BOOK NOW BRISBANECOMEDYFESTIVAL.COM

Welcome to Brisbane Comedy Festival 2017 Comedy is the blues for people who can't sing. Brisbane Comedy Festival is bigger than ever! It's so big, that we have an exciting second hub at Brisbane City Hall, with 13 comedians taking the various stages. And it's not just the comedians taking over the city. We have invited Brisbane's best food vendors to serve up international delights in King George Square, as well as some free debates to amuse you while you're munching on your supper. The 2017 program is bursting at the seams with over 60 comedians so much funnier than we could ever attempt to be. I mean, we’ve tried to be funny, but it’s hard to explain puns to kleptomaniacs because they always take things, literally. The Festival kicks off once again with the Brisbane Comedy Festival Gala at Brisbane City Hall. The Festival continues throughout March with outstanding international comedians, as well as our favourite national and local laugh-makers. A special thanks to The Comedy Channel, our presenting partner for Brisbane Comedy Festival. This is the third year they have supported the festival and we have enjoyed sharing so many laughs with them. Don't hold back; join us for four weeks of side-splitting laughter, and remember what Steve Martin said: comedy is the art of making people laugh without making them puke. Kris Stewart Artistic Director, Brisbane Powerhouse

On his last Australian tour he re-introduced his prop comedy mixed with his stand-up and audience participation. THEY LOVED IT. RUBY WAX FRAZZLED

A Guide To Mindfulness: A Forum for Discussion. Drop dead gorgeous, sassy and smart, Ruby Wax brings her new five star, one-woman show to the stage. Based on her number one best seller, A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled. She’s been honoured with the title of poster girl for mental illness; once crazy, now less so, she gives a tour of the mind—how to use it, not lose it. By the way, she graduated from Oxford three years ago (at a late stage), so she should know her stuff.

MERRICK WATTS MAN OF THE HOUR

Life is confusing and no one has all the answers… except Merrick Watts. None of his answers are right but at least he’s having a go. This is Merrick’s first solo show. We know! What’s he been doing? He puts the delay down to not being able to come up with a funny enough quote for the poster. Man of the Hour attempts to answer all the questions nobody’s asking, like “Where did all the bull ants go? Now we have sink holes. Coincidence? I think not!” AS HEARD ON TRIPLE M’S MERRICK AND AUSTRALIA PRESENTED BY BRISBANE COMEDY FESTIVAL AND TOKEN EVENTS

DAVE THORNTON Onwards & Upwards

SAMMY J

HERO COMPLEX

This is a stand-up comedy show about my life. What’s been happening in it? Glad you asked, hypothetical person.

An unbelievably true story from the star of ABC’s Playground Politics, that won Best Comedy at the 2016 Melbourne Fringe Festival.

Well, last year I bought a house and had a kid. Mature moves, I guess, but can I remind you this is all from a man who is still too lazy to clean his bed sheets and instead leaves them on his bed and vacuums them. I’ll also be talking about other stuff I find funny and/or interesting. Come along and if you don’t laugh at least once I’ll give you your money back.*

In 1996, Sammy J borrowed some Phantom comics from his school gardener. That moment set off a chain of events that led to the birth of his daughter, saw him committing a crime in Canberra, and ended with a federal policeman searching his attic.

*Actual reimbursement cannot occur because of aforementioned house and child.

Sammy J is an award-winning comedian, having performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Montreal Just for Laughs Festival, been nominated for three ARIA awards, and provides the human half of the acclaimed man/puppet comedy duo, Sammy J & Randy.

FRANK WOODLEY I, WOODLEY

Power. Control. How much of it have I got? Not much. If I could get more, would I want it? I like to think that if I was an Egyptian pharaoh, I would’ve used my total unlimited god-like power… in a nice way. When my son called me a dick potato, I was somewhat aghast. I had no idea what a dick potato was, but it didn’t sound good. Turns out… according to him, “You know how potatoes are called ‘taters? Well, a dick potato is like a dick ‘tater, but they’re more of a dick and more of a potato.”

ALEX WARD QUIET

Alex Ward returns home with her debut solo show, Quiet. Life is full of certainties and uncertainties. For instance: it was uncertain, when growing up, how straight Alex's parents could get her teeth, but it was certain they would subject her to as much pain as necessary to achieve their goal. NOTHING YOU DO MEANS ANYTHING Michael Workman has been getting jaded and weird. This is a show about that. And bees. It’s pieced together from angry letters to the editor and half cut off biographies from Fantales wrappers. It’s sometimes quite beautiful and lucid, and other times it’s manic and frightening. Nothing You Do Means Anything is broken and parts of it are on fire. It smells like wet carpet, and it leans to one side, but that’s kind of good. This is the most iconoclastic show multi-award winning comedian Michael Workman has produced. It may kill him. SAM CAMPBELL THE SLAMMER

Hey thanks for reading this blurb. What a weird word—Blurb. BLURB. This blurb is for my hot new comedy show, which is all about prison. I will be performing the show inside a cage, dangling above the audience (if the lady at Brisbane Powerhouse says we are allowed). BLUUURB. P.S. My phone number is 0439 211 892 if you want to hang during the day while I’m in Brisbane. I have to go see my nana in Mount Gravatt but apart from that I should be free. PRESENTED BY BRISBANE COMEDY FESTIVAL AND CENTURY ENTERTAINMENT DATE Tue 21–Sun 26 Mar TIME Tue–Sat 8.30pm, Sun 7.30pm VENUE Rooftop Terrace, Brisbane Powerhouse TICKETS Tue–Thu + Sun $20, Fri–Sat $25 + transaction fee ($3 single/$6 multiple tickets)

ANGUS GORDON SAD BOY COMEDY HOUR

A series of pauses that build tension towards a climax. Teetering between bleak anti-humour and punchy one-liners, Angus Gordon balances whimsy and social critique. The show is the best of his stand up, often focusing on the violent contradictions that constitute ordinary experience, and a series of little parables he wrote in a diary while going through depression. It’s funny! WINNER RAW COMEDY 2015 PRESENTED BY BRISBANE COMEDY FESTIVAL AND ANGUS GORDON DATE Tue 28 Feb–Sun 05 Mar TIME Tue–Sat 8.30pm, Sun 7.30pm VENUE Graffiti Room, Brisbane Powerhouse TICKETS Tue–Thu + Sun $20, Fri–Sat $25 + transaction fee ($3 single/$6 multiple tickets)

CHRIS WAINHOUSE JUDGED

Ten years ago Chris did a short stint in a maximum security prison. This show is for anyone who didn't read his scathing review on Trip Adviser. Spoiler alert... he wasn't a fan. Known for his searing angular prose and regarded by many as one of the finest comedians and comedy writers in the business. In 2016 Chris took home the coveted Melbourne International Comedy Festival Piece of Wood Award. He’s also won the Comedian of the Year (previously won by Carl Baron, Flacco and The Umbilical Brothers). Sharp witted and daringly clever, Chris Wainhouse is guaranteed to bring any audience undone.
