WELCOME
LORD MAYOR’S MESSAGE Winter in Brisbane is never a time to hibernate. With our mild climate and active lifestyle there are plenty of reasons to get out and enjoy all the arts and culture our city has to offer. Brisbane Powerhouse has curated a program that encompasses both the inspirational and the entertaining to make sure every visit is memorable over the May-August period. In June, be inspired by the Australian premiere of the World Press Photo 2014 exhibition. Enticing thousands to Brisbane Powerhouse each year, this extraordinary exhibition will compel you with its wide array of subjects – from sports stars to freedom fighters – and news stories from around the world. For cabaret fans the inaugural Queensland Cabaret Festival is a must-see. From 6-21 June, Brisbane Powerhouse will showcase the best of Australian and international cabaret with performances by MadMen’s Bryan Batt, Caroline Nin, Melanie Safka, Ali McGregor and more. If you’re looking for school holiday fun, then look no further; the popular children’s festival Powerkids makes a return to Brisbane Powerhouse in July. This year all the festival favourites are back. There’s the Yo Gabba Gabba! Live! show, as well as a range of creative workshops and free entertainment for under 12s. For those in need of a little comic relief, you can’t look past Jimeoin and Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow for incisive wit and hilarious observations. If physical comedy is more your style, check out the critically acclaimed contortions of The Umbilical Brothers. With so much on offer from May-August, I encourage everyone to come and visit Brisbane Powerhouse and experience something unique, inspiring and entertaining.

WELCOME
WELCOME Winter in Brisbane is an awesome time – it’s almost cold enough to wear a scarf and here at Brisbane Powerhouse we’ve got plenty of shows, exhibitions and events to keep you excited and out of the rain. We’ve recently opened our doors to WTF and the Australian Performing Arts Market, and hundreds of international arts companies have experienced Queensland’s punk cathedral for contemporary culture. That continues this month: Australia’s greatest modern dance and circus companies are arriving, with Chunky Move’s production of Keep Everything, and Beyond by Brisbane’s own Circa. The Rock Surfers Theatre Company brings its celebrated production of David Williamson’s The Removalists, plus there’s Rhonda Burchmore in Vinyl Viagra, the bewilderingly funny Umbilical Brothers and the World Press Photo 2014 exhibition. Also in the spirit of opening our doors and sharing the best of Brisbane, we’re collaborating with our friends at arts centres across the state to launch the new Queensland Cabaret Festival. So, come all ye pop culture intellectuals, grab some mates and a glass of something and share an experience unlike any other in Brisbane. And leave the scarf at home!

GRIFFITH REVIEW: CULTURE WARS OR CULTURAL SOLUTIONS? THE CULTURE WARS ARE A STAPLE OF POLITICS. BUT WHY ARE WE SO AFRAID OF THE ‘C’ WORD? AND WHAT EXACTLY DO WE MEAN BY CULTURE? Robyn Archer and Julianne Schultz, two of the smartest cultural leaders in Australia, come together to share their opinions, wealth of experience and quick wit as they battle against the cultural naysayers. They explore the motivations behind the bitter political contest over culture in the face of mounting evidence that culture contributes substantially to the economy,
as well as to social cohesion and personal wellbeing. What would a creative society look like? How should its value be measured? This will be an inspirational evening as two of the most influential people in the nation’s cultural landscape shape a vision for the future.

SHARE HOUSE FIVE MUSOS. ONE HOUSE.
“Topology are probably the most creative and important composers of new contemporary classics in Australia today...” ABC FM
An “instrumental opera” loosely set in the 70s, Share House follows five dysfunctional bandmates sharing a dishevelled flat and interwoven life full of warmth, fun and unrequited love. The housemates make their squalor bearable through making music but they can’t ignore the grunge forever. Disaster strikes and they’re forced to face hard realities. Portraying fictional characters while playing intricate original music, Topology explores an 12

BLOOD: THE STUFF OF LIFE WITH LAWRENCE HILL concept has spawned rules about who gets to belong to a family or cultural group, who enjoys the rights of citizenship and nationality, what privileges one can expect to be granted or denied, whether you inherit poverty or the right to rule over the masses, what constitutes fair play in sport, and what defines a person’s identity.
JOIN RADIO NATIONAL’S PAUL BARCLAY FOR A CONVERSATION WITH LAWRENCE HILL ABOUT HIS NEW BOOK, BLOOD: THE STUFF OF LIFE. Blood: The Stuff of Life is a bold meditation on blood as a historical and contemporary marker of identity, belonging, gender, race, class, citizenship, athletic superiority and nationhood. Blood runs red through every person’s arteries and fulfils the same functions in every human being. The study of blood has advanced our understanding of biology and improved medical treatments, but its cultural and social representations
have divided us perennially. Blood pulses through religion, literature, and the visual arts. Every time it pools or spills, we learn a little more about what brings human beings together and what pulls us apart. For centuries, perceptions of difference in our blood have separated people on the basis of gender, race, class, and nation. Barclay and Hill will lead you in an exploration of the idea of ‘blood purity’. This

THEATRE
SEX WITH STRANGERS Directed by Jennifer Flowers. With Thomas Larkin and Veronica Neave.
LOVE AND AMBITION IN THE INTERNET AGE. When star sex blogger and memoirist Ethan tracks down his idol, the gifted but obscure novelist Olivia, he finds they both crave what the other possesses. As attraction turns to sex, they confront the dark side of ambition and the near impossibility of reinventing oneself when the past is just one click away. Sex with Strangers is a fast-paced, witty and compelling story that explores the clash of the public and the personal when love and the digital age collide. Multi-award-winning director Jennifer Flowers reconnects with actors Thomas Larkin and Veronica Neave who worked together on the critically acclaimed 2012 Queensland Theatre Company production of Romeo and Juliet. Warning: this play may contain material not suitable for viewing by children or those with a clean web-browsing history.
”Funny, insightful commentary on how the Internet has altered the relationship between public and private selves...” VARIETY

The setting is Chadron, a small town on the High Plains of Nebraska, a spectral landscape hewn by brutal winters and summer wildfires. It’s a place where everyone knows everyone, somewhere people go to disappear – and sometimes disappear from. One day in 2006, Poe Ballantine’s neighbor, Steven Haataja, a math professor from the local state college disappeared. Ninety-five days later, the professor was found bound to a tree, burned to death in the hills behind the 58

Ballantine had never contemplated writing mystery or true crime, but since he knew all the players, the suspects, the sheriff, the police involved, he and his kindergarten son set out to find out what might have happened. CULTURAL COMMITMENT
OUR CULTURAL COMMITMENT
Brisbane Powerhouse is Queensland’s home for contemporary culture. We want every artist in Brisbane and beyond to look to our venue and know there is a place here for what they do. The stories we tell are built on partnerships and collaboration. We have deeply embedded relationships with Queensland’s flagship organisations and festivals,
as well as home companies that we house and support. We open our doors to independent and emerging artists, and have an organisation-wide commitment to creators of all disciplines – including those who wouldn’t necessarily self-identify as “artists”. We want to help create events and experiences that couldn’t exist anywhere else. This might be an outstanding
dining experience, the adrenalin rush of a festival or the joy in being a part of a great community-owned event. Our building is the hero of our story, and its uniqueness is represented in everything you encounter. Donate to Brisbane Powerhouse and help write the next chapter of our history.
