each other the night before or the day of the wedding, so the first time I saw him was as I was coming down the stairs and walking down the aisle on our wedding day! We both cried a little.”
Both living in Northern Maryland, a great deal of wedding planning was over the phone and internet. After a search of venues that seemed “big and impersonal,” Jade discovered a quaint and intimate spot called Old Trinity of Paseo. Her mother and grandmother went into see the venue. Jade, joining them via Skype decided that when fac toring in the location, the smaller, more intimate feeling and budgetary concerns, this was the perfect setting for their wedding day. Of all that was Jade & Paul’s wedding, the only thing they wish they could change would have been to have found Sarah Mansur of Sara Adell Photography, first. Living 1600 miles away gave little ability to interact in person and we were “slightly panicked” as, unfortunately, the photographer originally hired “took our money and vanished.” So after a family friend’s call out for help on Facebook, Sarah came highly recommended. Jade contacted her and shared the situation, and “THANK GOD she was available that weekend.”

Cooking For Two...
Rediscovering Lasagna By Jenny George
T
here is so much going on in our lives these days that it is often difficult to even sit down at the table much less have the time to prepare a wholesome and hearty meal. While it may seem like an old standard, many twists can be put on this favorite comfort food that will please carnivores and vegetarians alike. Lasagna freezes well and if kept wrapped tightly, can last in the freezer 4-6 months. This is a fairly easy recipe and may take up to 2 hours from start to finish, but you will be rewarded with 6 or more meals for two people. My favorite thing was to actually purchase a lasagna pan. You can use virtually any large casserole pan but for the purposes of this article, we will assume you have the cool, stainless steel pan I picked up at JCP. This particular pan is roughly 12” wide x 16” long x 3” deep. Lasagna of this size should yield about 12, 4 to 5” squares which is a perfect hearty portion for any meal. For those with smaller appetites, you might slice those squares a second time yielding a 2x5” slice. Take the leftovers and wrap them tightly in foil to ensure the lasagna is not exposed. It is a good idea to put a date on the foil with a sharpie before you put them in the freezer. I prefer to heat these up in the regular oven. Thaw the frozen slices in the refrigerator the night before or even before you go to work in the morning. Once thawed, pop them on a cookie sheet and put them into the oven. Ovens vary but I will usually leave them in at 350 degrees for about 20-30 minutes or until piping hot. Reheating in the foil helps preserve the moisture of the noodles. You can experiment with these times to find out which works best for your oven. Yes, you can microwave these, but I find that the lasagna gets dried out and a bit rubbery. Also, if you choose to heat this up in the microwave, be sure to remove the foil or you will be faced with replacing your microwave after the fireworks show. I like to have a little tomato sauce handy to lightly pour over the slice. Your favorite spaghetti sauce will also work here. Top it off with a little parmesan cheese, toast a piece of garlic bread and you have a lovely Italian style dinner you can easily enjoy. Just don’t forget the drippy candles on the table. :c)

(I prefer cooking the noodles, but you can also use the instant style noodles) 3 jars of your favorite spaghetti sauce 2 jars of mushrooms 2, 32 ounce cartons of Ricotta cheese 3, 8 ounce packages of shredded mozzarella cheese 1, 8 ounce package of shredded parmesan (save a little of this for the garlic toast) 1 tablespoon of sugar 4 cloves of garlic, chopped ½ cup onion, finely chopped (if you don’t care for onion’s texture, substitute with a tablespoon of onion powder) Salt and pepper to taste 1 tablespoon of olive oil 1 pound of ground beef or pork Italian sausage. You can also substitute pine nuts or tofu.
Directions: In a saucepan, sweat the garlic and onions until translucent, add the ground beef or pork and cook until done. Drain excess fat. Do not drain if using pine nuts or tofu.
Place the pan back on the burner and set to low. Add the tomato sauce/spaghetti sauce, mushrooms and sugar. For those who don’t care about calories, add a cup of heavy cream (yummy) and simmer. While simmering the sauce, cook the noodles until they are al dente’. Drain and rinse with cold water In the lasagna pan, cover the bottom and sides with olive oil. The noodles are delicate so carefully begin placing the noodles side by side in a single layer until the bottom is covered. Spoon approximately 1/3 cup of Ricotta cheese on the noodles, then spread about 4 ounces of mozzarella over this. Then spoon a layer of sauce over the cheese and noodles until covered. Repeat this step twice. On the final layer, spread the parmesan cheese on top. (note: it is normal to occasionally have a couple of leftover noodles.) Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 60 minutes. When done, the top layer should be golden brown and bubbly. Remove from the oven and let rest for about 10 minutes. Slice and enjoy!

iving in Oklahoma, we deal with various types of weather. It’s important to know how to apply your makeup and style your hair in way that will hold up in these weather conditions. Choosing the right type of products is your first step in making sure your makeup will hold up during your wedding day.

The next step begins with skin prep. Always begin with a clean, moisturized and primed face prior to makeup application. It’s important to use waterproof or water resistant products regardless of the weather due to perspiring or crying. But in our weather you need to take extra precautions. Here are some tips on making your wedding makeup and hair last all day and night. Makeup for Hot, Humid or Wind In hot, humid or windy weather, makeup is hard to keep in place; it smears and doesn’t seem to last. It’s important to use light makeup and use waterproof mascara, waterproof eyeliner, long lasting foundation, preferably a mineral type makeup and water based or silicone based foundation. Avoid products containing oil. If you have blemishes use a concealer to spot treat. You can also purchase makeup sealers to help your products hold for that extra bit of security. These are typically a spray that you mist on your face after your makeup is applied. I recommend a few items such as Ferro Face Primer, Ferro Cosmetics, Burts Bee’s Lip balm, Rosebud Salve lip balm, Ferro lip color, Loreal lip gloss, Makeup Up For Ever Mist & Fix sealer spray. Also be sure to keep blot sheets with you throughout event.

Hair for Hot, Humid or Wind Hair drops and frizzes up with heat, humidity or wind. Typically an up hair style would be best. If it’s up and out of way, you will have nothing to worry about. If you wear your hair down and its touching your neck and back, you may have hair that will get damp and your curl will fall. Even with extra hairspray, it will flatten and be sticky. Unless you know you will be in a controlled climate at all times I wouldn’t suggest wearing your hair down. If it’s not too hot, a half up style is also a nice choice. Tip for those who prefer their hair down: wear your hair down for the ceremony then throw it up for the reception. Products I would recommend for your wedding day is Alterna Hair Care. Prep hair with Alterna’s bamboo smoothing products, and their bamboo volume spray to create a lift to the hair. Then Alterna Caviar Working Spray to style the hair.

Makeup for Colder Weather Makeup holds up better in cooler conditions but it is still important to waterproof it all in case you cry or if you sweat on the dance floor during your reception. In my opinion a more natural skin look is best for your wedding day but you can wear heavier makeup in colder weather should you prefer. Foundation should be long lasting but also not too drying. The skin tends to need more moisture dur ing winter, as well as your lips. Be sure to use a lip balm to keep lips from being chapped. Products I suggest for colder weather are Ferro Face Primer, Ferro Cosmetics, Burts Bee’s Lip balm, Rosebud Salve lip balm, Ferro lip color, Loreal lip gloss, make up for ever lip pencils and lipsticks, Make Up For Ever Mist & Fix sealer spray and don’t forget to keep those blot sheets handy in case your skin gets oily during the reception or prior to pictures. Hair for Colder Weather Hair prefers the cooler climates. You may wear your hair any way you choose and not worry too much. Of course you still need to prep your hair accordingly with the proper products so it holds for several hours. Again, I recommend Alterna styling products as they are light weight and hold the hair beautifully for a long time.
