Bride: Sarah Gay, 27 Groom: Steve Kemp, 31 Home: Bristol Venue: Clearwell Castle Date: May 19th 2010

Sarah and Steve had been childhood sweethearts for more than a decade, and even after the birth of their first child, Sarah never imagined that Steve would take the plunge and ask her to marry him. But that all changed in November 2008 with a romantic proposal during a weekend break. Two years later the couple are finally husband and wife…

Instant attraction... When they met at the age of 15, marriage and babies were far from Sarah Gay and Steve Kemp’s minds. Though it was love at first sight, as the years went by, Sarah thought the childhood sweethearts would remain forever boyfriend and girlfriend. She remembers: “We met years ago. We were from the same area and knew each other through friends. We got talking and swapped numbers, like you do when you’re kids. We’ve been together ever since. I fell madly in love but honestly never thought Steve would want to get married or have babies.” As friends began to settle down, however, Steve’s ideas about the future seemed to change. And when son Ashley came along two years

ago, the family unit was formed – and marriage became the obvious next step. Sarah said: “We went away for a weekend in Bristol in November 2008. Steve said it was a little get-away so we could relax after our son was born – but to my surprise he proposed over dinner! I always imagined I would cry if it ever happened. Instead, I went into fits of giggles!” Sarah also hesitated in giving her nervous partner his answer until she had seen the ring. She said: “Bless him, he had borrowed an old ring from my jewellery box to get the right size.” Ahead of the big day, Steve and his eight stags headed to Budapest for a stag weekend where they dressed up as James Bond and hit the casinos. Hen Sarah went with her best girl friends to Prague for sightseeing, drinking and dancing.

Choosing the venue... Sarah and Steve had wanted a simple manor house wedding, with a civil ceremony. During their research into possible venues, however, they stumbled across Clearwell Castle in the Forest of Dean. Within the castle grounds was St Peter’s Church.

Sarah said: “I went to look at it with my dad and knew instantly I loved the castle and wanted to get married there. My dad is a practising Christian and so when we saw the church, we decided to have the ceremony there and the reception at the castle.

The dress... Within weeks of getting engaged, Sarah had unintentionally found and fallen in love with her wedding dress. Having spotted her favourite wedding dress shop exhibiting at a wedding show, she took the opportunity to look at what was on offer. She said: “My dress is pure silk, really plain, strapless with small detail under the bust. It is really quite simple. I did go to one other shop to try on some other dresses, but all I could think about was the first dress.” The couple’s bridesmaids – Sarah’s sister Davina Damsell and friend Lisanne Newlands – wore full-length dark dusky pink dresses by Alfred Angelo. Sarah carried a bouquet of her favourite flowers, ivory peonies and dark dusky pink tulips, while the bridesmaids had smaller versions wrapped in large green leaves. Son Ashley wore a suit which matched Steve’s and best man Matt Sims’.

Dreams can come true! | pg 9

Creative bride Sarah made all of the wedding stationery herself, carrying the theme colours of ivory and dark dusky pink throughout the invitations, order of service, seating plan, post box, favour boxes and table numbers. Pink ribbons and pearls were used on the cake, which Sarah put together from four plain Marks & Spencer cakes which she stacked on posts. She said: “I like making things so I got ideas from magazines and bought everything I needed from e-bay and Hobbycraft. I am a bit of a perfectionist so instead of leaving it to someone else it made sense to do it all myself!

The big day dawns... The night before the wedding, Sarah stayed at Clearwell Castle’s gatekeeper’s cottage with her mum and bridesmaids while Steve stayed at home with his friends. Sarah said: “My cheif bridesmaid, Lisanne put together a memory book to give to me the night before the wedding. That made me cry; it was really sweet.”

Tying the knot... On the day itself, the bride walked down the aisle alongside dad Robin to the music Canon in G. The 63 guests were treated to a reading during the ceremony by Steve’s good friend Rob Neale and the party

then enjoyed a meal which included tomato soup to start, roast chicken for main and a lemon tart for dessert.

An evening to remember...

Venue

Steve and Sarah’s first dance as Mr and Mrs Kemp was to Heaven (Candlelight mix) by DJ Sammy, a former dance song the couple had liked for many years. Sarah said: “We have always loved that song and it seemed to suit the occasion. We also had a dance to Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls – another favourite. The DJ announced it as the last dance and invited our friends and family to join us for it.” At the end of their big day, the couple spent the night in the bridal suite of Clearwell Castle which had a four-poster bed and Jacuzzi. Many of their guests stayed over too, so they were able to have breakfast together the following morning. Steve and Sarah then spent a wonderful week in the Maldives on honeymoon.

Lasting memories... As Sarah and her dad arrived in their car at the church, children at the primary school opposite the church all cheered. Sarah said: “That just made me burst into tears! It was such a lovely warm moment, with the church bells going. I’ll never forget that.”

Not sure how to make your lipstick last long enough for your wedding photographs? Panicking that your celebratory champagne will cause you to have red cheeks? Worried that your tears of joy will leave you with panda eyes? Whatever your worries about your bridal make-up, Kirsty from Bespoke Makeovers has the answer!

Q

I have fair lashes and want a good mascara that will help my lashes to look nice and long but not clog up. What do you suggest?

always advise my clients to work with two different A Imascaras. I love Max Factor and my best buys are both made by this brand. The first is Lash Extension Effect Washable Waterproof Mascara and the second is Max factor False Lash Effect Waterproof Mascara. To really lengthen your lashes, first use Max Factor Lash Extension Effect Mascara. Step-by-step: • With one eye half closed, place the mascara wand on to the very top of your lashes, getting as close as you can to the root, taking your time and giving the tops a really good coat. • Next, take the wand underneath the top lashes, to help lift your lashes out. Try to also thicken them by running the mascara wand from side to side slowly, moving the wand in an upwards direction. • To stop your lashes clogging and sticking together, wash out and dry an old mascara wand. Use this in the same manner as you would when apply your mascara. A dry wand will separate and remove any sticky and thick lumps on your lashes. • Once your lashes have dried, for a real false lash effect, use Max factor False Lash Effect Waterproof Mascara to add the wow factor. Use the False lash effect mascara on the out side of your lashes -

that's the outer third. This will give you a really beautiful, doe-eyed effect for a super lash look.

Q

My daughter is getting married and I want to look my best, but I have bags under my eyes. I don’t want to look ‘tired’ in the photographs. Help!

best way to hide under eye bags is by firstly A The making sure you are using the right colour foundation and concealer. Make sure both products match you! Check the products you wish to use by matching and blending against your lower cheek and collar bone. First apply your foundation making sure you take this product across your face, right under your lashes and over your eyes. When you have a good, even coverage, mix both the foundation and concealer together on your hand, ensuring a light even blend. Not too wet or dry, then tap a very small amount around your whole eye area. Again get right under your eyes. The best results come from the lightest application. Then add a little light reflective product like Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat, to and around your eye area. This will really lift away tired eyes. Remember with this product to go very lightly, you really don't want to over apply or you could end up with panda eyes! To book Kirsty please call: 07702 939055 Or send your questions to her at kirsty@bespokemakeovers.co.uk

Having a bad hair day? Worried that your curls won’t last until your reception? Whatever your wedding day worries, our resident expert Sara Marshall from Occasions Hairdressing has the answer…

Q

I'd love tumbling curls for my wedding hair but my mid length locks are not really ideal. What do you think of extensions?

weightless hairspray before and after you do each section, this helps to act like a barrier against the humidity. The other option (which I can offer) is to have your hair semi permanently straightened. The treatment is keratin based and gives the hair the ability to return to its original healthy, shiny, smooth condition. Keratin straightening will not make your hair poker straight. It's a much more natural look and can be used on all hair types. It normally takes one and a half to three hours depending on the length and thickness of the hair. This treatment also makes hair more resilient, so humidity, rain or perspiration will not affect the hairstyle. You do have to use a sulphate free shampoo and conditioner afterwards and the price range is £50 -£200 on average.

extensions are normally worn for a day, then A Clip-in you re-apply them whenever you want to wear them. These give a great result for the day even though they need little looking after. They are also a lot cheaper if working to a budget. Temporary extensions will last up to two weeks. The more permanent methods will last three to four months. That said, permanent extensions do not simply fall out after this time, they grow down with your hair. As a result they need to be removed by TRAINED PROFESSIONALS. Always brush the hair (with an extension brush) before shampoo and conditioning and rinse your hair in cool water to get a natural shine. Human hair - extended or not - will dry out with excessive sun exposure so be mindful of all the aftercare considerations at all times.

Q

I'm getting married abroad on a (hopefully) sunny beach. Problem is, my hair goes frizzy when it's humid. Help!

A One of the best ways to tame frizz is put a little hand lotion on your hands and run them through your hair. Beware though as too much will give hair a greasy look and feel. When straightening apply a little www.johnivorphotography.co.uk

Q

How do I create a full, 'Hollywood' big-hair style for my wedding day?

A Heated rollers can be used to turn flat, plain hair into

bouncy, full, Hollywood hair. If you are doing your hair yourself, just remember to keep the rollers in your hair until they are cold. Then carefully unpin and unwrap the rollers from your hair, one at a time, before flipping your hair upside down and separating the hair with your fingers. Return your hair to its original upright position and spray lightly with hairspray.

LOOK LIKE THE STAR YOU ARE WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM

Sure Slim

From finding the dress of your dreams to paying for a professional hair and make-up artist, nothing is left to chance when striving to look your very best on your wedding day. Of course, many brides-to-be feel it necessary to slim down a little too, but with the huge list of things to do, time flies and getting to the gym may be out of the question. That’s where a quick but sensible dietary programme can pay dividends. Sure Slim in Chelmsford offer a bridal package lasting 12 weeks which guarantees a weight loss (if desired) of 10 pounds a month using an individual, balanced dietary programme. Unlike many, Sure Slim is not a fad diet. It’s medically backed and revised by a doctor and a full range of proteins, carbs, vegetables, fruits and starches are consumed. Where Sure Slim differs from other plans is that each diet is taylor-made for the slimmer and takes into account her medical history and lifestyle plus any food allergies or intolerances and the effect on the metabolism of certain foods as revealed by a comprehensive, fasting blood test. Because it is medically supervised, Sure Slim is also perfect for those with Type 2 Diabetes, high cholesterol and high or low blood pressure. Even people with under-active thyroids will benefit, as will those who want to get pregnant or are going through fertility treatments. There are even breastfeeding diet programmes and diets for pregnant ladies so they do not put on any extra pounds. For more information, contact Rita O’Neill on the number opposite.

Tie the knot in style in one of these stunning stately homes or beautiful barns...

Enjoy the high life at Hylands house Hylands House is a spectacular grade II neo-classical villa, set in over 570 acres of historic landscaped parkland. Originally built in 1730 as a modest Queen Anne style mansion, throughout the years the house was enlarged and transformed by different owners. Chelmsford Borough Council purchased the estate in 1966, and has now completely restored the building to produce the stunning house you see today. The interior of the house reflects the different stages of the building’s history, with beautifully restored Victorian and Georgian rooms that evoke the opulence and elegance of their time. The exquisite white stuccoed exterior, with its graceful columns, brings to life the 19th century design of the celebrated architect, Humphry Repton. Hylands House truly offers a unique and memorable setting for your special day, and a chance to be part of history! Several rooms on the ground floor of Hylands House are licensed for Civil Ceremonies and Civil Partnership Ceremonies. These include the beautifully ornate Drawing Room and elegant Library, which provide exquisite settings for ceremonies with up to 80 guests. Alternatively, you may prefer the intimacy of the Small Dining Room or Boudoir, which are ideal for ceremonies with up to 35 guests. There are no minimum number requirements. Once you have a preferred date for your wedding, Hylands can hold a provisional booking for two weeks, to allow you to contact the Registrars at County Hall, Chelmsford and confirm their availability. Following your ceremony, while photographs are being taken, you may like to serve reception drinks to your guests. The Entrance Hall, Small Dining Room, Grand Staircase and Terrace each provide perfect settings. Formal meals for up to 80 people are taken in the beautiful surroundings of the Banqueting Room. For something more informal, buffets can be served in the Blue Room and Boudoir. The central rooms of the house are ideal for a celebration with up to 120 guests. The Blue Room and Boudoir have seating for guests and an area for an evening buffet. The Entrance Hall is perfect for dancing, and the Grand Staircase makes an elegant setting for an in-house bar service. The venue can also provide quieter rooms on our first floor for your younger guests or as a changing area for yourselves.

Brides ect are now incorporating Kent wedding venues. This issue we feature three of our favourites, but don’t forget to read subsequent issues which will bring you more stunning locations from The Garden of England…

BE A QUEEN FOR THE DAY AT COOLING CASTLE BARN Cooling Castle Barn is renowned for ensuring that each and every wedding is special. With only one wedding each day, staff can ensure that the Bride and Groom receive their undivided attention and have a day that they will never forget. They pride themselves on attention to detail and if unusual requests are made they rise to the challenge. Combine the romance of the occasion, the dignity of the Ceremony, the stunning atmosphere of such a fabulous location, together with the welcoming attentiveness of staff and you cannot fail to experience the wedding of your dreams. Cooling Castle Barn itself is built on four acres of beautiful grounds. The gardens are maintained to the highest of standards ensuring that the whole day is perfect. The garden and patio areas are ideal for entertaining guests on hot summer days and warm summer evenings. On cooler Autumn and Winter days the surrounding area is stunning and the subtly lit barns are warm and welcoming. The three adjoining barns encompass a garden, patios and pavilion, and together they suggest an ambience of rural tranquillity combined with a beautiful historic backdrop to create a truly memorable occasion. Tithe Barn - The imposing original king and queen post structure of this traditional 16th/17th Century tithe barn reaches to an impressive height of nine metres. The exposed beams, rafters and red Kent bricks are enhanced by atmospheric lighting designed to highlight the features and fabric of the building. Accommodation: Experience luxury at The Stables, Cooling Castle Barn. Accommodation is a stunning combination of old and new. Externally it makes a charming impression with substantial oak timbers, Kentish red brick and weatherboarding which perfectly blends with the barns and the surrounding historic scheduled monument. However, internally each room is uniquely striking and contemporary, with technology and comfort provided to the highest possible standard. There are 15 luxury bedrooms available. All have en-suite facilities; with power showers in upper-level rooms and baths (with showers) in lower-level rooms. These rooms are all individually climate controlled with under floor heating in all bathrooms, together with ironing/tea/coffee facilities for your comfort. Flat screen TV’s with free-view will be provided for entertainment. The aim is luxury, so to this end you will find Egyptian cotton bed linen, duck feather and down duvets, comfortable mattresses, gowns, slippers, a hairdryer and extravagant bathroom products in all rooms. Scenes

B e h i n d T h e

Every issue we go behind the scenes to discover the real stories of the people who make your wedding day go with a swing. This issue we kick off with Linda and Vanessa, Directors of The Main Event Company, and the brains behind Brides Etc…! These two ladies really know how to put on a good show! They organise over 30 wedding shows each year in Essex, Kent and Herfordshire and also publish Brides Etc Magazine. Their determination and business acumen has developed their companies to where they want to be....great wedding shows, a beautiful Bridal magazine and more to come... power to the girls! Linda Grant (right) 56, is married to Mike. They have twin daughters aged 35. Vanessa Chakir, 40 is mum to two girls, Amina and Lena, and is engaged to fiance Henry...

Hi ladies, tell us a bit about your background L: I’ve worked within the wedding industry and in a management role on and off for years selling space on two regional wedding magazines and managing teams of advertising sales staff. I was responsible for recruiting, training and managing a team of up to 30. V: I worked in Advertising sales, Management, Media, On-line media, Event Management, sales, sales and more sales! How did you meet? L: At the Essex Chronicle. I was Classified Manager and Vanessa was Telesales Manager. We hit it off straight away. We worked together twice more for the same companies before finally going into business together. Who came up with the idea for The Main Event Company? L: The opportunity came to me when venues were asking me to organise a wedding show for them as I had the contacts and capability. I rang Vanessa up at 7.30am one day after being awake all night excited by the idea. She understood the concept and there was no stopping her!

How did you go about starting your business? V: As we both knew the industry and had great contacts, that helped. However, we still took advice and courses. It was hard work, but worth it! Define your roles L: Vanessa is IT, technical and a quick thinker. I am figures, procedures and practical. What do you offer that other similar companies don’t? L: The very best marketing package for businesses within the wedding service industry! We organise over 30 wedding shows each year throughout Essex, Kent and Hertfordshire, combined with the only free bridal magazine, Brides Etc. Clients can meet the brides at the wedding shows and do business face to face and market their business within our magazine. We offer a very personal, professional service built around our clients requirements. Why Brides etc? V: It was a natural progression. Our wedding shows are the perfect vehicle to distribute the magazine direct into the brides hands - and we love a challenge! Where do you see the company going in the future? V: We’re developing faster than I could have ever imagined! We moved into our new offices back in November and now have five staff working for us. We have so many plans for development. It's great! Vanessa, how would you describe Linda? Linda has amazing passion and flare for whatever she does. No one will stop her incredible determination. She will never be beaten or messed about. She’s a great woman. And Linda, what does Vanessa mean to you? Vanessa is hard-working, tenacious, determined, professional and has a great sense of humour. She’s a very kind person who is supportive and able to keep me going when things gets tough. I couldn’t do this job without her and I know she feels the same. Linda and Vanessa would like to take this opportunity to thank their clients, family, friends, staff and all who have supported them in their venture. www.mainweddingsandevents.co.uk

Bride: Samantha Munro, 28 Groom: Andy Goudie, 31 Home: North Stifford Venue: Hylands House Date: May 15th 2010

When Andy proposed to Sam minus an engagement ring, he came up with a novel replacement to slip onto his shocked bride-to-be’s finger. Luckily he had the real thing when the couple became husband and wife in May this year!

An office romance... Andy and I met in September 2005 when I started working for Coutts Bank in London. Though we were on different teams we worked from the same office, and while we noticed each other straight away, we each assumed that the other was in a relationship. It wasn’t until early December of that year - at the office Christmas party of all places - that we finally discovered we were both single. We laugh that it’s a cliché, but we started chatting and just couldn’t stop! The next day we sent a few emails back and forth and arranged our first date for mid December at a bar in Covent Garden. By the end of the night we both knew we wanted to see each other again, time had just flown and we really clicked. Andy had such a lovely manner about him, he made me feel safe and secure and he was such a kind man. In the name of

professionalism we felt we should keep our relationship quiet at work, which was hard, but luckily it wasn’t too long after we got together that I was asked to set up a new Coutts office in Chelmsford so we were able to ‘come out’! Six months later I moved into Andy’s flat in Welling, Kent and rented out my Essex apartment.

The proposal... I wasn’t expecting Andy to propose at all. We’d lived together for a year, then sold our flats and bought a house together in Essex. We also had a major holiday planned for December 2008 in Thailand so we had a lot on our plates, but I later found out he’d been planning it for ages! Unfortunately, we had to cancel our holiday a week before we were due to fly as there was a civil uprising in Bangkok. At the last minute we found a 14 night Caribbean cruise at a bargain price. It was on the last night of the cruise, December 19th, which was also my 27th birthday and we were docked in Barbados. Andy was acting very strangely that day. He dressed overly smartly for dinner and had a drink before we left our cabin

which wasn’t like him. To celebrate my birthday Andy had booked a table at the lovely Marco Pierre White restaurant on board, but as the room began filling up Andy got more and more agitated. I just didn’t understand it and had no idea that he was planning to propose over the meal but had decided it was just too noisy. When he suggested going for a walk on deck after we’d eaten, I must admit I wasn’t too keen. While it had been boiling hot all week, my birthday had seen the skies open and it had rained solidly all day. Now it was hot and drizzly – just the sort of weather to make my naturally curly hair, which I’d spent ages straightening, go all frizzy, but Andy was insistent. As it happened the rain had stopped and we walked to the top deck to take in the wonderful views. ‘Isn’t it lovely?’ I asked but there was no answer. As I turned around there was Andy, down on one knee in a puddle, with a box in his hand. I was speechless as he handed me the box and I opened it, but instead of an engagement ring there was a jelly Haribo ring! Andy had decided he wanted me to choose my ring myself, but had needed to give me something.

Wedding

With this (jelly) ring... I thee wed!

‘Will you marry me?’ he asked. I laughed and cried at the same time, but of course I said yes straight away. It was a lovely moment. Andy slipped the jelly ring on my finger and we went and told the friends we had made on board, though we had to wait a few hours to call our parents as it was 4am UK time. We flew home the following morning and began making wedding plans on the flight. A few days later we replaced the jelly ring with a beautiful platinum, brilliant cut diamond from Beaverbrooks in Bluewater, though I did keep the original jelly ring in a box by the side of my bed.

Planning the big day... I wasn’t sure whether I wanted a big white wedding at first. Andy said he didn’t care how or where we tied the knot, but it soon became apparent that he wanted to make the day as special and as magical as he could, and the more we talked the more I realised I wanted that too. Hylands House in Chelmsford had always been in the back of my mind. But we thought it would be way too expensive. We looked at a few other venues but finally approached Hylands and were pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t out of our price range at all. We opted for 80 guests at the civil ceremony with 40 people in the evening. We booked the

venue in February 2009 and I asked my cousin Terri Goldsmith, 25 and my sister Stacey Munro, 23 to be my bridesmaids. They were thrilled of course, but just at the point of ordering the dresses Stacey discovered she was pregnant! As she was due three weeks before the event we decided between us that it would be too much pressure on her, so while she would be on the top table, I opted just to have Terri by my side.

The last days of ‘freedom’... Three weeks before the wedding, Andy went to Bournemouth with 15 of his friends and his dad for his Stag weekend. Then a week later myself and six girlfriends went to Brighton for my Hen weekend. But all I could think about was the wedding. I just couldn’t wait to become Andy’s wife. Although we lived together, it would be the icing on the cake and I was so excited!

The big day dawns... The night before the wedding, myself, my parents Jean Munro and John Lamb, Stacey and her boyfriend Matt, their gorgeous baby Ruby and Terri booked into The Ivy Hill Hotel in Margaretting while Andy and his best men stayed at our house. My aunts, uncles and cousins had all travelled

to be with us and we went for a meal in Chelmsford. The weather had been awful all week, but the morning of the big day itself was sunny and bright. I woke at 5am, full of excitement. Terri opened a bottle of champagne at 6.30am and the family, plus my brother Michael, who was our only usher, had breakfast. Soon it was time for Gail from Blushing Brides to tackle my hair, clipping in extensions and taming my curls. Next my make-up artist Sinead arrived, and just as she’d finished and I’d got into my dress Paul, the photographer arrived. The fact that we had to dodge some of our guests who were checking in to stay that night really lightened the mood. It was like a comedy sketch as mum and dad kept me hidden from prying eyes! The ceremony was set for half past one and as Hylands House was just half a mile away, the driver of our beautiful 1929 Vintage Arrow car had offered to take my mum and Terri to the venue first and then return for dad and me. It was nice having quiet time with dad, though we did get nervous waiting for the car to come back. We later found out that Michael had panicked when he saw a wedding car arriving because the guests were still milling around outside. Forgetting that mum and Terri were coming first, he rushed everyone inside and there they sat as they waited for the car to make its way slowly back to Hylands!

The ceremony...

whispered ‘Just dance’ and no one

Andy and I combined different vows to make the civil ceremony truly ours and it was beautiful! Andy was thrilled to see me in a traditional dress and veil and the look in his eyes really melted my heart. I didn’t cry though, well not until my friend Sara Aylott did her reading. I couldn’t look at her because I knew if I did she would cry too! Our other reading which Andy’s sister Sarah did was wonderful too. In fact the whole ceremony was just fantastic, from Andy’s Cousin Jon who played the piano to Kirsten Smith who played the harp while our guests enjoyed welcome drinks and canapés while Andy and I had our photographs taken, it couldn’t have gone any better.

every minute of the evening. Mum

The wedding breakfast... Being announced as the Bride and Groom, taking our places at the top table and looking out to see all the people we loved laughing, drinking and enjoying themselves was a real highlight of the day and the wonderful menu of smoked chicken and avocado salad followed by fillet of salmon with citrus hollandaise, buttered courgettes vine tomatoes and new potatoes rounded off with Eton mess for the ladies and toffee and banana crumble with custard for the gents was spot on. After the meal our evening guests started arriving. You can’t have a proper band in Hylands as drums aren’t allowed, but we still wanted to have live music, so we found a duo called Essence. Tim sings and plays the keyboards while Nina sings and in between their live sets Tim DJ’s . Our first dance as a married couple was to Take That’s Rule The World. Andy and I had done a lot of practising at home and had cobbled together a little routine, but the moment we took to the floor Andy said ‘I’ve forgotten it!’ Luckily my dress covered his feet and I

was the wiser! I must admit I loved and Terri bustled my dress up at the back – which had looked easy in the shop but wasn’t as easy in practice - and I took off my veil, but I

Matters

M u s i c

MUSIC can make or break any party. Get it right and people will be on their feet and remember what a fun time they had. But, get it wrong and the atmosphere and memories can be ruined. James Cresswell, from Essex DJs (www.essexdjs.co.uk), reveals his top tips for making the right choice when booking a DJ. • Don’t buy just on price. Many low cost DJs will not have things like public liability insurance or have PAT Tested equipment. Some venues will require this. Also, they may not be paying tax on their earnings so there is a chance they may not attend your booking. Definitely be suspicious of a “cash on the night” agreement.

• Get a recommendation, if possible. Every testimonial on our website is genuine. • Book an early set up. You want to avoid a DJ bringing equipment through your venue and making a noise setting up when there are guests about. • Think about background music for your meal. A lot of venues will provide this or if you book an early set up with us we can leave some background music on. You will then have all the equipment set up for the evening party. • Don’t let the party go on too long. Many of your guests will have left and you really want the party to finish on a high.

• Book with a company, you then have back-up if your DJ is sick or for whatever reason is unable to attend your booking. • Avoid booking a specialist DJ such as a club DJ or a specialist in one genre. They are likely to cost more and will not have the broad range of music a mobile DJ will have. • Book an experienced DJ. They will have an excellent knowledge of what will work on the dance floor.

C l a s s y

As your wedding day approaches, don't forget that it's just as important for your man to feel pampered and special too. Our new regular feature 'Let's hear it for the boys' gives the low down everything from male wedding fashions to skincare; hairstyles and stag weekend ideas. This issue we turn the spotlight on Coes, a leading light in the field of men's formal hire wear.

Is there something that your man would like us to feature? Email julie@bridesetc.co.uk and we'll do our best to help!

Why Coes? With over 80 year’s experience of dressing men and boys for special occasions, Coes has a well deserved reputation as a leading supplier of formal wear. From stylish dinner suits and exclusive wedding attire, to fancy waistcoats, accessories and hats, Coes stock everything that a Groom could require to complete his wardrobe. Added to the huge range of exclusive and constantly updated stock on offer is an award-winning standard of customer service and quality.

A helping hand Choosing a wedding outfit can be as tricky for a Groom as for a Bride, and that’s where Coes fully trained staff really come into their own. Unlike many hire businesses, Coes employ people whose only function is to deal with formalwear hire. Customers are given specialist service from focused assistants and can often try on their chosen outfits at the fitting stage to ensure they are correctly fitted in preparation for the big day. With over 30 suit options on offer and a broad selection of fancy waistcoats and accessories there is something for everyone at Coes. They even stock Highland Wear and Shervani Outfits to hire or buy. There is also a ‘Special Making Service’ for Brides and Grooms who want

something especially made in their own cloth such as a tie or a cravat for example.

Value for money Quality, service and choice are the cornerstones of Coes. Their aim has always been to pitch their prices at a mainstream level and to offer value for money without taking anything away from the very special service they offer. As their representative states: ‘We hope your readers will visit us and see for themselves what we have to offer. Our aim is to make the men’s visit an enjoyable experience, so everything is tailored to ensure this happens.’

A long established tradition with a local touch Coes is one of the longest established menswear hire businesses in East Anglia, with branches in Ipswich, Dovercourt, Felixstowe, Beccles and Lowestoft, plus formalwear departments at Golding of Newmarket and Goddards of Kings Lynn. Their Maldon shop is conveniently located in the town centre and is open Monday to Saturday 9am to 5.30pm. As well as the usual wonderful array of formal wear the Maldon store also offers a broad selection of men’s fashion and footwear in a wide array of chest sizes and fittings.
