WELCOME

Lord Mayor’s Message As our days heat up, so too does the program at Brisbane Powerhouse. Proving to be a colourful favourite with Brisbane audiences, Wonderland Festival returns to Brisbane Powerhouse in late November. A feast of comedy, circus, visual arts, burlesque, music and so much more awaits. This menagerie of sights, sounds and delights, has something for everyone. The Australian Performing Arts Market (APAM), the biggest Arts market in Australia, is the hot ticket for our local, national and

international Arts community in February. A coup for Brisbane Arts patrons in 2018 is that, for the first time, part of the APAM program is also open to the public. Get along and see some of Australia’s cutting-edge performing arts. Brisbane City Council is very proud to partner once again with Brisbane Powerhouse to present the Brisbane Comedy Festival Gala at City Hall. It will be a huge year for comedy in Brisbane. Held over three venues, the laughs this year will be heard as far as SunPAC on Brisbane’s southside.

With an incredible array of festivals, cultural experiences and comedy on offer, I encourage everyone to discover something new at Brisbane Powerhouse this summer.

Graham Quirk Lord Mayor

Brisbane Powerhouse is a not-for-profit organisation, owned and supported by Brisbane City Council.

5 WELCOME 05

Artistic Director’s Message “Here it is the groove slightly transformed just a bit of a break from the norm...” SUMMERTIME DJ JAZZY JEFF & THE FRESH PRINCE

Look – it’s almost summer, right? We can all start preparing for the end of the year, fighting through Christmas, braving the sales and maybe even having a few days of relaxing? The climate might not change that much – hey, it’s Brisbane, a place where people think “formal occasion” means their best active wear – but the vibe changes now that we’ve landed at the end of the year. It’s about getting out and experiencing things, it’s about enjoying people and great times, it’s about taking the Delta Cream of life, twisting it open and eating all of its creamy goodness. I think I’ve gotten off track. It’s heading out to a festival and trying something new. Like Wonderland Festival, our end of the year celebration, where

you can see 25 new shows across every venue at Brisbane Powerhouse. Circus, cabaret, comedy, music, burlesque, and more. Or it’s a show like The Wine Bluffs, which is comedy targeted at both wine experts and wine idiots. And those people that start as wine experts and, after five drinks, become wine idiots. We have works from overseas, with London’s Soho Theatre presenting Fleabag; works from interstate, with The Theatre Division presenting Miracle City; and most importantly, new works from Brisbane, with the world premiere of Wax Lyrical’s production of Shane Pike’s Nineteen. Plus, we have the guaranteed best works from Australia-wide coming to Brisbane for the

Australian Performing Arts Market, and for the first time ever, we’re making those available for all of Brisbane to see. So get on board! Tear off your formal active wear, put on your best hypercolor t-shirt or mankini, and head on down!!

Kris Stewart

COMEDY 07

The Wine Bluffs Ever wondered what wine goes best with fairy bread? Why hasn’t the ‘Champagne Spider’ caught on? These questions and many more will be inadequately answered by the self-styled sommeliers of comedy, Damian Callinan and Paul Calleja. After intoxicating sold out audiences across the country, The Wine Bluffs are here to do what they do best; bullshit about wine. Laying spurious claims to a reputation as renowned wine consultants, the duo, fresh from judging the Fruit Wine Section at The Rockhampton Show, will take you through the cellar door experience with a comedic twist.

“Wildly funny winespeak, a romp around the vineyard that seeks to demystify the cellar door experience and only leaves us feeling more confused”

êêêêê HERALD SUN

“Holds a mirror up to the hobby of high-end wine appreciation”

Courtney Act Under the Covers Courtney has been under the covers with many, but not usually in front of a live audience. It’s time to get tucked in with all your favourite songs that have been covered in one way or another by all your favourite artists. Lay back and enjoy the caress of those romantic satin sheets as she strips some songs down, and flips others on their back to show you just how gender fluid a great song can be. The sweet dreams Courtney spins will leave you pillow fighting, and pillow biting.

10 THEATRE

Nineteen Award-winning company, Wax Lyrical Productions, presents the world premiere of Nineteen, a dark comedy about four young men, Noah, George, Adam and Josh, living in a share house. From the outside they seem like fun, lovable larrikins but underneath the bravado and binge drinking lurks something more sinister. From beers and brotherhood to loss and loneliness, this endearing story uncovers the hidden side of finding yourself in a world filled with complexity

and confusion. Crafted from interviews with over ninety young people, the four mates at the heart of Nineteen reflect the hopes of the next generation. Amongst the laughs and unmistakable Australian sense of humour, writer/director Shane Pike unmasks the complexity and fear our brothers and mates are living with which, if left uncovered, can result in the greatest of tragedies. This show will leave a lasting impression.

Fleabag Following the BAFTA awardwinning BBC series, DryWrite and Soho Theatre bring you the acclaimed stage production of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s cult hit. Fleabag may seem over-sexed, emotionally unfiltered and in denial, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. With family and friendships under strain and a guinea pig themed café struggling to keep afloat, Fleabag suddenly finds herself with nothing to lose. Stumbling through a maze of social anxiety, disastrous job interviews and meaningless sex,

Fleabag serves up an uproariously funny and true account of some sort of a female living her sort of life.

Saga Land

BY KÁRI GÍSLASON AND RICHARD FIDLER Following a sold-out season in 2016, author Kári Gíslason and broadcaster Richard Fidler return to Brisbane Powerhouse to celebrate their muchanticipated book on Iceland.

Join them for an evening of dazzling stories, sounds, and images featuring a gripping blend of family mystery alongside beautiful and bloody Viking tales, set in the starkly stunning landscape of Iceland.

The sagas, true tales of the lives of the early Viking settlers are among the greatest stories ever written, but the identity of their authors is largely unknown. Together, Richard and Kári travel across Iceland, through fields and forests, across streams and fjords, to tell these powerful, seductive tales in the places where they unfolded.

Miracle City Jump back to the 80s as part of the ‘studio audience’ of a live-to-air televangelical TV show and meet the Truswells from Tennessee – a family with a dream to build a religious amusement park. The only thing stopping Pastor Ricky Truswell (Gus Murray, The Great Gatsby, McLeod’s Daughters, Packed to the Rafters), his wife Lora Lee (Kellie Rode, Mamma Mia!, Rocky Horror Show) and their ‘apple-pie’ kids from realising

their dream is the cash to make it happen. When Millard Sizmore (Anthony Phelan, The Kettering Incident, Rake) comes to town and makes a tempting offer, cracks begin to appear in the façade of Miracle City. Just how far will the Truswells go to make their dream a reality? Featuring the gospel inspired sounds of the Citadel Singers including Lara Mulcahy (Les Miserables, Mamma Mia!), Josie Lane (Little Shop of Horrors,

Priscilla The Musical) and multiple ARIA Award winning artist Missy Higgins in her musical debut. PRESENTED BY THE THEATRE DIVISION DATE Wed 24 Jan–Sun 04 Feb TIME

The Gospel According to Matthew

There’s Something About Mary(s)

Inspired by Tim Minchin’s musical genius and questionable views espoused by certain politicians, this cabaret features everything you were taught NOT to discuss in polite company.

See inside the relationship between one woman and the entire gay community of Brisbane, as sassy musical theatre student Cassie G shares her trials of love, loss and responsibilities as a queen-in-waiting.

Backbone In less than a decade, Adelaide’s acrobatic sensations Gravity & Other Myths have rocketed to stellar acclaim with a series of disarmingly accomplished ensemble work. Staged with a deceptively DIY aesthetic and dispensing with trickery and distraction, this is circus that goes straight for the jugular. Backbone is the culmination of all that’s gone before. A celebration of human connectedness and the

meaning of strength, its athletic appeal is combined with a conceptual brilliance that elevates it to a new level. Sexy but sincere, raw yet utterly disciplined, Backbone is proof you can’t do the impossible without a little sweat.

“Magnetic… a perfect combination of fluidity, mettle and danger.”

[MIS]CONCEIVE Extracting contemporary gestural motif from Aboriginal archetypes, [MIS]CONCEIVE’s hip-hop, physical percussion and rhythmic cultural pattern is expressive and immediate. Through the assertion of a continuous Aboriginal dance canon, the aesthetic rejects, reveals and re-educates

modern (mis)understandings of Indigeneity, [MIS]CONCEIVE argues that ‘knowledge’ does not equal comprehension. Books are not their covers. One size does not fit all.

The Irresistible The Irresistible is an exploration of the invisible and insidious nature of unconscious bias, told through multiple parallel narratives that intersect through mystery and sci-fi. Locations and time bleed into one another with dream-like fluidity as performers' transition from one character to the next at breakneck-speed.

Deep in the gloom a phone rings. The voice on the line slips beneath her skin and curls its fingers around his stomach. You can’t see it, you can’t touch it, you can barely feel it. You can’t hold on tight enough. The Irresistible is a reckless, intoxicating love letter to the subconscious.

Permission to Speak

BY CHAMBER MADE Poised in the delicate space between concert and theatre, Chamber Made’s Permission to Speak explores the most universal of relationships – that of parent and child – as it exists and evolves through a lifetime. This first-time collaboration between director Tamara Saulwick and composer Kate Neal pairs contemporary performance with musical composition to construct a revealing portrait of the experience of family.

IMAGE: PIER CARTHEW

Musings, diatribes, recollections and hindsight find voice as four performer/vocalists are fused in choral counterpoint with an assembly of pre-recorded voices. Built from interviews with people of all ages, Permission to Speak interweaves the complexities, parallels and paradoxes of this dynamic relationship.

Feed the Beast Talk WITH KY FURNEAUX Hollywood Stunt Artist Ky Furneaux takes the FUEL stage for an intimate interview about surviving the film business, and the wild. Ky Furneaux’s career reads like an actual Hollywood script: from stunt work on films such as The Avengers, Thor, and X-Men 3, and winning a stuntindustry-equivalent Oscar for

Best Female Stunt Performer in the world; to her adventures as a real-life Survival Expert (AKA the ‘female Bear Grylls’). But it was almost never meant to be. At 19, a car accident left her with limited mobility and doctors feared she would never be able to live the active lifestyle she loved. It was only with enormous levels of determination,

persistence and tenacity that she fought forward and beyond. PRESENTED BY FUEL DATE Tue 14 Nov TIME

The Story of Brisbane Come on a walk around Brisbane Powerhouse with award-winning actors Therese Collie and Tim Mullooly as they tell the fascinating story of Brisbane as captured in the words of its great writers – from Steele Rudd to David Malouf, the defining poetry of Oodgeroo Noonuccal to the songs of The Go-Betweens and more. The Story of Brisbane is packed with anecdote, humour and information as it celebrates the many wondrous ways writers have seen our city.

Witty, enthusiastic and steeped in Brisbane cultural knowledge, Therese and Tim happily veer off into subjects that wouldn’t be covered by the tourist brochures. Soak up the atmosphere of Brisbane Powerhouse and gain a unique insight into the way of life of Brisbane people: from its original Indigenous inhabitants to the European convicts and free settlers, through wars and depression up to the present day.
