Hi Girls,
Welcome back to the best free bridal magazine in Essex, Kent and Hertfordshire. We’re thrilled at the reaction we have had since our recent facelift, with lots more suppliers and brides discovering just how fabulous we are and wanting to feature in our pages and take part in our brilliant wedding shows being held in a town near you over the next few months (see p35, 46 and 57). Of course that means we’ve had to work doubly hard this issue to bring you something even more spectacular – and we hope you’ll agree that we have! So, while many of you have been sunning yourselves on your well deserved summer holidays, we’ve been glued to our phones and computers in sunny Essex, putting together our ‘active’ issue. Why ‘active?’ Well, while we like nothing better than curling up on the sofa with a glass of vino, a chick flick and a box of choccies after a hard week at work, we realise that there are many ‘get up and goers’ out there - the sort of women who will appreciate a bridal boot camp (p32 and 33) or a honeymoon which offers a little extra – think dance, horse riding, surfing or diving along with the usual sun, sea or sand (p90). Even our wedding venues have a little something more this issue with many nestled within glorious golf courses. Of course we haven’t forgotten your regular favourites either – real weddings, hair and beauty, freebies, plus the best in bridal fashion. Over at Grooms Etc – our dedicated pages for the man in your life – we’ve really outdone ourselves. There’s funky shoes, stag ideas plus the chance to win a personal wine tasting session. Not bad! Until next issue, good luck with your wedding plans!
Julie Burniston Editor Ps Do you like the magazine? Can we do better? What would you like to see more of? I’d really like to hear from you with your comments and questions, so please get e-mailing me on julie@bridesetc.co.uk

Bask in the sun in a beautiful setting, don your wellies and fancy dress (both are a must!) while having a sing song in The Piano Bar before heading to the main stage to see some superstars in action. Advice
Many brides dream of ditching their glasses and contact lenses and having perfect vision for their big day. Mr C T Pillai, Medical Director of Harley Street Clinic Advanced Vision Care, tells you everything you need to know about laser eye surgery…
There’s no need to be nervous… ‘Treatment really is quick and painless. The most comfortable and popular procedure is LASIK (Laser Insitu Keratomileusis). This involves creating a thinhinged flap on the cornea with a precise computer controlled surgical instrument or with the latest bladefree method, Intralase. The flap is carefully folded back so the tissue can be re-shaped by a laser and is then folded back into its original position to heal naturally without the need for stitches. A contact lens is placed on the eye for the first 24 hours to protect the cornea and is removed by your surgeon the day after treatment.’ Surgery is over within half an hour! ‘Surgery will start when you are lying down, comfortable and ready to begin. Anaesthetic drops are put in the eyes first so, at worst, you will just feel a few seconds of discomfort. You may see a flashing light and after 25 minutes treatment on both eyes will be complete!’ LASIK can be done just a few weeks before your wedding… ‘Even if your wedding is only a number of weeks away, you can still go ahead with treatment and be back to normal in time for the big day. Recovery begins as soon as you sit up in the operating theatre and after just 24 hours you will see a huge improvement. Your
vision may be a little hazy to start with so we advise against driving for the first day. Your eyes may feel a little dry during the recovery period, but your surgeon will provide lubricating drops which will also help speed the healing process.’ There’s a procedure for everyone… ‘Technological advances in eye surgery mean that no matter what problems you have with your eyesight, there is virtually always a solution. If LASIK does not suit you, your surgeon will be able to explain the other options.’

Bride: Elizabeth Castle, 29 Groom: Corporal Craig Simpson, 30 Home: Colchester and Germany Venue: Gosfield Hall, Essex Date: 19th March 2010
At the Double! It was a cold evening in October 2008 when I met Craig. My friends and I had popped into a local pub in Colchester where I lived, Craig was based at barracks in the town. I’d never met a soldier before and I don’t know what I expected, but Craig was warm, gentlemanly and made me laugh. He’d just got back from a six-month tour of duty and was due to go to Afghanistan in February 2009. We really hit if off that night and luckily had five months to get to know each other better, before he left the country again. From the start I realised that this relationship would be very different to any I’d had before. Craig and I saw each other only when he could get away, which was sporadic. It was tough, but I’d fallen madly in love and soon came to the conclusion that it was pointless moaning. We just had to cherish every moment together and, unlike many Army girlfriends, at least I got to spend Christmas with my man, which was wonderful.
A bittersweet romance
As the time drew near for Craig to leave for Afghanistan, I began to feel very scared and anxious, but I knew I’d make matters worse if I fell apart. I smiled and wished him well and had to be content with a relationship that consisted of letters, emails and the occasional phone

When Elizabeth and her soldier fiancé decided to get married they knew they would have to plan their celebrations around his leave time, but even Liz was amazed that she managed to pull off such a glorious day with just eight weeks to plan it!
call. Thank goodness I had close friends and family around to keep me going as I counted down the days until his return in May 2009.
A heartfelt re-union
The months without Craig seemed to drag, and it was especially hard being alone on my birthday in March. It was wonderful when he did come back and, as it was unseasonably warm, Craig decided to throw me a ‘surprise’ belated birthday party. I was given orders to stay away until the allotted time and then I was allowed into the garden. All my family and friends were there and as I walked towards Craig, the music suddenly changed and on came ‘our song’, At Last, by Etta James. As he is such a joker, I imagined Craig would suddenly break into a silly dance routine or something, but he didn’t. Instead he got down on one knee, handed me a stunning diamond ring and asked me to marry him. I was in such shock that I burst into tears – along with most of the guests! I couldn’t believe he’d managed to arrange a proposal while in Afghanistan. He and mum had been in cahoots all along and he’d even sent her out to scout for the ring before rushing out and buying it!
A life apart
I knew my life as an army wife would be hard. There would be long periods of separation and as for living together before marriage, that was out of the question as the army are very traditional. Then, to make things worse, our happiness was shattered when Craig was posted to Bury St Edmunds, so while we were in the same country we could only see each other at weekends and sometimes not even then.
Our gorgeous little boy Harry was born at St John’s hospital, in Chelmsford, weighing six pounds eight ounces and there couldn’t have been a prouder daddy.
Wedding plans
In the summer of 2010, Craig had become a Corporal and as part of his promotion we knew he would be re-posted at some point. Neither of us expected it to be to Germany! That news and the fact that I had now fully recovered from Harry’s birth, spurred us onto re-organising our wedding. Of course we had to fit A surprise discovery the ceremony in around Craig’s leave and that left me Because I couldn’t live on base with Craig until we’d precisely eight weeks to do everything! We decided tied the knot, we decided to plan our wedding as to marry in Essex and as luck would have it Gosfield quickly as possible and aimed for summer 2009. We Hall, the venue I’d fallen in love with while looking hadn’t even started planning when I began to feel very on the internet, had a cancellation eight weeks later ill. At first a pregnancy didn’t cross my mind because on August 10th. I paid a visit I suffered from endometriosis and booked it on the spot. and Craig knew we may need That same day my mum Lynne “I knew we would have to delay extra help to start a family, an and I went to a dress shop in the wedding!” issue he was totally supportive Chelmsford. I knew my dress about. It was only when the would have to be ‘off the peg’ sickness persisted that I took a as I didn’t have time to have lots of alterations made. test on May 23rd with Craig by my side and was in There it hung, on the hanger looking well, just ok, total shock to see the blue line! We were going to be but when I tried it on – wow! It was the dress of my parents, and while we were both thrilled and excited, dreams! Two huge decisions made in the space of a I knew we would have to delay the wedding. This baby few hours. I was on a roll! was just too precious and I didn’t want to put myself under any undue pressure.
Baby makes three
The decision to reschedule the wedding was a good one because I had problems with my pelvis, I was laid up in bed for the first three months of my pregnancy and had just two months of feeling okay before I had to go back on bed rest! All through this period I had to cope practically alone. Craig only managed to get back for one scan, but at least he’d be there for my elective c-section on January 11th 2010 and then with me for a whole two weeks of paternity leave. Bliss!

Falling into place
A few days later mum and I were in Moss Bros organising Craig’s Best Man, Gavin Harrop, and my dad’s suits. Later that day we met our photographer, Paul Webb. Paul really ‘got’ me and I loved his work. Once again I booked him immediately. After that everything fell into place. My maid of honour was my sister Jo. I got her dress from the Mary Rose Boutique in Chelmsford, and my flower girls – nieces Chelsea, Rosie and Olivia looked gorgeous in their Monsoon dresses. My friend Ella offered to do my hair and the rest of the organisation was done in the evening over
the Internet, when Harry was asleep. It was a mad whirlwind and I didn’t even get time for a hen night, although Craig managed a stag do in Germany which I ribbed him about!
Goodbye single life
The night before the wedding was spent at home with my ‘Best Man’, my gay friend Dickie. Dickie and I had known each other since we were 20. He’d been so supportive over the years, and I couldn’t think of anyone better to have a laugh, and a few (but just a few!) drinks with. Craig had arrived two days before the ceremony and was staying with my parents and his best man in Essex. I went to bed feeling happy but nervous and hoping that the rain, which had come down solidly all week, would hold off for us.
The late Ms Castle
The next morning, Dickie and I were up bright and early and amazingly the sun was shining! I did my make-up, then we headed to Gosfield Hall to get ready for the 12 O’Clock ceremony. Harry was safe with a nanny we’d hired and I was free to get dressed with mum and my girls. All was going well until it was time to get into my dress. For some reason we just couldn’t get it to sit right. It took three attempts, and I was half an hour late!

Groom wore his army number 1 dress uniform and the ushers and father of the bride wore Moss Bros hire.
We did it!
Finally, I was ready for action. Dickie had gone on ahead to act as an usher and my dad Jim took my arm. Dad isn’t an emotional man, but his eyes looked glassy with unshed tears as he walked me down the aisle to the strains of Celine Dion’s The Colour of My Love. As an ex-stage school pupil I was taught to ‘get on and do it’ and not to blub, but to be honest all I could feel was overwhelming happiness, not tearful at all. The same couldn’t be said for Craig. As he stood at the altar in his gorgeous dress uniform looking so handsome, I saw he was extremely emotional. It was so touching. Thankfully, we made it through the ceremony and were both wreathed in huge smiles, as we were finally pronounced husband and wife and walked back up the aisle to Just the Way You Are by Bruno Mars.
I have my say
when, at 11pm, our Army friends had to go back to their base in Bury. Thankfully, many other people stayed overnight at Gosfield Hall and we were all able to enjoy a wonderful breakfast the next morning. Craig and I got just two nights together as man and wife, which we spent in a hotel in Colchester, then it was back to reality as he had to return to Germany. This time though Harry and I were able to join him for good two months later.
Dance off
The future for Craig and I will always be uncertain, that’s the life of an army couple. Being in Germany means I really miss my family and friends, but at least I have my husband by my side. Craig flies out to Afghanistan in September and after that who knows where he will be posted. But we take every day as it comes and make each moment count.
As we posed for wedding pictures, and our guests enjoyed canapés and champagne, I realised just how much Craig and I had to look forward to. We’d never lived together, and while that sounds old-fashioned it was incredibly exciting. At that moment I knew I wanted to make a speech about just how much Craig meant to me, so after the wedding breakfast and speeches from Dad and Gavin, I had my say, a rare thing for an army wife!
Taking each day as it comes
The biggest surprise of our wedding – for our guests anyway – was the ‘dance off’ that Craig and I performed. It started off like any other first dance with Etta James ‘At Last’, but then went into a medley of music from the film American Pie. Everyone screamed with laughter! Sadly the festivities ended all too soon

Serena Bridal is a haven for the discerning bride. A friendly and intimate boutique which helps you find the gown of your dreams with experienced fitters to assist - and not another bride in sight! Owner Michelle tells us more…
This well known bridal boutique is based in a secluded part of Wickford, Essex, and holds around 50 wedding gown samples, bridesmaid and mother of the bride outfits. The decor is hot pink, black and sparkly and features fabulous diamante wallpaper! The atmosphere inside is relaxed, with staff who get to know as much as possible about you and your wedding, and who use their wealth of experience to find your dream dress.
DELICIOUS DESIGNS
ABOUT MICHELLE
‘The boutique has recently taken on three new designers which is very exciting: Cosmobella, part of the Demetrios group; Sweetheart, part of the Sincerity group and Private Label, part of the Justin Alexander group. All these gowns offer something very different and will compliment our current collections from Eternity Bride; Romantica; Art Couture, Clarity Bridal and Opulence by Natalie M. Each gown is handpicked based on feedback from our brides. Although fashion does have some influence, we prefer to stock gowns that ‘real’ brides can look amazing in. We keep the prices down as far as possible too. Currently we only have one gown over £1000. The majority of dresses are £600 - £900, but we also have an amazing new collection from Clarity Bridal with all gowns under £499.
‘As a wedding planner my passion lay with gowns and dressing the bridal party, so it seemed a natural progression to set up a boutique which offered everything I would have wanted when I was looking for my own wedding dress. Aside from what the boutique offers, my extensive experience in the wedding industry means I can also give free advice and suggestions on other parts of the big day. I’m admittedly obsessed with wedding gowns and have my finger on the pulse as to what is available and on-trend, so if a bride suggests a type of gown we don’t have in stock, I’m usually able to suggest one we could bring in. I’m also available to my brides on text, email and Facebook, so if they have any concerns or queries they always get a quick response!
EXCLUSIVE AND PRIVATE ‘We operate on an appointmentonly basis with only the bride and her guests being allowed in. This ensures privacy and exclusivity.’ THE DRESS EXPERIENCE ‘Here at Serena Bridal we strive to be dedicated to our clients. Brides are assigned a personal consultant who will discuss her style, likes and dislikes, help her to select gowns to try on, dress her and offer suggestions for accessories. We may not have THE dress for every single lady, but each bride who leaves us will have a much clearer idea of what she is looking for and what suits her.’
AMAZING ACCESSORIES ‘In stock is a full range of veils from Nieve Couture and tiaras from Nieve Couture; Warren York and NLD. We also stock Jupon petticoats and lovely shoes including the most amazing wedges!’ Serena Bridal Tel: 01268 562447 E-mail: michelle@serenabridal.co.uk Website: www.serenabridal.co.uk Facebook: Serena Bridal of Wickford
MICHELLE LOVES… ‘This season lace is making a comeback and we have some gorgeous lace gowns in stock and are expecting a few more in the new collections. My current favourite is our Sabrina gown from Art Couture. It really has to be seen to be appreciated as the fabric is amazing. It’s at the top end of our price range, but I’ve seen similar gowns from other designers at more than twice the price! I’m also a huge fan of the Carnation dress by Opulence. It’s sparkly without being over the top and gives the most amazing shape and flat tummy to nearly all brides who wouldn’t be happy with that?’ Serena Bridal don’t offer dresses which are bespoke and made to measure, but they do offer a full fitting service for each bride, so the dress will be perfectly fitted to her.
dressed for success
Here at Brides Etc we understand that every woman is different, that we all have different body shapes and suit different styles. With this in mind we thought we would give you a helping hand by offering some advice when it comes to looking for THE dress! We’ve chosen six body shapes and have talked to a variety of experts who bring you top tips on how to play up your best assets and advice on how to disguise those bits you’d rather keep covered. Sit back and enjoy… Slim/Athletic
Description: You have the ballerina shape that so many people long for. You’re straight up and down, so enhance your curves to reduce the slightly boyish aspect of your figure and think about defining your waist with cuts that add emphasis.
Jules says: You are lucky in that you can get away with wearing draped fabrics such as silk, take advantage of your shape – after all, you’ve got nothing to hide. Also be aware that you may want to give your figure some shape, so maybe try a wide-set V-neck.
www.berketexbride.com
Rosie says: Lucky enough to be a skinny minnie? Slinky styles and silky fabrics are the perfect choice to compliment your svelte figure. Draw attention to your bust and hips with floral details and crystal embroidery to create the perfect hourglass figure. High necks and straps balance out the look. www.mariposa.uk.com
Hour Glass
Description: You have curves in all the right places with a large chest, wide hips and a small waist. Jules says: Embrace your curves! A 50’s style or fishtail dress would look great on you or go for something quite fitted and tailored. A dress that has gathering at an angle will help if you have a bit of a tummy.
Tall
Description: Whether you are wide or slim, your height has been the envy of many of your friends. Watch out Elle McPherson! Jules says: Don’t shy away from your height, make the most of it. Certainly don’t feel you can’t wear heels on your wedding day. Like Petite brides you should be careful about your proportions. Stay away from the empire waist as this can make you look ‘tent-like’. Choose a style that makes the most of that runway-worthy body such as a bias cut dress. Kirsty says: Generally taller ladies have the luxury of being able to wear more dress styles and therefore have more choice. However, this does not mean it’s always easy! Often taller ladies give an impression that they lack curves around their bust, waist and hips. Off the shoulder straps and A-line skirts give an overall hour glass shape. However, for those who love to show off their height, a long, elegant, bias cut dress is simply perfect.

Kim says: The hourglass figure is like a double edged sword as some brides will embrace their curves and others will want to hide their hips and thighs at all costs. From experience we listen to each bride’s dilemmas and guide them towards the dresses we know will flatter their figures. Small A-line or full skirted gowns always flatter the hourglass shape; avoid dresses or styles that have lots of gathers on the rear of the dress as this will add inches on the area you are trying to play down. One of our favourite gowns for this shape is the Dabra by Blue by Enzoani, it hugs the upper body making the most of the waist and bust line then skims the upper hips into a full skirted gown which is so flattering.

Apple
Description: You are more voluptuous than most of your friends. You’ve got a full bosom, a bit of a tummy, rounded hips and a butt that J-Lo would be proud of. Jules says: An empire line dress will look great on you. Maybe find something with a little detail under the bust which then floats down to the floor. Don’t go for a clingy fabric or a ball gown silhouette. Kirsty says: Apple shapes are usually better off staying away from shiny silk finishes and bias cut crepe silks as they cling and crease more obviously than the lighter fabrics such as chiffon, tulle or taffeta. A-line skirts are great for apple shapes as they help to make the waist look slimmer and balance out broader shoulders. V-necks can make a figure appear less rounded and divert the eye away from the hips.

Petite
www.berketexbride.com
Pear-Shaped
Description: You are small on top and wider at the bottom. Jules says: As you have a small bust you want to emphasize your shoulders to even out the proportions and draw the eye up. A dress with small, capped sleeves would work well or add a shrug or cape. Rosie says: If you are a bootilicious pearshaped bride and looking for your perfect dress then strapless styles are the way to go, with perhaps a bit of sparkle down the bodice or floral embroidery. This draws attention to your bust making the most of your fabulous curves, and balancing out your shape. Diagonal detailing and ruching helps with this. With this recipe for success you’re bound to find the perfect dress for your big day!
T
OP TIP
Description: You have a small frame all over which makes all those tall men want to protect you! Jules says: Be careful with your proportions. If you are wearing a long dress, you don’t want it to make you look shorter. You are one of the few shapes that can get away with wearing a short dress and there are some fabulous options out there. You should stick to a small to medium pattern on the bodice and avoid large or bold patterns.
www.fleurdelysbridal.co.uk
Kim says: Our petite brides find choosing a dress as daunting as our fuller figured brides. Often an A-line gown will balance out the lack of hip shape, enhancing the waist. One of our best selling styles for petite brides is the Evelyn by Maggie Sottero. The fluted hem with full train and sweetheart neckline is fabulous, giving the maximum wow factor. Gel cups can be sewn into the dress, enhancing or adding some often much needed inches to make the dress fit in all the right places.
JulesTaylor from Debenhams, Chelmsford Jules is Debenham’s in house personal shopper, so she knows all the latest trends. Why not take along your bridesmaids and your mum too so she can work her magic. You will be sure to have the best dressed bridal party once she’s done with you! Jules says: No matter what your friends say, no one is completely happy with their body and we all have gripes about how we
look. Your wedding day is such a special event that it’s important to remember not to get too caught up with the dress, the hair etc, but to enjoy your day and be able to look back on the photos knowing you did everything right. Jules’ Top Tip: When choosing your jewellery, remember to choose items that match your size, so if you’re petite choose delicate items and so on.

DON’T: Try to make your maids look hideous just so you’ll stand out. You want your friends to look stunning in their own way so you’ll have gorgeous pictures and happy memories. If your bridesmaids are similar in shape or size, opt for the same style but have each friend in a different colour or tone to complement your own dress and the wedding day theme.

DO: Have a brainstorming session. Let your bridesmaids’ voice what they will and won’t wear. Look over some bridal magazines to see what styles appeal to them. Then let the shopping begin! DON’T: Think all your bridesmaids have to be dressed alike. How about choosing a colour that they would like the dresses to be in and let each bridesmaid pick the style that she wishes to wear. This way, each person is wearing a dress that complements their shape and shows off their best assets.

RESCUE
ME!
I’ve recently got back from holiday and the sun has left my hair like straw. What can I do? A First of all I would suggest a trim to get rid of any brittle and damaged ends as this will give your hair a better chance of recovery. Next I recommend you use a good hair mask such as Moroccan Oil Restorative Mask to help restore, strengthen and revitalise your hair. It will also help prevent further damage. Use a good moisturising shampoo and conditioner (try Moroccan Oil Moisture Repair shampoo and conditioner) with lukewarm water. Just one wash will be fine, but make sure you rinse it properly as your hair can look dull if any residue is left behind. Use cold water for the final rinse if you can bear it as this will give your hair a lovely shine. I really love swimming, especially on holiday, but I’m worried about the chlorine in pools. What can I do to protect my hair? A It’s very important to look after your hair as much as your skin. If you’re on your honeymoon and going to the beach or pool, as hair absorbs chlorine and salt more when its dry, a good tip is to wet your hair first before applying a product with an SPF in it such as Redkin Colour Extend Sun Solar Screen SPF Spray to help protect your hair. Make sure you rinse it immediately after leaving the pool. My hair goes all flyaway and ‘kinky’ when it’s humid outside. How can I prevent this? A This is a problem lots of people have. I recommend the use of a good anti-frizz product such as John Frieda Frizz Ease before you go out. Try not to over wash your hair as this can strip its natural oils. Just like your skin, hair needs moisture to look and feel healthy, so use a moisturising and nourishing shampoo and conditioner such as the Moroccan Oil range. Also, using a very small amount of Moroccan Oil and smoothing this through your hair will help. Otherwise, try wearing your hair up as this will keep you cool, causing less sweating, which contributes to kinky hair.

Beauty and the
Bride
How can I make sure my make-up stays fresh throughout my wedding without having to resort to caking it on?! A Using a good quality foundation from a good make-up range is key to this. It may cost a little more than a cheaper product but it will last you much longer and you will get better results. Ensure you buy the correct foundation for your skin type and the correct colour by popping into a store like Mac or by going to a make-up counter in a department store. Another product which helps keep foundation in place all day and night is a primer. Mac have a great range called Prep and Prime. If your budget can’t stretch to a high-end brand, one of the best on the high street is GOSH Velvet Touch Foundation Primer (stocked in Superdrug, £12.99). It may be cheap but it recently won at the Beauty Bible awards. And finally, if you don’t mind a matt finish, use a good translucent powder or a powder foundation like Mac Studio Fix powder. Powder will make a huge amount of difference to the staying power of your foundation and ensure your skin looks great for your wedding photos.
Every bride wants to look her very best on her wedding day, but not everyone can afford to have a make-up artist on hand to freshen up her face through what is a very long day. That’s why it’s so important to choose make-up which will stay put all day long. This issue our Guest Editor Michelle MacGregor gives us her tips and advice on how to achieve make-up with staying power…

I’m bound to shed a few tears on my big day and live in fear of panda eyes. What can I use to keep my eye make-up in place? A This is a classic bridal make-up worry. Firstly ensure your eyes are ‘primed’ by taking your foundation over your eyelids and right into the corners. Next, press translucent powder onto the whole eye area. Doing this before you apply your eye make-up will give eyeshadow, eyeliners etc something to grip onto and more staying power. Also use waterproof eyeliner and mascara - this is a MUST for tear proof eye make-up! PS: When using a tissue, if you shed a few (happy) tears, PAT don’t RUB! My face looks really dull without my trademark bright lippy, but I know I will be doing a lot of kissing at my wedding and I’m scared of being left with an outline of lipliner and nothing else. What do I do? A There are a few options here. You could use a long wearing lipstick like Max Factor Lipfinity, Maybelline Superstay 24hr Lipstick or Mac Pro Longwear Lipcolour. They act like a lip stain and also have a top coat to give moisture too. Otherwise try this: use a lipliner very close to your lipstick colour and instead of using it to line your lips, pencil in your whole lip area with it. Then apply your lipstick over the top. Blot once. Then apply the lipstick a second time.

I’ve always struggled to find crease-proof make-up that actually works as my skin is naturally quite oily. This is now without a doubt my favourite product in my makeup bag and used in the correct way it can last for up to 15 hours – no joke! The Mac paint pot is designed as a primer for your eyes, so I just used a thin layer over my eye then dusted my usual eye-shadow over the top to create my desired look. The paint pots come in a whole variety of shades, but the neutral shades form the perfect base for natural wedding makeup. This is a product that I’ll be buying for years to come so I highly recommend it!
TOP TIP! The shelf life of an open bottle of perfume is about a year; an unopened bottle of perfume may keep for two years. Ideally perfume should be stored in a cool, dark place.

With your wedding day fast approaching your health and fitness campaign may not be giving you the results you had hoped for. That’s where boot camps come into their own. It’s not a walk in the park, but the tough training regime pays huge dividends in a relatively short period of time. Here we highlight some residential and non - residential boot camps in your area, and speak to a bride who has been through boot camp training for an inside view on this phenomenon…
Give your body a boost THE ASK RT EXPE
GET TO BOOT CAMP! Essex: Essex Boot Camp
Ex Royal Marine Glynn Roberts, 30 is the co-founder and managing director at Essex Boot Camp… What does Essex Boot Camp offer? ‘Over 200 outdoor boot camp sessions per month across the county. Sessions last an hour and we train in parks, woodlands and forests. We also run residential and bespoke packages for corporate companies, schools, sports clubs etc in the UK and abroad. On top of that we offer personal training to suit specific goals and nutrition information for people wanting to take things that one step further.’ Is the training very hard? ‘The training suits whatever goal you are aiming to achieve. So if you are training for a specific challenge like a marathon we will push your abilities to achieve that much more. If you are a complete beginner who just wants to be more active and lose weight, then you are constantly motivated to work to your own level to always get results.’ Why choose a boot camp over a regular gym workout? ‘For many reasons. We always say, that with the gym you need two different motivation goals – one, to actually turn up, and two, to work hard enough and correctly to the right level to actually see results. With us, you just need to turn up. Most people get stuck into a routine with the gym, therefore your body gets bored and you fail to see the changes. At EBC, we have never repeated the same session twice in five years. On top of all that, you are with like-minded people out in the fresh air. Its fun so you are more likely to stick with it.’
| pg 32
Do you offer specific classes for brides-to be or for women only? ‘All our classes are mixed but we do attract predominantly women as they tend to be more open to different ways of training. We run bespoke packages for small groups too, so if a bride wanted to do some training with just her bridal party, then this is something we can arrange.’ How long will it take to see results? ‘You can never give an exact timeline as everyone is different and there are NO quick fixes or guarantees. As long as you train on a regular basis and eat well you should start to see results in 6-8 weeks. It all depends on how dedicated you are to the goal you want. But what I will say, is with our support and training, you will get results if you are consistent with us. The training is tough but very effective – though far more enjoyable than being stuck inside the gym!’ Contact Tel: 07739-098790 www.essexbootcamp.co.uk
‘A short, sharp shock –but worth the pain!’ CASE Y STUD
Kent: GI Jane Boot Camp
Janine Davis, 33, attended the women-only GI Jane Bootcamp in Kent prior to her wedding to hubby Tony Hillman at Coltsford Mill, Surrey on August 20th 2009. In just a week, she lost half a stone and a staggering nine inches! ‘I’d been going to the gym and trying to eat healthily in the lead up to my wedding, but I still wanted to lose a few pounds. I went to boot camp from July 25th to August 1st 2009. On arrival I was weighed and measured and a ‘before’ photo was taken. Then I was shown to my room. I was sharing with a journalist from a health food magazine who was there for a few nights to report on the experience. Later, we met our fellow ‘recruits’ and our army trainers who we were instructed to call ‘’Staff X’’and ‘’Staff Y’’. The trainers asked why we had chosen Bootcamp, what we wanted to achieve and what our strengths and weaknesses were. We then had a fitness test to see what level we were all at. We were advised to get an early night ready for training to start the next day, but I don’t think any of us were prepared for our bedroom doors to be flung open at 5.50 am with staff blowing whistles and turning on the lights, screaming at us to be downstairs in 15 minutes! Every day we started with an hour and a half exercise before breakfast, usually a long walk or jog. After breakfast it was circuits until lunch, then the afternoon was broken up into team games and a very long walk. Our trainers were both really nice, and while they pushed us to our limits, we all actually had a good laugh with them. I didn’t so much enjoy the 1400 calorie a day diet though! It was devised by a ‘body chef’ and while I wasn’t hungry, I did miss my luxuries. My low day was the Thursday. We went to Bedgebury Pinetum to do a 10k bike circuit and Go Ape. It was absolutely pouring down all day so we got soaked on the bike ride and we were all just miserable as we sat with our packed lunch, surrounded by families eating cake and drinking hot chocolate, while we weren’t even allowed a cup of tea.
| pg 33
In the end the hard work was worth it though and the results spoke for themselves. I lost half a stone and nine inches and felt fab on my wedding day. Since bootcamp I have kept the weight off, but obviously was not able to keep up the eight hours of exercise a day while working full time. I then put a bit back on, but I have been going to Weight Watchers to keep myself on track and now weigh less than I did when I got married (annoying!). I’d recommend boot camp, if only to prove to yourself that you can be pushed further than you thought and to realise that there is no easy fix. Results only come with hard work, determination and being aware of what you’re eating.’ Contact Tel: 0208-3014353 www.gijanebootcamp.co.uk

Welcome to the Wedding Guild If you’re not aware of it already, the Wedding Guild is a brilliant, free to join service for brides-to-be which gives you details of wedding related news and events, discounts, advice and information on every aspect of planning your big day. We met founder Tracey Barker-Reeves who told us more about herself and her fabulous company…
Over 7,000 brides are currently on the database of the Wedding Guild.
Weddings are in my blood
My professional background is in sales and marketing in the banking and legal market, but I grew up in and around the wedding industry as my father ran a wedding car company for 28 years. Because of that I was used to attending wedding shows with him and meeting brides. It was originally my father’s idea to form the Wedding Guild. With so many wedding companies out there, there was nothing to separate the good, honest reliable professionals from anyone who just saw the industry as a way to make money without providing a good service. The Wedding Guild gives its service members a recognised platform in order to stand out from the crowd, and my couples are given the best guidance from quality recommended suppliers specific to the services they require and the county; Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire, London and Surrey, in which they live or where the wedding is taking place.
A unique service
The wedding Guild offers two services – one for couples who will receive information from IWG members offering the services they are in need of organising, details of wedding related news and events plus discount vouchers and offers provided by members. For service providers I offer a listing on the IWG website (logo, mission statement and link to their own website) plus access to a service and county specific database of registered couples and the right to display the IWG logo.
A wonderful job
Since it started in 2007, more than 20,000 couples have registered with the Wedding Guild when planning their wedding.

The best part of my job is having the ability to bring people together. Couples need reliable and quality providers for their day, and I have the contacts to introduce them. I also enjoy assisting small businesses to be more proactive with their marketing and thus create success for them too. My job is hard work, but it’s wonderful, and can make for some funny moments. For example I once had a foreign gentleman who didn’t really understand the concept of the Wedding Guild and wanted to register with me to actually find a bride!
Brides Etc love the Wedding Guild!
Brides Etc and Wedding Shows UK are both recommended members of IWG. When brides visit us looking for recommendations we tell them to pick up the magazine and to attend their wedding shows. We work very closely with both of them. IWG handles the front of house registration at all of WSL shows and we distribute Brides Etc to all couples in our goody bags. Between the three companies working together we are able to offer our brides so many different ways of sourcing the providers they need in order to plan their perfect day. For a company within the wedding industry we offer three different but complimentary elements of marketing for them to gain exposure for their company.

Dream Wedding Locations Finding the perfect wedding venue is an important yet difficult task. You probably have a picture in your head of your dream location, but finding everything you need all under one roof can be time consuming and frustrating. Never fear, over the next few pages Brides Etc have compiled some of the finest stately homes, mansions and halls to showcase what is on offer in your area. From beautiful landscaped gardens to rooms full of history, we are sure you will find something to make you smile. So why not get out at the weekend and take a better look at the stunning venues on your doorstep, starting with the incredible Boys Hall in Kent…
GRAND AND ROMANTIC
Boys Hall Willesborough, Ashford, Kent Boys Hall is one of the most beautiful buildings in Kent, located close to junction 10 of the M20 and Ashford domestic and International rail station. Grand and imposing though it is, Boys Hall is versatile and can accommodate wedding parties from the modest to the very grand on an exclusive hire basis, offering you an extra special private and bespoke venue for your special day. A Wonderful history Built in the 17th Century, the Hall is a Grade 2 listed property which retains many of its original features, and with over three acres of landscaped gardens, it’s the perfect setting for a wedding which captures the romance of days gone by. Boys Hall was originally built in 1616 by the Boys family who had previously been known as De Bois. The Boys family lived at the Hall for many years and were, so history states, great farmers and landowners. The Hall today sits and reigns majestically as it has done so for the past 400 years. A Day To Remember From the moment you decide to have your special day at Boys Hall you will be allocated your own personal wedding co-ordinator who will work with you, from your initial meeting right through to the planning stages and who will be there to take care of all your concerns on the day. Staff work closely with a team of local suppliers and are able to offer the services of florists, photographers, musicians and magicians if you so wish. These have all been personally vetted by the venue to guarantee a good service. Your ceremony will be held in either the stunning Manor itself or if you prefer the wonderful gazebo in the gardens. The building is free for your guests to explore while you utilize the magnificent grounds for your photographs, until the wedding breakfast is served. Whether it’s an intimate wedding for close family and friends or a buffet style wedding breakfast, Boys Hall’s experienced chefs will be happy to accommodate, using, where possible, Kentish produce and organic foods.

Brides Etc love… There are stunning bedrooms, all individually designed for you and your guests to book for your wedding night. Each is stunningly decorated and unique, with breathtaking features such as hand carved four poster beds; impressive furniture; free standing baths and luxurious décor. We particularly love the ‘Oriental’ which is lavish and striking and contains one of Boy’s Hall’s historical treasures; the wardrobe space which is actually one of four priest holes within the Hall - which gives this room added intrigue and fascination. Local wedding planner Helen Carter gave us her top five tips for planning your wedding…
1. Set a budget and divide this across the different aspects of your wedding. Identify two or three important key areas so you know where you want to spend more money and where you may be able to make savings. 2. Create a folder for all your wedding-related paperwork (e.g. receipts, contracts, etc), as well as a list of dates when suppliers require payments or information. Having everything in one place means you can find information easily. 3. Draw up a timeline and set yourself small, achievable targets
| pg 53
TWO MONTHS BEFORE 3 Double check guest list and send out invitations 3 Select gifts for important members of the bridal party 3 Check details with all your services 3 Choose wedding bands 3 Make hotel reservations for guests from overseas 3 Research local hotels and B&B’s for guests who may want to stay - include information with invite 3 Book make up and hair trial ONE MONTH BEFORE 3 One month before 3 Check wedding party outfits 3 Arrange hen and stag parties 3 Confirm music arrangements 3 Collect marriage license 3 Have your make up and hair trial confirm arrangements for the day TWO WEEKS BEFORE 3 Arrange name change 3 Notify venue/caterer of any last minute changes 3 Confirm arrangements for the day with bridesmaids and ushers etc 3 Do last minute shopping for gifts and for the honeymoon ONE WEEK BEFORE 3 Pack honeymoon case 3 Wrap gifts 3 Remind wedding party of exact timings for the day 3 Go over final details of ceremony and reception with all parties involved ONE DAY TO GO... 3 Relax! 3 Have a manicure and pedicure 3 Give ushers guests list and brief them on the seating plan for the ceremony 3 Check wedding dress THE BIG DAY 3 Eat! It could be hours till you sit down for your meal 3 Have your hair and make up done 3 Appoint family members to check ceremony and reception room 3 Enjoy your day!
for each month. This will make your to-do list more manageable. 4. Make sure you know exactly what is included in a venue or supplier quote. For example, check whether the quote includes things like VAT and set-up/delivery charges, as costs like these can make a big difference to your budget. 5. Try not to get too obsessed about the tiny details. Naturally you want everything to be perfect, but don’t let the preparations take over your life. Take time away from your planning to have fun together. Contact www.helencarterweddings.co.uk

Bride: Emily Daniels, 29 Groom: Jody Gray, 37 Home: Ashvale, Hampshire Venue: Brandshatch Place Hotel and Spa, Kent Date: August 6th 2010
Special Delivery Emily’s days as a shop assistant at Laura Ashley were brightened by delivery driver Jody, but it took a colleague to lock him in the shop before he plucked up the courage to ask her out! Seven years later, Emily received a special delivery of her own when Jody proposed, and last year they were married… I will never forget the first time I saw Jody. It was back in 2002 and I was working at Laura Ashley in Guildford while studying for a Degree in Retail Management at the University of Surrey. Jody was the store’s delivery man, and had the most wonderful smile and chatty, friendly manner. ‘Amtrack Man’ the other girls nicknamed him, and they’d giggle and whisper as he came in and made a beeline to talk to me. ‘Are you excited?’ they’d laugh as I knew a delivery was due. I’d tell them to be quiet, but secretly I’d think: ‘Oh please ask me out!’ I’d never have had the nerve to ask Jody, but it was obvious that I fancied him and I was sure he liked me too. ‘Something is bound to happen’ the girls would say, but I think they were getting fed up that nothing had! One day I was on my tea break in the staff room when one of the girls rang and said ‘Hurry up Emily, Amtrack Man is here and I’ve locked him in the shop!’ I had to rush back to the shop floor to let him out and then, finally, he asked me if I’d like to go for a drink. Hallelujah! Of course I said yes immediately and as soon as he’d gone everyone started cheering!
Worth the wait
My first date with Jody was at a lovely little Italian restaurant in Twickenham. While I’d built this date up

for months and months I can honestly say Jody didn’t disappoint. It was obvious from the start that he was a really special man. He was so trustworthy and kind. I’d had bad experiences in relationships in the past, but this just felt right. Perfect actually! He was fun and friendly and the perfect gentleman. After that date Jody and I saw each other practically every day and stayed with each other when we could. Once I left University a year later, Jody got a flat in Aldershot and I moved in with him and got a job in recruitment.
A special surprise
A few weeks after we began dating, Jody had announced that he had a daughter, Bethan, who was three at the time and who he cared for most weekends. I appreciated his honesty, but I must admit it was quite daunting at first. It was about a month later that I finally met Bethan and I shouldn’t have worried. We instantly took to each other and I found her to be a really lovely little girl. Luckily she was very young and so she has grown up with me always around, and I think the world of her.
Happy families
For the next six years Jody and I lived together happily, enjoying time with each other and with Bethan. Of
course I wanted to get married. It was something I’d always dreamt of even as a child because I could see what a wonderful relationship my mum and dad, Linda and Ken, have. They’ve been together for 40 years and, like me, thrive on family life. Marriage wasn’t as important to Jody however, as his mum Angela had passed away when he was young and he wasn’t that close to his dad, David. Still, we did talk about tying the knot. We’d even chosen a ring, a single diamond on a white gold band from Ernest Jones in Guildford, but Jody wouldn’t let me have it ‘until the time is right.’ One day in May 2009 we took our dog for a walk and Jody stopped by our favourite tree, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I couldn’t stop grinning as he slipped the longed-for engagement ring onto my finger.
A family wedding
everywhere but no one had it. Eventually we struck lucky with Pronuptia in London who said they could order it in. Luckily the dress was perfect and nothing else I tried on compared to it. For the bridesmaids, my best friend Gwen, Bethan and Jody’s niece Georgiana, I decided on a midnight blue theme. Gwen’s dress was from Coast and mum added a blue ribbon to Bethan and Georgiana’s white dresses from John Lewis, along with blue flowers to their pretty white headbands. I followed the colour scheme through for Jody and his best man Darryl Johnson’s suits, which we got from Moss Bros, plus I chose white roses and cute little blue flowers called ‘bluebies’ for my bouquet and the bridesmaids’ flowers, and our florist Karen Wolven even decorated our white Marks and Spencer three tier chocolate, vanilla and fruit cake with trailing blue and white blooms.
Once our engagement was official I got all caught up in the excitement of planning the wedding. I knew I didn’t want a church service or a large, glamorous do. I wanted to keep things simple. I don’t particularly like being the centre of attention, so the most important thing for me was to feel comfortable and to find a venue that was homely and relatively small. Sounds easy, but I looked at and turned down so many hotels and country houses before finding Brandshatch Place. I immediately fell in love with Brandshatch’s size, its
A family affair
In keeping with the family theme of the wedding I chose Sarah Daniels to do my hair. I’d known Sarah for many years, and wouldn’t trust anyone else. She gave me a fantastic ‘up do’ which shimmered with diamante pins. For the pictures I hired Sue Comber who works with my sister Anna Phipps and does photography part time. Then it was time to have one last girly night out before the big day. Anna, Vicky, mum and my friends went for Tea at the Ritz which was lovely and very refined. Then my friends and I said goodbye to my family and headed off for a night at a London cocktail bar, staying overnight at a hotel. Jody meanwhile was having fun with his stags paintballing and go-karting in Bournemouth.
intimacy and its staff. Because our chosen wedding date coincided with the Superbikes Weekend at the nearby Brandshatch motor racing circuit, the venue offered us a great discount and we were able to book the whole venue and all the rooms which avoided any chance of random bikers in leathers wandering in on our special day! That swayed it for us, and we booked on the spot.
Dressing to impress
My priority after booking the venue was my dress. I looked on the internet constantly and fell in love with a gown by Maggie Sottero called ‘Caprice’ with the most remarkable beaded detail on the back. The problem was finding a stockist! Mum and I rang

Wedding day nerves
The night before the wedding I stayed at my parents’ house and we all drove to Brandshatch Place the next morning so I could get ready for the 1.30pm ceremony. I don’t know what was wrong with me that day, but from the minute I awoke I was filled with nerves, literally shaking! To make matters worse I could hear the roar of the Superbikes as I neared the venue and burst into tears. I had to sit in the car outside as Jody had stayed at the hotel the night before and mum had to make sure he wouldn’t see me. It was like a Carry On film as mum and Sarah, who was already waiting for me, ran around making sure the coast was clear! As I hurried to my room I was in a state of panic, and even Gwen
looked at me, raised her eyebrows and said ‘It’s not good’. ‘Oh my gosh, are we going to hear this all day?’ I replied. Luckily by 12 0’ clock the noisy drone had died away, but my nerves hadn’t! Even though I was thrilled with my dress and hair I couldn’t stop shaking. Barry, the Toastmaster, said I was the most nervous bride he’d ever seen and my dad thought I wouldn’t go through with the wedding!
honeymoon – two weeks in sunny California - it was amazing! Being Jody’s wife is incredible but still feels a little odd at times. We joke as we say ‘Hello my wife’ or ‘Hello my husband’ – funny but lovely. A little while after the wedding I bumped into someone who used to work at Laura Ashley. ‘Are you still with the AMtrack man?’ she asked. ‘Actually, I married him’ I answered, proud as punch!’
All’s well that ends well
Thankfully as soon as the doors opened and I heard the opening bars to the entrance of The Queen of Sheba I knew I’d be fine. I could see Jody waiting patiently for me at the altar and I took a deep breath and smiled. And then just couldn’t stop smiling – and giggling! As dad and I walked in through the doors and the eyes of our 90 guests turned to look at me, my shoulders began heaving – I was in fits. I’m sure everyone thought ‘What is she on?!’ Don’t get me wrong, I was incredibly happy, just still so nervous and thinking ‘Oh gosh I’m going to do something stupid!’ Then I couldn’t get Jody’s ring on. When we’d tried it on in the shop it had fitted perfectly, but now it was just stuck and I had to really shove it to get it on. It could only happen to me!
A new beginning
Thankfully we got through the ceremony without me doing anything crazy and after that I was fine – all my nerves melted away – I was Mrs Gray and I was ecstatic! We’d enjoyed beautiful music throughout the ceremony from a string quartet, and then while Jody and I signed the register Vicky played the oboe. Jody had chosen the piece Gabriel’s Oboe and it was lovely. Our guests enjoyed drinks and canapés while Clint’s Jazz Band performed Rat Pack songs and Sue took pictures. Then it was off for a wonderful wedding breakfast. Later we cut the cake and then had speeches from Darryl and my dad. I hadn’t known Jody was going to speak, but he stood up and said he just had to mention his mum. I knew how close they had been and it was incredibly moving. I felt so lucky at that moment to have married such a wonderful, loving person and I couldn’t help welling up. As our extra 30 evening guests arrived the brilliant disco provided by the hotel began. Our first dance as man and wife was to Van Morrison’s Have I Told You Lately and the lyrics really couldn’t have summed up my feelings any better. Despite all the nerves earlier in the day I really didn’t want to say goodnight at midnight. It was just idyllic to be stood with those I loved eating bacon sandwiches looking out over the Kent countryside and reminiscing on what was such a wonderful day!
A day to remember
I couldn’t tell you what the highlight of my wedding day was - it went by so quickly and was so perfect. I can’t imagine anything that could have added to it. Perhaps I will remember the moment, back in our room, sat with Jody on our bridal bed surrounded by cards and presents. I’d insisted on opening everything in an effort to keep the day going. I was far too happy to sleep! Luckily I didn’t have time for post wedding blues, because two days later Jody and I jetted off on

Live music is so much more romantic than an i-pod playing Think how special it will make your parents feel to hear through small speakers. Imagine how special it will feel an acoustic version of their first dance song or perhaps to hear an incredible musician playing your favourite you have a childhood memory of your grandparent playing piece of music especially for you. Live music will make you a piece on the piano...wouldn’t it be lovely to hear this your wedding ceremony completely unique, personalised again on your wedding day. and unforgettable.
A great way to entertain your guests
During the drinks reception, live music becomes the focal point when you are busy having photographs taken. For some of your more distant relations, who might only appear in the big group photo, the drinks reception can be quite a lonely experience, so live music can act as an ice breaker and a talking point. People are happy to sit and listen to live music if they are nervous about meeting new people. A great live musician can dazzle your guests with fantastic playing, they can play requests on the spot and your friends will almost definitely be discussing the music and playing ‘name that tune’.

Best foot forward… Once you’ve bought your suit you may think you can sit back and relax, but what about those all-important shoes? No good leaving them till the last minute and ruining your big day with blisters or spoiling the look of an otherwise dapper outfit with mismatched loafers! Why not take a look at these traditional wedding shoes, read our tips and get some expert advice from suiting and booting experts, Moss Bros …
Expert Opinion
Our Top Tips
Moss Bros say… When choosing your wedding shoes, remember to consider comfort - bearing in mind you will be wearing them all day! In terms of styling, think about the diameter of the foot hole, narrower shoes for narrower legged trousers. Also, if you’re wearing a light coloured suit, it’s wise to ensure that the colour of the sole is similarly light in tone.
Traditional Look
• If you’re going for a traditional style suit, your shoes should be leather, lace up, and well polished. • The colour of your shoes should be based on the colour of your suit. Sometimes a brown shoe may look better than black. For example, black shoes will go well with a grey suit but brown will look great with a tan suit. • Remember that if you are going to be kneeling at the altar, then the soles of your shoes will be visible to the congregation - so remove all the labels! • Wear your shoes around the house for a few days after you buy them to soften the leather and make them more comfortable for the big day. • When buying online it’s important to order your shoes early enough for them to be exchanged if you need to. You want to allow enough time for your shoes to be delivered to you and enough time to find something else if you are not happy with them. Saddle Shoe £120 www.asos.com

THE GROOMS ROOM
Your complete guide to mental, physical and emotional fitness… Being fit isn’t just about having great pecs, it’s about being happy in mind and spirit too.The Grooms Room brings you expert advice and tips on how to feel and look the best you possibly can…
THE WORKOUT Every issue personal trainer Paul Hawley brings you easy to follow fitness tips. This issue it’s Russian Kettlebells. A fab, ‘quick fix’ workout! Using Kettlebells can seriously change the shape of your body. A session with them can burn up to 800 calories an hour as long as you follow a healthy diet too. What are Kettlebells? Kettlebells; iron cannonballs with a handle ranging from 4kg to 32kg, are an ancient Russian army training tool.
The Swing
Great for: bum, calves, shoulders and abs This exercise can be performed with one or both arms. Place the Kettlebell between the legs with the feet outside, hip width apart, in a plié squat position. Start with the knees bent, chest up and arm(s) straight, keeping elbows and wrists fixed. Using the legs, back, hips and core, pull the Kettlebell forwards up to head height, thrusting the hips and straightening the legs until the Kettlebell swings in a pendulum action to a ‘Superman’ position at the top and a semi squat position at the bottom of the swing.
BUILDING CONFIDENCE Confidence is about being happy with who you are and not needing the constant approval of others. Life Coach Steve Roach tells us more… 1. Think positive Confidence is a habit, and habits come from the way we think. The next time you feel a negative emotion, notice your thinking, it will be negative! To become more confident, learn to catch these negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones. 2. Visualise yourself as a confident person Visualisation and anchoring techniques are simple to do and an extremely effective way of building confidence. Close your eyes and picture how a confident you would look. Now remember a time when you acted in a confident way. Capture those good feelings and make them stronger and stronger as you hold the picture of the confident you in your mind. 3. Don’t people please Ultimately it’s our fear of the way others see us that knocks our confidence. Let go of the need to feel liked and you will be more relaxed and confident. Remember, it’s impossible to please everyone all the time! 4. Step outside your comfort zone Top sports coaches encourage their athletes to experience things they haven’t tried before. By stepping outside their comfort zone, it enables them to cope with pressure in their sport. Expanding your comfort zone doesn’t mean you have to do an extreme sport. Start with something as simple as ordering something new from the takeaway menu, or chatting to a stranger. Contact e-mail: steve@thinkeasy.co.uk
The Burpee
Great for: arms, chest, back and legs Place two Kettlebells with handles at the 12 o’clock position then get into an elevated press up with the feet in a ridged plank starting position. Jump in with both feet, landing with heels down and knees bent between the Kettlebells. Now perform a Dead Lift to the upright position with the arms straight, chest up, shoulders back. Bending the knees, put the Kettlebells down and repeat.
TREAT YOURSELF Why not splash out before the big day with a new aftershave or maybe you are after a great pressie for your best man? Here are a couple of our favourites. Gucci Guilty: A seriously seductive cocktail of orange blossom and woody accords of cedar and patchouli, pefect for a wild celebratory party.

Y B D L I W GO ! T S A O C E TH What TYF offers TYF is a unique, family run company which offers surfing, coasteering, climbing and kayaking among many other activities - perfect for a lively stag weekend. After a fun day with your mates, chill out with a beer in one of four recently acquired bell tents. These tents come with a therm-a-rest double mattress and solar lighting. TYF have capacity for groups of up to 24 people to camp in 4 bell tents, or up to 40 people in smaller 3 man tents on a campsite just minutes from the activity locations and a short walk in to town. Larger groups could also choose to stay at the nearby Celtic Camping which offers comfortable bunks in a spacious campsite in beautiful surroundings. (find out more at www.celtic-camping.co.uk).
Taking the plunge
To celebrateTYF’s 25th anniversary, Brides Etc were thrilled to be invited to test the place for ourselves, and who better to pack off to Pembrokeshire than country girl Kat, our Editorial Assistant and her adrenalin junkie partner Simon… Kat says: I’ve been to St David’s numerous times in my life, my family has spent holidays there since the 60’s, so I’d known about TYF for a while. When I was offered the chance to go I reckoned I could get Simon to do all the crazy activities while I stood by taking pictures - no such luck! Somehow I found myself getting kitted out in a wetsuit, safety helmet and buoyancy aid and agreeing to jump off cliffs into the sea! Simon thought this thing, called “Coasteering”, sounded awesome, but I must admit, at first I was slightly nervous. Simon and I, in a group of six, first took a short walk down to the coastline in glorious sunshine and after the necessary safety talks from our guides we climbed down the cliff and got ready to take our first plunge. Incredibly I loved it! I was expecting the water to be freezing, but luckily my wetsuit kept me nice and toasty. Out in the middle of the sea I realised what I had done and I couldn’t stop grinning! The group then swam out to sea a bit, scrambled over some rocks and climbed back up the rocks ready for our next jump. For two and a half hours we swam, climbed and jumped our way around the coastline – fantastic! The guides were really friendly and there was no pressure to do the high jumps, but amazingly I wanted to. Nearing the end of the session we walked back up the cliff and headed to another spot. Here we swam out to a small rock formation, climbed to the end and …suddenly, out of nowhere, a massive wave grabbed us and pulled us into what looked like a whirlpool, spitting us back out seconds later. We were left gently bobbing in the sea wondering where all that water had gone. “Can I do that again please?” I begged. And I did. About ten times.

If you’re looking for a stag weekend with a difference, something that will be truly memorable for you and your mates, then head to TYF, an outdoor adventure company based in St David’s, Pembrokeshire. With tons of activities to try and cool tents to sink a beer in at the end of the day, you’re guaranteed to come away feeling refreshed and exhilarated…
Top Tip Bring your swim stuff to wear under your wetsuit, a towel, sun cream, and some trainers you are happy to wade through the sea in (no worries if you don’t have any as they can be provided).
Simon says: ‘Coasteering is invigorating and a real challenge which leaves you feeling pretty good about yourself at the end of it. If you’re looking for a stag weekend in a great setting to try something you haven’t done before then this is the sport for you. Your mates will thank you for not making them go paint-balling or go-karting again! And after all the action, St David’s has some great pubs and restaurants so there is no reason for you to not have a good drinking session while you’re here. Coasteering is a great hangover cure (so we hear), so you have no excuse not to make the most of it.
We recommend... The TYF Spirit of Adventure Break A relaxing weekend (leaving plenty of drinking and chilling out time), taking in two half-day activities over the weekend. You can choose any two of TYF’s four core activities -coasteering, kayaking, surfing or climbing. TYF can of course design an adventure weekend package just for you, arranging accommodation and activities to suit your specific needs.

Time for
Following the hype of the British Open last month at Sandwich, our designer and golf novice, Grant, decided to hit the greens at Hanbury Manor to find out more about this well known course and hone his skills. Golf may have, up until recently, been thought of as the sport for the older upper-class gent. But with celebs such as Robbie Williams, George Clooney, and ex-footballer Jamie Redknapp taking part regularly, and more clubs allowing non-members to play, it really is accessible to anyone. It’s the perfect way to relax after the weekly grind, has a fantastic social side in the club house and would be an ideal way to spend some time with your dad, future father in-law, and mates before tying the knot. After all, the girls are bound to be hitting the spa so it is only right you should get a treat too!At my taster at the picturesque Hanbury Manor in Hertfordshire, I was one of three other novices who were given tuition before hitting the course for a friendly game. It was challenging and although I didn’t manage to hit many pars, I did seriously enjoy it, so much in fact that I’ve taken to playing a few more games. The kit has been dusted down and made ready for action!

Club House Rules: Although a lot of clubs offer rounds to non-members, (green fee players) it’s important to remember that not all do. Check with the club what the admission policy is, you may need to go with someone who is already a member. Most clubs will have a dress code: shirts must have collars, golf shoes worn on the course, smart shoes in the club house, and jeans will certainly not be permissible on the course or even the club house. Ask the club what you are expected to wear and whether they offer shoe hire. Sharing clubs is never allowed, but most courses will do club hire at a reasonable rate and even buggy hire if you don’t fancy the walk!

WIN
A PERSONAL WINE TASTING SESSION WITH CHANNEL 4 STAR EWAN LACEY
The reception is sorted, the menu agreed. All that’s left is to choose the wine. What a great opportunity for you to impress the guests! But where do you start? Do you go for something safe that you’ve heard of, or do a little exploring and find something amazing? Wine expert Ewan Lacey gives you his top tips and the chance for you to meet him in person to sample some of his favourite tipples …
EWAN’S TIPS
Learning about wine gives you the confidence to trust in your taste. It needn’t stop at the wedding day either – this delicious subject could become a shared interest throughout a long and happy marriage.
Tip 1
A course is the perfect place to learn about wine. Choose one that’s fun. It should be a day out, not a return to the classroom!
Ewan’s rising stars
A few years ago, Austrian wines walked away with all the prizes when compared with top French wines. They are superb when served on their own and delicious with food. Linn and Charlotte from Merry Widows Wines have won too many awards to mention, but here are three which will add a touch of class to your big day: White: MW Wines, Muscat Ottonel, Austria (IWC Silver Medal Winner) A great, refreshing wine for serving with canapés. Rosé: MW Wines, Pinot Noir, Austria The most popular wine of the summer, its easy style means that it suits both red and white wine fans.
Tip 2
Wine comes into its own when it’s paired with good food. At my courses, celebrity chef Loretta Liu prepares fresh, savoury macaroons. The combination of a cool, dry MW Wines Muscat paired with a goat’s cheese and fennel macaroon is so delicious it will leave you speechless!
Red: MW Wines, Zweigelt, Austria A fruity, juicy, flexible wine - a great choice to share with the father-in-law by the fireside when the nights start to draw in.
Tip 3
All of the above wines are available from www.merrywidowswine.com/Wines
Learn about well-known wines but also the rising stars. The huge advantage of finding out about up and coming wines before everyone else is that you get top quality wine at great prices.
Tip 4
Armed with your new found knowledge, ask your venue for a wine tasting. If you’re not happy with the wines they offer, bring your own! Most places allow you to do this as long as you pay the ‘corkage’ charge – a great way to get the most for your money.
COMPETITION
For your chance to win a tailor-made wine tasting with Ewan Lacey (www.ewanlacey.com) simply e-mail julie@groomsetc.co.uk with your name and the date of your wedding.

ABOUT EWAN Ewan Lacey is a wine writer and the wine expert on Channel 4’s The Cookery School. Ewan’s interest in the drinks business started in his teens when he dabbled in making his own beer. This, however, was put to an end when his home brew kit exploded all over his wardrobe! While studying for his law degree, Ewan worked in restaurants and bars all over the world, including a cocktail bar in Copenhagen where he invented new takes on classic drinks. Moving from Scotland to London Ewan ran restaurants in the West End. His interest in wine deepened and he became a consultant wine buyer, developing wine lists and training sommeliers for some of London’s top restaurants and hotels. Ewan hosts wine courses and has designed a range of wine tasting events tailored to make any occasion special. He loves working with top celebrity chefs, designing and delivering great food and wine matching events and hosting themed dinners.
