Artistic Director’s Message “I find only freedom in the realms of eccentricity.” DAVID BOWIE
Here at Brisbane Powerhouse we value the eccentrics. We value the dreamers, the poets, the provocateurs, the showmen and everyone who wants to do more than work and pay bills before they die. This season we have a stellar line up of events and shows that will challenge you, entertain you and help you see the world from another perspective. Be challenged by our Writers + Ideas program, with acclaimed authors Alain de Botton and Gloria Steinem who will share revelations from their latest books. Alain will cover how to stay in love for the long-haul and Gloria will discuss how her on-the-road lifestyle led to her unique brand of feminism. If that’s not challenging enough then see Doug Anthony Allstars for their Near Death Experience, which promises to be irreverent and enlightening. Queensland Cabaret Festival takes the stage for the third year running in June, and we’re proud to announce that we’re
hosting Molly Ringwald (Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles) and Harry Shearer (The Simpsons). You can also join us for a celebration of David Bowie with the return season of the sell-out hit The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. World Press Photo will give you a new perspective on the world. See award-winning images from 42 press photographers from 21 countries and get an insight into global politics, culture, nature, sport and everyday life. As you peruse the program guide we hope you find events to help you celebrate with friends, feed your mind with ideas or simply enjoy a good story told well. As our new friend Gloria Steinem said:
“Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning.”

Jess Cochrane: FearLess Emerging artist Jess Cochrane explores the impact of consumerism on feminism in this special exhibition. Cochrane’s work combines portrait photography and expressionism painting in order to create works that are colourful, expressive and tantalise the viewer. Is the photographic portrait’s beauty obscured or amplified by the vibrant splash of paint? You decide.
The exhibition also investigates the male gaze and women’s view of themselves. Cochrane takes photos which exemplify the “male gaze” (the view of women as pliant, sexual objects) and then transforms them into striking artworks, which can be viewed as challenging, celebratory or grotesque.

Beyond Belief
HUGH MACKAY IN CONVERSATION WITH PAUL BARCLAY Join one of Australia’s most widely respected authors, social researcher Hugh Mackay, as he chats to Paul Barclay about how we find meaning and purpose, with or without religion. Most Australians (61%, according to the last census) think of themselves as Christian, and around 67% of Australians say they believe in God or some ‘higher power’. But only eight percent attend church weekly. Why the gap? Mackay argues that while our attachment to a traditional idea of God may be
waning, our desire for a sense of meaning remains as strong as ever. In his new book Beyond Belief, Mackay looks at the various ways we try to find transcendence in our stridently materialistic lives and considers what may be lost with the wholesale casting out of organised religion.

TimeOverDistance OverTime When the distances between us are increasing in a world that’s supposed to be getting smaller, how do we “bridge the gap”? TimeOverDistanceOverTime invites you to join a cast of six dancers as they wrestle with the physical and emotional distances they encounter, while living at opposite ends of the planet. As people today travel further, staying in touch becomes more complicated. Digital technology is a lifeline but is ultimately
a poor substitute for the full presence of a person, standing beside you and understanding you. As we get further away from each other we lose our ability not just to listen but to interpret and experience the myriad physical messages that enhance our experience of each other.

INTIMATE VOICES Hear this acclaimed Australian string quartet tackle some of classical music’s most challenging pieces in this special concert. Composers have frequently turned to the ‘intimate voices’ of the string quartet to express their deepest emotions, including Schubert and Shostakovich whose works juxtapose the human and the inhuman. Point Quartet features Cameron Hough (violin), Matthew Gillett (violin), Anna Jack (viola) and Ngaio Toombes (cello).
Together the group continues their cycle of Shostakovich quartets playing String Quartet No. 2 in A major alongside Schubert’s iconic and intense ‘Death and the Maiden’ String Quartet No. 14 in D minor and String Quartet No. 3 ‘Absence’ by Australian composer Houston Dunleavy. ‘Absence’ is written in memory of Daniel Pearl, a journalist killed by Al Qaeda in Pakistan.
