02 WELCOME

Lord Mayor’s Message With such diverse programming, there’ll be a spring in your step as you make your way to Brisbane Powerhouse this season! From stunning wildlife imagery, wacky children’s shows and musical mavens, to new dance works, illustrious writers, comedic legends and the carnival that is Wonderland Festival, there’s something for everyone. For the first time, the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, direct from the Natural History Museum in London, will take pride of place at Brisbane Powerhouse. With a focus on promoting the discovery, understanding and responsible enjoyment of the natural world, these evocative images are a must-see.

September sees Brisbane Festival present two world premieres at Brisbane Powerhouse. Dust is a contemporary dance work from Dancenorth, while Man With the Iron Neck sees physical theatre tell a true and heart-wrenching Australian story of family grief. The thought provoking and entertaining Writers+Ideas series shines the spotlight on truly remarkable authors and their stories. This season, we’re so lucky to have, among others, the witty Annabel Crabb, inspirational lifestyle author Taryn Brumfitt and her new book, Embrace Yourself, and the mighty Eric Idle from Monty Python fame.

Brisbane Powerhouse is also celebrating musical women with the inaugural Australian Women in Music Awards and the return of Women in Voice celebrating their 26th anniversary season. And for the young, and young at heart, The Gizmo is a fun theatre show, based on Paul Jennings' best-selling book that will most certainly take the boredom out of the school holidays!

WELCOME 03

Artistic Director’s Message I'm interrupting the traditional broadcast of "what's on this season" to instead talk about things that have been on my mind... I've been at Brisbane Powerhouse for five years now, and I've been thinking a lot recently about what makes this place special. And different. I mean, people broke in here to make art! They snuck in, to paint on the walls and to dance. And even now, more people come here just to hang out and meet friends than people who only see shows. A lot of arts centres are just car parks and dark auditoriums, but Brisbane Powerhouse is much more; it's a welcoming embrace, a specialness of place where you can truly be yourself among others.

If the Brisbane Powerhouse building is the bones, our beating heart is the shared experiences, people and connections that we continue to attract and nurture. Trusting us to tell personal stories through performance, be it theatre, comedy, music or dance; hanging with mates over a beer; expressing undying love surrounded by your nearest and dearest; inspiring creativity in work colleagues. We bring people together. In a world that's getting smaller and yet more disconnected, it's shared experiences that unite us.

So if you haven't visited us in a while, it's time to see, share and immerse yourself in all the real-life experiences Brisbane Powerhouse has to offer. You might just make some new stories yourself...

DIGITAL POWERHOUSE 07

Brisbane Powerhouse champions the creative, the new and the irreverent. We have always been future-focused, and our commitment to the contemporary has meant a deep dive into the fusion of creativity and technology, such as the latest in virtual reality, augmented reality and other digital technologies. This spring, we're extremely proud to present the astounding new show that is Frogman, a pioneering integration of live performance and virtual reality. Premiering at Edinburgh Fringe last year, the work has been described as a ‘360 heightening of the senses.’ We’re the home of the Brisbane Virtual Reality Meetup, and in partnership with the Brisbane International Game Developers Association, we proudly present Game On 423, which gives gamers, creators and players the unique opportunity to learn first-hand about the vibrant gaming industry that Brisbane boasts. We love being the home of The Australian Virtual Reality Film Festival, presenting the next generation of screen storytelling. And we’re supporting more new work with Afterlife, a collaboration between theatre makers, coders and technology artists in a first for Australian theatre – coming to a stage near you soon!

In another trans-disciplinary project, we’re excited about the new work from Vulcana Women’s Circus and WaW Dance on show in September. As If No One Is Watching not only features the spectacle of circus and rhythm of dance but also includes interactive installations augmented by smartphones. It’s about the creators too, not just the end product, so we’re nurturing the future leaders of the industry by showcasing the work of emerging digital entrepreneurs and artists. FUTURE ART | TECH | DESIGN INCUBATOR presents works in progress by QUT students before their reveal at the prestigious Ars Electronica Festival in Austria, the largest media arts festival in the world. And look out for Power to the Pixel, a celebration of digital art in a new immersive exhibition on show this summer. Combined, all these events create DIGITAL POWERHOUSE, a program showcasing the sharp edge of modern digital culture. We’re proud to lead the way in this field, alongside our inspired partners including QUT, with a very deliberate discovery of digital art forms. And it’s you we’re taking on the adventure. Immerse yourself in new worlds; a place created by others to share.

Frogman A coming-of-age thriller experienced in VR headsets and live theatre. It’s 2018, a police officer arrives at Meera's coral laboratory. Meera is interrogated about Ashleigh Richardson, a 13-year-old girl who went missing in 1995. It's 1995, and Meera is 11. It’s her first sleepover with her best friends, Lily and Shaun. Cassette recordings from the radio and Sega Mega Drive distract them from theories about Ashleigh’s disappearance. Outside, on the Great Barrier Reef, police divers are on a searchand-rescue mission by torchlight. At the crossroads of contemporary performance and cutting-edge tech, Frogman explores the fragility of childhood imagination. Audiences experience the 1995 storyline in a 360 degree VR environment. From awardwinning UK company curious directive, and developed with school children across Brisbane, this coming-of-age thriller integrates virtual reality with live performance. Frogman will sweep you up in its wake.

Dancenorth/Liminal Spaces (Aus) A world premiere from Dancenorth, the new powerhouse of Australian dance that gave us the multi award-winning Attractor at last year’s Brisbane Festival.

Dust takes a deep and daring dive into how – through the lottery of birth – we inherit the architecture of restriction and opportunity. How do we agitate and illuminate the engineering of our own existence?

Dust is an audacious new collaboration created by Dancenorth’s Artistic Director Kyle Page and Associate Artistic Director Amber Haines, featuring live violin by Canada’s Jessica Moss (Thee Silver Mt Zion) and an architecturallydesigned set by the awardwinning Liminal Studio.

Man with the Iron Neck

Legs on the Wall (Aus) A new work from Australia’s leading physical theatre company tells the story of an Australian family – three Aboriginal kids from a small town – and how two choose to survive when one is lost.

When Ash loses his best friend Bear to suicide, he becomes obsessed with early 20th century circus star The Great Peters – AKA ‘Man With The Iron Neck’ – whose most famous trick saw him jump off bridges with a rope

tied around his neck, and live. The Great Peters embodied both life and death, but in the end what he promises is impossible. Based on elements of Co-director Josh Bond’s own story, this daring and delicate show brings together Co-director Gavin Robins, writer/ actor Ursula Yovich and some of Australia’s best artists to weave together text, aerial performance, and ambitious video design.

The War on History The Chaser & The Shovel Following sold-out runs in Sydney and Melbourne, The War on History is based on The Chaser Quarterly & Shovel's latest book, The Completely True History of Australia and is the least reliable, but most hilarious account of Australian history.

by having a bunch of slightly younger white men ruin your night as they present sketches, pranks, quizzes and a 150 page PowerPoint presentation on all the best moments in Australian history. You’ll be joined on this journey by Australia’s least eminent historians, including The Chaser’s Charles Firth, The Shovel’s James Schloeffel and Australia's leading game show host Mark Humphries.

27 BORN AT BRISBANE POWERHOUSE 29

Born at Brisbane Powerhouse This spring, we're proud to be part of a very unique partnership for us – the world premiere of Neon Tiger at La Boite Theatre Company. In 2014, we approached the Australia Council with a proposal: to fund the commissioning, development and presentation of two new Australian musicals, all created by Queensland creative teams. The first was a mainstage show, the fantastically successful Joh for PM, seen at the Powerhouse Theatre last year. The second was intended to be a chamber work, so we decided to send three female artists, Julia-Rose Lewis, Gillian Cosgriff and Kat Henry to Thailand for a ten day research trip, to see if inspiration would strike. Yes – the idea that three Brisbanites would go to Bangkok for ten days for research was a tough one to explain to the Australia Council ... But a magnificent show came from it. We developed and presented a workshop production last year at the Visy Theatre, and now we're a proud partner of its mainstage world premiere. Neon Tiger is a personal story of love and discovery; fast, frivolous and continuously flashing, the alwaysawake playground of a tourist mecca in Bangkok paints the scene for this roaring new Australian play with songs about the adult gap-year you never knew you needed. We'd heartily encourage you to see Neon Tiger at La Boite, from Sat 27 Oct–Sat 17 Nov, and support this great new Brisbane work.

PechaKucha Night Brisbane

Politics in the Pub

Immerse yourself in a mecca for creative expression, a stage for designers, artists, architects and other creatives to present their stories.

Politics in the Pub is a free, Q&A style debate which tackles the most pressing contemporary issues for both Australia and the world.

The patented format (20 slides, 20 seconds per slide) has become a worldwide phenomenon, keeping the presentations lively, interesting and to the point.

Each topic is addressed by a panel of experts from a range of disciplines. Following a panel discussion is the opportunity for the audience to pose their questions directly to the speakers.

This October, PechaKucha will be presented in collaboration with Brisbane Open House, a free festival that celebrates Brisbane’s architecture and offers behind-the-scenes access to buildings across the city. PRESENTED BY BRISBANE POWERHOUSE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PECHAKUCHA DATE
