“1977, the Bronx was burning down. No one really wanted to write that graffiti was an interesting thing. But I don’t want to shoot something that’s done with permission. It’s an outlaw art. That’s what makes it thrilling.” – Martha Cooper Techno-circus spectacles, an outrageous pop culture luminary, lyrical storytellers, international comedy celebrities, art that incited a counterculture, satirical wordsmiths plus much more. Only at Brisbane Powerhouse, the beating heart for the ground-breaking, inspirational and experimental.

Spring is in the air, and as Brisbane City Council’s most vibrant creative hub, Brisbane Powerhouse is giving you plenty of reasons to get out and about and explore what it is to live and play in our beautiful city. Warm up with the Writers+Ideas series of events, featuring a diverse range of storytellers from Cold Chisel lyricist Don Walker to musician and campaigner Archie Roach.

This season, the astounding images of New York’s Martha Cooper take over the building, alongside the works of our own heritage-listed aerosol art.

Plus as Brisbane’s indisputable home of comedy, the laughter will be heard across New Farm Park, as comedians Josh Thomas, Marty Sheargold and Daniel Sloss among others, take to the stage.

I’m also excited about our new music program MELT Vinyl, paying homage to the greatest LGBTIQ+ albums, singers and icons. More than a tribute concert, but seminal albums performed coverto-cover by local musicians including Culture Club’s Colour by Numbers and Melissa Etheridge’s self-titled album.

I’m also excited about the annual Wonderland Festival that returns to Brisbane Powerhouse for its sixth year, a unique end-of-year carnival of comedy, burlesque, circus, music, magic and more, including a selection of family-friendly shows.

Over the years we’ve seen many artists use Brisbane Powerhouse for their first foray onstage. We’re proud to support emerging talent and new works and I look forward to the new creation by Flipside Circus and transmedia performance makers Counterpilot. It’s also a delight to welcome Josh Thomas back to Brisbane Powerhouse after a six year hiatus on the stand-up circuit. Truth be told, he worked here once – but we won’t hold that against him! We’re also thrilled to welcome back award-winning stand-up star Daniel Sloss, cult filmmaker John Waters and the inimitable Jon Cleary with his unique New Orleans blend of funk and R&B. Fellow outlaws, be thrilled!

Our support of emerging and local artists continues with The Bridge, our Brisbane City Council funding initiative, in partnership with Brisbane Powerhouse, bringing the new multimedia circus work Statum to the stage, by our very own Flipside Circus. Plus, there’s the new River Hub now open, giving recreational river users and commercial vessels easy access to all on offer. From the wonderful food, coffee by the river, shows and art exhibitions… there’s something for everyone at our much-loved Brisbane Powerhouse.

In this exhibition, he inspiring works of New York photographer Martha Cooper will provide a unique insight into the life and graffiti culture of late 1970s and 80s New York City.

Street Shots 1970–2019 is an extensive body of Cooper’s work before and after NYC’s graffiti explosion, highlighting many forms of street creativity that are often overlooked by passers-by. As a staff photographer for the New York Post, Cooper began to document unsupervised children playing amidst the rubble and disintegrating neighbourhoods of New York (primarily the Lower East Side). This led to introductions to key writers’ in the graffiti scene and the start of a seminal body of works that captured a unique and exciting time in New York’s artistic culture. This free exhibition features photos taken over four decades in such diverse places as New York, Japan, Haiti, Baltimore, Berlin, Japan and Sao Paulo, and includes Martha’s personal mementos and collections.

Featuring the most fascinating writers and ideasmakers in conversation.

Writers+Ideas this season presents a cultural hive of music makers and ideas shakers taking a deep dive into their journey, creative process and general hysteria. From little things big things grow, and over the next few months we’re planting seeds of inspiration and nurturing the conversation to share big ideas. This group of storytellers will chat about how they got to where they are today, moments that defined them and the struggles they overcame. Joyously devious, honest and raw, moving and poetic, or stories of lugging a baby grand piano around the country, Writers+Ideas brings you face-to-face with some of the people who shaped our visual and musical landscape, and have used their talents to enrich our lives.

Don Walker: SONGS

In Conversation with Troy Cassar-Daley

For over forty years, Don Walker’s song writing has captured what it is to be Australian. Walker sits down with fellow Australian music icon, Troy Cassar-Daley to discuss Walker’s new book of collected lyrics, SONGS. From Cold Chisel to Catfish, Tex, Don & Charlie to his solo work, as well as many other writing collaborations, Walker’s words are poetic, moving and incisive. Including classics such as Khe Sanh, Flame Trees, Cheap Wine and Harry was a Bad Bugger, this collection reveals the breadth of Walker’s vision and the precision of his prose. These lyrics live on the page, with or without the memory of music. Interspersed with autobiographical sketches and anecdotes, SONGS is a must-have for fans of Walker’s brilliant, razor-sharp storytelling. Don’t miss this intimate and insightful discussion.

Clare Bowditch:

Speaking Frankly Tour In Conversation with Myf Warhurst Sitting down in conversation with ABC Radio’s Myf Warhurst, ARIA Award-winning singer and actress Clare Bowditch breaks down her inner critic and discusses her no-holdsbarred memoir, Your Own Kind of Girl. Clare Bowditch has always had a knack for telling stories. Through her music and performing, this beloved Australian artist has touched hundreds of thousands of lives. But what of the stories she used to tell herself? That 'real life' only begins once you're thin or beautiful, that good things only happen to other people. Your Own Kind of Girl reveals a childhood punctuated by grief, anxiety and compulsion and tells how these forces shaped Clare's life for better and for worse. This is a heart-breaking, wise and at times playful memoir. Clare's own story told raw and as it happened. A reminder that even on the darkest of nights, victory is closer than it seems.

The one and only John Waters returns to Australia with his world-acclaimed one-man show, filled with “comic anarchy” – the unique brand of outrageous insights and urbane wit that once earned the cult filmmaker and pop culture icon the moniker ‘The Pope of Trash’. As raconteur, Waters has been touring to adoring crowds around the world for nearly 15 years – though his insights are as sharp as ever. In his own words, “It is a show that I’m constantly updating. I try to make it filthier and dirtier.” Hysterical, shameless and revelatory, Waters serves up salty reflections on the world today, his camp obsessions and life lessons such as the downsides to being famous (none), all studded with cameos from his largerthan-life stars, from Divine and Mink Stole to Johnny Depp, Kathleen Turner and Patricia Hearst. Joyously devious, Waters elevates all that is trashy in life into a call to arms to filth followers everywhere.

Tell Me Why

In Conversation with Riverbend Books' Suzy Wilson An extraordinary in-conversation with Australian music legend Archie Roach and Riverbend Books’ Suzy Wilson about Roach’s powerful new memoir, Tell Me Why. Stolen child, seeker, teenage alcoholic, lover, father, musical and lyrical genius, and leader. Roach was only a few years old when he was forcibly removed from his family. Brought up by a series of foster parents until his early teens, his world imploded when he received a letter that spoke of a life he had no memory of. In this intimate, moving and often shocking memoir, Roach tells his stories of love and heartbreak, family and community, survival and renewal – and the healing power of music. Overcoming enormous odds to find his story and his people, Roach voices the joy, pain and hope he found on his path through song to become the legendary singersongwriter and storyteller that he is today – beloved by fans worldwide.

Here are just a few tips on how you can travel to Brisbane Powerhouse. Brisbane Powerhouse is very conveniently located on the Newstead-New Farm Bikeway, which connects to the city centre via the New Farm Riverwalk. There is a CityCycle bike hire station outside Brisbane Powerhouse and docking stations in Fortitude Valley to connect you to the Citytrain network. You can also find secure bike racks outside the Stores and Turbine buildings. The 195 and 196 bus services stop at the end of Brunswick Street at Oxlade Drive, on the East side of New Farm Park. The 199 bus stops at Merthyr Road and Hawthorne Street. Both stops are a short walk away from Brisbane Powerhouse. We have more than 100 free car parks, however, during busy times we open a one way link road that connects to New Farm Park that provides an additional 200 car parks. If you have a dinner or performance reservation, we encourage you to arrive 30–40 minutes early to give yourself enough time to find a park. Please note that if you park at New Farm Park, the gate will close at 11pm. The New Farm Ferry Terminal is located approximately 200 metres from Brisbane Powerhouse, with services every 30 minutes until midnight. The New Farm Park River Hub is located on the river directly in front of Brisbane Powerhouse with easy vessel access for tour boats, kayaks, canoes and recreational vessels. The taxi collect and drop off area is located in the car park beside the Stores Building. A free taxi phone is located in the foyer, opposite the Box Office.
