WELCOME
LORD MAYOR’S MESSAGE Enjoy the best Brisbane has to offer in the springtime with Brisbane Powerhouse’s September to December cultural offerings. With the return to warmer weather I hope everyone can shake the winter blues and enjoy some of the amazing line-up. There’s everything on offer - from comedy with the Prince of Polyester, Bob Downe, to the inspirational with TEDxBRISBANE. September sees the return of the city’s own Brisbane Festival. This year you can catch critically acclaimed local and Korean artists reflecting on the awesome power of water in new dance piece 대홍수 Deluge. You can also bring the family together to celebrate traditional Chinese fables with Monkey... Journey To The West, a fantastic play based on the popular 1970s TV show. The celebrations continue with Wonderland. Taking over Brisbane Powerhouse in December this new event will bring a carnival-like atmosphere and fantastic shows, including a new show by local cabaret stars the Kransky Sisters and celebrated band Topology. I encourage everyone to visit Brisbane Powerhouse this Spring – whether to experience a show, take in an exhibition, soak up the festival atmosphere or simply enjoy a meal with river views.

WELCOME
WELCOME Welcome back to Brisbane’s punk cathedral for contemporary culture, where the shows just keep coming! We start springtime with Brisbane Festival. If you’re a retro TV tragic like me Monkey…journey to the west is a perfect opportunity to get your geek on with your family in tow. There’s also a beautiful new dance piece 대홍수 Deluge, by Brisbane’s own Motherboard Productions (who brought you the riotous 지하 Underground in February). One new program we’re excited about is SWEET!, our independent artist series that shotguns Brisbane talent onto the stage with a healthy injection of resources and support from the whole Brisbane Powerhouse team. Our first SWEET! show is He Dreamed a Train in October and then we feature Clare Marshall’s Flaunt in November. If you’re after a chance to let your hair down then join us in December for the first Wonderland. Inside and out, Brisbane Powerhouse will be taken over by a dazzling line-up of circus performers, carny folk, and vaudeville charmers. I highly recommend checking out the internationally-acclaimed and locally-grown Briefs: The Second Coming for a healthy dose of cheeky banter and stunning circus tricks. If that’s not enough for you there’s also our year-round program of free markets, music, visual arts and comedy and fantastic riverside dining. So shuck off your winter coats and come and enjoy the best of springtime in Brisbane with us.

THE SHADOW KING A Malthouse Theatre production
EPIC AND PROVOCATIVE: THE SHADOW KING REWORKS SHAKESPEARE’S KING LEAR AS A SPRAWLING, BLOOD-SOAKED TALE OF TWO INDIGENOUS FAMILIES IN AUSTRALIA’S NORTH. One of Shakespeare’s most powerful works, King Lear is an unmatched epic of kinship, country, justice and despair. Now in the hands of director Michael Kantor and co-creator Tom E. Lewis, who also takes the title role, this timeless tragedy speaks to the tangled legacy of Indigenous Australia. Told through modern English, Kriol languages and a live rock score, this ambitious new production brings together some of Australia’s foremost Indigenous performers, including Tom E. Lewis (The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith) and Jimi Bani (Mabo), along with the music of Bart Willoughby (Yothu Yindi).
“A stellar ensemble cast... close to transcendent.” HERALD SUN
“Fascinating, ultimately shattering theatre.”
“The use of a Shakespearean classic to tell an Indigenous tale of family destruction, greed, corruption and deception works strikingly well.”

CULTURAL COMMITMENT
OUR CULTURAL COMMITMENT
Brisbane Powerhouse is Queensland’s home for contemporary culture. We want every artist in Brisbane and beyond to look to our venue and know there is a place here for what they do. The stories we tell are built on partnerships and collaboration. We have deeply embedded relationships with
Queensland’s flagship organisations and festivals, as well as home companies that we house and support. We open our doors to independent and emerging artists, and have an organisation-wide commitment to creators of all disciplines – including those who wouldn’t necessarily self-identify as “artists”.
We want to help create events and experiences that couldn’t exist anywhere else. This might be an outstanding dining experience, the adrenalin rush of a festival or the joy in being a part of a great community-owned event. Our building is the hero of our story, and its uniqueness is represented in everything you encounter. brisbanepowerhouse.org
