welcome

lord mayor’s message It has been a fantastic start to 2013 at Brisbane Powerhouse with a programme of some of our city’s most highly anticipated festivals. And this year did not disappoint with an abundance of talent on offer. First up we saw World Theatre Festival bring performances from around the world to Brisbane in 12 days of contemporary theatre. Then came Brisbane Comedy Festival, which made us laugh with over 40 comedians packed into four weeks of fun. More recently we had the 14th annual Brisbane Queer Film Festival presenting the best in dramatic, comedic, documentary and short LGBT film from around the world. Festival season is only an introduction to a year-long programme of arts and cultural events at Brisbane Powerhouse. From May through to August, we look forward to another full line-up of brilliant performances and visual arts across a variety of genres. As part of this season, I am proud to welcome back the World Press Photo exhibition to Brisbane. The event showcases the globe’s top photojournalists and this will be the first showing in Australia as part of a 45 country world tour. In addition, Powerkids – Brisbane’s Annual Children’s Festival is back again this year to keep kids entertained during the June/July school holidays. From family friendly shows and free weekend events, to theatre that will engage you in story and music that will make you move, Brisbane Powerhouse contributes so much to our city’s vibrant arts scene. Please join me this season in exploring the venue’s spectacular May to August programme.

THE CONTEMPORARY AUSTRALIAN FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHIC PROJECT Produced by Fier Institute

A visual anthropological look at what an Australian family is in our contemporary world. The aim of this project was to photograph the typical Australian family; to make photographs that record the socio-cultural landscape of contemporary family life (or relationships) in Australia today. Participating artists photographed Australian families over a 12-month period. The result is 58 curated photographic prints by 29 photographers from across Australia, reflecting the diverse range, nature, and cultural aspects of family life and relationships found today in Australian families and society.

KAKI KING: GLOW ALBUM LAUNCH With ever-growing audiences and innumerable world tours to her name, this true iconoclast, visionary musician and artist graces the stage to celebrate her new album, Glow.

King has expanded and reconceived the role of the solo instrumental artist, constantly kicking at the boundaries of expectations. Over her decade-long career, the Brooklyn-based guitarist/composer has recorded five extraordinarily diverse and distinctive LPs, performed with music icons including Foo Fighters, Timbaland and The Mountain Goats, and contributed to film and TV soundtracks including Sean Penn’s Into The Wild and Twilight. DANCE

OPAL VAPOUR By Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal in collaboration with Paula van Beek and Ria Soemardjo

Against a shimmering terrain of shadow and sand, the stories of mountains, bones, and ghostly rivers are danced and sung in a contemporary ritual inspired by ancient Java.

“Ria Soemardjo sings. Her whole body becomes voice. There is a kind of simplicity to her physicality that makes space for the sound to emerge as pure affect.” REAL TIME

Created across two countries – Australia and Indonesia – Opal Vapour uses elements of Javanese Wayang Kulit shadow puppetry to explore powerful physical and internal states while balancing moral and spiritual aesthetics. Invoking classical Javanese court-dance and instilled with the mystical influence of an Indonesian trance-possession ritual, Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal’s sinuous transformation is held by Ria Soemardjo’s pure voice and an evocative score suggestive of Javanese gamelan. Performed in the moment, both artists are transported through time by Paula van Beek’s sublime lighting landscapes and haunting shadow play.

“United as one.” **** THE AGE Toured by Performing Lines for Mobile States with the support of the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body. Originally presented with Malthouse Theatre as part of ‘Helium’. Mobile States is a national consortium made up of five member organisations: Arts House, Melbourne; Brisbane Powerhouse; Performance Space, Sydney; Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts; Salamanca Arts, Hobart. LADY RIZO Making her Australian debut, this New York cabaret superstar revives the genre by combining vintage arrangements and theatrical explorations of pop songs from every decade in addition to performing her own stirring anthems.

Lady Rizo exploded onto the New York stage with a powerful voice and stage charisma that made audiences take note. Beginning as cult caburlesque spectacular Lady Rizo and the Assettes in 2005, in January 2010 she won her first Grammy on a duet with acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Lady Rizo’s heartstoppingly plaintive vocals have been featured on Moby’s Pale Horses and she most recently won the Time Out & Soho Theatre Edinburgh Cabaret Award, the Fringe’s first ever prize created to recognise cabaret work. Revel in the luscious vocals of this awardwinning diva as she combines glamour, wit and insane charm into a fascinating mix of bawdy

humour and polished hyper-femininity. The brazen blond will have you rolling with laughter while she “blows your heart and goes down on your mind” (Village Voice). ladyrizo.com

spectacle with an all-star cast. Ashley stars as little orphan Fannie, a ten-yearold with a terrible secret ...one she can’t even share with her inmates at the Sutherland Shire Girl’s Orphanage, let alone the bad-tempered showbiz has-been who runs the place: the drunken Miss Trannigan (Rhonda Burchmore). Luckily for Fannie, she meets acclaimed photographer/multimillionaire Daddy Warhorse (Gary Sweet) who promises to sponsor her! But can she survive a rigorous set of blind auditions, a very ‘arty’ photoshoot and an appearance on evil

Dmitri Shostakovich’s true legacy is his 15 string quartets. These intensely personal, profound, bitterly funny and tragic utterances are collectively one of the great works of 20th Century art. There are few composers as compelling and controversial as Shostakovich, whose music is a life-and-death battle of ideas about truth, ideology and existence. Composed throughout his life, the quartets comprise a private journal, from energetic youth to the terrified contemplation of mortality. qmf.org.au

goofy and – for those of us with long memories – achingly real comedy. Set in the special kind of hell that is the school dance, the show follows three awkward teens, Matthew, Luke, and Jonathan, on their hormone-fuelled quest for social acceptability. Director Rosemary Myers, writer Matthew Whittet, designer Jonathon Oxlade and composer Luke Smiles have drawn inspiration from the teen angst films of John Hughes and created a nostalgic but boisterous theatrical gem. This is one for the dorks, the misfits and the wannabe rock gods. windmill.org.au This project has received financial assistance from Arts South Australia, and the Australian Government through Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.

LONG PLAYER SESSIONS Your all-time favourite classic LPs performed live from start to finish. If there is one thing that has long represented the pinnacle of a musician’s career, it’s ‘the album’. From Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and Dark Side of the Moon, to Purple Rain and Nevermind, classic albums have become one of our most loved – and most debated – music obsessions. After a hugely successful series in 2012, Long Player Sessions return to Brisbane Powerhouse in August. 36

Each Long Player Session finds two Brisbane bands performing a classic album from start to finish... plus a few of their own tunes thrown in for good measure. For a night of inspiration, celebration and a good ol’ sing along, Long Player Sessions are not to be missed.

ANTIDOTE FILMS: FAKE IT SO REAL Films that Matter curated by Ruari Elkington Directed by Robert Greene (2012)

over-the-top theatrics of the wrestling ring collide with the realities of the working-class American south.

“Vivid... The big night is sheer carnival hokum, an undistilled backwoods theater of makeup, masks, vinyl trunks and relentless pounding.” THE NEW YORK TIMES

Diving head-first into the world of independent prowrestling, documentary Fake It So Real was filmed over a single week leading up to a big show. The film follows a ragtag group of wrestlers in North Carolina. They aren’t paid for their

passion, but they treat wrestling like any artist treats their work. Fake It So Real shares the triumphs and heartaches of a uniquely under-appreciated American art form. fakeitsoreal.com

A black comedy about white terror, Delectable Shelter is a no-holdsbarred portrait of the privileged, facing the end of the world as they know it.

THEATRE

“Very funny, with enough sting to create a lingering aftertaste.” THEATRE NOTES

In a bunker deep within the earth, five survivors plan a utopian society. Their dreams are lavish, their visions grand and their aspirations (somewhat) noble. But saving the world is the easy part; the hard part will be learning to

share it with those they thought were beneath them. Taking cues from Moliere, Brecht and Chris Morris, Delectable Shelter lampoons the prejudice ingrained in our prosperous Western society as it declines from dominance in the 21st Century in a grotesque comedy of the not-toodistant future. A new play from multiaward winning theatre renegades The Hayloft Project with Critical Stages, Delectable Shelter is a laugh-out-loud funny production that speaks directly to our modern society in a sharply clever way. hayloftproject.com Originally produced by The Hayloft Project and Theatre Works.

DOUBLE THINK By Byron Perry Produced by Force Majeure

Two works by the award-winning Australian choreographer and performer Byron Perry. GOGGLEBOX It’s safe to say our relationship with TV has changed dramatically over the last decade - but aren’t those of us that grew up with it just a little bit uneasy when we read articles saying TV is dead? While we sit on our couches bathed in the luminescence of our smart phones and tablets, the television is desperately contorting itself through whatever digital hoops necessary to escape the redundancy that threatens. Gogglebox is a nostalgic romp for a short attention span, a truly analog experience of the psychological relationship we have all had and may continue to have with our beloved box.

DOUBLE THINK Byron Perry presents a shifting world of light and shadow with this playful investigation into opposition. Through movement-based conversations, one tall man and one short woman make imperfect sense as they shed some dark on a light subject in a complex world of simple objects. Double Think utilises performeroperated lighting and live set manipulation to create a constantly evolving landscape of relativity. A mischievous exchange between movement and inertia, light and dark, this is a marvel of motion from an award-winning creator. forcemajeure.com.au This tour is supported by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body.

“...a tightly realised piece of dance/ theatre. It’s slick, engaging and arguably Perry’s best work yet.” Herald Sun

Taylor Mac: 20th Century Concert (Abridged) A bedazzled shaman purges the past by performing a sacrificial ritual of songs from the 20th Century. Internationally acclaimed singer/theatre artist Taylor Mac, who Time Out Australia calls “a genuine leader of our times”, brings radical fairy sacramental realness to this concert of popular music classics. Expect at least one song from each decade of the 20th Century to act as a springboard for frivolity, oblation and contemplation. taylormac.net

Strangely Familiar By Louis Lim

An investigation of the ‘unseen’ side of the differently-abled narrative, this exhibition effectively disrupts the ‘ableist’ presumption of the inferiority of the ‘disabled’.

Mainstream media presents a limited narrative: the celebration of an abled body. Alternatively, the media showcases those who overcome the pathological as medical miracles or inspirational idols. Fascinated by the diversity of the human condition, specifically those who are unseen in the media, Louis Lim collaborated with his subjects Finbar, Jocelyn and Anthony over the period of a year. The stories Lim presents are not concerned with physical limitations, nor are they celebrations of ‘inspirational achievements’. Instead, he seeks to share a glimpse into the personal and intimate aspects of love, belonging and identity. Louis Lim is a Malaysianborn Chinese photographer

“It’s about how different yet similar people can be, in which stigmatisation and marginalisation against differentlyabled people need to be questioned.” louis lim in an interview with spool collective

Photographers Jacques Maudy and Jimi Casaccia travelled to Yangon in May and June 2012 to document the city’s colonial buildings on film, in some cases sweet-talking guards and public officials to allow them access. The pair photographed 100 structures to prepare a set of dramatic images for a local landmark heritage conference. The resulting exhibition includes images of the Secretariat building; the first images in 60 years since the building was sealed off to civilian access in 1947 after the assassination of Aung San, the father of Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi. The photographers used filters and other effects in Photoshop to make the shots more visually arresting so officials would see the architectural treasures in a new way. The pair’s work may now help to galvanise a movement to save Yangon’s old buildings. jjmcphoto.com

THEATRE

I’m your man A Belvoir production, created by Roslyn Oades

The more you sweat, the less you bleed. For 18 months theatremaker Roslyn Oades and her trusty tape recorder followed a determined, young boxer from Western Sydney through his preparations for a world-title fight. I’m Your Man is the story of who she and her tape recorder met along the way: past legends, up-and-comers and failed contenders whose lives have been irreversibly changed by the fighting game. Enter the boxing gym: a place of dreams, of glory, of a better life, where everyone wants to be special and only one thing is certain – that no matter how high you fly you will eventually lose. I’m Your Man is no ordinary slice-of-life. The actors wear earpieces and take their lines directly from the ringsides, gyms and dressing rooms of Oades’ recordings. This is fuelled-up, high-stakes, realdeal theatre.

I’m Your Man is the third of a trilogy by Oades about acts of bravery and the psychology of respect. Behind the thrilling, brutal sport lays a compelling tale of courage and its cost. Toured by Performing Lines for Mobile States with the support of the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body. Originally produced by Belvoir, and Sydney Festival in association with BYDS. Mobile States is a national consortium made up of five member organisations: Arts House, Melbourne; Brisbane Powerhouse; Performance Space, Sydney; Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts; Salamanca Arts, Hobart. The program is managed and produced by Performing Lines.
