Lord Mayor’s Message With an exciting array of performances on offer, you’ll be spoilt for choice this season at Brisbane Powerhouse. If you’re after a real laugh, head along to Brisbane Comedy Festival where you’ll see a variety of comedians including household names like Wil Anderson, Fiona O’Loughlin, Lawrence Mooney and Celia Paquola. Featuring over 70 comedians, expanding across three venues, this is Australia’s fastest growing comedy festival.
Not sure what to do over the school holiday period? Brisbane Powerhouse will have your jaws on the floor, hooting for more with non-stop acrobatic comedy in Children Are Stinky. Bring the whole family along to experience this action-packed extravaganza. In May, the fourth annual MELT: Festival of Queer Arts and Culture will celebrate our LGBTI+ communities with a dazzling program of theatre, comedy, music, cabaret, visual arts and more. And, if that wasn’t enough, Writers+Ideas will be bursting with activity featuring authors Tim Winton, Jamila Rizvi, Kitty Flanagan and Hugh Mackay – just to name a few.
With a program this jam-packed, I encourage everyone to experience something new at Brisbane Powerhouse this Autumn – whether to see a premiere performance, soak up the festival atmosphere or simply enjoy a meal with breathtaking river views.

I mean – check out the variety we be offering in Autumn!
MELT: Festival of Queer Arts and Culture returns for its fourth year, opening on IDAHOT Day with an extraordinary program that includes the BRIEFS boys returning with Close Encounters, and five time Helpmann Award winner Paul Capsis performing in Tim Fountain’s Resident Alien – plus much, much more!
For starters – Brisbane Comedy Festival. More than 70 comedians all laying comical siege across three mighty venues – Brisbane Powerhouse, Brisbane City Hall and a new venue in SunPAC! Then, straight into Women of the World Festival (WOW), co-produced with Of One Mind and Southbank Centre London as part of Festival 2018, and featuring the massive international smash-hit firecracker of a show Hot Brown Honey. QSO’s ground-breaking WAVE Festival – the ultimate morphing of modern sounds, technology and talent – lands soon after, as does a season of
Finally, something really close to our heart. Our new initiative The Bridge, a $300k four-year program we’ve launched to support local performers and producers and invest in the creative community of Brisbane. Hot Brown Honey Hot Brown Honey turns up the heat with lashings of sass and a hot pinch of empowerment in the smash-hit, genre defying, firecracker of a show that’s taken the world by storm. Steeped in the Word of The Mother and packing a punch of Hip Hop politics, Hot Brown Honey will make you laugh until you cry, clap until your hands bleed, dance in the aisles and shake every part of what your mama gave you. With lighting, music and costume set to ignite the change we want to be, Hot Brown Honey is an extraordinary production that spins tradition on its head, going above and beyond to challenge boundaries and embrace resilience. Hot Brown Honey is unapologetically fierce, defiantly shattering preconceptions in an explosion of colour, culture and controversy.
“Phenomenal, powerful, and an absolute joy.” THE PERTH PROJECT
“Gleefully challenges stereotypes of sex and race with a full grin, bared chest and raised middle finger.”

Jamila Rizvi:
On Motherhood with Jessica Rudd and Laura Chalmers
Jamila Rizvi, Jessica Rudd and Laura Chalmers join Rebecca Levingston for a hilarious conversation navigating the turbulent waters of life with a newborn. After her son was born, Jamila Rizvi felt isolated, exhausted and confused. While desperately in love with her new baby, the world she'd known had disappeared overnight and so had her sense of self. Jamila's salvation came in the form of a letter. A dear friend, Clare Bowditch – who had been there herself – wrote to tell Jamila she would get through this. Her comforting words reassured Jamila that she was seen, that she was supported and that she was not alone. Now Jamila wants to pay it forward to the next generation of new mothers. Coming from writers with a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences, no two stories in The Motherhood are alike – but all are generous, compassionate and deeply honest. Hugh Mackay: Australia Reimagined Esteemed social researcher and author Hugh Mackay joins ABC Radio’s Cathy Van Extel for an unflinching look at why Australia’s unprecedented run of economic growth has failed to deliver a more harmonious society.
Hugh revolutionised our understanding of Australian society 25 years ago, with the publication of Reinventing Australia. Now, with some perceptive observations and radical proposals, he does it again. Individualism is rampant. Income inequality is growing. Public
education is under-resourced. The gender revolution is stalling. We no longer trust our major institutions or our political leaders. We are more socially fragmented, more anxious, more depressed, more overweight, more medicated, deeper in debt and increasingly addicted – whether to our digital devices, drugs, pornography or ‘stuff’. Yet Hugh Mackay remains optimistic. In an uplifting and energising evening he offers some compelling proposals for
a more compassionate and socially cohesive Australia. Books will be on sale and available for signing on the night. PRESENTED BY BRISBANE POWERHOUSE DATE

THEATRE 17
Quiet Faith by David Williams From award-winning documentary theatre maker, David Williams comes a surprising journey into the world of the quietly, progressively faithful.
The place of Christian faith in Australian politics is often linked to conservatism and intolerance. Many members of the current Federal Government profess deep Christian beliefs and groups such as the Australian Christian Lobby loudly intervene in public policy debates.
Yet, new faith-based social movements actively campaign against government policies. The spectacle of religious leaders undertaking non-violent acts of civil disobedience, including prayer vigils in the offices of Christian politicians, has captured the imaginations of many. Generated from hours of interviews with Christian Australians, Quiet Faith offers a beautiful, immersive and
heartfelt portrait of the very different ways that faith can underpin civic life. PRESENTED BY BRISBANE POWERHOUSE IN ASSOCIATION WITH ALTERNATIVE FACTS DATE

DANCE 19
VEIQIA21 by VOU Dance Fiji
Veiqia, as it is traditionally known, was a custom commonly bestowed on young Fijian women coming of age. The process involves the traditional tattooing of young women celebrating and acknowledging the initial stages of a young girl undergoing physical changes before or while entering womanhood. The piece reflects the once forgotten ritualistic aspect that held utmost importance in the lives of Fijian women, focusing specifically on how proudly celebrated menstruation was for young women then, and how unnecessarily stigmatized it is in today’s society. The Veiqia was symbolic, signifying strength, resilience, resourcefulness and creativity in the lives of these women. Today, the question that comes into play is, what is a woman’s rite of passage? For one night only, Coupling takes the great love duets of the 70s, 80s and 90s and completely reclaims them for same sex couples. Barbra and Neil, Kylie and Jason, Dolly and Kenny – the amazing songs we grew up with finally being sung the way you always imagined them in your mind.
Performed by Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra and special guest vocalists, Coupling is something to share with your special someone (or that person you want to get frisky with); a night of great music, pop sensationalism and most importantly, love. Remember – it takes two to tango.

BARE
From his early years as an androgynous nude model in 1930’s London, to finding fame as the first to speak so openly about life as a gay man, there was no-one quite like Quentin Crisp.
Provocative, fresh, and utterly honest, BARE is a contemporary pop rock LGBTI+ musical following a group of boarding school students grappling with their sexuality.
In Tim Fountain's Resident Alien, the legendary author of The Naked Civil Servant opens the door to his famously filthy New York apartment for an unforgettable heart to heart about life as only he knows it.
With a stellar cast of over twenty of Brisbane’s best young performers and featuring ABC’s Jenny Woodward, BARE will roar from the stage with its captivating score, youthful energy and heart pounding lyrics.

Cassandra and the Boy Doll
The Measure of a Man
Cassandra is a woman, she always has been. She transitioned, and now it's time to put away her 'boy doll'; her constructed male identity. Unfortunately, Cassandra is discovering that taking a scalpel to parts of your personhood is more difficult than expected.
Stare into the heart of one man’s sexual anxieties as he draws out stories shrouded in years of embarrassment and shame. Told in a humourous, raw and deeply candid style, The Measure of a Man perfectly blends comedy and drama
