04 WELCOME

Lord Mayor’s Message Brisbane is the envy of the rest of the country at this time of year and spring is the perfect time to enjoy the array of arts and culture on offer. The year-round Writers + Ideas series delivers another packed season of brilliant minds with acclaimed actor Richard Roxburgh and our own Beth Wilson presenting a historic review of Brisbane’s houses and gardens. This August we welcome the ever-popular World Press Photo exhibition as it lines the walls of Brisbane Powerhouse. See some of the most intimate and captivating moments from around the globe, including the winning image by Australia’s Warren Richardson.

Every year we look forward to September as the Brisbane Festival returns. As one of Australia’s premier festivals, this event celebrates Brisbane as a modern, dynamic New World City. This year you can see dance fuse with visual art in the Australian exclusive of Rules of the Game, go on a cross-cultural journey with HANAKO, or take in Chekhov’s First Play; a dynamic reimaging of one of the Russian playwright’s rediscovered early works.

With many more theatre, dance, exhibitions and ideas events featured, there’s something for everyone to look forward to during this wonderful season at Brisbane Powerhouse.

Graham Quirk Lord Mayor

In October, you’re invited to witness two legends of the Australian music industry unite, as Kate Ceberano and Paul Grabowsky come together for an exclusive performance of some of the great love songs of the past 50 years.

Brisbane Powerhouse is a not-for-profit organisation, owned and supported by Brisbane City Council.

WELCOME 05

Artistic Director’s Message “All those years I thought that it was power that brought responsibility. It’s not. I was wrong. It’s responsibility that brings power. It’s knowing what needs to be done that brings strength. And courage.” PETER PARKER, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

This month is an excuse to quote a few heroes, and to get a fantastic artist to draw the cover illustration of Brisbane Powerhouse. Thanks to Danikah Harrison, a member of our vibrant Brisbane comics and zine scene for the amazing cover illustration! Our responsibility at Brisbane Powerhouse is to living arts and culture, and representing the personality of contemporary Brisbane. This month is a great time to remind yourself of how cool this town is—from sitting out on the deck and grabbing a great meal, to catching some free indie music or seeing a show.

We’re wrapping our arms around such a wide array of good art, from a new Brisbane production of True West to the return of BOY&GIRL, from Richard Roxburgh to Brisbane Festival and Titanic: The Movie, The Play. So come and enjoy the best of Brisbane with us over these next few months.

Chekhov’s First Play DEAD CENTRE (IRELAND) Chekhov before he was Chekhov. During the turmoil of the 1917 Russian Revolution, Chekhov’s sister placed many of her late brother’s manuscripts in a safety deposit box. In 1921, Soviet scholars opened the box and discovered a play. The title page was missing. The play they found has too many characters, too many themes, too much action. Generally dismissed as unstageable. Like life.

Chekhov’s First Play is a wrecking ball riff on the play, Chekhov, the theatre, life, death and pretty much everything else. And if it’s all too much, headphones are provided so that you can listen to the director’s live and cutting commentary.

Rules of the Game

JONAH BOKAER, DANIEL ARSHAM, PHARRELL WILLIAMS (USA) Witness this ground-breaking partnership that combines choreography by innovator of American contemporary dance Jonah Bokaer, scenography by visual artist Daniel Arsham and original score by multi-GRAMMY® Award-winner Pharrell Williams. This Australian exclusive is fresh from its premiere in Dallas in May and ahead of its New York premiere in November. Rules of the Game, based loosely on Pirandello, is a multidisciplinary work for eight dancers—some of the most gifted of their generation—featuring dance, video and sculpture. Bokaer is the youngest dancer to ever join Merce Cunningham’s company and is Robert Wilson’s regular choreographic collaborator. His crisp, elegant aesthetic is a sculptural accompaniment to Arsham’s offbeat, architectural environments in this performance set to Williams’ first-ever orchestral score for theatre or dance. This is dance as visual art.

IMAGE: JAMES LAW

Rules Of The Game is performed with two earlier works: RECESS (2010), Bokaer’s signature solo, and Why Patterns (2011), a series of choreographed games featuring 5,000 ping pong balls.

Don Watson:

ON THE U.S. PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN CONVERSATION WITH PAUL BARCLAY Enjoy a fascinating evening with this award-winning author and former speech writer to Paul Keating.

You’ll hear insights direct from historian, author and public speaker Don Watson, as gathered on-the-ground in the lead up to the U.S. Presidential elections. Almost a decade after his acclaimed American Journeys, Watson revisits the most powerful democracy on earth and looks at just how wild and weird it’s become.

With his trademark wit and wry observational style, Watson expands on his September Quarterly Essay, which explored American greatness in the age of inequality and what this divisive election means for us, and them.

Plenty Prominent and emerging Australian artists feature in this unique exhibition that explores our interconnectedness and dependence on the natural world. For most of human history, the natural world appeared to provide us with everything we need to thrive. But given the current ecological crisis— driven by humanity’s insatiable consumption of the world’s minerals, plants, animals,

water and soils—is the Earth still plentiful? The exhibition is a central part of RONA16 (Rights of Nature Australia National Arts Fiesta). RONA16 is hosted by the Australian Earth Laws Alliance (AELA) in collaboration with artists around Australia. Plenty is curated by Associate Professor Marian Drew, Griffith University in consultation with Co-Founder and National Convenor of the Australian Earth Laws Alliance, Dr Michelle Maloney.

Peter Mares:

NOT QUITE AUSTRALIAN IN CONVERSATION WITH PAUL BARCLAY Award-winning journalist Peter Mares shares insights and challenging new ideas about Australia’s growing culture of temporary migration with Paul Barclay (RN Big Ideas).

There are more than a million temporary migrants living in Australia. They work, pay tax and abide by our laws, yet they have no voice in our democracy. In his new book Not Quite Australian, Peter Mares draws on case studies, personal stories and carefully assembled data

to investigate this new era of temporary migration. At what point does someone become ‘Australian’ in a moral sense? How do these ‘visitors’ change the nature of Australian society and Australian multiculturalism? Hear Peter share his perspective on topics such as the expansion of the 457 work visa, the unique experience of New Zealand migrants, and our highly politicised asylumseeker policies.

PASSCHENDAELE: REQUIEM FOR DOOMED YOUTH IN CONVERSATION WITH PAUL BARCLAY Award-winning history writer, Paul Ham sits down with Paul Barclay (RN Big Ideas) to discuss his new book, Passchendaele: Requiem for Doomed Youth and examines why this particular World War One battle epitomises everything that was most terrible about the Western Front. Yes, we commemorate World War One. Yes, we adorn our breasts with poppies. But have we seen? Have we understood? Have we dared to reason why?

Passchendaele lays down a powerful challenge to the idea of war as an inevitable expression of the human will, and examines the culpability of governments and military commanders in a catastrophe that destroyed the best part of a generation.
