LORD MAYOR’S With diverse programming from theatre to music plus film, visual arts and more, including plenty of free programming, this is your chance to enjoy what’s on offer at Brisbane’s favourite arts venue this summer. I am excited about the sounds of soul and pop legend Sam Cooke that will echo throughout Brisbane Powerhouse. With well-known songs including Wonderful World and Twistin’ the Night Away, the much-anticipated performance Songs and Times of Sam Cooke will take the stage in February. Also taking centre stage from late February is Brisbane Comedy Festival. In 2019, more than 75 comedians across genres including stand-up, improvisation, musical and sketch comedy will help celebrate ten years of Brisbane’s funniest festival. Now with hubs at Brisbane City Hall, SunPAC and Brisbane Powerhouse, Brisbane Comedy Festival will have the whole city in stitches. I’m extremely proud of the many free events hosted by Brisbane Powerhouse for all to enjoy. Powerkids: Little Artists at Play continues to keep the curious minds of thousands of under 5’s busy, with a new host artist each school term encouraging play and discovery every Tuesday morning. Plus you can experience the best local bands at Sunday afternoon’s Livespark and emerging comedians on Friday with Knockoff. Add in the Farmers Markets each Saturday, and Brisbane Powerhouse is your second home this summer.

Graham Quirk Lord Mayor

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Alright – nobody panic. You might notice some changes at Brisbane Powerhouse and that includes this new look guide! We’re still doing the same awesome things but just mixing it up a bit. They do say a change is as good as a holiday. Which is completely untrue, and only said by people who don’t want you to take a week off work. Plus, things that are happening! So Frenchy So Chic is back, with new-gen siren Clara Luciani, and we’re presenting two fantastic international works of theatre featuring UK writer and director Shôn Dale-Jones – I saw these in Edinburgh, and they are absolutely fantastic. Oh, and in my long unrequested return to directing, I’ll be working on one of Broadway’s great musicals Sweet Charity, starring Naomi Price. Come and see it, and be very gentle to the director! So, I guess that’s all the shows that… wait! There’s more! Internationally acclaimed local songstress Emma Dean brings her unique style back to the Brisbane Powerhouse stage with Broken Romantics: A Unicorn’s Quest for Love. In From Johnny to Jack, another local favourite Luke Kennedy takes on Whispering Jack – an unmissable concert about the making of icon John Farnham. Plus there’s the Power to the Pixel exhibition, which showcases the best pixel artists working globally, a nostalgic and mind-bending art style inspired by retro games and technology. Nostalgic and mind blowing. That sounds like us!

SONGS & Times of

A change is gonna come Forging a link between soul and pop, the music and unforgettable genius of legendary ‘King of Soul’, Sam Cooke will be performed live by Australian soul singer and performer, Gary Pinto and live band. Credited by many as the creator of soul music, Cooke began his career in gospel bands, later moving to ‘secular music’ and creating a sound that broke the colour divide. More than sharp suits, luxury cars, generous women and earthy language, Cooke’s crystal-clear, velvety-smooth voice had the melodies to match and revolutionised a new genre. Cooke broke race and religious barriers in the 1950s and 1960s and became one of the best known African Americans in the world. With 30 US Top 40 hits, plus an extra three posthumously, Songs and Times of Sam Cooke features some of his best known classics, including You Send Me, A Change Is Gonna Come, Cupid, Chain Gang, Wonderful World and more.

SO FRENCHY SO CHIC

So Frenchy So Chic returns to Brisbane Powerhouse with the luminous Paris-based musician, Clara Luciani. Sultry, sexy and highly charismatic, this Marseillesborn artist is cut from the same cloth as So Frenchy So Chic icons like Françoise Hardy, Jane Birkin, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Émilie Simon; and not just in her kohl-rimmed eyes, vintage styling and heavyfringed brunette looks.

(thanks to her love of cool basslines) and a stage presence that is nothing but magnetic. This self-confessed pleasurist is heralding a new revolution in French pop and will get you dancing to her alluring and contagious beats.

Former member of So Frenchy So Chic alumni, La Femme, Clara’s indie-like sound carries a heavy, danceable groove

A Unicorn’s Quest for Love Emma Dean has been writing and collecting songs about heartbreak since 1997. In Broken Romantics: A Unicorn’s Quest For Love, Dean has drawn many of these songs together to make a magical ‘mixed tape’ of broken romantic memories, with each song a unique story told through the bizarre and enchanting lens of this selfconfessed ‘f*%king unicorn’. A recent smash hit at the 2018 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Emma and her Broken Romantics band, with astonishing physical theatre performer Jamie Kendall, will delight you with a glittering explosion of music and mischief that will have you feeling empowered – cracks and all – and ready to take on the world!

Wolfgang Muthspiel, Slava Grigoryan and Ralph Towner Three icons of the guitar world are bringing their incredible artistry to Brisbane Powerhouse.

Wolfgang Muthspiel (Austria), Slava Grigoryan (Australia) and Ralph Towner (USA) are highly respected worldwide for their contributions to the guitar oeuvre, be it jazz, classical or world music. Coming together in 2005 for a one-off trio tour in Australia, Wolfgang, Slava and Ralph felt an instant personal and musical connection. Fifteen years, two CDs and countless tours later, they are returning to Australia performing new works penned by Towner and Muthspiel, as well as selections from their previous recordings, From a Dream and Travel Guide. The aural landscapes created by this master guitar trio seem at times ‘orchestral’. Perhaps it is the sheer beauty of the compositions combined with the variety of instruments that gives the ensemble its harmonically broad sound spectrum. This is a must-see performance!

ME ROBIN HOOD

Direct from the UK, The Duke by Shôn Dale-Jones is a semiautobiographical tale of Shôn, his mum, and their complex relationship with a china figure of the Duke of Wellington that his late Dad bought, cherished, and kept in a shoe box under the bed.

Funny, poignant and playful, this one-man show weaves together the tragi-comic fate of a family heirloom, the quandary of a scriptwriter stretching his integrity and an unfolding disaster as thousands of children flee their homes. Blending fantasy and reality, this playful show gently challenges our priorities in a world full of crisis. The Duke received The Scotsman’s Fringe First Award in Edinburgh in 2016 and has been produced in aid of the Save the Children’s Child Refugee Crisis Appeal.

Me & Robin Hood is the second in a series of solo shows from Hoipolloi’s awardwinning Artistic Director, Shôn DaleJones and questions the value of art and the power of story.

This is a one-man-play with heart and meaning about Shôn’s longstanding relationship with his favourite fictional friend that seeks to raise money for charity. Shôn first met Robin Hood in the autumn of 1975, as a seven-year-old-boy and they have been good mates ever since. Robin’s been going crazy recently about the direction our world is heading. He can’t believe there hasn’t been a bigger reaction to all the madness since Brexit, and Donald Trump moving into The White House. This show is his idea. He’s convinced we need to change the story of money and share the opportunity we’ve been given if we really want to do something about the growing gap between rich and poor.

We love the

IN BRISBANE POWERHOUSE

27

From theatre, music, dance and visual arts we’ve connected with thousands of people this past year; celebrating the vibrant local arts scene, and bringing acclaimed artists of international repute direct to your doorstep. With more than 350 shows and 1300 performances annually, plus major festivals throughout the year, Brisbane Powerhouse’s genuine commitment to growing and enriching Queensland’s arts community is undisputed. Sometimes we’re just a platform, such as when Hannah Gadsby premiered Nanette, but for others it’s something deeper, such as the Briefs Factory’s Close Encounters, which we supported through its creative development and premiere, before watching it play the world and eventually return back here for a sell-out season. The past year has been truly extraordinary. The Australian Performing Arts Market brought international performers and arts workers to our city; Brisbane Comedy Festival saw record attendance; our reputation as a leader in the digital artscape saw the Australian debut performance of Hakanaï alongside the VR theatre tech thriller Frogman, a show Brisbane Powerhouse supported from its creation. Wonderland Festival and MELT: Festival of Queer Arts and Culture further emphasise our investment in local artists, with Brisbane Powerhouse giving venue, marketing and 100 per cent of net box office directly to those creating and delivering new experiences.

We’ve had 54 world premieres here in the last 12 months and, most importantly, the number of local artists presented at Brisbane Powerhouse has grown from 737 in 2013 to 1408 last year, an increase of 91%. To keep in mind how many that is – it's 15 symphony orchestras. 25 productions of Aida. It's the cast of Beautiful – 59 times over. But we certainly don’t do all of this alone. It’s thanks to our many generous and inspired supporters. It’s you, the legendary local organisations that also truly believe in creating opportunities for the many talented artists in our backyard as well as bringing the world’s best to Brisbane. Soon we’ll celebrate 20 years of being a live performance space for creatives – especially for those that want to try something new, those that break the rules and lead. It’s in the building’s DNA. Brisbane Powerhouse has always been a home for people who see things differently. We’re anything but normal, but always warm and real. This is what sets us apart – because audiences and artists will always be at the centre of what we do.

Plus our new funding initiative created to support local producers and performers – The Bridge – has seen the development of new works including Casus Circus’ Chasing Smoke with more to come!

If you have a dinner or performance reservation, we encourage you to arrive 30–40 minutes early to give yourself enough time to find a park. Please note that if you park at New Farm Park, the gate will close at 11pm. The New Farm Ferry Terminal is located approximately 200 metres from Brisbane Powerhouse, with services every 30 minutes until midnight. The taxi collect and drop off area is located in the car park beside the Stores Building. A free taxi phone is located in the foyer, opposite the Box Office.
