Welcome... As a newbie to film festivals, I’m almost speechless about the calibre of this year’s #BQFF2014 feature film line-up; a tailored list of the most popular LGBTIQ stories from Australia and around the world. For opening night, I’ve selected Out in the Line-Up, a film that uncovers the taboo of homosexuality in surfing. I’ve also gone mad for ground-breaking documentaries including Born This Way, a look into the Burning Man festival with Camp Beaverton: Meet the Beavers (for the girls) and Meet the GlamCocks (for the boys), plus Travis Mathews’ In Their Room: London, James Franco’s Interior. Leather Bar., Wu Tsang’s Wildness and Jeffrey Schwarz’s I Am Divine. The theme of forbidden passion and underlying same sex desire is ripe in this year’s program. 02. bqff.com.au
Bring your curious friends along to In The Name of, Free Fall (Freier Fall), Sexual Tension: Violetas, a retrospective screening of the revolutionary 1961 film Victim, or the Australian feature Monster Pies. If you’re after a light-hearted laugh, then take your friends (or a blind date) to see G.B.F. and the unmissable 20th anniversary screening of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (especially for those of us who are old enough to want to relive the roof shaking 1994 opening night at New Farm Village Twin). Festivals don’t just happen without people power and I’d like to make mention and thank our campaign ambassadors for their beauty, talent and support throughout the festival; Jake Harrison, Gregory Dunn, Vollie LaVont, Harry K,
DJ Ish and Jane Fuller. Brisbane Powerhouse is also loud and proud to partner with community organisations Queer Radio Brisbane, Queensland Positive People and Brisbane’s Gay and Lesbian Business Network. As you will see, there are a lot of new events to attend and to participate in at #BQFF2014. See you at Opening Night, Camp Out and Dragathong. Say hi, have a drink, enjoy new and old queer cinema, and celebrate the diversity and creativity of our out, loud and proud community. TROY ARMSTRONG FESTIVAL PRODUCER PICTURED DJ ISH and jane fuller

VICTIM
DIRECTED BY BAsil dearden (UK) 1961 DRAMA
This British thriller caused a storm of controversy in the 60s. Its recent re-release begs a second look at the forgotten classic. JOIN US FOR THIS RETROSPECTIVE SCREENING. In its time, when homosexuality was illegal in England, Victim was considered one of the most daring films ever made in Britain. Taken at face value, the screenplay is nothing new; a lawyer agrees to defend an old friend on a theft charge, only to be enmeshed in a blackmailing scheme. However, the lawyer had once been the male lover of his client. Startling filmgoers of the 60s, the homosexuals shown in Victim were seemingly normal, everyday blokes; a far cry from the stereotyped nance characters common to films. SPECIAL EVENTS

THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT DIRECTED BY STEPHAN ELLIOT (AUSTRALIA) 1994 DRAMA

Inspired by the myth of the rumoured-to-be lost gay S&M footage from the controversial 1980 Pacino film Cruising, filmmakers James Franco and Travis Mathews collaborate to create their own take on the missing footage. Amid the backdrop of a frenzied film set, actor Val Lauren reluctantly agrees to take the lead in the film. kit allowing them to perform the insemination in the comfort of their own home. There are plenty of men on his website willing to sell their sperm for various sums and sometimes one or two additional conditions. And so they begin "casting" for a potential donor.

TEST
DIRECTED BY Chris Mason Johnson (USA) 2013 DRAMA
The year is 1985. A newly-named disease is spreading fast and no one seems to know anything about it, except who it targets. Frankie is the newest member of San Francisco’s most exciting contemporary dance company. As six muscular male dancers tumble their way through athletic choreography, Frankie stands on the sidelines, mirroring the movement and looking a little weak. When the choreographer stops the music and mocks Frankie mercilessly, the other guys laugh – except for Todd. Todd is a veteran dancer in the same company and the bad boy to Frankie’s innocence. They’re friends. Opposites attract. 26. bqff.com.au
Outside of work, Frankie and Todd's friendship deepens. Todd’s wild persona turns out to be something of an act and Frankie is less naive than he seems. Together the friends navigate a world full of risk that is also, now and then, full of promise. I AM DIVINE
DIRECTED BY JEFFREY SCHWARZ (USA) 2013 DOCUMENTARY
This definitive biographical portrait of Harris Glenn Milstead, aka Divine, honours him in just the way he always craved — as a serious artist and immortal star. From his early days as a misfit youth in Baltimore, Divine was the ultimate outsider. Having transformed himself from a bullied schoolyard fat kid to a larger-than-life personality, he rose to infamy as a cult superstar. Divine stood up for millions of gay men and women, female impersonators, punk rockers, the ample figured and countless other socially ostracised people. With a completely committed in-your-face style, he blurred the line between performer and personality while revolutionising pop culture. FILMS
As outrageous and fun as Divine himself, I Am Divine combines rare home movies, photos, television appearances and live performance footage with new interviews from family, friends, colleagues and devotees such as John Waters, Ricki Lake, Mink Stole, Holly Woodlawn and Michael Musto. DIRECTED BY MALGOSKA SZUMOWSKA (POLAND) 2013 DRAMA Whilst taking over a small parish in the middle of nowhere, Father Adam is forced to confront a long forgotten burden and passion. Having organised a community centre for boys with troubled past, Father Adam is accepted by the locals as one of their own. Everybody wants to be close to Adam, feeding off of his vitality and power, but no one knows he harbors his own secret. After meeting the local pariah, an eccentric and silent young man, Adam is forced to confront a desire that he’s been suppressing. In an eerie primeval scene in a vast cornfield, the priest and the boy play hide-and-seek, calling to each other with ape-like howls, as the villagers' worst suspicions are validated. 28. bqff.com.au

QUEENSLAND POSITIVE PEOPLE FUNDRAISER
MEET THE GLAMCOCKS DIRECTED BY VINCENT ROMMELAERE (AUSTRALIA) 2013 DOCUMENTARY
Go inside a day in the life of the GlamCocks at the world’s most epic festival, Burning Man. The GlamCocks are one of 600 camps, and certainly the gayest, that come together to create Black Rock City at Burning Man. Follow the group as they set up camp, build their structures, explore the art (not to mention each other) and experience everything from wild parties to life-affirming experiences. For a group with such a uniform physical aesthetic (all members are generally handsome with an athletic physique) they’re represented by diverse personality types. Director Vincent Rommelaere talks to FILMS
many of the 60-member-strong group, discussing the sense of kinship and freedom that comes with being a GlamCock. Each member has a specific and personal take on being a part of this joyous, flamboyant organisation and the impact of the greater Burning Man experience. Proceeds from this screening will be donated to Queensland Positive People. qpp.net.au

As the reality of each other’s personal differences surface during the romantic escape, a mysterious woman comes out of the wilderness and forces the couple to embark on a journey of self-discovery that threatens to tear them apart.
SUPAGAY Jane is in a cafe. She can hear some young folks talking trash, using the word "gay" to mean "bad". Is it actually okay to say the word "gay"? Are homos too sensitive? Do you look a bit like a lezzlie? This short film doesn't question or discuss any of these things. It's actually pretty gay. Written and directed by Meaghan Palmer, 6:22

MOVE Nik and Jacquie are moving in together. As they’re manoeuvring their possessions, the wardrobe becomes wedged in the doorway. They try everything but it looks like they’re trapped.
