Cakes

T

raditionally, a typical multi tier wedding cake is present at every wedding. Today however, there are lots of options, besides the wedding cake. There are cupcake towers, or even a cake table display with multiple cakes. As a Southern tradition, besides the wedding cake, there is also a Groom's cake. It usually reflects something of the groom, it could be his favorite sports team, his occupation, or even just his favorite flavor. Then there is the ever so popular candy buffet, which is also seeing a transformation to include more than just candies, essentially, a "Sweet Table" that would have lots of fun, bite sized, desserts, from cookies, cake pops, macarons, to cake shooters and moose cups. The sky is the limit!

Mishelle Handy Cakes presents one more unique option for your event. A Cheesecake Bar! It can be an addition to the wedding cake, for the guests that may not care for cake or it can stand on its own, as an unconventional alternative. Perhaps your groom is not really a cake person, the cheesecake bar could be an exciting option instead of the traditional groom's cake. Beautifully and artistically displayed to match your wedding decor, Mishelle will help you design the perfect cheesecake bar. With an amazing array of flavors, it is sure to please every guest at your event.^ Mishelle Handy Cakes www.mishellehandycakes.com 405.348.5938

Mrs. Oklahoma Mrs. America

w

By Roy Groat Jr. in conversation with

Mrs. America, Michelle Evans

e are so excited that Mrs. America 2015, Michelle Evans, graced our cover in this issue. She a shining example of beauty, grace, and courage. We had a chance to chat with Michelle and get her take on her wedding, marriage and being Mrs. America. Q: Please tell us about your own wedding and what was going through your mind.

A: My husband and I got married at the Mayo Hotel in downtown Tulsa. We actually lived in New York at the time, but are both from Tulsa, so we knew that’s where we wanted to get married. Our wedding was everything we wanted and more. We love being home around our families and the place we will raise our children. A million different things were running through my mind that day. Will the horse and carriage show up (did I email her recently)? Did I remember the communion cups for our first communion together? Are there enough chairs for everyone at the ceremony? Deep breaths, right? I knew the second my husband was by my side, everything would be okay and my nerves would go away. I feel much more confident and at ease in any aspect when I’m with him. Q: So how is married life? Anything that surprised you about being married?

A: Married life is better than I ever imagined. I still look at my husband and think “holy cow, how did I get so lucky.” Learning to live with someone can always have, not really surprises as much as a “getting used to period.” I would say don’t be so hard on your spouse for the annoying things they do that might get under your skin. Q: How do you and your husband keep your relationship fresh?

A: Have “us” time. It’s so easy to get caught up in work, cleaning, children and friends/family. I used to surprise my husband all

the time with candle lit dinners, movie nights, and fun dates! Keep it going! When you both get home from a long day, hang out! Do your best to make them (your spouse) a priority. Q: Before becoming Mrs. America, you were Mrs. Oklahoma. What made you want to compete?

A: I was encouraged by a dear friend to compete, share the story of my brother and reach people struggling with addiction. I lost my brother four years ago to a prescription drug overdose. It tugged at my heart to think I could possibly prevent the devastation that has happened in my life from affecting other families. I then competed at Mrs. America in hopes to further my cause on a broader scale. On August 29, 2014, I was crowned Mrs. America 2015. It has been an unbelievable experience and I encourage any married woman that wants to grow personally, push themselves, promote a cause or just merely have a little fun, to consider competing. It was my very first pageant and now I’m Mrs. America! You never know what could happen! Q: Please tell us about your platform as Mrs. America!

A: I get to work nationally on drug awareness, drug prevention and prescription drug abuse. It’s an epidemic across the nation and this year, that’s my focus. Losing my brother has been extremely difficult, but through the website www.drugfreeok.org, working with state legislators, and speaking events, I get to share his life and help others. ^

words of wisdom for the brides My advice for the “Big Day” would be (to) enjoy the moment. You worked so incredibly hard, stressed about the littlest detail, so ensure that you enjoy your time. Take a minute in the reception with your husband and just look around, take it all in, because it goes by so fast. If something goes wrong, try and not let it ruin YOUR DAY (easier said than done, I know). When you look back, it’s probably a small thing in reality. Remember, it’s about the two of you being together.

STYLE

notes

With a beautiful rustic barn as the setting, the designer utilized colorful floral design, flowing fabrics, and golden accents to achieve the romantic feel with a touch of glamour. Lighting also played an important role of this design;. Especially with the romantic backdrop, draped with soft chiffon and leafy garland on top. The golden accents on the cakes and sweets adds not only romance to the design, it also added glamour. The design comes full circle with the scrumptious catering display on the wonderfully oversized and rustic wooden tables. Let's not forget the breathtaking couture gown with delicate lace and tulle was both glamorous and romantic. We especially loved the ribbon detail of the back.

Relationship 101 ^

Family,

PREPARING TO GROW YOUR

TOGETHER

I

BY

Roy Groat Jr.

t’s a good life! Ever since your wedding, life together, even with its inevitable ups and downs has been wonderful. You both know that you have each other’s back and can do virtually anything together. Suddenly, amidst the euphoria that has been perhaps your first few months to even a few years, something big and life changing is coming. Your family is about to grow!

Truly, bringing a child or children into this world, teaching them how to be great stewards of their lives and imparting to them, the wisdom of your life is, one of this life’s, greatest blessings. While we are not always prepared for that moment when you discover you are about to be parents, there are some things that you can prepare for when that wonderful day comes. At first, there will be excitement and sheer joy. Sometimes however, the sheer reality will hit you, and maybe there will be a sense of uncertainty, a feeling of being overwhelmed. It is a big responsibility to be sure. But remember that feeling of being able to accomplish anything together? Together…..one of the most important words in your relationship vocabulary. The simple reality is there will be times, through the pregnancy or adoption, and continuing right on as you raise your children, that you both are going to be exhausted and super busy with raising a family, work, church and other activities that are going to put demands on your time.

another moment to spare in a hectic day, making a priority to carve out a few of those moments for each other can and will work wonders for your psyche and your relationship. You both gather strength from each other and your personal, mental batteries are going to need recharging. It is so easy, in the course of just day to day living, to begin to grow apart. Relearning if you will, to do without each other and begin to rely on yourself alone. No one plans for this to happen, but all too often, it just does. Remember to keep moments for the two of you, never forgetting what makes you great as a team. Prioritizing time for each other is not only one of the greatest gifts you can give each other, it is a magnificent lesson you will teach your children through your example. Making time for each other doesn’t necessarily have to be some big, elaborate weekend or gift, etc. Simply remembering to hold hands while strolling with the kids or picking up a card, flower or some token to let the love of your life know they are still, the love of your life. There is an old song called “Little Things Mean A Lot.” There was never a sentiment more accurate than this. It is indeed those little things, the holding of hands, a long hug, cuddling in bed after a long day….that truly mean a lot, and can be very important to the health and well being of your very special relationship and family.

^

^

So let’s return to that word together. It is together that you and your family will thrive. Even when it seems like there is just not BRIDALIFESTYLE.COM | Spring/Summer 2015 BridalifeStyle Magazine

STYLE

notes

If you love color, this is a great style option for you. Bohemian styles are full of colors and eclectic patterns. You can mix and match your china as well as silverware; go for colorful blooms in the flowers, and style your eclectic jewelry with confidence. One word of caution, be sure to establish some sort of rule in all this chaos, creating a thread of cohesion that they eye can follow, so your mixology will have a thoughtful look. In this styled shoot, color is the rule, while everything is a mix match, but styled with the colors that the designer chose to go with the venue. The Bohemian style also allows a lot of freedom for interesting and fun details, like the lace ribbon backdrop and chandelier our designer created with glittered feathers. The flowers in ice cubes and metallic tattoos were just some of our favorite details from this design.

Y

ou are planning your wedding and wading through mounds of magazines, brochures, Pinterest boards and tons of details. One very important detail that sometimes gets brushed aside or overlooked all together is the true value and importance of good hair and makeup and hiring the right professionals to make this happen. Ashlee Bivins of Primp Hair & Makeup Studio suggests that the goal of your hair and makeup artists is to make you look and feel your best on one of the biggest days of your life! Subsequently, your photographs, the true tangible memories of this day, will show you looking and feeling your best. Professional makeup artists know how to highlight and contour your face so your features will look their best under any lighting situation. This compliments your photographs and allows your photographer to take advantage of your beautiful features and may even inspire greater creativity.

is that certain “something” that makes you and your event look that much more polished and put together. Ashlee adds that a key component to your wedding day running smoothly is developing a proper time line. By coordinating hair, makeup, dressing and the arrival of your photographer, with the help of experienced professionals, a much more stress free atmosphere can be created. Ashlee suggests something that most people don’t often think of. For a timeless look in your photos, less is more when it comes to retouching. Yes, it is truly amazing what can be done in the digital darkroom these days. However, having a seasoned hair and makeup team helps reduce the need for retouching. When looking for the right hair and makeup to fit your style, don’t forget to ask your photographer for recommendations. Most photographers have worked with the top hair and makeup artists and know who will take great care of their clients.^

Just as important is a great hair stylist who caters to brides and bridal parties and is well versed in bridal styles. Hair and makeup go hand in hand and one just really doesn’t go with out the other. Great hair stylists will make sure that every angle is meticulously styled so there are no glaring holes or other issues. It is not uncommon that a fabulous shot, usually at a different angle or perspective, actually highlights a flaw in your hair. The professionals know what to do to help prevent this. Sure, you can do your own hair and makeup, but why add that to an already big list of things to do? Take the stress away and let your professionals do this for you. You will be glad you did and you and your bridal party will have a more cohesive look. hile attending Oklahoma State University, Callie and Jake met during their freshman year as they worked on Homecoming festivities with their respective sorority and fraternity. Pledge classes were coming to a close and they both went to many of the same date parties, but it never happened that it was with each other. It wouldn’t be until after they graduated and ended up working in Dallas that they would truly discover each other and begin to hang out together. What started out as friendship turned into love and the two became inseparable. Eventually their love grew so strong that Jake knew he wanted to spend his life with Callie. Given that it was March and using a St. Patrick’s Day theme, through notes to various locations, each with a clue to the next, Jake had Callie follow the rainbow to her “pot of gold.” The clues sent Callie to various spots of meaning to the couple where friends awaited with the next clue. One of the locations being the Chesapeake Arena, home of their favorite basketball team, The OKC Thunder. Upon her arrival, a friend handed her a Thunder jersey and a note telling her she had “made the team.” The final clue on her journey through the rainbow would send her to Jake’s parent’s house. There, in the backyard, Jake waited patiently holding a ring box nestled in a pot of gold coins.

52 BridalifeStyle Magazine Spring/Summer 2015 | BRIDALIFESTYLE.COM

While Callie wanted a wedding filled with romance, she also wanted a contemporary feeling as well. She accomplished this by utilizing lots of acrylic and crisp lines. Not wanting to have everything match, different table sizes featuring different looks from the linen to the stemware through the tableware and florals, all while keeping it tied together through a central theme. “I wanted it to feel like we were having dinner out under the starts with florals everywhere, so we made one tent for the dinner with that feel.” For the dancing area, a different tent with an entirely different feel was created. Creating a “modern, crisp, nightclub feel where you are all crammed on the dance floor..” was the exact feel Callie was looking for. “I just wanted something different that I hadn’t seen at any other wedding…” Callie knows that “everything always takes longer than you think it will so you can never start too early.” She also reminds us to “pay attention to details.” That’s great advice as it is truly “the small details [that] are the things that make your wedding different from everyone else’s and what make it special.” She recalls being “so happy and excited on my wedding day!” Never really feeling sad or nervous during any point of the day. She recalls the counsel of her parents when they said “when you are deeply in love, you know you are marrying the love of your life, you know he has an amazing family, then it’s pretty hard to be sad and emotional, because

you can only smile ear to ear..” “…it is the best day of your life!” So with that, Callie, heeding her parents words, felt “happy, excited and very blessed to have the wedding of my dreams to the man of my dreams.”^

STORY BY Jenny George D. Park Photography

I

t has been said that life comes at us so very fast. Never was this sentiment more true than when we experience the big moments that literally change who we were just a few moments ago, like a wedding. In the blink of an eye you go from being Miss to Mrs. and suddenly, the world is different. “The wedding day was so amazing, dreamy, and surreal. Even now I can’t believe it happened!” Trying to soak up every possible minute of her day, Victoria would make every effort to take in every single moment she could. Walking up and down the aisle, trying to look at every single guest, taking in all the “familiar faces and beautiful decorations, hard work by my family and friends.” “It was so much fun!” She recalls never wanting the night to end. For this wedding was to be a beautiful event. Victoria had fallen in love with Gaillardia Country Club. The French-Normandy design of the main clubhouse, along with the elegant homes surrounding it, gave the her the feel of a castle perched atop the countryside. “I never thought I would get married at such a beautiful place.”

This wedding was indeed a dream come true. She wanted a fun wedding but one that was “elegant but not stoic” all while playing to her romantic side. The wedding ceremony was filled with music. Music which included classical piano pieces along with piano versions of classic and contemporary Disney songs. Victoria was decked out in a beautiful Vera Wang ball gown and her bridesmaids wore long, flowing dresses. Amidst all the music and fanfare of this wedding, there was one very special soul that neither Victoria or Jarred wanted to get lost. God. “I wanted to make sure we did not get swooped away and completely consumed with the pretty, materialistic, secular component of weddings.” To ensure they honored God appropriately, on bistro tables throughout the reception site were bible verses and prayers, special to them, on display for each guest to gaze upon and ponder. The opportunity of celebrating this special moment in their lives with family and friends as well as honoring God was most important to Victoria and Jarred. The beautiful decorations and accoutrements that accompany a wedding, were truly secondary in their minds. “I felt so incredibly lucky and blessed to have such a wonderful wedding.” “It was so wonderful seeing all the people from different parts of our life all come together.” Victoria knew that these are indeed the best of times and these times do come at you fast, so she was certain to take every moment in. Knowing that they will never come again and she didn’t want to miss a moment of it. She suggests to “pick the three most important things to you and place the emphasis on those three things…be willing to compromise and not sweat over the rest.” Victoria recalls that “It felt like all the pieces of the puzzle (which is a picture of us) came together as many of these people (family and friends attending) helped shape who we are today.”^

e love unique and amazing places for brides to celebrate their big day! One of those spectacular places is an Oklahoma institution and shining gem, The Sam Noble Museum of Natural History. Not only is the Museum a grand and beautiful facility, the unique nature and spectacle that is the Museum will leave you and your guests inspired, creating an experience that won’t soon be forgotten. We sat down with Jay Jamison. He has been the Facility Rentals and Events Coordinator for the Museum since 2011 and has a long history with the Museum dating back to 2005. We wanted to get his perspective on what makes this place a great spot to celebrate your wedding.

A little history of the Museum reveals that in 1899, the Territorial Legislature of the future State of Oklahoma mandated the founding of a natural history museum on the campus of the University of the Territory of Oklahoma in Norman, which we now call the University of Oklahoma. Since that time, the existing museum has had a long and distinguished history, acquiring over 10 million objects that belong to the people of the State of Oklahoma. While its priColorband PhotoArtisans mary mission is to protect the objects in their collections, they are a multifaceted institution that houses research facilities, extensive educational programs, a robust volunteer program and of course, special event facilities among much more.

64 BridalifeStyle Magazine Spring/Summer 2015 | BRIDALIFESTYLE.COM

Now Jay is a musician himself, has played piano since he was six and has an unique perspective on venues large and small. “I understand the huge importance of the venue in creating an experience…in order to have a truly remarkable event, you need an equally remarkable venue.” He adds, “The Sam Noble Museum can offer a wedding experience like no other.” Now one of the things that has been heard of when choosing a museum for an event is there are often restrictions. While The Sam Noble Museum does indeed have some restrictions, they also permit some things that may surprise you. Being able to bring fresh florals into the Museum would be a big one. Jay shares that “we do welcome fresh-cut florals for special events based on certain conditions.” He adds “most importantly, the flowers should be sourced from a professional florist to ensure that the plants are grown in a regulated and pest-free environment.” The Museum does provide instructions for all florists which informs them of the policies they have in place which are designed to minimize the impact on the Museum’s collections. With such an unique and amazing place in the heart of Oklahoma, Jay encourages brides to think outside the box! “There are some really great venues out there and places like the Sam Noble Museum can offer much more than a standard banquet or conference space.” “The unique atmosphere of “alternative” venues such as ours offers an opportunity to host a truly original wedding that you and your guests will not forget.”

^ to pay We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. Be sure them a visit or view their website at www.snomnh.ou.edu and see for yourself how awesome your wedding could be! ^

The Museum is no ordinary wedding venue. Jay shares with us that the Museum is incredibly elegant and modern. Featuring granite terrazzo flooring throughout, the spaces are expansive and grand with soaring ceilings and skylights. Many clients will choose to open certain gallery areas for guests to roam, like the Hall of Ancient life (think dinosaurs!) Besides, where else can you dance with a two-ton bronze Mammoth?

Jay reminds us that the Museum can be used for different events as well, such as the rehearsal dinner, receptions, the ceremony or the entire event. They have packages set up for all types of events that include tables, chairs, setup and strike crews, security and custodial services. They even have audio-visual services. He reminds us that Museum spaces are flexible and can accommodate most any size or type of event. The museum can hold up to about 200 guests for a full indoor wedding ceremony and reception. However, with a reception only (or an outdoor ceremony and indoor reception), the capacity increases up to 600 guests! Jay adds that they will work closely with all of their couples to create a plan that is customized to their needs.

STYLE

notes

We love the juxtaposition of a modern design in a vintage environment. This styled shoot is modern, funky, yet elegant with a nod to the Art Deco style. 624 Boston in downtown Tulsa is grand building with beautiful Art Deco designs. The designer took on the building and gave it a modern twist with fun geometric shapes and the use of dramatic black accents. All white floral design adds to the modern feel but focusing on texture in the flowers adds richness. There are a lot of bespoke design elements in this style shoot which adds character and personality to the styling. From the stationery, geometric centerpiece structure, and geometric paper cubes, you see this style character and personality throughout. The overhead test tube floral installation is truly the crown jewel of this design.

STYLE

notes

The designers for this styled shoot were inspired by the frosted look of early Spring. Everything in sight, glistening with a coating of frost is certainly a beauty to behold. To achieve the look, we first start with the sequined table cloth. The silver sequins provided the glisten we were looking for. Staying with all white flowers in the floral design allows the crystals to take center stage. From the sequins on the dress to the crystal earrings, bracelet and even the garter, everything the bride wore has sparkle! There is a glint to every detail! The wedding cake, the gourmet cookie favors in diamond shapes right down to, and including the small crystal on the menus, glistening bling would be found. The naked cake for this design was especially appropriate as the confectioner sugar provided a dusting layer over the cake like a light, morning frost. While everything was in white and cream, the bridesmaids dresses provided a pop of color to mimic the early Spring flowers burgeoning through that thin layer of frost.

Lauren Wilburn y Jay Doyle 09.20.2014

Jenny George PHOTOGRAPHY BY Robby and Savannah STORY BY

I

n every wedding, the bride and groom experience poignant moments. Moments so indelible that they cannot help but carry them in their hearts forever. For Lauren, one of those actually became her favorite part of the wedding. When her father walked her down the aisle to meet Jay, she recalls just how “…that is truly a special moment I will never forget.” Seeing each other, walking down that aisle for the first time, is a magical moment indeed. As if there weren’t another soul in the world. Walking through space and time on that long, last journey through life as individuals. For Jay, seeing Lauren make this journey, guided by her father to him, was truly his moment as well. This was a moment that Jay truly hoped and wished for. Knowing how much he loves her and how the gift of Lauren spending her life with him was indeed special, he was ready to ask that magical question. During the Christmas Holidays, after a delightful dinner together downtown, Jay told Lauren that they were going to go to a Christmas party with some friends. They pulled into a neighborhood. One that they both knew all too well for they had fallen in love with it a year earlier in 2013 when they had gone through the Parade of Homes. “It was a dream neighborhood and we really had not talked about it much after the parade.” But that was a memory Jay would hold on to. Driving around under the guise of looking at Christmas lights, Jay stopped in front of a nearly empty lot. There was just one thing on the lot. A sign that simply said “Future Home of Lauren & Jay Doyle.” Surprised, Lauren stepped out of the car and found Jay proposing to her on the property he had

90 BridalifeStyle Magazine Spring/Summer 2015 | BRIDALIFESTYLE.COM

purchased for them. The place where they would build their lives and family. It was the place that would be their home. The wedding, a very special thing to both Lauren and Jay, was something they wanted to look back on and remember how “very elegant and classic” it truly was. Part of the puzzle was the location and, after looking at several places, fell in love with the GaylordPickens Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. The grandeur of the front of this building with its magnificent steps crowned by majestic capitals and a beautiful courtyard was very appealing. They knew this would be the perfect place for a September wedding and felt very fortunate to find such a place. Their wedding was simple and beautiful. Decorated with a navy blue and white color palette, it was chosen to let the pops of navy shine while grounding the decor with all white flowers to lend the elegance they both wanted so much. “It was very simple but turned out beautiful.” “Our wedding was everything I had hoped it would be.” Even though Lauren felt that “from the moment I put the dress on, it was a roller coaster.” Their beautiful ceremony was filled with family and friends. This was a moment to share with them and spend time with those they truly love. “When we came into the reception area, we immediately hit the light up dance floor and from then on it was non stop smiling and laughing and being filled with so much joy!”^

Destination

Q:

Weddings 101 BY

Roy Groat Jr. with Michelle Carbone of Michelle's Destinations Unlimited

A couple is looking to have a destination wedding. What suggestions would you make regarding finding the right location or resort?

#1 would be working with an agent that has been to the destinations you're thinking about (like, are you looking for a beach allinclusive, a cruise, something in Europe, something close by in the US, or Alaska, etc) and specializes in destination weddings! He or she will help you find the right location and resort. I've been doing destination weddings for almost 17 years, which started with my own destination wedding in the Bahamas! We don't all do every location and a good agent will tell you where they have experience with and where they don't! Just a few of the things you should think about - If you'd like just 1 legal wedding or if you plan to marry here for the legal part and then have a symbolic/religious ceremony - legal requirements vary by country, and many are more difficult for the legal part. The right agent will be able to tell you what locations are best for what you want! Think about what is important to you - this could be anything from being able to have a sunset wedding (where you can see the beautiful sun setting behind you) or being able to have a lighted dance floor to things like having a jacuzzi in your room or having an allinclusive resort. Are there children attending or do you want something adults only? There are many options out there, so you really have to think about what's important to you. Dream about your wedding - what do you see? The more you can describe, the better the recommendations will be! Q: Just the term "destination wedding" sounds expensive. Can this be done on a budget?

For sure! Most couples do a destination wedding to save money and have a more intimate ceremony with close friends and family. Rates vary depending on the season and what type of trip you're doing, but, most couples I work with end up spending anywhere from 3500 to 6500 for their travel

96 BridalifeStyle Magazine Spring/Summer 2015 | BRIDALIFESTYLE.COM

and wedding package. Some do spend more and some less- you have to think about how many guests are coming - a larger wedding can have just the wedding cost at around 3000-5000 or more (I've had a few that have spent 10,000 and more for the wedding part). Things that you add are going to cost more - so, flowers, nicer chairs, decor, additional guests, etc. Working with the right person will help you keep your budget on track! Q: Are there any pitfalls that lurk out there? What might they be and how can you, a travel agent, help them through that?

I'd say one of the pitfalls are guests you want to come who can't or won't travel - usually they can't afford it, can't get a passport, or don't like to fly or cruise, etc. It's important to check with those that you really want to attend to make sure they can or be OK if they don't come. While we as agents can't help with this, that's one issue many couples we've consulted with run into. Working with the local wedding coordinators can be a challenge as well - the language barrier can sometimes be an issue and their response time isn't always the best. When you work with someone like me who has experience working with the resorts, you won't have to stress about these issues. Extra guests costs also tend to be an issue, but, when you work with the right agent, we'll help you stay on budget by working with the resort to ensure everything is done in a way we'll get the best value and make suggestions on ways to save money. Q: There are travel websites and most resorts have websites. Isn't it just as easy for a bride to plan her destination wedding from her computer?

When working with us, the couple can still plan from their computer! We've worked with couples in our office, via email and on the phone. I've had many couples who have started planning on their own and they find it's very overwhelming! They come to us and can't be happier they decided to do that!

We take care of working with the guests so the couple doesn't have to worry about them. Our agency will even build a wedding website to help with getting the information out to everyone and we have online booking forms as well. One common misconception is that using an agent costs more. This simply isn't the case. Most of the time, we're going to be able to secure group rates and discounts that will save the couple and guests money. We'll know of things like free room promos, how to get airfare discounts, etc. We also can usually offer a low deposit option for guests, which helps them be able to book their space and pay it out! Keeping track of guests that have actually booked can be a challenge if you aren't working with an agent. We keep track of everyone and make sure they are, one, staying at the right resort and, two, are going on the right dates (and, yes, I've had clients who have had these issues with guests who didn't book with us!) Q: Do you have any additional advice or suggestions about planning a destination wedding?

My number one rule for couples is to not invite anyone you don't want to come or can't afford to pay to come - otherwise, you can really bust the budget with extra guest fees! Work with an agent you like, we're all a little different and the right match will make your planning a breeze!! I personally do around 30-40 weddings a year and all of my couples are so great to work with. One thing I love is that they continue to use us for their travel after the wedding! We always do a consultation to make sure we're the right fit and if they are looking for something that isn't a match, we'll refer them to an agent we know that might be a better fit for them!^

ost of us, at one point or another, dream about what our future will bring. For many young girls, the dream of who they will marry and the magic of what that wedding day will be is one of those dreams that has lived since they were just a little girl. Such was the case with Tiffany. Her vision, even from a little girl, found her dreaming of a modern “LA” style wedding, saying her vows to the one she loved on a sun drenched beach. Tiffany would meet the one she would eventually say those vows to in the summer of 2009 while on a college internship. She recalls that “he pursued me for over a year.” But eventually, after nearly a whole year later, they finally would share their first date together in May of 2010. Their love for one another grew from there and found that one of the big things they had in common was a love for the beach. Time passed and Johnathan knew the time was right. It was during a trip with their best friends to Destin, Florida when, after a romantic dinner, the two took a stroll. As they walked, the magic of the Emerald Coast surrounded them. For when a couple in love walk amongst the sounds of the emerald water gently crashing upon the sugar white sands, amongst the cries of the seagulls and the sensation of the soft, white sand beneath your feet, it is as if they

were in a cradle that gently held them. As if you could almost touch the very moment in time in which you are standing. It was in this moment that Johnathan knew there would never be a better time to drop to one knee and ask Tiffany to spend the rest of her life with him. With such a magic, indelible moment in their lives, they decided that a destination, Jamaican wedding would be the perfect place in time to embark on their life long journey together. It was in Montego Bay, Jamaica at one of Iberostar Resorts beautiful destinations that the dream of Tiffany’s beach wedding would become a reality. There, surrounded by the closest of friends and family, the sounds of the water crashing upon the sun drenched beach, they would pledge their lives and love to one another. “My wedding day was the most magical day of my life!” Tiffany found of planning her wedding that planning ahead is an absolute must as there never seems to be enough time. That it is 100 percent about what you and your future spouse want. This magical wedding day was about dreams…..magical dreams that for Tiffany and Johnathan, came true. “I was care free and ready to marry the man of my dreams. I would not have changed one thing!”^

F

or most guys, planning the wedding really wasn’t on their mind when they proposed. But here you are, maybe feeling like you want to run; worried that a big argument looms in the future. It’s really not that scary if you keep a couple of things in mind. Before you do anything, you and your fiancé should sit down and discuss what you both want and who will do what. Maybe one of you or both agree that hiring a wedding planning professional is the way to go. The same may be true of planning the wedding yourselves. There really is no right or wrong here. The biggest first step however, is to be on the same page with each other. You both may want to do virtually everything together and that is great. It is possible that one of you would rather not have a large role in the event. Perhaps one of you will take on a greater role and be more involved while the other will have a handful of very specific items like tuxedos, transportation, rehearsal dinner, etc. Be sure to communicate your goals, feelings and desires to each other.

Planning a wedding isn’t necessarily all about décor and frills either. It isn’t a requirement that you love tulle and flowers to help plan a wedding. Remember, the operative word here is planning, which requires organization and budgeting. Perhaps you have helped plan events in the past or are great with keeping up with the finances. Maybe you are simply great at organizing. The point here is, in all likelihood, you both have skills that can truly help one another make this event the best it can be. Whatever the two of you decide, once you commit to it, DO IT. Procrastinating, not paying attention, showing up late for appointments and such will tend to create tension and conflict which is the last thing either of you want to feel. For most couples, this is your first big opportunity to really work together as a couple. Keeping up with each other, respecting the opinions each of you have and keeping discussions civil, are keys to successful planning. Keep those lines of communication open, especially when planning one of the biggest events of your lives. You may well find working together on a project can be a very rewarding experience and perhaps even fun! ^

inding that perfect person whom you want to share the rest of your life with is rarely planned. Some brides may see or feel that they are about to be asked “the question.” But that was not the case with Angela. “Blissfully clueless!” This is the way Angela describes what, at the time, was the biggest surprise Cale had created for her. It was after months of trying to hide this big surprise that he led her to the bow of a cruise ship sailing “somewhere in the middle of the ocean.” The wind, howling and gusting heavily, the two took shelter in a dark stairwell. Thinking that they were just taking in the view, Angela was indeed surprised when Cale “pulled a little box out of his jacket and got down on one knee.” Opening the box, Angela recalls it was “the most gorgeous ring I had ever seen!” Amidst the moment swirling in her head, she thought he had been spontaneous and purchased the ring on board. She had no idea that Cale had been planning this for months as Angela, at one point, she tells us, was actually carrying the ring around in a backpack, cluelessly. Upon their return from a most special trip, the newly engaged couple set out to plan their wedding. “We knew we wanted classic, minimalistic with a little bit of our individual personalities thrown in.” Angela recalls that, while the vision for the wedding took some time to develop, “the real details

started to come together when my craze for “The Great Gatsby” came into play.” The art deco cake and vintage get away car were inspired from this. “Ultimately we wanted to create an event that felt timeless when our loved ones, as well as we looked back years from now.” [sic] Growing together as an engaged couple presents challenges that aren’t typically faced by a dating couple. Planning a wedding is really the new couple’s first real challenge at working together. Angela shares that “planning a wedding can often turn into one partner’s territory.” While it may not always be easy, “we got the chance to learn before marriage how to compromise the small things for a bigger goal together, and the bigger end goal is always so worth it.” [sic] In the end, they planned a wedding that was truly a day for them and a reflection of who they are. Angela was a strange bride. At least according to her bridesmaids because she was so very calm. “I woke up feeling so calm and at ease about everything.” She attributes this level of calm to her “hands on groom & friends” who were taking care of the details. However, she further relates her “calm excitement” lasted throughout the day. “From getting ready, to our “First Look,” to the ceremony & the reception, there was such peace and happiness in the air.” The goal was set for timeless simplicity and it was a success! ^

Wedding & Event

Y

ou are getting married! Awesome and congratulations! You and your fiancé, along with friends and family have been discussing your wedding plans and you are well on your way to that perfect day….or are you? The fact is, the date you set for your wedding, be it a month from now or a year, is going to come and there are scores of details that you are checking off your list. While no one wants to think about something major going wrong with your event, things sometimes can and do cause weddings and events to go awry. Perhaps it is not a bad idea to consider wedding or event insurance. Never heard of it? Just Google the term “wedding insurance” and you will find a host of listings and companies that provide this kind of coverage. You may be thinking to yourself that something that big wouldn’t happen to my wedding, but the reality is, it could. Think about it for just a moment. Large weather events do happen in prime wedding months and few parts of the country are immune. An additional concern is the reality of uncertain economic times. Many wedding venues have abruptly closed their doors, leaving the bride in the lurch. In some instances, the venue may have changed hands; changing so drastically, that the venue is not what you signed up for in the first place. It is a possibility that they simply aren’t going to continue weddings and events. Family emergencies are also possible issues that can disrupt future plans. For these reasons, it is a good idea, if for nothing more than peace of mind, to check into wedding or event insurance. But be sure to do your homework and check out the company’s reputations offering the insurance policies. Just because a company is at the top of the page is no guarantee a particular company is good or better than another. Check to make sure you are clear on what is being covered and most importantly, what is not. Talk with your insurance agent. The company you deal with already may have a policy that will work for you or your agent may be able to help you find a policy that is the best fit. In most cases, given the overall budget of a wedding, the cost of insuring your event can be a mere fraction of the investment you are making in your dream day. Chances are your wedding or event will be everything you hoped for, but just in case, there is the assurance and peace of mind that comes with insurance.^

^ Colton Ellis

WEDDING DATE: April 25, 2015

Wonderful things seem to happen as the magic of the Holidays that accompany the month of December lift the heart and spirit of all those who partake of its many gifts. A little of this magic would fall upon Courtney and Colton one December night in 2013. The two, dressed up for a nice dinner and a rousing Trans Siberian Orchestra concert befitting the time, would step right into, what would most certainly be, a magical night. After the concert, the two were to meet up with some of Colton’s family. At least that was what Courtney thought. Colton was really taking her to a special place where he would ask if they could spend the rest of their lives together. The two would celebrate their newly minted engagement at a surprise party where they would share and revel in the magic of what will become their new lives together as husband and wife. On the 25th of April, 2015, Courtney and Colton will pledge their love, lives and faith to each other at Southern Hills Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

^ Cody Booms

WEDDING DATE: July 25, 2015

On July 25, 2015, Jennifer Ellen Glick and Cody Lee Booms will say their vows and commit their lives to each other in the gardens at Coles Garden in Oklahoma City. This sweet and vibrant couple met in the summer of 2009. They were sixteen and seventeen at the time while attending a bonfire on the Canadian River with friends. Amidst the warm, flickering glow of a summer bonfire, Cody and Jennifer met for the very first time. Their relationship grew and their love became stronger over the next few years. Cody, very much in love with Jennifer, knew the time was right to pop the question. The day would come. A summer’s day, not unlike the day they met, that after going out for a casual dinner, Cody would ask if Jennifer would like to go ride ATV’s on the river. On that June evening in the summer of 2014, the smoldering memories of another summer’s evening would burn as brightly as the bonfire that lit the first moments they laid eyes on each other. It was at the very spot where they met, 5 years earlier, that Cody would kneel down and ask Jennifer to be his bride.

Stephanie Pietsch ^ Chad Keck WEDDING DATE: April 11, 2015

Plucking up the courage to ask that special someone to spend the rest of their lives with you is not always the easiest of tasks. But before you can even do that, you have to find the intestinal fortitude to ask that person out to begin with. While in college, Stephanie worked summers at a gym. It was during this time that she and Chad actually met, and after several weeks of talking to her, finally "worked up the nerve to ask me out." Now Chad seems to be a little accident prone as Stephanie relates "he's always getting injured." But it would seem that this propensity for injury might be a good ruse to couch a proposal in. So Chad wanted to fake an injury out at the lake in hopes of getting her out there to propose. However, this was not to be as Stephanie ended up with a migraine that day. Change of plan! So nervously, Chad waited at the front door for her to arrive home from work and he then asked her to be his bride. So it will be, on April 11, 2015, Stephanie and Chad will say their vows and spend the rest of their lives together!

^ Charlie Nguyen

WEDDING DATE: May 16, 2015

Sometimes the chemistry is so great between two people that even after just meeting, a great connection is felt. For Katherine and Charlie, when they met 9 years ago at the University of Oklahoma, it was as if they had already known each other for years. At the time, Charlie was in a fraternity and Katherine was pledging a sorority. It was during a mixer that Charlie approached her, started talking and after that, the two knew they were meant to be together. Fast forward from 2006 to a February morning in 2014. That particular morning, Katherine was getting their two dogs, Benny and Ellie, ready for their daily walk. Loving their dogs dearly, Charlie wanted to incorporate them into this very special morning. “Charlie slipped the engagement ring on Ellie’s collar knowing I would find it.” She put on the leash and saw the ring. Turning around, “Charlie was on one knee asking me to spend every day from now until forever with him.” “Of course I said YES!” In a Radiant Orchard themed, May 16th, 2015 wedding, Katherine and Charlie will begin forever together. The ceremony will be at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, with the reception at Hy Palace Restaurant.

The blind date and turkey legs! What could the two possibly have in common? Well firstly, we all know about blind dates, and many of us have experienced them. Some even fear them. But for Jenifer and Mark, a blind date would be the first step to a life long commitment of love. What about the turkey legs you ask? It was because of a conversation about them at lunch one day, which was overheard by Jenifer’s sister in law, who works with Mark. Knowing how much Jenifer loves turkey legs, she decided to tell Mark about the perfect girl for him! A few weeks later they had their first date. Jenifer sent the waitress to “check Mark out to see if he looked friendly or not.” It is safe to say, that he looked friendly and from there, a relationship blossomed. As their relationship grew, the time had come that Mark was ready to pop the question. One evening, he told Jenifer he was taking her out to a nice dinner and that he was going to take everything she needed to the bathroom she would need to get ready. He also asked her not to come out until he said it was ok. After a while, Mark finally asked her to come out. The first thing she laid eyes on were all of the love notes she had written to him over the years. Turning, she saw a sign that said “call the boys.” The “boys” are their dogs. When the dogs arrived, they were adorned with heart shaped signs that said “I love you.” He then took the dogs outside and waited for her. Jenifer recalls that “after saying some very lovely, dovey words,” he “got down on one knee as asked.” She recalls that at that point, she “ugly cried.” Deciding to hold off telling anyone until afterwards, the newly engaged couple went on to dinner. But Mark had let others in on his plans and when they arrived, both were greeted by all of Jenifer’s family waiting to celebrate! A simple, yet elegant affair was in Jenifer’s mind for her wedding day and the Golf Club of Oklahoma lent itself to filling the bill. She recalls of the day that it was “Amazing!” and “better than we could have ever imagined. Jenifer has one piece of advice for every bride. “Once the day of your wedding arrives, quit worrying about the little details.” She adds, “if it’s

something the really needs to be done, ask someone else to do it.” Finally, leaving us with “Just relax and enjoy this moment.”

Mike Mezuel II In a beautiful Costa Rica destination wedding, surrounded by friends and family, Alex and Taylor committed their lives and love to one another in what Alex would describe as a day that was easy going and full of fun, happy memories. Over the course of their relationship, the two would develop a bucket list together. Taylor would make dreams come true as he wove that list together with his desire to propose to Alex. On a summer trip to Colorado to “take in the scenery and check off white water rafting from our bucket list,” Taylor’s plan was in motion. During their trip, Alex’s birthday weekend also fell so Taylor planned a nice dinner in Breckenridge to celebrate. Ah, but he didn’t propose at dinner. Unbeknownst to Alex, Taylor booked a hot air balloon ride for the next morning. Fortunately, the morning was clear and they took off bright and early in order to see the breathtaking sight of the sunrise over the mountains. Amidst the grandeur of seeing the world from on high, and Alex totally not expecting it, Taylor gets down on one knee and asks the most important question of their lives! She was excited to say yes and check another item off their bucket list! The vision for their wedding was born out of a simple desire to have “something intimate, easy and fun for all.” They really just wanted to, in a “spectacular place,” spend time with their closest family and friends. Before the wedding they even had the opportunity to take pictures and enjoy the scenery of Costa Rica and witness a magical, double rainbow on their wedding day. Alex relates that “we learned that at the end of the day, you have to do what’s best for you.” She further adds, “a destination wedding was perfect for us and it was something we will never forget.” Alex recommends having a wedding planner as they “helped us not only with the ceremony, but arranging travel for all our guests.” Not having to spend a lot of time worrying about the things they couldn’t control allowed Alex and Taylor to “enjoy making memories together.” Alex adds that “the best part was that we were surrounded by family and friends and knew that we were blessed to have found each other.”

A new year. These three words bring to mind resolutions and thoughts of what may lay in store for us as the calendar tips into the future, and with that new year, comes the promise of renewal and thoughts of what can be. For Jennifer, the New Year would bring more than just the hopes of resolutions, it came with a promise. It was the very first day of a new year that would change her life forever as this young couple overlooked downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma from the balcony of a restaurant. It was a momentous day, one that virtually everyone around the globe celebrates. It was January 1st, 2014, New Year's Day. There, from high upon their balcony perch, the city skyline sparkling as if it was just for them, Nathan asked Jennifer to be his bride. Hiding in the lobby of the restaurant, waiting until he would ask for her hand, family and friends could see this incredible moment unfold. Witnessing, right before their eyes, lives changing and embarking on a wonderful journey together. Of this night, Jennifer said "An ordinary evening out turned into a wedding proposal and an engagement party with everyone we love. A great start to a new year!" But this was just the beginning. There was a wedding to plan and a strong desire to stay true themselves by infusing an elegant wedding into a natural setting. The sprawling, natural beauty of a native and natural setting at Cherokee Spur Ranch allowed Jennifer and Nathan to create "a simple statement that grabbed the attention of guests but let the beautiful surroundings...speak for itself." Filled with many textures and soft, elegant colors created harmony with the majesty of the setting sun and "left a peaceful atmosphere for our special day." Adding to the elegance of the setting, Jennifer played off the colors found in a soft, Mother of Pearl palette and incorporated mercury glass pieces in champagne, gold and silver. Floral arrangements and layered candles created warmth and depth for additional pops of visual interest. "Planning our wedding was a journey of discovery as a couple and helped us learn communication, so be sure to include your spouse." Jennifer suggests. She reminds us to "Above all... HAVE FUN!" "To be who you are in every aspect of your wedding." She adds, "Follow your fancy at the time in choosing a venue, wedding style, colors and decor but keep your budget in mind." On her wedding day, Jennifer felt ready! "I was excited that the hard work and vision was a reality." It indeed was a reality and the day was perfect for her wedding. "I felt pretty and was surrounded by the people I love." It was this day that she was able to have "a special moment where I felt joy in my heart and was able to pledge my love to an amazing man." She recalls the gratitude she felt that the two of them "included God throughout the journey, because it was peaceful, fun and turned out better than we could have imagined. January 1, 2014 was a date that their lives began to change forever. A new year full of promise. It was on May 3, 2014 that, in front of family, friends, Nature and God that they would begin to fulfill the promises made that New Year's day and embark on the greatest journey, together. "(it) was one of the most incredible moments of my life!

Jennifer Biby ^Brent Hendrix September 27, 2014

A rustic, backyard wedding was the inspiration and dream for Jennifer. The Home Place Country Estate fit her desires to a tee but on a larger scale. Quintessentially Oklahoma, this beautiful, rustic farm/ranch brought out all of the romance and warmth of a hometown, backyard wedding. Their wedding was filled with heirlooms, personal items and "one of a kind decorations that had meaning to our lives, bringing two families together as one." These vignettes displayed who this couple is, and one could not help but feel that perhaps, in some way, you were in something of a time warp that whisked you away to a simpler, sweeter time in rural America.

Colorband PhotoArtisans

www.colorbandphotoartisans.com

Basking in a breezy, cool yet sunny Oklahoma evening, friends and family witnessed Jennifer and Brent say their vows and commit their lives to each other. A beautiful setting that truly felt as if it was meant to be for them, and was exactly as the world should be. The long shadows of a setting sun set the stage for the beautiful, rustic slice of Americana that would become their reception. As the night embraced the moment, the warm, soft glow of hundreds of lighted orbs continued to cast their spell on all who were beneath them.

132 BridalifeStyle Magazine Fall/Winter 2014 | BRIDALIFESTYLE.COM

Before this amazing day was to be, Jennifer and Brent met through mutual friends and their relationship grew. It was on Valentine's day in 2014 that the two, at Brent's behest, would go up to her family's lake cabin. Wanting to surprise her, he attempted to take her to the beach and tie the ring to their dog Buster's collar. Unfortunately this didn't work out and another attempt was made by tying the ring to a tree. Even the best laid plans don't always work out as he was simply unable to get her to the locations he had planned without spoiling the surprise. Not to let this sway him however, he was able to finally propose at their home in which they now share. Of her wedding Jennifer reveals that "it was an overwhelming/ sensational and incredible experience we will never forget." She adds that "Brent and I learned that through all the long process of planning...no matter what happened or how our wedding turned out, the most important thing would take place and that was getting to say our vows and spend the rest of our lives together."

Tonya Montgomery ^ Donald Aaron Jr. August 30, 2014

Colorband PhotoArtisans

Tonya's wedding gown was just as unconventional as the bride herself and equally spectacular. Created by Moe of Bridal Maison, her stunningly elegant, layered, silver taffeta wedding gown was an absolutely beautiful and contemporary creation that literally let Tonya sparkle with excitement. As she entered the room, the excitement was palpable as everyone laid eyes on her in her fabulous wedding dress. You could see her joy through the tears as she knew her true love and entire future awaited her at the other end of the aisle.

www.colorbandphotoartisans.com

It was on the 30th of August, 2014 that Tonya and Donald tied the knot in the grand ballroom at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Norman, Oklahoma. The wedding, filled with over the top love from both families as the story of their love was told by friends and family through readings and song. There was no question that this was Tonya and Donald's wedding as their sense of style was on display including classic tuxedos and floor length gowns.

But this blessed wedding day didn't just happen. It took a while to get here, as the couple met 7 years earlier when Donald, an HVAC tech, made a house call to Tonya's parents. Perhaps, when the air conditioning goes down, it isn't always a bad thing. Fast forward to Tonya's 40th birthday, as she and her parents were heading out to a birthday luncheon, Donald dropped by to see her before they left. He asked for a glass of water and as she opened the refrigerator door, "there was a box with a ring in it, on the top shelf." She turned around and there was Donald on one knee. Tonya recalls the sensation of being overwhelmed by it all as "all of my hopes, dreams and love for Donald came together, all at once. I couldn't believe it was happening." Planning a wedding can certainly be filled with ups, downs and frustrations galore. However, of her wedding, Tonya says that "All of the frustration was worth bringing our family and friends together to share the love we have for each other and for them."
