Bride : Kristina Frykstad, 37 Groom : Peter Miranda, 38 Home : Australia Venue : The Swedish Church In London, Harcourt Street, London, W1H 4AG, and O Fado, Beauchamp Place, Knightsbridge, London, SW3 1NY Date : Saturday January 9, 2010
The beginning… SWEDISH model Kristina Frykstad met photographer and future husband Peter Miranda through work when they both moved to Australia. After a year of working together, the couple finally got together romantically. Kristina said simply: “Pete is just a lovely man. He took me out on a date and it was just beautiful.” As a leap year day baby, Peter had always joked that he expected Kristina to propose to him on February 29 – his birthday and the day women are traditionally expected to propose. But, in June 2008, the pair were on a flight to visit Kristina’s family in Sweden when Peter’s own engagement plans were almost thwarted by his fiancé-to-be’s indecision. She said: “Pete had arranged with the air hostesses to put the box with the engagement ring in it on my dinner tray. But, as they handed me my tray, I changed my mind about what meal I wanted, so they had to take it back! Luckily, they were alert and thought to put the ring onto the tray I did take. Pete looked a bit shocked for a moment! I didn’t actually realise it was a ring at first. I thought how lovely that the women were getting a gift from the airline! It was a lovely surprise and a perfect trip.” During a Christmas and New Year trip to visit friends and family in Sweden, Kristina was unaware a hen party had been planned for her. As she was awaiting the delivery of her wedding dress in Stockholm, she was not able to confirm what day she would be arriving with her family nearby so the plans were thrown into chaos. Kristina said: “When we did finally arrive, 20 of my friends turned up in the hallway and took me out. I got to record an Abba song at a recording studio – my friends are good singers, but I am not so that was a good laugh!” The girls then had lunch and went to an art studio where they enjoyed cheese and wine and the opportunity to create their own picture. Peter decided not to have a stag party ahead of the wedding.
The big day… As the couple were brought from Australia to London for Kristina’s work, it was decided it would be ideal to get married in the UK to allow guests from Sweden and Peter’s homeland of Portugal to make the shorter journey to join them. Keeping their own cultures alive through their wedding, they decided to say their vows at the Swedish Church In London, where they were traditionally showered in rice, before taking their 40 guests for a traditional Portuguese meal at O Fado restaurant, in Knightsbridge.
Real Wedding
Kristina ordered her wedding dress from an online company through Ebay, sending off her measurements and arranging to have it delivered to Sweden. As an emergency back-up plan, Kristina had also arranged to have her mother’s wedding dress as an option. She said: “My dress was ivory, embroidered, long at the back with a thin layer of lace over the top with pearls. It had a V-neck with two straps and small buttons down the back.” Her bridesmaids - best friends Kim Norman and Astrid Hosslagare who flew over from Sweden for the wedding wore cappuccino-coloured, long, halter-
neck dresses and all the girls carried different coloured roses. They all got ready at the Sanctum Soho Hotel where a hairdresser, make-up artist and photographer were on hand to prepare for the day ahead. Peter’s friend Jean Da Silva acted as witness on the day while another friend, Nina Hatchwell, performed a song she had written herself as the couple walked down the aisle. At the meal, guests were treated to a large selection of Portuguese dishes to try. Kristina said: “Food is a huge part of Portuguese culture so we wanted to reflect that. We started with a selection of entres being served, before big platters of chicken, seafood, lamb, soup and desserts were brought to the table.” Kristina has her own cake business so was able to make her own three-tier cake, decorated with fondant and butterflies and the letters K and P in melted sugar to sit on the top.
Lasting memories… As Peter’s parents were not able to fly to London for the big day, an online live streaming was set up so they could watch the day unfold from home. The couple spent their honeymoon in Iceland, the Blue Lagoon, New York and Hong Kong before returning home to Australia where they plan to hold a wedding reception with the friends and family who were not able to come to London. Katrina said the small and intimate wedding was just how they wanted it: “The best thing was having the family around on the day with so many people travelling from Sweden to be with us. Of course we keep in touch with everyone via email and online, but to actually get to see each other in reality, that’s something else. It was such a special day; we could not have wished for anything else.”

I can’t stop having thoughts about everything at my wedding going wrong! I have pretty much got everything arranged and sorted out, but I still keep getting visions of the day being a disaster! Is there anything you can suggest to help as the wedding is only a few weeks away and closing in fast? Jane, from Leigh Life coach Steve Roach says - There is a fantastic exercise you can do to help replace the negative thoughts with positive good feeling thoughts, called Scripting. Imagine the pen you are using is magical. Everything the pen writes will come to life exactly the way it is written. Write the story of how your dream wedding day would go, as if it’s a play. You are the main character, include all the other major characters. Write how beautiful the bride looks in her dress, how everyone is having a great time, how great the food tastes etc. Write about everything you WANT to happen; your emotions, what you see, what you hear....everything! When you've finished scripting the day, end with you looking back on the day with total contentment. Just writing the script should put a smile on your face, but then read through it a few times and try to recreate the wonderful feelings you would feel as everything is unfolding just as you have written and your wedding day is going perfectly. Once you feel comfortable with your script and can memorize it as best as possible, the final step is to close your eyes and imagine stepping into the main character’s shoes. Feel what she feels, hear what she hears, see what she sees and even smell what she smells. Get those great feelings running through your body! If a negative thought about your wedding pops into your head, read through it again and visualize everything going just perfectly. Whenever you get the time, practise it and make those great feelings even more intense!
IS greasy hair threatening to ruin your day? Or is the organisation of such a major event causing you stress? Whatever your worry, Brides etc has the answers thanks to our very own experts who are ready and waiting to hear from you.
I have really oily skin and my make-up never stays in place, it always looks shiny and disappears very quickly. Karen, from Chelmsford Kirsty Dobson, of Bespoke Makeovers, says - For oily skin, go for Oil Free Mattifying lotions to minimise shine. Look around and find one within your price range. Two examples are Clarins Ultra-Matte Rebalancing Lotion or Boots Skin Clear Oil Free Mattifying Lotion. Then go over the top with your Primer again, look out for one that's oil free, like Laura Mercier Foundation Primer Oil Free. I have four bridesmaids who all need their hair doing on the wedding day. I am worried about how I should go about planning what to do with their hair for the day. Can you give me some tips? Jenny, from Laindon Sara Marshall, of Occasions Hairdressing, says First of all you need to get your own hair design sorted out. Your wedding hairdresser will help you with the timings and hair care at your trial. Maybe take one of your bridesmaids along with you so you can get ideas from your hairdresser. Discuss with your bridesmaids the sort of looks they like as well as the theme of your wedding. Make decisions with them and your stylist about the finished look and if they will be wearing anything in their hair. Make sure everyone is clear whether the hair should be wet or dry when the stylist arrives and that they are aware of the plans and schedule for the day. Remember after all the months of planning, the only thing left to do on the day is get ready, so good planning makes it the best getting ready ever! My wedding is two months away and I really want to lose a stone in weight so I look good in my dress. I’ve always struggled to lose weight before, though. Is there any advice you could give me? Helen, from Chigwell Life coach Steve Roach says - Our minds work in pictures. You have a thought and the mind creates an image of it, so it’s important to create the images we want in our thoughts rather than
| pg 24
My future mother-in-law has been doing a lot of work to help me organise my wedding day. This is great, except she has started making decisions without asking me. So far, they have only been small bits and pieces, but I’m worried my wedding will turn into what she wants rather than what I want! I’ve never been good at asserting myself and I don’t want to upset her as I’m grateful for all her help. What should I do? Maria, from Chelmsford ones we don’t. If I told you NOT to think of an elephant, the first thing that normally pops into people’s minds is the image of an elephant. If you look at your question, you say you want to “lose weight”. When you mind processes this, it creates pictures of you being overweight and not looking good in your dress, making it harder to motivate yourself. Instead, think: “On my wedding day, I want to be the perfect size and weight to look great in my dress.” This creates images in your mind of you looking fantastic in your dress, far more motivating. Also chop your goal into smaller pieces. Losing a stone in ten weeks can seem a big challenge. Instead, set yourself targets of two pounds each week, which is far more achievable. Ask your GP about ways to exercise and keep your diet healthy. I have open pores. What products can I use to minimise them? Sarah, Shenfield Kirsty Dobson, of Bespoke Makeovers, says - Try Clinique’s Pore Minimiser, Refining Serum - this product works well with all skin types. It’s a lightweight lotion that minimises the appearance of enlarged pores due to excess oil production or ageing skin or take a look at Dr Brandt Space NK Pores No More range recommended to me by Lisa Eldridge from the 10 Years Younger TV Show. You then need a silicone primer as these help cover enlarged pores, acne scars, even fine lines and wrinkles. What should I do first, my hair or my make-up on the wedding day? Maria, from Grays Sara Marshall, of Occasions Hairdressing, says – Well, it depends. If you are going to a salon and having your hair washed, I suggest your make-up is done afterwards. If your stylist is coming to your home or venue, wash your hair in the morning. Your stylist can blow-dry and / or place into heated rollers and then while your hair is cooling you can have your make-up done and have your hair dressed out last. Alternatively, have your make-up done first while your hair can be taken off your face, this is especially helpful if you have a fringe.
| pg 26
Life coach Steve Roach says - Being assertive doesn’t mean you have to be rude or upset people. Often problems occur when a build-up of incidents lead to a desperate pressure release to stand up for yourself and get your point across. The best thing to do is to have a nice quiet chat with her. Explain to her how much you appreciate and are grateful for her help and that you really value her opinions. Then let her know your worries about losing control of how you want your wedding to be and that you really want to be the one who makes the final decision on things. I’m sure she will understand completely, but it’s important to do it now before anymore decisions are made without you. If you let it carry on, you will end up resenting her and exploding when the pressure builds up too much. I have dry skin and my make-up becomes very flaky and sometimes looks patchy. Help! Sally, from Harlow Kirsty Dobson, of Bespoke Makeovers, says - Start out by looking at your skin care routine. Use not only a rich moisturiser, but also try to rehydrate and rebalance your skin. Look at the range by Clarins; they have great products which do both. Then buy your make-up base / primer; this product will stop your skin from drying out and becoming flaky by acting as a barrier not allowing your skin to draw the moisture from your make-up, leaving you to look and feel a lot better. I love both these products - Clarins Beauty Flash Balm, suitable for all skin types, and Face Stockholm’s Perfect Primer, which I work with on a daily basis. It creates a smooth canvas for your foundation, keeping your make-up in place.

About one-third of couples choose to marry in church, while the remainder opt for a civil ceremony. Increasingly, couples choosing a civil ceremony select a venue licensed by Essex County Council for such ceremonies, including hotels, golf and country clubs, country houses and even a castle. But, barns are becoming more and more popular.
On the Essex/Suffolk border at Bulmer, near Sudbury, you will find Smeetham Hall Barn (www.smeethamhall.co.uk). The 16th century listed barn provides a stunning location for your ceremony and reception. The first class facilities provide seating for up to 150 guests and include a marquee, an ideal reception area for drinks and canapĂŠs. The grounds are fronted with a willow-bordered lake with a house and drive that is floodlit at night.
On the outskirts of Kelvedon, Crabbs Barn (www.crabbsbarn.co.uk) is a stunning 15th century restored building set in beautiful gardens overlooking a picturesque pond. The barn has exposed oak beams, vaulted ceiling and French doors on to the veranda overlooking the pond. The venue prides itself on offering excellent cuisine at very reasonable prices. For those requiring overnight accommodation, first class bed and breakfast facilities are offered nearby. CRABBS BARN
Close to Maldon, Vaulty Manor (www.vaultymanor.co.uk) has become a very popular venue. The Manor House is a beautiful 16th century building with a renovated 17th century Essex barn and a spectacular Baronial Hall. The listed barn is beamed and galleried. A special feature at the venue is a formal area for the ceremony and a quiet area offering couples the opportunity to hire the services of a professional pianist using a baby grand piano. High quality accommodation for couples and up to 80 guests is also available at the venue.
CRESSING TEMPLE
At Cressing Temple (www.cressingtemple.org.uk), between Witham and Braintree, you will find two vast barns which date from the early 1200s. The Wheat Barn and Barley Barns have vast timbers which create an awe-inspiring location for couples wishing to accommodate a larger number of guests at their ceremony.
WHERE to say your vows is one of the most important decisions a couple needs to make ahead of their wedding. Roger Robbins, of Essex Registration Service, says barns across Essex are becoming an increasingly popular option. Gaynes Park (www.gaynespark.co.uk) is an exciting barn wedding venue in the grounds of a historic country estate in Epping. The venue is easily accessible from London and offers a choice of ceremony location. There is the Gather Barn, the Mill Barn, supported by four massive tree trunks, and the Orangery. Forrester Park (www.forresterparkltd.com) is in Great Totham and is based around a 16th century barn which was converted into a family home during the last century. It has been sympathetically extended to keep the original character of the building, with exposed oak beams, an open fire and traditional furnishings. Downstairs is the main clubroom with bar, dance floor and cloakrooms, while upstairs is the 120-seater Forresters Restaurant. Forrester Park offers several popular wedding packages, in which all food and wines are included in the package price.
Maidens Barn (www.maidensbarn.com) is only four miles from Great Dunmow and is set in beautiful countryside. The barn has been tastefully renovated to provide a reception hall, raised gallery, bar and kitchen. There is seating for up to 200 with a spacious dance area. Space can be personalised to provide an intimate setting for smaller groups. MAIDENS BARN

Near Ongar, the impressive Blake Hall (www.blakehall.net) dates from 1642 and is believed to have been a meeting place for Round Head troops. It can now cater for large wedding parties in its barn. At the venue, you will find a sunken garden, herbaceous border, wild areas and an arboretum. With 25 acres of beautiful gardens, couples have endless backdrops for those all important wedding photographs. The barn caters for 150 people. Two new additions to the estate are the old Coach House, which has been brought back to life having sat derelict for many years, and the Saddlery. A former disused barn, the Saddlery has now been transformed into an area to host outdoor ceremonies. With its new civil wedding licence and speaker system, the barn is now fully equipped to cater for summer weddings in the sunshine. Rachel Capel Cure said: “It provides us with another building to host ceremonies, to be used for outside drinks or even a crèche. If it was a small wedding, they could be catered for completely inside the Saddlery.” The old Coach House was a crumbling building not used for about 20 years on the Blake Hall estate. It has now been completely transformed to offer a unique opportunity to wedding parties. Rachel said: “Brides can spend the night before their wedding in the cottage along with their mothers and bridesmaids. There are three bedrooms, sleeping six people, as well as a dressing room for the bride on her big day. The cottage also has BLAKE HALL everything else you would expect, a lounge, a kitchen, a bathroom and a garden. Everything has been carefully planned out, including hooks around the rooms for all the dresses to be hung up. Newlyweds can then spend their wedding night in the cottage and we will supply a breakfast box to them in an outdoor building so we do not have to disturb them. It will simply be there waiting for them when they want it.”

SOMETHING old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a silver sixpence in her shoe. Every bride adheres to these age-old traditions for fear of something going wrong on their big day if they tempt fate by ignoring them. But there are hundreds more traditions we follow without knowing the reason or the story behind them. And many have been lost in history with only a few remembering them and holding them dear. Brides etc delves into wedding traditions and finds out why we love them.

Although the majority of weddings today are held on a Saturday, it was considered unlucky in the past, as were Fridays – particularly Friday 13. The old rhyme advises weddings in the first half of the week – Monday for wealth Tuesday for health Wednesday the best day of all Thursday for losses Friday for crosses Saturday for no luck at all. Even the month you marry in holds a meaning, highlighted by another rhyme – Married when the year is new, he’ll be loving, kind and true When February birds do mate, you wed nor dread your fate If you wed when March winds blow, joy and sorrow both you’ll know Marry in April when you can, joy for maiden and for man Marry in the month of May and you’ll surely rue the day Marry when June roses grow, over land sea you’ll go Those who in July do wed, must labour for their daily bred Whoever wed in August be, many a change is sure to see Marry in September’s shrine, your living will be rich and fine If in October you do marry, love will come but riches tarry If you wed in bleak November, only joys will come, remember, when December snows fall fast, marry and true love will last May has been seen as an unlucky month to marry for various reasons throughout time. In Pagan times, it was the time of year when the festival of Beltane was celebrated with outdoor orgies so seen to be an unsuitable time to start married life. In Roman times, the Feast of the Dead and the festival of the goddess of chastity were held in May. In Victorian times, churches were full with weddings towards the end of April as people avoided marrying in May. It is thought Queen Victoria forbade her children from marrying in May. Lent was thought an inappropriate time to marry as it is a time of abstinence. June is named after the Roman goddess of love, Juno, so is therefore seen as a lucky month to marry, while the summer in general is considered a good time due to the suns association with fertility. Bride-to-be Danyelle Garside, of Burnham-on-Crouch, said: “The most important part of the day to John and I is the fact we’re getting married in a church. Neither of us are practising Christians, but we went to the same Church of England school and felt a church wedding was the right thing for us. There are so many traditions and so much history associated with church weddings that, for us, getting married in a register office was never an option. Also, the church we are using is in Tillingham, the village where we both grew up, so holds a lot of memories for us and our families – we wouldn’t get married anywhere else!” The well-known Something old… rhyme originates from Victorian times. Something old represents the link with the bride’s family and the past. Many brides choose to wear a
piece of family jewellery or maybe their mother’s wedding dress. Something new represents good fortune and success in the bride’s new life. The bride’s dress is often the ‘new’ item. Something borrowed is a reminder to the bride that her friends and family will always be there for her in her new married life. Again, brides often borrow an item of jewellery. The custom of wearing something blue originates from ancient Israel where the bride wore a blue ribbon in her hair to represent fidelity. If the wedding colour is not blue, a bride can easily include blue on her garter. A silver sixpence in her shoe is to wish the bride wealth, both financially and in life in general. Emma Muir, of A Bespoke Design, said: “My favourite tradition has to be Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue which is probably the most popular tradition in modern times. I guess, in some respects, it is also seen as a superstitious act as every bride wishes for luck and fortune on the biggest day of her life! It lends itself very easily to any type of ceremony or style of wedding. The bride can carry something representing each of the criteria without if affecting the look she is going for. Something Old is without doubt the most treasured aspect, normally a family heirloom or treasure of a close relative.”

Traditionally, a bride wears a white dress to represent maidenhood, a tradition started by the rich in the 16th century. The tradition was given a boost by Queen Victoria who chose to marry in white instead of the traditional Royal bridal colour of silver. Before the white dress, brides wore their best dress in whatever colour they preferred. The groom should not see his bride or her dress before the ceremony. Newly-wed Stacy Wright, 27, of Grays, said: “I love the tradition of the bride not seeing the groom the night before the wedding. The night before I got married, I had a girlie night with my bridesmaids and my mum. We were all really excited about the wedding. Seeing my husband standing at the end of the aisle was the best part of my day and was made all the more special by not having seen him.” Bob Pearson, events assistant at Shire Hall, Chelmsford, said: “For me, the dressing of the bride and groom is so important. It is the chance for a little girl dreaming of her special day to actually live it, in a beautiful gown she has chosen with friends and family. I think the love of his future wife allows the bridegroom to dress to the nines. There is nothing finer on the day than this vision of two people who love each other outshining everyone who has turned up to witness the event.” The Bride’s veil hides the bride’s beauty and wards off evil spirits. Brides were thought to be particularly vulnerable to spirits and many of the traditions centre on protecting her. The veil was originally worn by Roman brides. It was thought it would disguise the bride and therefore outwit the spirits. The garter is traditionally borrowed from a happily married friend in the hope her happiness will be past on to the new bride. Photographer Paul Webb, of Webb Weddings, said:
“The wedding tradition of the bride’s garter seems to be something that now most people do not bother with. Although, that may be just as well as we all remember those cheesy photos of the groom, best man and ushers all lined up looking at the garter from the 1980s!” To some, pearls represent tears and are a bad omen, while others believe they replace the bride’s tears and she’ll therefore have a tear-free married life. It is thought to bring good luck if the bride takes one last look in the mirror before heading for her wedding ceremony. However, if she turns back after beginning her journey to the ceremony for another glance, this is seen as bad luck. Newly-wed Ella Scott, 30, of Harlow, loved the tradition of her father giving her away. She said: “My favourite tradition on my wedding day was being given away by my father. It meant a lot to him to be able to do that for me. Not everyone is able to have that. To give your daughter to her soon-to-be husband must be lovely. And for me, to know I was not on my own walking down the aisle meant a lot. Often, girls are close to their mum, so it’s lovely to have those few moments alone with your dad before your ceremony.” Samantha Wickers, of Loughton, agreed. She said: “My favourite wedding tradition was being walked down the aisle and being given away by my dad. We got married in Barbados in a little gazebo overlooking the beach, so the ‘aisle’ was far from traditional, but dad led me through the hotel gardens, past all the tropical plants until I caught my first glimpse of my husband-to-be and our best friends and family awaiting my arrival. I felt emotional from the first step and remember telling dad to talk to me about mundane things, including the current plot of Coronation Street, to stop me blubbing before the ceremony had even begun!”
The bride stands on the left of her groom during the ceremony to allow his sword arm to be free to fight off other men who may want to take her from him. Michael Stapleton, from Jewellery Rooms, said: “I love the tradition of why the bride stands on the left during the wedding service. It’s steeped in history and romance and conjures up images of kings, queens, castles, knights in shining armour and damsels in distress!” There are contradictory stories surrounding the dropping of the ring. Some say if the ring is dropped it shakes out evil spirits, while the less favourable belief is the person who drops the ring will die first. The ring is worn on the third finger of the left hand as the Romans believed the vein in that finger runs directly to the heart. The ring also represents a never-ending circle, symbolising everlasting love. Couples should wed as the clock’s minute hand is heading upwards as this is said to represent the ascent in a heavenly direction. Marion Cottis, of Poppies Flowers, said: “As a florist, I love a bride carrying flowers. This tradition goes back many years when a couple would get married in their ‘Sunday best’ and the bride would gather flowers from the fields to carry and make a small buttonhole for the groom. In villages, everyone would get involved in decorating the venue with whatever was available at the time of year – the original seasonal flowers. Bouquets are wonderful and when else does a girl get to choose her own flowers?” The bride throwing her bouquet is an American tradition. Roger Robbins, of Essex Registration Service, said: “In days gone by, women would try to rip pieces of the bride’s dress and flowers in order to obtain some of her good luck. To get away from the crowd, the bride would toss her bouquet and run away. Nowadays, the bouquet is tossed to single women with the belief that whoever catches it will be the next to marry.” Confetti is now thrown over the newly weds, but in history rice was thrown to encourage fertility. Guests bring gifts today, but in history would bring fruit to encourage fertility. Favours are little gifts left for the guests at a wedding to remember the day by. Traditionally, couples give five sugared almonds to represent health, wealth, fertility, happiness and long life. Tim Thorogood, of Essence Duo, helps brides and grooms keep the tradition of the first dance. He said: “Many people think it’s the first dance of the evening so are unsure whether they can get up and dance or not. However, it is the first dance the newly-weds have together as husband and wife. We often learn the first dance song and sing it live as this makes it a lot more personal. Other people may prefer the original played as that is the version they are most familiar with. Shyer couples may wish for friends and families to join in halfway through, which is perfectly acceptable.” Singer Craig Neil added: “The best tradition has got to be the first dance; that magical song that 40 years on the married couple can say ‘this is our song’!” If a bride wishes to be the dominating influence in her married life, she must be the first to buy something after the marriage. The best way to ensure this is to buy a pin from the chief bridesmaid when changing into her travelling outfit.
A groom carries his new wife over the threshold to protect her from any evil spirits which may be lurking in the new home. But, Roger Robbins, of Essex Registration Services, said: “Another possible explanation goes back to Roman times where it was thought if the bride was to stumble upon entering the new home for the first time, it would subsequently bring the couple bad luck.”

Tips
for planning your wedding PLANNING the most important day of your life can be stressful. Talking to the experts you employ and following a few easy tips should help to reduce the stress levels, according to Glenys Chatterley of Morestan Event Management & Catering.
Planning a wedding is going to be stressful, however you approach it. However, the more stressed you become, the more it will be stressful. “It is vital to get the important things in place. It is about speaking to the people you are employing and always having a co-ordinator. Do not pick a friend to plan things as they can be overwhelmed by the responsibility or promise things they can’t actually achieve. The co-ordinator will make sure your suppliers are there when they are supposed to be and then nobody in your party is doing anything other than enjoying themselves.” Follow these tips for a less stressful wedding experience – • Check with your venue what they are going to provide. Check any agreements you have got with them. If they provide a co-ordinator, get a list of exactly what they are going to do and when. • Listen to your experts. The people you are paying have done this all before. Even if they have only organised an event like yours a few times, they would have done it far more than you. • Give your photographer a list of what photos you want taking on the day. For example, if you want a photo of you with your nan, make sure the photographer knows that in advance. You do not want them asking you on the day what photos you want taken as the process will be dragged out and the dinner will get cold! • Book everything in a timely manner. The venue, caterers, photographer and florist need to be booked as early as possible. • Ask to see your caterer at work at a similar event. Many caterers provide tastings, but preparing and serving a meal with no pressure for two people is very different to preparing and serving a meal under pressure for 100. At Morestan, we invite clients along to an existing wedding
booking before everyone arrives so they can see how the kitchen is working, chat to the chef and generally get a feel for how the company works. • When planning your table decoration, get a shoe box for each table and fill it with everything you want on that table. This makes it all so much simpler and quicker for the tables to be sorted on the day. • When preparing the seating plan, get a disposable plate to represent each table and put your guests’ names on sticky labels. Then, as you plan each table you stick the labels around the edge of the plates. That way, you can visualise who will be sitting next to each other and recognise any potential problems before it’s too late! It is easier to rearrange your plan in this way, rather than on a list. • Do not ask your guests what their food allergies are. If you have any guests with food allergies, they will make a point of letting you know. Otherwise, you will get the majority of your guests responding with their likes and dislikes, rather than true allergies. We have even had requests in the past to cater for people on Slimming World diet days. • Remember the last week before your wedding is all about making yourself look fabulous so make sure that is all you have left to do. Do not plan to have your nails done and then try to decorate a cake, for example. Remind your groom to have his hair cut two weeks before the day, especially in the summertime so he does not get a tan line. And finally, remember at the end of it all, as long as you, the groom and the person marrying you turns up, it has been a success so relax and enjoy! Nobody will know the full plans for the day, so if anything else goes wrong, nobody will know!
Exceptional events, fantastic food, no glitches! When you’re planning an event there is always a list as long as your arm of things that need to be done. When there is more than one person involved in the planning, things start to slip through the gaps – "I thought you were doing that!" It doesn’t have to be that way. If you put an expert in charge, you’ll find we’ve thought of everything – and know exactly how to ensure you can enjoy your event without worrying about the details."

Before the Ceremony… While you’re putting the finishing touches to your outfit, organising your bridesmaids and getting anxious about the impending biggest moment of your life, your guests are starting to arrive. Many will know each other and will be enjoying a chat about the day ahead, while others could be left standing alone and feeling uncomfortable and lost. Make sure your guests enjoy your day from the moment they arrive by ensuring they are entertained even before the ceremony. Children can find weddings very long and sometimes boring. If you have your own children, they can be taken off your hands from the very start of the day by Artfull Splodgers (www. artfullsplodgers.com), allowing you to focus on just yourself. Nikki Lacey said: “I think our service is crucial if you have your own children at your wedding, so you can just be bride and groom which is very difficult with
a child on your hip. If you are staying at your venue the night before, we are happy to come along and help from the start and even stay overnight to take the children off your hands while you lounge around the next day.”
During the Ceremony…. As your guests take their seats to await the bride’s arrival, there’s no better way to set the romantic mood for the day than with music. With today’s wide variety and flexibility of civil wedding venues, it is possible to have a solo singer, pianist or band play in your ceremony room. Other than religious songs – which are not allowed during civil ceremonies – you are free to have your favourite love songs performed in the lead-up to the bride’s arrival. Singer Stacey McCarthy and musician Colin MacLean make up McCarthy MacLean (www.mm-music.co.uk), offering musical entertainment throughout your day. With influences
including Imelda May, Eva Cassidy and Chet Atkins, the duo can perform your favourite songs while you walk down the aisle and sign the register. Colin said: “We can prepare whatever song the bride and groom wants, sending them a recording or performing for them before the wedding day. Often, a couple will seek advice in choosing specific pieces to best enhance particular points in the day. We can help by suggesting appropriate songs. We offer a variety of formats - for example female vocal with or without acoustic guitar. We might also suggest instrumental guitar music in some circumstances.” Also see www.weddingmusicpips.co.uk One Foot In The Groove (www.onefootinthegroove.co.uk) can also design music to suit you as you walk down the aisle. Louise Perry, lead vocalist, said: “Sometimes the piece will need a singer, while sometimes the bride and groom simply want a saxophone. We work it around their musical tastes. When we do a whole day, it is as if the music never stops. A wedding day can be so disjointed so we try to make sure the day flows from a musical point of view.”
Music : One Foot in The Groove
After the Ceremony, during photos/speeches/meal… Following your ceremony, you may be busy with your photographer for up to two hours – taking you away from the majority of your guests. While some may enjoy celebratory drinks and mingle, this is the time many people can become fidgety or feel in limbo while they await the next formal part of the day. Children can also start to let off steam and may be tempted to run around. Prestige Conjuring (www.prestige-conjuring.co.uk) can help smooth this gap between ceremony and wedding breakfast by keeping all guests entertained with some close-up magic. Magician Paul Clancy is able to move around the groups of guests while they are not featuring in photographs, providing fascinating tricks. He said: “No matter how much planning goes into a big day, there is inevitably moments where guests simply do not know what they should be doing and are left hanging around. With all of your family and friends to keep happy, you do not want a minute of your day to be anything less than magical. I can provide a distraction from the feeling of hanging around and waiting for the photographer to finish his job by mixing and mingling.” Another way of keeping your guests entertained during the photographs and reception drinks is to set up your very own casino! Poker Vision (www.casino-vision.co.uk) can send in its team of croupiers to set up roulette, black jack, poker or craps tables to give all of your guests, no matter what age, something to enjoy. Matthew Farr said: “We can come in and set up before your guests arrive and be waiting when they are ready. We use fun money so no real money changes hands. Therefore, there are no laws stopping play and so children can join in. People do not always realise this and maybe that puts some people off considering it as an option. But the children love it!” You have spent a lot of money on your wedding breakfast and will hang on every word your father and new husband say about you on the day you have spent a lifetime dreaming of. So, the last thing anybody wants is fed-up, screaming children to spoil the moment. Artfull Splodgers can step in and take the youngsters off to enjoy a more appropriate – and less expensive – meal and also have fun. Nikki Lacey said: “Lots of brides and grooms say they want the children in the room with them. But, we believe children are far happier to come away and have a picnic lunch in their own space. They are not usually interested in the expensive posh meals which can be served at weddings and the sit-down session can last for far too long for a child. So, save money on the meals and make room for extra guests by letting us take care of the children. And does anyone want to worry about their expensive outfits being covered in their child’s food?” During courses of your wedding breakfast, magician Paul Clancy can also step back in to help break the ice between guests. He said: “I can go from table to table giving each group their own magic show, being careful not to interrupt them while eating. Often, this is the only time the top table get to see the magic as they will have missed it while having their photographs taken. I judge each table by the ages of people and what I think they will want to see. It is all interactive – it all happens in their own hands. Often, there will be people sharing a table who do not know each other, so I can help break the ice by giving them something to talk about.” During the speeches, Paul can also take the youngest guests to another

room to provide them with their own entertainment with either magic or balloon modelling, depending on the age range. Light background music can be provided by McCarthy MacLean. Colin MacLean said: “By performing some easy listening music, we help the guests who do not know each other to relax. Our customers often compliment Staceys gentle vocal delivery and tell us they feel their guests will want to talk about it, thus initiating conversation. It encourages people to interact. Louise Perry, at One Foot In The Groove, agrees but adds: “We advise couples to not have vocals during the wedding breakfast as people are trying to talk. It is lovely to have music in the background as people do not always know each other so straight away there’s a musical talking point. It also helps to lift the atmosphere.” Once the meal has been eaten and the speeches completed, the guests will often have to move to another room while the venue is transformed ready for the reception and evening entertainment. Again, this can be a time when your guests are left to linger, not knowing quite where to go or what to do. Plus, evening guests will start to arrive so it is vital to ensure there is not a lull in the atmosphere of the day. Magician Paul Clancy said: “I can close this gap between the speeches and the evening reception and help keep the merriment going. I am flexible enough t o o ff e r w h a t e v e r the bride and groom would like, providing magic or balloon modelling whenever they feel i t ’s a p p r o p r i a t e . ”
As guests begin to arrive for the reception, McCarthy MacLean can provide some background music. Colin MacLean said: “People often like to have a duo performing as the guests arrive for the reception. We can then perform lighter jazz, swing and popular music, such as Fly Me To The Moon, to bring a bit of life. When we move into the full evening reception, we can get more lively with a disco, which we also offer. We can tie in with a disco or provide three sets of live music throughout – with popular classics, soul and Motown and rock and pop.” Couples who have got married in Las Vegas often choose to have the casino tables at their UK reception. Matthew Farr, of Poker Vision, said: “If the wedding has a casino or Las Vegas theme, we are able to provide props as well as the tables. There are so many different ways for us to work. We can work at any venue and set up in the main room along with the disco or in a side room. Children who are wanting to settle down later in the day can be taken care of by Artfull Splodgers. Nikki Lacey said: “Some people book a quiet area for us where children can come and sleep, have a story or watch a DVD. We offer a babysitting service so the children do not feel they are being put to bed or excluded. We fill the room with a big play area and get different bits out as we go along. Once we have got the babies settled, we can do things like jewellery making with the older children.”
“People often like to have a duo performing as the guests arrive for the reception.”

Guests can also enjoy the casino tables during this gap in proceedings. Matthew Farr, of Poker Vision, said: “Some brides and grooms provide their guests with a stack of fun money at the dinner table to use on the tables later. We are able to personalise this money with photos or words, if that is what the bride and groom want. The guest who accumulates the most chips by the end of the day can win a prize.” Poker Vision can provide up to six tables and usually sets up for up to three hours.
The play list for band One Foot In The Groove is endless, enabling them to cater for all wedding parties. Louise Perry said: “Because we only use professionals, our play list is almost endless in terms of what we can do during the day. rs ge We can perform traditional Rat Pack music or songs from the more modern Nora Jones. I liaise with the bride and groom from the start so get a feel for what they like and can then recommend what they
have. They can have anything up to a nine-piece band with percussion, depending on the budget.” Also see: www.mojo6.co.uk and www.essencemusic agency.com

Baddow Park Wedding Venue Dear Vanessa, As we are just into our second full year of advertising our property as a wedding Venue, we decided to take a stand at the Wedding Venue and Services Show at the Shire Hall, in Chelmsford, organised by the Main Event Company. We also placed an advertisement in the new free bridal magazine, Brides Etc, where they produced a special Wedding Venue feature with some editorial. I have been delighted with my response from the magazine and the wedding venue show. The show and magazine have both proved to be successful, resulting in bookings and visits to my venue. The Main Event Company organisation was very efficient and pleasant to deal with and the show was altogether a very useful, well organised and well attended event. I was also delighted with the magazine; not only the quality, but the overall presentation of my editorial and my advert has certainly produced a very good response and bookings. I would not hesitate to recommend the Main Event Company wedding shows and the magazine. Thank you girls for all your help and assistance and making my venue stand out as a great choice for brides! Kind regards Annie Heilijgers

Win £400 towards a 3-Tier Bespoke Wedding Cake
Brides Etc have £400 towards your wedding cake, thanks to The Cake Table (www.thecaketable.co.uk). The creative experts at The Cake Table can take on board all your ideas and desires and turn them into a delicious cake for your big day! Providing you with a sketch of a bespoke cake designed just for you, they will then set to work in bringing the picture to life. Our competition will see one lucky reader able to work with The Cake Table to create a bespoke three-tier cake. The prize also includes the cake being set up by The Cake Table at your venue for FREE, within a 30-mile radius of Braintree. Marion Dale, of The Cake Table, said: “We will ask the lucky bride and groom lots of questions and give them samples of cake flavours to try. We will take as much information from them as possible before we start to design their cake, so we can work with them to create a stunning centrepiece that truly reflects their personality. “We will then email your design sketch for approval. For wedding cakes which require sugar flowers, we will liaise with the florist to ensure everything will match and blend with the theme. We will also require swatches of bridesmaids’ dresses – we don’t leave anything to chance as we want to ensure everything is perfect on your special day.”

Success o f
WORKING with the beauty and aroma of flowers may seem like one of the greatest jobs. But, as Karen Wall, of Feast of flowers, explains, it’s a dusk ‘til dawn profession. I can’t get enough of flowers. If I’m not designing arrangements, I am talking or thinking about them! For me, being a wedding florist means I can work closely with brides to achieve flowers for the most important day of their life in beautiful venues, while meeting lots of nice people. Working from home means I have no overheads, so my charges are competitive with no compromise on service. It’s great to create floral displays with real impact, but I also regard the fragrance is just as important as the structure. I was recently told by an acquaintance she was given a posy of freesias when she was just five years of age and she can remember the aroma even now.
From Dawn ‘Til Dusk
On the day of a wedding, I often start work as early as 5am, depending on the amount of work involved. I am a morning person which helps, but don’t expect me to be awake much after 10pm! When everything is ready, we pack the floral displays into the van, then head off before the traffic builds up. We may be delivering bridal bouquets to the bride’s or parents’ home or if the ceremony is taking place at the venue, there may be a bridal room provided. This is usually a hive of activity with the bridal party all having their hair and make-up done. When I arrive with my basket containing the bouquets, there is usually a gasp from the women. I see the delight on their faces and I just know I am in the right job!
It’s then time to set up at the venue with everyone buzzing around doing their jobs, cakes being delivered, the chinking of champagne glasses being set out; it’s a lovely atmosphere. A few hours later, when the guests just start to arrive, everything is calm, staff in place, diamantes sparkle in roses, juggs of Pimms being poured and the harpist is poised in position.
A Special Day
When I was asked to do the flowers for Lucy and Kwan at Gaynes Park, we sat down together and discussed all their requirements. Lucy knew she wanted to be different with her choice of flowers and was particularly attracted to some photos I showed her of some bright tropical flowers, lilies, orchids, etc. Two days before the wedding, I took delivery of the flowers, conditioned them and stored them in my cold room. Everything was prepared in my workshop days in advance. I called Lucy and reassured her everything was well and she was pleased and excited about seeing the flowers. The day before the wedding, my assistant Linda came to help me make the flower arrangements. It makes a nice change to work with tropical flowers and after several cups of tea, lots of chat, ten tables centres, two thank-you bouquets and a top table arrangement, we were finished for the day! The morning of the wedding, I was up at 6am to make Lucy’s shower bouquet and Linda arrived later to make 93 gerbera buttonholes and the hair flowers. We dropped off at the church in Epping and on to the bride’s house, then finally to Gaynes Park where we wired some gerberas on to invisible wire to hang from the balcony, dress the cake with flowers and set out the tables centres. As we travelled home, we reflected on the day and although I was sad it was all over, I was satisfied it all went well and already began to think about the next one. Visit www.feastofflowers.co.uk
Blooms
B E S T
AS the summer wedding season gets under way, Marion Cottis, of Poppies Flowers, takes a look at this season’s best blooms. After such a long cold winter, it is wonderful to be thinking of all those summer weddings we have coming up and there are some great ideas you can use to decorate your venue and utilise all those beautiful summer flowers. If you are looking for a very natural style of wedding with perhaps a country theme – maybe your wedding is in a barn or marquee - using summer annuals gives you that picked-from-the-field look easily. Choose tall stunning Delphiniums in white or blue, Delicate Nigella (Love in a Mist), Scabiosa in purple and white, delicately scented Stocks, Larkspur, Sarah Bernhardt Paeonias with silvery grey foliage of Eucalyptus or add a flower/foliage like Bupleurum. These flowers look best if used in a very natural way and you can see from the photo here (taken at Gaynes Park, near Epping) how superb they look within the barn setting. This arrangement has used an eclectic mix of containers from cut glass cake stands, small bud vases and tall glass lily vases. I have brides this year who are collecting their own containers from car boot sales and antique markets. It does not matter if they are not all the same container, as long as there is a theme in the flowers and maybe they will all be ceramic or all glass. If you are looking for a more vintage look, you could add pale pinks and lilacs or pearls to the flowers. You could always use terracotta pots as we did in this arrangement and don’t forget all those little detail vases, a small bud vase on a shelf or window sill (These can be made just using a small amount of flowers the same as your bouquet). For bouquets of summer flowers, try a simple loose style hand tied bouquet using similar flowers to that in your tables. Think soft and with texture, delicate and blowsy. YOU have a plan in your mind’s eye of how your wedding venue will look. You picture stunning candelabras and butterflies. You want bunting and table confetti. But, where will you start to find the items needed to make your dream a reality? Wedding florists Elegance Flowers (www.elegance-flowers.co.uk) realised there was a need to offer brides and grooms a place to find those all-important finishing touches, so launched Elegance Accessories. Based at Newland Hall, in Roxwell, the shop is open every Saturday for couples to make appointments to view its wares. As well as selling finishing touches including confetti, favours, handmade jewellery and stationery and guest books, Elegance Accessories also has a wide range of vases and candelabras for hire or sale. Donna Holley said: “We have been running our wedding flower business for six years and have a great reputation and are award-winning. People come to us to ask where they can get these little finishing touches, so we thought it made sense to provide those items ourselves. With our vases and candelabras, we were buying them to use once and then didn’t need them so thought we may as well sell them or hire them out. They are so beautiful they could be used on their

own with just a few flowers or candles. So many people are watching their money at the moment so this gives them an affordable way to decorate their venue. “If we have not got what you are after, we are happy to source it for you. We like to offer a personal touch and go out of our way to help people.” Items can be hired from as little as £5. The shop opens on Saturdays from 10am to 4pm.

The Master Plan Put some fun into your wedding by planning it around a theme. Whether you and your partner are golf fans or enjoy funfair rides, it is possible to involve your favourite things in the most special day of your life.
Kim Taylor, of Wedding Design by Kim (www. weddingdesignbykim. co.uk), believes your wedding day should not be stressful or too serious. She said: “So many brides get so stressed when planning their wedding. Yes the ceremony is obviously a serious part of the day. But, after that, I believe in keeping your guests entertained and putting some fun into the day. I want to give a fabulous, stylish, chic wedding that everyone can enjoy. It’s a celebration, so enjoy it!”
In the spring, Kim helped put together a wedding based around the theme of a May Day country fair, with a maypole, bunting, tea cakes and table centrepieces featuring grass and butterflies. In the summertime, brides and grooms can consider hiring an ice cream van to keep guests cool, as well as outdoor games such as croquet, giant Jenga and dominoes and even funfair rides. Add an extra touch of fun by getting Polaroid photos taken throughout the day which can be displayed at the

If you see something you like in a magazine, we are able to make it for you. “From the bridesmaids and flower girls to best men and page boys, we can then go on to colour co-ordinate

One couple were both big golf fans and had their wedding at a golf club so they had their photos out on the course and made a theme out of it. “I do a lot of research and I have a fabulous network of suppliers who I bounce ideas off of constantly.”

Get Me To The Church On Time Your wedding day should be all about style. From start to finish, you will want to wow and impress with your choices and decisions. What better way to catch everyone’s attention than to arrive at your wedding in a slick Mercedes, a traditional Rolls Royce – or a big red bus! Whether you want people to stop and marvel in the streets or you want to turn up looking a million dollars, there is the car, bus – or animal – to help you achieve the dream

t Aristocars (www.aristocars.co.uk), it’s all about tradition. With a fleet of vintage and classic Rolls-Royces, from the 1920s to the 1980s, Tim Fleming believes they can cater to all tastes and budget. He said: “We own four of the Rolls Royce Phantom limousines built in the 1920s and 1930s, regarded at the time as the best cars in the world. Built for Royalty and the super rich, the Phantoms were the largest Rolls-Royces ever made, at a cost equivalent to about £300,000 nowadays. We now run vintage and classic Rolls-Royces as main cars and Daimlers as second cars. Only by viewing these cars can you truly appreciate the size and grandeur of the vehicles. They are big cars and cater perfectly for the big wedding dresses.” If your groom wants to show off to his mates, Concept Travel (www.concepttravel.co.uk) has just the thing-the free use of a sporty Lotus Elise when using one of their Mercedes S-Class, Bentley Continental or the seven-seater Mercedes Viano. Simon Baxter said: “All our cars are silver so you can use more than one and they will look great together and not clash with your wedding colour theme. It looks really good when you see our cars driving up to a wedding venue.”

Joy Foyle said: “Whether the bride is looking for the fairytale feel of Cinderella’s glass coach, the understated traditional elegance of a Landau or a simple country style wedding, we have the vehicle to suit. Our friendly and professional coachmen wear matching uniforms made for us to original Victorian designs.” Even for those having a one-venue wedding, there is call for hiring some transport. Tim Fleming, of Aristocars, said: “Some venues are right on the road, while others have a mile-long drive. Bride : Donna Bradley, 28 Groom : Craig Hallums, 28 Home : Rochford Venue : The Lawn, Hall Road, Rochford, Essex, SS4 1PJ Date : Friday September 4, 2009
The beginning… CHILDHOOD sweethearts Donna Bradley and Craig Hallums were just 12 when cupid first struck. Growing up together since nursery school, love blossomed for a time, before they settled on being life-long friends – or so they thought. Having both experienced long-term relationships as they got older, it wasn’t until they both found themselves single again six years ago that love re-emerged. Donna said: “We always stayed friends, even after leaving school. We went off and had boyfriends and girlfriends and were still friends. When we both split up with our partners, we started spending more time together and thought it was about time we got back together!” It was the morning of Donna’s birthday about four years ago when Craig surprised her with a marriage proposal. Donna said: “We were just at home and Craig brought me breakfast in bed and proposed! I never thought he’d manage to go and pick me an engagement ring, but he did!” The couple decided to spend two years planning their wedding – during which time their first baby, Jamie, was born. Donna said: “We had set our wedding date already and Jamie’s arrival did not delay that at all. It did mean I left a lot of the planning to the last minute as we were looking after a new baby, though!” In the run-up to the big day, Donna had a girlie night in with her friends, while Craig went to the local pub with his stags. Donna said: “What he got up to there that night, I don’t know! He won’t tell me!”
The big day… While Donna was dreaming of her fairytale marriage to Craig at the age of 12, she pictured floating down the staircase at The Lawn, Rochford. So, finding themselves living just minutes up the road, it was the only possible venue when the real wedding was being organised. Donna said: “The Lawn was my little dream as a child. I went to a wedding there when I was young and because of the staircase, I always imagined coming down the stairs in my wedding dress. We did look at five other venues, just to be sure it was the right one, but deep down I knew it had to be The Lawn.” Finding her dress, however, was a far more difficult task. Donna said: “I took ages to find my dress. I thought I knew exactly what I wanted. I also knew I didn’t want frills and lace and flowers on it – exactly what I ended up with! The women in Confetti and Lace kept bringing this same dress out for me and I kept saying that I didn’t want to try it on as it was everything I didn’t want. But everything I chose to try on wasn’t right. So, in the end, I gave in and tried on the dress. As soon as I put it on, I almost cried. All I did after that was dream about the dress so I went back a week later and bought it. I tried others on in the meantime, but compared them all to it.” The off-white Maggie Sottero dress had a corset with lace down the back and sequins. It was fitted to the hip and then wider towards the bottom with a long train. To compliment the “busy” bridal dress, Donna chose more simple pink dresses for her bridesmaids – best friend Lindsey MacDonell and cousin Bethany Bransden. Craig’s cousin Poppy Grant wore a mini version of Donna’s dress as flower girl while the couple’s son, Jamie, wore a BHS suit with pink cravat and waistcoat
as page boy to match Craig’s best man, Danny Wise. As Donna is not a fan of flowers, she carried a simple bouquet of pink roses while her bridesmaids had an arrangement of just three roses tied together. Fifty guests watched as Donna fulfilled her lifetime dream of walking down the stairs at The Lawn ahead of saying her vows. She walked towards her husband-to be to Take That’s Greatest Day. Their wedding breakfast was started with leek and potato soup, followed by a roast pork dinner and finished with a fancy jam roly poly. As a big fan of shoes, Donna had made all their female guests table favours which were glass slippers containing sugared almonds and tied up with a pink bow. Craig made their male guests boxes containing the traditional almonds. Another 150 guests joined the party in the evening when the new Mr and Mrs Hallums had their first dance to another Take That track.

Lasting memories… The newly-weds spent their wedding night in the Westcliff Hotel bridal suite before heading off to Yarmouth for a four-day break. Their main honeymoon will be a trip to visit Craig’s family in Australia when Jamie is old enough to take the long trip. Donna said of their day: “My fondest memory of the day was sitting at our top table for the wedding breakfast, just the two of us. We had Jamie with us, but he fell asleep, so we literally had about an hour and a half to ourselves to kiss, hold hands and talk about the day so far. It was lovely and private. “One memory which makes me smile is the sight of Craig almost passing out as I walked down the stairs to our ceremony. His best man was trying to bring him around! When we were saying our vows, I was holding his arm and holding him up. He kept puffing. I also said his name around the wrong way when I was saying my vows. Everybody cracked up laughing, but I didn’t know what I’d said wrong. I had to say my line again around the right way!” Donna’s one piece of advice to future brides is to bear in mind the weight of your dress when you try it on. She said: “The women in the shop told me I had picked the heaviest dress that season, but I didn’t really take into account what they were saying. We ended up leaving our reception at 10.30pm and getting a taxi rather than waiting for our bridal car at midnight as I was feeling quite ill having carried the two stone of dress around all day. Especially if you have children or large grounds to walk around, do not have a heavy wedding dress!”

master your ceremony
Let the
Y
ou have spent months if not years planning your wedding day down to every last little detail. You know where you want everyone to stand during the ceremony, where they will sit at the wedding breakfast and what time you want your cake to be cut. So when the day arrives, you have two choices. You can spend the most magical day of your life stressed when people aren’t following the plan in your mind. Or, you can hire the services of a toastmaster who can ensure your dream day unravels without you bursting into tears of panic and frustration.
Relax
Harry Matthews is open dates officer for Essex & London Toastmasters Ltd. He can be on hand throughout your day to keep things running to time and support the wedding party and guests wherever needed. He said: “I see it as my role to make sure the bride and groom, the host and hostess relax and enjoy the day. When a couple confirm their booking with me, I take the time to find out what they want my role to involve. A toastmaster should make sure the event runs exactly how they want it to. If they want the day to be formal, then we can be formal. But, to me, a wedding is a family party. There are three lots of people - the bride’s family, the groom’s family and the friends – and we have got to gel that lot into one group and create an atmosphere which means they enjoys themselves.” On the day, Harry ensures his timetable and the banqueting manager’s plans match to ensure the wedding breakfast is not served while the photographs are still being taken. He greets the guests and starts the process of breaking the ice between those who do not know each other. He says there is nothing “sergeant major” about what he does, Also check out
but that he is able to ensure the event runs smoothly while keeping the atmosphere alive at the same time. He said: “Every toastmaster has their own way of doing things.”
A modern approach Master of ceremonies Steve Gregory (www.classictoastmaster.moonfruit. com) is trained and accredited by the English Toastmasters Association. Following a career in the public services where he was responsible for the organisation of conferences and high profile events, Steve transferred his skills to the wedding industry. He said: “This was a natural progression for me. I am used to speaking to the public and I really enjoy meeting the brides and grooms and their families.” Steve’s catchline is A Modern Approach With Traditional Values. He sees his role as being on hand to avert any potential problems, smoothing the way for a perfect day. He said: “Part of the job is to take the pressure off the bride and groom and best man to allow them to enjoy themselves. I give them advice to remember on their day; such as the groom looking at his bride as she walks down the aisle as he’ll never get that moment again otherwise. I also work closely with the photographer to get the right guests in the right place at the right time so the right photos can be arranged quickly and professionally. I am the liaison officer, working between the bride, groom and families, the venue, the entertainment and the caterers. It is a juggling act. That is why the best toastmasters have great people skills.” Steve meets with his brides and grooms up to eight weeks before their big day to put together a planning sheet which he carries with him on the day. He finds out if there are any guests with disabilities or
Roger Galton-Davis,
anyone they want him to make a particular fuss of. To cater for every eventuality, Steve carries an emergency pack of superglue for shoe heels which fall off, umbrellas for unexpected downpours, tissues for the tears, shaving and manicure set for disorganised grooms and a stapler for dropped trouser hems. He said: “It is about the modern approach and using my experience to make sure things go right.”
Event management
Ted Prior (www.toastmaster-tedprior. com) retired from the international moving business to fulfil his lifelong ambition of being a toastmaster. Now a professional toastmaster and master of ceremonies, he said: “The whole point of a toastmaster is to steer the day. You are the event manager on the day and take the stress and worry about what should be happening and when away from the bride and groom.” Using his extensive experience of weddings, Ted can offer help and advice surrounding wedding etiquette and protocol, timing, the receiving line and who should be in it, who should make speeches and in which order and seating arrangements. Ted offers his clients the option of having proceedings run formally or informally on the day. He said: “The majority of people go for the informal option. They want the day to run smoothly, but without the pomp and ceremony. I will provide a dignified authority discharged with an appropriate sense of humour enabling the bride and groom, as well as parents, to relax and enjoy themselves in the knowledge the arrangements are being well managed. The important thing is to listen to what the bride and groom want and help them to create the day they will remember for the rest of their lives for the right reasons. I enjoy helping people with their very special day.”

Before booking a videographer, Jean says it is vital to see examples of the company’s work. 4 Seasons Videos sends out a demo showing footage from more than ten weddings they have covered, in various settings such as churches and civil ceremonies. They also visit the couple a month before the day to talk through exactly what sort of coverage they want. Jean said: “People spend all this money on their wedding day and then are not able to remember the little details, so to not have a videographer to capture it is crazy. The bride and groom go off on honeymoon and have nothing when they come back. It is lovely to be able to come home and sit down and relive the ceremony and see the reactions of your friends and family.”
The Day
C A P T U R E
RELIVE every special moment of your wedding day time and again by having it captured on DVD. With so much going on on your big day, it is impossible to take everything in. The looks on your friends and families’ faces as you walk down the aisle, the nervous pacing of the groom as he awaits his bride and the emotional morning the bride spends with her parents and bridal party should never be forgotten. But, the only way for both bride and groom to enjoy those memories over and again is to watch it all back on television. And with today’s technology, having a videographer at your wedding need not be an obtrusive experience, according to 4 Seasons Videos (www.4seasonsvideos.co.uk). Jean and Graham Lightfoot capture every part of your day on their high definition (HD) cameras. Jean said: “The reason we find people choose not to have a videographer at their wedding is they believe they are going to get in the way or be too intrusive. We have got HD, wide screen cameras with zoom lenses. We do not need to be in the middle of things or in peoples’ faces. We keep as far out the way as possible, but still capture everything that is going on. With both Graham and myself filming on the day, you get footage from two angles and our professional editing which switches from camera to camera gives great results.” Maria Read, of Videohouse Productions, agrees. She said: “It is really important we are not obtrusive on the day. We do not direct. We can do it all without being in everyone’s way and without everyone knowing you are there. We just mingle in with the guests and get shots which are naturally happening.”
Maria Read, of Videohouse Productions (www.videohouse.org), believes people have a preconceived idea of wedding films. She said: “Things have come a long way. They are not wedding day videos anymore, they are wedding day films which capture the day from beginning to end. They are like fly-on-the-wall documentaries. We tailor them to suit our clients and can be there as long as they want, we can add whatever music they want over the top and we are able to interview the bride and groom and add their comments over the top, too. People expect so much more now with HD and Blu Ray technology. “Every wedding has the same elements, but it is the people who make the wedding and if you can catch that atmosphere, it really does help the bride and groom to remember the day. The bride and groom do not see who is interacting with each other and it is nice for them to see that in moving images.”

roomed to Perfection Grooms wanting to look their very best in a luxury made-to-measure suit need to consider more than just colour, as Jack Bunney explains. It can be quite a daunting prospect for the uninitiated to have a suit made. At first glance, your options are so limitless it can feel almost impossible to come to a reasonable decision without endless hours of deliberation. However, like most major decisions, the process can be simplified by relying on the expertise of professionals. A good tailor will have a lengthy consultation with you to decipher your exact needs and then he will attempt to steer your decision-making process in the correct direction. A large part of tailoring skill is the ability to judge a client’s requirement and then interpret those requirements into an actual garment. There is a large variation in price between different vendors and different services. These variations are due to the level of skill involved in producing the garment. The major difference is the type of construction used. A made-to-measure suit will be made like a ready-to-wear. It will look like a ready-to-wear and will feel like a ready-to-wear. However, the suit is made just for you, it is cut out and constructed to your requirements. It is a lot like buying a ready-to-wear suit, but with the alterations already cut into the suit before it is made. You can also customise your suit before it is made, you can decide on style design and fit. You can also choose linings, monogramming, under collar colours or any other personal touches you would like to add. A bespoke suit is made using traditional methods. They are hand-cut and handmade. The overall finish of the garment is much heavier than a made-to-measure and the finer more luxurious fabrics never make up quite as flat and clean as a ready-to-wear. The look of the suit is more handcrafted, with handmade buttonholes and hand-padded collars. The real advantage of a bespoke garment is the fit; a bespoke suit will look perfect when worn by the owner. The number of fittings over a period of weeks will allow an almost perfect approximation of the person’s figure.
Made-to-Measure Pros:
• Price: The price is about half of a bespoke suit, which allows you to choose a more expensive luxurious fabric if you wish. • Weight: The very best made-to-measure factories can produce very fine, extremely luxurious fabrics which use a light weight construction, considerably lighter weight than bespoke. • Sizing and fit: The fit and size is determined before the suit is cut, allowing the suit to fit your exact shape. • Customisation: Fabric, linings, style, design and monogramming. These are all your decisions; you can design your suit just how you would like it.
Made-to-Measure Cons:
• Price: Made-to-measure is more expensive than a ready-to-wear suit. • Weight: Lightweight, fine construction is unlike the sturdier bespoke construction. • Sizing and fit: Unlike bespoke, these suits do not have numerous fittings. Normally one or two fittings are required. This allows an excellent fit, but not perfect. • Customisation: Yes, you can customise your suit, but you are limited to the options the factory can produce. Unlike bespoke.
Bespoke Pros:
• Price: Although a pricey product, the value for money is self evident as these suits can last a lifetime. • Weight: With substantial hand work and traditional methods being used, these suits feel sturdy and weighty. • Sizing and fit: A suit which has been cut for you and then has numerous fittings at each stage of construction will fit perfectly. • Customisation: If you can imagine it, a good tailor can make it.
Bespoke Cons:
• Price: A bespoke suit can have a prohibitively high price. • Weight: Bespoke suits use traditional methods of make and this makes the overall weight much more than a made-to-measure. • Sizing and fit: A bespoke suit will fit perfectly. It will fit how the tailor decides the suit should fit as appose to the client. • Customisation: The limitless choice can be mind boggling; be sure to have a firm idea of what you do and do not want before entering into a bespoke suit.
Style When you are having your suit made, you should at least have a vague idea of the type of style you would like. Form some ideas for yourself, even if you can only decide on the details you definitely do not like, this is all valuable research before having your unique suit made. Morning Suit (Tail Suit): A tail suit is the most traditional of wedding suits and is also fantastically flattering to most figure shapes. However, a tail suit would very rarely be used again after the wedding. 3/4 Length Style (Edward): This style is not very flattering if you do not have the longest leg. It is also unlikely to be worn again after the wedding. It is an excellent contemporary twist on a traditional morning suit. Evening Suit: A dinner suit (evening suit) is characterised by its satin covered lapels and satin gallon which runs down the
leg of the trousers. An evening suit can be used again after the wedding for the correct formal functions. This style can only be used for a black tie themed wedding. Lounge Suit: A lounge suit is a regular suit and can be worn both for weddings and other occasions after. A lounge suit can always be dressed up for the wedding itself with a wedding style waistcoat and cravat (or tie). Single Breasted One Button: A single breasted suit is a suit which does not overlap (unlike a double breasted). They can come with various lapel shapes and quantity of buttons. It is quite fashionable at the moment to choose a one button single breasted in a slimline cut; you can choose the popular high peak lapels or the standard step style lapel. Single Breasted Two Button: This style is the most common. It can be used for almost any type of occasion and can look slimming if used in conjunction with side vents and slanted pockets. This style will not date and will always be a traditional favourite. Single Breasted Three Button: Sometimes this style is called the English Cut as it is a Saville Row favourite. It has seen a dip in popularity recently and does not suit all shapes and figures. But used with the right fabric (classic worsteds or tweeds), this suit will give a traditionally English look. Double Breasted: A double breasted suit is the style of suit where the buttons overlap each other and you fasten the jacket both from the inside and the outside. This style of jacket has to be worn with the buttons done up at all times and is not suitable for a waistcoat.
Fabric One of the most important choices you will make while designing your suit will be your choice of fabric. The fabric will determine the overall look of your suit as an outfit, the fabric will determine how formal or informal your suit will look, the fabric will determine how comfortable you feel in your suit and will determine how much you pay for your suit. Mohair: Mohair comes from the Angora goat and South Africa is the number one producer. It is one of man's oldest fibres and was first used 3,400 years ago. The best quality comes from a region of the world that anthropologists call the cradle of the human race: the Camdeboo region. It is a desolate area in South Africa where the Bushmen live in harmony with untamed nature. It gives smooth, shiny and hardwearing fabrics. Fineness is from 24 to 26 micron (Âľ) for the young mohair (Kid mohair) and 36Âľ for the adult mohair. Fine mohair is blended with wool. Cashmere: Cashmere is made from the very fine undercoat of the cashmere goats in Central Asia; cashmere fibre is carefully combed out, not shorn.
The finest goats are to be found in Mongolia. Of all natural animal fibres currently available, cashmere is one of the finest and softest. Its limited supply and luxurious texture make it an extremely exclusiveand sought-after material which provides its wearer with soft, warm and light garments. Wool: The wool fibre is found in the fleece of the sheep. The fine wools come from the Merino sheep. Australia is the number one producer. It is light, voluminous and able to absorb humidity and an insulator. The length, diameter, amount of crimp and strength between fibres vary. It is these properties that determine the value of wool. The unit of measure for fineness is micron (Âľ). Wool is the most common of suit fabrics and the choice in wools alone can be quite startling. Wool is a fibrous protein derived from the specialized skin cells called follicles. Wool is taken from animals in the Caprinae family, principally sheep, but the hair of certain species of other mammals including: goats, llamas, and rabbits may also be called wool. Wool has several qualities that distinguish it from hair or fur: it is crimped, it has a different texture or handle, it is elastic, and it grows in staples (clusters). Other Wool Fabrics: Tweed is rough textured wool, originally homespun and slightly felted. This fabric is sturdy with a mottled colour. Virgin Wool is wool that has never been processed into fabric. Sharkskin is woven with warp and filling yarns of alternating white with black, brown or blue. Merino wool is soft and luxurious, resembling cashmere.
This term is also used to describe the finest wools. Melton, a heavy, tick, short napped fabric without a finish press or gloss. Hounds tooth check has a four pointed star check in broken twill weave. Herringbone wool is woven in twill that is reversed at regular spacing, creating a saw tooth line. Harris Tweed is a hand woven fabric from Scotland with a soft feel. Gabardine is tightly woven wool twill with a high sheen. This fabric is excellent for tailoring and wears well.
Fit The primary reason for having a suit made (rather than buying ready-to-wear) is the fit of a suit which has been made for you. A good fitting suit will feel comfortable; will look effortlessly formal and well dressed. A good fitting suit will not only maximise masculinity, but also hide an imperfections. The fit of the suit is determined at the very first stage of the process (the cutting). Therefore, if you have any personal request regarding fit you should make your feelings known at the very first consultation. A good tailor should ask all of the relevant questions regarding fit while consulting with you,
but even the best tailors are not mind-readers and may need your input to determine exactly what fit you require. It is always worth giving the matter of fit some thought prior to your initial fitting. Try on any clothing you have which you are happy (or unhappy) with and try to determine why you are happy (or unhappy) with this item and consider how this could be improved. It is always worth remembering your correct shoe and the correct style of shirt when attending all fittings.
Design Having your own unique suit made allows you to consider personal design options which would otherwise be unavailable to you. These unique touches can include the following: Personal choice of linings Sleeve linings, Button choice Real working cuff buttons Coloured buttons holes or lapel holes Monogramming, Embroidery Contrast top collar, Contrast under collar Pocket configuration. And just about any other option you can think can be integrated into your personal design, making your suit a 100% unique bespoke garment.

Resort summary
Fiji is an exotic melting pot of cultures and traditions and home to pristine beaches and lush, tropical hinterland. Made up of 33 Islands some inhabited, most not. Fuji offers miles and miles of extreme pristine beauty and provides the inquisitive visitor with a genuine and truly memorable experience. If you are looking for a combination of an amazing cultural experience, great hospitality and superb weather, Fiji offers all three in abundance. The islands of Fiji enjoy a typical tropical climate throughout the year with high temperatures and humidity the norm. Fiji has, on average, around six to eight hours of sunshine a day with fairly consistent temperatures throughout the year. You would be very unlucky to experience more than a few hours of rain in a day even during the wet season, which runs from late December to mid March.
