Well, finally we've all replaced the single sheets on our beds with quilts, and don't have to sleep with the air conditioner on anymore. So, why are we leaving our house and braving the mildly cool temperatures? How are we filling our evenings, now we know that Daenerys is the worst Aunt ever? Well, if you're still looking for strong women, you can come here and see Myf Warhurst, Zan Rowe and Yumi Stynes as they bring their popular ABC podcasts Ladies, We Need To Talk and Bang On to Brisbane stages. Or maybe you're more interested in the return of the legendary Queensland music event, Women in Voice, or the stylings of Clare Bowditch and Grace Knight? Maybe the kind of warmth you're looking for happens during MELT, our annual celebration of LGBTIQ+ arts and culture? Or maybe you just want the kind of event you can have a winter glass of red during, like when Tim Rogers returns with his musical mates, or while your kids are watching Possum Magic (my ideas of successful parenting may be different to yours)? Or maybe you just like leaving the house for big theatrical events, such as the world premiere of the Queensland musical Becoming Bill, or the opening of the Brisbane season of the NYC smash hit PUFFS, which tells the story of a famous boy magician at a certain school of magic? Whatever your motivations, the time is right to put on a (gasp) second layer of clothes and enjoy the real joys of winter – spending some time at Brisbane Powerhouse with your mates. Kris Stewart Artistic Director
Looking for something to warm your heart and soul this winter? Brisbane Powerhouse is turning up the heat this season with an exciting array of events that will have you celebrating, reflecting and laughing this winter. Featuring over 30 spectacular performances, events and discussions, the fifth annual MELT: Festival of Queer Arts and Culture will celebrate our LGBTIQ+ communities with a dazzling program of comedy, theatre, music, visual arts, talks and more. In July, witness our city’s best contemporary musical talent at The QUBE Effect Awards 2019. Now in its fifth year, this free event will feature live performances from our brightest emerging local musicians. The annual World Press Photo Exhibition returns to Brisbane Powerhouse this season, shining a spotlight on the most compelling and controversial moments as captured by the world’s best photojournalists over the past 12 months. Free comedy continues each week at Brisbane Powerhouse with the return of Livewired Comedy on Sundays from 5pm. Featuring an ever-changing line up of local and national comedians, top off your weekend with the ultimate dose of comedy. Whether you’re seeing a performance, soaking up the festival atmosphere or simply enjoying the breathtaking river views – you’ll be spoilt for choice this season at Brisbane Powerhouse.

In the late 1970s and early ‘80s as New York City was in the throes of economic collapse, Martha Cooper was one of a handful of photographers to capture the colourful graffiti appearing on the city’s subways. Decades later her book Subway Art, a collaboration with Henry Chalfant, became the ‘bible’ of graffiti and a catalyst for the spread of urban art globally. In addition, Martha’s early b-boy photos introduced youth worldwide to the emerging culture of hip hop.

Martha’s extensive body of work before and after NYC’s graffiti explosion highlights many forms of street creativity that are often overlooked by a passersby. Megan K Stack sits down to discuss her new book, Women’s Work, a stunning memoir of raising her children abroad with the help of Chinese and Indian women.
Stack decided to leave her prestigious job as a foreign correspondent to work from home and look after her baby. As her family grew and her husband's job took them to China and Dehli, a series of Chinese and Indian women cooked, cleaned and babysat for them. Stack grew increasingly aware of the brutal realities of these women’s lives: domestic abuse, alcoholism, unplanned pregnancies. Hiring poor women had given her the ability to work while raising her children, but what ethical compromise had she made? Determined to confront the truth, Stack met their families and children and turned a journalistic eye on the trade-offs they'd been forced to make. Women’s Work shines a light on the joy, fear and exhaustion of motherhood and causes readers to reflect on their impact on working mothers.

Doll
Bursting at the seams with fascinating facts, naughty stories and dance moves to die for.
Directed by Emma Canalese and performed by Joseph Simons, 100 Years Of The History Of Dance As Told By One Man In 60 Minutes With An Energetic Group Finale follows Jacob, a schoolboy presenting a report on the topic of his own choice. Not to be extra or anything, but Jacob has decided to cover 100 Years of the History of Dance!
Suitable for ages 12+
Exploring the lives of influential choreographers including Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Bob Fosse, Roudolf Nureyev, Pina Bauch, Gene Kelly and Paula Abdul, Jacob not only talks about them, but demonstrates their signature style at the same time! As he prepares, Jacob ponders the difference between ‘influence’ and ‘plagiarism’ and begins to question his own legacy…

Storyhack Circa 69
A show which begins as a video game and ends in the real world. It takes two strangers, gives them each a character, a set of rules, a walkie talkie and a goal: to go into the real world, to create a unique and spectacular moment and to document it.
DATE TIME TICKETS PRESENTED BY
Developed as a collaboration between immersive artists Simon Wilkinson and Myra Appannah, the show references psychological research into human happiness and parallel concepts associated with games design. It explores the concept of ‘ritual’ both in terms of routine actions which are habitual and repetitive and with regard to ceremonial actions and conscious interventions designed to celebrate and magnify critical life changes. Expect surprises, expect to be challenged and expect to leave with a big smile on your face.

Brisbane Powerhouse is very conveniently located on the Newstead-New Farm Bikeway, which connects to the city centre via the New Farm Riverwalk. There is a CityCycle bike hire station outside Brisbane Powerhouse and docking stations in Fortitude Valley to connect you to the Citytrain network. You can also find secure bike racks outside the Stores and Turbine buildings. The 195 and 196 bus services stop at the end of Brunswick Street at Oxlade Drive, on the East side of New Farm Park. The 199 bus stops at Merthyr Road and Hawthorne Street. Both stops are a short walk away from Brisbane Powerhouse. We have more than 100 free car parks, however, during busy times we open a one way link road that connects to New Farm Park that provides an additional 200 car parks. If you have a dinner or performance reservation, we encourage you to arrive 30–40 minutes early to give yourself enough time to find a park.
