WELCOME 05
Artistic Director’s Message There’s a man who’s as strong as a XXXX beer, Standing tall as our best sugarcane. And tonight you all know why we’re gathered here, ‘cause it’s time to begin his campaign. He’s the only man for us. As sure as God’s in heaven We’ll have a Queenslander in Canberra In 1987. It’s Joh for PM! It’s ‘cause of him that Queensland rocks, Though his methods are unorthodox. It’s Joh for PM! Australia could be just as great As we are in the Sunshine State...
This winter at Brisbane Powerhouse, there’s no business like Joh business. I’m crazy excited to be able to direct the premiere production of the great new musical Joh for PM, by off-Broadway composer-lyricist Paul Hodge 2017 and Matilda Award winner Stephen Carleton. Joh for PM is one of the absolute highlights of our year—but there’s no shortage of similar highlights coming up. We have the return of international megastars BRIEFS, with their world-premiere new show; we have authors such as Susan Faludi and Ian Rankin as part of our new Writers + Ideas International Series; we have performers such as Alan Cumming and the Modern Maori Quartet headlining the 2017 Queensland Cabaret Festival; and we have musicians such as Sarah Blasko and Jimmy Webb smashing it in the Powerhouse Theatre. As Joh would (maybe) say—don’t you worry about what to see this winter, as we have a bunch of things to warm you up at Brisbane Powerhouse!

Joh for PM
A NEW MUSICAL BY PAUL HODGE AND STEPHEN CARLETON
Joh for PM launches this July at Brisbane Powerhouse to take Queenslanders on a musical romp through the life of ex-Premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen, the Queensland icon who set state politics alight.
This toe-tapping, hilarious cautionary tale will resonate with Queenslanders who lived through the Joh era, as well as those who are yet to learn about this colourful time in our State’s history.
The musical comedy satirises the bizarre events that occurred in Australian politics during the Bjelke-Petersen reign. Set at a fundraiser for Joh in 1987, audiences will want to sing along to original tunes such as Pumpkin Scone Diplomacy, Feeding the Chooks and the catchiest political song ever, Joh for PM.
Join us for a laugh, a joke and a bloody good time.
Bjelke-Petersen was Queensland’s longest serving, longest-lived, most quotable Premier. He was one of the best-known and most controversial political figures of 20th century Australia. Broadway composer Paul Hodge (Clinton: The Musical) and Award-winning playwright Stephen Carleton (The Narcissist, The Turquoise Elephant, Bastard Territory) and have taken inspiration from these historic events to create one of the best musicals to come out of Queensland.
Music & Lyrics: Paul Hodge Playwright: Stephen Carleton Starring: Colin Lane, Gretel Scarlett, Barb Lowing, Kurt Phelan, Stephen Hirst and Simon Burvill-Homes. Director: Kris Stewart

12 QUEENSLAND CABARET FESTIVAL
Cabaret comes in many forms, but at its heart, it is a form of storytelling. It can be stunningly beautiful as well as thrilling and hilarious. It’s an everchanging evolution of ideas and performances, a mix of music, song, dance, comedy and movement. Many think of cabaret as an evening stroll down a Paris cobblestone street, falling into a small wine bar and listening to Edith Piaf covers. However, it is so much more. Originating in the city of love, it has evolved and taken over performance spaces across the world, offering intimate, heartfelt performances,
soulful recitals and comical narratives. Queensland Cabaret Festival 2017 invites you behind the red velvet curtain to discover the scintillating world of cabaret! From spine-tingling homegrown talents, to international sensations, this year’s Festival tells stories of love, loss, passion and fame. Performing across three venues this year, immerse yourself in the sublime acoustic of QPAC’s Concert Hall, feel the heat with the intimacy of Brisbane Powerhouse, then discover new and exciting local talent at Queensland Multicultural Centre.
Whether you want an evening soaked in nostalgia or a contemporary romp of music re-imagined, this year’s Festival will connect with your musical soul and leave you singing out for more. DATE

IN CONVERSATION WITH PAUL BARCLAY
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Susan Faludi sits down with Paul Barclay, presenter and series producer of Big Ideas on ABC RN, to share her sometimes funny, sometimes painful and always poignant investigation into identity, which she eloquently delves into through her book, In the Darkroom. In the summer of 2004, Fauldi learned that her 76-year-old father—long estranged and living
in Hungary—had undergone sex reassignment surgery. Faludi’s struggle to come to grips with her father’s reinvented self takes her across borders—historical, political, religious, sexual—to bring her face to face with the question of the age: Is identity something you “choose,” or is it the very thing you can’t escape?

The prestigious World Press Photo of the Year award was given to Turkish photographer Burhan Ozbilici. Ozbilici’s picture shows Mevlüt Mert Altıntas, a 22-yearold off-duty police officer, moments after he assassinated the Russian ambassador to Turkey, Andrey Karlov, at an art exhibition in Ankara, Turkey, on 19 Dec 2016. Altıntas wounded three other people before being killed by officers in a shootout. The image also won first prize in the Spot News Stories category.

Blue Bones BY MERLYNN TONG When a woman finds scars left by her ex-boyfriend of many years ago etched into her bones, she begins a turbulent journey to unpack her past and discover how he got under her skin. Based on the true story of two teenagers’ romance as it blossoms then warps in the heat of bustling Singapore, Blue Bones is a one-woman show told with incredible honesty by Merlynn Tong. Combining multiple characters,
song and arcade games, Blue Bones is a whirlwind of love and sex, violence and courage, with the wreckage continuing to be felt across the years. Against the backdrop of Singapore with all its beauty, rigidity and insistent chaos, Blue Bones will enchant and disturb, and perhaps even wake the stories dormant in your bones.
