Lord Mayor’s Message With an exciting array of performances on offer, you’ll be spoilt for choice this season at Brisbane Powerhouse. If you’re after a real laugh, head along to Brisbane Comedy Festival where you’ll see a variety of comedians including household names like Wil Anderson, Fiona O’Loughlin, Lawrence Mooney and Celia Paquola. Featuring over 70 comedians, expanding across three venues, this is Australia’s fastest growing comedy festival.

Not sure what to do over the school holiday period? Brisbane Powerhouse will have your jaws on the floor, hooting for more with non-stop acrobatic comedy in Children Are Stinky. Bring the whole family along to experience this action-packed extravaganza. In May, the fourth annual MELT: Festival of Queer Arts and Culture will celebrate our LGBTI+ communities with a dazzling program of theatre, comedy, music, cabaret, visual arts and more. And, if that wasn’t enough, Writers+Ideas will be bursting with activity featuring authors Tim Winton, Jamila Rizvi, Kitty Flanagan and Hugh Mackay – just to name a few.

With a program this jam-packed, I encourage everyone to experience something new at Brisbane Powerhouse this Autumn – whether to see a premiere performance, soak up the festival atmosphere or simply enjoy a meal with breathtaking river views.

MELT: Festival of Queer Arts and Culture returns for its fourth year, opening on IDAHOT Day with an extraordinary program that includes the BRIEFS boys returning with Close Encounters, and five time Helpmann Award winner Paul Capsis performing in Tim Fountain’s Resident Alien – plus much, much more!

For starters – Brisbane Comedy Festival. More than 70 comedians all laying comical siege across three mighty venues – Brisbane Powerhouse, Brisbane City Hall and a new venue in SunPAC! Then, straight into Women of the World Festival (WOW), co-produced with Of One Mind and Southbank Centre London as part of Festival 2018, and featuring the massive international smash-hit firecracker of a show Hot Brown Honey. QSO’s ground-breaking WAVE Festival – the ultimate morphing of modern sounds, technology and talent – lands soon after, as does a season of

Our new initiative The Bridge, a $300k four-year program we’ve launched to support local performers and producers and invest in the creative community of Brisbane. Jamila Rizvi, Jessica Rudd and Laura Chalmers join Rebecca Levingston for a hilarious conversation navigating the turbulent waters of life with a newborn. After her son was born, Jamila Rizvi felt isolated, exhausted and confused. While desperately in love with her new baby, the world she'd known had disappeared overnight and so had her sense of self. Jamila's salvation came in the form of a letter. A dear friend, Clare Bowditch – who had been there herself – wrote to tell Jamila she would get through this. Her comforting words reassured Jamila that she was seen, that she was supported and that she was not alone. Now Jamila wants to pay it forward to the next generation of new mothers. Quiet Faith by David Williams From award-winning documentary theatre maker, David Williams comes a surprising journey into the world of the quietly, progressively faithful.

The place of Christian faith in Australian politics is often linked to conservatism and intolerance. Many members of the current Federal Government profess deep Christian beliefs and groups such as the Australian Christian Lobby loudly intervene in public policy debates.

Yet, new faith-based social movements actively campaign against government policies. VEIQIA21 by VOU Dance Fiji

Veiqia, as it is traditionally known, was a custom commonly bestowed on young Fijian women coming of age. The process involves the traditional tattooing of young women celebrating and acknowledging the initial stages of a young girl undergoing physical changes before or while entering womanhood. The piece reflects the once forgotten ritualistic aspect that held utmost importance in the lives of Fijian women, focusing specifically on how proudly celebrated menstruation was for young women then, and how unnecessarily stigmatized it is in todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s society. The Veiqia was symbolic, signifying strength, resilience, resourcefulness and creativity in the lives of these women. WITH IMAGINARY THEATRE With a new host artist every three months, this free kids’ event takes place weekly on a Tuesday during the school term and is the perfect place for you and your family to relax, play and learn. Little Artists at Play is a creative play workshop series for children aged 0–5 years. Each week* a host-artist from Imaginary Theatre collaborates with the group on unique and engaging activities. From theatre and visual art to dance, music and digital media, there is something to inspire everyone.

Until 27 Mar, theatre maker and performer Robbie O’Brien gets kids to work together to design and play with their robot selves in WeBe Robot Lab. From 17 Apr–26 June, Sue Loveday returns with her new experience, The Exploring Drawing. Little artists will adventure through this interactive black and white drawing of the Australian Bush. Along the way they meet the very special animals who live there and explore drawing with them.

52 THE BRIDGE

The Bridge is a Brisbane Powerhouse and Brisbane City Council $300k four-year funding initiative designed to support local performers and producers in order to grow the presenting capacity of Brisbane’s performing arts sector. The initiative is divided across four financial years, with selected shows aligning to Brisbane Powerhouse’s programming vision of being a home for living art, ideas and experiences. In its first year, 2017/18, The Bridge is dedicated to supporting festival artists in Wonderland Festival and MELT. In the subsequent years, 2018–2021, The Bridge will support projects across the genres of independent musical theatre, digital and tech-based artists, and circus. Created in response to Brisbane City Council’s Creative Sector Survey, The Bridge will give Brisbane creatives the necessary time and support to present shows of a professional standard. LOCATION CITYCAT: Bewteen mid-April and late 2018, the New Farm Park ferry terminal will be closed due to an upgrade. BUS: The 195 and 196 stop at New Farm Park. Take a short, enjoyable stroll along the riverside path from the CityCat jetty. If you want to give your legs a bit more of a workout you can catch the 199 bus, which stops on Merthyr Road within walking distance via Lamington Street. BICYCLES: It’s cool to be green! Bike racks are located outside the Stores Building (beside the car park) and Brisbane Powerhouse. A CityCycle station is also located at the entrance to the car park on Lamington Street.

TAXI: If you need a taxi it’s as easy as using the free taxi phones located in the foyer opposite the box office. Our collect and drop off area is in the car park beside the Stores Building. CAR: We have 140 free car parks on site via Lamington Street. After 4pm a link road opens to New Farm Park where there are more parking spots available. The parking fills up very quickly during busy shows so if you do plan on driving we recommend that you arrive early and have dinner at one of our two restaurants before the show. WHEELCHAIR: Wheelchair parking is available on-site via Lamington Street with lift access from the car park level beside the Stores Building. Please notify the box office of any special needs when booking.
