welcome

lord mayor’s message With the fantastic weather, the active cultural calendar and the chance to enjoy the festive season with family and friends, the arrival of spring and summer marks a truly wonderful time of year in Brisbane. Once again Brisbane Powerhouse has created a program designed to help residents and visitors to the city enjoy the best of the season, with all genres covered. There are cabaret stars who tackle everything from Amy Winehouse to Madonna, extreme sporting feats with the Banff Mountain Film Festival’s Radical Reels Tour, next generation talent via triple j’s Unearthed High: Muck Up Day concert and the annual Brisbane youth arts 2high Festival. One of the city’s leading cultural events is the annual Brisbane Festival. This year the festival kicks off on 7 September and Brisbane Powerhouse will be one of the many venues around town to play host. A highlight of the festival will be the return of local circus company Casus, with their critically-acclaimed hit Knee Deep. Whether you’re looking for relaxation, entertainment, education or inspiration, I encourage everyone to visit Brisbane Powerhouse and take advantage of all that it has to offer.

welcome

CHAIRMAN’S message 2013 has been an incredible year for Brisbane Powerhouse — we’ve seen over 85,000 visitors through the building for our annual events including World Theatre Festival, Brisbane Comedy Festival, Brisbane Queer Film Festival, Powerkids Festival and World Press Photo. In addition to these stand-out events, Brisbane Powerhouse has continued to present audiences with a wide variety of cabaret, circus, comedy, dance, film, music and theatre from Brisbane, Australia, and around the world. In between all of these events and festivals, Brisbane Powerhouse has been undergoing significant changes with the appointment of new Artistic Director, Kris Stewart, who started with the company in July. Kris comes to the company with a wealth of knowledge across a variety of art forms and events in Australia and overseas. He’s worked as the Artistic Director for Sydney Fringe Festival, New York Musical Theatre Festival, Hobart’s Festival of Voices and New Musicals Australia, in addition to winning industry awards and sitting on boards for multiple cultural organisations. While Kris has yet to program his first season at Brisbane Powerhouse we’re sure audiences will appreciate his view that “art should be an adventure”. Please welcome and join Kris as he curates programmes and experiences that will entice you to try something different.

WELCOME

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’s message Brisbane Powerhouse is like the city’s lounge room — it’s where the good times happen, the great stories are told and everyone keeps rearranging the furniture. I’m thrilled to now be a part of it. I guess my personal philosophy about art is that it shouldn’t be broccoli, it shouldn’t be something you do just because it’s “good for you”; you do it because it excites you, because it’s an adventure. I don’t think we’re here to “educate” audiences or show people how smart we are. I mean, it’s nice when that happens — but what we’re really here for is to surprise and entertain, to give everyone who comes through our doors a sense of anticipation. To share something with you that we thought was awesome. I’m honoured to continue Brisbane Powerhouse’s tradition of presenting the best international, national and local performing arts, films and exhibitions and stand on the shoulders of those artists who have preceded me. I’m excited for the challenge and humbled by the responsibility. This is a place where stories are told, where memories are made and where a city comes to celebrate and play. Join me and help create this building’s next vibrant chapter.

BRISBANE FESTIVAL/CIRCUS

OPUS Created by Yaron Lifschitz with the Circa ensemble and the Quatuor Debussy

An Australian premiere, Opus unleashes the power of a string quartet and a large company of acrobats on stage, moving together, making physical music.

“A celebration of the expressive possibilities of the human body at its extremes.” The Huffington Post, NEW YORK

The music of Shostakovich is intense, raw and passionate — the same qualities are hallmarks of Circa’s work. This delicate and savage dance of chamber music and contemporary circus promises to be one of the highlights of this year’s festival. Circa, one of the most innovative circus companies on the planet, is joined by the renowned Quatuor Debussy from France in a creation of astonishing force

and unforgettable beauty. Stay for an in-depth conversation with the artists after the Sun 15 September performance. A Nuits de Fourvière production/Département du Rhône, coproduced with Les Théâtres de la ville de Luxembourg, GREC Festival of Barcelona, Le Cirque-Théâtre d’Elbeuf, Dusseldorf Festival, Barbican Theatre, CACCV Espace Jean LegendreCompiegne. BRISBANE FESTIVAL/THEATRE

I, MALVOLIO Written and performed by Tim Crouch

“...a by turns hysterical and harrowing study of thwarted dignity, cruelty, bullying, self-hatred and metatheatrical revenge.” The Guardian

Handing the spotlight to Twelfth Night’s famous clown character, this brilliantly funny one-man play tells a timeless story of revenge, prudery and practical jokes. Tim Crouch is one of the world’s leading contemporary theatre makers and a specialist in adapting Shakespeare for young and old. Following the huge success of I, Caliban, I, Peaseblossom and I, Banquo, Tim Crouch’s I, Malvolio re-imagines Twelfth Night from the point of view of Shakespeare’s pent-up steward. 08

NORTHERN SOUL Performed and devised by Victoria Melody Directed by Ursula Martinez

An engaging and hilarious one-woman show about Victoria Melody’s attempts at joining in.

“Surreal, funny and thoughtful.” ThreeWeeks

“Original and inspirational.” ***** The Latest

Victoria Melody’s unusual anthropological approach to art practise has found her living with pigeon fanciers and learning to northern soul dance in strangers’ living rooms. Northern Soul is directed by Ursula Martinez (La Soirée) and includes dancing to Madonna and Bonnie Tyler, tales of pigeon ping-pong and quad biking set against a backdrop of 1970s nostalgia. Victoria’s journey in

Northern Soul is a hysterical and engaging reflection on her role as an ethnographer, which sees her find the extraordinary in her everyday travels across the UK. Stay for an in-depth conversation with the artist after the Wed 25 September performance. Commissioned and produced by Farnham Maltings. Supported by The Basement. BRISBANE FESTIVAL/dance

RISING By Aakash Odedra, Akram Khan, Russel Maliphant and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui

Talented newcomer to the dance world Aak ash Odedra performs four individually stunning solo pieces created by some of today’s most important and influential international choreographers. Akram Khan, Russel Maliphant and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui each created a solo work for Aakash Odedra to perform. Presented in a quadruple bill, and opened by Odedra’s own virtuoso Kathak creation, each piece considers Odedra’s Indian dance background in Kathak and Bharatanatyam traditions to inject an exciting new flavour into contemporary dance. In Khan’s Shadow of Man, the choreographer seeks the animal within Odedra, supported by the haunting music of Jocelyn Pook. Maliphant’s CUT moves Odedra’s body in fast, dynamic movements accentuated by a virtuous game of lights. In Constellation, Cherkaoui plays with patterns of light and sound with Odedra generating his own rhythms and luminosity. Rising is a profound and haunting journey of movement, beauty and soundscapes. 12

After sold-out seasons in New York, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, Michael Griffiths is back to strike a pose, get into the groove and open his heart as he tackles the Madonna song book.

CABARET

Madonna’s music has been the soundtrack to millions of lives, but what do her songs say about her own life? Plumb the depths and explore the shallows of the Queen of Pop’s life with Jersey Boys’ Michael Griffiths.

Follow Griffiths on a trip down Madge’s memory lane as he transforms into the diva using only a piano, a cup of tea and some good old-fashioned New York sassiness. Through songs from every decade, you’ll see Madonna’s transformation from tough New York teen, to diva-inthe-making, to international pop icon, all against the background of her perfect pop music. You’ll hear about the diva’s passionate romances, celebrity spats, acting attempts, notorious coffee table books and her dramatic reinventions. If you’ve ever “vogued” on a dance floor, sung ‘Express Yourself’ into a hairbrush, or cried along to ‘Papa Don’t Preach’ then this is a must-see.

“Griffiths’ voice is warm, his piano playing effortless and his interpretations of Madonna’s songs often have blues and jazz tones that make them more affecting and personal.” Herald Sun

OPEN FRAME: MARK MCGUIRE Curated by Room40

Mark McGuire is truly some kind of prodigy and Room40 couldn’t be happier to have him as part of this year’s Open Frame.

“For a guy who trades in dizzy soundscapes and bucolic neo-new age meditations, Mark McGuire is a fairly intense shredder.” PITCHFORK

A member of the now defunct (and much missed) US trio Emeralds, McGuire’s evolution as a guitarist and songwriter in his own right seems unbounded. Taking looped guitar as the basis for his work, McGuire creates transcendental pop deconstructions — melody on melody, sound on sound — all colliding into a celestial harmonic explosion. Joining him is one 18

of Brisbane’s most vital purveyors of party post-pop, Blank Realm — responsible for what The Guardian calls “danceable, hook-filled songs that bubble and bloom with an almost biological rampancy”. MUSIC

OPEN FRAME: LAUREL HALO Curated by Room40

Inspired by science fiction, freeform music and Detroit techno, Laurel Halo crafts lush, electronic avant-pop that is as theoretical as it is playful. Halo’s 2012 LP, Quarantine, struck a deep bass-loaded chord. Issued by one of the UK’s most vital electronic music labels, Hyperdub, the album found its way into a huge array of end-of-year lists, including a spot at #1 in The Wire magazine. Coming to Australia for the first time, Pitchfork has described Halo’s work as having “oddly stacked and constantly shifting harmonies, portamento pitch-bending, narcotic

melodies, [and] a prevailing sense of technological dread”. Her sound bridges an uneasy passage between extra-terrestrial unfamiliarity and pulsing earthly delight. Joining her is techno deconstructionist Objekt, presently based in Berlin. Earning a serious reputation for innovative remix transformations, he’s produced work for everyone from Radiohead to SBTRKT. room40.org

MATTHEW daY: trilogy Be immersed in the hypnotic and minimalist world of Matthew Day: TRILOGY — three solo performances created to test human endurance and push the boundaries of contemporary dance. Melbourne-based choreographer and performer Matthew Day is an established innovator in the Australian dance scene and his TRILOGY series is a clever and meditative look at contemporary dance and minimalism. Thousands (2010), Cannibal (2011) and Intermission (2012) form TRILOGY and each piece builds on themes and concepts developed in the previous one. Thousands, which earned Day a Green Room Award nomination, is performed against a bold gold backdrop. Its sequence of precise and tightly controlled movements build to create a sense of vibration. A stark whiteness confronts you in Cannibal as Day, clad in white in an all-white space, pushes the boundaries of movement and repetition to create an

immersive experience. Intermission, the final instalment, builds on the minimal nature of the first two works in the series. Day’s choreography plays with our sense of time by using a wave-like motion as a starting point for a slowly unfurling series of movements. pictured MATTHEW DAY IN TRILOGY: THOUSANDS

FEROCIOUS STAND-UP, FASCINATING PERFORMANCE LECTURE AND FABULOUS DRAG EXPLOSION: JOIN PANTI, THE ‘HIGH QUEEN OF IRELAND’ AS SHE MAKES HER AUSTRALIAN THEATRICAL DEBUT.

THEATRE/MUSIC

“A deserved standing ovation for this show, which is as thoughtful as it is highcamp.” The Irish Times

Featuring her trademark wit, sensational sagas and a selection of enviable wigs, All Dolled Up follows Panti’s journey from small-town Mayo (Ireland), to the bright lights of the Tokyo club scene, to reigning supreme as the irrepressible superstar of Irish drag.

Panti’s career as a gender illusionist has seen her tour with Cyndi Lauper in Japan, be tutored by Leigh Bowery in London, run a scandalous fetish club in the docklands of Dublin, host and produce the Miss Alternative Ireland Pageant for 18 years, and pull pints as a towering plastique landlady in her very own pub, Pantibar. Fresh from a smashhit, sold-out run in Ireland’s national theatre, the Abbey Theatre, All Dolled Up has previously garnered nominations for Best Production and Best Performer in the Dublin Fringe Festival Awards. Inspiring, insightful and uplifting, All Dolled Up will incite you to live life to the fullest. thisispopbaby.com

GRINDR: A LOVE STORY? By Nath Valvo

Looking for love, friendship or a casual fling? Follow comedian Nath Valvo through the trials and triumphs of Grindr. Nath Valvo is addicted to Grindr, and he is not alone. Join this award-winning comedian and Nova radio host as he dives head-first into the most influential application to hit the gay scene since fake tan. Grindr has over 100,000 users in Australia and Nath Valvo has chatted with half of them (and blocked the other half). His addiction to the app allows him a glimpse into a world where washboard abs and chiseled chins dissolve under bad lighting, and dating horror stories are so bad they need to be heard to be believed. After sold-out shows around Australia, Brisbane can finally meet Nath and be guided in how to start 30

The myriad products that exposed families to asbestos — toothpaste, play dough, hair dryers, cigarette filters — will remind you how close this issue is to our everyday lives. This joyous and inspirational show celebrates the determination and fighting spirit of those who battled James Hardie Industries and won compensation. TOPOLOGY: COMMON GROUND Featuring Speak Percussion

“Rarely does one come across a group who can all write brilliantly and cross musical divides effortlessly.” Paul Cassidy, BRODSKY QUARTET, ON TOPOLOGY

Brisbane’s most surprising music COMPANY finds common ground with Melbourne’s most adventurous percussionists. Just over 40 years ago, the world came the closest it has ever been to nuclear war. In October 1962, the US Army was put on high alert and the Soviets had nuclear missiles in Cuba ready to use in case of the real possibility of invasion. During the crisis, President Kennedy recorded his phone conversations with previous president General Eisenhower. These records have now been released to the public. Using the rhythms and

melodies of Kennedy’s and Eisenhower’s voices in the phone calls, Robert Davidson (Topology) has created a Cuban-flavoured composition. Featuring their bomb-like drum sounds, Melbourne’s stunning Speak Percussion teams up with Topology to create a mini orchestra. Accompany these two groups as they show off their new original compositions and recall the brink of nuclear war. topologymusic.com

FILM

“...a new, scrappy little fest on the scene.” Underground Film Journal

“I like the word ‘underground’... ‘independent’ carries a stigma of whininess. ‘Underground’ means a good time.” — John Waters

Back for the fourth year running, Brisbane Underground Film Festival (BUFF) brings you the newest in bizarre, low-budget, risky and overlooked films. If you’re looking for an anti-Hollywood blockbuster, a twisted rom-com, a lowbrow horror tale or a bizarre art-house film, you’re in the right place. BUFF defines underground movies as mixing the highbrow (video art and experimental films) with the lowbrow (gore and boobs). The festival has screened the controversial films Dogtooth (2011), Hobo with a Shotgun (2011), The Comedy (2012), and has a celebrated history of screening the scandalous, the cutting edge and the dubious in taste. returns to Brisbane with his brand new show, Go Time. According to Arj, Go Time is both “what audiences expect from me AND the last thing they expect from me, which if my calculations are correct, will make for a great show”.

“If comedians are the new rock stars, then Arj Barker is stand-up’s Dave Grohl.” The Age

BOOK NOW Arj Barker is arguably Australia’s favourite American comedian. In recent years, he has spent more time in our country than his own and has come to understand our culture perhaps better than we understand it ourselves. His stand-up is both insightful and pointed, like a mindreading thumbtack, if there was one of those…

His comedic style has been described as “multilayered, conversational and full of covert irony” (Sydney Morning Herald) and you can expect a night of clever quips, hilarious stories and Arj’s unique worldview. Since his last Brisbane season in 2011, Arj has been touring constantly, both solo and with his old pals The Flight of The Conchords. He

THREE: TAP INTO TOPOLOGY Featuring Topology with Grant Collins and Bill Simpson

THREE of Brisbane’s most surprising artists tap into new territory. What do a tap dancer, a drum kit virtuoso, a string quintet, a saxophonist and a pianist have in common? Bone-deep rhythm, so they all speak the same language. Topology is well known for playing extremely tightly, treating complex rhythms like child’s play. Grant Collins’ legendary reputation comes from his ability to play five completely independent rhythms at once; using arms, legs and his voice. And Bill Simpson is also known for rhythmic wizardry.

After seeing him in action with tap dance troupe Red Hot Rhythm in their sold-out Brisbane Powerhouse show Rhythm Junkies, it’s easy to understand why so many classic jazz drummers were also tap dancers. Come and see seven artists who take impish delight in sharing just how rhythmic they can be with a bunch of new original compositions; creating energy and contagious fun. topologymusic.com
