First impressions don’t always count... I was only 18 when I met James. He was a friend of my brother Rob and was four years older than me. If I’m honest that first meeting, on a night out in Chelmsford, didn’t go too well. I found James, who worked as a plumber, really annoying! Still there must have been something about him because I found myself asking questions and becoming very interested in what he was doing – I must have driven my brother mad! James was obviously keen on me too, because it wasn’t too long, on another night out at a club in Essex, that we shared our first kiss. That was it for me, I was smitten! Because it was so expensive to buy a house where we lived, and I didn’t earn an awful lot from my job as a veterinary nurse, James and I, after we’d been dating for a while, decided to move in with my mum, Joan and save for our own place. Luckily James is very laid back and my mum worked nights a lot, so we did have some space, but in fact James and mum got along incredibly well. As the years went by I did wonder why James didn’t ask me to marry him. I guess I knew he would propose when the time was right, but he just didn’t seem that bothered about making it official.

A wonderful shock By the time of my birthday – October 5th – in 2006, James and I had found a house which we were to move into the following year and had even bought a dog, Jessie, but there was still no proposal. I really thought he would have popped the question on my birthday because he was acting so strangely, sneaking around and seeming nervous. About a week later we’d taken Jessie for a walk and to my utter shock, when we got back, James just popped his head round the door and said ‘By the way, will you marry me?’ He was holding out a box with a simple diamond on a gold band – it was beautiful. As I looked at him a huge grin spread across my face. ‘’I’ve waited too long for this’’ I replied. ‘’Get down on one knee and do it properly!’’ I was joking of course but he did, and then he went on to explain how he had meant to give me the ring for my birthday but just didn’t know how to go about it. The nerves had taken over and he’d bottled it! All the sneaking around had been him taking a ring from my jewellery box without me knowing so he could get the right size engagement ring.

and dizzy I put it down to stress. I also put my tiny bit of weight gain down to takeaways as we tried to get the kitchen in order. It wasn’t until I grumbled to my friend about having to buy bigger bras that she mentioned I could be expecting. It may sound strange but it hadn’t even crossed my mind! However, a home pregnancy test later confirmed that yes, I was going to be a mum! Even stranger was my first scan which indicated that I was actually 25 weeks gone! To say James and I were speechless is an understatement, but though it was unexpected, we were thrilled.

A pregnant pause Before we could make any plans for our big day there was our house to move into. Like any house move it was an upheaval and so when I started feeling a little ill

Our little boy Luke was born on February 17th 2008 and we were overjoyed.

A winter bride When Luke was six months old and the shock of his arrival had died down, James and I decided to press on with our wedding plans. Though I’d always imagined being a summer bride, because of the new house and baby our budget was quite tight, therefore I figured that if I chose a Christmas wedding I could utilise the venue’s decorations. Of course when we visited the Reid Rooms I fell in love with it and the old barn with its beams would, I knew, lend themselves to a really magical winter ceremony. Luckily for us the date of December 18th 2009 was free and we booked it on the spot. Neither James nor I are particularly religious so we opted for a civil ceremony with 61 guests and invited another 20 along for the evening reception.

Dressing to impress The next step was finding my dress. What is it with me and first impressions, because when I saw the dress from Martina Liana at the Wedding Shop in Colchester, I thought ‘Ugh, no way!’ In a pale toffee colour with ruching to one side, a fitted bodice covered in pearl drops and detailing at the back, I didn’t even want to try it on, but when I did – bingo! My sister in law Tracey gave me a fur wrap to go with the dress – my something borrowed – and the overall look was stunning. For my bridesmaids, nieces Grace, now six and Kitty, three, I chose dresses and fluffy shawls from Monsoon in ivory and had the Wedding Shop customise them with a green sash and beads. James and his best men, brothers Nicky, Eddie and Dave, chose black suits with green cravats from Anthony in Billericay, while

pageboys Luke and my nephew Harrison had suits from Next. For my flowers I chose dark red roses with berries and green foliage sprinkled with diamonds and pearls by Jill Lovett.

The big day arrives A few weeks before the wedding I’d had a hen night in London, going to the theatre and for a meal and drinks, while James had gone fishing and out in Chelmsford. We’d been lucky with the weather then, but on December 17th – the day before our wedding - the snow came down! It didn’t cross my mind that we may have to cancel, but it did mean that James and I were stuck that evening. I couldn’t get to the venue to get ready and James couldn’t get to his mums until taxis were running again the next morning. Luckily the ceremony wasn’t until 2pm and I had time to have my hair done by my friend Wendy and my make-up by my sister in law Tracey. It was really lovely, with everyone coming and going and the bridesmaids and pages running around. Even my Nan, Elizabeth was there from Scotland so it was a lovely, happy family atmosphere.

Christmas magic I didn’t get nervous about the ceremony until it was time to walk to the ceremony room. With snow all around and my dad Philip on my arm we walked from my room and outside towards the doors with everyone turning to look at us and grinning – it was amazing! To the strains of the Foo Fighters ‘Miracle’ I reached James who looked at me and smiled. It felt so intimate and emotional and I almost blubbed! After the ceremony it was back to the beautiful Barn with Christmas trees and candles, and table decorations of wreaths of holly for our wedding breakfast of salmon, beef, apple pie and chocolate fondant followed by a disco until midnight. Though the snow had prevented a few people getting to the reception we still had a wonderful time and a brilliant night in the bridal suite at the Reid Rooms – I really couldn’t have asked for more. The next day, as a surprise James and I were whisked off to a stunning hotel in Sussex – complete with a hot tub – paid for by the family – and then it was back home with all the magic of Christmas still to come. With Christmas upon us once again I can’t help thinking back to that wonderful day – I just wish I could do it all over again!

Make-up ‘2011 sees the emergence of clear, almost natural looking make-up with fresh, dewy complexions being seen at all the major fashion shows. To perfect the ‘no make-up’ look requires virtually as much effort as a stronger look and with little else to draw the eye, it’s vital that each part of your make up is flawless.’

Eyes ‘The overall trend for eyes for 2011 is pale neutrals and natural-looking taupes and peach shadows which featured at the Chloe, Versace and Gucci Spring/Summer 2011 fashion shows. There was also the use of soft, iridescent colours as seen at Christian Dior, who displayed eyelids covered in soft pastel candy pinks, blues and oranges.’

Eyebrows ‘Eyebrows will be worked to a natural groomed and balanced shape.’

giving you a trendy and fabulous appearance. With subtle cheeks defined with a touch of blush, mascara on your eyelashes, and bare lips or natural looking lipstick, it’s a look that will suit everyone.

Contact Tel: 07967-226639 E-mail: info@beautiful-you.biz www.beautiful-you.biz Kirsty from Bespoke Makeovers is Brides Etc’s resident make-up expert… ‘The one thing coming through in 2011 is the beauty of naturallooking skin and a flawless polish. Very soft eyes with a hint of shadow and mascara is bang on trend, or you could take it up just a notch with eyeliner and a few corner lashes, finishing with a flush of colour on the cheeks and lips, leaving you with a very fresh, clean look. If the natural look isn’t for you, then buck the trend and go for brighter stronger colours on the eyes and lips and enhance your cheek bones with either a matte blusher or highlight your cheeks with a pretty shimmer.’

Lips ‘The main trend for lips will be neutral and natural. However, this is a hard look to carry off, so thankfully there were also strong reds and oranges seen at the YSL, Gucci and Givency shows. These gave a lift to an otherwise natural face.’

James’ tip ‘If strong lip colour seems daunting, try using a colour with a warm undertone which will be more sympathetic to your complexion and less obvious than one with a cool undertone. Ask at your make-up counter if you are not sure which lipsticks are cool or warm.’

Hair ‘The main trend for hair in the coming year is either loose and rough dried as seen at the Burberry and D&G shows, or scraped back into twists and buns as seen virtually everywhere else! From simple coiled buns at Stella McCartney to neat low ponytails twisted upwards at Gucci or a middle parting with the hair scraped into two buns at Prada. Sam Easter is a professional make-up artist from Beautiful You in Dunmow, Essex… In my opinion 2011 will be introduce us to lots of nude and natural make-up, with the emphasis on timeless, smoky eyes or bold and flirty ones - the choice is entirely yours. While the eyes will be a talking point, lips, nevertheless, will remain a significant element of make-up trends.

Go natural! Make-up artists just cannot get enough of this simple, elegant yet natural look. 2011 will yet again see women doing natural make-up, and why not. Natural make-up is the best way to enhance your natural beauty, without putting in much effort, yet

Which brand to use, how to apply it, which shades will suit you? Whatever your make-up worries, Kirsty from Bespoke Makeovers has the answer! image courtesy of www.townandcountryphotographic.co.uk

Q Hi Kirsty, could you recommend a good brand of make-up for contact lens wearers? Just recently I have been getting very sore eyes with my usual brand. A Firstly, have you gone back to your optician and had your eyes checked as there could be a number of reasons for your discomfort. If all is ok, try putting your lenses in after application and use matte and not shimmer shadows to minimise any chance of product going into your eyes. Look for products that are hypo-allergenic or which state they are safe for use by contact lens wearers. When using loose powder make sure you close your eyes and sweep the brush across gently, or try a pressed powder on a sponge. When adding blusher, again close the eye to the side you are working on. With mascara, go for a waterproof one and apply this with one eye closed, or think about having your lashes tinted. Contact To book Kirsty please call: 07702 939055. Or send your questions to her at kirsty@bespokemakeovers.co.uk

Editor’s choice THE JANE PACKER FRAGRANCE COLLECTION

Q I get very red cheeks in the cold and as I’m having a winter wedding I don’t want to look like Noddy! What can I do?

A You need to use a good primer or make-up base on top of your usual moisturiser, followed by a fine layer of foundation. Next, mix your foundation and concealer together - not too wet or too dry as this slightly thicker textured product needs to move easily on the back of your hand. Apply across your cheeks and nose with a light dabbing and moving action (remember this mixture will go a long way so take your time, as less is more). When you have covered the desired area, add just a little around your eyes. You need to have a good, even balance across your face. Now, add a small amount of loose translucent powder using a large, clean blusher brush, with a soft sweeping action from head to chin. Finally, add a little blusher across the apples of your cheeks. Dior have a lovely, soft pink shade called ‘roes dragee, a touch of blush’ which will give you a fabulous glow, or try a more peachy colour for a fresh lift.

If anyone can create a fragrance to make us sit up and take notice, it’s Jane Packer. Better known as an International floral designer, Jane has worked with flowers for over 20 years and has dreamed of making her own fragrance since she was a child collecting petals from her garden. Jane’s dream has now come true, with a wonderful collection of perfumes, each of which represents a different mood. Choose from Red roses, black violet and cyclamen; Gardenia, cedar wood and patchouli; Iris, jasmine and sandalwood; Green orchid, vetiver and lemon grass or Fig, sandalwood and amber. In eye-catching bottles with tulip shaped caps, these scents cost £45 but are well worth a splurge and ideal to match to the fragrance of your wedding bouquet. The Jane Packer Collection is available at Jane’s flagship store on New Cavendish Street, London (www.janepacker.com) or at leading high street department stores.

Q I’m thinking of having permanent make-up on my eyes and lips. Would you recommend this? A Semi-permanent and permanent make-up can help enhance both eyes and lips for many women, but I would advise you start with semi-permanent if you’ve never had this done before. Remember that permanent make-up is like a form of tattooing, so please find yourself a reputable company and spend time with the consultant making sure she covers all the treatment options. Find out how long the desired look will last and how best to get the effect you are looking for. I would also suggest you ask what to expect after any treatment and if there any risks involved. |

Whatever your wedding day hair worries, our resident expert Sara Marshall from Occasions Hairdressing has the answer… Q I’m having a winter wedding and am going to wear a cape with a hood. What’s the best hairstyle to go for so my hair isn’t a mess when I take the hood off? My hair is shoulder-length and wavy A I would keep it flat on the top, either in a low soft chignon or in loose curls pinned over to one side coming forward over your shoulder. This way the hood will not mess your hair when you take it down. Keep it simple. Q Hi Sara, I want a change of image for my wedding. My hair is blonde but I love Cheryl Cole’s red hair - how would I get the look and what shade should I go for? I have pale skin and green eyes. A Firstly, I do not suggest that you try colouring your hair yourself as it’s not a straight-forward job and you want it to look as even as possible for the wedding. As you are blonde, your hair would have to be filled with a semi-permanent colour first (copper brown) to fill the blonde before applying the mahogany colour. As for shades of red, you could follow my tips:

Darker skin

If you have olive skin like Cheryl, then you can probably pull off her mahogany hue. Darker, berry shades look best with darker complexions.

LOCAL STYLIST TINA LAUNCHES ‘BEAUTIFUL HAIR’ Hairstylist Tina Crossley has launched ‘Beautiful Hair’, a new business specialising in creating wedding and special occasion hair. A member of the National Freelance Hair and Beauty Federation (NFHBF), ‘Beautiful Hair’ successfully blends Tina’s creative talent with a wealth of experience gained from working with brides on their wedding day. Tel: 01279 814037/07840-995848. E-mail: tina@beautifulhair4weddings.co.uk www.beautifulhair4weddings.co.uk

Paler skin

If your skin is very pale you can try a brighter red, or go for a more copper tone which will suit a peaches and cream complexion. Do remember though that any red colour fades quickly from the hair, so you must keep up the maintenance and most importantly, the condition.

Q My dream winter hairstyle would be full of twinkling stars! I’m planning on wearing my hair up; can you suggest a way of getting the look? Would I have to use hundreds of slides and pins? A The best look will, of course, depend on the style of your dress. If you’re going for a full, soft skirt you may want soft curls on top with diamante pins scattered through. For a tighter dress you could go for barrel curls or something a bit more intricate again with diamante pins or twirls. You don’t need too many you can create a better effect with less. Remember, odd numbers work better than even.

Q Hi Sara, what can I do to make my sleek, dark bob a little more exciting? My wedding dress is very plain and so I want the emphasis on my hair and face! A There are lots of things that could be done. You could simply place a beautiful diamante comb or pins in your hair, or by curling your hair and pinning it up at the sides you can give the impression that it is up. Put a lot of lift into the crown, possibly flicking out the ends. Or you could try finger waving the hair to give it a vintage feel. The possibilities are endless. Your wedding stylist should be able to come up with lots of styles for you, so give some a try. Have fun!

spirituality Q

I’m getting married in March and my stepfather is giving me away. My dad died ten years ago and I’m really panicking that he will see this as a slight to his memory. Should I tell my step-dad that I’ve decided to walk down the aisle on my own and how can I let Dad know that he is in my thoughts and I’m not trying to replace him? Sarah, Whitstable A Congratulations on your forthcoming marriage and please don’t let this dilemma spoil your exciting preparations. Your father in spirit continues to love you and is happy that you have someone there in the physical sense to oversee a duty he would have been proud to have carried out himself. In my experience, those close to us from spirit assist in our lives from beyond and as such I feel your father instigated your step-dad giving you away. In answer to your question concerning your thoughts about ‘replacing’ him, stop worrying and find comfort in the fact that he will be there on your special day, showing you tangible signs as to his eternal presence in your life.

Q My wedding is in four months time. I’m desperate to look my best for the day and wanted to lose a stone. Instead I’ve actually gained a stone which leaves me with two to lose! Have I left it too late?! Charlotte 28, Maidstone, Kent A Don’t panic Charlotte. A safe, controlled weight loss could be around two pounds per week, meaning you still have time to reach your goal. Always have three regular meals a day with two healthy snacks in between. Make sure every meal contains a balance of proteins, complex carbohydrates, fibre and good fats. This will make you feel fuller for longer and balance your blood sugar and energy levels. Try porridge oats with a seed mix and natural yoghurt or poached eggs on wholemeal toast for breakfast; grilled chicken or fish with brown rice or pasta with steamed veg, a prawn and avocado salad or a small baked potato with chili or beans for lunch and similar for dinner. However, do reduce your carbs (rice, pasta, potato) for this meal. You don’t need as many energy dense foods in the evening as you will be slowing down before bed. Snack on houmous and vegetable sticks; whole fruits such as apples and pears or a handful of mixed nuts. In addition, try a brisk 30-40 minute walk, swim or cycle each day to increase the body’s metabolism, burn extra calories and reduce stress levels. well being Editor’s choice: reflexology Life is full of stressful situations, whether it’s organising a wedding or being a working mum in desperate need of relaxation, as I was when I was invited to see Valesca Borlase, a reflexologist with practices in Henley, London and Pangbourne. What followed was the most amazing therapy session I’ve ever experienced. Valesca doesn’t claim to be a medium, yet through her intuition and empathy as well as her manipulation of my feet, she immediately knew what was bothering me, both physically and emotionally – long hidden secrets from way back in my childhood were revealed in an outpouring of emotion. A totally thrilling, deeply relaxing experience which comes highly recommended.

Beat the winter blues with a bespoke spray tan from celeb fave James Harknett Hi James, tell us a little about yourself ‘I’ve been in the tanning industry for over 10 years, launching key products from St Tropez and helping bring spray tanning to department stores across the country. I’ve worked closely with all the major tanning brands and launched my own bespoke spray tan service last year, specialising in home visits, photo shoots and wedding parties. I also have my own studio in London.’

Why choose a spray tan? ‘A honey glow can make all the difference to the way you feel, especially on your wedding day, as it will compliment your dress, teeth and eyes. Tanning products are of such a high standard now, that when applied by an expert like myself, no one need know you’re faking it! I recommend the tan is done 48 hours before a wedding, with a test spray two weeks before so I can ascertain the perfect application.’

What products do you use? ‘Xen; St Tropez; Sienna X; Fake Bake; Van and Lee Stafford’s Fake My Tan. With all the products I use, the guide colour should be worn for at least eight hours before showering off, so most people have the tan in the evening and shower off the next morning. I always give tips on how to keep the tan on the skin for longer such as applying an oil free moisturiser, but basically after a cool shower the tan will not rub off onto your wedding dress and there’s no horrible chemical smell either.’

What if a client is a little shy? ‘I provide disposable thongs for my ladies to wear, but you are welcome to wear as much or as little as you like. I’ve seen thousands of naked bodies and being a gay guy, all my ladies feel very comfortable with me.’

You’re often on TV - don’t you have a huge waiting list? ‘I’m GMTV’s/Daybreak’s tanning expert, have appeared with Lorraine Kelly to discuss tanning treatments and trends and even tan the X Factor contestants so yes, I am very busy and on call 24/7, but if I say I will do your wedding tan then I will be there!’

How long will the tan take? ‘Being mobile I come to your house. I have state of the art tanning equipment and a pop-up pod that’s put together in minutes. So I’m in and out in half an hour.’

Is it expensive? ‘My prices start at £30 for a full consultation and body spray. For central London and Kent the price is £40. However, for groups of three or more people, I offer a considerable discount.’

A fairytale wedding at a stately home built for a King Oxon Hoath Checklist

Civil licence: Yes Capacity for sit down meal: 65 Accommodation: Yes Tel: 01732 811071 Web: www.oxonhoath.co.uk

Oxon Hoath is a private stately home hidden in 73 acres of its own land, with a private lake, formal gardens, woods, pastures and rolling lawns. Set in the heart of the West Kent Rural Conservation Area, the ancient Manor of Oxon Hoath was originally built more than 600 years ago by Sir John Culpepper, a Knight of King Henry V, as a royal park for the Kingdom’s oxen and deer. Over the centuries the Oxon Hoath Estate has been the ancestral family home to 11 Knights of the Realm, many of whom enhanced both the house and the grounds in a fascinating variety of classic architectural styles. Oxon Hoath remains in family ownership today and is preserved as an enchanting and historic country estate of the most exquisite beauty.

Your special day at Oxon Hoath The Manor reserves a few weekends each year for private wedding receptions, they can offer you a weekday for a small

discount or you could even hire the estate for the whole weekend! Oxon Hoath has had its own gallery at the local church in West Peckham for 400 years for the Squire’s family. The owners can introduce you to the present day Reverend, Father McConaghie, if you wish. For your reception you will have the entire house and grounds to yourself and will be made to feel utterly at home. Huge doors interlink the rooms so your guests can wander freely from one to another. The main hall is 80 feet high and features a grand central staircase, a gallery and a wonderful Victorian glass Atrium. The huge pillars are painted bright red (a relic of a wild 1960s party by the previous owners thought worth preserving). Your main celebrations will be in the three grand reception rooms centred around the Jacobean library. All three rooms overlook the oldest untouched par terre terrace in England, down over pastures to the lake and the Weald of Kent beyond. Oxon Hoath’s wine and champagne is all organic but you can bring your own if you wish. Food-wise they cater for many budgets; from a simple finger buffet to a scrumptious, full-service wedding feast.

Stay in style There are 28 bedrooms at the Manor, so up to 50 family and friends can stay over. The bedrooms range from grand suites to quaint attic rooms with pretty painted floors. Most bedrooms are twin but there are also several singles, doubles and two family rooms sleeping three or four. Most rooms retain the original mansion proportions and have en-suite facilities. Those without have a bathroom close by. All rooms are centrally heated.

DJ

superstar

Gary Crowley was Capital Radio’s youngest ever DJ when he joined them at age 19. Over the years he has been a fixture on both TV and radio and continues to ‘appear’ on BBC Radio London… You fell into broadcasting by accident; it must have been great fun over the years? ‘Oh it has been. I’ve always DJ’d at clubs as well as on the radio but not many people can say they’ve toured with Wham! which was the nearest I’ll ever get to being in a Hard Day’s Night!’ You’ve DJ’d at some amazing celebrity weddings too... Well my best mate is a cabbie and another works in advertising, but because of the circles I’ve moved in I do know a lot of people in bands and have been really lucky to have DJ’d at some great weddings. From Andy Fletcher of Depeche Mode whose first dance with his wife was to Lionel Ritchie’s All Night Long, to Nick Heywood from haircut 100 and of course Bob Geldof and Paula Yates. Wow that must have been memorable! ‘I vividly remember Chrissie Hynde from The Pretenders kept coming up and saying “Gary, play this, play that”, so I said “Look come up here and join me” and we ended up dj-ing together. It’s funny because there were so many famous people and bands there that it took a while for people to loosen up and get on the dancefloor, but like ‘regular’ weddings they all seemed to love a bit of Motown.’ Did you think ‘I can’t play this or that track because the band are here’? ‘There was a bit of that. It was hard because just about every song in the charts at that time was made by a wedding guest – Bono from U2; Midge Ure from Ultravox. You name it, they were there.’ So you’ve carried on Dj-ing at weddings? ‘Yes, usually through friends of friends. I love weddings, it’s always a lovely atmosphere and you end up being hugged to death at the end of the night.’ Do you DJ for members of the public? ‘Yes of course. There’s a lovely story actually. A few years ago a listener e-mailed me via My Space. She and her husband had met through Guardian Soulmates dating website and one of the things they had in common was that they’d listened to my shows on Radio London and had grown up with me. This lady said “I know you probably won’t DJ for us” and of course I said I would. It was a great wedding and the couple stayed in touch, sending me e-mails and pictures. Then one day me and my daughter were walking down Bond Street and they were coming in the opposite direction. They they were about to have their first baby. So it was a really happy ending.’ Which areas would you cover if someone wanted to book you? ‘Well I’m London based but I would cover other areas.’ What about playlists? How do you decide what to play? ‘I chat to the couple on the phone to get an idea of what they want – a wish list if you like – plus the guests’ ages. I try to stick to the classics. I don’t play Agadoo or Hi Ho Silver Lining but I can put a great set together, stuff from 60s through to the present. Then I come along with my bag of CD’s – I don’t use a computer – and I make sure it’s a fantastic night.’

In your opinion, what’s the best way to find a good DJ? ‘Oh, word of mouth, definitely.’

All about Gary… Gary Crowley was born in 1961 and has been a figure on the London music scene throughout his career. When he was at school in the late 70s he started a punk fanzine called The Modern World, interviewing some of the most important bands of the day including the Sex Pistols, the Clash and the Jam. After leaving school he took up a junior position at Decca records in London. A short time later he became the telephone receptionist for the NME at their offices in Carnaby Street. Gary’s next employment was as a record plugger and through this job he was offered a post with Capital Radio. At 19 he was the UK’s youngest ever DJ. TV presenting soon followed alongside DJ-ing on BBC Radio London. In 1997 he became the star presenter on London’s first indie station XFM which also featured Ricky Gervais as ‘Head of Speech’. XFM’s launch date was 1st September 1997, with Gary the first DJ to broadcast on the station. The day before launch, Diana, Princess of Wales died and so it was that at Midday on 1st September 1997 Gary Crowley opened a new radio station with the words ‘Welcome to XFM, broadcasting on 104.9. We find ourselves starting a radio station today in circumstances we wouldn’t have wished, following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. As a mark of respect to someone we saw as someone going her own way… we wish to dedicate the activities of our launch day to her memory.’ Gary continued to present a mid-morning show until his old employers Capital Radio bought the station. He was offered an overnight ‘graveyard shift’ show and decided to quit and return to the BBC, on what is now BBC London 94.9 FM where he continues to broadcast two shows on Saturday evenings. In addition, Gary works as a TV reporter for BBC London.

Fawsley

festive

time

for you

Relax, celebrate and indulge in style this festive time, with a mini break to stunning Fawsley Hall… There are few better places to celebrate a traditional English Christmas and New Year than in the spectacular setting of a traditional and luxurious country hotel. Fawsley Hall in Northamptonshire is one such place. The warmest of welcomes awaits at Fawsley, whether you fancy a spa break with your mum, girlfriends or loved one, or a visit with friends and family. Whatever your dream of the ideal festive experience, Fawsley can make it happen. As soon as you enter the impressive gates of this stunning mansion, the spirit of Christmas takes you over. In the Tudor Great Hall you will be transported to a place where Christmases past and present come together. Throughout the festive period this historic room is transformed into a truly magical setting. The interior is illuminated with the warm glow of church candles while a log fire roars and crackles in the magnificent stone fireplace. At the room’s heart is our Christmas tree, one of the tallest in Northamptonshire, with its twinkling lights and beautiful festive decorations. But it’s not just Fawsley’s guests, partygoers and diners who get excited at this special time of year. The head chef and his team spend the preceeding months carefully planning the special seasonal menus and choice of wines which are always a highlight of any Fawsley Hall experience. From mince pies and mulled wine, through to mouth watering festive menus, the finest tastes of Christmas are never far away.

or you may just choose to play traditional board games by the fire. If you are feeling slightly more energetic, what about a walk in the beautiful surroundings of the hotel or trying your hand at field archery under the direction of the resident expert.

And so to bed… Fawsley Hall played host to Queen Elizabeth I in 1575. The Queen’s suite from this visit, with its soaring roof, delicately carved fireplace and sumptuous four-poster bed, exemplifies the luxury and charm of Fawsley Hall. The Tudor, Georgian and Victorian wings all have their own special character, which is reflected in the furnishings. Great care has been taken to retain period features, and each room has been individually styled to offer guests elegance and luxury. Throughout the house, the views of Fawsley Park and the countryside beyond are spectacular.

A place for all Whatever your age, Fawsley Hall is guaranteed to delight and surprise. From the enchanting magical tales told by a story teller, through to the classic feel-good Christmas films in the hotel cinema. For smaller guests there is a special ‘Family Time’ selection of treats, magic and games in quieter surroundings. Fawsley have also created an exciting range of activities for adults which include archery, spa treatments, guided walks and VIP passes for a trip to the designer shops in Bicester Village. In the true spirit of Christmas they also have Carols in the Great Hall and the opportunity to attend services or Midnight Mass at our local churches.

A chance to relax or discover If a relaxing time is the order of the day, you can enjoy the lovely Grayshott Studio Spa with its indoor swimming pool, hydropool, range of beauty treatments and deep relaxation area,

In the beginning... When people ask where Tim and I met and I reply ‘At the office Christmas party’ it sounds like such a cliché, but its true! It was six years ago and Tim was working as an IT Manager while I was a Marketing Consultant for the same firm. I liked him immediately, but because I was with someone already I didn’t really think of him in a romantic way. However, when I found myself single a little later I realised that I was thinking of Tim more and more, and when we eventually started dating I was thrilled. I think I knew even then, right from the start, that Tim was ‘The One’. He was so kind and considerate and I knew that he’d take care of me. Thankfully Tim felt the same way and our relationship moved very fast. Eight months after we started dating we moved in together and just a month after that I discovered I was pregnant! Tim and I were delighted to learn the happy news and when our son Tommy, now four, was born on June 24th 2006, there couldn’t have been happier parents.

And baby makes three Of course, bringing up a young baby meant that he came first and Tim and I didn’t really discuss getting married, although I knew we would both like that. It wasn’t until Tommy was three, on Valentine’s Day 2009 that Tim finally

proposed. I wasn’t expecting it at all. The night before Tim had said he was going to a party. Unbeknown to me, he’d actually gone to see my mum and dad Bob and Lynn to ask dad for my hand in marriage! On Valentine’s Day itself Tim gave me a card with the words ‘Will you marry me’ written in it. Inside was a plastic ring from Claire’s Accessories. I was so shocked and happy that I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry! Tim explained that he wanted us to choose the ring together and that’s why he thought up the idea of the plastic one! Later we went shopping, picking a beautiful princess cut diamond on a platinum band, before breaking the news to our friends and the rest of the family.

Weddings in South Woodham Ferrers where I was instantly smitten with an Ian Stewart dress in ivory. With its fitted bodice and full skirt I felt like a princess. For my bridesmaids – my three nieces Thea, 10; Evie, eight and Katie, four I chose pretty ivory dresses with pink sashes and pink flowers on the hem. My flowers came from Faithfully Flowers in Chelmsford – pink avalanche roses – and Tim plus his best man Tom Hawkins and the pageboys Tommy and Albert, both four, chose charcoal grey suits from Moss Bros with pale pink cravats.

A Summer bride Tim and I didn’t waste much time in deciding on the date for our wedding – August 17th that year. I have five sisters – Jane; Nicola; Vicky; Cheryl and Kate. Each had married in a different way but non had had an outdoor ceremony and that’s what I really craved. Newland Hall was the first and only venue that Tim and I visited and as soon as I saw their outdoor gazebo I fell in love with it – it was perfect! We booked the venue in March and then it was full steam ahead with choosing my dress. Just like the venue, I found the perfect thing straight away. With my mum and most of my sisters in tow I headed to Belissima

neice, Thea organised a mini hen night for me at my sister’s house where we had to dress as chickens, play party games and eat nibbles. It was all great fun! Tim had his stag weekend in Nottingham going white water rafting and clubbing with his mates.

A family affair The day before the wedding I stayed at my parent’s house while Tim stayed at home. The ceremony was at 2.30pm and that morning a lovely lady called Vicky from Gorgeous in Chelmsford came to do my make-up and my friend Angela Hatchard did my hair. The day was absolutely beautiful, with bright blue skies and warm sunshine. Dad had organised a Mercedes to pick us up and everyone was so happy. In fact I didn’t get nervous at all and it wasn’t until I began to walk down the aisle to Canon in D Major played by string duo Manor House Music that I became emotional. Seeing Tim waiting for me, we both welled up and when my sister Cheryl read a poem she had written for us and Tim’s sister Vicky did a reading I had to stop the flood gates opening! Luckily I composed myself long enough to say my vows and I was elated when Tim and I were pronounced man and wife and we exchanged rings – a platinum band for me and a titanium one for Tim. Then it was off to have some pictures taken by our wonderful photographer Neil Fortescue who made us feel so relaxed, before heading for the wedding breakfast of pate, tomato soup, sausage and mash and toffee cheesecake – Tim’s choice and a brilliant one! What was so lovely was having all the people we loved with us – friends family, my parents and sisters, Tim’s mum and dad Alan and Ann. It was perfect. My lovely nan Dora even made the cake – a tower of scrummy cup cakes.

A few suprises Wedding receptions can be a bit hit and miss and Tim and I were determined that ours would be memorable! We had a High School Musical half hour which the kids loved and then a basketball demonstration by Street Team who span balls on their fingers much to the delight of Tommy who is a huge basketball fan. Though the bride and groom are traditionally supposed to leave their wedding reception first, Tim and I stayed till the bitter end at midnight. We wanted to be with Tommy and so had decided to return home for the night, piling onto a coach along with all our guests. It may sound odd but it was wonderful. Everyone cheered us as we plonked ourselves down in our wedding finery. It was a lovely gesture and we really didn’t care about being at home. We were on such a high after such a perfect day. Even Tim, who is quite shy, was just overwhelmed by the love everyone showed to us and kept saying how amazed he was to have had such an amazing time.

A happy ending Tim and I never did get the honeymoon we spoke about taking later that year. Time moved on and in March 2010 I discovered I was pregnant again. We were both over the moon and it topped off a wonderful, wonderful year. Our baby is due in December so I will probably be a mum again by the time you read this. We’re all so excited – my husband to be a dad again and Tommy to be having a baby brother or sister. Though we always loved each other, being married has really made us the perfect family.

Moment

capture the

A wedding video is a treasured momento of your special day…

Pic: Tabs Videography

Why a video? A video is a living record of your wedding – an opportunity to hear as well as see the events of your special day. Precious moments like vows and speeches are recorded and can be heard time and time again. A video will also capture the laughter and tears, and is an emotive record of the day you and your loved one became husband and wife. Videographers often hear their Brides say that they are so glad they had a video, as that is what they treasure most, far more than static photographs.

Choosing a videographer

Words: courtesy of Andrew Kent of BBV

Do: • Ask to see an example of their work, and to see an actual wedding video - as this can be very different to any short sequences that may be cleverly edited together. Make sure they are the actual people who made the video and that they will be recording yours. • Ask whether they are members of the Institute of Videography (www.iov.co.uk), who have a code of practice they must follow, as well as an arbitration service you can use if there are any problems. • Be legal! Ask whether they have public liability insurance - ask to see their policy. Also whether they pay for the PPL license for any copyrighted music that is used in the video. Pic: Kim Hawkins

• Ask whether they shoot on professional or consumer cameras and in standard definition or high definition. High definition much better quality and they should be able to provide you with a Blu Ray Disc. • Ask whether they use radio microphones to pick up the vows. On camera microphones will struggle to record the vows and will lead to poor sound quality on the video.

Don’t: • Leave booking your videographer to the last minute. If you find the right company, book them as soon as possible, as they will be booked months, if not years, in advance and most can only cover one wedding a day. • Choose the cheapest videographer. They are usually cheap for a reason! Compare prices and make sure the overall production quality is one you are happy with. • Book a videographer without a contract. A contract will protect both you and them from any problems on the day. • Be afraid to ask lots of questions. Any decent videographer will be happy to answer your queries. • Forget to ask the church or venue whether they allow videoing before you book your videographer!

cool for

Nothing captures the essence of a winter wedding more than a touch of tartan… When Madonna wanted her dream winter wedding she chose a Scottish castle and we’re told the groom wore tartan. Of course, to the best of our knowledge, neither bride nor groom were of Scots descent, but both were at the cutting edge of cool and nothing screams class with an edge more than a well-fitted kilt. Coes menswear have over 80 year’s experience of dressing men and boys for special occasions, and a well deserved reputation as a leading supplier of formal wear, yet they acknowledge that Highland Wear is not only worn north of the border, it’s a popular option for wedding attire in England as well.

Highland wear hire for men and boys ‘Dashing and strikingly different’ is how Coes describe their range of Highland Wear. From jackets and Kilts in a wide range of tartans, Coes can provide high quality garments and a professional service for both men and pageboys. They can also show you an extensive range of accessories to finish off your Highland look. As well as stocking Highland attire at their Ipswich shop, orders can also be placed at Coe’s branches in Beccles, Dovercourt, Felixstowe, Lowestoft and Maldon. In Kings Lynn you can visit Goddards and in Newmarket Goldings.

A helping hand

Choosing a wedding outfit can be as tricky for a Groom as for a Bride, and that’s where Coes fully trained staff really come into their own. Coes are proud toemploy people whose only function is to deal with formalwear hire. Customers are given specialist service from focused assistants and can often try on their chosen outfits at the fitting stage to ensure they are correctly fitted in preparation for the big day. With over 30 suit options on offer and a broad selection of fancy waistcoats and accessories as well as their Highland wear and Shervani outfits to hire or buy, there is something for everyone at Coes. There is also a ‘Special Making Service’ for Brides and Grooms who want an item especially made in their own cloth.

Value for money Quality, Service and Choice are the cornerstones of Coes. Their aim has always been to pitch their prices at a mainstream level and to offer value for money without taking anything away from the very special service they offer. As their representative states: ‘We hope your readers will visit us and see for themselves what we have to offer. Our aim is to make the men’s visit an enjoyable experience, so everything is tailored to ensure this happens’

A long established tradition with a local touch Coes is one of the longest established menswear hire businesses in East Anglia, with branches in Ipswich, Dovercourt, Felixstowe, Beccles and Lowestoft, plus formalwear departments at Golding of Newmarket and Goddards of Kings Lynn. Their Maldon shop is conveniently located in the town centre and is open Monday to Saturday 9am to 5.30pm. As well as the usual wonderful array of formal wear the Maldon store also offers a broad selection of men’s fashion and footwear in a wide array of chest sizes and fittings.
