Right here in little ‘ole Brisbane, you can see some of the world’s best creators and performers on show at Brisbane Powerhouse. We’re bringing the world to your doorstep with unique, contemporary performances that agitate, move and inspire. Performances that can’t be seen elsewhere in Queensland and in many cases, across Australia. I’m particularly excited about The Humours of Bandon, an award-winning theatre piece direct from Ireland. Plus there’s UK comedians Joe Lycett and James Acaster cementing us as the home of comedy, with shows on the back of the highly-anticipated Brisbane Comedy Festival taking over the city this March. There’s also the British podcast The Allusionist Live, and an immersive look into some of the most remote corners of the globe with the Banff Mountain Film Festival and the Ocean Film Festival World Tour. The Festival of Tibet brings the art, music and philosophy of this intriguing country to life right here in Brisbane, while American guitar idol Jeff Tweedy of American band Wilco fame hits the stage. Ditch the travel plans and just come to Brisbane Powerhouse instead! I’m also extremely proud of our strong collaborations with local creators and legends that see’s the extraordinary Brisbane coming-ofage story in Magpie on stage and the return of the illustrious jazz tour de force, Vince Jones. Our international reputation for inventiveness, freshness and creativity is your oyster! See you in the theatres (or at the bar!).

Kris Stewart Artistic Director

As the days get shorter and cooler, Brisbane Powerhouse has the perfect antidote to the change of season. With Brisbane at the forefront of creative industries in Australia, Brisbane Powerhouse is the lens through which locals and tourists alike can be inspired by a diverse variety of performance and art, be it comedy, music, dance, theatre or lively school holiday shows. This season there’s plenty for the whole family to enjoy! I’m particularly looking forward to welcoming jazz legend Vince Jones back to Brisbane to perform audience favourites and new works. The Festival of Tibet also returns with hands-on workshops, philosophy and more, while Supercell Festival of Contemporary Dance will shine a light on local choreographers and dancers as well as attract a stellar lineup of international artists to our city. Speaking of international artists, once again Brisbane Powerhouse has attracted overseas acts that you can’t see anywhere else in Queensland with the award-winning theatre work The Humours of Bandon, direct from Ireland. Brisbane Powerhouse also takes centre stage as a creative hub for Curiocity Brisbane; a citywide immersive experience featuring interactive installations that fuse science and creativity and featuring an all-day music event, Curious Music at Brisbane Powerhouse on 30 March. I encourage you to be part of all that Brisbane Powerhouse has to offer!

THE

On the eve of the Irish Open championship we meet Annie, a 16 year old Dubliner, as she charts us through the various successes and disappointments of her Irish Dancing life. We share her mind numbing commitment and burning desire to win the Irish Open title. Will she win and, if so, in what way? From the confines of every parochial hall in Ireland, Irish Dancing champions are churned out at a massive rate. Medals and cups build up in drawing rooms and Riverdance swells a national pride, but the public aren’t privy to the blood, sweat and tears that pave the way to the first place podium.

magpie by elise greig

Mordecai, a novelist dealing with a bad review, returns to her family’s Brisbane home for the first time in decades following the death of her father. The home conjures echoes from her distant past: the muggy summers, the smell of rotting mangoes, and the perpetual arguments between her Romani mother and father. When she discovers her old journal; an innocent tapestry of ideas, drawings, and imaginings; Mordecai is drawn back to 1961 and a longabandoned investigation into her parents’ unhappiness. Pushed along by her childhood friend Splinter, Mordecai sets out to uncover the long dormant secrets that cursed her family and led to her leaving home at 15. Spanning from young love to aging cynicism, Magpie is a coming-of-age story that will thrill and delight like lemonade ice-blocks and a swim on a hot day!

LOCATION Brisbane Powerhouse is located on the Brisbane River, adjacent to New Farm Park – one of Brisbane’s oldest and grandest parks. Here are just a few tips on how you can travel to Brisbane Powerhouse. Brisbane Powerhouse is very conveniently located on the Newstead-New Farm Bikeway, which connects to the city centre via the New Farm Riverwalk. There is a CityCycle bike hire station outside Brisbane Powerhouse and docking stations in Fortitude Valley to connect you to the Citytrain network. You can also find secure bike racks outside the Stores and Turbine buildings. The 195 and 196 bus services stop at the end of Brunswick Street at Oxlade Drive, on the East side of New Farm Park. The 199 bus stops at Merthyr Road and Hawthorne Street. Both stops are a short walk away from Brisbane Powerhouse. We have more than 100 free car parks, however, during busy times we open a one way link road that connects to New Farm Park that provides an additional 200 car parks. If you have a dinner or performance reservation, we encourage you to arrive 30–40 minutes early to give yourself enough time to find a park. Please note that if you park at New Farm Park, the gate will close at 11pm. The New Farm Ferry Terminal is located approximately 200 metres from Brisbane Powerhouse, with services every 30 minutes until midnight. The taxi collect and drop off area is located in the car park beside the Stores Building. A free taxi phone is located in the foyer, opposite the Box Office.
