MELT: Festival of Queer Arts and Culture 2019 Guide

Page 1

At a recent LGBTIQ+ event, I slipped and soaked a stranger in wine… I hurriedly apologised as he laughed and said “Darling – enjoy!”. People offered help and he offered a hug before returning to revel in the uplifting ardour surrounding us. Community, I realised, flourishes in these fleeting interactions. It is not found in labels, but in the empowerment that comes from embracing our tribe. Our differences, our slip-ups, our sameness. That’s MELT. I’ve created work in Brisbane for over 15 years and in shaping this year’s Festival it was paramount that the program reflect the brilliant, daring artists we have here. I’m thrilled to see the pages of this guide resplendent with diverse local projects as well as engaging voices from interstate and overseas who we welcome into our home. No two nights are the same as the venue explodes in a vibrant celebration for everyone. Brisbane, darling – enjoy! Emily Gilhome, Guest Director

MELT: Festival of Queer Arts and Culture celebrates five mighty fine years in 2019! It started with an idea, giving Queensland an LGBTIQ+ cultural festival the equal of anything interstate, and it has grown into that and more; a highly-anticipated and heartfelt celebration of all things Queer. MELT is one of our most rewarding festivals, an open platform to express the queer experience within a safe and welcoming space. It’s the diversity of artform, the sharing of intimate stories and the connection to community that makes this so unique and special. It is an honest and authentic experience, told by Queer artists to LGBTIQ+ and ally audiences alike. To our many collaborators, including YOU, our MELT devotees – thank you! The simple act of you being a part of this means so much to us, and enables us to do what we do best – putting on stupendous shows, exhibitions and talks, and supporting burgeoning artists through a safe platform for new works and ideas. See you at MELT! Kris Stewart, Brisbane Powerhouse Artistic Director

— WELCOME —

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to MELT: Festival of Queer Arts and Culture. This highly-anticipated annual festival continues to grow, and in 2019 celebrates five successful years at Brisbane Powerhouse – Council’s premier venue for arts and culture. Celebrating the LGBTIQ+ community and showcasing an inclusive Brisbane, MELT’s glittering lineup provides a unique opportunity for everyone to proudly connect through theatre, talks, music and more. One of Brisbane’s greatest strengths is that we respect and embrace diverse backgrounds and experiences. I hope you take the time to enjoy the events on offer at MELT this year. It is one of the many ways in which my administration is delivering on our commitment to create more to see and do in Brisbane.

Welcome to Brisbane for MELT – a unique curated festival that showcases, encourages interaction with, and celebrates queer art, culture and experiences from multiple community and artistic perspectives. The Queensland Government is proud to support this event through Tourism and Events Queensland’s Destination Events Program – because it creates jobs in tourism. For those visiting Brisbane for the event, I encourage you to find time to explore the diverse tourism experiences on offer throughout the region.

Graham Quirk, Lord Mayor

The Hon Kate Jones MP Minister for Tourism Industry Development

Brisbane Powerhouse acknowledges and respects the ancestral homelands of the Turrbal, Ugarapul/Yugarapul and Jagera peoples, the Traditional Custodians of this country. We pay respect to all Elders past, present and emerging, and welcome all visiting Elders. — WELCOME —

In an explosion of energy, high camp, big notes and filthy humour; the Helpmann Award Nominated Reuben Kaye finally makes his Brisbane debut. With an acid wit and casual sensationalism that is simply delicious, Kaye is a dazzling phantasm of anachronistic showbiz – an explosion of sequins, lashes and teeth. A Matter of Time Project Heather Faulkner

A Matter of Time investigates the experiences of eight lesbians who lived in Queensland during the more socio-politically conservative midto-late twentieth century and how they interpret that experience to have informed their lives today. As the struggle for LGBTIQ+ rights continues, it is important to accrue a historical understanding of the experiences of those who found themselves existing outside of the ‘norm.’ Some led double-lives, some hid in remote pockets of far north Queensland, while others lived openly, in spite of implied consequences.
