Hi Girls, It’s hard to believe that we are well into a new year – and a new decade! We do hope that 2011 is turning out to be a good one for you and that you will enjoy taking some time out and relaxing with our latest February/March issue. And what a special two months we are covering! On February 14th we celebrate St Valentine’s Day. A time, of course, to get romantic and indulge in some special one-on-one time with your loved one. Many of you may have experienced a proposal on this most special of days and are now looking forward to the wedding preparations that have followed, but that’s no excuse for you (or him!) to make this year any less dreamy. That’s why we are featuring some Cupid-flavoured features in this issue. From gorgeous, classy lingerie to thrill and excite (p25) to a make-up special on creating kissable lips (p31) and a round up of lovely Valentine’s pressies which you may want to leave out as a hint! (p77). We haven’t left your groom-to-be out either. On p73 and 74 we feature dinner suits and accessories which would put James Bond to shame, and if your beloved hasn’t yet chosen your engagement ring, perhaps he will get some inspiration from jeweller Michael Frank who stars in our behind the scenes feature (p57). Moving on we praise that very special lady in everyone’s life with features to celebrate and plan Mother’s Day. From Mother of the Bride fashion (p16) to a collection of gifts to surprise and delight (p29) and girly pamper packages for you both to share (p37). Of course we haven’t scrimped on our usual fabulous regulars. Indulge in two real life weddings; get inspiration for magical venues and fantastic fashions and choose the perfect photographer for your big day. All this, plus the opportunity to win a holiday in amazing Andorra. Until the next issue

Edenexposed specialise in powerfully epic, conceptual photos that are totally unique and visually stunning. Trash The Dress Photography sessions can be done at any time after your wedding day, or make superb gifts for modern, open minded couples. Visit www.edenexposed.com for examples of a Trash The Dress photo shoot. For any bookings or inquiries please e-mail Sacha Bloor at: info@edenexposed.com

Take a chance on me… As a single woman in her 40s I’d accepted that Mr Right probably wasn’t out there and was quite happily getting on with my life running my china hire business (www.meoldchina.co.uk) when a colleague at work convinced me to try internet dating. At first I wasn’t sure, but then I thought: ‘What have I got to lose?’ So I filled in my profile and began looking through what seemed like hundreds of available men, none of whom caught my eye until I saw Steve. His smile was amazing, and as I read his profile I discovered that, like me, he had a love of animals, adored his family and was looking for a woman who would ‘take his breath away’. I sent Steve an e-mail in January 2010 and was very surprised to get a reply almost straight away. He said that my message had made him laugh and that he was curious about me, despite not seeing a photo. After a week of chatting we decided to meet. Our first date was scuppered by heavy snow, so we re-arranged, but when we arrived at the restaurant it was closed for refurbishment! We found somewhere else to go and the evening was fantastic. I wrote in my diary that evening.... ‘I think I have just met the man I am going to spend the rest of my life with’.

The proposal... Three weeks after meeting, Steve and I went for dinner in Suffolk. As with all our

previous dates, we laughed, talked and felt really comfortable with each other. Halfway through the meal, Steve got up from his chair, dropped to one knee and asked me to marry him! To say I was surprised was an understatement, but I had no hesitation saying yes. Steve hadn’t had time to get an engagement ring, so he asked if I would accept a temporary ring - one that his mum had given his dad 60 years earlier and had both their initials engraved inside. As I reached for the ring, I accidentally knocked it out of Steve’s hand and it went flying across the restaurant! Poor Steve was on his hands and knees under a table of four people, retrieving it!

My knight in shining armour… Steve and I spent our engagement night together in Suffolk and returned to my house in Essex the next day, but when I opened the front door - disaster! A pipe had burst and there was water everywhere. Steve took control and moved me into his mum and dad’s home where I remained for seven months, which is how long the house took to dry out and be repaired. I lost absolutely everything in that flood, but at least it meant that Steve and I got to chose new furniture and paint the rooms in colours we both liked, which meant that when we eventually moved in together, Steve already felt like it was his home too.

Planning the big day... perfectly Vintage As my company supplies vintage china for weddings and events, I just knew that the theme of my dream wedding had to be vintage. I’d helped organise over 200 weddings in my previous job as an Events Manager, so I knew exactly who to contact to make the day perfect. In fact, I had everything planned within a week of the proposal! We chose The Reid Rooms as our venue as we were able to chose our own caterers and provide our own drinks. Steve is one of six children and his family is quite large, but we managed to keep the numbers to 70, and every single guest was there because they were special to us both. I can honestly say that I really didn’t get stressed at all, except when I went for my dress fitting and found it was too small - too many delicious dinners at Steve’s mum’s! Having to find another dress within two weeks could have been a nightmare, but I much preferred my second dress which I found at The Dressing Room in Witham. Fitted, with a gorgeous lace overlay and decorated with tiny pearls and sequins which sparkled as I walked, it was perfect. I teamed it with a headdress I’d made from vintage diamante brooches, plus a birdcage veil and a pair of gold peep toe shoes found in a charity shop and decorated with diamante brooches not bad for £12!

The bid day dawns... A mid-September wedding was a risk, weather wise, but our big day was glorious. First thing in the morning Mum and I set up my china ready for afternoon tea. The tables were covered with vintage white lace table cloths and dressed with soft pink and lilac roses, which gave a country feel when displayed with hurricane lamps, bird cages and cream lanterns. I chose large dinner plates as charger plates, with smaller dessert plates on top, tea cups and saucers, tiny cake forks and knives and crystal glass wear which sparkled in the light. Tina from Karleys Covers supplied the chair covers which were finished with lace bows and diamante clasps. It all looked amazing! Then I went to get ready in the farmhouse adjacent to The Reid Rooms. I wasn’t nervous at all, in fact I couldn’t wait! Photographer Neil Bailey was on hand to capture all the special moments. I’d worked with Neil many times and he was an obvious choice for me as he’s always produced fantastic results without lots of fuss. Steve and I had decided to walk into the ceremony together, and as we had to visit the registrar first, he was the first person to see me in my dress, other than my Mum and sister Hannah, which was lovely. He said I looked stunning and I must say I felt like a million dollars. Steve looked gorgeous too; his dark grey tails from Coes in Ipswich made him look like he had stepped out of a period drama. His sage green waistcoat and cravat made his eyes look even bluer than usual, and I can honestly say that I never felt as much love for someone as I did when I saw him that day.

A wonderful day... Steve and I took our vows in The Granary, which is a beautiful room. We walked in, hand in hand, to a Carpenters track and walked out to Barry White’s, ‘My First, My Last, My Everything’. We didn’t have bridesmaids or page boys, but my sister Hannah did a lovely reading. After the ceremony everyone adjourned for afternoon tea which included fresh scones with clotted cream and jam, served on vintage three tier cake stands. Our friend and Chef Chris Jagger did a fabulous job, and his chocolate dipped strawberries were a real hit! Tea and coffee was served in delicate tea cups and wine was generously provided by our friends Jon and Sue. Halfway through the afternoon our ‘Russian’ waiters broke into song, much to the delight of the guests, who were surprised to learn that the waiters weren’t Russian at all, but part of ‘Changing faces’ who provided fabulous entertainment, serenading the ladies and getting the guests playing musical instruments and singing along. They were hilarious! At one stage an extra band member was introduced as Steve treated everyone to a rendition of Amazing Grace on the blues harmonica, a tribute to my Grandfather which brought tears to my eyes. Speeches followed from Steve’s twin brother Richard and Steve himself, who surprised me by reading out the first ever message I sent him on the dating site. I couldn’t let the moment pass without thanking Steve’s parents for making me feel so welcome and for taking me in when I had only met them once! And for the support my own family and friends had given me over the years, especially my mum. In the early evening Steve and I cut our cake. Steve’s mum had made it and it was easily the best cake I’d ever seen! Our first dance was to Michael Buble’s ‘Hold On’, sung by Ian Gallagher from ‘Classic Sinatra’. Between sets from Ian we had a vintage style Juke Box instead of a disco, so guests were able to choose their own tunes to dance to. The

buffet came courtesy of Dwayne from the Aussie BBQ Company who provided a delicious hog roast. Reluctantly the evening had to come to an end and Steve and I said goodbye to our guests and walked to the nearby Farm House for our first night as man and wife.

A wonderful beginning to a new life... The next morning, still buzzing with happiness, Steve and I jetted off to the Maldives for a wonderful two week honeymoon. It was a fantastic start to married life and a time neither of us will ever forget. Thank goodness I signed up for that dating site or I may never have met the man who has brought so much happiness into my life.

Make-up

ask the experts:

Pucker up with confidence this Valentine’s Day as Kirsty from Bespoke Makeovers shows you how to overcome your lip problems and create the perfect pout! Q My lips are always so dry so my lipstick looks awful. Help! A Dry, chapped lips not only look awful, they make a mess of lipstick application too. Avoid this by applying lip balm daily, several times a day. Once you get into the habit of moisturising your lips, it will become as normal as moisturising your face. Hunt down your favourite balm, buy a few tubes and keep in your purse, your desk drawer, in your handbag and by your bed. The more ready access you have to the product, the more likely you’ll be to use it. First though, you need to get your lips into condition. So using your balm, try to lightly exfoliate your lips. You can do this by buying a baby toothbrush. Rub the toothbrush over your lips in a light circular movement scrubbing at the dry skin. This will help remove dry skin and naturally plump out your lips. Good luck!

Q I have thin lips. How can I make them look bigger? A Big, beautiful lips have always been a symbol of sexiness, but not all of us are lucky enough to be born with them. To make your pout look fuller, you could try one of the lip plumper products on the market which swells the lips for a number of hours. These products may tingle, but they’re not painful. Another easy method to create the illusion of bigger lips is by using make-up. First, line the outer rim of your lips with a natural lip pencil, staying within the natural border of your lips unless your top lip is very thin, in this case make sure you have applied foundation and powder on and around your lips. Then, taking a natural colour lip pencil correct your thin lip by drawing very carefully just above your natural lip line. This will reform the top lip line. Now apply a lip primer before you fill in your lips with a light layer of lip pencil then pick up your lipstick or gloss. Light coloured lipsticks work best (dark colours tend to make your lips appear smaller). Using a lip brush fill your lips with your favourite colour. Now add even more definition by dabbing a lighter shade to the centre of your bottom lip like a light reflective pearly pink gloss.

SUPPORT CLINIQUES ‘KISS IT BETTER’ APPEAL

For the fourth year running, Clinique is supporting the Great Ormond Street Hospital’s KISS IT BETTER Appeal which raises money to fund research into the causes and treatment of childhood cancer. Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children opened its doors on Valentine’s Day 1852, and to celebrate the hospital's birthday and raise funds for the Appeal, Clinique has created a special NEW Limited Edition Smoothie Kisses Lip Gloss Set featuring four Vitamin C Lip Smoothie glosses, all housed in a brightly coloured pink bag. The set will be sold exclusively in House of Fraser stores during February, with £4 going to the KISS IT BETTER Appeal (£2 from Clinique – www.clinique.co.uk and £2 from House of Fraser - www.houseoffraser.co.uk). For further information on the KISS IT BETTER Appeal and ways to donate, visit www.gosh.org/kissitbetter

TIPS FOR LOVELY LIPS Take a water bottle with you wherever you go. Drinking enough water will keep the body, skin and lips hydrated. Licking your lips damages the protective barrier, which can dry out the lips, so try to avoid this. Instead, regularly apply lip balm. Plug in a humidifier. It can replace moisture in dry indoor air, keeping your lips (and your skin) hydrated.

Q How do I make my lipstick stick?! A Making your lipstick last all night is down to good make-up application. A trick is to powder your lips before applying lip colour or liner. So use foundation first and then a little loose powder, you can use a powder brush to cover the lip area. Go easy as this will make your lips feel dry. Alternatively, work with a lip primer. This product is also designed to be worn under your lip liner and lipstick. It looks after your lips, smoothing and filling them out. It works very much like a foundation would for you, helping your lipstick to last longer. Doing either of these can give your gloss or lip colour some thing more to hold on to. Line your lips fully then apply your lipstick or gloss using a lip brush. Look around, there are lots of lovely lipsticks and lip glosses on the market with extra staying power…

Hair

ask the experts:

Whatever your wedding day hair worries, our resident expert Sara Marshall from Occassions Hairdressing has the answer… Q Hi Sara, I suffer really badly from split ends. What causes them and how can I prevent them? A There are a wide range of reasons why split ends occur: 1. Excessive use of hot styling tools (irons, hot curlers, blow dryers, hot combs). 2. Overuse of chemical treatments (relaxers, perms, hair colours). 3. Use of inferior styling tools that rip or snag the hair (cheap synthetic brushes or combs, brush rollers, etc). 4. Environmental damage from heat, cold, wind and other climate issues. 5. Lack of routine maintenance such as regular trimming. 6. Improper detangling techniques. 7. Over washing. 8. Use of inferior hair care products. 9. Excessive use of styling products such as gels, waxes and sprays. 10. Trimming ends with inferior or dull scissors. The only way to get rid of split ends permanently is to cut them off. Serums can temporarily seal a split end, but they can’t repair them, and if left they will split up the hair shaft causing even more damage. Conditioners and hair oils will temporarily ‘glue’ them back together, but none are permanent repairers. However, I would recommend you use products to keep further split ends at bay. My favourite range is Moroccan Oil, who have created shampoos, conditioners and oil. The oil can be used on wet or dry hair and is a wonderful strengthener as it coats your hair in Keratin. If you try to avoid the things that cause split ends, use Moroccan Oil or a similar product and get your hair trimmed on average every six to eight weeks, then in the future you should be able to prevent split ends all together.

Q

Hi Sara, someone told me that perms are making a comeback. Is it true and how are they different from those awful ‘80s bubble curls? A Divas, the 80's Poodle perms are out and soft loose curls are in! In fact, new perms are the hot waves for 2011. They can give your hair lots of volume, thus transforming your style into super soft curls with lots of movement and texture. Every girl wants sexy hair, so the new perms are all about losing the old frizz and welcoming the wave. New perms are said to be better and a lot more versatile than perms of the past. So if perms are for you, make sure you find a stylist fully trained in the art.

Q What’s the best way to get some shine into my dull hair? A We all want hair that looks good and feels great, and the old ways are always the best! A good old fashioned wash and conditioning treatment will really help your hair with natural lustre. Just think about it. We all know the benefits of cleansing, toning and moisturising our faces. Just like having a facial we can be left feeling super soft and, yes shiny! So your hair needs the same attention. Start out with your first wash to cleanse and a second to tone and add moisture. Only add conditioner to mid lengths and ends. When washing your hair always give it a good brush first, wash with warm, not hot water and when you are ready to rinse, make sure the water is a little cooler. Doing this will allow the hair shaft cuticles to close naturally, thus allowing light to reflect from the closed cuticle creating natural shine. Pictured below is the Body Shop's lovely range of products for creating shiny hair (www.bodyshop.co.uk). Try this as an alternative to Moroccan Oil.

Kent Life - for the time of your life Kent Life Checklist

Civil licence: Yes Capacity for sit down meal: 100 Accommodation: No

Looking for a wedding venue that is unique and steeped in traditional history? Then look no further than Kent Life. Set in 28 beautiful acres, Kent Life is home to gardens, orchards and unique period buildings including a Victorian farmhouse; WWII cottage; a1950’s home; an original village hall; chapel; oast houses and a hop garden. One of only a few remaining places in Britain where hops are grown, harvested, dried and packed by hand, Kent Life is also a traditional heritage farm attraction with a wonderful farmyard and friendly animals. To amuse your younger guests there is a ‘Cuddle Corner’, an outdoor adventure play area and an indoor soft play barn, while guests of all ages will love exploring the herb garden; wedding orchard; love seat; hop garden and stunning buildings, all of which make perfect photography settings.

A day to remember... Your Kent Life wedding ceremony will be held in Ulcombe Village Hall, an authentic village hall situated within the grounds and licensed to hold Civil Marriage and Partnership Ceremonies accommodating up to 100 guests. The Village Hall is a ‘blank canvas’ which can be decorated to the bride and groom’s taste. Once married you and your guests will spill out onto the ‘Village Green’ where waitresses will serve celebration drinks and canapés. The Village Hall is also the perfect place for an evening reception for up to 200 guests. There is ample room for a band and disco, a large dance floor and great acoustics. The Village Hall has a licensed bar serving wine, spirits, draught and bottled beer, all at pub prices.

To have and to hold... Wedding breakfasts at Kent Life are held in the splendid Kentish Wagon Store, complete with timber beams decorated with traditional dried hops. The Wagon Store is a delightful room, bathed in natural light which can accommodate up to 100 guests. There is a sound system available to play your own background music or the venue can supply music for you.

During your evening entertainment in the Village Hall, a buffet will be set up in The Wagon Store which is also a good place for people to chat if they want a break from dancing! Food is supplied by experienced Chef David McInnes and his wife Joanne, backed up by a team of dedicated staff who will work with you to produce your perfect menu using only the freshest local ingredients.

A dedicated service Wedding services at Kent Life are provided by Zest Creative Catering. The team at Zest know that organising a wedding can be a daunting task and with this in mind their experienced wedding co-ordinator will assist you with your preparations, guiding you through the planning of every detail to enable you to sit back, relax and enjoy your special day. On the big day itself a member of Zest’s team will welcome you to Kent Life and be on hand to oversee your entire day, assisted by an informal Toastmaster who will guide your guests effortlessly through all the formalities. The wedding team will book your wedding ceremony on your behalf, all you need to do is select the date and time you wish to get married. You can be married seven days a week between 9am and 5pm. A pack containing everything you need to know for the ceremony will be sent by the Maidstone Registry Team once they have received the initial paperwork from the wedding team. There will be a charge made to you by the registry office to perform a marriage ceremony at Kent Life. However the venue do not charge extra for you to be married on site. Though Kent Life does not have accommodation, there are good hotels very close by which the venue can recommend to you.

This Ring

with

Mike Stapleton and Amanda Gray, owners of Michael Frank jewellers, tell us more about their family run business which brings the glamour of London’s Hatton Garden to Essex … Have styles changed much over the years? Amanda: We’ve seen many changes over the years and fashions come and go. Currently brides and grooms tend to want white metals such as white gold, platinum or palladium rather than yellow gold. Diamond set wedding bands are currently very popular.’

Hi Mike and Amanda, tell us a bit about yourselves and your company… Mike: ‘My family have been in the jewellery trade for the last 40 years, so when I retired from the Army in 2001 it seemed like the obvious career choice. Amanda and I are engaged and due to get married in September. We have four children, Michael and Frankie who the company is named after and Emily and Maisy.’ Amanda: ‘We specialise in fantastic bespoke engagement, wedding, commitment and eternity rings crafted with superior workmanship and passion and are currently designing our own range of rings which we will name after our daughters. We offer fantastic customer care and before and after sales support. We work within people’s budgets but also have financial packages available to help spread the cost of payment. Our clients can be assured of receiving a high level of professional service whether having a consultation at our Wickford showroom or in the comfort of their own home.’ What’s the best thing about your job? Mike: ‘I enjoy what I do and I’m passionate about jewellery and seeing our clients happy. It’s wonderful watching people’s faces when they see the finished product and knowing that you have had a part to play in their wedding.’ Amanda: ‘I love working with Mike; his enthusiasm and desire to help people achieve their dream wedding or engagement ring is infectious. We are a brilliant team and have a fantastic group of people working with us. Both Mike and I love attending wedding fayres and meeting brides and grooms personally. We’ve met some wonderful people and even been invited to one or two of their weddings!’

What advice do you give would-be grooms to be when choosing a ring? Mike: ‘Every client who has a private consultation with Michael Frank is given expert advice from either myself, Amanda or our team of wedding ring experts. We ensure that all their requirements are met and we work within people’s budgets and give every option open to them. We often provide loose diamonds for clients’ engagement rings and will help clients understand the characteristics of a diamond to help them choose the best stone.’ What, on average, do men spend on a ring? Mike: ‘The average spend is £2000 on an engagement ring; £1000 on a ladies’ wedding ring and £500 on a gents’ wedding ring.’ Are there any funny/romantic stories that spring to mind? Amanda: ‘We were approached by a couple who had been let down by another jeweller and they needed their wedding rings made within a week. The rings were complex designs but not wanting to let the couple down we agreed to make them. The groom gave us the wrong date of his wedding (which we didn’t know at the time). We’d agreed with the groom that we would deliver the rings on the Saturday morning ready for his wedding on the Sunday. We turned up at 9.30am on the Saturday morning to find a very worried and pale-faced groom pacing up and down….as he was getting married an hour later! Thankfully he got married, with his wedding rings, and his wife was none the wiser….we got invited to that wedding as well! The moral of that story is: give yourself plenty of time to look for your wedding rings and please give us the correct dates for your wedding!’

Is Valentines the busiest time of year for you? Amanda: ‘Yes it is, alongside Christmas. This is due to the fact that we are a Fine Jewellers and provide clients with a comprehensive selection of jewellery in silver, gold and Platinum. We also stock watches, a wide range such as DKNY, Fossil, and Diesel.’ What’s your best seller, ring wise? Mike: ‘Our best selling engagement is a single stone brilliant cut diamond ring in a Tiffany style setting. Set in either platinum or 18ct white gold. Our best selling wedding ring for ladies is a brilliant cut diamond full eternity ring set in either platinum or 18ct white gold. Our best selling wedding ring for men is a 6mm palladium band with a brushed centre with high polished edges.’

Evergreen Love

Bride: Kayleigh O’Donnell, 25 Groom: Andy Davies, 28 Home: Ashford, Kent Venue: Port Lympne Wild Animal Park Date: 4th September, 2010

A one-off remark about a famous pop star led Kayleigh into the arms of her future husband…

|

pg 59

My looky-likey love… ‘It was February 2004 and my friend and I were sat in her house watching the TV and getting ready to go out. ‘Oh I love him!’ I said as Will Young came on screen, singing his song Evergreen. ‘My friend Andy looks just like him’ she replied, joking that she should call him and get him to come and give us a lift to the M20 nightclub in Ashford where we were planning to go. To my surprise Andy said yes and we all jumped into his car. Andy did indeed bear a passing resemblance to Will, and he was a really lovely guy too and that night we formed a real connection and started dating. Our relationship was very intense to start with, maybe too intense for us at such a young age, as two years later we decided to go our separate ways. Neither of us really forgot each other in the year we were apart though, and when we got back together, the relationship was even better the second time around. It took the loss of my beloved step-mum during this time to make me take stock of my life and realise just how special Andy was. He was so supportive and caring during this tough time and I wasn’t about to let him go again!

The proposal... ‘By 2008 Andy and I were talking about getting married. We’re a very traditional couple and both still lived at home and were very keen to make our relationship official before moving in together. We’d

even chosen a beautiful engagement ring together – a square cut diamond on an 18ct white gold band. Andy had always said he would propose ‘When the time was right’ so I knew he would ask me one day. However, when the time came, it was still a huge shock. We were on holiday in Portugal in July 2008 and had gone for a walk along the beach after dinner. As we reached the end of the pier we stopped and looked out at the coastline and the starry sky. Suddenly Andy wasn’t there! At first I panicked and thought he’d fallen into the sea, but then I heard his voice: ‘Kayleigh Marie O’Donnell, will you marry me?’ He had gone down on one knee. I laughed to hear him say my full name, but of course I was thrilled and said yes immediately. Unbeknown to me, Andy had asked my dad Peter for his permission before popping the question, so we returned to huge smiles from mine and Andy’s family and a lovely family meal to celebrate.

Planning ahead… ‘As I have a big family – four sisters and three brothers – and Andy’s family are church-goers, we knew we wanted a large, traditional Saturday wedding, and that meant we had to start saving. Though we were lucky that both our families helped financially, weddings are very expensive, so we decided on 2010 for the ceremony. First we met with our local Vicar, the Rev John McKenzie, and booked the ceremony for September 4th

at his church, St Mary’s in Willesborough. Next we had to find the venue. Our first choice, unbelievably, was already full every weekend throughout our chosen year! After visiting lots of different locations we finally went to The Mansion House at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park and fell in love with it. The location was fabulous, the room was beautiful with amazing murals on the walls, and it was within budget. Best of all, because we would be having lots of children at the wedding, a safari tour was included within the price which meant our younger guests could go off and look at the animals in safety while the adults could mingle.

Dressing to impress ‘Unlike the venue, I found my dream dress straight away. I’d only gone for a look around if I’m honest, but when I saw the gown at a shop called Confetti and Lace at Lakeside shopping centre, I knew I had to have it. With its ivory colour, fitted bodice and train with delicate beading, it was an almost perfect fit. For my bridesmaids, old friends Lucy Rycroft and Charlie Beresford, I chose long, strapless aubergine gowns with sweetheart necklines. My little sister Eloise, eight, was a flower girl and she wore a mini version of my dress. Andy chose his older brother Steven as his best man and his two other brothers, Daniel and Jonathan, along with my brother Jason, as ushers. They all wore charcoal

grey tails from Tiara and Tails in Mersham-le-hatch. My nephew Charlie Mortimer was my pageboy and his outfit matched Andy's. My bouquet and flowers matched the aubergine theme – white and cream roses with purple Carla lilies, all beautifully put together by Debra Jackson at The Flower Barn in Sellindge.

Goodbye to my single life... ‘A few weeks before the wedding I had my hen weekend in London. On the first day I stayed in a friend’s flat and all my girlfriends joined me for a ‘movie night’ with champagne and popcorn – it was great fun. The next day I had a surprise treat – cocktail making lessons with the girls – before we set off on a party bus dressed in burlesque costumes to meet Andy’s mum Anne and more of my female relatives for a wonderful dinner.

Welcome Mrs Davies... ‘The night before the wedding, myself and my bridesmaids stayed at the Ashford International Hotel. I wasn’t at all nervous about the ceremony next day, just determined not to be late. I’d promised Andy I wouldn’t make him wait an hour like a friend of ours had made her groom wait, so I got an early night and was up bright and early to have my make-up done by a lovely girl from Ladies’ Touch and my hair styled by my cousin Michelle Carey. My dad Peter, who was giving me away and Eloise, turned up mid morning ready to head to the church in a beautiful Rolls Royce Silver Cloud hired from Cars4weddings.

dance had to be to Will Young’s Evergreen. Since we had let people into the secret of our first meeting by having a little ‘How well do you know Andy and Kayleigh?’ quiz during the afternoon, the whole room fell about, laughing and cheering.

A new life begins… It was sad when the reception came to an end at Midnight because we’d had such a wonderful time, but at least we got to have breakfast at the hotel the next morning with lots of our guests who had stayed there too. Andy and I spent a second night in the Bridal Suite before jetting off to Kenya on safari for our honeymoon – pretty apt considering the location of our reception! Our wonderful day now seems like such a long time ago, but life is getting better and better. Andy and I have just bought our first house so instead of planning a wedding I’m planning on renovating and decorating! Who knows, I may put a picture of Will Young on my fridge, just to remind me of how I found the love of my life!

Love, honour and obey ‘It only took ten minutes from the hotel to the church and as I sat with dad I was so excited! As I’m a police officer I don’t usually show emotion in public, but I couldn’t stop smiling – and I wasn’t late! The church was full of my family who live all over the country and had got together for my special day so it was brilliant. Dad and I walked down the aisle to traditional church organ music and as I saw Andy at the altar I just beamed. It wasn’t until my Auntie Kay did a reading that I shed a little tear – I tried not to cry because I look like Princess Fiona from Shrek when I do and I didn’t want to ruin my gorgeous make-up, but I couldn’t help myself. The vows Andy and I took were very traditional – I promised to love, honour and obey – but there was a little addition to the ceremony when Andy and I lit a candle each signifying our single lives, then a third to signify our lives together. We kept this burning throughout the reception which was lovely. All the while our photographer John Marsh was taking photos. He was brilliant and so unobtrusive that half the time I wondered if he had gone home because he was so subtle – the sign of a great wedding photographer.

Food for thought… ‘The reception at Port Lympne Manor House was great. They have a permanent marquee on the side where the staff served the choice of a Bride’s menu – pork followed by cheesecake; or a Groom’s menu – duck followed by profiteroles, co-ordinated to perfection by wedding planner Honey Jackson. Our cake was a collection of vanilla, lemon and chocolate cupcakes with a tier of sponge cake, designed by Cakes Galore. After the meal Beejay DJ began the evening entertainment and of course our first

Over the next few pages Brides Etc showcase inspiring and beautiful wedding images from some of our favourite photographers, while Gavin Woollard gives us some tips on how to choose the right expert for your big day…

GAVIN WOOLLARD www.reportagephotography.com Areas covered: Essex, London and the UK Specialising in: beautiful weddings and relaxed portraiture Distinctions: 23 years experience as a professional wedding photographer and 15 years as a member of the official portrait team for investitures at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. Hi Gavin, how do we choose the right photographer for our wedding? ‘First I would suggest looking at the website, and if you like what you see, making an appointment to see the photographer to look at their albums. It’s very important that you get to know and like the person and their style and that you know what you want too.

It’s silly to ask someone who specialises in very traditional shots to provide natural or candid shots, and vice versa. It’s also crucial that you have a good chemistry and that you will feel happy and relaxed with your chosen person. Remember, you call the tune. It’s your day and your agenda. Just communicate so both parties know what they need to achieve.’ Are qualifications important? ‘Well, you wouldn’t let an unqualified driver drive you to the church! There are so many photographers out there! (everyone who owns a digital camera now thinks they are a wedding photographer - so research carefully as the same names will keep appearing'). ‘Then listen to your friends and friends of friends. There’s nothing better, if you can’t decide, than a word of mouth recommendation.’

The Mirage Nehru Suits in black or white are ideal for an evening function, or wedding day. The Suits offer an alternative that is modern and great to wear. Whether you opt for black or white, you can be assured that choosing accessories will not be a problem.

Buckingham Cream Prince Edward Suit This option features a cream Edward jacket and trousers, plus optional waistcoat.

Why Coes?

A helping hand

With over 80 year’s experience of dressing men and boys for special occasions, Coes has a well deserved reputation as a leading supplier of formal wear. From the stylish dinner suits featured here to exclusive wedding attire, fancy waistcoats and accessories (featured over the page), Coes stock everything that a Groom could require to complete his wardrobe. Added to the huge range of exclusive and constantly updated stock on offer is an award-winning standard of customer service and quality.

Choosing a dinner suit or a wedding outfit can be tricky and that’s where Coes fully trained staff really come into their own. Unlike many hire businesses, Coes employ people whose only function is to deal with formalwear hire. Customers are given specialist service from focused assistants and can often try on their chosen outfits at the fitting stage to ensure they are correctly fitted. There is also a ‘Special Making Service’ if you want something especially made in your own cloth , such as a tie or a cravat for example.

Double the Delight

Rubis:

For a delicious and never to be forgotten experience, indulge in a glass of Rubis chocolate wine… Think of your ideal girly or pamper evening and we’re sure that chocolate and wine will feature high on the agenda. How clever then that the people at Rubis decided to blend the two! Though it’s been exported for several years, and is Africa’s favourite after dinner tipple, you may have only experienced this unique and gorgeous drink had you been lucky enough to stay in a luxury Dubai hotel or holiday on P&O and Cunard Cruise liners where Rubis forms part of the luxury ‘Chocoholics’ section, and is served at room temperature with chocolate or fruit cake; served over ice by itself, or drizzled over ice cream – mmmm!

How Rubis is created Rubis is actually a UK product. It’s created using Tempranillo red wine which is brought over from Spain, and blended with premium chocolate flavour. Both blending and bottling are done in London. The bold cherry fruit flavour enveloped in rich overtones of premium chocolate means that Rubis can be enjoyed as an after-dinner treat or on any special occasion.

Rubis – now in the UK! Though Rubis retains its exclusivity and isn’t available in supermarkets, this hidden gem has now been launched onto the UK market, making its first appearance at the BBC Good Food Show in June 2010 at the NEC. Wine and food connoissuers may have also seen it featured on Masterchef; A Taste of Christmas and at the BBC Good Food Show events over the Christmas period. Chefs tell us that it’s a great accompaniment to venison and game dishes, where the red fruit and chocolate combination work exceptionally well. Luckily for the rest of us, Rubis is also available from select outlets (www.wine-divine.co.uk; www.weaverswines.com and www.fraziers.co.uk, www.underwoods.co.uk) where you can enjoy the sampling experience. You can also receive information on attending one of a series of national tasting led events such as the BBC Good Food Shows and regional events throughout 2011. You could even think of including Rubis at your wedding by e-mailing rubis@jayish.com for more information. Alternatively, find details on Facebook (look up Rubis Chocolate Wine). Rubis will be in selected Malmaison Hotels from 1st February.

Rubis: a taste of Paradise - and we have 18 bottles to give away! Rubis is unlike anything you’ve ever tasted before. The first sip will taste like the sweetest cherry, immediately followed by a long, dark chocolate finish. Sounds delicious? It is! And what’s more, Brides Etc have 18 bottles to give away to our lucky readers! Simply email our Editor on: julie@bridesetc.co.uk to be in with a chance of winning. |

Andorra

amazing

Brides Etc are offering one lucky couple the chance to win an all expenses paid weekend in Arinsal in adorable Andorra. Read on for more about this beautiful country and find out how you can win the weekend break of your dreams! Andorra is a mini nation which sits in The Pyrenees between Spain and France. The whole country occupies just 181 square miles and has been an independent state since 1278. The people speak Catalan and English and the way of life is typically laid back and Meditteranean in feel, with dinner being eaten late in the evening and a very easy-going and relaxed attitude to life. The Andorrans have the world’s second highest life expectancy, and that’s not surprising given the healthy approach to exercise (children learn to ski as soon as they can walk) and the abundance of incredible cuisine and bracing mountain air. To reach this hidden gem, you can fly to Toulouse or Barcelona via Easyjet or British Airways and take a scenic transfer high up into the mountains. It takes approximately two and a half hours to reach your destination, but the wait is well worth it!

Ski Andorra Andorra has long been known as a budget country in which to ski, but a recent £112 million investment has seen a new lift system now in place and a swathe of high class hotels springing up (all built in keeping with the glorious rustic feel of the country). Unlike many resorts, it’s possible to walk from your hotel in Arinsal to the gondola in the centre of town, and be up in the mountains in a very short space of time. There are two main ski areas in Andorra – Vallnord (‘North Valley’) in the North, where you will be based, and Grandvalira to the East. The highest mountain, Coma Pedrosa, stands 9650 feet and all Andorra’s ski regions feature plenty of novice, intermediate and advanced runs. For those experienced skiiers or people looking for a real thrill, you could visit Aracalis, Andorra’s most remote resort in the Oridino Valley where you will find plenty of black runs, off-piste skiing and even heli-skiing. Ski equipment can be hired at Santmoritz where proprietors Peter and Patric can advise you (www.santmoritz.com).

Naturlandia Naturlandia (www.naturlandia.com) is a fabulous alternative to a day on the piste. Set high in the mountains you can reach this amazing ‘theme park’ by car or by taking the Tobotronc – the longest natural toboggan run in the world. Allow the ‘Tronc’ to pull you up the mountain for 5.3km and feel the thrill of descending the run again at break neck speed! Once in Naturlandia, choose from a range of exciting activities including ice skating; paintballing; cross country skiing; archery; quads; mushing with huskies; ski mobiles and more!

Relax in Style For non skiers and those needing to relax after a hard day on the slopes, Andorra is home to some fabulous spas. Caldea(www.caldea.com), Europe’s second largest mountain spa resort, is located in Escaldes-Engordany and is a paradise built around a central hot, thermal water lagoon. At Caldea you can indulge in a wide selection of beauty therapies or try the Roman bath; an aquamassage; sauna; infrared relaxation zone and much more. A further, smaller spa is located within the Princesa Parc hotel, which will be your base for your trip. In the summer months, try swimming at the open air pool at the Princessa Parc; horse-riding; walking; mountain biking and fishing . You should also indulge in après ski at Quo Vadis (www.quovadis-arinsal.com) and the famous Surf club – not to be missed!

four star hotel in Arinsal. Its sister hotel, the five star Diana Parc, adjoins it, yet both share stunning Roman style spa facilities and pride themselves on offering the very best in accommodation in the region. From high spec and opulent rooms to amazing dining and extremely friendly and attentive staff, the Princessa and the Diana cannot be surpassed. For those on a tighter budget, The Hotel Montane, owned by the fabulous Fiona, British Consul to Andorra, is small, very friendly and well worth a look (www.hotelmontane.com)

Food for thought Food in Andorra is filling and hearty. Choose from the Swiss-inspired delights of the Fondu Refugi restaurant – a popular and great fun way of dining - to the El Molis for the best burgers in town or El Bosc for traditional tapas.
